Herbal Artichoke, the Anti Skin Cancer Herbal Remedy

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a natural whole food for the treatment of skin cancer with no side effects, according to studies.

Skin cancer is a medical condition caused by cell growth irregularly in the skin tissue. Most cases of skin cancer begin in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the skin due to the alternation of DNA.

The causes of skin cancer are unknown. However, researchers do know that personal and family history, fair skin, long-term exposure sun UVB are some prevalent risk factors of the disease.

In the Western world, the common factor linking a person to skin cancer is cumulative sun exposure induced basal cell and squamous cell skin cancer.

According to the statistics, approximately 90 percent of nonmelanoma skin cancers are associated with exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun and basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common form of skin cancer.

In the US, sadly to say that approximately 4.3 million cases of BCC are diagnosed each year, causing the death of 3000 people.

Believe or not, more people are diagnosed with skin cancer each year in the U.S. than all other cancers combined.

Dr. Caroline Chang, in the concerns of widespread, nake skin exposure to the sun in the Summer in the risk of skin cancer, wrote, "Although personal melanoma risk factors are well established,... The desire to be tan, which has its roots in the medical profession, retains its popularity today despite evidence linking UV exposure to skin cancer".

The findings strongly suggested that the general public although has been warned that UV exposure is associated with skin cancer risk but some most people still have a desire to be tan.

Artichoke is a perennial thistle of Cynara cardunculus species of the Cynara genus, belonging to the family Carduoideae native to Southern Europe around the Mediterranean.

The herbal plant has been used in traditional medicine as a liver protective and detoxified agent, and to treat digestive disorders, abdominal pain gas and bloating, etc.

On finding a natural ingredient for the treatment of skin cancer with no side effects, researchers investigated the methanol extract of the flowers of artichoke (Cynara cardunculus) exhibited remarkable antitumor activity in an in vivo two-stage carcinogenesis test in mice.

Mice selected to the study were induced skin cancer by the injection of 12-O-tetradecanoyl phorbol-13-acetate (TPA).

The active fraction of the methanol extract including four triterpene alcohols and their corresponding acetates showed inhibitory effects on TPA-induced inflammation (1 microg/ear) with a 50% inhibitory dose of 0.50-0.91 micromol/ear.

Furthermore, the anti-skin cancer activity of 2 taraxastane-type hydroxy triterpenes, taraxasterol and faradiol, isolated from the flowers of Compositae plants Cynara scolymus (artichoke) and Chrysanthemum morifilolium (chrysanthemum), also demonstrated a similar effect in the previous study against 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA)-induced inflammation in mice.

More precisely, these compounds inhibited the tumor-promoting effect of TPA (1 microgram/mouse) on skin tumor formation following initiation with 7,12-dimethylbenz[alpha]anthracene (50 micrograms/mouse).

Taken altogether, artichoke processed numbers of the bioactive compound may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of skin cancer, pending to the results from a larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Bilberry Protects the Brain Neurons Against Toxicity

By Kyle J. Norton

Neuro-toxicity is a condition of brain damage caused by exposure to toxic substances.

The toxic condition was found to reduce the brain function in transmitting and processing signals to other parts of the nervous system.

Symptoms of neurotoxicity are totally depending on the degree of toxicity. Some symptoms may take some time to develop. However, in most cases, symptoms may appear immediately after exposure.

Depending on the area and location of neurons damage, weakness or numbness, loss of memory, vision, headache change of cognitive and behavioral and sexual dysfunction are the most common symptoms found in people with neurotoxicity.

According to the statistics provided by the University of Ibadan, in the United States, for instance, out of 63 million youths under 18 years of age, about 10% have diagnosable neurobehavioural problems with only 20% receiving therapy and the magnitude affected by neurotoxicity is unknown.

The University continued, "The adverse effects of neurotoxicity are among the most feared ill health in humans because they adversely affect the quality of life", and "Undoubtedly, the magnitude and potential severity of neurotoxicity problems make it imperative to invest in resources required to strengthen the basis for preventive intervention, the forerunner of which is the development of biomarkers for neurotoxicity at the individual and population levels".

In other words, out of millions of people who have neurobehavioural problems, researchers do not know how many of them are actually caused by toxicity.

Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.

The plant has been used as herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, and duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, and psoriasis, diabetes, etc.

In the analysis of natural compound with neuroprotective effect in patients with diabetes, researchers examined the antioxidants richly present in bilberry fruits effects on diabetes-related brain dysfunctions.

The study included the differentiation of the expression patterns of αCaMKII in hippocampal neurons from non-diabetic, diabetic and diabetic rats fed with an extract of bilberry fruit.

Where Ca(2+)/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase IIα (αCaMKII) plays a significant role in cognitive processes.

Diabetic rats hippocampal neurons immunoreactive (ir) to αCaMKII were swollen and the lengths of the neuronal fibers were reduced compared to the significantly longer of αCaMKII-positive nerve fibers in diabetic rats fed with bilberry fruit.

Injection of bilberry fruit also induced significant changes in the average larger diameter of αCaMKII-ir hippocampal neurons.

The results suggested that bilberry fruits exerted the neuroprotective effect on hippocampal neurons in diabetes through its antioxidants activity.

Furthermore, in order to find more information of bilberry effect on the brain, researchers examined it's anthocyanoside (VMA) and/or its main anthocyanidin constituents (cyanidin, delphinidin, and malvidin) neuroprotective effect against retinal damage in vitro and in vivo.

In RGC cultures, VMA and all three anthocyanidins protected the brain against SIN-1 (chloride) toxicity, inhibited lipid peroxidation in mouse forebrain homogenates through the antioxidant property and  NMDA-induced morphological retinal damage by allowing high levels of calcium ions (Ca2+) to enter the cells.

Moreover, VMA and all three anthocyanidins also protected the retinal damage by increasing the TUNEL-positive cells in the ganglion cell layer.

Dr. Matsunaga N, the lead scientists said, "VMA and its anthocyanidins have neuroprotective effects (exerted at least in part via an anti-oxidation mechanism) in these in vitro and in vivo models of retinal diseases".

Taken altogether, bilberry may be considered a functional food for prevention and treatment of neurological diseases associated with neurotoxicity, pending to the validation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Whole Food Ginger, the Natural Treatment for Neurological Disorders

By Kyle J. Norton

Neurological disorders are a group of diseases associated with the neurons in the brain and spinal cord of the central nervous system.

The WHO in the evaluation of neurological disorder wrote, "Neurological disorders contribute to 92 million disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) in 2005 projected to increase to 103 million in 2030 (approximately a 12% increase). While Alzheimer and other dementias are projected to show a 66% increase from 2005 to 2030".

Where one DALY represents the loss of the equivalent of one year of full health.

Believe or not, there are more than 600 diseases of the central nervous system, including brain tumors, epilepsy, dementia such as Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease and stroke.

The top 3 of neurological diseases include
* Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disease in the elderly, associated with the worsening of memory, thinking and behavior that severe enough to affect language communication, memory, lifelong hobbies or social life

* Bell's Palsy is a condition caused by sudden weakness or paralysis of facial muscles on one side of the face.

* Cerebral Palsy is a neurological disorder of children affecting a child's movement, motor skills, and muscle tone.

Conventionally, the treatment of neurological diseases is totally depending on the type of disease. However, the aim of the treatment is to improve quality of life, including lifestyle change, therapy to reduce the symptoms and restore some functions, pain relief, and medication to control the progression of the disease.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine for the treatment of dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

Researchers on finding a natural compound for the treatment of neurological disorders with no side effects investigated the ginger effects on age-related neurological disorders (ANDs), including neurodegenerative diseases, are multifactorial disorders with a risk that increases with aging.

According to the analysis of the structure-activity relationships of ginger phytochemicals, ginger was effective for the treatment of ANDs by targeting different ligand sites.

Furthermore, ginger and its constituents, such as 6-gingerol, 6-shogaol, 6-paradol, zingerone, and dehydrozingerone, are effective for ameliorating the neurological symptoms and pathological conditions of ANDs through by modulating cell death or cell survival signaling molecules, observed through assay differentiation.

Based on these results, researchers in a joint study led by the Kyung Hee University, wrote, "we conclude that the active ingredients in ginger have therapeutic potential in ANDs".

Moreover, in order to reveal more information of the ginger anti ANDs property, researchers investigated the combined extract of Cyperus rotundus and Zingiber officinale (CP1) on the improvement of age-related dementia in rats with AF64A-induced memory deficits.

The study included male Wistar rats weighing 180-200 g orally given CP1 at doses of 100, 200 and 300 mg.kg-1 BW for a period of 14 days after bilateral intracerebroventricular administration of AF64A.

CP1 administration enhanced memory, increased neuronal density and decreased AChE activity and oxidative stress status, observed by the tested assays.

CP1 protected neurons integrity and viability by activating the protein associated with the regulation of meiosis, mitosis, and postmitotic functions in differentiated cells.

Dr. Sutalangka C, the lead scientist in the neurological team wrote, "These results suggested that CP1 might improve memory via enhanced cholinergic function and decreased neurodegeneration and oxidative stress".

Take all together, ginger may be considered functional alternatives for prevention and treatment of neurological disorders, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Phytochemical Betanin Inhibits Lung Cancer in Vitro and Vivo

By Kyle J. Norton

The lungs are a pair of spongy, air-filled organs located on either side of the chest with the main function to process of gas exchange during breathing.

In other words, lung transfer life-giving oxygen into the blood supply and remove carbon dioxide produced by cells metabolism from the blood.

Additionally, the lung is also the first line defense against inhaled particles and prevent the circulation of emboli such as blood clot (thrombus), a fat globule (fat embolism), a bubble of air or other gas (gas embolism), or foreign material.

Lung cancer is a medical condition characterized by irregular cell growth in the lung as a result of the alternation of cells in the lung tissue.

Most cases of lung cancer start in the cell on the surface of the inner lining of the lung tissue, before proliferating into deeper layers to induce a tumor.

At the early stage, due to the very small size of the tumor, most patients are asymptomatic. However, as the proliferation continues over time, as the later stage, the primary lung cancer not only can elevate the general symptoms shared by all cancers accompanied by localized specific symptoms such as severe pain and bleeding, but also travel a distance away from the lung to cause secondary metastasis via circulation of blood and fluids.

Most common secondary metastatic cancers from primary lung cancer are adrenal gland, bones, brain, and liver.

Out of many risk factors associated with lung cancer, smoking has been found to a strongly negative implication to induce the early onset of the disease.

Dr. Ozlü T, the lead scientist said, "Nowadays, around one-third of adults are known to be smokers, and smoking rates are increasing among the female population. It is estimated that deaths attributable to tobacco use will rise to 10 million by 2025, and one-third of all adult deaths are expected to be related to cigarette smoking".

And, " The association between cigarettes and lung cancer has been proven by large cohort studies. Tobacco use has been reported to be the main cause of 90% of male and 79% of female lung cancers. 90% of deaths from lung cancer are estimated to be due to smoking. The risk of lung cancer development is 20-40 times higher in lifelong smokers compared to non-smokers".

The finding strongly suggested the risk of lung cancer in smokers is substantially higher compared to non-smokers.

Betanin is Phytochemicals in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments of Betacyanins, belonging to the group of Betalains, found abundantly in beets, chard, etc.

In the urgency to find a natural compound for the treatment of lung cancer, researchers examined the chemopreventive activity of betanin by oral consumption was investigated in two mouse lung tumor models.

The study included Vinyl carbamate (VC) and benzo(a)pyrene (B(a)P) induced lung tumors in female A/J mice, following by the treatment of betanin in drinking water.

Betanin significantly decreased tumor multiplicity and tumor load induced by Vinyl carbamate (VC) and benzo(a)pyrene (B(a)P).

Precisely, tumor multiplicity and tumor load were decreased by 20% and 39% in the VC lung model, and by 46% and 65% in the B(a)P lung model, respectively.

Betanin inhibited the lung tumor by reducing the number of microvessels formation and increasing the expression of a protein associated with programs cell death.

In other words, the lung tumor inhibitory effects were involved in the induction of apoptosis and angiogenesis.

The findings strongly suggested that betanin significantly inhibits lung tumorigenesis in vivo.

Moreover, compared to capsanthin, cranberry, red onion skin, and short and long red bell peppers, betanin showed in a vitro inhibitory effect on Epstein-Barr virus early antigen (EBV-EA) induction using Raji cells.

According to the results from the lung bioassays, betanin also revealed a significant lung tumor inhibitory effect.

Taken altogether, betanin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of lung cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of betanin the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Artichoke, Protects Your Upper Digestive Tract Against Functional Dyspepsia (FD)

By Kyle J. Norton

Functional dyspepsia (FD) is a chronic condition characterized by burning sensation caused by uncoordinated and ineffectual emptying of the upper digestive tract with no measurable structural abnormalities.

Functional dyspepsia (FD) are subdivided into two types: postprandial distress syndrome (PDS) and epigastric pain syndrome (EPS).

According to statistics, approximately 20-45% of Canadians have such condition, but only a low percentage of patients seek help from physicians. and functional dyspepsia accounts for 62.5% of dyspepsia in a population of black African patients, compared to other races.

The exact causes of functional dyspepsia are unidentified. Some researchers suggested that excessive acid secretion, inflammation, food allergies, unhealthy lifestyle choice and long term use of medications may have strong implications in the onset of the syndrome.

Pain, digestive discomforts such as fullness and bloating, excessive burping, nausea, and sometimes vomiting GERD, a sour taste in the mouth are the most common symptoms of functional dyspepsia.

If you experience some of the aforementioned symptoms, please make sure you check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.

Some researchers suggested that unhealthy dietary habits are one of the major risk factors associated with the onset of FD in the world.

Dr. Ji-Hao Xu, the lead scientist in the assessment of dietary habit in the risk of FD, wrote, "Unhealthy dietary habits were more prevalent in the FD group than in the control groups (75.86% versus 37.50%; p<0.001). FD was found to be associated with irregular mealtime, dining out, fatty food, sweet food, and coffee (p<0.05). The impact of each dietary factor varied with FD subtypes".

And,  "Certain types of dietary habits were positively correlated with the prevalence of FD. FD subtypes showed relatively different associations with dietary factors".

The finding strongly suggested by following a healthy diet pattern, FD may be preventable.

On the finding a natural therapeutics for the treatment of functional dyspepsia (FD), researchers compared the efficacy of ginger and artichoke supplementation (SG) versus placebo in the treatment of FD.

The prospective multicentre, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, parallel-group comparison of the supplement and placebo over a period of 4 weeks included 126 FD patients given 2 capsules/day (before lunch and dinner (supplementation/placebo: 65/61).

After 14 days, supplement treatment showed a significant amelioration of FD, compared to placebo.

SG treatment group also showed a significant reduction of nausea, epigastric fullness, epigastric pain, and bloating compared to placebo.

Dr.Giacosa A, the lead scientist wrote, "The association between ginger and artichoke leaf extracts appears safe and efficacious in the treatment of FD and could represent a promising treatment for this disease".

In order to reveal more information about artichoke anti-FD property, researchers assessed the efficacy of artichoke leaf extract (ALE) in the treatment of patients with functional dyspepsia (FD).

The double-blind, randomized controlled trial (RCT) included 247 patients with functional dyspepsia treated with either a commercial ALE preparation (2 x 320 mg plant extract t.d.s.) or a placebo.

ALE improved the overall symptom significantly over the 6 weeks compared to the placebo

Similarly, patients treated with ALE also showed significantly greater improvement in the global quality-of-life scores (NDI) compared to the placebo.

Dr. Holtmann G, the lead scientist after taking into account co and confounders wrote in the final report, "he ALE preparation tested was significantly better than the placebo in alleviating symptoms and improving the disease-specific quality of life in patients with functional dyspepsia".

Taken altogether, artichoke may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of functional dyspepsia (FD), pending to the confirmation of a larger sample and multicenter human study.

Phytochemical 3,3'-Diindolylmethane Kills Bladder Cancer Cells

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a bioactive ingredient for the treatment of bladder cancer with no side effects, according to studies.

Bladder cancer is a medical and chronic condition characterized by irregular cell growth in the bladder tissues.

Most cases of bladder cancer begin in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the bladder tissue before penetrating into the deeper layers of the bladder.

There are three types of bladder cancer classified depending on their origination.
* Transitional cell carcinoma
Transitional cell carcinoma starts in the innermost tissue layer of the bladder which can change shape and stretch without breaking apart. In other words,  they are able to stretch when the bladder is full and shrink when it is emptied.

More than 90 percent of bladder cancers begin in the transitional cells

* Squamous cell carcinoma
Cancer begins in squamous cells found in the tissues of the surface of the bladder, caused by long-term infection or irritation.

About 8 percent of people with bladder cancers begin squamous cells.

* Adenocarcinoma
The cancer is originated from the glandular tissue of the bladder, including the surface layer of skin, glands and a variety of other tissue, due to long-term irritation and inflammation.

Only 2 percent of people with the condition have a third bladder cancer type.

Regardless of the types of cancer originated, bladder cancer shares the general symptoms of other types of cancer accompanied by specific symptoms such as bladder spasms, blood in urine, frequent urination, pain or burning sensation during urination, pain in lower back and/or abdomen, inability to urinate, urinary urgency, reduced bladder capacity, and difficulty in urination.

If you have some of the aforementioned symptoms, please make sure that you talk to your doctor to rule out the possibility of b bladder cancer.

Out of many risk factors associated with the onset of the diseases, smoking has been associated with most of the patients.

Dr. Neal D Freedman, wrote, "...the population attributable risk of bladder cancer for tobacco smoking is 50–65% in men and 20–30% in women and that current cigarette smoking triples bladder cancer risk relative to never smoking".

And, "Over the last 30 years, incidence rates have remained stable in the United States (men: 123.8/100,000 person-years to 142.2/100,000 person-years; women: 32.5/100,000 person-years to 33.2/100,000 person-years), yet changing smoking prevalence and cigarette composition warrant revisiting risk estimates for smoking and bladder cancer in more recent data".

In other words, if you are smokers, your risk of bladder cancer is substantially higher compared to never smoking individuals.

On finding a natural ingredient for the treatment of bladder cancer, researchers investigated the antiproliferative and anti-inflammatory potential effects of diindolylmethane (DIM) and lupeol on the experimental bladder cancer.

The study included 60 healthy male Wistar rats were selected and randomly divided into six groups, with 10 rats in each group.
* Group I: control.

* Group II: N-butyl-N-(4-hydroxybutyl) nitrosamine (BBN; 150 mg/gavage/twice a week) for 8 weeks, and then they were given 100 ppm concentrations of dimethyl arsenic acid (DMA) in the drinking water for 28 weeks.

* Group III: BBN + DMA + DIM (5 mg/kg body weight (b.w.)/day) treatment was started after BBN treatment, and it was orally administered for 28 weeks)

* Group IV: BBN + DMA + lupeol (50 mg/kg b.w./day) treatment was started after BBN treatment, and it was orally administered for 28 weeks); and

* Groups V and VI: DIM and lupeol treatment alone for 36 weeks

At the final day of the experiment, DIM and lupeol treatment showed the inhibition of tumor growth in the bladder by histopathological confirmations and increased the expression of a protein associated with tumor suppression.

According to the Western blot analysis, the inhibition of bladder cancer also was accompanied by decreasing the production of proinflammatory cytokines.

Furthermore, DIM and lupeol treatment significantly decreased the levels of an enzyme associated with a mediator of tumor repopulation (Cox-2) in bladder tissue samples and NMP 22 in urine samples.

Moreover, in order to reveal more information of DIM anti-bladder cancer property, researchers to investigate the apoptotic properties of Diindolylmethane (DIM) and Lupeol on N-Butyl-N-(4-hydroxybutyl) Nitrosamine (BBN) initiated and Dimethylarsinic Acid (DMA) in the promotion of urinary bladder cancer.

The experiment included 60 male Wistar rats divided into 6 groups. Group I: Control. Group II: Rats were experimentally developed bladder carcinogenesis with BBN and DMA. Group III and IV: DIM and lupeol were administered after BBN treatment for 28 weeks. Group V and VI: DIM and lupeol alone treatment for 36 weeks.

During the study, DIM and lupeol induced cancer cell apoptosis and inhibited cell proliferation by activated the stimulation of proteins associated with cell death programming and deactivated the gene associated with cell differentiation and division.

In other words, administration of DIM and lupeol inhibited the progression of bladder cancer, by promoting the expression of apoptotic Bax, caspase-3, caspase-9 and inhibiting the expression of anti-apoptotic Bcl-2, PCNA in the urinary bladder of rats.

Dr. Prabhu B, the lead scientist wrote in the final report, "Administration of diindolylmethane and lupeol treatment induces apoptosis and cellular proliferation by its anti-carcinogenic properties. From our results, DIM and lupeol would be the agent or adjunct for the treatment of bladder carcinogenesis".

Taken altogether, 3,3'-Diindolylmethane may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of bladder cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of 3,3'-diindolylmethane in form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Bilberry Protects the Retina Against Degeneration

By Kyle J. Norton

Retinal degeneration is a condition of retinopathy associated with the gradual loss of neuron near the inner surface of the retina of the eyes.

Most cases of retinopathy are caused by abnormal blood flow.

The most common forms of retinal degeneration are macular degeneration which is a condition when the small central portion of the retina, (the macula) deteriorates and retinitis pigmentosa (RP) which is a rare genetic disorder involved a breakdown and loss of cells in the retina.

Retinal degeneration disease has been found to have a strong impact on daily life, ranging from performing basic functions to personal independence and mental health and vision loss.

According to the statistics, the overall prevalence of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is in the range of 1.38%-1.55%) and retinitis pigmentosa is 1 in 3,500 to 1 in 4,000 individuals.

Age-related macular degeneration affects more than 1.75 million individuals in the United States, and the number is increasing rapidly due to the growth of an aging population. The number of persons having AMD will increase by 50% to 2.95 million in 2020.

Symptoms of retinal degeneration may include blurred central vision or a blind spot in the center of the visual field.

In severe cases, loss of vision may be possible, particularly in people over the age of 60.

Dr. Rita Ehrlich, the lead scientist said, "Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is an ocular disease that causes damage to the retinal macula, mostly in the elderly. Normal aging processes can lead to structural and blood flow changes that can predispose patients to AMD".

Researchers in the concern about retinal degenerative diseases induced vision loss and retinal cell death examined the protective effects of the complex lutein formula (CLF) by combining several natural compounds: Calendula officinalis, Lycium barbarum, Vaccinium myrtillus, Cassia obtusifolia, and Rhodiola Rosea.

The formula showed significant protection of retinal functions in an animal model for light-induced retinal degeneration.

Before applying the formula, retinal function in animals exposed to light for 7 days decreased significantly.

However, CLF injection improved the superiority of the retinal function despite light exposure.

Furthermore, CLF restored a greater portion of the outer nuclear layer (ONL) (i.e. the nuclei of photoreceptors) in these animals compared to that of animals which had not received the formula after 7 days of light exposure.

The findings strongly suggested CLF including bilberry exerted a retinal protect against the gradual loss of vision caused by degeneration.

Dr. the lead scientist after taking other factors into account wrote in the final report, "our dietary CLF supplement attenuated retinal function loss resulting from long-term light exposure".

Long term light exposure on animal models has been associated with retinal degeneration, as it damages the retina (phototoxicity) and decreases photoreceptor which has strong implications for age-related macular degeneration.

Taken altogether, bilberry used alone or combined with other herbal remedies may be considered functional remedies for the prevention of retinal degeneration, pending to the validation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.
