Whole Food Tomato Apoptoses Liver Cancer Better Than of Doxorubicin and Camptothecin in Vitro

By Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is a class of diseases caused by cells growth disorderly and uncontrollably in our body.

Liver cancer is a chronic and medical condition associated with irregular cell growth in the liver tissues.

The liver is the largest internal organ that only filters out blood from the intestine before passing them to other parts of the body, but also produces bile to aid digestion, build strong cell walls and vitamin D and steroid hormones.

The liver jointed with kidney and skin is considered 3 detoxed organs in the human.

Most common liver cancers are
* Hepatocellular carcinoma, is a most common liver cancer accounting, accounting for 75 percent of all cases caused by the DNA alternation of hepatocytes, predominant liver cells.

Epidemiologically, primarily hepatocellular carcinoma has been found to metastasize to pancreas, intestines, and stomach.

* Cholangiocarcinoma, also known as bile duct cancer, is caused by abnormal cells growth in the small, tube-like bile ducts in the liver, accounting to 10 to 20% of all liver cancer cases.

Out of many prevalent factors that cause the onset of liver cancer, some researchers suggested that the promotion of a high-fat diet over the past few decades may have a strong impact to increase the risk of liver cancer.

Dr. Qiu-Ye Lan, the lead scientist wrote, "Healthy dietary patterns may prevent many chronic diseases and is emphasized by 2015 US dietary guideline, but it remains unclear which dietary patterns may be a benefit to prevention of primary liver cancer (PLC)"

And, "Our findings suggest that the UPDP (an urban prudent dietary pattern (UPDP)) and TCDP (traditional Cantonese dietary pattern (TCDP) )were associated with lower, whereas the MPFP with the higher, risk of PLC".

Tomato is red, edible fruit, genus Solanum, belongings to family Solanaceae, native to South America. Because of its health benefits, the tomato is grown worldwide for the commercial purpose
and often in the greenhouse.

In the urgency to discover healthy foods for the treatment of liver cancer, researchers examined the effect of the tomato antiproliferative activities against human colon (HT29) and liver (HepG2) cancer cells.

Application of the tetrasaccharide tomato glycoalkaloid alpha-tomatine, the trisaccharide beta(1)-tomatine, the disaccharide gamma-tomatine, the monosaccharide delta-tomatine, and their common aglycon tomatidine showed better inhibition of liver cancer cell compared to the tested colon cell line.

Additonally, alpha-tomatine isolated from tomato at a concentration of 1 microg/mL demonstrated  a greater effect against liver carcinoma cells compared to those of anticancer drugs doxorubicin and camptothecin

Furthermore, alpha-tomatine also inhibited normal human liver HeLa (Chang) cells without inducing any side effects.

Also in vitro, according to the tested assays,
* Alpha-tomatine isolated from green tomatoes induced liver cancer cells death compared to little inhibition of the cells by the three low-tomatine red tomato extracts.

* Alpha-Tomatine from tomato also was highly effective in inhibiting all of the liver cell lines, compared to had little cell inhibition of ehydrotomatine, tomatidenol, and tomatidine.

Collectively, the results not only showed the susceptibility to destruction varies with the nature of the alkaloid and plant extract but also how phytochemical in plant worked synergistically in cancer inhibition.

Dr. Friedman M, the lead scientist said, "These findings extend related observations on the anticarcinogenic potential of glycoalkaloids and suggest that consumers may benefit by eating not only high-lycopene red tomatoes but also green tomatoes containing glycoalkaloids".

Taken altogether, tomato processed a high amount of lycopene may be considered a dietary supplements for the prevention and treatment of liver cancer, pending to large sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of lycopene in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Healthy Food Onion Protects the vascular endothelial Functioning Against Cardiovascular Disease

By Kyle J. Norton

Vasoprotection is the process to improve the function of the blood vessels, including the use of the herbal and natural remedy.

Blood vessels are the tubular structure including a vein, artery, or capillary which carries the blood through the tissues and organs pumped by the heart.

There 3 main types of the blood vessel are arteries that deliver oxygen-rich blood from the heart to the tissues and organs of the body. Damage of arteries may induce coronary artery disease associated with the narrowing or blockage of the coronary arteries due to plaques accumulated on the arterial wall.

The veins that carry blood toward the heart. Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) is a common condition associated with disease of the veins that affects up to 20 percent of adults.

The capillaries or the smallest blood vessels has been found to induce systemic capillary leak syndrome (SCLS) is a rare acquired disorder.

Endothelial dysfunction is a condition characterized by the damage of the vascular endothelium, the thin layer of cells that lines blood vessels, a leading cause of the cardiovascular disease (CVD).

In other words, the vascular endothelium dysfunction reduced the function of targeting free radical that lead to the onset of oxidative stress.

Most common risk factors associated with vascular endothelium dysfunction are impaired vasodilation, deficiency of nitric oxide, and inflammation, and thrombosis.

Conventionally, treatments of vascular endothelial dysfunction are totally depending on the causes of the disease. Early detection has been found to play a critical role that recovers endothelial function".

Dr. Hirata Y. at The University of Tokyo.wrote, "Vascular endothelial dysfunction reflected by reduced nitric oxide (NO) availability is certainly the causative factor or promoting mechanism of arteriosclerosis. It is necessary to detect endothelial dysfunction at an early stage using appropriate methods, and to choose a treatment for the recovery of endothelial function".

And, "There are nonpharmacological and pharmacological therapies to attain endothelial repair. The former includes bodyweight reduction, aerobic exercise, and restriction of salt intake, while the latter includes the use of renin-angiotensin system inhibitors, calcium antagonists, some types of beta-blockers, statins, erythropoietin, tetrahydrobiopterin, and antioxidants".

The onion is a plant in the genus Allium, belongings to the family Alliaceae, a close relation of garlic. It is often called the "king of vegetables" because of its pungent taste and found in a large number of recipes and preparations spanning almost the totality of the world's cultures.

Depending on the variety, an onion can be sharp, spicy, tangy, pungent, mild or sweet.

On finding a potent ingredient which processes vasoprotective activity researchers examined quercetin, a dietary polyphenol found abundantly in onion on vascular endothelial dysfunction (VED).

Epidemiologically, quercetin showed significant activity against the VED complication in the induction of oxidative stress, impaired vasodilation, platelet aggregation, and monocyte adhesion leading to the early event of morbidity and mortality in patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD).

Quercetin efficacy that protects against VED and decreases CVD risk was attributed to its antioxidant, vasodilatory, anti-platelet, and anti-atherogenic activities.

Futhermore, in vitro, quercetin exerted multiple actions on the NO-guanylyl cyclase pathway associated with the smooth muscle tone in bronchi or vessels, endothelium-derived hyperpolarizing factor(s) and endothelin-1 involved in vasoconstriction and endothelial function.

Moreover, the phytochemical also protected endothelial cells against apoptosis.

In vivo, quercetin prevented endothelial dysfunction by reducing blood pressure, oxidative stress and end-organ damage in hypertensive animals.

In other words, regular intake of quercetin improves the endothelium functioning against the risk of VED inducing cardiovascular disease, particularly in patients with hypertension and ischemic heart disease.

Taken altogether, onion processed a higher mount of quercetin may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of vascular endothelial dysfunction, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Phytochemical Indicaxanthin processes A Potent Anti-Inflammatory Property

By Kyle J. Norton

Inflammation is a natural defense of the immune system that protects the body against the invasion of harmful stimuli and pathogens.

Anti-inflammatory activity is the process to reduce inflammation or swelling without affecting the function of the immune system.

In the acute phase of infection, the immune first line of defense, the white blood cells, macrophages stimulates the production of blood platelet to cover the wound or cut and proinflammatory cytokines to destroy all invaders.

Most cases of acute infection are stopped at this phase and the wound is healed itself quickly.

However, if the wound is too large, then the recovery may take a longer period and through 4 overlap recovery stages. Any interruption in the overlapped recover stage may cause the formation of scars.

Moreover, overproduction of proinflammatory cytokines that kills harmful pathogens may cause damage and death of nearby healthy cells, leading to the formation of scars, such as scar in the liver caused by hepatitis infection.

Additionally,  if the immune system can not destroy the invasive pathogens in a set of times, it will compromise, leading to low-grade inflammation. Prolonged low-grade inflammation caused by continuing the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines can result in serious and chronic diseases.

Diseases associated with chronic inflammation induced by protein, lipid and cellular damage include cardiovascular disease, diabetes, neurodegenerative disease,... and cancers.

The results have been found to cause cell death and alternation of cell DNA.

On finding a potent compound which processes anti-inflammatory property, researchers investigated the activity of indicaxanthin, in an animal model of acute inflammation.

According to the tested differentiation of rat induced by injection of 0.2 mL of λ-carrageenin in the pleural cavity pretreated by indicaxanthin at 2 μmol/kg,
* Pretreatment of the phytochemical inhibited the release of pro-inflammatory PGE(2) (91.4%), NO (67.7%), IL-1β (53.6%), and TNF-α (71.1%) induced by carrageenan-induced rats.

* Furthermore, enzymes and protein associated with the production of proinflammatory cytokines such as IL-1β (34.5%), TNF-α (81.6%), iNOS (75.2%), and COX2 (87.7%) mRNA were also inhibited by the pretreatment of indicaxanthin.

* iNOS (71.9%) and COX-2 (65.9%) enzyme expressions involved in the inflammatory processes that recruits the leukocytes also inhibited by the bioactive compound.

* Moreover, enzymes associated with the induction of free radicals chain reaction were also curbed by the indicaxanthin at a time- and dose-dependently.

Pharmacokinetically, the most efficacy in inhibition of inflammation was found to have a maximum 0.22 ± 0.02 μmol/L (n = 15) plasma concentration of indicaxanthin, with a half-life of 1.15 ± 0.11 h.

Based on the findings, researchers said, " this dietary pigment has the potential to improve health and prevent inflammation-based disorders".

Taken altogether, indicaxanthin may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of inflammation, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Turmeric Inhibits Risk Factors Associated with Cardiovascular Disease (CVD)

By Kyle J. Norton

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a group of diseases associated with blood vessels and heart muscle.

Depending on the types of blood vessel damage or blocked, and heart muscle damage, CVD can be a coronary artery disease caused by the hardening of the arteries that interfere with the blood flow to the heart or stroke caused by reducing oxygen supply to the brain cells.

Coronary artery disease is a condition in most cases associated with an inflammatory cholesterol-containing plaque in the arteries.

Stroke can be caused by reduced blood flow or small blood vessel bleeding, leading to the death of neurons that affect parts of the brain functioning.

Heart failure, a major health problem associated with the reduced function of the heart affects more than 6.5 million Americans, a leading cause of hospitalization in people older than age 65.

According to the statistics provided by the CDC, every year, heart disease causes the death of 610,000 people in the United States. In other words, every year, 1 in every 4 deaths in the US are caused by heart disease.

Believe it or not, every year about 735,000 Americans have a heart attack including the first attack of 525,000 patients.

Although there are many prevalent factors associated with cardiovascular disease including family history, age ethnicity, gender, medical conditions such as cholesterol high blood pressure and diabetes, some researchers suggested the promotion of a high-fat diet over the past few decades induced widespread obesity may be one major condition that causes the onset of CVD.

Dr. Kachur S wrote, " Obesity is increasingly more common in postindustrial societies, and the burden of childhood obesity is increasing. The major effects of obesity on cardiovascular (CV) health are mediated through the risk of metabolic syndrome (insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, and hypertension), such that an absence of these risk factors in obese individuals may not be associated with increased mortality risk".

And, "The negative effects of obesity on CV health manifest as the accelerated progression of atherosclerosis, higher rates of ventricular remodeling and a higher risk of associated diseases, including stroke, myocardial infarction, and heart failure".

In other words, if you are obese, your risk of CVD is substantially higher compared to a non-obese individual.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belongings to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

On findings a potential compound for the treatment of cardiovascular disease (CVD), researchers examined the efficacy of curcumin in the inhibition of cardio-risk factors.

According to the results of the comprehensive literature searching the PubMed, Embase, Ovid, Medline and Cochrane Library databases identified 7 randomized controlled trials including 649 patients, administration of turmeric and curcumin significantly reduced the levels of serum low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and TG and triglycerides (TG) compared to the control group without affecting the levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C).

Furthermore, turmeric and curcumin lower the levels of total cholesterol (TC) in patients with metabolic syndrome.

However, turmeric extract may process a greater effect on reducing serum TC levels compared to curcumin.

Most importantly, turmeric and curcumin showed no serious adverse events in all studies.

In other words, turmeric and curcumin inhibited the parameters associated with risk factors of cardiovascular disease with no side effects.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "turmeric and curcumin may protect patients at risk of CVD through improving serum lipid levels. Curcumin may be used as a well-tolerated dietary adjunct to conventional drugs".

Taken altogether, turmeric processed abundantly bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Phytochemical Alliin, The Best Natural Antioxidants

By Kyle J. Norton

Antioxidants are stable atoms that inhibit oxidation caused by free radicals.

Free radicals, on the other hand, are unstable atoms with an unpaired electron in the outermost ring.

Therefore, in order for them to achieve stable, free radicals are always ready to intercept or donate an electron to other stable atoms, leading to a cascade that cannot be stopped until all electrons in the outermost ring are paired or inhibited by antioxidants.

Overexpression of free radicals in the long-term can lead to oxidative stress, leading to proteins and lipids and cell damage in facilitating the onset of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, neuro diseases,... and caners.

Most cases of oxidative stress is a result of an imbalance of the ratio of the levels of free radicals and antioxidant.

Believe it or not, free radicals in a moderate amount and in the control of the presence of antioxidant are essential for the body in food and energy metabolism and blood circulation.

Dr. V. Lobo, the lead scientist in the evaluation of "Free radicals, antioxidants, and functional foods: Impact on human health". wrote, "Free radicals reactive oxygen species and reactive nitrogen species are generated by our body by various endogenous systems, exposure to different physiochemical conditions or pathological states. A balance between free radicals and antioxidants is necessary for proper physiological function".

And, " Synthetic antioxidants such as butylated hydroxytoluene and butylated hydroxyanisole have recently been reported to be dangerous for human health. Thus, the search for effective, nontoxic natural compounds with antioxidative activity has been intensified in recent years".

The results suggested by maintaining an adequate amount of functional foods (not synthetic antioxidants) with plenty of antioxidant, oxidative stress may be preventable.

Alliin (S-allyl-L-cysteine-S-oxide) is a phytochemical compound sulfoxide,. a derivative of the amino acid cysteine, belonging to the class of sulfur compounds, found abundantly in fresh garlic and onion.

With an aim to find the potential compound for the treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, researchers examined the antioxidant activity of bioactive compound alliin.

Compared to garlic compounds representing the four main chemical classes, alliin, allyl cysteine, allyl disulfide, and allicin, prepared by chemical synthesis or purification, researchers found that alliin showed a better-scavenged superoxide property, particularly in hydroxyl radicals compared to others compound.

Allicin, a derivative of alliin suppressed the formation of superoxide by the xanthine/xanthine oxidase system, probably via a thiol and allicin exchange mechanism in the prevention of formation of free radicals.

However, Alliin and allicin did not prevent induced microsomal lipid peroxidation.

In other words, alliin is antioxidants with the free radical scavenging property.

Dr. Chung LY said in the final report, "allyl disulfide, alliin, allicin, and allyl cysteine exhibit different patterns of antioxidant activities as protective compounds against free radical damage".

In bone resorption associated with osteoclast differentiation and fusion, alliin (S-allyl-l-cysteine sulfoxides, SACSO) displayed a significant antioxidant activity by inhibiting the osteoclastogenesis with a dose-dependent manner via blocking the (c-Fos-NFATc1) signaling pathway involved cell differentiation and fusion.

Furthermore, alliin protected the bone density by decreasing the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and inhibiting the expression of (NADPH oxidase 1 (Nox1)) protein associated with elevated ROS reactive oxygen.

Taken altogether, alliin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of diseases involved in oxidative stress, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of alliin in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Healthy Food Turmeric, a Natural Prevention and Treatment of Ulcerative Colitis (UC)<, Researchers Say

By Kyle J. Norton

Ulcerative colitis is a type of inflammatory bowel disease induced chronic inflammation and ulcers (sores) in the digestive tract.

The disease affects the colon and the rectum, leading to bloody diarrhea accompanied by symptoms of belly pain, not feeling hungry, fatigue, weight loss, dehydration.

Some patients may also experience symptoms of joint pain or soreness and sudden urges to empty the colon right away.

The UC is caused by the immune system mistakenly attacks the cell of the colon, leading to low-grade inflammation.

According to the statistic, in the US, approximately, 1.6 million Americans are living with inflammatory bowel disease, including 907,000 people with ulcerative colitis.

More precisely, the risk of people diagnosed with ulcerative colitis per 100,000 person-years is between 2 and 14.

Conventionally, the treatment of UC is focused on reduced symptoms and prevent the fare up. In some cases, surgery may be necessary if the medication fails.

The are many prevalent factors associated with UC, including aging, ethnicity, and family. However, some researchers suggested that the promotion of a high-fat diet over the past few decades may have a strong implication in inducing the rise of ulcerative colitis.

Dr. Mitsuro Chiba, the lead scientist wrote, " Diets rich in animal protein (risk factor) and deficient in dietary fiber (preventive factor) are characteristic of westernized diets in affluent societies. Recent research shows that westernized diets are associated with reduced gut microbial diversity (dysbiosis), which may result in increased susceptibility to IBD and other common chronic diseases".

And, "Plant-based diets rich in dietary fiber are associated with increased microbial diversity. Recent reports on IBD therapy that replaced westernized diets with plant-based diets achieved far better outcomes than those previously reported in the literature. We believe that westernized diet-associated gut dysbiosis is the most ubiquitous environmental factor in IBD".

The results strongly link the risk of IBD in people who follow the Western diet.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of ulcerative colitis, researchers conducted a systematical review and meta-analyze on the efficacy of oral curcumin administration as adjuvant therapy of UC. MEDLINE, Cochrane/CENTRAL, ClinicalTrials.gov, WHO-ICT.

According to the findings, With the M-H method, treatment with curcumin was significantly superior to placebo but not in the intention-to-treat (ITT) analysis.

However, with the more accurate B-B method, both analyses were found to be insignificant.

In other words, oral curcumin administration was not superior to placebo in attaining remission in patients with UC.

In other to clarify the effect of curcumin on UC, a joint study led by the Bassett Medical Center was conducted by searching the databases of medical literature in the MEDLINE, Pubmed, and Embase through December 2017.

According to the results of 3 randomized controlled trials including 142 patients included in the study, clinical improvement, endoscopic remission, and improvement rate also trended higher in the curcumin group compared to placebo.

In other words, higher clinical remission rates when curcumin was used in combination with mesalamine to achieve remission in patients with UC.

Dr. Iqb al U, the lead scientist wrote, "Curcumin, due to its cost effectiveness and safer side effect profile, can decrease the healthcare burden and morbidity associated with this relapsing and remitting disease".

Taken altogether, turmeric processed a high amount of bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements for the prevention of ulcerative colitis, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Ashwagandha Improved Muscle Mass and Strength In Exercise

By Kyle J. Norton

The Muscle is a soft tissue in the body containing protein filaments of actin and myosin that slide past one another, with a function to produce force and motion.

In other words, muscle contraction and expansion that changes both the length and the shape allow us to move and lift.

Muscle mass is the calculation of the weight of the muscles in the body in kilograms or pounds. However, other factors may also interfere with the above calculation including height, ethnicity, and fitness level.

Increased muscle mass is associated with lower fat accumulation and the ability to burn calories/energy.

Some researchers suggested, by boosting your muscle mass, you will also improve your health, including
* Boosts your metabolism. Dr. Alexandra C. McPherron, the lead scientist said, "increasing skeletal muscle mass by inhibiting signaling of myostatin, a transforming growth factor β (TGFβ) family member that negatively regulates muscle growth, prevents the development of diabetes in a mouse model of lipodystrophy. Muscle-specific myostatin inhibition also prevented hyperphagia suggesting muscle may regulate food intake".

In other words, increasing muscle mass improve your body metabolism.

* Improves Bone Mass. Dr. Colletti LAand colleagues said, "additional evidence that muscle-building exercise is associated with increases in BMD at weight-bearing sites but not at on weight-bearing sites".

* Reduces fat accumulation. Dr. Silva TR, the lead scientist wrote, "Skeletal muscle mass index (SMI) was positively correlated with physical activity (r = 0.205, P = 0.038) and protein intake (r = 0.334, P = 0.001), and negatively correlated with waist circumference (r = -0.505, P < 0.001) and %body fat (r = 0.808, P < 0.001)".

Ashwagandha also is known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, Middle East, and the Mediterranean. The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered as anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.

On finding a potent anti-aging compound, researchers examined the effects of ashwagandha root extract on muscle mass and strength in healthy young men engaged in resistance training.

The randomized, prospective, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical study included 57 young male subjects (18-50 years old) with little experience in resistance training randomized into treatment received 300 mg of ashwagandha root extract twice daily, (29 subjects) and placebo, consumed starch placebos (28 subjects) groups.

Besides baseline measurements, both groups also underwent resistance training for 8 weeks with measurements repeated at the end of week 8.

Based on the results of measurement of the participants in both groups, compared to placebo, the treatment group showed significantly greater increases i
* In muscle strength on the bench-press exercise (Placebo: 26.4 kg vs. Ashwagandha: 46.0 kg)

*  In the leg-extension exercise (Placebo: 9.8 kg) vs. Ashwagandha: 14.5 kg)

* In muscle size increase at the arms (Placebo: 5.3 cm(2) vs. Ashwagandha: 8.6 cm(2))

* In chest (Placebo: 1.4 cm vs. Ashwagandha: 3.3 cm).

Furthermore, ashwagandha treated group also had a significantly greater reduction of exercise-induced muscle damage.

Moreover,  Ashwagandha treated group also showed a significantly greater increase in testosterone level (Placebo: 18.0 ng/dL Ashwagandha: 96.2 ng/dL)

More importantly, there was a significantly greater decrease in body fat percentage in treament group compared to placebo (Placebo: 1.5% vs. Ashwagandha: 3.5%).

Based on the finding, researchers wrote, "ashwagandha supplementation is associated with significant increases in muscle mass and strength and suggests that ashwagandha supplementation may be useful in conjunction with a resistance training program".

Taken altogether, Ashwagandha may be used as a supplement for the improvement of muscle mass and strength in the resistance training program, pending to the results from the large sample size and multicenter study
