Phytochemical Betanin Gobbles Up Breast Cancer Cells in Vitro

Breast cancer is a chronic and medical condition characterized by cell growth irregularly in the breast tissues due to DNA alternation.

Most cases of breast cancer begin in the cell on the surface of the inner lining of the breast tissues before penetrating into the deeper layers.

According to the statistics, in the US the lifetime of breast cancer in women is 1/8. In other words, if you are women, your risk of breast cancer development during your lifetime is 12.5%.

According to the prediction using the historical data, in 2019, approximately 268,600 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in women in the U.S., along with 62,930 new cases of non-invasive (in situ) breast cancer.

The exact causes of breast cancer are not identified. However, according to the epidemiological studies, certain conditions may increase the risk of the disease such as being overweight, diet, inactivity, excessive alcohol consumption, smoking and exposure to xenoestrogen.

Some researchers suggested that the discovery of oral contraceptive pill over the past few decades may correlate to the rise if breast cancer.

In other words, if you currently use an oral contraceptive, you are at a higher risk of the disease onset.

Dr. Kathleen E. Malone in the examined the breast cancer risk in women who use oral contraceptives wrote, "Breast cancer incidence in Western countries is relatively high and apparently is increasing. That breast cancer appears to be influenced by other hormonally mediated factors leads to the hypothesis that the high rate of exposure to oral contraceptives among American women may also be associated with this increase".

And, "an increasing number of studies have appeared that suggest an elevated risk in relation to some aspects of oral contractive use".

Betanin is Phytochemicals in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments of Betacyanins, belonging to the group of Betalains, found abundantly in beets, chard, etc.


With an aim to find a potential ingredient in plant phytochemicals for the treatment of breast cancer without inducing adverse effect compared to those of conventional medicine, researchers examined the extracts containing betanin and its stereoisomer isobetanin, which belongs to the betalain group of highly bioavailable antioxidants.

The study involved the analysis of the cytotoxicity of applying betanin-enriched extract then characterized on cancer and normal cells.

Betanin/isobetanin concentrate significantly decreased cancer cell proliferation and viability of MCF-7-treated cells, by inducing the production of proteins associated with proapoptosis and gene associated with tumor suppression. 

Observation of the increased alternation of the mitochondrial membrane potential suggested that the extracts cause cancer cell death by both intrinsic and extrinsic apoptotic pathways.

The death of MCF-7-treated cells is also attributed to betanin/isobetanin induced autophagy.

Interestingly, injection of betanin-enriched extract showed no obvious effect towards normal cell lines.

Dr. Nowacki L, the lead scientist said, "the betanin/isobetanin mix as a therapeutic anticancer compound, alone or in combination with classical chemotherapeutic drugs, especially in functional p53 tumors".

In other words, betanin/isobetanin mix extracts processed anti-breast cancer cell proliferation by inducing cell death without affecting the integrity and viability of the normal breast cells.

In the analysis of the FDA approved red food color E162, used in suppressing the development of multi-organ tumors in experimental animals, researchers compared the cytotoxic effect of the red beetroot extract with an anticancer drug, doxorubicin (Adriamycin) in the estrogen receptor-positive human breast cancer cells (MCF-7).

Beetroot extract exerted a significantly lower cancer cell inhibition compared to that doxorubicin.

The findings suggested that betanin, the major betacyanin constituent, may play an important role in the cytotoxicity exhibited by the red beetroot extract, according to the study.

Taken altogether, betanin used alone or combined with other phytochemicals may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of breast cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of betanin in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Ginger Protects Our Eyes Against Cataract

A cataract is a condition with a decrease in vision, caused by the clouding of the lens in the eye found mostly in older adults. Eye injuries, inflammation, and some other eye diseases are also found to initiate the condition.

According to the statistic provided by the World Health Organization, 51% of world blindness, which represents about 20 million people (2010) worldwide are the result of a cataract. The condition can be reversed by surgery.
Aging cataract can be classified into 3 primary types, including
* Nuclear sclerotic cataracts
It is the most common type of cataract in the elderly caused by the gradual clouding of the central portion of the lens.

* Cortical cataracts
It is a type of cloudiness that develops in the lens cortex outside the edge of the lens.

* Posterior subcapsular cataracts
It is a type of cataract begins with a cloudy area on the back surface of the lens.

Epidemiological studies suggested that people who are smokers, occupation associated with ultraviolet light exposure, diabetes mellitus and overweight are susceptible to the higher risk of the disease.

However, some researchers suggested that the widespread cataract in the aging population over the past few decades may be associated with the promotion of a high-fat diet.

Dr. Chung-Jung Chiu, the lead scientist said, "Two major dietary patterns were identified by principal component analysis and named Oriental and Western patterns. The Oriental pattern was characterized by higher intake of vegetables, legumes, fruit, whole grains, tomatoes, and seafood. The Western pattern was characterized by higher intake of red meat, processed meat, high-fat dairy products, French fries, refined grains, and eggs".

And, "Our data indicate that consuming a Western dietary pattern is significantly associated with increased odds of early nuclear opacity".

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine for the treatment of dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

Researchers on finding a natural compound for the treatment of diabetic cataract caused by advanced glycation end products (AGE) examined ginger anti AGE activity.

The study included diabetes Wistar-NIN rats induced by intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin (35 mg/kg body weight) and the control rats received vehicle alone.

In diabetics rats, a set of diabetic animals was given the AIN-93 diet, another set was given either 0.5 or 3% ginger in their diet for a period of two months.

According to the tested assays, ginger not only delayed the onset but also the progression of cataract in rats.

Ginger significantly inhibited the formation of various AGE products including carboxymethyl lysine in the eye lens.

Furthermore, the injection of ginger also inhibited the hyperglycemia-induced osmotic stress in the lens.

The results suggested ginger protects the eye against cataract in rats through a number of mechanisms involved the development of several pathophysiologies, including diabetic cataract.

Dr. Saraswat M, the lead scientist wrote at the end of the study, "The results indicated that ginger was effective against the development of diabetic cataract in rats mainly through its antiglycating potential and to a lesser extent by inhibition of the polyol pathway".

Moreover, in the study of oxidative stress and aldose reductase induced diabetic complications, researchers analyzed the protective effect against diabetic eye complication of purple waxy corn and ginger.

The study included streptozotocin-induced diabetics with the blood glucose levels >250 mg·dL(-1) orally given the extract at doses of 50, 100, and 200 mg/kg·BW(-1) for 10 weeks. 

All doses of PWCG showed significant inhibition of decreased lens opacity, the levels of oxidative stress Malondialdehyde (MDA) and anti-reflective coating (AR) in the lens of diabetic rats.

PWCG also improved the antioxidant profile in the treated rats.

Most importantly, the antiretinopathy property of the combined extract was also confirmed by the increased number of neurons in the ganglion cell layer and thickness of total retina and retinal nuclear layer in diabetic rats.

Dr. Thiraphatthanavong P, the lead researcher said, "PWCG is the potential functional food to protect against diabetic cataract and retinopathy. However, further studies concerning toxicity and clinical trial are still essential".


Take all together, ginger processed a high amount of bioactive compounds may be considered a function alternative for prevention and treatment of cataract, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Phytochemical Sinigrin, the Potential Anti Liver Cancer Proliferation Bioactive Ingredient, According to Studies

Sinigrin may be the next-generation natural and bioactive compound processed an antiproliferative activity against the progression of cancer, according to studies.

In cancer, antiproliferation is a process in which the cancer cells are killed or limited to grow through many mechanisms, including the use of chemo drugs.

In the immune perspective, anti-proliferation can be carried out by activating the genes associated with cancer suppression, programming cell death,.... and cell cycle arrest.

In a suppressive gene, such as pro-apoptotic p53 induces cancer cell death through cell cycle arrest. In other words, the gene inhibits tumor growth by interrupting the cancer cell cycle division.

In programmed cell death gene, such as BCL-2 induce cell death by either inducing or inhibiting apoptosis. In other words, If cells are no longer needed or damaged, activating an intracellular death program will cause cell death.

In phytochemicals, anti-proliferation can also be carried out by antioxidants in which they stimulate the free radicals overexpression to induce toxicity to tumor cells without causing harm to the nearby healthy cells.

Some cancers can stimulate the production of a new blood vessel for cancer cells to grow and others can make enzymes that break down normal cells and tissues as they grow.

Dr. Albanes D, in the study of cell proliferation as a major risk factor for cancer, said, "Caloric restriction strongly inhibits the development of neoplasia in rodents, and there is evidence of a positive relationship between cancer and body weight in humans".

Researchers on finding a bioactive compound for the treatment of liver cancer, one of the leading causes of cancer death worldwide. investigated the anti-proliferative activity of sinigrin, the major ingredients present in Brassica nigra.

In a model of carcinogen-induced hepatotoxicity in rats, the selected animals were orally administered with sinigrin on a daily basis for three months before sacrifice.

During the experiment, the injection of sinigrin significantly inhibited the proliferation of liver tumor cells, observed by the reduction of the number of surface tumors in the rat liver.

Sinigrin induced apoptosis of liver cancer cells by exhibiting the expression of a protein associated with the tumor suppression in the host rats, namely, the p53.

Further, the application of sinigrin induced cancer apoptosis by stimulating the production of a protein involved in cell death programming and gene involved cellular differentiation.

Interestingly, additional analysis of the sinigrin anti-liver cancer activity, researchers showed that the bioactive compound not only inhibits cancer cells from proliferation through cell cycle arrest but also restores the liver function without inducing liver toxicity.

The results strongly suggested that sinigrin processed significant anti-liver cancer properties via several genes and pathways.

Dr. Jie M, the lead scientist wrote in the final report, "sinigrin exerts important anti-proliferative activities in carcinogen-induced hepatocarcinogenesis in rats, and highlight the potential of sinigrin as an anti-cancer agent for liver cancer".

Phytochemical 3,3'-Diindolylmethane Ameliorates Renal Fibrosis

Renal fibrosis is a progressive condition caused by excessive accumulation of extracellular matrix including collagen, enzymes, and glycoproteins which provided structural and biochemical support of surrounding the renal cells during aging and chronic kidney disease (CKD).

According to the statistics, CKD and renal fibrosis affect approximately half of the adult's age 70 and over and 10% of the world's population.

In other words, renal fibrosis is a direct consequence caused by the inability of the kidney to regenerate after injury, leading to the formation of renal scars that results in a progressive loss of renal function.

Most cases of renal fibrosis ultimately lead to end-stage renal failure and a need for dialysis or kidney transplantation.

At the early stage of renal fibrosis, patients may experience symptoms of dull pain in the abdomen or back, pain on one side between your upper abdomen and back, leg pain. discoloration swelling in one or both legs. 

If you have some of the aforementioned symptoms, you may have renal fibrosis, please make sure that you check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.

In dialysis point of view in patients with renal fibrosis, Dr. Menn-Josephy H in the examined the risk of dialysis in patients with renal fibrosis wrote, "Surprisingly, 13.9% of patients with normal renal function had 25-49% fibrosis and 5% had more than 50% fibrosis on biopsy, and 5 years after undergoing biopsy 21% of patients with >50% fibrosis still remained dialysis-free. 3,3'-Diindolylmethane or DIM are phytochemicals derived from the digestion of indole-3-carbinol, belonging to the group of Indoles, found abundantly in broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, and kale, etc.

In the urgency to discover the potential compound for the treatment of renal fibrosis, researchers examined the effects of 3,3'-Diindolylmethane (DIM) a natural acid condensation extracted from cruciferous plants, on renal fibrosis.

The study included the established unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO) and transforming growth factor (TGF)-β1-stimulated normal rat kidney (NRK)-49F fibroblast cell mouse models.

In the UUO model, DIM inhibited expression of fibronectin, collagen-1 associated with the formation of scars but retain E-cadherin involved the formation of adherens junctions to bind cells with each other. 

In other words, DIM protected the renal cells against the induction of renal fibrosis.

In vivo and in vitro, administration of DIM is also found to suppress local fibroblast activation observed by the levels of myofibroblast markers α-SMA and vimentin.

Most importantly, DIM significantly inhibited the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokine-induced abnormal proliferation of NRK49F cells, in a time- and dose-dependent manner.

Furthermore, DIM also inhibited the expression of Smad2 phosphorylation in the formation of renal scar tissue. 

Based on the results, researchers concluded that DIM protects the renal cell integrity by inhibiting TGF-β/Smad2/3 signaling against the formation of renal fibrosis.

Taken altogether, 3,3'-Diindolylmethane derived from the digestion of indole-3-carbinol may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of renal fibrosis, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of 3,3'-diindolylmethane in form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Scientists may have found a natural alternative remedy the modulates the immune function to the needs of the body, according to studies.

The immune system through immune response protects our body against infectious organisms and the inflammatory process that lead to chronic infectious disease and cancers.

There are 2 types of immune disorder. If the immune system is underactive, patients may be easily infected by foreign pathogens, leading to chronic infectious disease and cancer.

On another hand, if the immune system is overactive, patients may experience autoimmune disease caused by the immune system mistakenly attacking the bodily tissues, leading to chronic inflammatory disease, such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA).

Obese animals exhibited impaired innate immunity in terms of reduction in number and function of dendritic cells [21], displayed diminished development, differentiation and cytotoxicity of NK cells [22]".

The findings clearly suggested the association of obesity in the elevated risk of immune dysfunction.

Researcher on finding a natural compound which processes immune modulatory activity investigated the immune protective effect on jungle honey (JH) collected from timber and blossom by wild honey bees that live in the tropical forest of Nigeria.

Female C57BL/6 mice included in the study were injected with JH (1 mg/mouse/day, seven times intra-peritoneal).

After seven injections, according to the assays analysis of the peritoneal cells (PC) and Lewis Lung Carcinoma/2 (LL/2) cells, jungle honey demonstrated an increased PC cells number and the percent of Gr-1 surface antigen and the intensity of Gr-1 antigen expression compared to control mice.


The new cells population increased in the PC was neutrophils, a common type of white blood cells that fight off infections correlated to the decreased tumor incidence and weight in the honey treatment of group.

The increased immune activity in the honey treatment mice was associated with the increase of the ratio of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in entering cytotoxic activity against the tumor expression in  JH-injected mice.

The finding clearly suggested that JH inhibited tumor through the expression of neutrophils mediated by ROS cytotoxicity.

In order to reveal more information about honey immune modulatory activity, researchers examined the immune status in mature mice bearing Ehrlich ascites carcinoma (EAC).

Injection of coriander honey (500 mg/kg) showed a decrease of the in tumor volume, packed cell volume and viable cell count, but an increase in non-viable cell count and mean survival time thereby increasing lifespan of EAC bearing mice.

The efficacy of coriander honey (CH) was found to associated with the increased production of levels of immunoglobulin M, G and A which are glycoprotein molecules produced by plasma cells in response to an immunogen with function as antibodies and the proliferation of T cells.

Bilberry, the Potent Antioxidants, Researchers Reveal

Researchers may have found a natural whole food for the treatment of oxidative stress-related diseases with no side effects, according to the studies.

Oxidative stress is a result of long-term overexpression of free radical compared to the levels of antioxidants.

In other words, depletion of antioxidant enzymes produced by the body is no longer can perform the function of neutralizing the free radical expression.

Free radicals are unstable atoms which have an unpaired electron on the outer ring. Therefore, in order to maintain stable, free radicals must donate or intercept an electron from other atoms, causing the domino's reaction that can not be stopped until all single electrons are paired or inhibited by antioxidants.

Antioxidants are stable atoms which inhibit oxidation.

Oxidative stress has been found to induced protein, lipid and alternation of cellular DNA, leading to the incidence of chronic illness and cancers.

Futhermore, although free radicals are a normal byproduct of oxygen metabolism, certain environmental and behavioral factors such as exposure to radiation and toxic chemicals and smoking can dramatically increase the number of free radicals in the body.

Some researchers suggested, maintaining a balanced ratio free radicals and antioxidants are the best way for good health.

Dr. V. Lobo, the lead scientist in the evaluation of the free radicals and antioxidants wrote, " A balance between free radicals and antioxidants is necessary for proper physiological function. If free radicals overwhelm the body's ability to regulate them, a condition known as oxidative stress ensues. Free radicals thus adversely alter lipids, proteins, and DNA and trigger a number of human diseases".

And, "Hence application of an external source of antioxidants can assist in coping this oxidative stress. Synthetic antioxidants such as butylated hydroxytoluene and butylated hydroxyanisole have recently been reported to be dangerous for human health".


Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.

The herbal plant has been used as foods and herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, and duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, and psoriasis, diabetes, etc.

Scientists with an aim to find a natural remedy for the treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress investigated the bilberry antioxidant activity in an animal model.

Selected rats were divided into 4 groups: control, rats treated with only gentamicin, with only bilberry, and treated with both gentamicin and bilberry.

By analyzing the oxidative stress markers and levels of antioxidant produced by the host, bilberry (100 mg/kg daily) showed a strong nephroprotective effect by improving the antioxidant status against gentamicin toxicity in rats.

These results clearly suggested that bilberry exerted a significant effect was attributed to the expression of the levels of the polyphenolic content, particularly anthocyanin.

Rats selected to the study also were assigned randomly into four groups: Group I (0.9% NaCl-10days), Group II (bilberry extract, 75mg/kg-10days), Group III (0,9% NaCl-9days, and on the tenth day CCl4-2ml/kg), Group IV (bilberry extract, 75mg/kg-10days and on the tenth day CCl4-2ml/kg).

Compared to nontreatment group, bilberry extract group showed a significant decrease in the activity of biochemical parameters in serum associated with liver damage, including the levels of free radicals and lipid peroxidation in the liver.

Furthermore, bilberry extract treatment group IV displayed a strong improvement of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host compared to Group III.

Injection of bilberry extract also showed an increase in the number of apoptotic hepatocytes and the activity of caspase-3 in the liver tissue which has been damaged by the injection of CCl4.

The findings suggested that the anthocyanins from bilberry extract have strong antioxidant properties against the CCl4 induced liver toxicity and oxidative stress.

Taken altogether, bilberry may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, pending to the reconfirmation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Excessive Green Tea Drinking May Increase Risk of Infertility

Green tea is a popular beverage processed many health benefits, including a reduction in the risks of heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. However, excessive green tea drinking or overused of supplement over the long term can induce serious side effects.

Contrast to general belief, overdoses of green tea and green tea supplements may affect the function of male reproductive organs, according to studies.
