* How to Prevent Insulin Resistance and Early Onset of Type 2 Diabetes

By Kyle J. Norton, Master of Nutrition

Beet juice containing phytochemicals may alter postprandial glucose and insulin responses in prediabetics, some scientists suggested.

Insulin resistance, a condition of not providing enough insulin to counter the rise of blood glucose is considered as the early progression of onset of diabetes.

According to The American Diabetes Association (ADA), people with insulin resistance and prediabetes are associated to the early onset of  type 2 diabetes as a result of unhealthy diet and physical inactivity.

And, 150 million people worldwide and 43 million people in the US are currently suffered by type 2 diabetes mellitus or metabolic syndrome.

In broader terms, insulin resistance is considered as major factor that can lead to type 2 diabetes, gestational diabetes and prediabetes.

The actual cause of insulin resistance is debatable, some researchers suggested genetic mutation, aging and ethnicity play important roles in development of insulin sensitivity, And people such as obesity, excess body weight, high blood cholesterol and pressure, too much belly fat, a lack of exercise, smoking are susceptible to increase risk of insulin resistance.

More importantly, untreated insulin resistance may also increase risk of abnormal skin condition, known as acanthosis nigricans with dark, velvety patches.

According to Dr. Wallace IR, the lead author in the study of "Dose-response effect of fruit and vegetables on insulin resistance in people at high risk of cardiovascular disease: a randomized controlled trial", of 105 participants (mean age 56 years) followed a 4-week washout diet, some class of vegetables and fruits may have particular antidiabetic properties.

Therefore, selection of such class and types of vegetables and fruits  may be good interventions in prevented diabetes in patients with insulin resistance or higher risk of diabetes.

Beet, best known as the beetroot or garden beet is a perennial plant with leafy stems growing to 1–2 m tall, belongings to the amaranth family,

Investigation of the efficacy of beet in ameliorated risk of insulin resistance may be associated different aspects involved numbers of mechanisms.

In a total of sixteen healthy individuals recruited, with consumed test meals in a controlled single-blind cross-over design including beet juice, researchers found that such meals exerts a remarkable in countering the glucose uptake.

Additionally, tested subject also showed a significant lowering of the postprandial insulin response in the early phase and a significantly lower glucose response in the 0–30 min phase, in compared to control fed with control beverage matched for macronutrient content (MCON).

Further analysis indicated that beet juice attenuated rise of glucose in the blood stream may be attributed to constituents of
* Betacyanin betalain pigments which process anti glucose uptake and insulin resistance in patients with diabetes and other metabolic diseases

* Phytochemical polyphenols in stimulated insulin secretion and reduced hepatic glucose output by inhibited α-amylase, α-glucosidase and glucose absorption in the intestine.

α-Amylase is a protein enzyme having a function to convert hydrolysis of starch into sugars.

α-glucosidase is glucosidase in the small intestine with function to break down starch and disaccharides to sugars.

Moreover, in the homeostasis model assessment-insulin resistance index, dietary nitrate from beet juice also demonstrated a strong effect in lowering insulin resistance in test subjects. in compared to control through regulation of glucose homeostasis and insulin signaling pathway.

Dietary nitrate from beet juice also improved lipid homeostasis, inflammation, and endothelial function.

Dr. Peter C, the lead researcher said, "Betalains, polyphenols and dietary nitrate found in the beetroot juice may each contribute to the observed differences in the postprandial insulin concentration".

Interestingly, in comparison the effect of ingredients of combined 100 ml black tea, beetroot juice or control (water) in 16 obese, insulin-resistant males, researchers revealed that beetroot juice plus black tea treated groups exhibited a decreased postprandial peripheral vascular resistance (VR) in resistance vessels, but lesser than black tea, in compared to other groups.

According to further examination, the efficacy of beet juice and black tea in attenuated insulin resistance was attributed to increased postprandial blood flow in induced glucose disposal and decreased postprandial insulin response by 29 %..

Truly, a standardized breakfasts with or without beet-fibre given, in random order, to non-insulin-dependent diabetics study, found that beet fiber intake individuals expressed a strong effect in rate of glucose decrease after the meal.with blood glucose levels monitored continuously and hormonal responses determined at regular intervals for 3 hr.

Both tested subjects did not exert notable differences with regard to the plasma levels of insulin, C-peptide or glucagon in regulated levels of blood glucose,

C-peptide is a substance involved proinsulin molecule produced by the beta cells in the pancreas.

The collective findings may provide a footage of using beet juice as a functional food in ameliorated risk of insulin resistance and prevented early onset of  type 2 diabetes.

* The Fruit That Normalizes Non HDL-c/HDL-c Ratio and Blood Cholesterol Naturally

By Kyle J. Norton, Master of Nutrition

Cholesterol is a waxy substance carried around by lipoproteins, that do not mix with water based blood in our body.

Cholesterol is needed for our body to build cell walls and make hormones and vitamin D, and create bile salts that help to digest fat. However too much of it can be dangerous because cholesterol cannot dissolve in your blood.

There are 2 types of blood cholesterol, The low-density lipoprotein (LDL) is also known as "bad" cholesterol and the high-density lipoprotein (HDL) is considered as "good" cholesterol.

According to general belief, high blood cholesterol is considered as risk  of heart diseases due to build-up of cholesterol may narrow arteries that restrict blood flow.

Some researchers suggested that the imbalance of ratio of 2 types of cholesterol caused by over expression of low density cholesterol or reduced levels of high density cholesterol is the main cause of the condition.

Although high blood cholesterol do not induce any symptoms, prolonged period of uncontrolled high blood cholesterol can cause complications of chest pain, the early sign of coronary artery disease, heart attack,.... and stroke.

Eating healthy with rich of vegetables, fruits, increased intake of deep sea fish and reduced intake of saturated and fats accompanied with active physical exercise can reduce risk of high blood cholesterol(6).

However, according to the Medical News Today, some medical conditions and medication may increase subtantial risk of abnormal cholesterol levels, such as diabetes, liver or kidney disease, polycystic ovary syndrome, underactive thyroid gland and drugs that treat increase LDL cholesterol and decrease HDL cholesterol (progestins, anabolic steroids, and corticosteroids)(5).

Papaya is a species of Carica Papaya, belongings to the family Caricaceae and native to the tropics of the Americas. and the plant was first cultivated in Mexico and several centuries

Chemical constituents
Alkaloids, Cardenolides, Anthraquinones, Saponins, Tannin, phenol, flavonoid, anthocyanin, Benzyl glucosinolate, benzylisothiocyanate, 5-(Hydroxymethyl)-2-furancarboxaldehyde, 2,3-dihydro-3,5-dihydroxy-6-methyl-4H-pyran-4-one and 1,3-dihydroxy-2-propanone, etc.(a)

In the study to investigate the ficus carica leaf extract, on hyperlipidemia in high fat diet (HFD)-induced obese male rats, researchers at the University of Florida showed that the extract improves the lipid profile and decreases adipogenic risk factors, most likely mediated through an increase in HDL-C levels(1)

In diabetic rats induced by intraperitoneal administration of 60 mg/kg of streptozotocin (STZ), application of aqueous extract of Carica papaya at dose of 0.75 g and 1.5 g/100 mL) also exerted hypoglycemic and antioxidant effect;, through improved the lipid profile and affected integrity and function of both liver and pancreas(2).

In other words, the injection decreased cholesterol, triacylglycerol and balance the ratio of amino-transferases blood levels in tested rats.

Liver cell injury and damage are associated with a greater increase in ALT than AST; According to diagnosis used for measurement of liver health , an AST/ALT ratio of 2.0 or higher or ALT level exceeding 300 U/L may be indicative of alcoholic liver disease(7).

Abnormal AST/ALT ratio also is served as an indication of abnormal Non-HDL-c/HDL-c ratio which has a strong implication in development of  coronary heart disease, metabolic syndrome, and insulin resistance(7).

According to medical guidelines, normal goal of non-HDL cholesterol level should be 30 mg/dL higher than LDL cholesterol level.

For example, if your non-HDL cholesterol level= LDL cholesterol.+ 30 mg/dL = 130 mg/dL and your  HDL is 40 mg/dL = Non-HDL-c/HDL-c ratio of 3.25, the ideal range of the ratio.

Noticeably, Dr.Juárez-Rojop IE, the lead author at the end of experiment of testing the efficacy of papaya aqueous extract  said, "Low plasma insulin levels did not change after treatment in diabetic rats, but they significantly increased in non-diabetic animals. Pancreatic islet cells were normal in non-diabetic treated animals, whereas in diabetic treated rats, C. papaya could help islet regeneration manifested as preservation of cell size. In the liver of diabetic treated rats, C. papaya prevented hepatocyte disruption, as well as accumulation of glycogen and lipids".

Furhter more, ether- and water-soluble fractions of Carica papaya ethanol extract, on the other hand, in dose-dependent manner inhibited the total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), low-density lipoproteins (LDL) level, and significantly increased high-density lipoprotein (HDL) level(3).

However, according to the Institute for Medical Research, C. papaya leaf extract at a dose over fourteen times the levels employed in practical use in traditional medicine may induce toxicity(4).

Therefore, people who want to use papaya extract for treatment of high blood cholesterol should be taken with extreme care.

* Male + Smoking + High Caffeinated Coffee Consumption = ↑ Risk of Lung Cancer, Scientists Found

Kyle J. Norton, Master of Nutrition

Recent study suggested that regular high amounts of caffeinated coffee consumption may be associated to increase risk of lung cancer.

Lung cancer is a medical condition characterized by abnormal growth of the cells in the lung's tissue.

At the advance stage, the cancerous cells can travel a distance away from the lung to infect other healthy tissue and organs

Most common form of primary lung cancers are derived from epithelial cells.

In US, lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death. Approximately, 88,329 men and 70,354 women died from the disease, according to 2007 statistic.

Non-small cell lung cancer is the most common type of lung cancer, developed in the squamous-cells of the lung.

Although the exact causes of lung cancer are debatable, some researchers suggested that smoking, second hand smoke, exposure to certain chemicals, lung disease, family history,..... and excessive alcohol drinking are associated to substantially increased risk of the disease.

Most common symptoms are coughing up blood.and shortness of breath, however, some patients may also experience symptoms of chest pain, lung fluid retention, wheezing and hoarseness,..... and bone pain.

If you suffer from some of the above symptoms, please see your doctor to rule out the disease possibility

Coffee, a popular and social beverage all over the world, particular in the West, is a drink made from roast bean from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.

In the clarified risk of coffee in induced lung cancer, the Shanghai Institute of Pharmaceutical Industry conducted a search in the data base of PubMed and Embase, from 1966 to January 2009. In 5 prospective studies and 8 case-control studies involving 5347 lung cancer cases and 104,911 non-cases selected, researchers found that
* Coffee high amount intake is associated to a significant positive lung cancer risk.

*. Risk of lung cancer is increased by 14% for additional 2 cups consumed daily.

Dr. Wang Y, the lead author said, "a linear dose-response relationship exists between (caffeinated) coffee consumption and risk of lung cancer".

Interestingly, prospective studies conducted in America and Japan showed a significantly associated with increased risk of lung cancer in highest coffee consumption, but borderline significantly associated with decreased risk of lung cancer in non-smokers in compared to studies conducted from other countries.

And people drinking decaffeinate coffee showed a decreased risk of lung cancer in all studies.

Other, in the review of seventeen studies (5 cohort and 12 case-control studies) involving 12 276 cases and 102 516 controls met the predetermined inclusion criterion, extracted from data base of literature, the total risk of caffeinated coffee intake and lung cancer incidence was 1.17 in compared to non drinkers.

Also in compared to non drinkers, the relative risk of lung cancer was associated to numbers of cup per day consumed,
* 1.10 (95% CI: 0.92-1.31) for ⩽1 cup per day,

* 1.10 (95% CI: 0.93-1.30) for 2-3 cups per day,
 and
* 1.20 (95% CI: 1.02-1.39) for ⩾3 cups per day.

More importantly, Dr. Xie Y, the lead author said, " Significant associations for high coffee intake with increased risk of lung cancer were observed in men (OR=1.41 95% CI: 1.21-1.63), but not in women (OR=1.16, 95% CI: 0.86-1.56), ..... but not in nonsmokers (OR=0.85, 95% CI: 0.64-1.11)".

Taking altogether, there is no doubt that regular coffee intakes of large amounts is associated linearly in increased risk of lung cancer in men and smokers.

* Aloe Vera, the Natural Whole Food That Inhibits Ulcerative Colitis

Kyle J. Norton, Master of Nutrition.

Aloe Vera may have a potential efficacy in reduced risk and treatment of ulcerative colitis, some scientists found.

Ulcerative colitis is condition of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) inducing long-lasting inflammation and ulcers in the digestive tract, affecting the function of lining of large intestine (colon) and rectum.

Onset of the disease may induce a persistent change in your bowel habits.

Most common symptoms of ulcerative colitis include, diarrhea with blood,  abdominal pain, rectal pain bleeding,..... unintended weight loss.

Most patients with ulcerative colitis also experience urgency to defecate and inability to defecate despite urgency.

In children, the onset of the disease may also cause persistent fever and grow retardation.

If you experience persistent and severe bowel symptoms that do not response to over counter medicine, you may have ulcerative colitis, please see your doctor as soon as possible. Untreated ulcerative colitis can cause perforated colon and colon cancer.

The actual causes of ulcerative colitis are debatable, some researchers suggested that long term intake of unhealthy diet(5) and stress may have strong effects in induction of the disease.

According to the joint study lead by the Tabriz University of Medical Sciences, including 62 newly diagnosed cases of UC and 124 healthy age and sex-matched controls, returned questionnaire indicated that dietary patterns play an important role in increased risk of the condition(5).

Dr. Jedel S the lead author in "A randomized controlled trial of mindfulness-based stress reduction to prevent flare-up in patients with inactive ulcerative colitis". said, "mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) did not affect the rate or severity of flare-ups in UC patients in remission. However, MBSR might be effective for those with high stress reactivity (high perceived stress and urinary cortisol) during remission. MBSR appears to improve QOL in UC patients by minimizing the negative impact of flare-ups on QOL"(6).

Aloe Vera is species of succulent plant in the genus Aloe, belongings to the Family Xanthorrhoeaceae, native to Sudan.

The popular herb has become very popular for commercial cultivation due to its health benefits. Aloe Vera has been used in herbal medicine in treating many kinds of disease, including wound, burn healing, minor skin infections, sebaceous cysts, diabetes,..... and elevated of cholesterol.

In a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial of 44 hospital out-patients with ulcerative colitis randomly given oral aloe vera gel or placebo, 100 mL twice daily for 4 weeks, researchers found that oral administrated group shows an improvement and response occurred in nine (30%), viewed in the Simple Clinical Colitis Activity Index and histological scores.

Dr. Langmead , the lead researcher said, "Oral aloe vera taken for 4 weeks produced a clinical response more often than placebo; it also reduced the histological disease activity and appeared to be safe".

Furthermore, in the study of male Sprague Dawley rats fed experimental diets for 2 weeks before and during the induction of colitis, dietary aloe vera gel significantly ameliorated intestinal inflammatory responses in a dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) induced ulcerative colitis.

In fact, the efficacy is also found to associate to the abundant bioactivity of the herbs.

Other researchers suggested that the anti ulcerative colitis activity of aloe vera gel may be due to the healing properties of antioxidants, scavengers, chelators as well as strongly inhibited inflammation, electrical/mechanical impairment in the gut, and a great majority of oxidative stress.

Taking altogether, herbal aloe vera may process anti ulcerative colitis properties, through expression of bioactivity in induced production of antioxidant and reduced intestinal inflammatory responses. but further studies are necessary to re confirm this possibility.

Papaya, The Tropical Fruit Which Normalizes Red (RBC) and White Blood Cell (WBC) Counts and Hemoglobin (Hb) Concentration Against Anemia

By Kyle J. Norton, Master of Nutrition

Anemia is characterized by a deficiency in the hemoglobin of the red blood cells, diminished the ability of the blood to transport oxygen to body cells and remove carbon dioxide from the body

The condition is the most common blood syndrome in the U.S, affecting approximately .6% of the general population.

According to common belief, people with chronic diseases are the most at risk to develop anemia.

Some researchers suggested that genetic mutation can also cause anemia. Children born with gene mutation are associated highest risk of the condition.

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a genetic disease associated with unusually large numbers of immature blood cells.

Women are susceptible to iron-deficiency anemia because of the blood loss from menstruation.

Older adults who follow a poor diet pattern and some medical conditions also increase the risk of development of anemia.

Sadly, long-term intake of certain conventional medication such as Cephalosporins, Dapsone,... and  Levodopa has a strong effect in the induction of the disease too.

The joint study lead by the Maulana Azad Medical College went further to suggest, "The prevalence of anemia was 79.9% according to the WHO criteria of hemoglobin <12 g/dl in females. Age, education, marital status, financial dependence, diagnosed chronic disease, diet, calorie intake, history of worm infestation, and body mass index (BMI) were significantly associated with anemia on univariate analysis".

Papaya is a species of Carica Papaya, belonging to the family Caricaceae and native to the tropics of the Americas, and was first cultivated in Mexico and several centuries

Chemical constituents
Alkaloids, Cardenolides, Anthraquinones, Saponins, Tannin, phenol, flavonoid, anthocyanin, Benzyl glucosinolate, benzylisothiocyanate, 5-(Hydroxymethyl)-2-furancarboxaldehyde, 2,3-dihydro-3,5-dihydroxy-6-methyl-4H-pyran-4-one and 1,3-dihydroxy-2-propanone, etc.(a).

According to Covenant University, Methanolic extracts from S. monostachyus, C. papaya seed oil, exhibited particular antisickling properties coupled with the potential to reduce stress in sickle cell patients(1).

In beta-hemoglobinopathies, fermented papaya preparation (FPP), increased the content of reduced glutathione (GSH) in red blood cells (RBC), and decreased  reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, membrane lipid peroxidation, and externalization of phosphatidylserine (PS), through ameliorating oxidative status, without a significant change in the hematological parameters, probably due to its additional function as an iron chelator(2)

According to the Hebrew University Medical Center study, oral administration of FPP to beta-thalassemic mice (50 mg/mouse/day for 3 months) and to patients (3 g x 3 times/day for 3 months), reduced all the aspects of oxidative stress (p < 0.001 in mice and patients).

Furthermore, The preparation also alleviated symptoms associated with oxidative stress in severe forms of thalassemia(3) as well as a significantly reduced number of sickle cells(4).

People who have anemia or are at higher risk of anemia incidence may want to add a portion of papaya into their diet.

Taken together, whole food papaya and its fermented products may be used in combination with standard therapy in attenuated symptoms and treatment of all forms of anemia.

*Calendula (Calendula officinalis), The Herb That Cuts Off the Energy Supply to Cancers

Kyle J. Norton

Herbal calendula may process a profound and sustainable effect in inhibited the key step in tumor angiogenesis, some scientists suggested.

Angiogenesis is the process that develops new blood vessels from pre-existing vessels by invasive tumors to provide energy(nutrition and fluids) for cancerous cells growth and proliferation.

Cancers are the class of diseases caused by alternation of DNA that initiates healthy cells to  grow disorderly and uncontrollably.

At the later stage, the cancerous cells may travel a distant away from the original site to infect healthy cells of other tissue and organs.

Cancers are the second leading cause of death worldwide besides heart diseases.

According to statistic from the Canada Government, approximately 1 in 2 Canadians will be diagnosed with cancer during their life time, and 1 in 4 will die from the disease.

Most common types of cancer in Canada include lung, colorectal, breast and prostate cancers. And these 4 cancers are account for half of all cancers diagnosed in Canada.

Believe or not, 1/4 of cancers death are due to lung cancer.

Depending to types of cancer, people with cancers may experience general and specific symptoms.

The American Cancer Society wrote, "A cancer may also cause symptoms like fever, extreme tiredness (fatigue), or weight loss. Because cancer cells use up much of the body’s energy supply, or they may release substances that change the way the body makes energy from food. Cancer can also cause the immune system to react in ways that produce these signs and symptoms" and " Sometimes, cancer cells release substances into the bloodstream that cause symptoms that are not usually linked to cancer. For example, some cancers of the pancreas can release substances that cause blood clots in veins of the legs".

DNA alternation is the major cause of the diseases.

Some researchers suggested, smoking, radiation, viruses, carcinogens, obesity, hormones, chronic inflammation,.... and physical inactivity are associated to increased risk of cancers.

Calendula is also known as pot marigold, a annual or perennial herbaceous plants of about 12–20 species of genus Calendula, belongings to the family Asteraceae, native to Southern Europe.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as spasmolytic, spasmogenic, inflammatory agent and to treat abdominal cramps, wound healing, skin diseases, colitis,.... and constipation.

Beside major chemical constituents of triterpenoids, flavonoids, coumarines, quinones, volatile oil, carotenoids and amino acids, the herb also contains loliolide (calendin), calendulin,.... and n-paraffins.

The study of Calendula against the Angiogenesis of most solid tumors, suggested that calendula consists a strong and positive effect in suppressed tumors growth through its anti infectiously endothelial cells proliferation(1).

Application of calendula extract also displayed antiangiogenic activity through a direct inhibitory activity against the key step in tumor angiogenesis(1).

Furthermore, according to Universidad de Granada, the extract exhibited cytotoxic tumor cell activity, induced lymphocyte activation in vivo against tumor growth of Ando-2 melanoma cells and prolonged the survival days of the mice, through cell cycle arrest in G0/G1 phase and Caspase-3-induced apoptosis(2).

Caspase 3 is one of member of caspases that acts as crucial mediator in programmed cell death (apoptosis).

On lung metastasis by B16F-10 melanoma cells in C57BL/6 mice, calendula officinalis flower extract  reduced the lung tumor nodules by 74% with 43.3% increase in life span, probably through the inhibition of key enzymes involved in processes of metastasis(3).

These results suggested that herbal calendula officinalis and its extracts processed cytotoxic activity in induction of tumor cells apoptosis by blocking cancer in facilitated growth, invasion, and metastasis.

However, further data collection on large example size and multi centers studies performed with human consumption of the whole food during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of herbal calendula anti cancer possibilities.

The Veggie and Plant Suppressed Oxidative Stress That Causes Atherosclerosis, Cancers, Diabetes, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Post-ischemic Perfusion Injury, Myocardial Infarction, Cardiovascular Diseases,... and Stroke

Kyle J. Norton

Carrots may have a profound and positive effect in reduced oxidative stress in the induction of related chronic diseases, including atherosclerosis, cancers, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, post-ischemic perfusion injury, myocardial infarction, cardiovascular diseases,... and stroke, some scientists suggested.

Oxidative stress is the indication of overexpression free radicals in the body due to depletion of antioxidants produced by the host tissue.

According to the Department of Biotechnology, M. J. College, "Overproduction of free radicals can cause oxidative damage to biomolecules, (lipids, proteins, DNA), eventually leading to many chronic diseases".

The studies of carrots in reduced overproduction of reactive oxygen species in facilitated oxidative stress were carried out by several respectable institutes and the results were published online medical literature.

Carrot, a root vegetable with an orange color is a sub species of Daucus carota, belongings to the family Apiaceae, native to Asian and Europe.

In the investigation of the relation of dietary supplementation with lycopene (LYC), a major active biochemical compound found in carrot, on age-induced cognitive impairment, and the potential underlying mechanisms, using the behavioral tests, researchers at Northwest A&F University, researchers found that chronic injection of LYC exerts a potential effect in alleviated age-associated memory loss and cognitive defects through several mechanisms

Application of lycopene improved antioxidant produced by the host body in countering to the over expression of free radicals, including glutathione, catalase, and superoxide dismutase activities and the levels of antioxidant-enzyme.

Treatment of the phytochemical displayed a strong activity in reversed age-associated neuronal damage and synaptic dysfunctions in the brain, through inhibited the levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in associated to oxidative stress.

Malondialdehyde (MDA) levels is considered as oxidative maker usedthe in treatment of cancers and other oxidative related diseases.

Interestingly, researchers also indicated that chronic injection of bioactive lycopene lower the levels of the accumulation of Aβ1-42 in the brains in aged CD-1 mice model.

Evidences findings suggested that Aβ-induced oxidative stress may place the majority of the causative effect of increased cellular oxidative stress upon oligomeric Aβ(1–42).

Further more, LYC supplementation also significantly reduced age-associated neuroinflammation caused by over expression of free radicals in activation of proinflammatory cytokines by inhibiting microgliosis (Iba-1) in response to damage to the central nervous system (CNS) and related inflammatory chemicals mediators.

These results overwhelmingly suggested that lycopene injection processes a strong effect in reduced risk  and treatment of diseases associated to over production of ROS, through re-balancing the ratio of antioxidant and free redials in the host body.

Moreover, in d-galactose induced CD-1 male mice cognitive impairments, chronic LYC supplementation (50 mg/kg bodyweight per day) demonstrated a significant activity in inhibition of oxidative stress-induced cognitive defects.

Injection of lycopene also ameliorated histopathological damage and restored brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels in the hippocampus of mice. This findings reaffirms the conclusion of the Northwest A&F University study.

LYC treatment an in animal model,  also increased antioxidant of the host by activating the mRNA expressions of antioxidant enzymes HO-1 and NQO-1, and inhibited the oxidative stress the in induction of inflammatory cytokines IL-1β and TNF-α in host hippocampus.

More precisely, LYC attenuated neuronal oxidative damage through activation of Nrf2 signaling in increased levels of anti inflammatory mytokines and inactivation of NF-κB translocation in signalling pro inflammatory expression.

Dr. Zhao B, the lead scientist, after taking into account of co and confounders said, " LYC could ameliorate oxidative stress induced neuroinflammation and cognitive impairment possibly via mediating Nrf2/NF-κB transcriptional pathway".

The findings indicated that carrot with major active compound lycopene may be considered as function foods in prevention and treatment of oxidative related diseases by restoring the ratio of reactive oxygen species and levels of antioxidant in the body.
