Omega-3 Fatty Acids May Be Used for the Treatment of Acids Sickle Cell Anemia

By Kyle J. Norton

Anemia is a condition of deficiency of hemoglobin, leading to not enough red blood cells in the body. The function of hemoglobin is to carry oxygen from the lung to the body' s cells.

Depletion of the stored iron can cause reduced hemoglobin production, leading to iron deficiency anemia.

Iron deficiency is simply as too little iron in the body for the production of hemoglobin.

A long-term deficiency of folate and vitamin B-12 plays a critical role in the production of healthy red blood cells associated with an increased risk of Amenia.

Also, people with the mutated gene inherited from the parent are at substantial risk of the disease. The Duliajan College study suggested that certain genes have been found to induce anemia.

Anemia occurs when there isn't enough hemoglobin to transport oxygen to the body cells and organs need, leading to symptoms of irritability, fatigue, shortness of breath, low blood pressure, etc.
Approximately, 2 out of 1000 people in Canada are considered an iron deficiency.

Sickle cell anemia (SCD), a genetic preposition form of anemia is a condition associated with not enough healthy red blood cells to carry adequate oxygen throughout your body.

The red blood cells in sickle cell anemia patines are rigid and sticky with the shapes of sickles or crescent moons.

The normal red blood cells live for about 120 days compared to the sickle cells that die in 10 to 20 days. In other words, the inability of the body to replace the cell that dies rapidly with new blood cells is a cause of sickle cell anemia.

According to the statistics, provided by the CDC, approximately 100,000 Americans are living with SCD. Ethnically, 1 out of every 365 Black or African-American births, 1 out of every 16,300 Hispanic-American births and 1 in 13 Black or African-American birth are sickle cell trait (SCT) carriers.

Conventionally, except for bone marrow transplant, treatments of sickle cell anemia are to improve quality of life, by relieving symptoms and preventing complications.

Omega-3 fatty acids are phytochemicals in the class of lipids, found abundantly in deepsea fisk, dark-green leafy vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, etc.

The three main components of Omega-3 fatty acids are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of anemia, researchers examined the Lipoxygenase products of the omega-3 fatty acids (O3FAs), docosahexaenoic (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic (EPA) acids, on anti-inflammatory pain and episodes of vaso-occlusion in sickle cell anemia (SCD).

According to the results of the study included children with SCD HbSS-disease (n = 38) and age/race-matched HbAA-controls (n = 18),\
* The anti-inflammatory DHA and EPA (FA-Ratio) were increased in both phosphatidylcholine and phosphatidylethanolamine in HbSS compared to controls.

* Correlations were noted in HbSS subjects between hs-CRP and FA-Ratios (p = 0.011).

* FA-Ratios increased with age (p = 0.0007) due to an increase in pro-inflammatory AA with a concomitant decrease in anti-inflammatory DHA.

Based on the evidence, researchers said, "Findings demonstrate relative deficiencies in HbSS of the anti-inflammatory precursor fatty acids DHA and EPA, which correlates positively with hs-CRP".

Taken altogether, Omega-3 fatty acids found abundantly in fish oil and plant oil may be considered a functional food for the treatment of sickle cell anemia, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Antioxidant Gamma-linolenic Acid, the Anti-Bacterial Infection Remedy

By Kyle J. Norton

Bacteria are single-celled organisms of which only a few have been found to cause infection.

Out of trillions of strains of bacteria in the world, only a few cause diseases in humans. Believe it or not, our gut contains trillion microorganisms, most of them are bacteria.

The bacterial infection is the infection caused by bacteria. Most cases of bacterial infection are treated with antibiotics. However, bacteria are very adaptable, overuse of antibiotics has made many of them resistant to antibiotics.

Infection is a condition caused by a harmful microbial invasion of the body tissues

Most cases of bacterial infection are treated with antibiotics. However, bacterias are very adaptable, overuse of antibiotics has been found to make them resistant to antibiotics.

The most common symptoms of bacterial infection are redness and heat, swelling, fever, pain at the site of infection.

In severe cases, the patient may also experience symptoms of swollen lymph glands.

Most cases of bacterial infection are treated successfully if the types of bacteria that cause the infection are identified.

There are many risk factors associated with the onset of bacterial infection, some researchers suggested that people with a weakened immune system may increase the prevalence of bacterial infection.

Gamma-linolenic acid is a phytochemical in the group of Omega-3, 6,9 fatty acids, belongings to the class of Lipids, found abundantly in evening primrose, borage, blackcurrant, etc.

On finding a potential plant that processes anti-infectious activity researchers examined the stability of fermented feed quality and animal gut health.

According to the results of the analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequencing and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry used to explore the bacterial populations and metabolites profile in the fermented feed incubated with probiotics (MF, Lactobacillus salivarius, Bacillus subtilis, and Saccharomyces cerevisiae) or without probiotics (SF),
* The pH and lactic acid levels were higher in MF than in SF (P < 0.05), while the total volatile fatty acid content was lower (P < 0.05).

* After fermentation, the most abundant bacterial genus in MF was Enterococcus, rather than the added probiotics Lactobacillus or Bacillus. Weissella and a few potential pathogens (Enterobacter, Escherichia-Shigella, and Pantoea) were dominant in SF (P < 0.05).

* The metabolites enriched in MF, such as maleic acid, phenylacetic acid, ethyl linoleate, dihomo-gamma-linolenic acid, and L-theanine had potential antimicrobial activities

Collectively, researchers said, " the addition of probiotics enriched a few potentially beneficial microbes and small molecular compounds with antimicrobial activities, and inhibited the potential pathogens in the fermented feed.".

Taken altogether, gamma-linolenic acid may be considered antioxidants for improvement of gut microbiota, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Angelica Protects Diabetics Against Renal Damage

By Kyle J. Norton

Diabetes is a chronic condition caused by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate the glucose.

In other words, diabetes occurs when cells in the pancreas dying off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol. In some cases, diabetes is also caused by allergic reactions of cells in the immune system.

There are 2 major types of diabetes
Most common types of diabetes are
* Type 1 diabetes, also known as juvenile diabetes or insulin-dependent diabetes, the most common form diabetes found in children is a condition in which the pancreas does not produce any insulin. The most common form of type 1 diabetes is caused by genetic mutation and some viruses.

* Type 2 diabetes is a medical condition characterized by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate the glucose due to either cell in pancreas dying off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol.

The kidneys formed part of the secretary system are two bean-shaped organs located against the back muscles in the upper abdominal area.

The kidneys play a critical role in filtering wastes from the breakdown of active muscle and the food you eat and removing extra water from the blood through urinary secretion.

Furthermore, the kidneys also maintain the fluid in the body by secreting extra water through urinary secretion.

Kidney dysfunction reduces the body's ability to clean and filter extra water from your blood, leading to fluid retention and high blood pressure in the early stage. Believe it or not, people with a kidney function of 10% do not show signs of kidney dysfunction and symptoms.

In other words, kidney disease often has no symptoms until at a very advanced stage.

Diabetic kidney damage is a type of kidney injury caused by diabetes.

Kidney damage caused by diabetes usually occurs slowly, over many years. The injury can also lead to other health problems, including high blood pressure and glomerulonephritis,, an inflammation of the kidney's filtering units.

Angelica or Dang Qui is a herb of Genus Angelica from the family Apiaceae, indigenous to China.

The herb has been used as a Queen herb in traditional Chinese medicine antispasmodic and vasodilatory agent, and to balance the hormones in women for a normal menstrual cycle and menstruation and strengthen heart, spleen, kidneys, and liver for both men and women, etc. In other words, it is used to treat gynecological ailments, fatigue, mild anemia, and high blood pressure. It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, etc.

On finding a natural compound for the treatment of kidney diseases, the researchers examined the effects of an arabinoglucan (AG) isolated from Angelica Sinensis on diabetic nephropathy (DN) induced in rats by streptozotocin.

The rats intraperitoneally treated with AG for 8 weeks induced Diabetes exhibited renal dysfunction, as evidenced by reduced creatinine clearance, increased blood urea nitrogen and proteinuria, along with the marked enhanced mesangial expansion.

Overproliferation of glomerular mesangial cells (GMCs) that remove trapped residues and aggregated protein halted by AG treatment

Furthermore, AG treatment rats also inhibited the and inflammation mediators associated with inflammatory cytokines.

Moreover, AG also significantly inhibited the expression of nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) against inflammation and receptor for advanced glycation end products (RAGE) induced oxidative stress by interacting and binding to RAGE,  both in diabetic kidneys and in high glucose-induced GMCs.

Based on the findings, researchers said, " AG, acting as a RAGE antagonist, is a promising agent for the prevention and treatment of DN".

Taken altogether, Herbal Angelica may protect the diabetics kidney against DN, pending to larger sample size and multicenter human study.

By Kyle J. Norton

Human immunodeficiency virus -1 (HIV-1) is one of 2 types of HIV precipitated of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), transmitted through direct contact with HIV-infected body fluids, including blood, semen, and genital secretions,...

Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is a chronic condition caused by the infection of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

According to epidemiological studies, people who have serval sexual partners are the most at risk of HIV infection.

However, the virus can also transmit through infected blood transfusion, infected mother to children.

People in the early stage infected by the virus may experience some acute symptoms caused by the immune response, including fever sore throat, rash, muscle and joint aches and pains, headache,...

If untreated, the virus will slowly multiply and destroy the cells of the immune system, leading to chronic signs and symptoms of fever, fatigue, swollen lymph nodes,...

In the late stage, HIV-1 may severely damage the immune system, making the infected host vulnerable to a variety of life-threatening diseases and cancers. If an infected individual has the numbers of T-cell count below 200, the person is considered to have AIDs.

According to the statistic, AIDS is the fifth leading cause of death in the US.

People between ages 25 and 44 in the United States are at substantially higher risk compared to other age groups.

Approximately 36.7 million people worldwide living with HIV/AIDS in 2016, including, 2.1 million children less than 15 years of age.

Dandelion is a herbaceous perennial plant, genus Taraxacum, belongings to the family Asteraceae, native to temperate regions of the world. It has been used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat gout, eczema, acne, gall bladder, kidney, liver and urinary disorders, hypoglycemia, dyspepsia with constipation, edema, blood pressure, and heart weakness, chronic joint, skin diseases, etc.

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases, scientists examined the Taraxacum officinale (dandelion) anti-HIV-1 activity.

According to the tested differentiation, in vitro, compared to control values obtained from cells infected without treatment, treatment of dandelion showed a low level of HIV-1 replication.

Furthermore, the treatment of dandelion also exerted a strong effect on the viral transcriptase activity in a dose-dependent manner.

In other words, the dandelion extract has potent inhibitory activity against HIV-1 replication and reverse transcriptase activity to induce infection.

Based on the results, researchers suggest, " These findings provide additional support for the potential therapeutic efficacy of Taraxacum officinale. Extracts from this plant may be regarded as another starting point for the development of antiretroviral therapy with fewer side effects".

Taken altogether, Dandelion may be considered a remedy for the protection against HIV-1 infection, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Common Fig or Fig (Ficus carica) Gobbles Up Glioblastoma GBM Cells in Vitro

By Kyle J. Norton

The brain and spinal cord made up the nervous system. Brain and Spinal Cord tumors originating are not very common. Most primary tumors are caused by abnormal cell growth that surrounds and supports neurons, with a small number may be caused by gene defect from exposure to radiation or toxic chemicals. Benign tumors are noncancerous, and malignant tumors are cancerous.

More than 190.000 people in the US are diagnosed with a brain tumor each year alone.

Brain cancer is a medical and chronic condition characterized by cell growth disorderly in the brain tissue.

Glioblastoma or glioblastoma (also called GBM) caused mostly by the abnormal astrocytic cells and dead cells (necrosis) is considered one of the most aggressive cancers induced by the alternation of cells originated from the brain, including the cerebral hemispheres.

Most patients with GBM experience symptoms of brain swelling caused by the overexpression of the fluid surrounding the tumor.

Conventionally, due to the nature of rapid growth, surgery is necessary to relieve the brain pressure and remove the tumor as much as possible, followed by radiation and chemotherapy.

According to the statistics, in the US, the incidence affects mostly in the elderly with the diagnosed rate of 3.19 per 100,000 persons. The disease is rare in children.

GBM is deadly, patients with GBM have a median survival of less than one year and less than 2% of patients survive three years or more.

Fig is a species of F. Carica, belonging to the family Moraceae. It is a deciduous shrub, native to Southeast Asia. The tree can grow to a height of 33 ft and the fruit can be as large as 2.0 inches.

On finding natural compounds for the treatment of neurological diseases, researchers examined the cancer suppressive effect of Ficus carica (fig) latex (FCL) on glioblastoma (GBM).

On T98G, U-138 MG, and U-87 MG GBM cell lines treated by the combination of FCL and  FCL-temozolomide (TMZ), according to the tested differentiation,
* FCL causes cell death in GBM cells with different responses to FCL-temozolomide (TMZ), an oral chemotherapy drug.

* The cell death was attributed synergistically increased in combination with TMZ

* More importantly, the effect of FCL on the modulation of let-7d expression by suppressing proliferation and cell migration may be an important underlying mechanism of the anti-invasive effect of this extract.

Taken altogether, common fig or fig (Ficus carica)  used in a combination with chemo drug may be considered a remedy for the treatment of glioblastoma (GBM), pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Broccoli, the Natural Antioxidants

By Kyle J. Norton

Antioxidants are stable atom that plays a critical role in protecting the body against the attack of free radicals.

In other words, antioxidants inhibited the onset of free radical before they can cause a chain reaction in facilitating the protein, lipid and cell damage.

Antioxidants can either produced by the liver or intake from dietary sources. Under normal conditions, antioxidant enzymes produced by the body in a healthy individual are good enough to counter the bombardment of free radical attacks.

However, in people with a weakened immune system, intake dietary sources of antioxidants may be necessary.

There are 3 main types of antioxidants found in nature, including
* Antioxidant enzymes produced by the host, including superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase, and catalases.

* Antioxidants vitamins, that may be injected from the dietary sources such as fruits and vegetables, including vitamins A, C, D, and E. Most antioxidant vitamins are considered free radical scavengers that gobble up free radicals before they can induce a cascade of damage.

* Antioxidant Phytochemicals found in the plant including second metabolites.

Antioxidants keep our bodies functioning properly by reducing the risk of diseases associated with oxidative stress.

Free radicals are highly reactive molecules with an unpaired electron on the outer ring of the atom.
Due to its nature to become stable, free radicals readily to donate or steal an electron from other molecules, leading to the chain of domino's effect that can not be stopped until either the electrons are paired or inhibited by antioxidants.

This chain of reaction is the cause of oxidative stress, a condition is associated with either overexpression of free radicals or depletion of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host organs.

Overexpression of free radicals is known to cause damage in contributing to the etiology of many chronic health problems such as cardiovascular and inflammatory disease, cataracts, and cancer.

Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belongings to the family Brassicaceae. The veggie has large flower heads, usually green in color with a mass of flower heads surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant from the continent of Europe.

With an aim to find a natural food for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, researchers examined the phytochemical composition of 3 different purple sprouting broccoli varieties according to with their production cycle: EEP (Extra Early), EP (Early), and LP (Late) antioxidant activity.

The leaves of EP variety seems the richest in total phenolic acids, whereas the number of anthocyanins was higher in LP variety.

The levels of glucosinolates were higher in purple broccoli than in green cultivars and also higher than other purple broccolis grown under different climate conditions.

Additionally, EEP, EP, and LP purple sprouting broccoli varieties grown under the Mediterranean climate. showed a number of health-promoting nutrients and natural antioxidants.

The vitamin C, phenolic compounds, and glucosinolates in these purple varieties were higher than in traditionally grown green broccoli and other purple broccolis grown under different climate conditions.

Taken altogether, broccoli varieties may be considered antioxidant supplements for the prevention of oxidative stress disease, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Beta-Sitosterol Reduces the Onset of Gouty Arthritis in Vivo

By Kyle J. Norton

Arthritis is a general form of the inflammatory disease associated with the inflammation of one or more joints.

The most common symptoms are joint pain and stiffness found mostly in the aging population.

The most common caused of arthritis is a joint injury that did not heal properly, metabolic abnormalities caused by overexpression of uric acid and infection-induced bacteria or virus.

However, there are some cases of arthritis caused by autoimmunity, a condition in which the immune system mistakenly attacks the joint tissues, such as in rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus.

According to the information provided by the Arthritis Foundation, in the US, approximately 54 million adults are living with the condition.

Believe it or not, almost 300,000 babies and children have arthritis or a rheumatic condition.

Gout, a painful and recurrent condition mostly affected one joint is a type of arthritis caused by uric acid building up in the blood that induces joint inflammation.

Epidemiologically, high levels of uric acid found in the body that leads to the forming of crystals are the culprit, caused by the inability of the kidney to get rid of uric acid.

Most cases of gout are found in patients who follow the diet with a high intake of meats and seafood and foods containing higher levels of purine such as alcoholic beverages, especially beer, and drinks sweetened with fruit sugar (fructose).

Reduced intake of the aforementioned products has been found to reduce the onset of recurrence of the condition in many previous patients.

Believe it or not, most patients with gout and recurrent gout also associated with medical conditions of hypertension, renal insufficiency, and hypertriglyceridemia.

Gouty arthritis is a form of inflammatory arthritis associated with high levels of uric acid in the blood that lead to sudden, severe episodes of pain, tenderness, redness, warmth, and swelling of the joints.

Beta-Sitosterol is a phytochemical in the class of Phytosterols, belongings to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in avocados, rice bran, wheat germ, corn oils, fennel, peanuts, soybeans, hawthorn, basil, buckwheat. etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the prevention and treatment of arthritis, researchers examined the effects of ethanolic extract of L. trichocarpha, its ethyl acetate fraction and its main bioactive compounds on gouty arthritis by countering hyperuricemia and inflammation.

According to the results of an experimental model of gouty arthritis,
* Crude ethanolic extract and its ethyl acetate fraction showed significant urate-lowering effects.

* LTE was also able to significantly inhibit liver xanthine oxidase (XOD) activity in vivo at the dose of 250mg/kg.
\
* LTE, LTA, lupeol, β-sitosterol, lychnopholide, eremantholide, luteolin, and apigenin showed strong inhibitory activity against monosodium urate crystals-induced paw edema in mice.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "Ethanolic extract of Lychnophora trichocarpha and some of its bioactive compounds may be promising agents for the treatment of gouty arthritis since they possess both anti-hyperuricemic and anti-inflammatory properties.".
Taken altogether, beta-Sitosterol found abundantly in Lychnophora trichocarpha may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of gouty arthritis, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of beta-Sitosterol in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
