Tocopherols Protect the Electrical Activity in the Brain Against Seizure

By Kyle J. Norton

Epilepsy is a condition of a neurological disorder caused by abnormal electrical activity in the brain inducing sudden recurrent episodes of sensory disturbance and convulsions.

Anticonvulsant is a function to control seizures (convulsions) or stop an ongoing series of seizures.

A seizure is a sudden, abnormal electrical disturbance in the brain. Epidemiological studies suggested seizures can change in behavior, movements or feelings, and in levels of consciousness.

The hormone melatonin is approved only for the treatment of jet-lag syndrome and some types of insomnia, clinical data also suggest that it is effective in the adjunctive therapy of osteoporosis, cataract, sepsis, neurodegenerative diseases, hypertension, and even cancer.

 In humans, melatonin may attenuate seizures, and it is most effective in the treatment of juvenile intractable epilepsy.

Its additional benefits include improved physical, emotional, cognitive, and social functions. On the other hand, melatonin has been shown to induce electroencephalographic abnormalities in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy and increase seizure activity in neurologically disabled children.

The hormone showed very low toxicity in clinical practice, according to the study by the Department of Pathophysiology, Medical University, PL 20-090 Lublin, Jaczewskiego 8, Poland(22).

The most common symptoms of seizure, signs, and symptoms can range from mild to severe and vary depending on the type of seizure, according to the Mayo clinic, including
* Temporary confusion

* A staring spell

* Uncontrollable jerking movements of the arms and legs

* Loss of consciousness or awareness

* Cognitive or emotional symptoms, such as fear, anxiety or deja vu

Tocopherols are phytochemicals of which many have vitamin E activity, belonging to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in butter, egg yolk, milk fat, some vegetable, and seed or nut oils, etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of epilepsy, researchers examined the
inhibitory action of antioxidants (ascorbic acid or alpha-tocopherol) on seizures and brain damage induced by pilocarpine in rats.

According to the results of ascorbic acid (250 or 500 mg/kg, i.p.) and alpha-tocopherol (200 or 400 mg/kg, i.p.) on the behavior and brain lesions on seizures induced by pilocarpine (400 mg/kg, i.p., P400 model), Ascorbic acid or alpha-tocopherol injections prior to pilocarpine suppressed behavioral seizure episodes.

Furthermore, the antioxidant administration inhibited free radicals that cause brain damage induced by seizures.

In the P400 model, ascorbic acid and alpha-tocopherol significantly decreased cerebral damage percentage.

More precisely, antioxidant compounds can exert neuroprotective effects associated with the inhibition of free radical production.

 Based on the results, researchers said, " These results highlighted the promising therapeutic potential of ascorbic acid and alpha-tocopherol in treatments for neurodegenerative diseases".

Taken altogether, tocopherols may be considered a supplement for prevention and treatment of seizure, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of tocopherols in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Fennel Normalizes Blood Cholesterol in Vivo and Human Study With No Side Effects, Researchers Say

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a natural whole food with the potential to treat hyperlipidemia without inducing any side effects, some studies suggested.

Cholesterol, the natural ingredient produced in the liver plays an important role in stimulating the production of vitamin D, steroid hormones, and bile acids and maintaining healthy cell membranes.
Hyperlipidemia is a condition characterized by abnormally elevated levels of cholesterol in the plasma of the blood.

The causes of hyperlipidemia are unknown. However, an unhealthy diet with a lot of unsaturated fat and trans fat is associated with the early onset of the disease. Foods such as cheese egg yolks fried and processed foods and red meat have found to increase blood cholesterol, long-term intake of such foods in great amount have been found to increase the risk of hyperlipidemia, epidemiological studies found.

The Beni-Suef University, in the study to determine the development of obesity in response to a high-fat diet (HFD) an Egyptian Herbal mixture formulation (HMF), including fennel, showed, "feeding HFD diet significantly increased final body weight, triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol, & LDL concentration compared with controls, while significantly decreasing HD".

Hyperlipidemia is a lifelong condition that is treatable.

Dr. Robert B. Kelly at the Fairview Hospital/Cleveland Clinic Family Medicine Residency Program in the article "The most beneficial changes result from reducing intake of saturated and trans fats; increasing intake of polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats; fortifying foods with plant stanols or sterols; isocalorically adding tree nuts to the diet; consuming one or two alcoholic drinks per day; and adopting a Portfolio, Mediterranean, low-carbohydrate, or low-fat diet. Smaller but still beneficial effects result from reducing intake of dietary cholesterol, increasing intake of soluble fiber and soy protein, and eating fatty marine fish or taking marine-derived omega-3 fatty acid supplements".
Therefore by changing the diet pattern and engaging in regular physical exercise are the fundamental
options that not only can prevent the onset of the condition, particularly in people who are at a higher risk of hyperlipidemia, and also treat high blood cholesterol in patients who already have the condition.

Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is a plant species of a genus, belonging to Apiaceae (Umbelliferae), native to the Mediterranean.

The plant has been used in traditional and herbal medicine as a warming, carminative, antispasmodic, antidepressant agent and to stimulate the appetite, ease indigestion, soothe coughing, reduce intestinal spasms, regulate the menstrual cycle, and relieve PMS.

In the study to examine the effect of the aqueous extract of fennel in the reduced risk of hyperlipidemia, researchers conducted an experiment in Triton WR-1339 induced hyperlipidemia in mice.

Mice treated with the extract at different doses display a significant reduction of cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL-cholesterol, and apolipoprotein-B decreased by 40%, 23%, 61%, and 61%, respectively.

Further analysis, the application also increased the levels of HDL-cholesterol and apolipoprotein A1 by 85% and 58%, respectively

Also according to the Mashhad University of Medical Sciences which also conducted a study to assess the effects of Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare Mill.) on lipid profiles, in sixty eligible postmenopausal women, randomly assigned into the fennel and placebo groups.

Measurement of total blood cholesterol, cholesterol fractions, and triglycerides was tested at the baseline, and after a three-month follow-up.

At the end of 3 months, blood profiled withdrawn from the women suggested
* There are no significant difference in triglyceride (P = 0.679), total cholesterol (P = 0.103), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol(LDL-C; P = 0.146) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C; P = 0.266) levels between the two groups.

* Fennel treated group demonstrates a significant borderline improvement for HDL-C and triglyceride, compared to the placebo group.

Additional differentiation of the process of the double-blind, randomized, and placebo-controlled trial, researchers suggested that longer durations, higher doses, and larger sample sizes are recommended to validate the results.

These results indicated that intake of foods for the treatment of conditions or diseases must be on a long-term basis. The times of 3 months may be too short for foods to exert their potential effects.

Taken all together, fennel may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of hyperlipidemia. Intake of fennel should be increased gradually for the food to reach its antihyperlipidemic stage, a longer duration may be needed. In other words, please be patient.

Beta-Sitosterol Reduces the Risk of Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease

By Kyle J. Norton

The liver is the largest internal organ with a function which filters the blood from the intestinal tract before passing them to the heart and other parts of the body.

Additionally, the liver also produces bile to aid digestion and cholesterol to build strong cell membranes, production of vitamin D and steroid hormones.

Furthermore, the liver also processes a function of detoxifying chemicals and metabolizes drugs.

Nonalcoholic liver disease is a chronic condition caused by fat accumulated over time in the liver, affecting people who drink little to no alcohol.

In other words, if you have fat that makes up over 5% of the liver, you are considered to have fatty liver disease.

Nonalcoholic liver disease can be classified into the noninflammatory fatty liver and inflammatory liver steatohepatitis.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is one of the major causes of cirrhosis and liver cancer.

According to world statistics, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is normally known as a disease of the Western world(2). However, due to the economic prosperity of Southeast Asian(3), the disease also was found in a large population in the cities, causing concerns of many scientists in the region(4)(6).

According to the joint assessment of the prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and risk factors for advanced fibrosis and mortality in the US, led by the Stanford University School of Medicine, "The prevalence of NAFLD in the United States (U.S.) has risen from 18% in 1988–1991 to 31% in 2011–2012. Estimates of NAFLD prevalence for adults in Western countries are 20–30%, with much higher prevalence in adults with obesity (80–90%), diabetes (30–50%), and hyperlipidemia (90%)"(5).

Among the more affluent regions of China, the prevalence rate of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is approximately 15%(6). The number may decrease substantially if the poor rural populations where obesity is non-existence are also taking into account(7).

The most common complications of NAFLD are
*  increased mortality and increased cancer risk, particularly liver cancer, among patients discharged with a diagnosis of alcoholic fatty liver.

* increased progression of cirrhosis, accompanied by complications that include variceal bleeding, ascites, encephalopathy, and liver failure.

Beta-Sitosterol is a phytochemical in the class of Phytosterols, belongings to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in avocados, rice bran, wheat germ, corn oils, fennel, peanuts, soybeans, hawthorn, basil, buckwheat. etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the prevention and treatment of liver diseases, researchers examined the potential protective effects against NAFLD in growing rats fed a high-fructose diet, modeling children fed obesogenic diets.

The study included Forty-four 21-day old male rat pups randomly allocated to and administered the following treatments for 12 weeks:
* Group I- standard rat chow (SRC) + plain drinking water (PW) + plain gelatine cube (PC);

* Group II- SRC+ 20% w/v fructose solution (FS) as drinking fluid + PC;

* Group III- SRC + FS + 100 mg/kg fenofibrate in gelatine cube; and

* Group IV- SRC + FS + 20 mg/kg β-sitosterol gelatine cube (Bst) and group V- SRC + PW + Bst.

According to the chemical analysis, rats treated with high-fructose diet caused the increased (p<0.05) hepatic lipid (total) accretion (>10% liver mass), micro- and macro-vesicular hepatic steatosis and hepatic inflammation.

In other words, a high-fructose diet in vivo increased the risk of NAFLD and possibly initiated the onset of NAFLD.

β-sitosterol and fenofibrate treatment restore the liver integrity by inhibiting the high-fructose diet-induced macrovesicular steatosis and prevented the progression of NAFLD to steatohepatitis.

Moreover, β-sitosterol was also found to mitigate diet-induced NAFLD.

Taken altogether, beta-sitosterol may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of NAFLD, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of beta-Sitosterol in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Phytochemical Sinigrin Found in Brussels Sprout, and Broccoli Processes Anti-Chronic Inflammatory Diseases Property, According to Research

By Kyle J. Norton

Sinigrin may be used as a natural and bioactive compound against diseases associated with chronic inflammation, according to studies.

Acute inflammation that lasts a day or 2 mostly associated with proinflammatory response to tissue injury, usually appearing within minutes or hours, depending on the severity of the damage.

In other words, in the acute phase of inflammation, the immune system response of the macrophages stimulates the process of coagulation to cover the wound or injure and production of the inflammatory cytokines to destroy the foreign pathogens which try to enter the body through the wound or injury.

The most common symptoms of acute inflammation are pain, redness, loss of function, swelling, and heat.

In the acute phase of inflammation, overproduction of proinflammatory cytokines which protect our body against foreign invasion may damage the nearby tissues and death of the healthy cell, leading to the abnormal formation of scars.

Chronic inflammation is a medical condition caused by the inability of the immune system to kill off all pathogens in the acute phase of inflammation, leading to the compromise of the immune system.

Chronic inflammation is a leading cause of various types of disease, including cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and arthritis.

Unlike the symptoms of acute inflammation, symptoms of chronic inflammation are totally depending on the types of disease and location of the inflammation, including fatigue and unintended weight loss and loss of appetite in cancer, chest pain in chronic lung disease, and joint pain in RA.

On finding a natural compound for the treatment of diseases associated with chronic inflammation, researchers investigated the effect of sinigrin on macrophage function.

In RAW 264.7 cells in a concentration-dependent manner, sinigrin inhibited lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced production of proinflammatory cytokines including nitric oxide (NO) and the expression of COX-2 and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2).

Injection of sinigrin significantly suppressed the production of pro-inflammatory tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α and interleukin (IL)-6 by suppressing the protein in the cellular response to oxidative stress and stimuli.

Additional analysis, sinigrin also processed a significant effect in inhibiting genes expression involved in the mediation of innate immunity and inflammatory responses.

Dr. Lee HW, the lead scientist, wrote in the final report, " Our findings also provide evidence that the pharmacological modulation of sinigrin could have an anti-inflammatory effect".

In lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced neuroinflammation, AITC protected the microglial cells against neuroinflammation by inhibiting the cellular response against oxidative stress-induced the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) expression, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6), prostaglandin E2 (PGE2).

In other words, AITC protects neuroblastoma cells by controlling with JNK/NF-κB/TNF-α cross-linking associated with the expression of the gene in inducing apoptosis.

Dr. Subedi L, the lead scientist, after taking into account co and confounders said, "These findings provide novel insights into the anti-neuroinflammatory effects of AITC on microglial cells, which may have clinical significance in neurodegeneration".

Taken altogether, sinigrin may be considered a functional supplement for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with chronic inflammation, pending the confirmation of a large sample size and multicenter human study.

However, intake of bioactive in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care, as liver toxicity may be induced if overdosed.

Herbal Turmeric Cures Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) in Vivo, Scientists Find

By Kyle J. Norton

Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is a type of arthritis associated with inflammation that affects mostly the flexible (synovial) joints and tissues and organs in the body.

RA affects more women than men and generally occurred after the age of 40, causing the diminished quality of life of many older adults.

According to CDC, Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) affect over 52 million of adults in the US alone, including 294,000 children under age 18 with some form of arthritis or rheumatic conditions.

Rheumatoid Arthritis can induce bone loss through elevating bone resorption without increasing bone formation.

A cross-sectional population-based study of 1042 patients with rheumatoid arthritis showed that RA patients had an increased risk of death from various causes.

The symptoms of RA that affect
* The feet and joints
Patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) often associate valgus deformities of the feet and deformities of gait due to body function in an effort to support the collapsing longitudinal arch of the foot.

* The gait
Dr. Weiss RJ. and the research team at the Karolinska Institutet showed that the kinematic and kinetic gait changes in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients are the result of a significant reduction in joint motions, joint moments, such as decreased hip flexion-extension range, hip abduction, knee flexion-extension range,

* The hands
The deformation of RA's hands can be described through the defects of bone ankylosis as a result of bone damage to the prolonged onset of the disease.

* The Muscle strength
The reduced muscle strength in patients with RA may contribute to the prevalence of functional limitations physically,

Other symptoms of RA include

* Rheumatoid Nodules
Rheumatoid nodules, lumps on the skin, close to the joint have been found to affect the joints of patients with rheumatoid nodules.

* Conjunctival nodules
Although is rare in patients with rheumatoid arthritis, the appearance of the nodules may exhibit the
the severity of the underlying disease.

6. Morning stiffness
Morning stiffness, as a marker of inflammatory activity in reflecting functional disability and pain is a very common symptom of patients in early rheumatoid arthritis.

If you have some of the aforementioned symptoms, you may have RA. Please make sure you check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as an anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

With an aim to find potential treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), researchers investigated the protective activity of two different doses of a mixture of ginger and turmeric rhizomes powder suspended in distilled water (GTaq) against inflammation in an animal model.

Rats adjuvant-induced arthritis (AIA) by a single intradermal injection of 0.1 mL of Complete Freund's adjuvant (containing heat-killed Mycobacterium tuberculosis) into the palmar surface of the left hind paw were given orally and daily (for 28 consecutive days) distilled water as vehicles, indomethacin (1.0 mg/kg body weight), or GTaq (200 or 400 mg/kg body weight) from the day of arthritis induction.

Suspended in distilled water (GTaq)are more effective (4.2-38.4% higher, P < 0.05-0.001) than indomethacin (a non-steroidal/anti-inflammatory drug) in alleviating the loss in body weight gain, the histopathological changes in ankle joints.

Blood leukocytosis and thrombocytosis associated with the inflammation are also reduced by being suspended in distilled water (GTaq).

Rish factors involved the risk of cardiovascular disease and kidney damage rats adjuvant-induced arthritis were also decreased by the injection of GTaq.

Further differentiation of the anti-RA activity of GTaq, researchers found that the efficacy of the mixture was attributed to the increasing the food intake and decreasing the systemic inflammation associated with the inhibition of polyarthritis, oxidative stress, and dyslipidemia.
Based on the findings, researchers said, "Ginger-turmeric rhizomes mixture may be effective against RA severity and complications as shown in an AIA rat model".

In order to obtain more information about turmeric anti RA activity, researchers investigated the curcuminoid-containing turmeric extracts in the prevention or treatment of arthritis using streptococcal cell wall (SCW)-induced arthritis.

According to the tested assays, essential oil-depleted turmeric fraction containing 41% of the three major curcuminoids was efficacious in preventing joint inflammation at the start of the disease but not after, the onset of joint inflammation.

Interestingly, compared to other curcumin treatment groups, a commercial sample containing 94% of the three major curcuminoids was more potent in preventing arthritis in the same dose per weight.

These results strongly suggested only the three major curcuminoids found in turmeric process antiarthritic effect, compared to the treatment of the whole food.

In other words, all compounds except three major curcuminoids of the crude turmeric extract may inhibit this protective effect.

Taken altogether, turmeric used alone or combined with other herbal medicines may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of RA, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Beta-Sitosterol in the Promotion of Immunomodulatory Activity

By Kyle J. Norton

The immune system is the set of cells associated with the activity against antigens or infectious agents.
It is one of the body's defense system against diseases.

The immune system does a great job of keeping people healthy and preventing infections.

Besides foods and nutritional supplements, herbs also play important roles in helping the immune system to defend against viruses and bacteria attacks.

A variety of factors have been found to trigger immune responses include pathogens, damaged cells, and toxic compounds.

Immune dysfunction is a chronic condition, depending on the parts of the immune system affected.

There are 2 types of immune dysfunction. The underactive immune system is also known as weakened immune system People with the underactive immune system are susceptible to infection, recurrent infections, autoimmune disorders, damage to heart, lungs, nervous system or digestive tract, increased risk of cancer, malnutrition, and death from a serious infection.

Immunomodulation is a process in which an immune response is altered to the desired level. In other words, under the immunomodulatory effect, the immune system is responding correctly to the desire of the body, regardless of types of immune dysfunction.

More precisely, immunomodulation is an action with a profound and positive effect in regulated immune response and function through activation of antibody formation or the inhibition of white blood cell activity.

Beta-Sitosterol is a phytochemical in the class of Phytosterols, belongings to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in avocados, rice bran, wheat germ, corn oils, fennel, peanuts, soybeans, hawthorn, basil, buckwheat. etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the improvement of the immune functioning, researchers examined the immunomodulatory effects of Beta-sitosterol (BSS) on the pig immune system using in vitro cell cultures and in vivo activity in fattener pigs after vaccination with porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) modified life vaccine (MLV).

According to the chemical analysis,
* In vitro, BSS increased viable peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) numbers that act as an immune response to pathogens and activated swine dendritic cells (DCs) that act as messengers between the innate and the adaptive immune systems.in culture.

* In vivo, pigs treated with phytosterols prior to vaccination with PRRSV-MLV vaccine exhibited some changes in immunological parameters at different times post-vaccination, such as the proliferation ability of PBMC as well as increasing the apolipoprotein A1 plasma concentration which may contribute to enhance PRRSV vaccine response.

Based on the findings, researchers said, " In conclusion, the data in this report show that BSS can be considered an immunomodulator in pigs".

Taken altogether, beta-Sitosterol may be considered a supplement for the improvement of immunomodulatory activity, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of beta-Sitosterol in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Antioxidant 3,3'-Diindolylmethane Found in Cruciferous Vegetables May Process Anti Prostate Cancer Activity, According to Researchers

Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a plan-based bioactive compound for the treatment of prostate cancer with no side effects, according to studies.

Prostate cancer is a medical condition caused by cell growth disorderly in the tissue of the prostate glands. Prostate cancer is one of the most slow-growing cancers that take years to develop.

The disease often is discovered during the rectum examination annually. Most cases of prostate cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of prostate tissue.

In the early stage, patients may not experience any symptoms. However, at the advanced stage, prostate cancer can induce symptoms of blood in the urine and semen, disruption of urinary passing, frequent and urged urinary.

In severe cases, prostate cancer can also cause erectile dysfunction.

According to statistics, 1 man in 9 will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime.

Most cases ( about 60%) of prostate cancer are found in older men, particularly in the African-American. The 5-year survival rate of local or regional prostate cancer is nearly 100.

Out of many risk factors, an unhealthy diet may be one of the major risk factors associated with the onset of the disease.

Some researchers in the study of the preventive diet against prostate cancer wrote, " Although the available data are not entirely consistent, possible preventative behavioral factors include increased physical activity, intakes of tomatoes, cruciferous vegetables, and soy. Factors that may enhance prostate cancer risk include frequent consumption of dairy products and, possibly, meat".

" By comparison, alcohol probably exerts no important influence on prostate cancer development. Similarly, dietary supplements are unlikely to protect against the onset of prostate cancer in healthy men".

"Several factors, such as smoking and obesity, show a weak association with prostate cancer incidence but a positive relation with prostate cancer mortality. Other factors, such as fish intake, also appear to be unassociated with incident prostate cancer but show an inverse relation with fatal prostate cancer".

3,3'-Diindolylmethane or DIM are phytochemicals derived from the digestion of indole-3-carbinol, belonging to the group of Indoles, found abundantly in broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, and kale, etc.

Researchers on finding a natural compound for the treatment of prostate cancer examined the effect of 3,3'-Diindolylmethane (DIM) as tumor inhibitors in multiple malignant tumors on microRNAs (miRNAs).

Tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) and 3,3'-Diindolylmethane (DIM) application showed a significant effect in the inhibition of proliferation and invasion of prostate cancer cells.

Furthermore, Tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) and 3,3'-Diindolylmethane (DIM) treatment induced cancer death by inhibiting the expression level of CYP1A1, an enzyme associated with the activation of the compounds with carcinogenic properties.

In other words, Tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) and 3,3'-Diindolylmethane (DIM) treatment activated the expression of MAP3K12 in the promotion of cancer cells by targeting the mRNA of miR-150-5p in prostate cancer cells.

Moreover, in order to reveal more information of DIM anti-prostate cancer activity, researchers examine the modulation of the immune system by cancer-protective food bioactive, indole-3-carbinol (I3C) and 3,3'-diindolylmethane (DIM).

Injection of indole-3-carbinol (I3C) and 3,3'-diindolylmethane (DIM), exerted prostate cell protective effect by the regulation of inflammatory responses in monocytes and macrophages of the immune system.

In other words, I3C and DIM inhibited the lipopolysaccharide (LPS), the major component of the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria in the induction of IL-1β mRNA associated with the immune response to infection and protein in the monocyte form of the white blood cells.

I3C and DIM also exerted anti-inflammatory activity by inhibiting the expression of gene CD84 mRNA in signaling T-cell activation by regulating the proteins associated with the expression of the gene.

Dr. Wang TTY and colleagues after taking into account co and confounders, wrote, "cross-talk between AHR(protein associated with regulating gene expression) and inflammation-mediated pathways, but not CD84-mediated pathways, in monocytes but not macrophages may contribute to the modulation of tumor environments by I3C and DIM in prostate cancer'.

The results strongly suggested that DIM modulated the immune function against the process of prostate cancer development and progression.

Taken altogether, DIM may be considered a supplement for the prevention and combined with primary medicine for the treatment of prostate cancer, pending the confirmation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of DIM in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
