Food Therapy: Garlic, The Best anti Colorectal Cancer in Whole food medicine

Whole food(herbal medicine), linking health benefits in the prevention, management, and treatment of diseases has placed an important role in human history over many centuries. The finding of whole food medication by renowned scientists all over the world to replace the single ingredient of Western medicine with little or no side effect has been difficult due to no commercial benefit and patent right to producers.

Garlic (Allium sativum) is a species in the onion genus, belonging to family Amaryllidaceae, native to central Asia. It has been used popularly in traditional and Chinese medicine in treating common cold and flu to the Plague, blood pressure cholesterol levels, natural antibiotic, etc.

Bowel cancer also known as colorectal cancer, is defined as a condition of the abnormal proliferation of cells in the colon, rectum, or vermiform appendix. Bowel cancer is relatively very common and slowly growing and progressing cancer and in a predictable way.
Bowel cancer is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer in developed countries, including the US and Canada.

Allicin (diallyl thiosulfinate) is the best-known biologically active component in freshly crushed garlic, found to reduce risk colon cancer through inhibited cancer cell lines HCT-116, LS174T, HT-29, and Caco-2, according to the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

In the study of garlic phytochemical compounds such as S-allylmercaptocysteine, diallyl disulfide, and S-trityl-L-cysteine, research also found that the chemical ingredients isolated from garlic inhibited colon cancer cell (SW620 and HCT116) growth followed by induction of apoptosis in a dose-dependent manner.

In Vitro, intake of garlic and its lipid-based extracts, induced cell cycle arrest, through a fourfold increase in caspase activity (apoptosis) in PC-3 cells when treated at a dose of 0.5 or 1 μg/m and may consider being potential as promising anticancer agents, including colon cancer.

Dr. Baena R and Dr, Salinas P said, " Dietary factors and lifestyle may contribute to the increasing colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence... Fish consumption may decrease CRC risk by 12% whereas garlic intake is not significantly associated with reduced CRC risk".

In fact, diet represents 30-35% of risk factors that contribute to the onset of cancer, adding garlic in your diet is associated to reduce the risk of various cancers, including Colorectal Cancer, together with the reduction of from meat intake influenced by both total intake and its frequency.

Food Therapy: Garlic - The Whole Food Medicine for Antiplatelet Aggregation

Kyle J. Norton, Master of Nutrition

Whole food(herbal medicine), linking health benefits in the prevention, management, and treatment of diseases has placed an important role in human history over many centuries. The finding of whole food medication by renowned scientists all over the world to replace the single ingredient of Western medicine with little or no side effect has been difficult due to no commercial benefit and pattern right to producers.

Several sulfur-containing compounds, isolated from garlic may be very effective in inhibition of platelet aggregation, a recent study suggested.

Antiplatelet activity is the effect of decreased platelet aggregation and inhibited thrombus formation.

According to the Ochanomizu University, sulfur-containing compounds in garlic not only inhibited arachidonic acid metabolism but also suppressed aggregation in association with the function of the platelet plasma membrane.

In vitro, garlic mechanisms of action may be comparable to that of the clinically used drug clopidogrel, as the herb exerts antiaggregatory effects. Garlic extracts are acting by inhibition of the ADP pathway, an important physiological agonist of normal hemostasis and thrombosis.

Dr. MacDonald JA lead of researcher said, " The ability of an aromatic disulfide to inhibit platelet aggregation can be enhanced by appending an electron-withdrawing group to the aromatic ring. The results presented establish that the aromatic thiosulfonate is a very effective inhibitor of platelet aggregation"

Beside the sulfur compound, Ajoene, (E,Z)-4,5,9-trithiadodeca-1,6,11-triene 9-oxide, isolated from alcoholic extracts of garlic reversibly inhibited platelet aggregation through platelet deposition on severely damaged vessel wall but not affected platelet adhesion.

In fact, in the comparison of the effect of the Garlic Pill with Plavix on Platelet Aggregation and Bleeding Time, groups treated with 1200 or 2400 mg garlic inhibited platelet aggregation substantially, through an increased time of bleeding.

The use of garlic supplement should be taken with care for patients who are taking Anticoagulant as garlic may increase the risk of bleeding. Also, patients with an ulcer should consult with their doctors.

Herbal Therapy: Cat's claw, The best Whole Herb Medicine for Prevention and Treatment of Inflammatory diseases

Kyle J. Norton, Master of Nutrients

Cat's claw found in the tropical jungles of South and Central America, is a genus Uncaria, belonging to the family Rubiaceae, used in traditional medicine over two thousand years as a tonic, contraceptive, anti-inflammatory and infectious agent, and to treat diarrhea, rheumatic disorders, acne, diabetes, cancer and diseases of the urinary tract, etc..

The chemical constituents of Cat's claw include ajmalicine, akuammigine, campesterol, catechin, carboxyl alkyl esters, chlorogenic acid, cinchonain, corynantheine, corynoxeine, daucosterol, epicatechin, harman, hirsuteine, hirsutine, iso-pteropodine, etc.

Inflammatory diseases is disorders and conditions caused by inflammation. Cat's claw may be a next generation of the medical plant for treatment of inflammation against various diseases. According to the study by the Case Western Reserve University, Uncaria tomentosa exhibited high levels of anti-inflammatory effects through the interference of the pro-inflammatory expression.

Mitraphylline (MTP), the major pentacyclic oxindole alkaloid presented in Uncaria tomentosa, elicited an anti-inflammatory response that modulates neutrophil activation contributing to the attenuation of inflammatory episodes.

Furthermore, the ingredient, Mitraphylline (MTP) also showed a direct effect in the immune system by reduced almost 40% of the production of interleukin 4 (IL-4) and inhibited around 50% of the release of interleukins.

Indenture Stomatitis, a chronic oral disease that affects denture wearers is caused by Candida Albicans in inducing inflammation. Topical application of a gel of 2% U. tomentosa three times a day for 1 week, cat' claw significantly reduced signs of the disease, after 1 week of treatment.

In fact, the anti-inflammatory properties may also result from their ability to inhibit TNF-alpha, a central regulator of inflammation, and to a lesser production of PGE2, a principal mediator of inflammation in diseases production.

The effects of cat's claw in inhibited inflammatory diseases may result from its binding to proinflammatory cytokines and pathways. Use of the medical plant should be only prescribed by herbal for safety purpose.

Diabetes is defined as a condition caused by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate the glucose. It is either caused by cells in pancreas dying off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol. In some cases, diabetes is also caused by allergic reactions of cells in the immune system.

The effectiveness of chickpea in reduced risk of type II diabetes, probably due to the existence of high amount of dietary fiber. According to the Case Western Reserve University, increased consumption of soluble and insoluble fiber is associated with improved glucose metabolism in both diabetic and nondiabetic individuals.

People who follow high-fiber, high-carbohydrate diets over time, can see the benefits in controlling body weight, insulin requirements, glycemic control, and serum lipids up to 10 years of follow-up.

In the review of 14 randomized clinical trials, Dr. Wolfram T and research team found that addition of insoluble or soluble fiber to meals, increased consumption of diets rich in whole grains and vegetables, and vegan diets improve glucose metabolism and increase insulin sensitivity. The greatest improvement in blood lipids, body weight, and hemoglobin A(1c) level occurred in participants following low-fat, plant-based diets.

In fact, " High-fiber diets, especially of the soluble variety, and soluble fiber supplements may offer some improvement in carbohydrate metabolism, lower total cholesterol, and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and have other beneficial effects in patients with non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM)", Dr. Vinik AI and Dr. Jenkins DJ said.

Furthermore, The American Diabetes Association recommends a goal of 40 g of soluble fiber intake per day for a patient with diabetes.

Taking all together, chickpea with a high amount of dietary fiber may be considered as a functional food in reduced symptoms and complications of patients with diabetes.

Breast cancer (malignant breast neoplasm) is a cancer that starts in the tissues of the breast either from the inner lining of milk ducts (Ductal carcinoma) or the lobules (Lobular carcinoma) that supply the ducts with milk. there is also rare cases that breast cancer starts in other areas of the breast. In 2010, over 250,000 new cases of breast cancer were expected to be diagnosed in women in the U.S. alone and the risk of getting invasive breast cancer during life time of a women is 1/8.

Fresh Garlic Extract beside inhibited colon and gastric cancer in 2 previous article, it also is found to arrest the growth and alter the morphology of MCF7 breast cancer cells.

Also in MCF7 human breast cancer cells, garlic constituent diallyl trisulfide have highly effective antitumor effects by the suppressesing viability of cultured MCF-7 and MCF-12a cells, through decreased the percent of cells in G(2)/M and induced apoptotic cell death.

According to the study by the 201 South University Street, diallyl trisulfide, inhibited the expression of MDA-MB-231 and MCF-7 breast cancer cells, regardless to the state of estrogen in the tumors.

In a total of in 285 women (aged 25-65 years old) newly diagnosed with histopathologically confirmed breast cancer, dietary Allium Vegetables has a negative association between the consumption of raw onion and risk of breast cancer.

Dr. Roy N., the lead author at the Kerala Agricultural University, said, "Docking studies and ADMET evaluation revealed twelve compounds (isolated from garlic) to be active against the targets(breast caner cell lines). All the compounds displayed highly negative dock scores which indicated good interactions".

Therefore, the effectiveness of garlic in reduced risk and treatment of breast cancer is probably due to existence of many phytochemicals found in the herb. Women who increased intake of garlic everyday, may see the risk of breast cancer reduced substantially.

Herbal Therapy: Cinnamon, the number One Whole Herb Medicine in management of diabetes and its complications

Kyle J. Norton, Master of Nutrients

Intake of cinnamon is found to improve fasting glucose, glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity in women with insulin resistance associated with the polycystic ovary syndrome.

Cinnamon is a spice derived from the inner bark of tree, native to South East Asia, of over 300 species of the genus Cinnamomum, belonging to the familyLauraceae, use in herbal and traditional medicine as anti-fungal and bacteria level, to improve reproductive organ, prevent flatulence and intestinal cramping, and to treat indigestion, diarrhea, bad breath, headache, migraine, etc.

Cinnamaldehyde, in the animal study found in the husk of Cicer arietinum L. Monosaccharide, exhibited antioxidant effects in reduced 29% of free radical expression and glucolipid levels through its action on multiple signaling pathways including cell cycle arrest and anti pro inflammatory property.

In vivo and in vitro, administered orally cinnamic acid and cinnamaldehyde lower acute blood glucose and improve glucose tolerance, through stimulating insulin secretion in isolated islets, according to the joint study led by the University of Karachi.

In a 16-week double-blind randomized control trial of 116 individuals with metabolic syndrome, dietary intervention groups with the administration of cinnamon [6 capsules (3 g) daily], significant improve all components of metabolic syndrome in a sample of Asian Indians in north India.

Dr. Gupta Jain S lead author of the researchers said,"Significantly greater decrease [difference between means, (95% CI)] in fasting blood glucose (mmol/L) [0.3 (0.2, 0.5) p = 0.001], glycosylated haemoglobin (mmol/mol) [2.6 (0.4, 4.9) p = 0.023], waist circumference (cm) [4.8 (1.9, 7.7) p = 0.002] and body mass index (kg/m2 ) [1.3 (0.9, 1.5) p = 0.001] was observed in the cinnamon group compared to placebo group".

Other researchers in the study of cinnamon (Cinnamomum cassia) anti-diabetic property on obese patients also suggested, its effectiveness of increased the lipid storage capacity of white adipocytes and increased the fatty acid oxidation capacity may be due to activities of some other components of cinnamon (Cinnamomum cassia) in the prevention of  obesity-induced type II diabetes

Although cinnamon (Cinnamomum sp) has shown to express good glycemic control to patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), intake of cinnamon supplement and whole herb should only be given by the qualified herbal doctor to achieve a greater health effect without side effects.

According to traditional Chinese medicine, cinnamon is a very hot herb, overdoses may induce toxicity.
