Lycopene Isolated From Tomatoes Lowers the Levels of Hypercholesterolemia in Vivo

By Kyle J. Norton

The liver is the largest internal organ located in the upper right portion of the abdomen, beneath your diaphragm and above your stomach.

The liver produces bile that not only aids the digestive function in food absorption but also builds strong cell membranes, produces vitamin D and steroid hormone.

Hypercholesterolemia is a condition characterized by abnormally high levels of cholesterol in the bloodstream.

In other words, the condition is caused by either overexpression of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) or low levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL).

Cholesterol, a waxy substance produced by the liver or the dietary in moderate amount source plays a critical to aid digestive function in absorbing nutrients, build strong cell membranes, produce steroid hormones and vitamin D. However, excessive amounts in the blood have been found to induce plaque built-up on the arterial wall, leading to heart disease and stroke.

According to the statistics provided by the CDC, hypercholesterolemia is a major risk factor of heart disease, a leading cause of death in the US. In the US, approximately, 71 million American adults (33.5%) have high low-density lipoprotein (LDL), or “bad,” cholesterol, and only 1 out of every 3 adults with high LDL cholesterol has the condition under control.

Similar to high blood pressure, people with hypercholesterolemia are asymptomatic. Patients with familial hyper cholesterol may experience symptoms of chest pain with activity. xanthomas, and cholesterol deposits around the eyelids.

Lycopene is a phytochemical found in tomato in the class of carotenoid, a natural pigment with no vitamin A activity found abundantly in tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables, such as red carrots, watermelons, and papayas,

Tomatoes provide about 80% of the lycopene in the world diet. In plants, lycopene protects the host against excessive photodamage and performs various functions in photosynthesis.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of high blood cholesterol, researchers examined the role of lycopene (L) on proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type-9 against hypercholesterolemia.

Where Proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK-9) is a serine protease of the proprotein convertase (PC) family that has been found to affect the levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C).

In HFD rats, lycopene treatment significantly inhibited the levels of low-density lipoprotein by lowering the expression of hepatic PCSK-9 and HMG-CoA Reductase (or 3-hydroxy-3-methyl-glutaryl-CoA reductase or HMGR and increasing the expression of hepatic LDL-R with function to remove LDL.

Furthermore, lycopene treatment also ameliorated inflammation induced by the expression PCSK-9 by suppressing the inflammatory markers.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "Based on the above results, it can be concluded that lycopene exhibits potent hypolipidemic activities via molecular mechanisms that are either identical (HMGR inhibition) or distinct from that of statins".

Taken altogether, lycopene found in tomato may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of hypercholesterolemia, pending on the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of lycopene in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Omega 3 Fatty Acids, the Natural Non-Opioid Analgesic Drug

By Kyle J. Norton

Non-opioid analgesics are types of medicine used to disrupt the production of prostaglandin associated with pain and inflammation, including nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), selective COX-2 inhibitors, and acetaminophen. NSAIDs inhibit cyclooxygenases (COX-1 and COX-2).

Pain relief is an action to remove pain, distress, oppression by blocking the pain-transmitting information from nerve cells to the brain neurons.

Inflammation is a systematic immune response during the acute phase of infection.

Macrophages, one the lymphocytes and the first-line defense of the immune system after sensing the damage of localized tissue, stimulate the production of proinflammatory cytokines to the site to protect the body against invasion of potential pathogens.

Acute pain is any pain that lasts less than 6 months. Most cases of acute pain are due to physical damage such as soft tissue damage of a sprained ankle or a paper cut. Acute pain is relatively more sharp and severe.

On the other hand, there are many risk factors associated with chronic pain. Some chronic pains can be caused by single factors such as diseases involved nerve damage to injuries that fail to heal properly. Others may be results from several factors including diseases associated with normal aging.

Acute inflammation is a natural response of the immune system to protect the human body against harmful stimuli and pathogens.

Acute inflammation usually receded after a few days or weeks depending on the size and damage. However, if all pathogens were not eradicated after 3 to 8 weeks, the immune system will compromise, leading to chronic low-grade inflammation, a leading cause of chronic illness.

The most common symptoms of acute inflammation occurred with a short period of time such as hours is pain, redness, immobility, swelling, and heat.

Omega-3 fatty acids are phytochemicals in the class of lipids, found abundantly in deepsea fisk, dark-green leafy vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, etc.

The three main components of Omega-3 fatty acids are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of pain, researchers examined the mechanism of pro-resolving lipid mediators (SPMs) on an active and time-dependent biosynthetic shift from pro-inflammatory to pro-resolution mediators,

SPMs are biosynthesized from the omega-3 fatty acids arachidonic acid (AA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosapentaenoic acid (DPA), or docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

According to the tested analysis, isolated SPMs show a strong efficacy at very low doses to relieve rheumatic diseases and neuropathic pain, in experimental models showing no side effects compared to biological agents, opioids, corticoids, and gabapentinoids.

Furthermore, SPMs also act as an immunoresolvents to induce long-lasting analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects, including blocking pain.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "therefore, (pro-resolving lipid mediators (SPMs)) emerge as a new class of non-immunosuppressive and non-opioid analgesic drugs".

Taken altogether, Omega-3 fatty acids may be considered a non-opioid analgesic drugs for the prevention and treatment of diseases,  pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Healthy Food Broccoli's Sulforaphane Gobbles Up Gastric Cancer Cells in Vitro

By Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is a class of chronic diseases associated with irregular cell growth in the tissues of the affected organ.

The stomach formed part of the digestive system located between the esophagus and the small intestine, is a muscular, hollow and an important organ of the digestive tract.

The stomach plays a critical role to assist the digestive system in digesting foods by secreting acid and enzymes.

Stomach cancer is a condition of abnormal growth of the mucus-producing cells in the inside lining of the stomach. Adenocarcinoma is the most common type of stomach cancer.

According to the statistics, most cases of gastric/stomach cancer are found in older people. The average age of people when they are diagnosed is 68. The risk of developing gastric/stomach cancer in a man lifetime is about 1 in 95.

The exact causes of gastric/stomach cancer are unidentified. However, researchers do no certain risk factors are associated with an increased risk of the disease.

Some researchers suggested that people with chronic gastrointestinal reflux disease (GERD), a condition caused by the frequent backflow of stomach acid into the esophagus, is the most likely to develop the disease.

Other diseases associated with the early onset of gastric cancer are obesity and smoking.

According to the Universidad de Salamanca, bacteria and viruses, including Helicobacter pylori are strongly associated with chronic gastritis, clinical syndromes, precancerous lesions, and pathogenesis of gastric cancer development.

Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belongings to the family Brassicaceae. The veggie has large flower heads, usually green in color with a mass of flower heads surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant from the continent of Europe.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of cancer, researchers examined the inhibitory effect of sulforaphane (SFN), the major component extracted from broccoli/broccoli sprouts on gastric cancer.

According to the tested analysis, in vitro, the tumorsphere formation associated with tumor progression and recurrence and the expression levels of gastric cancer stem cells (CSCs) markers were significantly decreased by the SFN treatment.

Furthermore, SFN exerted strong inhibitory effects by suppressing proliferation and inducing apoptosis in gastric CSCs.

Moreover, SFN inhibited the activation of Sonic Hh, a key pathway in maintaining the stemness of gastric CSCs.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "these data revealed that SFN could be a potent natural compound targeting gastric CSCs via suppression of Sonic Hh pathway, which might be a promising agent for gastric cancer intervention".

Taken altogether, broccoli processed a high amount of SFN may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of gastric cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Beta-Sitosterol, the Potential Anti Multiple Myeloma Supplement

By Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is a class of diseases characterized by irregular cell growth that starts in the tissue of specific organs.

Most cases of cancer overtime after penetrating into deeper layers of the affected organs, the oversize tumor can sometimes spread to other organs in the body via lymph or blood, leading to secondary metastasis.

Pre-cancer is a medical condition that likely develops into cancer if untreated.

Monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) is a precancerous condition and the most common plasma cell disorder.

In other words, monoclonal myeloma gammopathies is a precancerous condition that may cause myeloma, a cancer of white blood cell disorder.

Multiple myelomas (Myeloma) is a type of cancer originated from plasma cells in the bone marrow that produces the white blood cells which are normally responsible for the production of antibodies to protect our body against infection.

Over time, multiple myeloma can lead to the accumulation of cancer cells in the bone marrow, overcrowding out healthy blood cells.

According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, multiple myeloma is a relatively uncommon cancer. In the United States, the lifetime risk of getting multiple myeloma is 1 in 132 (0.76%).

Every year, approximately, 32,110 new cases are diagnosed, including 18,130 in men and 13,980 in women. The disease also causes the death of 12,960 Americans including 6,990 in men and 5,970 in women.

The Grades of multiple myeloma are depending on the tendency of spreading. Low-grade cancers usually grow more slowly and are less likely to spread while high-grade cancer indicates otherwise.

The exact causes of MS are unknown. Epidemiologically, the increase of age (If you are between 50 and 70 years old you are at higher risk to develop Multiple Myeloma), gender (men are more likely to develop multiple myeloma than women), race (Cancer tends to affects blacks more often than whites), previous multiple myeloma, exposed to certain chemicals, family history, and radiation.

Beta-Sitosterol is a phytochemical in the class of Phytosterols, belongings to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in avocados, rice bran, wheat germ, corn oils, fennel, peanuts, soybeans, hawthorn, basil, buckwheat. etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the prevention and treatment of cancer, researchers examined the anti-cancer effects of beta-sitosterol (BS), a plant-derived sterol on multiple myeloma U266 cells.

According to the experimental analysis, Beta-sitosterol induced cytotoxicity increased sub-G1 apoptotic population and activated caspase associated with the pro-apoptotic activity and blocked the cancer cell in the energetic converting process in U266 cells.

Furthermore, Beta-sitosterol promoted ROS expression by activating the enzymes involved in free radical production in U266 cells.

Moreover, beta-sitosterol attenuated the induction of new blood vessels by the cancer cells to promote proliferation and suppressed pathways associated with suppression of cancer cell apoptosis and tumor progression.

Additionally, beta-sitosterol also suppressed the proteins associated with DNA repair. sub-G1 accumulation, proliferation, and pro-oncogenic function in U266 cells.

Taken altogether, beta-Sitosterol may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of multiple myeloma, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of beta-Sitosterol in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Omega 3 Fatty Acids May Be a Potent Anti Cancer Remedy

By Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is the class of diseases associated with the growth of the cells disorderly and uncontrollably due to the alternation of DNA.

Most cases of cancer begin in the cells on the surface of the inner lining tissues of the organ or gland. At the early stage, most cancers are asymptomatic.

However, at the advanced stage, most cancers not can induce common symptoms such as gastrointestinal discomforts, unintended weight loss, loss of appetite, and fatigue but also localized symptoms depending on the affected tissues and organs.

Cancers at this stage also can travel a distance away from the original site to induce secondary metastasis.

According to the statistics provided by the American cancer society, in 2018,1,735,350 new cases were diagnosed, representing more than 4,700 new cancer diagnoses each day.
The lifetime probability of being diagnosed with cancer is 39.7% for men and 37.6% for women.

Compared to all cancers, lung, breast, prostate, and colorectal cancers are the most common cancer in the US.

Believe it or not, 1/4 of cancers death are due to lung cancer.

Depending on types of cancer, people with cancers may experience general and specific symptoms.

The American Cancer Society wrote, "Cancer may also cause symptoms like fever, extreme tiredness (fatigue), or weight loss. Because cancer cells use up much of the body’s energy supply, or they may release substances that change the way the body makes energy from food. Cancer can also cause the immune system to react in ways that produce these signs and symptoms" and " Sometimes, cancer cells release substances into the bloodstream that cause symptoms that are not usually linked to cancer. For example, some cancers of the pancreas can release substances that cause blood clots in veins of the legs".

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of invasive tumors, researchers examined the Omega 3 fatty acid therapeutic role against certain types of cancer.

According to the results from differentiation, omega-3 FAs showed a strong improvement in chemo drug effects and tolerability.

Furthermore, the application of omega 3 fatty acids suppressed the protein and pathway associated with cell division and apoptosis and modulated the factors involved in free radical production.

Moreover, omega 3 fatty acids enhanced the activity of novel anti-inflammatory lipid mediators against the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines to induce cell DNA damage.

Taken altogether, Omega-3 fatty acids may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of cancers, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Tocopherols Protect the Electrical Activity in the Brain Against Seizure

By Kyle J. Norton

Epilepsy is a condition of a neurological disorder caused by abnormal electrical activity in the brain inducing sudden recurrent episodes of sensory disturbance and convulsions.

Anticonvulsant is a function to control seizures (convulsions) or stop an ongoing series of seizures.

A seizure is a sudden, abnormal electrical disturbance in the brain. Epidemiological studies suggested seizures can change in behavior, movements or feelings, and in levels of consciousness.

The hormone melatonin is approved only for the treatment of jet-lag syndrome and some types of insomnia, clinical data also suggest that it is effective in the adjunctive therapy of osteoporosis, cataract, sepsis, neurodegenerative diseases, hypertension, and even cancer.

In humans, melatonin may attenuate seizures, and it is most effective in the treatment of juvenile intractable epilepsy.

Its additional benefits include improved physical, emotional, cognitive, and social functions. On the other hand, melatonin has been shown to induce electroencephalographic abnormalities in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy and increase seizure activity in neurologically disabled children.

The hormone showed very low toxicity in clinical practice, according to the study by the Department of Pathophysiology, Medical University, PL 20-090 Lublin, Jaczewskiego 8, Poland(22).

The most common symptoms of seizure, signs, and symptoms can range from mild to severe and vary depending on the type of seizure, according to the Mayo clinic, including
* Temporary confusion

* A staring spell

* Uncontrollable jerking movements of the arms and legs

* Loss of consciousness or awareness

* Cognitive or emotional symptoms, such as fear, anxiety or deja vu

Tocopherols are phytochemicals of which many have vitamin E activity, belonging to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in butter, egg yolk, milk fat, some vegetable, and seed or nut oils, etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of epilepsy, researchers examined the
inhibitory action of antioxidants (ascorbic acid or alpha-tocopherol) on seizures and brain damage induced by pilocarpine in rats.

According to the results of ascorbic acid (250 or 500 mg/kg, i.p.) and alpha-tocopherol (200 or 400 mg/kg, i.p.) on the behavior and brain lesions on seizures induced by pilocarpine (400 mg/kg, i.p., P400 model), Ascorbic acid or alpha-tocopherol injections prior to pilocarpine suppressed behavioral seizure episodes.

Furthermore, the antioxidant administration inhibited free radicals that cause brain damage induced by seizures.

In the P400 model, ascorbic acid and alpha-tocopherol significantly decreased cerebral damage percentage.

More precisely, antioxidant compounds can exert neuroprotective effects associated with the inhibition of free radical production.

Based on the results, researchers said, " These results highlighted the promising therapeutic potential of ascorbic acid and alpha-tocopherol in treatments for neurodegenerative diseases".

Taken altogether, tocopherols may be considered a supplement for prevention and treatment of seizure, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of tocopherols in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Fennel Normalizes Blood Cholesterol in Vivo and Human Study With No Side Effects, Researchers Say

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a natural whole food with the potential to treat hyperlipidemia without inducing any side effects, some studies suggested.

Cholesterol, the natural ingredient produced in the liver plays an important role in stimulating the production of vitamin D, steroid hormones, and bile acids and maintaining healthy cell membranes.
Hyperlipidemia is a condition characterized by abnormally elevated levels of cholesterol in the plasma of the blood.

The causes of hyperlipidemia are unknown. However, an unhealthy diet with a lot of unsaturated fat and trans fat is associated with the early onset of the disease. Foods such as cheese egg yolks fried and processed foods and red meat have found to increase blood cholesterol, long-term intake of such foods in great amount have been found to increase the risk of hyperlipidemia, epidemiological studies found.

The Beni-Suef University, in the study to determine the development of obesity in response to a high-fat diet (HFD) an Egyptian Herbal mixture formulation (HMF), including fennel, showed, "feeding HFD diet significantly increased final body weight, triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol, & LDL concentration compared with controls, while significantly decreasing HD".

Hyperlipidemia is a lifelong condition that is treatable.

Dr. Robert B. Kelly at the Fairview Hospital/Cleveland Clinic Family Medicine Residency Program in the article "The most beneficial changes result from reducing intake of saturated and trans fats; increasing intake of polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats; fortifying foods with plant stanols or sterols; isocalorically adding tree nuts to the diet; consuming one or two alcoholic drinks per day; and adopting a Portfolio, Mediterranean, low-carbohydrate, or low-fat diet. Smaller but still beneficial effects result from reducing intake of dietary cholesterol, increasing intake of soluble fiber and soy protein, and eating fatty marine fish or taking marine-derived omega-3 fatty acid supplements".
Therefore by changing the diet pattern and engaging in regular physical exercise are the fundamental
options that not only can prevent the onset of the condition, particularly in people who are at a higher risk of hyperlipidemia, and also treat high blood cholesterol in patients who already have the condition.

Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is a plant species of a genus, belonging to Apiaceae (Umbelliferae), native to the Mediterranean.

The plant has been used in traditional and herbal medicine as a warming, carminative, antispasmodic, antidepressant agent and to stimulate the appetite, ease indigestion, soothe coughing, reduce intestinal spasms, regulate the menstrual cycle, and relieve PMS.

In the study to examine the effect of the aqueous extract of fennel in the reduced risk of hyperlipidemia, researchers conducted an experiment in Triton WR-1339 induced hyperlipidemia in mice.

Mice treated with the extract at different doses display a significant reduction of cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL-cholesterol, and apolipoprotein-B decreased by 40%, 23%, 61%, and 61%, respectively.

Further analysis, the application also increased the levels of HDL-cholesterol and apolipoprotein A1 by 85% and 58%, respectively

Also according to the Mashhad University of Medical Sciences which also conducted a study to assess the effects of Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare Mill.) on lipid profiles, in sixty eligible postmenopausal women, randomly assigned into the fennel and placebo groups.

Measurement of total blood cholesterol, cholesterol fractions, and triglycerides was tested at the baseline, and after a three-month follow-up.

At the end of 3 months, blood profiled withdrawn from the women suggested
* There are no significant difference in triglyceride (P = 0.679), total cholesterol (P = 0.103), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol(LDL-C; P = 0.146) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C; P = 0.266) levels between the two groups.

* Fennel treated group demonstrates a significant borderline improvement for HDL-C and triglyceride, compared to the placebo group.

Additional differentiation of the process of the double-blind, randomized, and placebo-controlled trial, researchers suggested that longer durations, higher doses, and larger sample sizes are recommended to validate the results.

These results indicated that intake of foods for the treatment of conditions or diseases must be on a long-term basis. The times of 3 months may be too short for foods to exert their potential effects.

Taken all together, fennel may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of hyperlipidemia. Intake of fennel should be increased gradually for the food to reach its antihyperlipidemic stage, a longer duration may be needed. In other words, please be patient.
