Broccoli Kills Non‑Small Cell Lung Cancer Cells in Vitro

By Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is a class of disease characterized by cell growth disorderly and uncontrollably in the tissues and organs.

The lung is a vital organ in humans, located near the backbone on either side of the heart with functions of inhaling oxygen from the air then transporting them to the bloodstream to nourish the body cells' need and exhaling carbon dioxide from the bloodstream.

Lung cancer is a medical condition characterized by abnormal growth of the cells in the lung's tissue.

The most common form of primary lung cancers is derived from epithelial cells.

According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, in the US, lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths.

In 2007, lung cancer causes the death of 158,683 people, including 88,329 men and 70,354 women.

Non-small cell lung cancer, the most common type of lung cancer grown and spread methodically and predictably, includes
* Squamous-cell carcinoma often found in an outer area of the lung.

*Large-cell carcinoma found in the center of the lung by an air tube.

* Adenocarcinoma found in any part of the lung.

Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belong to the family Brassicaceae. The veggie has large flower heads, usually green in color and the mass of flower heads surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant on the continent of Europe.

On finding a potential plant that processes anticarcinogenic activity, researchers examined the chemotherapeutic and anti‑cancerogenic capacities of SFN in non‑small cell lung cancer cell lines.

In vitro, according to the results of the non‑small cell lung cancer cell line H1299 was treated with increasing concentrations of SFN (5, 10 and 15 µM) for two days,
* SFN‑induced cell cycle arrest was associated with a decrease in cyclin B1 expression in cell cycle regulation.

* Non-small lung cancer cells treated with SFN also induced the higher levels of cyclin D1 and cyclin K in the induction of cell cycle arrest or apoptosis.

In other words, SFN induced cancer cell apoptosis, cell cycle and expression of selected cell cycle‑associated proteins Cyclin B1, cyclin D1 and cyclin K.

Taken altogether, broccoli processed a high amount of SFN may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of non‑small cell lung cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Serum of Tocopherols Is Associated with Reduced Risk of Oral Cancer

By Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is a class of diseases in which a group of cells growing and multiplying disorderly and uncontrollably in our body.

Most cases of cancer begin in the cells on the surface of the inner lining tissues of the organ or gland. At the early stage, most cancers are asymptomatic.

However, at the advanced stage, most cancers not can induce common symptoms such as gastrointestinal discomforts, unintended weight loss, loss of appetite and fatigue but also localized symptoms depending on the affected tissues and organs.

Mouth/oral cancer is a medical condition associated with the irregular cell growth on the tissue of the mouth caused by genetic alteration of the cell DNA.

Most cases of mouth cancer start in the flat, thin cells (squamous cells) of the inner lining tissue that line the lips and the inside of the mouth.

According to the statistics provided by the American cancer society, in 2018, approximately, over 50,000 people will get oral cavity or oropharyngeal cancer. An estimated over 10,000 people will die of these cancers.in the United States.

The exact causes of mouth cancer are unknown. However, the increase in age, gender, exposure to radioactive, long-term use of tobacco use and excessive alcohol drinking, viral infection and genetic mutation are the most common prevalent risk factors found in people with mouth cancer.

Risk factors associated with the onset of mouth cancer are
* Smoking
In the studies of studies, Cancer Prevention Study (CPS) I and II, sponsored by the American Cancer Society (ACS), researchers found that the mortality risk for oral cancer in cigarette smokers is substantially greater than that observed among life long never smokers.

* Alcohol drinking
Alcohol drinking is known to promote oral cancer. Oral cancer risk increases if a person is both a heavy smoker and drinker.

* Chewing tobacco
Maybe as a result of irritation of the mucous membranes of the mouth from chemicals in the tobacco.

* Chewing betel nut
May be caused by a chemical compound which irritates the mucous membranes of the mouth
* Age
Most cases of oral cancer are diagnosed at ages of over the fifties.

Tocopherols are phytochemicals of which many have vitamin E activity, belonging to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in butter, egg yolk, milk fat, some vegetable, and seed or nut oils, etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of chronic diseases, researchers investigated associations between retinol, α-tocopherol, and β-carotene with the risk of oral cancer.

The comparative cross-sectional study included a total of 240 involving oral cancer patients and healthy individuals matched cases and controls where subjects were selected from the Malaysian Oral Cancer Database and Tissue Bank System (MOCDTBS).

According to the analysis,
* Serum levels of retinol and α-tocopherol among cases (0.177±0.081, 1.649±1.670μg/ml) were significantly lower than in controls (0.264±0.137, 3.225±2.054μg/ml) (p<0.005) compared to treatment group.

* Serum level of β-carotene among cases (0.106±0.159 μg/ml) were lower compared to controls (0.134±0.131μg/ml)

These results suggested that high serum levels of retinol (OR=0.501, 95% CI=0.254-0.992, p<0.05) and α-tocopherol (OR=0.184, 95% CI=0.091-0.370, p<0.05) was significantly related to lower risk of oral cancer.

After talking about other factors into account, researchers said, "High serum levels of retinol and α-tocopherol confer protection against oral cancer risk".

Taken altogether, tocopherols may be considered an adjunct therapy in the treatment of oral cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of tocopherols in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Dandelion(Taraxacum officinale) Inhibits Fatigue and Modulates the immunological parameters

By Kyle J. Norton

The immune system is a system of biological structures and processes within an organism that protects against disease by identifying and killing pathogens, including bacteria, viruses, parasites, etc. and tumor cells, including irregular cells growth, cancer cells to keep us healthy.

In most cases, the immune system does a great job of keeping people healthy and preventing infections. But sometimes problems with the immune system can lead to illness and infection.

However, during the process of their functions, they may induce the production of free radicals and a chain of free radicals that can be harmful to our bodies.

The immune system has 2 functional divisions: the innate and the acquired. Both involve various blood-borne factors and cells.

Many immunological parameters, including genetics, gender, age, nutrient status, and gut flora have been found to affect the immune responses.

People with a significantly below "normal" immune function are more susceptible to infectious agents and exhibit increased infectious morbidity and mortality.

Fatigue is the condition of feeling very tired, weary or sleepy. Most cases of fatigue are a result of insufficient sleep, prolonged mental or physical work, or extended periods of stress or anxiety.

However, people who carry repetitive tasks can intensify feelings of fatigue.

Fatigue can be described as either acute or chronic.

Unlike acute fatigue that can be recovered in a short time, chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is a medical disorder which cannot be explained by an underlying medical condition, characterized by persistently extreme fatigue that never goes away regardless of treatment.for at least 6 months.

The exact causes of chronic fatigue syndrome are unknown.

Dandelion is a herbaceous perennial plant, genus Taraxacum, belongings to the family Asteraceae, native to temperate regions of the world. It has been used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat gout, eczema, acne, gall bladder, kidney, liver and urinary disorders, hypoglycemia, dyspepsia with constipation, edema, blood pressure, and heart weakness, chronic joint, skin diseases, etc.

On finding a natural ingredient that improves energy levels and health. scientists examined the anti-fatigue and immune-enhancing effects of dandelion (TO) in mice by performing a forced swimming test (FST) and in vitro by using peritoneal macrophages.

The mice induced fatigue given daily oral administration of TO (100 mg/kg), were found to decrease fatigue, FST immobility time on the tenth day.

Furthermore, TO (10 and 100 mg/kg) treatment significantly increased glucose levels, acting as an energy source and decreased muscle damage.

Moreover, TO (100 mg/kg) orally administered to mice also decreased the blood urea nitrogen levels significantly.

Additionally, in vitro by using peritoneal macrophages, TO treatment showed a significant increase of the production of NO through inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) induction involved in pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukin (IL)-12p70, and IL-10.

Taken altogether, Dandelion may be considered a remedy for the treatment of fatigue and immunological parameters, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Omega 3 Fatty Acid Reduces the Risk of Hypertension

By Kyle J. Norton

Hypertension is a condition characterized by persistent high blood pressure.

According to the American Heart Association (AHA) patients with blood pressure that higher than 130 over 80 millimeters of mercury (mmHg) is considered to have hypertension.

In the US approximately, one-third of the adults have hypertension, affecting over 77 million people in the country.

Additionally, among adults age 20 and older in the United States, in the non-Hispanic whites community, 33.4 percent of men and 30.7 percent of women are infected by the syndrome.

Hypertension is a slowly developed condition. Unless the syndrome has caused damage to the blood vessel, otherwise symptoms cannot be detected.

The cause of hypertension is a result of hardening and thickening of the arteries (atherosclerosis), due to the slow progression of plaques accumulated on the wall of the arteries.

Some researchers suggested that unhealthy dietary and lifestyle factors highlight the importance of environmental factors in the induction of hypertension onset and progression(4).

However, according to a special issue of the Journal of Human Hypertension primarily, in the concerns of dietary, lifestyle and alternative factors in the risk of hypertension and blood pressure control, focus on dietary and lifestyle factors, complementary and alternative approaches may have a strong impact in prevention and treatment of hypertension.

Therefore, increased physical activity and diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and low-fat dairy products, along with a reduction in saturated and total fat may be the best choice in exerted protective effects on blood pressure.

Omega-3 fatty acids are phytochemicals in the class of lipids, found abundantly in deepsea fisk, dark-green leafy vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, etc.

The three main components of Omega-3 fatty acids are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of heart diseases, researchers examined the Omega 3 fatty acid activity on blood pressure (BP).

In the prospective cohort study based on the data on 12 279 PHS participants (mean age: 53.0 ± 8.7 years) free of hypertension at baseline, during a mean follow-up of 15.8 years,

According to the results of the study of the fish and omega-3 fatty acid consumption assessed from a baseline semiquantitative food-frequency questionnaire,
* Fish and omega-3 fatty acid consumption was not significantly associated with incident hypertension.
* The hazard ratio (95% CI) of hypertension was 1.10 (0.93-1.30) for men who consumed at least five servings per week of fish compared with those who did not consume any fish (P for trend = 0.29).

* For the highest versus lowest quintile of omega-3 fatty acid intake, the hazard ratio of hypertension was 1.02 (0.94-1.11) (P for trend = 0.34).

* The associations did not vary by type of fish. There was also no evidence of effect modification by baseline BP, BMI, or history of hypercholesterolemia.

Moreover, researchers said, "Overall, long-term dietary intake of fish and omega-3 fatty acid was not associated with incident hypertension in a cohort of middle-aged and older US men".

Taken altogether, Omega-3 fatty acids may be considered a functional food for the prevention and of hypertension, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Angelica Promotes the Immunomodulatory Activity

By Kyle J. Norton

The immune system is the set of cells that comprise the body's defense system against diseases against antigens or infectious agents

Immunomodulatory activity is an action that improves the underactive immune function that is susceptible to the invasion of the foreign microorganism and inhibits the overactive immune system that causes autoimmune diseases.

The overactive immune system is a class of autoimmune diseases or chronic inflammatory diseases caused by the immune system attacking the body's tissue, including rheumatoid arthritis (RA), rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus,.... and multiple sclerosis.

The widespread chronic inflammatory diseases in modern society are a burden to humans because of life-long debilitating illness, increased mortality and high costs for therapy and care.

On the other hand, an underactive or weakened immune system caused by a primary immune deficiency or acquired immune deficiency.may not protect the body against foreign organisms in initiated infection.

Primary immune deficiency is an underactive immune system that is caused by genetic mutation inherited from parents.

Acquired immune deficiency is a weakened immune system caused by diseases that destroy white blood cells.

In other words, the immunomodulatory activity involved antimicrobial agents is to modulate the genes involved in immune reactions, or of the neurohormonal system which regulates immune functions and any toxic or immunotoxic effects such as allergic reactions or destruction of immune effectors, that may cause harm to the body or interfere with the body normal function.

Angelica or Dang Qui is a herb of Genus Angelica from the family Apiaceae, indigenous to China.

The herb has been used as a Queen herb in traditional Chinese medicine antispasmodic and vasodilatory agent, and to balance the hormones in women for a normal menstrual cycle and menstruation and strengthen heart, spleen, kidneys, and liver for both men and women, etc. In other words, it is used to treat gynecological ailments, fatigue, mild anemia, and high blood pressure. It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, etc.

On finding a potential herbal medicine to improve the immune functioning, researchers examined the immunomodulatory activity of four fractions of angelica (Angelica polysaccharide, oligosaccharides (Angelica oligosaccharide and Angelica sucrose) and Angelica total amino acid, named APS, AOS, AS, and TAA on murine peritoneal macrophages.

Based on the results of the analysis, Although APS exhibited the most obvious growth facilitative activity, AOS did better in the activation of H(2)O(2) release.

TAA exerted the best activation of phagocytic activity, production of NO and ICAM-1 expression.

Furthermore, the action mode of the four fractions was similar to that of LPS and the mechanism may be related to the upregulation of TLR4 mRNA. in the regulation of the immune response.

These results demonstrated that all 4 tested fractions isolated from the Radix A. Sinensis, could serve as an immunomodulator for the improvement of the immune functioning.

Taken altogether, Herbal Angelica processes immunomodulatory activity, pending to larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Broccoli Inhibits the Pancreatic Cancer Cells in Vitro

By Kyle J. Norton

Pancreatic cancer is a chronic condition characterized by cell growth irregularly in the tissues of the pancreas.

Most cases of primary pancreatic cancer start in the cell on the surface of the inner lining of the pancreatic tissue, before penetrating into the deeper layers to form a large and invasive tumor.

At the early stage, patients with pancreatic cancer may be asymptomatic. However, at the later stage, besides the common symptoms shared by all types of cancer such as unintended weight loss, loss of appetite, fatigue and gastrointestinal discomforts, patients with the condition may also experience localized symptoms such as internal bleeding and severe pain due to the oversize tumor which suppresses the nerve cells and blood vessels.

According to statistics, every year, approximately, over 55,000 adults in the United States are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, accounting for 3% of all cancers and 7% of all cancer deaths.

The survival rate of pancreatic cancer even diagnosed at a very early stage is very low compared to other types of cancer. The 5-year survival rate at stage IA pancreatic cancer is only14%.

Scientists do not know the exact causes of pancreatic cancers, but they do know several risk factors that can make a person more likely to get the disease, including the genetic and acquired genetic mutation of p16 and TP53 and KRAS, BRAF, and DPC4 (SMAD4).

Other prevalent risk factors, including long-term use of tobacco, exposure to certain chemicals, overweight, and obesity, and unpreventable risk factors of family history, gender, the increase of age and ethnicity are associated with the early onset of pancreatic cancer.

The secondary pancreas cancer has been found to be a metastasis from renal cell cancer, lung, colon and breast cancers.

Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belong to the family Brassicaceae. The veggie has large flower heads, usually green in color and the mass of flower heads surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant on the continent of Europe.

On finding a potential plant that processes anticarcinogenic activity, researchers examined the effects of sulforaphane (SF) on the pancreatic cancer cell lines.

In established cell lines and a patient tissue array (n = 96), sulforaphane inhibited the expression of miR30a-3p in the induction of cancer cell lines.

Furthermore, miR30a-3p mimics inhibited the luciferase activity of a Cx43 3'-UTR, a tumor suppression.

Moreover, miR30a-3p-overexpressing tumor xenografts had decreased tumor volume and increased gemcitabine sensitivity in pancreatic cell lines.

The study included 16 subjects randomized, into 3-phase crossover dietary trial of standard broccoli, high glucosinolate broccoli, and water.

In patient tissues, a higher expression of miR30a-3p and a lower expression of Cx43 correlated with malignancy.

Based on the evidence, researchers said, "These findings provide new knowledge and suggest sulforaphane as cotreatment for pancreatic cancer".

Taken altogether, the consequences of these results suggest that the broccoli process the potential anti-pancreatic activity, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Omega 3 Fatty Acids, A promising Anti Chronic Cerebral Hypoperfusion Remedy

By Kyle J. Norton

Chronic cerebral hypoperfusion is a medical condition associated with the small vessel diseases or atherosclerosis of multiple large vessels found mostly in people who are cognitive normal elderly and patients who have cognitive impairment.

Acute cerebral hypoperfusion has been found to induce neuronal necrosis and infarction, compared to chronic cerebral hypoperfusion that causes the apoptosis of neurons.

A neuron or nerve cell made of a cell body (also called soma), dendrites and an axon, is a cell in the nervous system that carries electrical impulses.

Neurons are core components of the brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves that play an essential role to process and transmit information.

The function of neurons can be classified into 3 types
* The sensory neurons found within the nervous system that convert external stimuli from the organism's environment into internal electrical impulses. In other words, sensory neurons are activated by sensory input from the environment, including physical input of sound, touch, heat, or light.

*The motor neurons transmit impulses from the spinal cord to skeletal and smooth muscles,. In other words, motor neurons directly control all of the muscle movements.

* The interneurons connect the motor and sensory neurons. In other words, the interneurons transfer signals between sensory and motor neurons.

Neurons are core components of the brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves that play an essential role to process and transmit information.

Cerebrovascular disease is a common cause of Alzheimer's disease (AD).

On finding a potential plant that processes neuroprotective activity researchers examined the effect of gamma-linolenic acid in the rat brain tissues after bilateral common carotid artery occlusion (BCCAO) rat model of chronic cerebral hypoperfusion.

According to the results of the analysis,
* Arachidonic acid (ARA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), dihomo-γ-linolenic acid, hydroxyeicosatetraenoic (HETE)-Ala and glycerophosphoethanolamine levels were significantly reduced in the hippocampus and cortex of animals submitted to BCCAO model when compared to control animals.

* Decanoic acid was increased after 30 days of BCCAO model.

Collectively, researchers said, "these findings indicate that lipid dynamics are altered in chronic ischemia-induced by BCCAO in rats and indicate potential biomarkers and pharmacological targets for vascular dementia (VD)".

Taken altogether, omega3 fatty acids may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of chronic cerebral hypoperfusion,, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
