Alternative Therapy: Yoga Therapy In Improved Sexual Function in Women

Yoga therapy may be considered as an integrated form of exercise in improved women sexual dysfunction, a renowned institute study suggested.

According to the study of 40 females (age range 22-55 years, average age 34.7 +/- 8.49 years) enrolled in a yoga camp and given a standardized questionnaire named Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) before and after the 12 weeks session of yoga indicated that
1. Yoga intervention demonstrated substantially improved sexual functions scores in all six domains of FSFI assay (i.e., desire, arousal, lubrication, orgasm, satisfaction, and pain).
2. Also in this group, The improvement was more in older women (age > 45 years) in compared with younger women (age < 45 years)

Interestingly, in support of the above differentiation, researchers at the The Catholic University of Korea, conduced a randomized, controlled study of 41 women with metabolic syndrome (age 30-60 years) assigned to a 12-week yoga exercise group (n=20) or a wait-listed control group (n=21) suggested that
1. Yoga therapy displayed a significant improvement in arousal and lubrication in compared to the control group.
2. Yoga also showed an improvement of systolic blood pressure yoga group than in the control group at the 12-week follow up

Additionally, in the study of 60 Iranian women with multiple sclerosis (MS) placed in two equally divided control and case groups through random selection to assess pre-and post-effects of yoga exercises on their physical activities and sexual satisfaction levels, researchers at the joint study led by the Yasuj University of Medical Sciences, found that
1. Women participated into yoga class expressed a significant statistical difference in physical activity and sexual satisfaction levels in compared to control

Taking altogether, Yoga intervention may be considered as an integrated forms of therapy used combined with standard treatment in improved sexual function in women, particularly in women with metabolic syndrome and multiple sclerosis.

Coffee intake daily and regularly may have a potential effect in improved insulin resistance, thus reducing risk of early onset of diabetes, a university study proposed.

Insulin resistance is a condition characterized by lowered level of insulin  response to level of glucose (sugar) in the body.

Coffee, becoming a popular and social beverage all over the world, particularly in the West, is a drink made from roasted bean from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.


In a study of the effect of coffee against insulin resistance of Male C57BL/6N mice (N = 48) divided into six dietary groups: chow diet, HFD, HFD-supplemented with 0.1%, 0.3%, and 0.9% decaffeinated green coffee bean extract, researchers found that treatment of the minimum dose 0.3%.of green coffee bean extract showed a mostly significant effect in improved insulin levels caused by HFD- diet.

Further more, decaffeinated green coffee bean extract in the study also expressed reversely fat accumulation and insulin resistance caused by HFD diet by downregulating the genes involved in adipogenesis and inflammation in fat tissues involved insulin resistance.

Other, in the testing of bioactive substances in coffee in expression of acutely and/or chronically increase insulin secretion from β-cells and improvement of insulin sensitivity in skeletal muscle cells, measurement of insulin secretion after Insulin secretion at acute (1-h) and long-term (72-h) incubation, the bioactive substances from coffee exerted the following results
1. Bioactive compound isolated from coffee at 10(-8) and 10(-6) M acutely increased insulin secretion by 12% and 16% respectively.
2. Long-term exposure to cafestol at 10(-10) and 10(-8) M increased insulin secretion by 34% and 68%,
respectively.
3. Caffeic acid, another compound isolated from coffee also increased insulin secretion acutely and chronically.
4. Compounds showed no association to insulin secretion, included Chlorogenic acid, trigonelline, oxokahweol, and secoisolariciresinol.

In support to the above analysis, the antidiabetic effects of coffee and caffeine on high-fat-diet-induced impaired glucose tolerance in C57BL/6J mice. C57BL/6J mice fed a high-fat diet given regular drinking water (control group), or a 2.5-fold-diluted coffee or caffeine solution (200 mg/L) for 17 weeks. indicated that group treated with injection of coffee caffeine strongly improve glucose tolerance, insulin sensitivity, and hyperinsulinemia in compared with mice in the control group.

And coffee and caffeine exerted an ameliorative effect on high-fat-diet-induced impaired glucose tolerance through reduced inflammatory expression in gene and cytokins in improving insulin sensitivity.

Taking together, coffee  may have a potential capability in reduced risk of Insulin Resistance and early onset of diabetes through attenuated insulin resistance by bioactive compounds such as cafestol and caffeic aciid

Yoga intervention may have a positive effect in reduced chronic neck pain, a significant public health problem with only very few evidence-based treatment options, a university study suggested.

In the study of total of 51 patients (mean age 47.8 y ; 82.4% female) randomized to yoga (n=25) and exercise (n=26) intervention, with the yoga group attended a 9-week yoga course and the exercise group received a self-care manual on home-based exercises for neck pain relief, researchers found that
1. After the end of the study, yoga group expressed a significantly less neck pain intensity in compared to the exercise group
2. Yoga group also showed a less disability and better mental quality of life
3. The same group also experienced improvement of motion and the pressure pain threshold.

Dr. Cramer H, the led author said, "Yoga was more effective in relieving chronic nonspecific neck pain than a home-based exercise program" and "yoga seems to influence the functional status of neckmuscles, as indicated by improvement of physiological measures of neck pain."

Additionally, in the study of 51 patients with chronic nonspecific neck pain (mean age 47.8 years; 82.4% female) assigned to 9-week yoga group intervention, researchers at the University of Duisburg-Essen, filed the following reports at 12-month follow-up, in patients expressed
1. Pain intensity decreased from 48.81 to 32.31 ,
2. Neck-related disability decreased from 25.26  to 19.49 and
3. Body pain in the SF-36((short-form 36 questionnaire) improved from 49.37  to 59.26

2. Improved neck-related disability and bodily pain depends on regular yoga practice during the past 12 months

According to the returned questionnaire, 68% of patient reported that yoga intervention may have some positive effects in their health.

More importantly, In a pilot randomized controlled clinical trial of 72 patients randomized to a 9-week Iyengar yoga program with weekly 90-minute classes (n = 38) or to a self-care/exercise program (n = 38) with patients examined at baseline and after 4 and 10 weeks, researchers filed the following reports
1. Mean pain at rest was reduced from 44.3 to 13.0 at week 10 in yoga group
2. Pain at motion was reduced from 53.4 to 22.4 at week 10, in compared to the interval of 49.4 to 39.9 in self-care/exercise froup
3. Yoga intervention also showed significant treatment effects pain-related apprehension, disability, QOL, and psychological outcomes.
4 Yoga intervention was safe or well tolerated

After taking into account of other risk factors, the study postulated that yoga appears to be an effective treatment in chronic neck pain with possibly additional effects on psychological well-being and QOL.

Taking altogether, there is no doubt that yoga therapy may have a potential effect in reduced chronic neck pain as well as improving psychological well-being and quality of life, but sustained yoga practice seems to be the most important predictor of long-term effectiveness.

Coffee, a popular and social beverage all over the world, particularly in the West, is a drink made from roasted bean from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.

In the review literature from the electronic databases (MEDLINE, Embase, and CINAHL) from January 1966 through December 2011, including five independent prospective studies of coffee consumption and heart failure risk, including 6522 heart failure events and 140 220 participants satisfied the a standardized protocol, researchers found that coffee consumption displayed a statistically significant J-shaped relationship between coffee and heart failure.

The most effective serving of coffee in reduced risk of heart failure incidence was 4 servings/day.
but risk of heart failure increased substantially for people drinking more than 4 cups daily and regularly.

Furthermore, other factors such as sex or by baseline history of myocardial infarction or diabetes showed insignificant risk to heart failure developing.

Dr. Mostofsky E, the lead author said, "Moderate coffee consumption is inversely associated with risk of heart failure, with the largest inverse association observed for consumption of 4 servings per day".

Additionally, in cohorts studies, included 59,490 Finnish participants aged 25-74 years,  free of HF at baseline, risk of HF associated with the amount of coffee consumption daily (0, 1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-9 and ≥10 cups) were 1.00, 0.9, 0.88, 0.91, 0.96 and 1.02 for men and 1.00, 0.73, 0.77, 0.68, 0.80 and 0.88 for women, respectively.

The result indicated a strong correlation between coffee intake daily and regularly in ameliorated risk of heart failure in women,and coffee consumption was not associated to increase the risk of HF in men. regardless to other independent factors such as age, smoking status, alcohol consumption, history of type 2 diabetes mellitus and body mass index.

Promisingly, according to the meta-analyses of recent well-controlled prospective epidemiologic studies, conducted by the National University of Singapore and National University Health System, coffee-consumption associated with a lower risk of heart failure and for most healthypeople, moderate coffee consumption is unlikely to adversely affect cardiovascular health.

Taking altogether, Moderated intake of coffee may have a profound effect in attenuated risk of heart failure, particularly in women, after taking into account of other factors.

Contrastively, in the searching of database from Medline/PubMed, Scopus, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, PsycINFO, CAM-Quest, CAMbase, and IndMED through March 2014, for studies involved the efficacy and safety of yoga in patients with multiple sclerosis including health-related quality of life, fatigue, and/or mobility with mood, cognitive function, and safety were defined as secondary outcome measures, researchers at the University of Duisburg-Essen reported the following result, in 7 studies met the criteria and guidelines
1. Patients participated in yoga class short terms demonstrated a significantly improved effect in fatigue and mood change.
2. Short term yoga innervation do not improved health-related quality of life, muscle function, or cognitive function
3. Yoga therapy is safe and was not associated with serious adverse event in this group of patients

After taking into account of other risk factors, Dr. Cramer H,  the led author said, " since no methodological sound evidence was found, no recommendation can be made regarding yoga as a routine intervention for patients with multiple sclerosis. Yoga might be considered a treatment option for patients who are not adherent to recommended exercise regimens".

The information collected did not agree that yoga intervention short term can improve some symptoms and quality of life in patients with MS, therefore, a large sample size and cohost studies are necessary to clarify these contradictory results.
