#Healthy Food Common Fig or Fig (Ficus carica) Processes Antiviral Activities in Vitro

By Kyle J. Norton

Unlike bacteria, a virus replicates only inside the living cells of an organism. Viruses can infect all types of life forms, including humans and microorganisms, such as bacteria and archaea.

In other words, viruses are made up of a piece of genetic material, such as DNA or RNA enclosed in a coat of protein. Virtual infection is a result of a viral invasion that uses components of invaded cells to multiply, leading to the damages or alternation of the DNA or RNA of the host cells.

Anti-viral effects are the use of certain substances to cause the destruction of a virus.

In the acute phase of viral infection, depending on the types of viruses, the viruses after entering the body start to attack the specific host cells. The cold and flu virus will attack the cells in the respiratory system and the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), which causes AIDS, will attack the white blood cells of the immune system,

The viral infection has been known to carry over some different stages. After successfully attaching to the host cell, the virus releases its mRNA into the host cell, leading to the recruit of the host cell's enzymes to accelerate the viral multiplying, then breaking free from the host cell to start the cycle all over again.

The white blood cells in the systematic immune response in the acute phase of infection stimulate the production of the proinflammatory cytokines to the site of infection with an aim to protect our body by killing off the invaders.

The battle between the immune white blood cell and viral invaders in most cases is in the flavor of the immune system, leading of the death of invaders and healing of the infection.

However, if the immune system can not kill off the invaders with 3 - 8 weeks, it then will adapt to the change, leading to chronic inflammatory and infectious diseases.

According to the statistics provided by the CDC, infectious diseases cause over 15 million visits to physician offices and 3.7 million visits to the emergency department in the US every year.

Fig is a species of F. Carica, belongings to the family Moraceae. It is a deciduous shrub, native to Southeast Asia. The tree can grow to a height of 33 ft and the fruit can be as large as 2.0 inches.

On finding natural compounds for the treatment of infectious diseases, researchers examined the latex of fig fruit (Ficus carica) on skin infections with the possible viral origin.

According to the tested differentiation of 5 extracts (methanolic, hexanoic, ethyl acetate, hexane-ethyl acetate (v/v) and chloroformic) for their antiviral potential activity against herpes simplex type 1 (HSV-1), echovirus type 11 (ECV-11) and adenovirus (ADV) in vitro, the hexanoic and hexane-ethyl acetate (v/v) extracts inhibited multiplication of viruses at concentrations of 78 µg mL(-1).

Furthermore, these two extracts were possible candidates as herbal medicines for herpes virus, echovirus, and adenovirus infectious diseases.

Most importantly, all extracts had no cytotoxic effect on Vero cells at all tested concentrations.

Taken altogether, common fig or fig (Ficus carica)  may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of viral infection, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Phytochemical Tocopherols Kill Acute Myeloid Leukemia Cells in Vitro

By Kyle J. Norton

Leukemia is a condition characterized by an abnormal increase of white blood cells produced by the bone marrow and/or the lymphatic system. Depending on the malignant granulocytes or lymphocytes, leukemia is classified into myelogenous or lymphoblastic leukemia.

Bone marrow is soft tissue inside the hollow center of the major bone. including spine, pelvis, underarm, leg. etc.

Acute leukemia is a condition caused by a rapid increase in the numbers of extreme immature white blood cells that appear in the bloodstream in the other parts of the body, including tissue and organs.

Acute leukemia can also be classified into
* Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL)
Acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) is a type of cancer with the abnormal growth of extreme immature lymphocytes overproduced by the bone marrow and/or lymphatic system. The condition has a tendency to multiply quickly, leading to the death of normal white blood cells in the bone marrow and/or lymphatic system.

In ALL, lymphocytes appear immature in the bloodstream. Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is the most common children forms of leukemia with about 80% of all cases.

* Acute myeloid leukemia (AML)
Acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) is a cancer of myelogenous lining caused by the rapid growth of abnormal granulocytes accumulated in the bone marrow, interfering with the normal blood cells. In AML, granulocytes appear immature in the bloodstream.

According to the statistics, in 2019, approximately 21,450 people of all ages including 11,650 men and boys and 9,800 women and girls) in the United States will be diagnosed with AML.

AML is the second most common type of leukemia diagnosed in adults and children, but most cases occur in adults. AML makes up 32% of all adult leukemia cases.

The 5-year survival rate for people 20 and older with AML is approximately 24%. For people younger than 20, the survival rate is 67%.

Tocopherols are phytochemicals of which many have vitamin E activity, belonging to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in butter, egg yolk, milk fat, some vegetable, and seed or nut oils, etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of leukemia, researchers examined the effect of δ-tocopherol in acute myeloid leukemia.

Compared to other leukemia cell lines, δ-T as low as 20 µM showed a strong activity on AML cell line KG-1.

The δ-T inhibition of AML cell line KG-1 was observed in a set of primary cells collected from patients newly diagnosed with AML.

Furthermore, δ-T also induced apoptosis and cell cycle arrest against KG-1 cells.

The results of δ-T anti-AML activity were attributed to the inhibition of protein cyclin-d1 associated with the G1 phase of the cell cycle arrest and a set of homeobox proteins associated with cancer cell growth and apoptosis.

Taken altogether, tocopherols may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of acute myeloid leukemia pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of tocopherols in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Cruciferous Vegetables Inhibit the Risk and Progression of Prostate Cancer

By Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is a class of diseases characterized by abnormal cell growth of cells caused by the alternation of prostate cell DNA.

Prostate gland wrapped around the around a tube (the urethra), is a gland of the male reproductive system found in front of the rectum and just below the bladder with a function that produces some of the semen that carries sperm.

Prostate cancer is cancer originating from the inner lining of the prostate gland caused by irregular prostate cell growth. Prostate cancer is slow-growing cancer. However, they can be deadly in the advanced stage by traveling a distance away to infect other healthy tissue and organs.

Most prostate cancers are found in the yearly annual physical exam, designed for the male at a higher risk of prostate cancer.

The exact causes of prostate cancer are unknown. However, the most common risk factor associated with the onset of the disease is genetic mutation inherited from the parents. mutation of BRCA1 and BRCA2 reserves the function of tumor suppressor genes which normally repair mistakes in a cell's DNA to allow DNA mutation of the prostate cells.

According to the statistic provided by the American Cancer Society, 1 in 9 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime. Approximately, 6 cases in 10 are diagnosed in men aged 65 or older.

The most common symptoms of prostate cancer include frequent urination, weak or interrupted urine flow or the need to strain to empty the bladder. and the urge to urine frequently at night due to the large size of the tumor that suppresses the bladder and the flow of urine.

Some patients may also experience symptoms of blood in the urine, blood in the seminal fluid and pain or burning during urination caused by the tumor that breaks the nearby small veins and nerve cells.

Cruciferous vegetables are a group of vegetables, belongings to the family Brassicaceae (also called Cruciferae) with many genera, species, and cultivated all over the world in suitable climate for commercial profits, including cauliflower, cabbage, kale, garden cress, bok choy, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and green leafy vegetables.

On finding potential and natural foods that process anti-cancer property, researchers investigated the protective effect of sulforaphane (SFN), an isothiocyanate (ITC) derived from cruciferous vegetables against the prostate cancers.

According to the tested analysis,
* SF exerted a strong antioxidative and chemopreventive activity by delaying or blocking carcinogenesis, in vivo.

* SF induced biochemical and epigenetic changes, preventing, delaying, or reversing preneoplastic or advanced prostate lesions, associated with the risk of cancer developing through increasing the expression of antioxidant protein NRF2.

* SF activity networks involved in cell death programming through ceratin intrinsic methods of apoptosis by causing cell cycle arrest, mitosis interruption, activation of caspases and mitochondria depolarization.

Based on the evidence, researchers said, "These outcomes encourage the consumption of Brassica specimens, which could be easily achieved by the incorporation of food and vegetables rich in cruciferous isothiocyanates in the diet".

Taken altogether, dietary cruciferous vegetables may be considered functional remedies for the protection of the prostate against cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Turmeric, the Best Antioxidant Functional Remedy

By Kyle J. Norton

Antioxidants are stable atom that plays a critical role in protecting the body against the attack of free radicals.

In other words, antioxidants inhibited the onset of free radical before they can cause a chain reaction in facilitating the protein, lipid and cell damage.

Antioxidants can either produced by the liver or intake from dietary sources. Under normal conditions, antioxidant enzymes produced by the body in a healthy individual are good enough to counter the bombardment of free radical attacks.

Antioxidants keep our bodies functioning properly by reducing the risk of diseases associated with oxidative stress.

Free radicals are highly reactive molecules with an unpaired electron on the outer ring of the atom.

Due to its nature to become stable, free radicals readily to donate or steal an electron from other molecules, leading to the chain of domino's effect that can not be stopped until either the electrons are paired or inhibited by antioxidants.

This chain of reaction is the cause of oxidative stress, a condition is associated with either overexpression of free radicals or depletion of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host organs.

Overexpression of free radicals is known to cause damage in contributing to the etiology of many chronic health problems such as cardiovascular and inflammatory disease, cataracts, and cancer.

Oxidative stress is a result of an imbalance of the ratio of free radicals and antioxidants in the body.

The expression of oxidative stress is a medical condition characterized by the imbalance of the ratio of free radicals and antioxidant enzymes produced by the host tissue.

In some cases, this reaction also is caused long-term accumulation of toxic substances in the body, such as lead, cadmium, mercury, and arsenic.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as an anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and for the treatment of flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

In the urgency to discover a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, researchers examined the effects of curcumin supplementation on oxidative stress and antioxidant defense enzymes in human subjects.

The meta-analysis reviewing the randomized controlled trials published in English in any year in Pubmed, Embase, Cochrane Central, Scopus, and Google Scholar, compared the treatment of curcumin to either placebo or standard of care or no intervention.

According to the examing of 127 titles and abstracts identified in 17 articles, including participants, ranged from 22 to 160 across the included studies, curcumin significantly reduced oxidative stress markers MDA, and increased superoxide dismutase, catalase,, and glutathione peroxidase, compared to control.

Furthermore, in subgroup analyses, curcumin could significantly reduce MDA levels with or without use of piperine, compared to only increase the SOD level in presence of piperine.

Based on the results, researchers said, "The administration of piperine with curcumin may enhance the efficacy of curcumin on antioxidant defense system".

Taken altogether, turmeric processed a high amount of bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements to enhance the levels of antioxidants in the host, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Angelica Inhibits Osteoclastogenesis and Bone Resorption Against the Risk of Osteoporosis

By Kyle J. Norton

Osteoporosis is a condition of thinning of bone and bone tissues as a result of the loss of bone density over a long period of time.

The condition is a widespread degenerative disease of skeletal joints and often associated with senescence invertebrates due to excessive or abnormal mechanical loading of weight-bearing joints, arising from heavy long-term use or specific injuries and considered as a major health problem in both elderly men and women.

Scientists as of today do not know the exact causes of osteoporosis. However, they do know that certain factors are associated with the onset and progression of the disease.

Osteoporosis is the common disease among the elderly, probably due to the aging effect that induces nutrition deficiency, vitamin D, reduced hormone production and production of bone mass, and increased bone reabsorption.

Osteoclastogenesis is a procedure processed in many stages. Interferes with the specific stage of the process, can induce the imbalanced osteoclasts and osteoblast.

The osteoclast is a type of cell differentiated from another type of cell called a macrophage that breaks down the bone that leads to bone resorption.

In patients with osteoporosis, this balance shifts in favor of osteoclasts compared to those of osteoblasts.

In other words, in osteoporotic patients, bone resorption is far more exceedingly to bone formation.

Furthermore, the imbalance of osteoclasts and osteoblast also is found in patients with Paget's disease, rheumatoid arthritis, osteopetrosis, periodontal disease, and bone cancer metastases.

Angelica or Dang Qui is a herb of Genus Angelica from the family Apiaceae, indigenous to China. The herb has been used as a Queen herb in traditional Chinese medicine antispasmodic and vasodilatory agent, and to balance the hormones in women for a normal menstrual cycle and menstruation and strengthen heart, spleen, kidneys, and liver for both men and women, etc. In other words, it is used to treat gynecological ailments, fatigue, mild anemia, and high blood pressure. It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, etc.

On finding a potential compound for the protection of bone density, researchers examined the effect of Angelica Sinensis (AS) extract on RANKL-induced osteoclast differentiation.

The study is to examine the osteoclast precursor cell line bone marrow macrophages (BMMs) cultured and stimulated with RANKL followed by treatment with AS at several doses by regulating the complex networks involved in osteoclastogenesis and bone resorption.

According to the results of the experiment, AS extract protected the bone density by inhibiting RANKL-mediated osteoclast differentiation in bone marrow macrophages (BMMs) in a dose-dependent manner without any evidence of cytotoxicity.

AS extract also inhibited the mRNA expression of transcription factors that are activated in immune cells and other cell types following stimulation by a variety of factors in RANKL-treated BMMs.

In other words, AS protected bone density integrity against osteoclastogenesis and inhibited bone resorption, the expression of cytokines, growth factors, and hormones induced by the treatment of RANKL.

Taken altogether, herbal Angelica may be considered an anti osteoclastogenesis and bone resorption remedy to protect the bone mineral density against the onset of osteoporosis, pending to larger sample size and multicenter human study.

By Kyle J. Norton

Fungal infection is a common disease caused by the overgrowth of fungus.

In other words, the immune system that protects the body against microorganisms has been overwhelming by the overgrowth of fungus.

Yeasts, molds, and mushrooms are types of fungi. The tiny microorganisms have cells with nuclear.

Most common fungal infections start from the lungs or the skin. Long-term use of antibiotics and people with the weakened immune system are susceptible to fungal infection, epidemiologically.

However, some researchers suggested that common risk factors for fungal infection also include pregnancy, diabetes mellitus, oral contraceptives, and inadequate therapy.
People with weakened immune systems such as cancer treatment, frequent use of antibiotics are associated to increase the risk of fungal infection.

Patients with diabetes are also more prone to fungal infections. Fungal infection associated with diabetes includes jock itch, athlete's foot,..... and ringworm.

Depending on the locations of infection, patients may experience symptoms of common peeling, cracking, scaling redness, blisters Itching,...... and burning sensation.

In women, signs of a yeast infection may include itching and swelling around the vagina. burning sensations or pain during urination or intercourse,........ and unusual vaginal discharge.

In men, signs of a yeast infection may include burning and itching around the head of the penis,
redness, and swelling, pain during urination or sex,..... small, rash-like bumps.

Dandelion is a herbaceous perennial plant, genus Taraxacum, belongings to the family Asteraceae, native to temperate regions of the world. Legume Protects the Liver Cells Against the Rick of Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease

By Kyle J. Norton

The liver is the largest internal organ located in the upper right portion of the abdomen, beneath your diaphragm and above your stomach.

The liver not only plays a critical role to filter the blood coming from the intestine before passing them to other parts of the body but also protects our body against toxin by detoxifying chemicals and metabolizes drugs.

Furthermore, the liver produces bile that not only aids the digestive function in food absorption but also builds strong cell membranes, produces vitamin D and steroid hormone.

Liver disease in most cases is linked to alcohol or drugs. In fact, it can be caused by a variety of factors and affecting everyone from infants to older adults, including infected viri such as hepatitis A, B, C, and medication overloaded.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is one of the major causes of cirrhosis and liver cancer.

Nonalcoholic liver disease is a chronic condition caused by fat accumulated over time in the liver, affecting people who drink little to no alcohol.

In other words, if you have fat that makes up over 5% of the liver, you are considered to have fatty liver disease.

Nonalcoholic liver disease can be classified into the noninflammatory fatty liver and inflammatory liver steatohepatitis.

According to world statistics, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is normally known as a disease of the Western world(2). However, due to the economic prosperity of Southeast Asian(3), the disease also was found in a large population in the cities, causing concerns of many scientists in the region(4)(6).

According to the joint assessment of the prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and risk factors for advanced fibrosis and mortality in the US, led by the Stanford University School of Medicine, "The prevalence of NAFLD in the United States (U.S.) has risen from 18% in 1988–1991 to 31% in 2011–2012. Estimates of NAFLD prevalence for adults in Western countries are 20–30%, with much higher prevalence in adults with obesity (80–90%), diabetes (30–50%), and hyperlipidemia (90%)"(5).

Among the more affluent regions of China, the prevalence rate of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is approximately 15%(6). The number may decrease substantially if the poor rural populations where obesity is non-existence are also taking into account(7).

The exact causes of NAFLD aren't well understood. Some researchers suggested that certain risk factors such as long-term use of certain medications(8), genetic preposition(8), insulin resistance(8), high cholesterol(8) and triglycerides(8) in the blood, polycystic ovary syndrome(8), metabolic syndrome(8), obesity(8), and type 2 diabetes(8) are associated with the onset of the disease.

A legume is a plant in the family Fabaceae that fruit or seed of a plant.
On finding a potent ingredient for the treatment of liver diseases, researchers investigated the impact of legume intake, including green bean against the risk of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD.

According to the results of the valid and reliable food frequency questionnaire returned by 169 newly diagnosed patients with NAFLD and 803 controls participated in the study, greater intake of green peas was associated with a lower risk of NAFLD.

According to the adjusted models for higher dietary intake of legumes, 0.73 (0.64-0.84), 0.61 (0.46-0.78), and 0.35 (0.17-0.74), respectively.

In other words, legumes showed the highest effect compared to those of individual legume such as lentils, and beans.

Taken altogether, legume may be considered functional veggies for the prevention and treatment of NAFLD,  pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
