Beta-Sitosterol, A Potential Adjunct Therapy for the Treatment of Liver Cancer

By Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is a class of chronic diseases associated with irregular cell growth in the tissues of the affected organ.

The liver is the largest internal organ located in the upper right portion of the abdomen, beneath your diaphragm and above your stomach.

The liver not only plays a critical role to filter the blood coming from the intestine before passing them to other parts of the body but also protects our body against toxin by detoxifying chemicals and metabolizes drugs.

Furthermore, the liver produces bile that not only aids the digestive function in food absorption but also builds strong cell membranes, produces vitamin D and steroid hormone.

Liver cancer is a medical condition characterized by cell growth irregularly in the liver tissue.

The causes of liver cancer are associated with the alternation of cells DNA which normally begins in the cells on the surface of the inner lining.

According to the statistics provided by the Canadian Cancer Society, every year, approximately, 1,900 men and 580 women are diagnosed with liver cancer, causing the death of 950 men and 270 women.

In 2017, 2,500 Canadians were diagnosed with liver cancer and 1,200 Canadians died from liver cancer.

Compared to the early stage of other cancer, the 5 years survival rate in the early stage diagnosis is only 31% and 43% of people with liver cancer diagnosed at stage 0 and 1.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a common form of primary liver cancer.

The most common symptoms of liver cancer are abdominal pain, tenderness, easy bruising or bleeding, enlarged abdomen, jaundice, severe pain, particularly in the later stage and drowsiness and confusion accompanied by the general symptoms shared by other types of cancer.

Beta-Sitosterol is a phytochemical in the class of Phytosterols, belongings to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in avocados, rice bran, wheat germ, corn oils, fennel, peanuts, soybeans, hawthorn, basil, buckwheat. etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the prevention and treatment of cancer, researchers examined the interaction of soybean-derived sterol glucoside (SG) in enhancing the beta-sitosterol glucoside (Sit-G) effects on human hepatoblastoma cell line HepG2.

According to the experimental analysis,
* The association of FITC-dextran 4400 (FD-4) activity increased by Sit-G with the cells, depending on the incubation time and Sit-G concentrations.

* Sit-G showed a higher affinity with HepG2 cells than HeLa cells.

Furthermore, there is a significant positive correlation between Sit-G and FD-4 association with the tested cells, evidenced by Sit-G in enhancing the drug penetration by distribution in cell membranes.

Taken altogether, beta-Sitosterol compared with soybean-derived sterol glucoside (SG)may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of liver cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of beta-Sitosterol in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Pungent Spice Onion Processes Anti Hypertension Property, Researchers Say

By Kyle J. Norton

High blood pressure, a member of the cluster of metabolic syndrome associated with the risk of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes is a medical condition characterized by elevated blood pressure in the arteries.

Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps out blood.

More precisely in high blood pressure patients, the heart has to work harder to circulate blood to the body needs. Long-term elevated blood pressure raises the pressure of the heart, has been found to damage the heart tissue, leading to the risk of cardiovascular disease.

According to the statistics provided by the CDC, approximately 54% of adults in the US are living with high blood pressure and half of that have an uncontrol condition.

In the US, high blood pressure is a major cause of heart disease and stroke and a leading cause of death.

Most patients with high blood pressure are asymptomatic. However, over time, elevated high blood pressure can induce symptoms of severe headache, fatigue or confusion, vision problems. chest pain difficulty breathing accompanied by symptoms of the abnormal heartbeat

The most prevalent factors associated with high blood pressure found in patients are tobacco or excessive alcohol drinking, chronic medical conditions such as kidney disease, diabetes, and sleep apnea.

Some researchers in the investigation of the correlation of diet in the risk of hypertension in pregnancy wrote, " a diet rich in vegetables and fish decreased the odds of developing gestational hypertension by 14% (5491/39,362 women developed hypertension) and pre-eclampsia by 21% (1168/54,778 women developed pre-eclampsia) ".

And, "Meanwhile, a Western diet increased the odds of developing gestational hypertension by 18% (5491/39,362 women developed hypertension) and pre-eclampsia by 40% (1168/54,778 women developed pre-eclampsia)".

In other words, by following a healthy diet and moderate exercise, high blood pressure is preventable.

The onion is a plant in the genus Allium, belonging to the family Alliaceae, a close relation of garlic. It is often called the "king of vegetables" because of its pungent taste and found in a large number of recipes and preparations spanning almost the totality of the world's cultures.

Depending on the variety, an onion can be sharp, spicy, tangy, pungent, mild, or sweet.

With an aim to find a potent ingredient for the prevention of heart disease, researchers examined the effects of quercetin, a bioactive compound found in onion supplementation in reducing blood pressure in hypertensive rodents.

The randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover study included men and women diagnosed with prehypertension (n = 19) and stage 1 hypertension (n = 22) who received either 730 mg quercetin/d for 28 days or placebo.

Based on the tested differentiation,
* Both quercetin and placebo did not alter the blood pressure in prehypertensive patients.

* Quercetin exerted a strong effect on the reductions of systolic (-7 +/- 2 mm Hg), diastolic (-5 +/- 2 mm Hg), and mean arterial pressures (-5 +/- 2 mm Hg) in stage 1 hypertensive patient compared to placebo.

* However, quercetin showed no effect on oxidative stress, according to the measurement of the plasma and urine.

The results strongly suggested that quercetin supplementation lowers blood pressure, depending on the reading of the blood pressure, without alternating the oxidative stress in the arteries.

Collectively, researchers wrote, "These data are the first to our knowledge to show that quercetin supplementation reduces blood pressure in hypertensive subjects. Contrary to animal-based studies, there was no quercetin-evoked reduction in systemic markers of oxidative stress".

Taken altogether, onion processed a higher amount of quercetin may be considered a remedy for the treatment of hypertension, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Indian Ginseng Ashwagandha Enhances Muscle Mass and Strength In Exercise, According to Human Studies

By Kyle J. Norton

The Muscle is a soft tissue in the body containing protein filaments of actin and myosin that slide past one another, with a function to produce force and motion.

In other words, muscle contraction and expansion that changes both the length and the shape allow us to move and lift.

Muscle mass is the calculation of the weight of the muscles in the body in kilograms or pounds. However, other factors may also interfere with the above calculation including height, ethnicity, and fitness level.

Increased muscle mass is associated with lower fat accumulation and the ability to burn calories/energy.

Some researchers suggested, by boosting your muscle mass, you will also improve your health, including* Boosts your metabolism. Dr. Alexandra C. McPherron, the lead scientist said, "increasing skeletal muscle mass by inhibiting signaling of myostatin, a transforming growth factor β (TGFβ) family member that negatively regulates muscle growth, prevents the development of diabetes in a mouse model of lipodystrophy. Muscle-specific myostatin inhibition also prevented hyperphagia suggesting muscle may regulate food intake".

In other words, increasing muscle mass improves your body's metabolism.

* Improves Bone Mass. Dr. Colletti LAand colleagues said, "additional evidence that muscle-building exercise is associated with increases in BMD at weight-bearing sites but not at on weight-bearing sites".

* Reduces fat accumulation. Dr. Silva TR, the lead scientist wrote, "Skeletal muscle mass index (SMI) was positively correlated with physical activity (r = 0.205, P = 0.038) and protein intake (r = 0.334, P = 0.001), and negatively correlated with waist circumference (r = -0.505, P < 0.001) and %body fat (r = 0.808, P < 0.001)".

Ashwagandha also is known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean. The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered as anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.

On finding a potent anti-aging compound, researchers examined the effects of ashwagandha root extract on muscle mass and strength in healthy young men engaged in resistance training.

The randomized, prospective, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical study included 57 young male subjects (18-50 years old) with little experience in resistance training randomized into treatment received 300 mg of ashwagandha root extract twice daily, (29 subjects) and placebo, consumed starch placebos (28 subjects) groups.

Besides baseline measurements, both groups also underwent resistance training for 8 weeks with measurements repeated at the end of week 8.

Based on the results of measurement of the participants in both groups, compared to placebo, the treatment group showed significantly greater increases i
* In muscle strength on the bench-press exercise (Placebo: 26.4 kg vs. Ashwagandha: 46.0 kg)

* In the leg-extension exercise (Placebo: 9.8 kg) vs. Ashwagandha: 14.5 kg)

* In muscle size increase at the arms (Placebo: 5.3 cm(2) vs. Ashwagandha: 8.6 cm(2))

* In chest (Placebo: 1.4 cm vs. Ashwagandha: 3.3 cm).

Furthermore, Ashwagandha treated group also had a significantly greater reduction of exercise-induced muscle damage.

Moreover, Ashwagandha treated group also showed a significantly greater increase in testosterone level (Placebo: 18.0 ng/dL Ashwagandha: 96.2 ng/dL)

More importantly, there was a significantly greater decrease in body fat percentage in the treatment group compared to placebo (Placebo: 1.5% vs. Ashwagandha: 3.5%).

Based on the finding, researchers wrote, "ashwagandha supplementation is associated with significant increases in muscle mass and strength and suggests that ashwagandha supplementation may be useful in conjunction with a resistance training program".

Taken altogether, Ashwagandha may be used as a supplement for the improvement of muscle mass and strength in the resistance training program, pending the results from the large sample size and multicenter study

Broccoli Sprout, the Detoxified Functional Food

By Kyle J. Norton

Liver, kidney, and skin are 3 major and vital organs that protect our body against toxins accumulation.

Everyday toxins are removed by these organs to maintain cell and tissue integrity and viability. So the body can perform its function in an optimized form.

If one of these organs starts to malfunction, others must take the toxins and remove them.

In cases of our body cannot completely remove all the toxins, toxins will be accumulated in the organs and tissue, leading to the weakening of organs and tissue function in the induction of chronic ailments.

Herbal medicine has been used to tonify and eliminate toxins from our body over thousands of years, according to Dr. Edward Group, one of the best natural detox methods is a six or seven days cleanse using distilled water, organic, raw apple cider vinegar, aloe vera, Oxy-Powder, and a probiotic supplement.

In fact, the herbal selection is so complex and professional, depending on the experience and preference of practitioners. Completely different methods used compared to conventional medicine, treatment of one drug for all. In herbal medicine, the same disease of 2 persons may be treated with different formula and different diseases may be treated with the same formula.

Some researchers suggested that escalating consumption of fat and sugar in Western countries is associated with parallelly in an increased incidence of cardiovascular disease during the latter 20th century.

Also, according to the report in The American Journal of Pathology and studied mice module, Western diet altered the bile acid profile and elevated liver inflammation as well as promoted other Western-pattern diet-related diseases, including non-alcohol fatty liver disease, metabolic syndrome and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis with liver fibrosis.

Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belongings to the family Brassicaceae. The vegetable has large flower heads, usually green in color and the mass of flower heads is surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant on the continent of Europe.

On finding a potential plant that process detoxified activity researchers compared the effects of
broccoli sprout-derived beverage providing daily doses of 600 μmol glucoraphanin and 40 μmol sulforaphane in a 12-week randomized clinical trial.

A total of 291 participants were recruited from the rural He-He Township, Qidong, in the Yangtze River delta region of China, an area characterized by exposures to substantial levels of airborne pollutants to the study.

The exposure of air pollution in the selected area has been found to induce lung cancer and cardiopulmonary diseases.

Based on the results of the experiment, the tested broccoli sprout beverage exerted a strong effect in increasing the levels of excretion of the glutathione-derived conjugates of benzene (61%), acrolein (23%), but not crotonaldehyde, compared to placebo.

Interestingly, participants who were GSTT1-positive than in the null genotype showed a higher excretion of the benzene-derived mercapturic acid after taking the beverage compared to those who do not have the gene.

More importantly, levels of sulforaphane metabolites in urine indicated that bioavailability did not decline during the 12-week daily dosing period

Collectively, researchers said, "intervention with broccoli sprouts enhances the detoxication of some airborne pollutants and may provide a frugal means to attenuate their associated long-term health risks".

Taken altogether, broccoli sprout may be considered a detoxified remedy, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Tocopherols, the Anti Cardiovascular Diseases (CVD) Antioxidants

By Kyle J. Norton

The heart formed part of the circulatory system is a muscular organ that pumps blood through the blood vessels to nourish the body tissues and organs.

Most cases of heart dysfunction are associated with the reduced function of the heart muscle, leading to reduce blood flow that facilitates heart failure and the backup of blood into the lungs or rest of the body.

According to the statistics provided by the US government, heart disease is a leading cause of death in the US. Over 600,000 died of heart disease, every year including 370,000 people died of coronary heart disease (CHD), accounting for 1 in 4 deaths.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a group of conditions associated with the heart and blood vessels.

Heart disease is a class of diseases associated with interruption of blood flow in the blood vessel or damage of the heart tissue, including coronary artery diseases (CAD) such as angina and myocardial infarction.

Coronary heart disease (CHD) is the most common type of heart disease, that kills over 370,000 people annually.

The causes of cardiovascular diseases are associated with the accumulation of plaques in the arteries, impeding the blood flow which carries the nutrients and oxygen to the heart, causing damage to the heart tissue and reduced function of the arteries.

Believe it or not, women are 4 times more likely to die from heart disease than breast cancer and 2/3 of women are not aware of heart disease risk in them, according to the Jean Hailes for Women Health in the article cardiovascular health.

Tocopherols are phytochemicals of which many have vitamin E activity, belongings to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in butter, egg yolk, milk fat, some vegetable, and seed or nut oils, etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of chronic diseases associated with inflammation, researchers examined the effects of α‐tocopherol on CVD.

Dietary antioxidant supplementation in humans and α‐tocopherol supplementation (1600 mg/d) caused greater protection of LDL from oxidation in vitro assays.

α‐tocopherol would reduce atherosclerosis‐related events without adverse effects.

Patients who took α‐tocopherol showed a decrease of LDLoxidation by 50%.

Treatment with α‐tocopherol (400–800 mg/d) reduced the risk of nonfatal MI in patients with angiographically proven coronary atherosclerosis.

Additionally, the  Cambridge Heart Antioxidant Study (CHAOS) in 1996, the demonstrated that α‐tocopherol (400–800 mg/d) significantly reduced the risk of nonfatal myocardial infarction (MI) in patients with angiographically proven coronary atherosclerosis;

Taken altogether, tocopherols may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of diseases related CVD, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of tocopherols in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Healthy Food Cranberry Protects the Liver Against the Onset of Inflammation, Researchers Say

By Kyle J. Norton

The liver is the largest internal organ located in the upper right portion of the abdomen, beneath your diaphragm, and above your stomach.

The liver not only plays a critical role to filter the blood coming from the intestine before passing them to other parts of the body but also protects our body against toxin by detoxifying chemicals and metabolizes drugs.

Additionally, the liver also inhibits oxidative stress by producing the antioxidant enzyme that counters the expression of free radicals in the body.

Inflammation is a natural response by the immune system to protect the body against the invasion of stimuli or foreign pathogens.

Acute inflammation is a short-term condition caused by tissue injury, leading to pain, redness, swelling, and heat in the affected area. depending on the size of the injury. Some patients with acute inflammation may also experience the symptom of loss of function.

In acute inflammation, the white blood cells on the first line of defense of the immune system after sensing the danger of an infection in the body through a message from the brain stimulate the production of platelets to cover the site of injury or damage and inflammatory cytokines to kill off all pathogens before they can cause harm to the body.

Most cases of infection are stopped at the acute phase. The wound or injury is slowly recovered.

Liver inflammation is a medical condition d with autoimmune hepatitis and hepatitis and medications, drugs, toxins, and alcohol.

Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belongings to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia. Because of its health benefits, cranberry has been cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of liver diseases associated with oxidative stress, researchers compared the effect of a polyphenol-rich cranberry extract (CBE) and high fat-fed obese C57BL/6J mice on hepatic inflammation.

0.8% CBE treatment for 10 weeks showed no change in body weight or visceral fat mass compared to high fat-fed control mice.

However, CBE exerted a significant decrease in plasma alanine aminotransferase (31%) associated with liver stress and histological severity of NAFLD by a 33% decrease in the area and a 29% decrease in lipid droplet size, compared to high fat-fed mice.

Hepatic protein levels of tumor necrosis factor-alpha and C-C chemokine ligand 2, hepatic mRNA levels of toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4,) and nuclear factorκ B (NFκB), associated with the inflammation were also reduced by 28%, 19%, 63%, and 24% and respectively, following CBE supplementation.

Furthermore, the genes related to the inflammasome of the nucleotide-binding domain, leucine-rich-containing family, pyrin domain-containing-3 also were decreased by injection of CBE supplementation.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "CBE reduced... hepatic inflammation in high fat-fed obese C57BL/6J mice"

And "These effects appear to be related to mitigation of TLR4-NFκB related signaling"

Taken altogether, cranberry may be considered a remedy for the treatment and management of liver inflammation, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Phytochemical Betaxanthins Isolated From Beetroot May Be Used for Reducing the Risk and Treatment of Dyslipidemia-Related Diseases

By Kyle J. Norton

Fat including cholesterol and triglycerides consists of hydrocarbon molecules.

Hyperlipidemia is a medical condition characterized by abnormally high levels of cholesterol in the bloodstream.

Overexpression of cholesterol levels in the bloodstream has been linked to plaque accumulation on the arterial walls, a major cause of some forms of heart disease and stroke.

Untreated high blood cholesterol has been found to induce serious complications including carotid artery disease, coronary heart disease, peripheral artery disease, and stroke.

Dr, Yagi K, at the Institute of Applied Biochemistry in the analysis of the lipid peroxides and human diseases, said, "The lipid peroxidation (LPO) products are highly reactive and display marked biological effects, which, depending upon their concentration, cause selective alterations in cell signaling, protein and DNA damage, and cytotoxicity"

And. "Increased formation of lipid peroxides and aldehydes has been observed in atherosclerosis, ischemia-reperfusion, heart failure, Alzheimer’s disease, rheumatic arthritis, cancer, and other immunological disorders".

Cholesterol is the type of fat produced by the liver or from fat intake playing a critical role in the building of strong cell walls, production of vitamin D and steroid hormones, and bile acid to aid digestion in the small intestine.

Cholesterol produced by the liver in a healthy individual is returned to the liver by high-density lipoprotein (HDL).

The healthy ratio of HDL/LDL cholesterol is any number that is less than 1/4.

On the other hand, triglyceride is fat in the blood that comes from the outside source used by the body to convert to energy.

Triglyceride is stored in the fat cells used to produce energy between meals and in the case when food is scarce.

Compared to cholesterol, triglycerides in high levels also associated with the risk of heart disease, particularly in people with high levels of LDL and low levels of HDL.

Evolutionally, fat accumulation is considered a defense mechanism in the human body where excess fat is stored when food is plentiful and release to produce energy when food is scarce.

This defense mechanism has become deadly in Western countries where goods are always plentiful, leading to overweight and obesity in the induction of the onset of various types of chronic disease.

Betaxanthins are Phytochemicals in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments, belonging to the group of Betalains, found abundantly in beets, Sicilian prickly pear, etc.

On finding a potent ingredient for the treatment of heart diseases, researchers investigated the effects of betaxanthin on dyslipidemia-related diseases.

Application of betalains, consisting of betacyanins and betaxanthins is not only non-toxic but could also prove to be a promising alternative to supplement therapies in oxidative stress-, inflammation-, associated with the risk of dyslipidemia-related diseases.

Furthermore, betalains are safe, easy accessibility, low price, biodegradability, and potentially advantageous biological effects on health and can be used in food manufacturing and related industries that could pave the way to overcome current concerns over the health risks of artificial colors.

Taken altogether, betaxanthins found abundantly in betalains may be used for the prevention and treatment of dyslipidemia-related diseases, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
