Phytochemical Sulforaphane (Dithiolthiones), the Potent Anti-Liver Disease Bioactive Compound, According to Studies

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of liver disease with no side effects, according to studies.

Liver disease in most cases is linked to alcohol or drugs. In fact, it can be caused by a variety of factors and affecting everyone from infants to older adults, including infected viri such as hepatitis A, B, C, and medication overloaded.

Dithiolthiones are phytochemicals in the class of Organosulfides, found abundantly in cruciferous vegetables, garden sorrel, horseradish, etc.

Most common symptoms of liver disease include weakness and fatigue, weight loss, nausea, vomiting, and jaundice.

If you are experiencing some of the above symptoms, please make sure you check with your doctor to rule out the possibility of liver disease.

According to the statistic provided by the Canadian Liver Foundation,  approximately, one in 10 Canadians, or more than three million people, have some form of liver disease and over a period of only eight years, the death rate from liver disease has risen nearly 30%.

This incidences of liver disease not only lead to dismiss the quality of life and life expectancy but cause a financial burden of the health care system.

Conventional treatment of liver disease depends on your diagnosis. Most cases of liver disease can be treated with lifestyle modifications, such as stopping alcohol use in alcoholic fatty liver disease or losing weight, in nonalcoholic liver disease.

Dr. Valerio Nobili, the lead scientist in the examined the role of lifestyle changes in the management of chronic liver disease, said, "several liver conditions which are directly affected by overweight and obese status, including non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, chronic infection with hepatitis C virus and post-liver transplant status".

And,  "The deleterious effects of obesity on liver disease and overall health can be significantly impacted by a culture that fosters sustained nutritional improvement and regular physical activity".

With an aim to find a natural ingredient for the treatment of liver disease, researchers evaluated the ability of sulforaphane, an activator of Nrf2, to blunt CYP2E1-dependent, ethanol-induced steatosis in vivo and in vitro.

Where Nuclear factor (erythroid-derived 2)-like 2, (Nrf2), is a pro- antioxidant protein which plays a critical role in protecting our body against oxidative damage triggered by injury and inflammation.

And CYP2E1 is a protein involved in the metabolism of xenobiotics in the body.

Application of sulforaphane (SFN) treatment increased the levels of antioxidants by activating the levels of the Nrf2 and lowering oxidant stress observed by the decline in lipid peroxidation and increase in glutathione (GSH) levels.

SFN also decreased liver levels of triglycerides and cholesterol elevated by the injection of ethanol.

The results strongly suggested that SFN inhibited liver disease by increasing expression of antioxidant enzymes and lowing the expression of free radical as well as reducing the liver fat deposits.

Moreover, in the investigation to determine whether glucoraphanin and its breakdown product sulforaphane, are potent modulators of various phase I and phase II enzymes involved in carcinogen-metabolizing enzyme systems in vitro, researchers showed that injection of glucoraphanin at higher concentration (25 μM) decreased dealkylation of methoxyresorufin, a marker for cytochrome P4501 activity

Where cytochrome P4501 is an enzyme involved in the metabolism of endogenous substrates and drugs, as well as the activation of certain toxins and environmental pollutants.

Compared to glucoraphanin, sulforaphane is superior to its precursor in modulating carcinogen-metabolizing enzyme systems in vitro.

The University of Rhode Island, Kingston study also suggested that SF activate Nrf2 activation in inhibited lipid accumulation in white adipose tissue, suppressed adipogenesis, insulin resistance, and glucose intolerance, and hepatic steatosis in Lep(ob/ob) mice.

Eggplant, the Cardio-Protective Functional Veggie, Scientists Suggest

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a whole fruit or vegetable with a potential to treat cardiovascular disease with no side effects, some studies found.

Cardiovascular disease is a class of conditions associated with heart and blood vessels. Anything that affects the normal heart and blood vessel functionings is considered risk factors of the disease, including heart's muscle, valves or rhythm, and blockage of blood vessels.

According to the statistics, in the US, approximately, 610,000 people die of heart disease every year that's 1 in every 4 deaths. The disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women.

The causes of cardiovascular diseases are associated with the location that affects the functioning of the heart and blood vessels, including atherosclerosis is caused by the blockade of the blood vessel due to the accumulation of plaques in the arteries and arrhythmias caused by abnormal heart rhythms.

Epidemiological studies strongly suggested that most common cardiovascular disease that affects most of the heart disease patients are coronary artery disease (CAD).

Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the most common form of heart disease caused by one or more of the coronary arteries become narrow or blocked.

Some researchers suggested that the widespread of the diagnosis of coronary artery disease (CAD) in the Western world probably is a result of the promotion of the Western diet over the last few decades.

The diet high in bad cholesterol, salts and sugar and carcinogens associated with the accumulation of plaques on the arteries have been found to be a culprit of the onset of coronary artery disease in many studies.

Dr. Oikonomou E, the lead author in the joint study led by the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens in the concerns of CAD widespread in the Western world launched an investigation to examine the independent predictive value of an unhealthy diet on the severity of coronary artery disease (CAD).

In the total of 188 symptomatic stable patients with CAD. Patients were categorized as having severe CAD or nonsevere CAD by coronary angiography.

Among several demographics and clinical characteristics, all patients were tested using a semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire.

By analysing the 8 principal components in the 8 distinct dietary patterns found in the returned questionnaire, researchers found that The Western dietary pattern (increased intake of fat, red meat, and carbohydrates and minimal consumption of fruits and green leafy vegetables) was predictive of severe CAD (area under the curve: 0.73, 95% confidence intervals: 0.64-0.83, P < .001).

These results not only suggested that the Western not only causes the onset of the disease but also increased the risk of severity of coronary artery lesions in patients with stable CAD.

The doctors in the study wrote the final report, "the findings highlight the role of dietary patterns when estimating cardiovascular risk for the management of patients with CAD".

Eggplant is a species of S. melongena, belonging to the family Solanaceae and native to India.

The plant has been cultivated in southern and eastern Asia since prehistory. It is famous for its deep purple and the best eggplant can be found from August through October when it is in season.

The chemical constituents of eggplant include sterols (i.e. typical plant sterols, androstane, pregnane and cholestane derivatives, steroidal alkaloids and sapogenins), phytosterols, triterpenes, δ-amyrin, Chlorogenic acid, Nasunin, and other Polyphenolic compounds.

In the finding, a natural compound with the efficacy for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease with no side effects, researchers at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine examines the role of raw and grilled eggplants on cardioprotection using an isolated perfusion heart model.

The animals were fed freeze-dried products of either raw or grilled eggplants for 30 days. After 30 days, isolated working hearts were subjected to 30 min ischemia followed by 2 h of reperfusion.

The medical assays suggested eggplants process potent cardioprotective compounds judging by their ability to increase left ventricular function, and reduce myocardial infarct size and cardiomyocyte apoptosis.

Interestingly, researchers found no difference in cardioprotective ability between the raw and grilled products.

Based on the antioxidant vitamins classification, researchers showed that vitamin A, vitamin C, and β-carotene, were lower and some of the polyphenolic components, especially nasunin content, were higher in grilled eggplants, These result indicated that there must be some other ingredient processed by both grill and raw eggplants that exert cardiovascular diseases not found in this study.

Moreover, in the study to analyze total phenolics and antioxidant capacity in the indigenous vegetables for cardioprotective effect researchers at the Tuskegee University conducted a group analysis including collard greens, mustard greens, kale, okra, green onion, butter beans, butter peas, purple hull peas, rutabagas, and eggplant.

At a concentration of 10.0 mg dried vegetable equivalent/ml, the extract of these vegetables exerted a significant antioxidant activity by reducing 13.2-88.5% DPPH(•) radical in 30 min.

The Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity. (ORAC) value ranged from 2.5 to 100.7 µmoles of Trolox equivalents per gram of dried sample.

The antioxidant capacity of the vegetable samples was highly related to their total phenolic content.

The evidence suggested these indigenous vegetables are good sources of the phenolic compounds, which might provide anti-oxidative protection against free radicals in inducing chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular disease.

Taken altogether, eggplant processed abundantly bioactive antioxidants may be considered a functional vegetable for the prevention and an adjunct therapy combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of cardiovascular disease without inducing any adverse effects

Phytochemical Indole-3-carbinol In the Prevention and Treatment of Breast cancer

By Kyle J. Norton

Indole-3-carbinol may be the pharmaceutical target in the searching of a chemo drug doe the treatment of breast cancer, some scientists suggested.

As a phytochemical in the class of Indoles, Indole-3-carbinol processes a unique function by the breaking down of the glucosinolate glucobrassicin found abundantly in cabbage, kale, Brussels sprouts, rutabaga, mustard greens, broccoli, etc.

Breast cancer is a medical and chronic condition caused by cell growth irregularly and uncontrollably in the breast tissue. At the early stage, most case breast cancer starts in the cells of the inner lining tissue of milk ducts (Ductal carcinoma) or the lobules (Lobular carcinoma) that supply the ducts with milk.

At the advanced stage, breast cancer cell caused by alternation of DNA can travel far the way from the primary site to infect other healthy tissue and organs.

Most patient at the early may have a lump when touching with no symptoms.

Patients who inherited the genetic preposition of BRCA1 and 2 are associated with over 60% of the risk of breast cancer.

However, an unhealthy diet and lifestyle are some of the preventable risk factors that form a major cause of the breast cancer onset.

Dr. Harvie M, the lead scientist on breast cancer program team at the University Hospital of South Manchester NHS Foundation Trust, said, " The World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) and American Cancer Society (ACS) cancer prevention guidelines recommend maintaining a healthy weight, undertaking at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity exercise per week, limiting alcohol consumption, and eating a plant-based" and "Lifestyle factors appear to modify risk among high-risk women with a family history and those with typical risk of the general population".

In Post menopause, weight control is the major factor throughout life appears to prevent breast cancer after menopause.

Daily physical activity and reduced intake alcohol throughout life are associated with reduced risk of developing pre- and postmenopausal breast cancer, however, smoking during adolescence or early adulthood increases later risk of breast cancer.

Interestingly, in the depth discussion of the diet pattern in risk of breast cancer, researchers do not find the direct link to breast cancer risk.

These results suggested by actively following the healthy lifestyle and moderate exercise, risk of breast cancer can be decreased substantially.

The team on the final report said, "Recent expert reports estimate that successful lifestyle changes could prevent 25% to 30% of cases of breast cancer".

According to the statistic, in 2010, over 250,000 new cases of breast cancer were expected to be diagnosed in women in the U.S. alone and the risk of getting invasive breast cancer during the lifetime of women is 1/8.

Dr. the lead author in the research team of cancer program in the investigation to examine the effect of indole-3-carbinol cyclic tetrameric derivative (CTet) in breast cancer cell proliferation by endoplasmic reticulum stress and autophagy-related cell death induction conducted an experiment to evaluated the synergistic activity of CTet in combination with cisplatin and doxorubicin in triple-negative breast cancer cell lines.

In MDA included -MB-231 and BT-20 triple-negative breast cancer cells, CTet in combination with both cisplatin and doxorubicin synergistically inhibits cell viability and induces autophagy.

The efficacy of the CTet and combination exerted a strong anti-cancer effect as seen in the MAP1LC3B gene that is responsible for a normal physiological process in the body in dealing with the destruction of cells.
Pre-treated with cisplatin and doxorubicin demonstrated a strong cytotoxic activity of CTet in cells in the tested cancer cell lines.

The findings reaffirmed the potential of CTet as a chemopreventive agent or chemotherapeutic in combination with standard approaches for triple-negative breast cancer.

Furthermore, indole-3-carbinol cyclic tetrameric derivative CTet induces autophagy and inhibits breast cancer cell proliferation, researchers at the University of Urbino Carlo Bo conducted an investigation to examine the antitumoral activity of a mixture of tri- and tetrameric cyclic I3C derivatives (CTr/CTet) both in vitro (MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cell lines.

Observation of the application on the tested cancer cell line suggested CTr/CTet mixture inhibit breast cancer cell proliferation (IC50 = 1.3 and 1.6 μg/ml in MCF-7 and MDAMB- 231, respectively) inducing the G0/1 cell cycle phase accumulation.

The efficacy was attributed to the mixture in activating the overexpression of p21, p27 and GADD45A, which are the cell cycle regulators, nuclear translocation of FOXO3ain the induction of cell apoptosis and inhibition of Akt activity and downregulation of estrogen receptor.in stimulating the cancer cell proliferation.

Moreover, n vivo, the tumor growth of xenotransplanted was also inhibited by reducing the function of Cyclin E and its low molecular weight that is important in the transition from G1 to S phase of the cell cycle that determines initiation of DNA duplication.

Taken altogether, Indole-3-carbinol processed apoptotic and antiproliferative activity can be considered a functional supplement for the prevention and combined with primary medicine for treatment of breast cancer.

However, further data collection large example size and multi-centers studies performed with human consumption of the phytochemical during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of Indole-3-carbinol anti-breast cancer possibilities.

Phytochemical Allyl isothiocyanate, the Potential Anti Brain Cancer Bioactive Compound

By Kyle J. Norton

Phytochemical Allyl isothiocyanate may be next pharmacotherapeutic target to identify the chemo drug for the treatment of brain cancer without inducing any side effects.

Phytochemicals, the natural chemical constituent, protect the plants against diseases and form their outer's color.

Brain and spinal cord make up the nervous system. Brain and Spinal Cord tumors originated are not very common.

Brain cancer is a medical and chronic condition characterized by cell growth disorderly in the brain tissue.

Benign tumors are noncancerous, and malignant tumors are cancerous. More than 190.000 people in the US are diagnosed with a brain tumor each year alone.

Most brain types of brain cancer in the older adult ages 50 to 60 are Chordomas. The cancer is a rare and slow growing, but it can invade adjacent bone and put pressure on the nearby neural tissue.

Meningiomas, the most common type of benign brain tumor of the age group 40-50s. However, a small percentage of these tumors can be malignant.

According to the statistic provided by the Canadian cancer society, Every day about 25 Canadians is diagnosed with a brain tumor.

The 5-year survival rate of brain cancer is only 25%, compared to over 60% for cancers overall.  Most adults with a diagnosis of aggressive glioblastoma survive only 1–2 years after their diagnosis.

The exact causes of brain cancer are debatable.  Researchers di not know why people with the same health conditions, family history, some are at a higher risk to develop brain cancer while others do not.

Some researchers suggested genetic preposition and acquired gene mutation due to long-term exposure to chemical toxins may be the prevalent risk factor that causes the alternation of brain cell DNA.

Most common symptoms of brain cancer depending on the stage are persistent headaches and localized pain, gradual loss of sensation and movement, speech difficulty and persistent pain

If you are experiencing some of the above symptoms, please make sure you check with your doctor immediately to rule the brain cancer possibility.

Allyl isothiocyanate is phytochemical containing sulfur in the class of organosulfur compound, found abundantly in horseradish, mustard, wasabi, etc.

Most primary tumors are caused by abnormal cells growth that surrounds and support neurons, with a small number may be caused by a gene defect from exposure to radiation or toxic chemicals.

In the examining the side effects of Allyl isothiocyanate from the available data suggest that urinary concentrations of AITC equivalent are at least ten times higher than in the plasma, and tissue levels of AITC equivalent in the urinary bladder were 14-79 times higher than in other organs after oral AITC administration to rats for the treatment of cancer.

These results indicated AITC may be most effective in the bladder as a cancer chemopreventive compound, as AITC at high-dose levels exhibited a low degree of cytotoxicity and genotoxicity in animal cancer studies.

Once again, the experiment reaffirmed the effect of AITC in the exhibition of many desirable attributes of a cancer chemopreventive agent.

In the reassessment of Allyl isothiocyanate (AITC) in the reduced risk of cancer, researchers at the National Chung Hsing University conducted an experiment to examine the effects of the phytochemical in the brain cancer cells.
In compared to other cancer cell lines inhibition, AITC significantly decreased proliferation and viability of human brain malignant glioma GBM 8401 cells in a dose-dependent manner with IC50 9.25+/-0.69 microM for 24 h-treatment.

In cell differentiated assay, AITC induced significantly G2/M arrest and sub-G1 phase (apoptotic population) in GBM 8401 cells.

AITC markedly reduced the CDK1/cyclin B activity and protein levels which are responsible for cancer cell proliferation and survival.

Furthermore, AITC-induced apoptotic cell death through enhancing the proteins associated with cells death programming.

Dr. Chen NG, the lead scientists at the final report, said, "AITC is a potent anti-human brain malignant glioma drug and it shows a remarkable action on cell cycle arrest before a commitment for apoptosis is reached".

Taken altogether, it is safe to suggest that Phytochemical Allyl isothiocyanate may be used as chemopreventive and functional phytochemical for high-risk of brain cancer individual and an adjunct therapy combined with primary medicine for the treatment of brain cancer.

Eggplant, Night Shape Veggie Which Processes the Potential for the Prevention and Treatment Type 2 Diabetes

By Kyle J. Norton

Eggplant, the night shape fruit or vegetable may have a strong effect in reducing risk and treatment of type 2 diabetes, some researchers suggested.

Type 2 diabetes is a condition caused by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate glucose.

The condition of insulin resistance is either caused by cells in pancreas dying off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol.

According to the US statistic in 2015, approximately 30.3 million Americans, or 9.4% of the population, had diabetes. and 1.25 million American children and adults have type 1 diabetes.

Some researchers suggested that the widespread of type 2 diabetes in the US was associated with the promotion of the Western diet which has been found to complicate the risk of insulin receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol, affecting the receptor in absorbing and releasing insulin from and to the body.

Dr. Merat S, the lead scientist in the study of a group of mice involved the Western diet risk of insulin resistance and hyperinsulinemia wrote, "The Western diet group had higher average glucose levels (187+/-16 versus 159+/-12 mg/dL) and 4.5-fold higher plasma insulin levels".and "the Western diets commonly used in LDLR-/- mice may not only induce atherosclerosis, but also IR, potentially complicating the interpretation of results".

These results firmly suggested long-term followers of the Western diet high in saturated and trans fat, red meat, processed foods and low in fruits and vegetables are the main culprits for the onset of insulin resistance, the early stage of type 2 diabetes.

Therefore, by the change to a healthy diet that reduces the intake of total fat (saturated fatty acids in particular) and increases intake of dietary fiber by consuming more vegetables and fruits and whole grain cereal products, diabetes is preventable.

Dr. Matti Uusitupa, MD, in the article of "Lifestyles Matter in the Prevention of Type 2 Diabetes" quoted, "In a Swedish uncontrolled study shown that an increase in physical activity and moderate weight loss reduced the incidence of type 2 diabetes by 50% in middle-aged men with IGT" and

"In a Chinese study of IGT patients, 6-year interventions with diet, physical activity, and diet plus physical activity resulted in an approximate 30–40% reduction in diabetes risk in both normal weight and overweight persons".

Eggplant is a species of S. melongena, belonging to the family Solanaceae and native to India, cultivated in southern and eastern Asia since prehistory.

The vegetable is famous with its deep purple and the best eggplant can be found from August through October when it is in the season. While it's generally thought of as a vegetable, eggplant is actually a fruit.

Chemical constituents
The vegetable chemical compounds containing include sterols (i.e. typical plant sterols, androstane, pregnane and cholestane derivatives, steroidal alkaloids, and sapogenins), phytosterols, triterpenes, δ-amyrin, Chlorogenic acid, Nasunin, and other Polyphenolic compounds.

In the concerns of the wide spread of type 2 diabetes among American, researchers launched an investigation to examine the National Diabetes Education Program of NIH, Mayo Clinic and American Diabetes Association recommendation of eggplant-based diet as a choice for management of type 2 diabetes.

Therecommendation is based on the rationale is the high fiber and low soluble carbohydrate content of eggplant.

Application of phenolic-enriched extracts of eggplant showed a moderate free radical scavenging-linked antioxidant activity and high alpha-glucosidase inhibition by preventing the glucosidase in breaking down starch and disaccharides to glucose and moderate to high angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibition activity in the prevention of β-cell dysfunction and apoptosis occurring in type 2diabetes.

By inhibiting these enzymes researchers suggested that intake of eggplant should provide a strong biochemical basis for management of type 2 diabetes by controlling glucose absorption.

Dr.Kwon YI, the lead author said, "phenolic antioxidant-enriched dietary strategy also has the potential to reduce hyperglycemia-induced pathogenesis linked to cellular oxidation stress".

Further analysis the phenolic antioxidant in the eggplant, researchers conducted an experiment on the member chlorogenic acids (CGAs) on chronic diseases including diabetes, by searching the database of online medical literature.

* The biological properties of CGA in addition to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects was found in some studies.

* CGA was found to exert pivotal roles on glucose and lipid metabolism regulation and on the related disorders, e.g. diabetes, cardiovascular disease (CVD), obesity, cancer, and hepatic steatosis.

* CGA demonstrated a wide range of potential health benefits, including its anti-diabetic, anti-carcinogenic, anti-inflammatory and anti-obesity impacts, may provide a non-pharmacological and non-invasive approach.

Taken altogether, eggplant processed a high amount of phenolic compound may be considered a functional vegetable in the prevention of type 2 diabetes and an adjunct therapy combined with primary medicine for the treatment of the disease.

White Button Mushroom, The Potential Anti Colon Cancer Functional Food, Scientists Say

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found an edible mushroom with the potential in reducing risk and treatment of colon cancer, some scientists suggested.

Primary colon cancer is a medical condition characterized the cell growth regularly that starts on the surface of the inner lining tissue of the colon.

After proliferating to the advanced stage, the cancerous cells can dispatch from the original site to infect other healthy tissue and organs far the way from the colon.

The exact causes of colon cancer are unknown. As of today, researchers still wonder, why people with the same health condition, family history, and diet, some are susceptible to the onset of the disease while others do not.

According to the statistic, colorectal cancer(cancer that starts in the colon or rectum) is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer and the second leading cause of cancer death in men and women combined in the United States. About 71% of cases arise in the colon and about 29% in the rectum.

Dr. Milly Ryan-Harshman, in the study of Diet and colorectal cancer, suggested, "Whether red meat is a culprit in causing CRC remains unanswered, although any effect it might have is likely moderate and related to processing or cooking"

"The effect of dietary fiber on risk of CRC has also been difficult to determine because fiber intake is generally low. Evidence that folic acid, calcium, and vitamin D reduce the risk of CRC is stronger"

" In particular, recent research indicates that calcium and vitamin D might act together, rather than separately, to reduce the risk of colorectal adenomas. There might also be an interaction between low folate levels and high alcohol consumption and CRC".

These result indicated a reduced intake of red meat, increase intake of nutrients from the fruits and vegetable including folic calcium and vitamin D are associated with the substantially reduced risk of colon cancer.

However, in the study conducted by the team lead by Dr. Dana-Farber, Cancer Center oncologist Jeffrey Meyerhardt, MD appeared in the Aug. 15 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association, the Western diet not only associate to the colon cancer risk but also elevate the risk of recurrent colon cancer in colon cancer patients.

Mushroom is a standard name of white button mushroom, the fleshy, spore-bearing fruiting body of a fungus produced above ground on soil or on its food source,

It is a genus A. Muscaria and belong to the family Amanitaceae and has been cultivated in many cultures all over the world for foods and health benefits.

Chemical constituents of white button mushroom include
Astraodorol, Psilocybin, Lectin, adustin, ribonuclease, nicotine, 2-hydroxy-4-methoxy-6-methylbenzoic acid, orsellinic acid, melleolide, ergosterol, genistein, daidzein, daucosterol, genistin, uracil and D-mannitol(a).

Intake of dietary supplementation with Se-enriched white button mushroom can reduce the production of antioxidant produced by the colon tumor by up-regulating the integrity of cell mRNA expression levels.
Se-enriched white button mushroom inhibited the colon cancer cell by stimulating the production of GPx-1 and 2 and anti-antioxidant enzyme activity.
Selenise white button mushroom can positively increase GPx-1 and GPx-2 gene expression and GPx-1 enzyme activity in rat colon cells in the protection of cell DNA alternation due to overexpression free radicals, Dr. Maseko T, the leader in the team at the The University of Melbourne suggested at the final report.

The study was published on United States National Library of Medicine (NLM).

Furthermore, in the reassessment of the 2 epidemiological studies that demonstrated an inverse correlation between mushroom intake and the risk of cancer, researchers launched an investigation to evaluate whether white button mushroom affects the growth of breast and colon cancer cells.

Application of white button mushroom suppressed proliferation of colon cancer (HT-29, HCT-116) cells, without affecting proliferation of epithelial mammary MCF-10A and normal colon FHC cells.

The inhibition of cell proliferation by the mushroom was associated with the cell cycle arrest at the G0/G1 phase in HT-29 cells.

White button mushroom was also found to up-regulated expression of p21 in the induction of apoptosis and inhibited Rb phosphorylation, a tumor suppressor protein in HT-29 cells,

The finding confirmed the results from the 2 epidemiological studies that white button mushroom process anti-colon cancer possibility.

Taken all together, dietary white button mushroom intake daily and regularly may have a significant effect in the prevention colon and combined with the primary therapy in the treatment of colon cancer

Bioactive Compound Allicin, the Best in Normalizing High Blood Pressure

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a natural bioactive ingredient for the prevention and treatment of hypertension with no side effects, according to the studies.

Hypertension is a medical condition characterized by abnormally high blood pressure.

Acute high blood pressure is a rise of high blood pressure caused by sudden stress or physical activity in a short-term that will eventually fall back to the normal levels.

Chronic hypertension is a persistence if elevated high blood pressure which cannot be decreased without medication.

Chronic hypertension is one of the members of the cluster of conditions associated with metabolic syndrome and a major cause of cardiovascular disease.

Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps out blood.

Some researchers suggested that hypertension may be caused by certain medical conditions, such as kidney disease, however, the cause of the syndrome is more likely as a result of an unhealthy lifestyle.
Blood pressure medications have undoubtedly prevented many deaths from heart disease in the past 30 years, but they have many side effects.

Therefore, if you are currently taking medicine for the treatment of hypertension, please make sure you know all side effects for preventive measure.

Dr. Beilin LJ, at the University Department of Medicine, and West Australian Heart Research Institute in the examine the lifestyle risk of hypertension wrote, High salt intakes remain a major contributor to hypertension, especially when potassium intake is low. Smoking has a dominant effect in increasing cardiovascular risk in hypertensives ".

And, "Clustering of risk factors is often associated with clustering of unhealthy lifestyle characteristics and both are most prominent in lower socio-economic groups and in Developing Countries adopting a more sedentary lifestyle and Western diet patterns".

This statement clearly suggested that making changes to lifestyle, maintaining ideal weight and diet with low salt, you could do just fine without the drugs.

Allicin is phytochemical containing sulfur in the class of organosulfur compound, found abundantly in onion and garlic.

On finding a natural compound for the prevention and treatment of high blood pressure, one of a major condition associated with the onset of cardiovascular disease, researchers examined the antihypertensive phytochemical allicin isolated from garlic.

The study included nine patients with rather severe hypertension (diastolic blood pressure > or = 115 mm Hg).

Administrated garlic preparation including 1.3% allicin at a large dose (2400 mg) showed a sitting blood pressure fell 7/16 (+/- 3/2 SD) mm Hg at peak effect approximately 5 hours after the dose.

From 5-14 hours after the dose, the preparation significantly decreased the diastolic blood pressure with no side effects.

Dr. McMahon FG, the lead scientist said, "Our results indicate that this garlic preparation can reduce blood pressure", after taking into account other factors.

Furthermore, in a total of 84 men with mild or moderate arterial hypertension, researchers compared the antihypertensive effects of time-released garlic powder tablets (Allicor) with that of regular garlic pills (Kwai)in a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial with an active control arm.

After an 8-week placebo treatment run-in phase, patients were randomized either to 600 mg Allicor (n=30) or to placebo (n=20) daily for 8 weeks and In addition, in the open-label branch, patients received either 2400 mg Allicor daily (n=18) or 900 mg Kwai daily (n=16).

Allicor treatment at a dose of t600 mg daily showed a decrease of both systolic and diastolic blood pressures by 7.0 mm Hg (95% confidence interval (95% CI): 5.3-8.7) and 3.8 mm Hg (95% CI: 2.7-4.8), respectively.

However, Increasing the Allicor dosage to 2400 mg daily did not provide any additional benefit.

Treatment with Kwai exerted a similar effect in decreasing systolic blood pressure (5.4 mm Hg, 95% CI: 1.9-8.8) as those of Allicor, but no decrease in diastolic blood pressure.

The results clearly indicated that Allicor may process the prolonged action that was found in the Kwai treatment group.

Dr. Sobenin IA, the lead scientists wrote in the final report, "time-released garlic powder tablets are more effective for the treatment of mild and moderate arterial hypertension than are regular garlic supplements".

Taken altogether,  allicin, a bioactive compound processed antihypertensive property may be used for the prevention and treatment of high blood pressure, pending to the validation of a large sample size and multicenter study.
