Cruciferous Vegetables Protect the Stomach Against Stomach Cancer

By Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is a class of chronic diseases associated with irregular cell growth in the tissues of the affected organ.

The stomach located between the esophagus and the small intestine is a muscular, hollow, and important organ of the digestive tract.

The stomach plays a critical role to assist the digestive system in digesting foods by secreting acid and enzymes.

Stomach cancer is a condition of abnormal growth of the mucus-producing cells of the inside lining of the stomach. Adenocarcinoma is the most common type of stomach cancer.

Most patients with stomach cancer in the early stage are asymptomatic.

However, at the later stage, patients may experience symptoms of pain and/or discomfort in the stomach area, mild ache in the upper part of the body, difficulty swallowing, feeling full or bloated after a small mealy, and vomiting blood or having blood in the stool accompanied by general symptoms shared by other types of cancer, including unintentional weight loss, loss of energy, tiredness, nausea, and vomiting and loss of appetite.

According to the statistics, most cases of gastric/stomach cancer are found in older people. The average age of people when they are diagnosed is 68. The risk of developing gastric/stomach cancer in a man lifetime is about 1 in 95.

Localized stomach cancer has a 5-year survival rate of 68%. However, If cancer has spread to surrounding tissues or organs and/or the regional lymph nodes, the 5-year survival rate is 31%.

Cruciferous vegetables are a group of vegetables, belongings to the family Brassicaceae (also called Cruciferae) with many genera, species, and cultivated all over the world in suitable climate for commercial profits, including cauliflower, cabbage, kale, garden cress, bok choy, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and green leafy vegetables.

On finding potential and natural foods for the prevention and treatment of cancer, researchers investigated the risk of regular cruciferous vegetable intake on stomach cancer.

The hospital-based, case-control study conducted at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center in Buffalo, NY, included 292 stomach cancer patients and 1168 cancer-free controls recruited between 1992 and 1998 as part of the Patient Epidemiology Data System (PEDS).

According to the dietary and other epidemiologic and confounding variables collected by the questionnaire, there were strong inverse associations between stomach cancer and the highest versus lowest intakes of total cruciferous vegetables with the odds ratio (OR) of 0.59.

In the comparison test assay, raw cruciferous vegetables have an OR = 0.53, compared to raw broccoli with an OR = 0.61, raw cauliflower with an OR = 0.51, and Brussels sprouts with an OR = 0.66.

Increased portions of total cruciferous vegetable intake are associated linearly to a reduced risk of stomach cancer.

After taking other factors into account, researchers wrote, "These data suggest that consuming raw cruciferous vegetables may be associated with a lower odds of stomach cancer, even after considering other dietary characteristics".

Taken altogether, dietary cruciferous vegetables may be considered functional remedies for the prevention of stomach cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Tocopherols Promote Cytotoxic Activity Against Cancer Cells

By Kyle J. Norton

Cytotoxicity is the process that induces cell death through toxins.

In other words, cell cytotoxicity is the process to use certain chemicals or mediator cells to destroy the living cells.

In normal, cytotoxicity can cause the death of healthy cells

In cancers, cytotoxicity can be beneficial to humans by destroying the cancer cells and preventing them from proliferation.

For example, cytotoxicity induced by oxidative stress due to the imbalanced ratio of free radicals and antioxidant enzymes produced by the body can cause protein, lipid, and cellular damage that leads to chronic low-grade inflammatory diseases and cancer.

However, stimulation of ROS expression to induce cytotoxicity to the tumors can also cause cancer cell death without damage to nearby healthy cells.

Scientifically, most cases of cancer cell cytotoxicity are associated with the stimulation of protein and pathways involved in either gene suppression or cell death programming.

Chemotherapy is a type of cancer treatment that uses one or more toxic chemicals to kill cancer cells.

Chemotherapeutic cytotoxicity is the process that interferes with cell division (mitosis) through cell cycle arrest to include apoptosis.

Tocopherols are phytochemicals of which many have vitamin E activity, belonging to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in butter, egg yolk, milk fat, some vegetable, and seed or nut oils, etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of cancer researchers examined protective effects of α- and γ-tocopherols and α- and γ-tocotrienols on the oxidative stress induced by LPS on human lung carcinoma A549 cells.

Application of α- and γ-tocopherols and α- and γ-tocotrienols showed strong suppression of the intracellular reactive oxygen formation, lipid peroxidation, and induction of inflammatory mediator cytokines, and cell death.

More precisely, the application of tocopherols incorporated into cultured cells could suppress LPS-induced oxidative stress at much lower intracellular concentration than tocotrienols compared to the much slower tocotrienols.

In other words, tocopherols demonstrated the strongest cytotoxicity against the tested cancer cells compared to that of tocotrienols.

Collectively, researchers wrote, "α-tocopherol may exhibit the highest protective capacity among the vitamin E isoforms against LPS-induced oxidative stress".

Taken altogether, tocopherols may process cytotoxicity against the onset of cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of tocopherols in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Antioxidant Alliin Isolated From Garlic May Processes Immunomodulatory Effects

By Kyle J. Norton

The immunomodulatory effect is an action in which the immune function is modulated to the needs of the body.

The immune system included the thymus and bone marrow, as well as secondary lymphatic tissues including the spleen, tonsils, lymph vessels, lymph nodes, adenoids, skin, and liver, which is the body's defense against infectious organisms and foreign invaders.

In the acute phase of infection, the immune macrophages, the first line of defense stimulate the production of a blood palette to cover the wound or injury and pro-inflammatory cytokines to the site of infection to kill off pathogens before they can enter the body to multiply.

Most cases of infection are stopped at the acute phase, depending on the size and penetration of the wound.

However, if the immune system for whatever reason such as in people with a weakened immune system can not destroy the foreign invaders in the set period of time (3-8 weeks), it will adapt to the new change, leading to chronic low-grade inflammation.

Low-grade inflammation over time has been found to destroy cells and tissues in the affected area or organ, inducing chronic inflammatory disease, including diabetes, arthritis, and cardiovascular disease.

Out of many low-grade inflammatory risk factors, some researchers suggested that an unhealthy diet may be one of the major culprits involved in facilitating the onset of the diseases.

Dr. Casas R, Sacanella E, the lead scientist wrote, "Dietary patterns high in refined starches, sugar, and saturated and trans-fatty acids, poor in natural antioxidants and fiber from fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and poor in omega-3 fatty acids may cause an activation of the innate immune system, most likely by excessive production of proinflammatory cytokines associated with a reduced production of anti-inflammatory cytokines".

In other words, if you follow the diet pattern of a high-fat diet, you are at a higher risk of low-grade inflammatory disease, compared to those who follow the diet pattern of the Mediterranean diet.

Alliin (S-allyl-L-cysteine-S-oxide) is a phytochemical compound sulfoxide,. a derivative of the amino acid cysteine, belongings to the class of sulfur compounds, found abundantly in fresh garlic and onion.

With an aim to find a natural ingredient with immunomodulatory activity, researchers examined the effect of the garlic derivative alliin, on mitogen-induced peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) proliferation and cytokine production in vitro.

Before being treated with garlic derivative alliin, pokeweed mitogen (PWM) injection induced cell proliferation, production of proinflammatory cytokines, including IL-1beta and TNF-alpha.

Furthermore, the pokeweed mitogen (PWM) treated group also showed reduced levels of both percentage of phagocyting cells and the number of latex particles associated with the immune functions of phagocytosis.

Administration of garlic derivative alliin not only decreased the production of proinflammatory cytokines induced by pokeweed mitogen (PWM) but also improved the levels of antioxidant enzymes.

In other words, alliin exerted an immunomodulatory effect on the peripheral blood cells in vitro.

In order to reveal more information of alliin effect on the immune system, researchers investigated whether different plant-derived components with similar anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory function such as quercetin and alliin in traditional Asian diet consumed in an alternate style cooperatively affect health including the growth of host and the status of the gut microbiota and colonic epithelial immunity.

Compared to the traditional Asian diet significantly increased the rat body weight and reshaped the gut microbiota composition by significantly increasing the relative abundance of fecal Firmicutes and Cyanobacteria but decreased that of Bacteroidetes (P < 0.05) and increased the relative abundance of Candidatus Arthromitus, Lactococcus, Geobacillus, and Ruminococcus at the genus level that benefits the host's health, the consumption of quercetin and alliin also altered 13 genes expression involved in the KEGG pathways of complement and coagulation cascades and hematopoietic cell lineage to improve the gut immunity.

In other words, the alternate consumption of quercetin and alliin can contribute beneficial metabolic effects by optimizing gut microbiota and altering the immunologic function of colonic epithelial cells.

Taken altogether, alliin may be considered supplements for the immune-modulatory activity depending on the body needs, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of alliin in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Cruciferous vegetables Kill Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer in Vitro

By Kyle J. Norton

The lung is a vital organ of the human being, located near the backbone on either side of the heart with functions of inhaling oxygen from the air then transporting them to the bloodstream to nourish the body cells' needs and exhaling carbon dioxide from the bloodstream.

Cancer is a class of disease characterized by cell growth disorderly and uncontrollably in the tissues and organs.

Lung cancer is a medical condition characterized by abnormal growth of the cells in the lung's tissue.

The most common form of primary lung cancers is derived from epithelial cells.

According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, in the US, lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths.

In 2007, lung cancer causes the death of 158,683 people, including 88,329 men and 70,354 women.

In other words, 1 in 16 people in the US will be diagnosed with lung cancer in their lifetime. Approximately over 220,000 people in the US will be diagnosed with lung cancer this year.

Believe it or not, 60% to 65% of all new lung cancer diagnosed are among people who have never smoked or are former smokers.

Non-small cell lung cancer, the most common type of lung cancer, usually grows and spreads methodically and predictably.

The most common risk factors of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) are long term smoking and people exposed to long-term second-hand smoke.

The most common symptoms of lung cancer are shortness of breath, cough up blood, pain, fluid in the chest, wheezing and hoarseness accompanied by general symptoms shared by other types of cancer.

On finding a potential compound for the prevention and treatment of cancer, researchers examined
the effect of the combination of two isothiocyanates, i.e. allyl isothiocyanate and sulforaphane on A549 lung cancer cells.

According to the results of the experiment, the combination treatment worked synergistically to induce stronger growth inhibition of the cancer cells compared to the singular treatment.

The combination treatment caused cell cycle arrest, suppressed cell migration and apoptosis compared to a singular treatment by modifying the expression of key proteins associated with the cellular processes.

Most importantly, the combined treatment also exhibited the expression of ROS to induce the cytotoxic activity against the tested cell line.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "our results have demonstrated the potential of different isothiocyanates used in combination to produce enhanced protective effects against carcinogenesis".

Taken altogether, cruciferous vegetables processed a high amount of allyl isothiocyanate and sulforaphane may be considered functional foods for the prevention of non-small cell lung cancer pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Healthy Food Potatoes (Solanum) May Process Antibacterial Activities

By Kyle J. Norton

Infectious diseases are a class of conditions caused by the invasion of pathogenic microorganisms, such as bacteria, viruses, parasites, or fungi.

Bacteria is a type of biological cell consisting of a single cell with a simple internal structure.

Out of millions of bacteria present in this world, only a hundred of them cause infectious diseases. And, most bacteria that cause large-scale disease in human history may be closed to extinction.

In contrast to general belief, most bacteria live as independent cells, they share the basic characteristics of all living things, they breathe, metabolize, produce waste, and maintain a membrane potential.

However, bacteria do not process a nucleus in which their DNA is separated from the rest of the cell.

In the differentiation of bacteria, one must know that not all bacteria are bad. Some bacteria found in the digestive tract have been found to aid digestion and prevent the imbalance of bad and good bacteria. In other words, most bacteria are harmless.

The most common diseases caused by bacteria include strep throat, urinary tract infections, and tuberculosis.

Infection occurs when the bacteria successfully invade the body and start to multiply. Most cases of infectious diseases caused by bacteria are treated with antibiotics.

And, most cases of infectious disease are transmitted by airborne you can get sick if you breathe into the air that carries infectious bacteria in air particles, vector-borne if you are stunk by the insect that the bacteria and vehicle-borne if you are eating food or carrying the materials contaminated by the bacteria.

Potato is a genus Solanum, which belongs to the family Solanaceae. It is a good source of protein and according to the statistic, the annual diet of an average global citizen is about 33 kg (72.6 Lbs) of potato. It now is growing worldwide in a suitable climate for commercial profits and health benefits, thus its consumption is extremely variable and rapidly changing.

On finding a potential plant that processes anti-infectious properties, researchers evaluated the antibacterial and cytotoxic activity of a new experimental tooth based on Solanum tuberosum "Tocosh" on the cell lines 3T3 and DU145.

According to the tested analysis* Solanum tuberosum (toosh) was not cytotoxic because it only had one CC50 at the concentration of 0.26927 mg/mL and 0.26845 mg/mL for the cell lines 3T3 and DU145, respectively.

* However, tocosh toothpaste (TD) has an antibacterial effect against S. aureus and S. mutans.

In other words, Solanum tuberosum showed no effects to induce cell death in the tested cancer cell lines but exerted a strong activity against certain oral bacterial strains.

Collectively, researchers said, "This research has great potential for clinical use because this new dentifrice has antimicrobial activity against different oral germs".

Taken altogether, potatoes may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Beta-Sitosterol Protects the Liver Against Liver Toxicity

By Kyle J. Norton

The liver is the largest internal organ found in the human which plays an essential role in filtering the blood from the digestive system before passing them to other parts of the body.

The liver also produces cholesterol, a waxy substance which aids digestion, builds cell membranes, and produces vitamin D and steroid hormones.

If the liver was damaged due to toxicity, the blood will be toxic, affecting the function of all organs and tissues in the body.

Epidemiological studies suggested liver dysfunction can also induce acute kidney injury (AKI), chronic kidney disease, linked to increased mortality, extending to those with chronic liver disease.

Liver disease is a class of medical conditions characterized by reducing partly or completely the function of the liver, including liver failure.

Hepatotoxicity is a condition caused by the accumulation of toxins in the liver, leading to liver dysfunction or reduced liver function.

Acute liver toxicity is caused by short-term exposure to toxic chemicals such as an overdose of medication.

Chronic liver toxicity is due to long-term exposure to toxic substances including excessive alcohol drinking and long-term use of certain medicines.

There are many causes associated with liver toxicity including chemical toxins, which normally induce acute liver toxicity, such as those used in laboratories and industries, natural chemicals, and long-term use of certain medication.

The most common signs and symptoms of liver toxicity include jaundice, abdominal pain, gastrointestinal discomforts, fatigue, Stomach pain. Nausea (upset stomach) Unusual tiredness. dark-colored urine, and pale-colored bowel movements.

Beta-Sitosterol is a phytochemical in the class of phytosterols, belongings to the group of lipids, found abundantly in avocados, rice bran, wheat germ, corn oils, fennel, peanuts, soybeans, hawthorn, basil, buckwheat. etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the prevention and treatment of liver diseases, researchers examined the pharmacological efficacy of the seed extracts, constituents of the seeds including unsaturated fatty acids linolenic and linoleic acids, and the sterol beta-sitosterol in the 70% EtOH and the MeOH extracts.

According to the chemical analysis, in rat experiment, the seed extracts orally administered attenuated the dimethylnitrosamine-induced hepatopathy, and blood L-aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and L-alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels, liver retinoid level, and hydroxyproline level.

From the liver perspective, the extracts decreased the levels of AST, ALT, and hydroxyproline levels involved in liver oxidative stress and the rate of liver fibrosis rates.

Hepatopathic rats treated with 70% EtOH and MeOH extracts of the seed showed a higher retinoid level compared to water-treated control rats.

Based on the findings researchers suggested, " the positive effect on liver function of the extracts varies depending on the extracting solvent used. 70% EtOH and MeOH extract of the seeds inhibited the development of liver fibrosis in hepatopathy rats, thus exhibiting potent improvement".

And, " The unsaturated linolenic and linoleic acids and the sterol beta-sitosterol contained in these extracts may also contribute to the improvement of liver function".

Taken altogether, beta-Sitosterol may be considered a supplement for the prevention of liver toxicity pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of beta-Sitosterol in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Broccoli Inhibits the Parameters Associated with Onset of Liver Cancer in Vivo

By Kyle J. Norton

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a chronic condition caused by fat accumulated in the liver over time, in the absence of excessive alcohol use.

The disease can be classified into the types of non-inflammatory fatty liver (NAFL) and inflammatory nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH).

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is one of the major causes of cirrhosis and liver cancer

The liver is the largest internal organ located in the upper right portion of the abdomen, beneath your diaphragm and above your stomach.

The liver not only plays a critical role to filter the blood coming from the intestine before passing them to other parts of the body but also protects our body against toxin by detoxifying chemicals and metabolizes drugs.

Furthermore, the liver produces bile that not only aids the digestive function in food absorption but also builds strong cell membranes, produces vitamin D and steroid hormone.

Additionally, the liver also inhibits oxidative stress by producing the antioxidant enzyme that counters the expression of free radicals in the body

Liver cancer is a medical condition characterized by cell growth irregularly in the liver tissue.

The causes of liver cancer are associated with the alternation of cells DNA which normally begins in the cells on the surface of the inner lining.

Liver cancer at the early stage no not cause any symptoms. However, at the advanced stage, liver cancer cells can cause a wide range of symptoms including jaundice, abdominal swelling and pain, and dark urine and white stool accompanied by the general symptoms of cancers such as unintended weight loss, loss of appetite, chronic fatigue and tiredness and gastrointestinal discomforts.

The most common cause of liver cancer is infected by the hepatitis virus. However, in North America, due to overexpression of overweight and obese of the population, liver cancer may be slowly progressed from nonalcoholic fatty liver disease through cirrhosis to liver cancer.

According to the statistic, liver cancer remains the fifth most common malignancy in men and the eighth in women worldwide. In the US, approximately 42,030 new cases including 29,480 in men and 12,550 in women will be diagnosed with liver cancer. The liver cancer also will cause of 31,780 American, including 21,600 men and 10,180 women in 2019.

Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belongings to the family Brassicaceae. The veggie has large flower heads, usually green in color with a mass of flower heads surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant from the continent of Europe.

On finding a potential wholefood for the treatment of cancer, researchers examined the impact of dietary broccoli on hepatic lipid metabolism and the progression of NAFLD to HCC.

The study included adult 5-wk-old male B6C3F1 mice received a control diet (AIN-93M) or a Western diet (high in lard and sucrose, 19% and 31%, wt:wt, respectively), with or without freeze-dried broccoli (10%, wt:wt). Following week, mice were treated once per week with diethylnitrosamine (DEN; 45 mg/kg body weight intraperitoneally at ages 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, and 12 wk).

Based on the results of the experiment, mice treated by broccoli exhibited lower hepatic triglycerides (P < 0.001) and NAFLD scores (P < 0.0001), decreased liver oxidative stress markers plasma alanine aminotransferase.

Furthermore, dietary broccoli also suppressed the activation of hepatic CD68(+) macrophages and slowed initiation and progression of the hepatic neoplasm associated with the initiation of liver cancer in treated mice.

Furthermore, dietary broccoli decreased hepatic triglycerides observed by suppressing the hepatic Cd36 expression in the contribution to dyslipidemia and increasing the microsomal triglyceride transfer protein involving the secretion of very-low-density lipoproteins.

Collectively, researchers said, "Long-term consumption of whole broccoli countered both NAFLD development enhanced by a Western diet and hepatic tumorigenesis induced by DEN in male B6C3F1 mice".

Taken altogether, broccoli may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of liver cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
