Fermented Soy Improves Brain Blood Flow in Post-Stroke Hyperglycemia in Vivo

By Kyle J. Norton

Stroke is a medical condition in which the brain function is interrupted rapidly due to the loss of blood supply caused by the blockage of blood such as thrombosis and arterial embolism, or leakage of blood that lead to the death of brain cells.

Stroke is a condition associated with the plagues build-up in the arteries and high blood pressure.

In other words, if plagues building up in the arteries is blocking the circulation of blood in any part of the brain, causing oxygen not to be delivered to the brain, resulting in some cells in the brain to die off and are unable reproduce,

Besides cancer and heart diseases, stroke is the third leading cause of death. Approximately 1/4 of all stroke victims die as a direct result of the stroke or its complications.

According to the statistics of the Heart and Stroke Foundation, strokes kill 45% more women than men in Canada.

There are 2 types of stroke
* Ischemic stroke is the most common type of stroke accounting for almost 80% of all strokes.

* Hemorrhagic stroke occurs when a blood vessel bursts inside the brain, causing an increase of the fluid pressure on the brain and harms the brain by pressing it against the skull.

Hyperglycemia, a medical condition of abnormally high blood glucose, is a major concern, in people with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

Most cases of hyperglycemia occurred in patients who do not manage their diabetes properly.

Untreated hyperglycemia has been found to induce ketoacidosis characterized by the symptoms shortness of breath, breath that smells fruity and gastrointestinal discomforts such as nausea, vomiting, and dry mouth.

The post-stroke hyperglycemia management is the interventions associated with the management of physiological variables such as blood glucose, blood pressure, hypoxia, hydration, and temperature

Fermented soy products are diverse varieties of soy food that are made from fermented soybeans, including miso, natto, tempeh, and soy sauce.

On finding a potential plant for the neuroprotection after stroke, researchers examined the effect of chungkookjang made with Sunchang Research Center for Fermentation Microbes 100730 and 100731 strains of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens(SRCM100730; CKJ730) and SRCM100731(CKJ731) on post-stroke hyperglycemia in Mongolian gerbils.

Where the Gerbil which either was fed 4.5% cooked soybeans (CSB), CKJ730, CKJ731, or cellulose (negative-control) in 40 energy% fat diets for 3 weeks, and then had artery occlusion for 8 min and continued taking the assigned diet for 5 weeks.

According to the results of the analysis,
* CKJ730 and CKJ731 had thrombolytic activity and prevented neuronal cell death.

* CKJ730 protected against post-stroke glucose dysregulation by restoring β-cell mass in the gerbils with transient artery occlusion.

* Serum tumor necrosis factor-α and interleukin-1β levels were lower in CKJ730 and CKJ731 than the negative control.

* CSB also improved glucose metabolism and suppressed inflammatory cytokines, but less than CKJ730 and CKJ731.

* Clostridia increased, and Bacteriodia slightly decreased in the negative-control group, compared to the normal control.

Collectively, researchers said, "the daily intake of chungkookjang fermented with B. amyloliquefaciens improved the gut microbiome, increased blood flow to the brain, suppressed systemic inflammation".

Taken altogether, potato may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of post-stroke hyperglycemia-induced complications,, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Omega 3 Fatty Acid Inhibits the Onset of Acute Dyslipidemia

By Kyle J. Norton

Fat including cholesterol and triglycerides consists of hydrocarbon molecules.

Dyslipidemia is a condition of abnormal levels of lipids in their blood.

Hyperlipidemia is a medical condition characterized by abnormally high levels of cholesterol in the bloodstream.

Overexpression of cholesterol levels in the bloodstream has been linked to plaques accumulation on the arterial walls, a major cause of some forms of heart disease and stroke.

Cholesterol is the type of fat produced by the liver or from fat intake playing a critical role in the building of strong cell walls, production of vitamin D and steroid hormones and bile acid to aid digestion in the small intestine.

Cholesterol produced by the liver in a healthy individual is returned to the liver by high-density lipoprotein (HDL).

The healthy ratio of HDL/LDL cholesterol is any numbers that are less than 1/4.

On the other hand, triglyceride is fat in the blood that comes from the outside source used by the body to convert to energy.

Omega-3 fatty acids are phytochemicals in the class of lipids, found abundantly in deepsea fisk, dark-green leafy vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, etc.

The three main components of Omega-3 fatty acids are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

Triglyceride is stored in the fat cells used to produced energy between meals and in the case when food is scarce.

Compared to cholesterol, triglycerides in high levels also associated with the risk of heart disease, particularly in people with high levels of LDL and low levels of HDL.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of diseases associated with high blood cholesterol, researchers examined the Omega 3 fatty acid activity in the management of hypertriglyceridemia.

According to the results of the study,
* Omega 3 fatty acids lowered LDL cholesterol and reduce CV risk.

* Omega 3 fatty acid also lowered triglyceride (TG) levels and elevated the high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol levels.

* Omega3 fatty acid inhibited the elevated TG levels that increased risk of CV events and very high TG levels are associated with acute pancreatitis.

Collectively, researchers said, " This review focuses on the clinical practice guidelines for the management of hypertriglyceridemia and the role of prescription omega-3 fatty acids in preventing pancreatitis and CV disease in individuals with high and very high TG levels".

Taken altogether, Omega-3 fatty acids may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of dyslipidemia, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Angelica Reduces Myocardial Infarction Damage

By Kyle J. Norton

Myocardial infarction is a severe and medical emergency characterized by the obstruction of the blood supply to the brain, causing a stroke. Prompt treatment can minimize brain damage and potential post disease complications.

The occurrence and extent of brain infarction are associated with three basic factors, including the site of arterial occlusion, the rapidity of arterial occlusion, and the presence or absence of collateral circulation.

In other words, brain infarction can be classified into myocardial infarction due to plaque rupture and myocardial oxygen supply-demand imbalance secondary to other acute illnesses.

Stroke is caused by the accumulation of plaques or blood clots that build up the arterial walls.  In other words, if plaques or blood clots building up in the arteries is blocking the circulation of blood in any part of the body causing oxygen not to be delivered to the brain, leading to the death of some cells in the brain.

According to the statistics, every year, more than 790,000 people suffer a stroke, including 600,000 of these are first attacks, and 185,000 are recurrent attacks. Most cases of stroke occur in people over the age of 65.

The exact causes of a blood clot to induce acute brain infarction are unknown. Plaques accumulation in the arteries associated with hardening and stiffing arterial walls is a leading cause of cardiovascular disease, including stroke.

The trouble with speaking and understanding, confusion, sudden numbness, weakness or paralysis in your face, arm or leg, headache and the trouble with walking are some of the most common symptoms found in patients with post-myocardial infarction.

Depending on the severity of the acute infarction, in serious cases, patients may also experience symptoms, paralysis of the face, arm or leg, trouble with seeing in one or both eyes.

Angelica or Dang Qui is a herb of Genus Angelica from the family Apiaceae, indigenous to China.

The herb has been used as a Queen herb in traditional Chinese medicine antispasmodic and vasodilatory agent, and to balance the hormones in women for a normal menstrual cycle and menstruation and strengthen heart, spleen, kidneys, and liver for both men and women, etc. In other words, it is used to treat gynecological ailments, fatigue, mild anemia, and high blood pressure. It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, etc.

On finding a chemical ingredient for the management of post-stroke researchers examined the mechanisms of Angelica Sinensis and Angelica sinensis polysaccharide (ASP for the treatment of acute myocardial infarction (AMI).

According to the results of the analysis, A. Sinensis exerted effect on.228 major targets that regulate multiple pathways in multiple targets involved in several biological processes against AMI injury.

In vitro and in vivo, ASP significantly decreased endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress-induced cell death both in ischemia injury rats.

Furthermore, ASP treatment reduced infarct size and preserved heart function.

ASP enhanced activating transcription factor 6 (ATF6) activity in restoring the ER function in stressed cells.

Most importantly, ASP attenuated levels of proinflammatory cytokines and maintained a balance in the oxidant/antioxidant levels against the onset of oxidative stress after AMI.

Taken altogether, Herbal Angelica may be used for the treatment of myocardial infarction, pending to larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Dandelion(Taraxacum officinale) Process Anti-Pulmonary Fibrotic Activity in Vitro and Vivo

By Kyle J. Norton

The lung formed part of the respiratory system with a function of the primary organs of the respiratory system to absorb oxygen to the blood and exhale carbon dioxide from the blood.

Lung diseases are medical conditions, that affect the upper respiratory tract, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, alveoli, pleura and pleural cavity, and the nerves and muscles of breathing.

People with lung diseases have breathing problems, that prevent them to get enough oxygen for the body's needs.

According to the statistic from the World Health Organization, respiratory diseases are leading causes of death and disability in the world. chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma are 2 of the most common respiratory disease, affecting 65 million and 334 million people, respectively.

3 million people die from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) each year, making it the third leading cause of death worldwide. And 14% of 334 million people suffer from asthma are children.

Long-term smoking is considered one of the leading risk factors of lung diseases. Other risk factors associated with the onset of lung diseases include radon, asbestos, second-hand smoke, and air pollution.

Pulmonary fibrosis (PF) is a condition that the lung tissue becomes damaged and scarred. The damage that causes thickened, stiff tissue makes the lung more difficult to perform its function abnormally.

More precisely, pulmonary fibrosis (PF) is a chronic and progressive condition of lung disease characterized by reduced numbers and increased stiffness of air sac in the lungs (alveoli), affecting the lung breathing function to provide enough oxygen into the bloodstream.

According to the American Lung Association, the most common PF is idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. Approximately 50,000 new cases of IPF are diagnosed each year.

The most common symptoms of PF are shortness of breath, dry, and hacking cough, fast, and shallow breathing, tiredness, aching joints, and muscles and clubbing of the tips of the fingers or toes.

Most cases of IPF are found in patients between the ages of 50 and 70 years old, particularly in men.

Dandelion is a herbaceous perennial plant, genus Taraxacum, belongings to the family Asteraceae, native to temperate regions of the world. It has been used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat gout, eczema, acne, gall bladder, kidney, liver and urinary disorders, hypoglycemia, dyspepsia with constipation, edema, blood pressure, and heart weakness, chronic joint, skin diseases, etc.

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of lung diseases, scientists examined the Chinese herbals decoctions, including Pu Gong Ying on PF.

The formula showed to effectively reduce the expressions of fibrotic hallmark genes and proteins both in alveolar in vitro and in mouse lung tissues in vivo.

The efficacy of the decoct is associated with over one hundred oil-soluble chemicals found in lipid extracts from other Chinese herbals decoctions that work synergistically against the damage in the lung tissues.

More precisely, the active component in the decoction is two forms of phosphocholines, PC (18:0/18:2) and PC (16:0/18:2) could form liposomes with small RNAs to enter human alveolar.

Taken altogether, Dandelion may be considered a remedy for the treatment of PF, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Fermented Soy Reduces the Post Ishcmeic Stroke Damage

By Kyle J. Norton

Stroke is a medical condition caused by reduced blood flow to the brain, leading to the death of brain cells due to lack of oxygen or bleeding.

In other words, a stroke can either be results of a blocked artery (ischemic stroke) or the leaking or bursting of a blood vessel (hemorrhagic stroke).

A mini-stroke is a temporary disruption of blood flow to the brain that only causes some disruption to the brain by inducing some minor permanent damage.

Depending on the parts of the neuron being damage, patients may experience different symptoms. However, most common symptoms of stroke include paralysis or numbness of the face, arm or leg, problems in vision, speaking, walking and persistent headache.

Certain medical conditions such as diabetes. heart diseases, long-term use of tobacco, the increase in age, ethnicity are some prevalent risk factors of stroke.

In the US, between 700,000 to 750,000 yearly have a stroke, approximately 1/4 of all stroke victims die as a direct result of the stroke or its complications.

The ischemic stroke is caused by too little blood in the brain when the arteries to your brain are narrowed or blocked, causing severely reduced blood flow (ischemia).

This deprives your brain cells of oxygen and nutrients, and cells may begin to die within minutes. The most common ischemic strokes are:
* Thrombotic stroke is also sometimes referred to as large-artery strokes. The process leading to thrombotic stroke is complex and occurs over time.

* An embolic stroke occurs when a blood clot or other particle forms in a blood vessel away from your brain. It is usually caused by a dislodged blood clot that has traveled through the blood vessels until it becomes wedged in an artery.

Fermented soy products are diverse varieties of soy food that are made from fermented soybeans, including miso, natto, tempeh, and soy sauce.

On finding a potential plant that processes post-stroke activity researchers examined the effect of  Chungkookjang, a traditional Korean fermented soybean food (fermentation Microbes 100730 and 100731 strains of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens(SRCM100730; CKJ730) and SRCM100731(CKJ731)) protected against ischemic stroke and post-stroke hyperglycemia in Mongolian gerbils with ischemic stroke induced by transient occlusion of the carotid arteries.

According to the results of the analysis of gerbil fed 4.5% cooked soybeans (CSB), CKJ730, CKJ731, or cellulose (negative-control) in 40 energy% fat diets for 3 weeks, and then had artery occlusion for 8 min and continued taking the assigned diet for 5 weeks.
* CKJ730 and CKJ731 had thrombolytic activity and prevented neuronal cell death and improved short-term memory and spontaneous alteration compared to the negative control.

* CKJ730 and CKJ731 improved neurological symptoms including drooped eyes, crouched posture, flexor reflex, and walking patterns the most among the stroke-induced gerbils. CKJ730 and CKJ731 increased active time, grip strength, and blood flow measured by Doppler compared to the negative control.

* CKJ730 protected against post-stroke glucose dysregulation by restoring β-cell mass in the gerbils with transient artery occlusion.

* Serum tumor necrosis factor-α and interleukin-1β levels associated with inflammatory cytokines were lower in CKJ730 and CKJ731 than the negative control.

* CSB also improved glucose metabolism and suppressed inflammatory cytokines, but less than CKJ730 and CKJ731.

* CKJ730 and CKJ731 changed the amounts of Bacteriodia and Clostridia to be similar to normal control.

Collectively, researchers said, " the daily intake of chungkookjang fermented with B. amyloliquefaciens improved the gut microbiome, increased blood flow to the brain, suppressed systemic inflammation, and may reduce the susceptibility to injury from ischemic stroke in gerbils subjected to ischemic injury".

Taken altogether, fermented Soy may be considered a functional food for the treatment of ischemic stroke injury, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Omega 3 Fatty Acids Process Cardio-Protective Activity in Vivo

By Kyle J. Norton

Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are a class of conditions associated with the dysfunction of the arteries and heart, affecting the heart functioning.

According to the statistics provided by the CDC, heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women. Men are associated with 1/2 of the deaths due to heart disease in 2015 were in men, compared to women.

Believe it or not, more than 63),000 Americans die from heart disease each year or 1 in every 4 deaths are caused by heart disease.

On another hand, stroke is a medical condition caused by poor blood flow to the brain, leading to brain cell death in the affected region.

Cardioprotection is an action that contributes to the protection of heart and blood vessels integrity against damage or injury, including heart diseases, and stroke.

In other words, cardioprotection is a process in which substances or medicines are used including an herbal remedy to protect heart muscle tissues against ischemic insult and deoxygenation injury.

Coronary artery disease caused by narrowing of the arteries, heart attack, abnormal heart rhythms, or arrhythmias and stroke is the most common type of cardiovascular disease found in the Western world.

The most common symptoms of CVD include persistent fatigue, shortness of breath, irregular heartbeat, chest pain, and fainting.

If you have some of the aforementioned symptoms, please make sure that you check with your doctor to rule out the CVD possibility.

The exact causes of cardiovascular diseases are unidentified. However, according to epidemiological studies, the most prevalent factors include aging, smoking. lack of exercise. unhealthy diet. obesity. high blood pressure and cholesterol, and family history.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of cardio-diseases, researchers examined the effects of 3 diets with different omega-3/6 fatty acid ratios on infarct size on the lipid composition of cardiac tissue.

According to the results of Sprague-Dawley rats that were fed omega-3/6 fatty acid diets with 1:1, 1:5, or 1:20 ratios for at least 10 days, followed by occlusion of the left anterior descending artery for 40 min and 24 h of reperfusion,
* The infarct size was significantly smaller in the 1:1 group than in the other groups.

* The significantly higher concentrations of the omega-3 fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid, docosapentaenoic acid, and docosahexaenoic acid were found in the 1:1 group than in the other groups.

* Omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acid levels were similar between groups, although they were higher in the 1:5 and 1:20 groups than in the 1:1 group.

* Docosahexaenoic acid levels in cardiac tissue and infarct size were significantly correlated with no other significant links being apparent.

Moreover, researchers said, " The present study indicated that a 1:1 omega-3/6 fatty acid ratio protected against ischemia and was associated with the increased omega-3 fatty acid composition of cardiac tissue".

Taken altogether, Omega-3 fatty acids may be considered a cardio-protective remedy, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Gamma-Linolenic Acid Inhibits of Colonic Inflammation in Vivo

By Kyle J. Norton

Colonic inflammation is a condition associated with inflammation of the colon of the digestive system.

Inflammation is a natural immune response involving the stimulated production of pro-inflammatory activity with a target to protect our body against foreign invasions such as virus and bacteria after injury and damage.

In other words, pro-inflammatory cytokines are activated through systematic immune response to the damage cells which release chemicals including histamine, bradykinin, and prostaglandins to protect the injure area or location against infection, leading to blood vessels to leak fluid into the tissues, causing swelling and other symptoms such as pain, swelling, and redness.

Inflammation can be classified into
* Acute inflammation occurs quickly or within the hours and lasts a few days or weeks and the damaged tissues are healed themselves after all pathogens are killed off.

However, if the immune system can not completely eradicate all invaders in the acute phase of infection, it will compromise, leading to chronic low-grade inflammation, a major cause of cardiovascular disease, arthritis, and diabetes.

* Chronic inflammation is a low-grade inflammation caused by the inability of the immune system to eliminate the invasive pathogens that occurred in the acute phase of infection.

Any inflammation that lasts more than 8 weeks is considered chronic inflammation.

Believe it or not, worldwide, 3 of 5 death are results from chronic inflammatory diseases like stroke, chronic respiratory diseases, heart disorders, cancer, obesity, and diabetes.

In the US, chronic inflammatory diseases affect more than 50 million Americans each year.

Diseases associated with low-grade inflammation include diabetes and cardiovascular.

Gamma-linolenic acid is a phytochemical in the group of Omega-3, 6,9 fatty acids, belongings to the class of Lipids, found abundantly in evening primrose, borage, blackcurrant, etc.

On finding a potential plant that processes anti-colonic diseases activity researchers examined the relationship between the high-fat, high-sugar diet (HFHSD) and alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) on mouse colitis induced by the administration of trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid (TNBS).

The study included female BABL/c mice which were fed with HFHSD for the 9 weeks. At the same time, ALA treatment (150 or 300 mg/kg) was administered on a daily basis. At the end of the 9 weeks, experimental colitis was induced by the intra-colonic administration of trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid (TNBS).

According to the results of the analysis,
* Before treatment, TNBS induced severe clinical manifestations of colitis and histological damage.
* Low-ALA (150 mg/kg) administration profoundly ameliorated TNBS-induced clinical manifestations, bodyweight loss, spleen weight loss, and histological damage.

* Interestingly, high-ALA (300 mg/kg) administration did not ameliorate colitis and even exacerbated the symptoms.

* HFHSD consumption assisted TNBS in changing IL-12, IFN-γ, IL-2, and IL-17A, the pro-inflammatory cytokines in the liver and these changes were recovered through low-ALA.

* Moreover, HFHSD had a significant impact on the total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and triglyceride (TG), which related to the increased risk of hyperlipidemia

Collectively, researchers said, "HFHSD exacerbated the TNBS-induced colitis via the Th1/Th17 (inflammatory) pathway. The Low-ALA (150 mg/kg) exhibited protective effects against the TNBS-induced colitis via the Th1/Th2/Th17 (anti-inflammatory) pathway".

Taken altogether, gamma-linolenic acid may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of colonic inflammation, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
