Brassica Vegetables Reduce the Risk of Prostate Cancer

By Kyle J. Norton

The prostate warped around a tube (the urethra) is a gland of the male reproductive system found in front of the rectum and just below the bladder and responsible for making some of the semen that carries sperm.

The prostate gland is considered a reproductive organ in men.

Prostate cancer is a medical and chronic condition in which the cells of the prostate have become cancerous due to the alternation of the cell's DNA.

Most prostate cancers are slow-growing and enlarged prostate and prostate cancer may be detected during the Physical (rectum) exams.

Primary prostate cancer normally starts from the cell on the surface of the inner lining of the prostate tissue and gradually spreads to the deeper part of the prostate.

At the early stage, patients may not experience any symptoms, However, at the advanced stage, prostate cancer can induce symptoms of blood in the urine, frequent urination and urinary difficulty.

The cancer cells at this stage can also travel a distance away from the prostate to invade other healthy tissue and organ, leading secondary metastasis tumors.

According to the statistic, the 5-year survival rate for local and regional (stage 0 and 1) stages of prostate cancer is nearly 100%.

Believe it or not, more than 80% of prostate cancers are diagnosed in men who are 65 or older.

Therefore, men who are at higher risk of prostate cancer due to family history and increase in age and inherited gene changes should have their prostate gland checked annually.

On finding a potential plant that processes anti-cancer activity researchers examined the effects of Brassica vegetables, including mustard greens on prostate cancer risk.

According to the tested results
* Brassica vegetables exerted a strong effect on the metabolic breakdown products associated with the modulation of xenobiotic-metabolizing enzymes that protect DNA from damage.

According to the 12 published studies that analyze the relationship of Brassica vegetable intake and prostate cancer risk
* Three reported statistically significant reduced risks (P < 0.05) and one reported a borderline significantly reduced risk (P = 0.06) with high Brassica vegetable consumption.

* 6 showed a clear explanation of the prostate cancer risk involved in the consumption of Brassica vegetables.

Collectively, researchers said, " The epidemiological literature provides modest support for the hypothesis that high intakes of Brassica vegetables reduce prostate cancer risk".

Taken altogether, mustard greens may be considered a functional food for reducing the risk of prostate cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Healthy Veggie Broccoli Inhibits the Onset and Progression of Diabetic Nephropathy induced by Cisplatin

By Kyle J. Norton

Kidneys are to bean-shaped organs located below the rib cage, one on each side of your spine with a function to filter out blood and remove waste through urinary secretion.

The kidney also plays a critical in maintaining the levels of fluids in the body, by removing extra fluids to make urine.

Furthermore, the kidney also regulates electrolytes, blood pressure, maintains acid-base balance, produces hormone calcitriol, renin, and erythropoietin.

Diabetes is a chronic condition caused by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate the glucose.

In other words, diabetes occurs when cells in the pancreas dying off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol. In some cases, diabetes is also caused by allergic reactions of cells in the immune system.

Long-term unmanaged hyperglycemia can damage the part of the kidneys thus reducing the kidney function in filter waste from the blood filters, leading to 'leaky' syndrome that allows protein into your urine.

Diabetic renal inflammation is a condition associated with inflammation in the development of diabetic nephropathy.

Diabetic nephropathy (Dn) is the 3 stages of kidney change in patients with diabetes. In this stage, patients may experience symptoms of abnormally elevated urinary albumin excretion, compared to the 15 and 300 μg/min in the baseline situation.

Epidemiologically, diabetic nephropathy is also associated with cardiovascular disease and increases the mortality of diabetic patients.

Metabolic and hemodynamic alterations, oxidative stress, and activation of the renin-angiotensin system are some of the risk factors that have been found in patients with Dn.
The progression of diabetic nephropathy that leads to an increased rate in albumin excretion is higher in patients with increased blood pressure.

The condition in the advanced stage can lead to symptoms of worsening blood pressure, protein in the urine, swelling of feet, ankles, hands or eyes, increased need to urinate, loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting, fatigue and persistent itching.

In severe cases, patients may also experience symptoms of confusion or difficulty concentrating.

More importantly, if high blood pressure is left untreated, diabetic nephropathy can induce persistent proteinuria >0.5 g/ 24 h that furtherly declines the renal function with the mean fall rate being around 1 ml/min/mo.

Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belongings to the family Brassicaceae. The vegetable has large flower heads, usually green in color and the mass of flower heads is surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant on the continent of Europe.

On finding a potential plant for the treatment of kidney diseases, researchers examined the effects of Sulforaphane (SFN), a natural constituent of cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, Brussels sprouts, etc., on nephropathy.

In a rodent model of CIS-induced nephropathy, the administration of SFN
* Cisplatin triggered marked activation of stress signaling pathways and promoted cell death in the kidneys associated with attenuation of various prosurvival signaling pathways.

* Cisplatin also markedly enhanced inflammation in the kidneys.

The pretreatment of rodents with SFN demonstrated a significant attenuation of all parameters induced by the chemo drug.

Moreover, the cisplatin-induced nephropathy is associated with activation of various cell death and proinflammatory pathways to cause renal injury was also inhibited by the injection of SFN.

Taken altogether, broccoli may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of nephropathy, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Elder (Sambucus) Processes the Natural Immunomodulatory Property

By Kyle J. Norton

The immune system is the set of cells and their activity against antigens or infectious agents that comprise the body's defense system against diseases.

The immune system does a great job of keeping people healthy and preventing infections. Besides foods and nutritional supplements, herbs also play an important role in helping the immune system defend against viruses and bacteria attacks.

In normal immunity, active immunity may also be artificially acquired caused by the injection of the vaccine, a substance that contains antigen and passive immunity is an auto-response of immune system against infection through the production of antigen.

Immunomodulatory activity is an action that improves the underactive immune function that is susceptible to the invasion of the foreign microorganism and inhibits the overactive immune system that causes autoimmune diseases.

Depending on the substances that affect the immunomodulatory process, some may improve the immune function by modulating the genes involved immune responses and protect the immune system against toxins or immunotoxic effects such as abnormal allergic reactions, other such as heavy metals can induce opposite effects.

For example, curcumin (diferuloylmethane), found in the spice turmeric and processed anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and chemopreventive activities may improve the immune system in the inhibition of cancer cell proliferation and overproduction of proinflammatory cytokines by target the genes associated with programming cell death and anti-inflammatory action and involved in the induction of these immune parameters.

On the other hand, toxic chemicals such as cadmium and lead accumulated in the body can have a negative impact on the immune defense by reducing the viability of both lymphocytes and macrophages was affected by heavy metals in a dose- and time-dependent manner.

On finding a natural ingredient for the improvement of immune functioning, scientists examined the immunomodulatory effects of bioactive compounds of Sambucus.

Elder or Common Elder, is a shrub or small tree of the genus Sambucus of 30 species, belonging to the family Adoxaceae, native to the temperate-to-subtropical regions of both the Northern Hemisphere and the Southern Hemisphere.

The herb has been used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat constipation, colic, diarrhea, colds, flu, bronchial and upper-respiratory, irritation of the skin, rheumatism, etc.

According to tested analysis from orally administrated with 2.8 mg.kg-1 BW of DMBA for ten times within a month with 7,12-dimethylbenz[a] anthracene (DMBA)-treated BALB/c mouse, followed by S. javanica berries and leaves extracts for 2 weeks.

* The expression of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and interferon-gamma (IFN-ɣ) associated with the induction of inflammation were increased however after treated by S. javanica berries compared to that of leaves extracts that were significantly decreased.

* Furthermore, the DMBA-treated group showed an increase of necrosis incidence.

* Moreover, These increased was totally diminished with S. javanica extracts treatment.

Based on the results, researchers suggest, " these results suggested that S. javanica extracts have immunomodulatory activities to suppress inflammation and reduce necrosis incidence in experimental mice".

Taken altogether, Dandelion may be considered a remedy for the treatment of acute liver injury, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Topical Elecampane Inhibits the Onset of Atopic Dermatitis

By Kyle J. Norton

Dermatitis or eczema is a group of diseases characterized by the inflammation of the skin.

There is no single cause of eczema, anything that we face every day can trigger a dermatitis flare, including stress, irritants, climate change, and sweating. However, infection and allergens.are considered the most common causes of the disease.
Atopic dermatitis or eczema is an inflammatory condition associated with red and itchy skin.

Most cases of atopic dermatitis are found in children. However, adults may also get it too. Skin irritation is found more often in children compared to adults.

The causes of atopic dermatitis are unknown. Some researchers suggested that certain risk factors such as genetic preposition and abnormal function of the immune system and environment conditions may be involved in the development of the disease.

Epidemiological studies suggested that most patients with chronic atopic dermatitis also have asthma and hay fever, particularly in allergies.

Children are at a higher risk of atopic dermatitis compared to adults.

Most cases of atopic dermatitis are healed by itself or by rehydrating the skin with topical forms of petroleum jelly, such as Vaseline.

However, in serious cases, topical steroids to reduce inflammation and control itching may be prescribed. In patients with itching scratch, oral antihistamines may be recommended.

Besides red patches and itching on the affected area, patients may also experience symptoms of dry skin, small bumps containing fluids, cracked and scaly, sensitive, swollen skin due to scratching.

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of skin diseases, scientists examined the total sesquiterpene lactones isolated from Inula helenium L. (TSL-IHL) effect on atopic dermatitis (AD).
Elecampane, also known as Horse-heal (Inula helenium) is a perennial composite plant, genus nulla, belonging to Asteraceae, native to Southern Europe, and Asia.

The plant has been used in traditional and herbal medicine in treating bronchitis or emphysema, night sweats, pulmonary tuberculosis, irritating cough, catarrhal discharges, etc.

According to tested analysis,
* TSL-IHL, as well as AL and IAL, inhibited the proteins TNF-α-induced activation of pro-inflammatory cytokines NF-κB and the expression of TNF-α, IL-1, and IL-4 in HaCat cells in a dose-dependent manner in the range of 0.6-2.4 µg/ml.

* The topical application of TSL-IHL (1% W/W in emollient cream) attenuated DNCB-induced dermatitis severity and right ear swelling.

* Additionally, the serum levels of IgE produced by the immune system, TNF-α, and IFN-γ involved in the inflammatory phase in TSL-IHL-treated mice were reduced by 81.39%, 89.69%, and 87.85%, respectively.

* Moreover, the mRNA levels of IL-4, IL-5, and IL-13 associated with the inflammatory response in the back-skin lesions of TSL-IHL-treated mice were reduced by 39.21%, 40.62%, and 48.12%, respectively, compared to the untreated controls.

More precisely, TSL-IHL treatment reduced epidermis/dermis thickening and dermal inflammatory infiltration in both ear and back skins.

Based on the results, researchers suggest, "TSL-IHL inhibited the development of AD-like skin symptoms by regulating cytokine expression and may be an effective alternative therapy for AD".

Taken altogether, Dandelion may be considered a remedy for the treatment of atopic dermatitis, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Low Levels of Omega-3 Fatty Acids Are Associated with Increased Risk of Atherosclerosis

By Kyle J. Norton

Cardiovascular disease refers to heart diseases, affecting millions of people in the world.

According to statistics, over 17.7 million people died from CVDs in 2015.

The World Heart Foundation, in the investigation of CVD, suggested that CVD risk factors can be classified by
* Non-Modified risk factors such as age, ethnic background,....... and family history. The risk that can not be controlled
* Modified risk factors such as smoking, high blood cholesterol, and pressure, diabetes physical inactivity,.... and overweight. These types of risks can be controlled through a change in lifestyle and diet.

Most cases of heart diseases in the Western world are associated with atherosclerosis.

In other words, atherosclerosis is a leading cause of coronary heart disease (CHD).

According to the 2016 Heart Disease and Stroke Statistics, 15.5 million people in the USA. have CHD. The lifetime risk of developing CHD with ≥2 major risk factors is 37.5% for men and 18.3% for women.

Atherosclerosis is a medical condition caused by plaques accumulated on the wall of the arteries, leading to narrowing the arteries in transporting oxygenated blood to the heart and other parts of the body.

Depending on the blood obstruction, atherosclerosis can induce different types of heart disease and stroke.

Plaque is the make of cholesterols, calcium, and other toxic substances, including cadmium.

According to the statistics provided by Atherosclerosis Open Acess, 32% of deaths account for atherosclerosis. 13.8% prevalence is among adults of 20 years and above. In 2010, coronary heart disease mortality rate was about 60%.

Risk factors of atherosclerosis include high blood pressure and cholesterol, diabetes, being overweight or obese, an unhealthy diet, a family history of heart disease and physical inactivity, particularly smoking.

Some researchers suggested that since cholesterol makes up a big part in the plaque, an unhealthy diet with high saturated trans fat, red meat and processed meat may be the major cause of atherosclerosis.

In other words, the Western diet is one of the major culprits that cause the majority of cases of atherosclerosis.

Omega-3 fatty acids are phytochemicals in the class of lipids, found abundantly in deepsea fisk, dark-green leafy vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, etc.

The three main components of Omega-3 fatty acids are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases, researchers examined the effects of EPA and DHA on the early-onset of coronary atherosclerosis.

According to the results of 71 participant groups included 51 were below and 20 were above the 75th AS-percentile.
* A significantly lower value for EPA (0.77%[0.63; 0.97] vs. 0.93%[0.72; 1.21]; p = 0.045), DHA (4.90%[4.12; 5.57] vs. 5.50%[4.58; 6.52]; p = 0.038) and the Omega-3 Index (5.73%[4.75; 6.35] vs. 6.22%[5.46; 7.71]; p = 0.034) were seen in patients above the 75th AS-percentile was found to associated with the onset of coronary atherosclerosis.

* All other fatty acids showed no significant differences.

* In multivariable analysis, the Omega-3 Index showed a significant inverse association with early onset of CAC (OR: 0.533 (95%CI: 0.303-0.938; p = 0.029)), independent of age, gender, statin use, and creatinine level (all p > 0.05).

Collectively, researchers said, "Low levels of EPA and DHA (Omega-3 Index) are associated with early-onset coronary atherosclerosis. This finding needs to be validated in larger cohorts and might help understand the beneficial cardiovascular effects of omega-3 fatty acids".

Taken altogether, Omega-3 fatty acids found abundantly in fish oil and plant oil may be considered a functional food for the prevention of atherosclerosis, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Angelica Protects the Neurons Against the Onset of Parkinson's Disease in Vivo

By Kyle J. Norton

Neurological diseases are the medical conditions of brain disorder. Anything that involves the structural, biochemical or electrical abnormalities in the brain, spinal cord or other nerves, including brain damage are considered as neuro diseases.

The most common neurodegenerative diseases in the elderly are dementia. Depending on the brain regions that are damaged or dysfunction, dementia can be Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, and Huntington's disease.

Genetic mutation inherited from parents such as the NOTCH3 gene is the most common autosomal dominant inherited cause of stroke and vascular dementia.

Dementia is a neurodegeneration syndrome among the elderly, affecting memory, thinking, orientation, comprehension, calculation, learning capacity, language, and judgment over 47 million
of the worldwide population, mostly in the West.

Parkinson disease (PD) is a disabling, progressive condition induced symptoms of the olfactory deficit, sleep problems such as rapid eye movement behavior disorder, constipation and the more recently described male erectile dysfunction(456), due to the interruption of frontal-subcortical loops facilitated cognition and parallel the motor loop(457).

Contrary to common perception, many non-motor symptoms (NMS) also link to early onset of PD(459) and some may even predate the diagnosis of PD based on motor signs(458).

In the very early stage of PD, patients may not experience any symptoms. However, Parkinson's disease symptoms gradually worsen as the condition progresses.

As of today, researchers do not know why the neurons in the brain in some people are susceptible to gradually break down or die while others do not even they have similar health conditions and from the same family.

Epidemiologically aging, gender, long-term exposure to certain toxic chemicals and genetic deposition are some of the prevalent factors involved in the increased risk of the disease.

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, scientists examined the investigated the neuroprotective effects of the triple herbal extract DA-9805 ((Moutan cortex, Angelica dahurica root, and Bupleurum root in a 1:1:1 mixture) in experimental models of Parkinson's disease (PD) by induced neurotoxic effects on dopaminergic neurons by inhibiting mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) complex.

Angelica or Dang Qui is a herb of Genus Angelica from the family Apiaceae, indigenous to China.

The herb has been used as a Queen herb in traditional Chinese medicine antispasmodic and vasodilatory agent, and to balance the hormones in women for a normal menstrual cycle and menstruation and strengthen heart, spleen, kidneys, and liver for both men and women, etc. In other words, it is used to treat gynecological ailments, fatigue, mild anemia, and high blood pressure. It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, etc.

According to the results of the differentiation
In SH-SY5Y cells,
* DA-9805 ameliorated the suppression of tyrosine hydroxylase expression and mitochondrial damage on OXPHOS complex 1 activity,

* DA-9805 also inhibited the expression of mitochondrial membrane potential, reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, and oxygen consumption rate.

In the MPTP-induced subacute PD model mice,

* Oral administration of DA-9805 recovered dopamine content as well as bradykinesia.

* DA-9805 protected against neuronal damage in the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNpc) and striatum.

In both vitro and vivo, DA-9805 normalized the phosphorylation of AKT that that promotes survival and growth of the neurons at S473 and T308 on the insulin signaling pathway and the expression of mitochondria-related genes.

Based on the results, researchers suggest, "triple herbal extract DA-9805 showed neuroprotective effects via alleviating mitochondria damage in experimental models of PD. We propose that DA-9805 may be a suitable candidate for disease-modifying therapeutics for PD".

Taken altogether, Dandelion may be considered an antioxidant remedy for the treatment of PD, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Healthy Veggie Broccoli Inhibits the Onset of Oxidative Stress

By Kyle J. Norton

Oxidative stress is a medical condition characterized by the imbalance of the ratio of free radicals and antioxidant enzymes produced by the host tissue.

Free radicals are highly reactive molecules with an unpaired electron on the outer ring of the atom.
Due to its nature to become stable, free radicals readily to donate or steal an electron from other molecules, leading to the chain of domino's effect that can not be stopped until either the electrons are paired or inhibited by antioxidants.

This chain of reaction is the cause of oxidative stress, a condition is associated with either overexpression of free radicals or depletion of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host organs.

In some cases, this reaction also is caused long-term accumulation of toxic substances in the body, such as lead, cadmium, mercury, and arsenic.

Antioxidants are stable atom that plays a critical role in protecting the body against the attack of free radicals.

In other words, antioxidants inhibited the onset of free radical before they can cause a chain reaction in facilitating the protein, lipid and cell damage.

Antioxidants can either produced by the liver or intake from dietary sources. Under normal conditions, antioxidant enzymes produced by the body in a healthy individual are good enough to counter the bombardment of free radical attacks.

There is no single cause of oxidative stress. Some researchers suggested that a number of factors can facilitate the onset of oxidative stress, including cigarette smoke, oxidative burst from activated macrophages, particularly, the free radicals chain reaction.

Sadly, a prolonged period of oxidative stress presented in the human body can cause oxidative damage to biomolecules, (lipids, proteins, DNA) and the death of healthy cells through cytotoxicity.

Certain chronic diseases are found to be associated with oxidative stress, including atherosclerosis, cancer, diabetics, rheumatoid arthritis, post-ischemic perfusion injury, myocardial infarction, cardiovascular diseases, chronic inflammation, and stroke.

Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belongings to the family Brassicaceae. The vegetable has large flower heads, usually green in color and the mass of flower heads is surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant on the continent of Europe.

On finding a potential plant that processes anti-oxidative activity researchers examined the efficacy of sulforaphane found in broccoli in protecting alcohol-induced hepatic injury in vivo.

The study included selected male C57BL/6 mice which were orally administrated with broccoli sprout extract (BSE) containing sulforaphane [7.6, 25.2, and 50.4 mg/kg of body weight (bw)] once a day for 14 days.

On the 13th day, mice were challenged with alcohol (5 g/kg of bw) every 12 h for 3 times, which increased malondialdehyde (MDA) levels (4.44 ± 1.24 nmol/mg of protein, p < 0.01) of oxidative stress in the liver.

According to the results of the experiment, the administration of low-, medium-, and high-dose BSE markedly reversed the decrease of antioxidant capacity.

More precisely, BSE increased the levels of antioxidant enzymes such as glutathione (GSH), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), and glutathione S-transferase (GST)  in the liver, compared to control.

The efficacy in protecting the liver oxidative stress was attributed to the activation of phase 2 enzymes via nuclear erythroid-2-related factor 2 (Nrf2).

Most importantly, BSE also significantly attenuated the levels of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER)-stress-specific proteins, a defense system which protects cells from ER stress such as glucose-regulated protein 78 (GRP78), activating transcription factor 6, and protein kinase RNA (PKR)-like ER kinase (PERK),

Collectively, researchers said, "These results indicate that BSE protects the liver against alcohol challenge via upregulating antioxidant capacity and downregulating ER stress".

Taken altogether, broccoli may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
