Phytochemical Betacyanins Might Process Anti Prostate Cancer Potency

By Kyle J. Norton

The prostate gland is a male reproductive organ warped around the urethra located in front of the rectum and just below the bladder responsible for making some of the semen that carries sperm.

The muscle of the prostate gland also plays a critical in nourishing and protecting sperm by secreting fluid in perm ejaculation into the urethra.

Prostate cancer is a medical and chronic condition characterized by abnormal cell growth in the tissues of the prostate.

Most cases of prostate cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining tissue of the prostate, before penetrating into the deeper layers to colonizing the entire prostate through cell proliferation.

At the advanced stage, prostate cancer also can spread to the distant parts of the body. Most prostate cancers are slow growing. Enlarged prostate and prostate cancer may be detected during the physical (rectum) exams.

According to the statistics provided by the Canadian Cancer Society,  in Canada, 1 in 7 men will develop prostate cancer during their lifetime, and the mortality rate of men is 1 in 27.

In other words,  1 in 4 men diagnosed with prostate cancer will die because of the disease.

The exact causes of prostate cancer are unknown, Epidemiologically, researchers do know that the below are some factors that increase the prevalence of the diseases
* Age
The risk of developing prostate cancer increases with the age of over 45

* Family history
If one of your directed family members has prostate cancer, you are twice at risk to develop it.

*  Race
Prostate cancer is more likely to strike black and white in the US.

* Heredity
Researchers found that up to 70 percent of men with prostate cancer have lost one copy of the Phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN) gene at the time of diagnosis. The tumor protein 53
(p53) mutations are a late event in pathology of prostate cancer.

* Low levels of vitamin D in the blood
Researchers found that men with a deficiency of level of vitamin D in the blood are at higher risk to develop prostate cancer.

*  Excessive drinking
Excessive drink not only increases the risk of liver cancer but also associated with a higher risk of prostate cancer as it interferes with folate metabolism.

* Enlarged prostate
Men with an enlarged prostate are at high risk in developing prostate cancer.

*  Sexual transmitting diseases
Infected diseases such as chlamydia, gonorrhea, or syphilis are associated with a higher risk of the diseases.

* Obesity
In a study of Obesity May Raise Risk of Prostate Cancer Spread, Christopher J. Keto, MD, a urological oncology postdoctoral associate at Duke University Medical Center, Durham, N.C. found that overweight men were three times more likely to have their cancer spread.

However, most people with some of the risk factors have never had developed prostate cancer

Betacyanins are phytochemicals in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments, belonging to the group of Betalains, found abundantly in beets, chard, etc.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of prostate cancer, researchers examined the effect of the red beetroot extract (Beta vulgaris L.), the FDA approved red food color E162 on the development of multi-organ tumors in experimental animals.

In human androgen-independent, human prostate cancer cells (PC-3) researchers compared the cytotoxic effect of the red beetroot extract with an anticancer drug, doxorubicin (adriamycin),
* Both doxorubicin and the beetroot extract exhibited a dose-dependent cytotoxic effect in the PC3 cancer cell lines.

* Further analysis of the cytotoxic activity of beetroot extract, researchers found that although the cytotoxicity of the beetroot extract was significantly lower compared to doxorubicin, it continued to decrease the growth rate of the PC-3 cells (3.7% in 3 days vs. 12.5% in 7 days) at the concentration of 29 µg/ml compared to those of doxorubicin which completely inhibited the growth of the PC-3 cells in three days at the same concentration level.

* According to the chemical differentiation, the efficacy of beetroot extract anti-prostate cancer activity was attributed to the major betacyanin constituent, that plays an important role in the cytotoxic exhibition.

In other words, all phytochemicals work synergistically to exert anti-prostate cancer property, particularly,  betanin, the major ingredient of betacyanin.

Taken altogether, betacyanins used alone or combined with conventional medicine may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of prostate cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of betacyanins in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Turmeric Protects the Liver Against Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease

By Kyle J. Norton

The liver is the largest internal organ with a function which filters the blood from the intestinal tract before passing them to other parts of the body.

In other words, the liver detoxes the blood coming from the digestive tract before passing the blood to nourish other tissues and organs in the body.

Additonally, the liver also produces bile to aid digestion and cholesterol to build strong cell membranes, production of vitamin D, steroid hormones, and antioxidant enzymes that inhibit free radicals oxidation.

Liver disease is a broad term included any problems that cause the reduced function of the liver.
Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a chronic condition caused by fat accumulated in the liver over time, in the absence of excessive alcohol use. The disease can be classified into the types of non-inflammatory fatty liver (NAFL) and inflammatory nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH).

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is one of the major causes of cirrhosis and liver cancer.

The progression of NAFLD that leads to cirrhosis, is the late stage of liver scarring, as the liver tries to heal itself by halting inflammation, inducing symptoms of ascites, swell esophageal varices, hepatic encephalopathy, complications of liver cancer and liver failure.

A recent joint study led by the Guilan University of Medical Sciences (GUMS), suggested that curcumin supplementation may be effective for the regulation of liver enzymes in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) through reviewing the medical literature online.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

According to the statistics in 2015, approximately, 20 to 30% of the general population in the Western world suffer from NAFLD. The prevalent rate is substantially higher in the population with type 2 diabetes mellitus (70%) and morbid obesity (90%).

Believe or not, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) now becomes a universal disorder and the most common liver disease in the Western world.

Most people at the early stage NAFLD are asymptomatic.  However, at the later stage, most patients experience symptoms of right upper abdominal discomfort, fatigue, and/or malaise, and jaundice with yellowing of the skin and eyes.

Conventionally, as of today, there is no effective treatment of NAFLD. Weight loss for overweight and obese patients accompanied by the change of lifestyles are recommended, such as moderate exercise and reduced intake of alcohol, depending on individuals.

The randomized controlled trials (RCTs) included the search of studies published on PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science and Google Scholar until December 2017 in adult participants with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

According to the results of m-analysis of 4 randomized controlled trials including 228 subjects, subgroup with ≥1000 mg/day curcumin supplementation showed a trend toward significant reduction of ALT blood concentrations, a liver stress marker, compared to lower doses.

Furthermore, treatment for 8 weeks with the same concentration of curcumin supplementation also showed a significant reduction of liver stress marker AST.

The findings strongly suggested the efficacy of curcumin supplement for the treatment of NAFLD in a dose-dependent manner.

Moreover, a 12 weeks double-blind, randomized, controlled clinical trial with 92 patients with NAFLD aged 20-60 year with body mass index (BMI) ranged 24.9-40 kg/m2 randomly assigned to 4 groups as follows. 1) Turmeric supplementation (3 g/d) (n = 23, TUR); 2) Chicory seed supplementation (infused 9 g/d (4.5 g /100mL)) (n = 23, CHI); 3) Turmeric and chicory seed supplementation (3 g/d turmeric + infused 9 g/d chicory seed (n = 23, TUR + CHI); 4) Placebo (n = 23, PLA), researchers found that
* BMI and waist circumference (WC) associated with the risk of NAFLD were significantly reduced in CHI and TUR + CHI groups, compared with PLA group.

* Elevated liver stress markers found in patients with NAFLD was also inhibited in the TUR + CHI group observed by lower levels of serum alkaline phosphatase.

* TUR and TUR + CHI groups also showed an increase of levels of high-density lipoprotein (HLD)

* Additionally, TUR alone and plus chicory seed led to a significant reduction of parameters associated with NAFLD such as serum levels of TG/HDL-C and LDL-C/HDL-C ratio in TUR and TUR + CHI groups compared to placebo.

Taken altogether, turmeric used alone or combined other herbal remedy may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of NAFLD, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Cabbage Processes Anti-Hyperglycemic Activity in Vivo

By Kyle J. Norton

Hyperglycemia is a condition of abnormally high blood sugar in the bloodstream characterized by improper use of insulin by the body or the damage of beta cells that do not make enough hormone insulin.

Hyperglycemia is a hallmark of type 2 diabetes associated with diabetic complications caused by uncontrol levels of blood glucose. Another hallmark is insulin resistance.

More precisely, poor management of blood glucose has been found in much incidences associated with hyperglycemia in diabetic patients, including a poor diet, physical inactivity choices, symptoms of medicines intake.

In people who use insulin or medications to control blood glucose, skipping or not taking enough glucose-lowering medication may also experience symptoms of hyperglycemia.

Most common symptoms of hyperglycemia are frequent urination, increased thirst, blurred vision, persistent fatigue, headache, shortness of breath, confusion, and coma.

A joint study led by the Bahria University Medical and Dental College suggested that the methanol extract of Brassica oleracea var. capitata (MEB, cabbage) may be effective against hypolipidemia.

Cabbage is a species of Brassica oleracea belongings to the family Brassicaceae (or Cruciferae), native to the Mediterranean region along the seacoast. The veggie has a short stem with a crowded mass of leaves, usually green but in some varieties, it may be red or purplish.

Believe it or not, hyperglycemia is preventable. By the change of diet with a meal plan help inclduing eating often, watching the intake of sugar and carbohydrates, limiting the use of alcohol, and eating a diet rich in vegetables, fruit, and whole grains accompanied by daily moderate exercise, you can avoid hyperglycemia,

Dr. Waqas Sami, the lead scientist in the examination of diet in the risk type 2 diabetes wrote, "
Dietary habits and sedentary lifestyle are the major factors for the rapidly rising incidence of DM among developing countries".

And, "Improvement in the elevated HbA1c level can be achieved through diet management; thus, the patients could be prevented from developing diabetes complications. Awareness about diabetes complications and consequent improvement in dietary knowledge, attitude, and practices lead to better control of the disease.".

Where hemoglobin A1c level is the measurement associated with the risk of diabetes.

The study included 28 healthy white rabbits of either sex induced hyperglycemia equally divided into four groups with treated and standard groups that were administered MEB (500 mg·kg(-1)) and glibenclamide (10 mg·kg(-1)), respectively for 15 and 30 days.

Additionally, the animals of the normal and diabetic controls also received normal saline 1 mL/day equivalent to the volume of doses given to the test and standard animals.

According to the tested assays
* The MEB administration demonstrated a decrease of 106.6 mg·dL(-1) in fasting blood glucose, compared to diabetic control.

* The efficacy of MEB was comparable to those of glibenclamide in modifying the fasting blood glucose.

Fasting blood glucose used in the oral glucose tolerance test to measure the levels of blood glucose that is taken after an overnight fast. A fasting blood sugar level of less than 5.6 mmol/L is normal.

However, A fasting blood sugar level from 5.6 to 6.9 mmol/L or higher is considered prediabetes and diabetes, respectively.

These results suggest the methanol extract from collard greens processes a hypoglycemic effect in a diabetes animal model.

Dr. Assad T, the lead scientist said, "These results suggest the potential of MEB as a hypoglycemic ... agent".

Taken altogether, cabbage may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of hyperglycemia, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Lycopene Ameliorates Liver Oxidative Stress Against Non Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease

By Kyle J. Norton

The liver is the largest internal and detoxed organ which not only cleanses the blood from the intestinal tract before passing the blood to nourish other tissues and organs in the body but also secrets bile to aid digestion, build strong cell membranes, and produces vitamin D, and steroid hormones.

Additionally, antioxidant enzymes produced the liver that inhibits free radicals oxidation also play an essential role to reduce risk of oxidative stress, the major causes of protein, lipid and cellular damage.

Liver disease is a class of health problems that cause the reduced function of the liver.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a chronic condition induced the onset of cirrhosis and liver cancer caused by fat accumulated in the liver over time, with no influence of excessive alcohol use. The disease can be classified into the types of non-inflammatory fatty liver (NAFL) and inflammatory nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH).

Cirrhosis, is the late stage of liver scarring, as the liver tries to heal itself by halting inflammation, inducing symptoms of ascites, swell esophageal varices, hepatic encephalopathy, complications of liver cancer and liver failure.

According to the statistics provided by the American Liver Association, in the US about 100 million Americans are living with Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease.

Believe it or not, non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD), is also the most common form of liver disease in children and has more than doubled over the past 20 years.

The 2016 joint study led by the Autonomous University of Queretaro, showed that lycopene (LYC) may be effective on nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) model induced with a high-fat diet (HFD).

Some researchers suggested that the increased incidence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in the Americans that cause the onset of obesity may be correlated with the promotion of a high-fat diet.

Dr. Jensen VS, the lead scientist said, "In humans and animal models, excessive intake of dietary fat, fructose, and cholesterol have been linked to the development of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)".

And, "dietary fat and cholesterol are the primary drivers of NAFLD development and progression in rats, while fructose mostly exerts its effect on the circulating lipid pool".

Sprague-Dawley rats selected to the study induced a NAFLD model by either a normal diet (ND·4w) or an HFD (HFD·4w) during 4 weeks

Then, rats from the ND·4w group continued during 4 weeks with the same diet (ND·8w), and rats from HFD were fed during 4 weeks with an ND (HFD·4w+ND·4w) or an ND plus LYC (HFD·4w+ND+LYC·4w).

Lycopene is a phytochemical found in tomato in the class of carotenoid, a natural pigment with no vitamin A activity found abundantly in tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables, such as red carrots, watermelons, and papayas,

Tomatoes provide about 80% of the lycopene in the world diet. In plants, lycopene protects the host against excessive photodamage and perform various functions in photosynthesis.

Based on the tested analysis, ND plus LYC showed a significant effect NAFLD observed by the normalizing liver weight, hepatic TC, serum LDL.

Additionally, the ND plus LYC fed group demonstrated the reversal of some macroscopic and microscopic images of livers.

However, lycopene failed to inhibit the liver stress markers such as malondialdehyde level and serum aspartate aminotransferase activity during the period of study.

Dr. Piña-Zentella RM, the lead scientist after taking other factors into account wrote, "The results from this study suggest the potentially protective role of LYC against NAFLD".

Taken altogether, lycopene found in tomato may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease, pending on the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of lycopene in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Bromelain Promotes Anti Inflammatory Activity Against Allergic Asthma

By Kyle J. Norton

Allergic asthma is the most common form of asthma, triggered by inhaling allergens such as dust mites, pet dander, pollen or mold.

The condition in most cases is involved in the overreaction of the immune system against the unharmful allergens, leading to the tightening the muscle of the airway.

Most common allergens facilitate the onset of allergic asthma include, pollen from trees, grasses, and weeds, mold spores, and fragments, animal dander.

Other conditions such as smoking, a fireplace, candles, incense, or fireworks, air pollution, chemical fumes are also found to induce allergic asthma in the US.

Most common symptoms of allergic asthma are coughing,  wheezing, shortness of breath and tight chest.

Severe allergic asthma can also cause complications such as hives, mouth or facial swelling, difficulty swallowing.

According to the Allergy and Asthma Network,  8.0 percent (19.1 million) of adults over age 18 in the U.S. have respiratory allergies, 8.4 percent (6.1 million) of children in the U.S. have respiratory allergies.

Conventionally, medications used for treating allergic asthma are focusing to reduce symptoms and improve quality of life.

Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and to treat pains, strains, and muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.

With an aim to find a potential ingredient for the treatment of asthma, researchers examined the asthmatic protective of bromelain in C57BL/6J mice sensitized with OVA/alum and challenged with 7 days OVA aerosol.

Selected mice included in the study were received sBr 6 mg/kg/0.5 ml or PBS vehicle throughout sensitization.

According to the tested assays, sBr treatment throughout OVA-alum sensitization significantly reduced the development of allergic airway disease (AAD) by balancing the levels of BAL eosinophils and lymphocytes.

Furthermore, sBr decreased the levels of OVA-specific IgE and OVA TET(+) cells by inhibiting the elevated levels of CD11c(+) dendritic cell-associated with inflammation and CD44, a marker of inflammatory disease.

Based on the findings, researchers wrote, "These results provide additional insight into sBr's anti-inflammatory and antiallergic properties and rationale for translation into the clinical arena".

In order to reveal more information about bromelain anti-asthmatic symptoms, researchers investigated the ability of bromelain in reducing the inflammation of preexisting asthma via ovalbumin (OVA)-induced murine model of allergic airway disease (AAD).

Selected mice used in the study received either received phosphate buffered saline (PBS) only or bromelain in PBS as the intervention group.

According to the results at the end of the experiment, bromelain treatment of AAD mice (bromelain group) showed a significant anti-inflammatory activity observed by reduced BAL total leukocytes (P < .05), eosinophils (P < .05), and cellular infiltrates via lung pathology, compared to the control.

Bromelain also significantly reduced BAL CD4+ and CD8+ T cells, an indication of normal immune activity without affecting cell numbers in the spleen or hilar lymph node.

In other words, bromelain inhibited allergic airway inflammation associated with the onset of asthma by inhibiting the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines through modulating the immune function.

Dr. Secor ER Jr, the leads scientist wrote, "The results suggest that bromelain has a therapeutic effect in established AAD, which may translate into an effective adjunctive therapy in patients with similar conditions, such as allergic asthma, who have chosen to initiate treatment after the onset of symptoms".

Taken altogether, bromelain may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of allergic asthma, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of bromelain in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Navy Bean, the Legume which Promotes the Colon Health

By Kyle J. Norton

The Colon or large intestine formed part of the digestive system plays a critical role to remove waste and maintain the fluid and electrolyte balance.

The colon begins at the end of the small intestine and ends at the rectum. The colon consists of four parts: descending colon, ascending colon, transverse colon, and sigmoid colon.

More precisely,
* The function of the descending colon is to store the remains of digested food that will be emptied into the rectum.

* The function of the ascending colon is to carry feces from the cecum superiorly along the right side of our abdominal cavity to the transverse colon.

* In the transverse colon,  water and nutrients are removed, and feces are formed.

* In the sigmoid colon, the feces are stored before leaving the body through the rectum.

Colon Health is an action or process that promotes a healthy colon.

Some researchers suggested that eating a nutrient-dense diet, including more fiber-rich foods is the best way to maintain a healthy colon.

Dr. Andrew T Kunzmann, the lead scientist wrote, "Elevated total dietary fiber intake was associated with a significantly reduced risk of incident distal colorectal adenoma".

And, "individuals consuming the highest intakes of dietary fiber have reduced risks of incident colorectal adenoma and distal colon cancer and that this effect of dietary fiber, particularly from cereals and fruit, may begin early in colorectal carcinogenesis".

The small, white navy bean, also called pea bean or haricot, popular in both dry and green forms, is very popular in Britain and the US, native to Peru. It is now grown and consumed across the world, due to their numerous health benefits.

With an aim to find a natural compound to improve the colonic functioning, researchers examined the effects of cooked navy bean on biomarkers of colon health and inflammation during colitis.

The study included C57BL/6 mice were fed a 20 % navy bean or black bean flour-containing diet or an isoenergetic basal diet (BD) for 2 weeks before the induction of experimental colitis via 7 d dextran sodium sulfate (DSS, 2 % (w/v) in the drinking-water) exposure.

Based on the experiment results,
* Compared with the BD, both navy and black bean diets increased fecal non-digestible fermentable components SCFA and fecal phenolic compound concentrations.

* Injection of both bean diet demonstrated a strong effect on colitis by inhibiting the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and exhibiting the production of the anti-inflammatory cytokines.

* Oxidative stress was significantly decreased in both bean treatment group compared to control.

Believe it or not, both bean diets were found to enhance DSS-induced colonic damage as indicated by an increased histological injury score and apoptosis.

In other words, the navy bean has a strong effect in reducing the inflammation of colitis, However, overdose, and long-term intake in patients with colitis may induce colonic mucosal damage.

Based on the finding, researchers wrote, "bean-containing diets exerted both beneficial and adverse effects during experimental colitis by reducing inflammatory biomarkers both locally and systemically while aggravating colonic mucosal damage".

Taken altogether,  navy bean  may be considered a remedy for the improvement of colon health, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Turmeric Protects the Renal Cells Integrity Against Kidney Disease

By Kyle J. Norton

The kidneys are two bean-shaped organs located just below the rib cage, one on each side of your spine.

The kidneys formed a second detoxed organ in the body after liver not only plays an essential role in regulating electrolytes, blood pressure, maintains acid-base balance, produces hormone calcitriol, renin, and erythropoietin,... but also filters blood that passes into the tubules. In the Urinary system, kidneys reabsorbed some necessary substances back into the blood, while waste, such as urea and ammonium are deposited into pelvis then into the ureter to the bladder for secretion.

Kidney disease is a condition that reduces the function of the kidney acutely or gradually.

Kidney cancer is a medical condition caused by irregular cell growth that starts in the cells on the surface of the inner lining tissue of the kidney due to the alternation of DNA. At the advanced stage, kidney cancer can spread via the bloodstream, leading to the second tumor generally found in the lung.

According to the statistics, approximately  14 percent of the US population suffer some forms of chronic kidney disease (CKD), including 661,000 cases of kidney failure.

Believe it or not, almost half of the individuals with CKD also have diabetes and/or self-reported cardiovascular disease (CVD).

Blood in urine, protein in the urine, kidney stones, kidney infection, kidney pain, hepatitis C and other forms of kidney diseases are signs of kidney disease that can lead CKD.

If you experience some of the aforementioned symptoms that do not heal in a short period of time, please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.

CKD if untreated can lead to kidney failure, the end-stage renal disease (ESRD).

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and for the treatment of flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

With an aim to find a potent compound for the treament of chronic kidney disease (CKD), researchers examined the turmeric anti antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-apoptotic activities on kidney structure and function in rats induced CKD by adenine.

The study included rats induced KD-like renal damage by adenine with three doses of curcumin for 5 weeks.

According to the markers of kidney function and oxidative stress,, urine, renal homogenates on kidney tissue, researchers found that
* Curcumin significantly abates adenine-induced toxic effects such as reduced creatinine clearance.

* Elevated neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin levels induced by adenine associated with kidney damage are also inhibited by the injection curcumin.

* Curcumin also enhanced the levels of antioxidant enzyme in the kidney tissue by raising the urinary N-acetyl-β-D-glucosaminidase activities.

In other words, the bioactive compound isolated from turmeric curcumin strongly reduced renal morphological damage and histopathological markers of inflammation, such as the inflammatory cytokines IL-1β, IL-6 and TNF-α, cystatin C and adiponectin, involved in the formation of fibrosis, and kidney cell apoptosis.

Elevated plasma sclerostin concentrations and oxidative stress in renal homogenates induced by adenine were also inhibited by the presence of curcumin.

Furthermore, in animal experiments, administration of two higher curcumin concentrations, alone or in combination with adenine, also showed similar efficacy in increasing expression of the antioxidative transcription factor (Nrf2) and the activity against oxidative stress in the kidney tissue.

Based on the results, researchers said, "curcumin exhibits salutary effects against adenine-induced CKD in rats by reducing inflammation and oxidative stress via up-regulation of the transcription factor Nrf2".

Taken altogether, turmeric processed abundantly bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of chronic kidney disease, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
