How to Relieve Dysmenorrhea Naturally and Effectively

By Kyle J. Norton

Dysmenorrhea is a painful period during menstruation, affecting many women in their reproductive years.

There are 2 types of dysmenorrhea
* Primary dysmenorrhea is a condition with no underlying cause for menstrual cramps or difficult menstruation occurring just before or during menstruation. The condition affects 90% in the girls in the first 2 years of menstruation caused immature of the reproductive organs.

* Secondary dysmenorrhea is a medical condition characterized by gynecological diseases, including hormone imbalance, endometriosis, fibromas, pelvic inflammatory disease, etc.

Conventionally, most cases of primary dysmenorrhea are treated with NSAIDs nonsteroid anti-inflammatory medicine or birth control pill with an aim to reduce pain without affecting daily activity.

However, the intake of such medicines often cause some side effects. Therefore, if you are currently taking one of the aforementioned drugs, please make sure you know all the side effects for preventive measure.

According to the study, approximately, 43% of premenopausal women in the US have painful menstruation in every menstrual period, and 41% have pain in some periods.

However, by evaluating the characteristics of dysmenorrhea the prevalence rate is actually 25%.

Dr. Giovanni Grandi, the lead scientists in the analysis of the prevalence of menstrual pain in young women said, "Menstrual pain is a very common problem, but the need for medication and the inability to function normally occurs less frequently. Nevertheless, at least one in four women experiences distressing menstrual pain characterized by a need for medication and absenteeism from study or social activities".

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine for the treatment of dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

Researchers on finding a natural compound for the treatment of painful period with no side effects examined the comparative efficacy of ginger on progressive muscle relaxation and symptoms of dysmenorrhoea among nursing students of Pune, Maharashtra

The study included 75 nursing students divided into three groups, two experimental and one control.

Ginger powder 1 gm per dose was administered twice a day with warm water after a meal to the second experimental group during the first three days of their menstruation.

According to the 5-point Likert Scale used to assess the severity of selected symptoms of dysmenorrhoea, ginger powder group showed a significant reduction of symptoms of dysmenorrhoea, particularly in progressive muscle relaxation.

Furthermore, in order to reveal more information about ginger anti painful period activity, researchers compared the effect of mefenamic acid and ginger on pain management in primary dysmenorrhea.

This randomized clinical trial included 122 female students with moderate to severe primary dysmenorrhea randomly allocated to the ginger and mefenamic groups

The mefenamic group received 250 mg capsules every 8 h, and the ginger group received 250 mg capsules every 6 h from the onset of menstruation until pain relief lasted 2 cycles.

According to the results, both mefenamic and ginger group exerted similar effects in reducing symptoms of pain in the second month.

The severity of dysmenorrhea, pain duration, cycle duration, and bleeding volume was not significantly different between groups during the study.

However, the menstrual days were more in the ginger group in the first and second cycle.

Based on the findings, researchers wrote, "Ginger is as effective as mefenamic acid on pain relief in primary dysmenorrhea. Ginger does not have adverse effects and is an alternative treatment for primary dysmenorrhea".

Take all together, ginger may be considered a functional alternative for the prevention and treatment of dysmenorrhea, pending to larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Betanin, the Bioactive Compound Isolated from Beetroot Enhances the Effects of Chemotherapy In Vitro

By Kyle J. Norton

Chemotherapy is an action in which a substance including drugs was used to treat any disease, particularly, in cancer.

In cancers, chemotherapy is a treatment to kill or damage cancer cells in a specific area. Besides chemotherapy, the most common treatment of cancer in conventional medicine are surgery and radiation, depending on the severity of the condition.

The aim of chemotherapy is to cure or control the progression of cancer and improve the quality of life of patients by reducing symptoms.

In other words, chemotherapy is effective to shrink a tumor before surgery or kill the remain cancer cells that cannot completely be removed by radiation and surgery.

Depending on the types and stage and grade of cancer, treatment may be a single chemo drug or several drugs.

Chemotherapy has bee found to induced serious side effects, including fatigue. hair loss, easy bruising and bleeding, infection, anemia, nausea and vomiting, and constipation due to its nature to kill cells (cancer and healthy cells) indiscriminatingly.

Betanin is phytochemicals in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments of Betacyanins, belonging to the group of Betalains, found abundantly in beets, chard, etc.

Researchers with an aim to discover a natural compound or whole food which enhances chemotherapy in the treatment of cancer examined the effects of betanin (BET) co-administration with the potent anticancer drugs e.g. doxorubicin (DOX) in reducing the side effects.

The study included the introduction of a new pH-responsive nanocarrier via decoration of gelatin nanoparticles (GNPs) by (methoxy poly (ethylene glycol)-poly ((2-dimethylamino) ethyl methacrylate-co-itaconic acid) (PGNPs) loaded with 20.5 % of DOX and 16.25of BET that overcomes the restrictions of BET and provides the synergistic effect of DOX@BET.

At the adjusting, the pH of the environment, the stimulated release of DOX and BET from PGNPs showed a significant synergistic effect of DOX@BET not only inhibited the tested cancer cell line MCF-7 but also the side effect caused by DOX.

In other words, the betanin enhanced chemo drug efficacy and inhibited the treatment of drug toxicity.

Based on the findings, Dr. Amjadi S, the lead scientist said, "(The synergistic effect of DOX@BET may contribute to the) developed smart nanocarrier will be a hopeful nanocarrier for cancer therapy".

In order to find out more information about the enhanced chemotherapy of researchers investigated the activity of extract of red beetroot (Beta vulgaris L.), the FDA approved red food color E162 with anticancer drug, doxorubicin (adriamycin) in human prostate cancer cells (PC-3) and estrogen receptor-positive human breast cancer cells (MCF-7).

Individual treatment of doxorubicin and the beetroot extract exhibited a cytotoxic effect in the two tested cancer cell lines in a dose-dependent manner.

The cytotoxicity induced by beetroot extract at the concentration of 29 µg/ml was significantly lower compared to doxorubicin.

Beetroot extract inhibited the cancer proliferation at a trend of gradual decrease of the growth rate of the PC-3 cells (3.7% in 3 days vs. 12.5% in 7 days) compared to doxorubicin completely inhibited the growth of the PC-3 cells in three days at the same concentration level.

In the additional differentiation of the results, researchers found that the cytotoxicity exhibited by the red beetroot extract is attributed to the effects of betanin, the major betacyanin constituent.

Based on the findings, betanin co-administration with chemo drug not only have a profound effect in enhancing the function of the anti-cancer drug but also reduce the side effect induced by conventional medicine.

Taken altogether, betanin used alone or combined with other chemo drugs may be considered medicine for the treatment of cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of betanin in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Honey, the Potential Anti Obesity Functional Food

By Kyle J. Norton

Obesity is a chronic condition characterized by extreme overweight. In other words, obesity is the condition of excess body fat accumulated that cause a negative effect on obese health.

In the US, obesity is an epidemic, as over 68% of the general population are either overweight or obese, leading a medical and economic burden to the country with substantial risen of health care cost and absentees.

Epidemiological studies strongly suggested that obese people have been found to complicate serious diseases, such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and cancer.

According to the BMI calculation, if you have a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or more, you are obese. However, the index sometimes can be misleading due to its limitation in distinguishing between excess fat, muscle, or bone mass.

The cause of obesity is calories dependent. Eating more calories than your body can burn over a long period of time can lead to obesity.

However, some researcher suggested having a sedentary or inactive lifestyle not sleeping enough, poor diet with a higher amount of saturated band trans fat, red meat, processed foods and fewer amount of fruits and vegetables and aging are a number of potential risk factors that cause the onset of obesity.

In other words, if you follow the Western diet with lack of exercise, your risk of obesity is many time higher than people who follow the traditional diet with moderate exercise.

Dr. wrote, "In the past two decades, the relation between dietary patterns and overweight/obesity has been a research focus and a number of results were reported in the research field".

And, "A prudent/healthy dietary pattern and limit intake of the Western/unhealthy dietary pattern should be followed, which helps to keep a healthy body mass".

Honey, the rich golden liquid is the miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The liquid is considered one of the healthy food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.

In the urgency to find a natural whole food for the treatment of obesity, researchers examined the potential of honey consumption in controlling weight gain, including Gelam and Acacia honey from Malaysia.

According to the results from the experiment of Male Sprague-Dawley rats induced obesity by a high-fat diet (HFD) prior to introduction with/without honey or orlistat for four weeks, Gelam honey significantly reduce excess weight gain and adiposity index compared to high-fat diet group.

Additionally, the hallmarks of obese levels of plasma glucose, triglycerides, and cholesterol, plasma leptin and resistin, liver enzymes, renal function test, and relative organ weight caused by injection of a high-fat diet were reduced significantly by Gelam and Acacia honey.

Although orlistat exerted a similar effect comparable to those of honey, it induced hepatotoxicity.

Dr. Samat S, the lead scientist said, "consumption of honey can be used to control obesity by regulating lipid metabolism and appears to be more effective than orlistat".

Furthermore, according to the investigation of the antiobesity benefits in stingless bee honey (SBH) from H. itama in 48 male Sprague Dawley (SD) induced obesity by a high-fat diet, 3 dosages of SBH showed a higher reduction in body mass index (BMI), percentage of body weight gain, adiposity index, and relative organ weight (ROW) compared to typical obesity treatment methods.

Moreover, the levels of liver enzymes (ALT, AST, and ALP), triglycerides and LDL-cholesterol were significantly lower and the level of HDL-cholesterol was significantly higher in SBH-treated groups compared to the control obese group.

In the morphological structure perspective, SBH also decreased the number of adipocyte cells and protected the hepatocytes in the liver against rupturing.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "...the administration of SBH led to an improvement in indicators associated with obesity reduction. SBH also possesses a hepatoprotective potential which can reduce the health risks related to obesity".

Taken altogether, honey, particularly stingless bee honey (SBH) and Gelam and Acacia honey may be considered functional remedies for the treatment of obesity and prevention of obese health complications with no side effects, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Ginger Detoxes Liver Acute Toxicity and Improves Liver Functioning In ViVo, According to Studies

By Kyle J. Norton

The functions of the liver are to filter out blood coming from the digestive tract, before passing it to the rest of the body.

In another world, liver inhibits chemical toxin and other harmful by-products such as medication before distributing the clean blood to nourish the body.

In details, the liver also plays a critical role in bile production for the digestive system in breaking down food, and excretion of bilirubin to clear waste products, production of cholesterol for building the cell wall membrane and vitamin D secretion as well as steroid hormones.

According to the statistics, provided by the World Health Organization, liver diseases affect the largest population worldwide, representing 46% of global diseases.

Out of 35 million people in the world die of chronic diseases, 59% are liver diseases and 59% of the mortality is because of chronic diseases.

Jaundice, persistently abdominal pain and swelling, swelling in the legs and ankles, chronic fatigue and gastrointestinal discomforts, particularly persistent itchy skin,  dark urine color, and pale stool are some common signs and symptoms of liver problems.

Although there are many risk factors associated with the onset of liver diseases, excessive alcohol drinking may be the major cause of liver diseases in the Western world, besides hepatitis C infection.

Dr. Radan Bruha, in the evaluation of alcoholic liver diseases, wrote, "Alcohol consumption is directly associated with liver disease mortality and accounts for elevated social and economic costs. Alcoholic liver disease (ALD) may take the form of acute involvement (alcoholic hepatitis) or chronic liver disease (steatosis, steatohepatitis, fibrosis, and cirrhosis)".

And, " The severity and prognosis of alcohol-induced liver disease depend on the amount, pattern and duration of alcohol consumption, as well as on the presence of liver inflammation, diet, nutritional status and genetic predisposition of an individual. While steatosis is an almost completely benign disease, liver cirrhosis is associated with marked morbidity, mortality and life expectancy shortening. The median survival of patients with advanced cirrhosis is 1-2 years. Severe acute alcoholic hepatitis (AH) is associated with mortality as high as 50%".

The results strongly suggested that excessive alcohol drinking overtime will definitely cause alcoholic liver disease.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine to treat dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

Scientists on finding a natural remedy in improving liver functionings examined the effects of 6-gingerol on the biochemical parameters and ovarian histological improvements in estradiol valerate (EV) induced PCOS rats.

36 female Wistar rats included in the study were divided into 4 groups: control, received normal diet, PCOS control, received 4 mg/kg EV injection for 28 days and two experimental groups, received an EV injection for 28 days and followed by 6-gingerol (200 μg/kg and 400 μg/kg) for 14 days.

Before application of 6-gingerol, group administrated by EV showed an increase of body and ovarian weights, abnormality in serum sex steroid profile and proinflammatory cytokines and a decrease of antioxidant activity associated to the increase of total cholesterol (TC), low-density cholesterol (LDL-C), triglycerides.

However, pretreatment 6-gingerol treatments, particularly the 400 μg/kg dose, restored the alteration back to the normal and improved liver in the regulation of lipid profile.

The findings suggested that 6-gingerol processed beneficial effects in PCOS rats by inhibiting the oxidative stress and restoring biochemical parameters to normal and decreasing the cysts in the ovaries and increasing liver functioning.

In order to reveal more information of ginger effect on the liver, researchers also reviewed the liver protective activity of polyphenol-rich food products (e.g., chokeberry, black and green tea, blueberry, olive oil, rosemary, and ginger) from this xenobiotic hepatotoxicity and treatment of this heavy metal-induced liver damage.

Injection of polyphenols showed a strong effect in binding ions of Cd against Cd in the induction of hepatotoxicity.

Although most studies are conducted in animal models, some of them are derived from experimental models that reflect human exposure. Therefore it is safe to assume that some polyphenol-rich food products may be promising protective agents against Cd hepatotoxicity in humans, including ginger.

Taken altogether, ginger used alone or combined with other polyphenol-rich foods may be considered functional remedies for improving the liver functioning with no side effects, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Bilberry Improves the Nutrigenomic Activity Against the Onset of Chronic Disease In Vivo

By Kyle J. Norton

Nutrigenomic activity is a scientific term that optimizes the interaction of nutrition and genes, especially in the prevention or treatment of disease.

In other words, nutrigenomic activity provided information on how the interaction of certain foods with specific genes that lead to the increased risk of chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, obesity, heart disease, stroke, and certain cancers.

Biologically, nutrigenomics also provided the information molecularly how chemicals found in the diet altered the expression of genes that affect the individual health.

More precisely, nutrigenomics is depending totally on an individual's genetic makeup.

Dr. Praveen Sharma, the lead scientist in the examination of the nutrigenomics and nutrigenetics effect in disease prevention and cure wrote, "Nutrigenomics is providing the effects of ingested nutrients and other food components on gene expression and gene regulation, i.e., diet-gene interaction in order to identify the dietetic components having beneficial or detrimental health effects".

And, " Like Phenylketonuria (PKU) an inborn error of metabolism which is caused by a change (mutation) in a single gene. Diagnosed individuals have to avoid food containing the amino acid phenylalanine".

Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.

The plant berry has been used as herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, and duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, and psoriasis, diabetes, etc.

On finding a natural plant-based compound for the interaction of nutrients and gene expression, researchers compared the nutrigenomic activity on diet supplements of Echinacea angustifolia (EA, 0.10mg/kg live weight as echinacoside; 14 dogs), Vaccinium myrtillus (VM, 0.20mg/kg live weight as anthocyanidin, 13 dogs), Curcuma longa (CL, 6.60mg/kg live weight as curcumin, 18 dogs with arthrosis), and Sylibum marianum (SM, 1.5mg/kg live weight as sylibin, 8 dogs with hepatopathy).

24 healthy dogs selected to the study were fed with a control diet (CT) and the experimental groups received for 60days the same diet supplements aforementioned with nutraceuticals.

VM significantly in inhibited the gene expression associated with the production of a pro-inflammatory cytokine and chemokine such as TNF, IL-8 and PTGS2 prostaglandin-endoperoxide synthase 2,  compared to other treatment groups.

IL-8 is a protein or gene or a chemokine (Small cytokines) produced by immune white blood cell macrophages and other cell types such as epithelial cells, airway smooth muscle cells, and endothelial cells.

Furthermore, VM also inhibited the overexpression of factor-kappa B1 (NFKB1) which plays a critical role in immune response to oxidant-free radicals, ultraviolet irradiation, and bacterial or viral products, leading to diseases associated with inflammation and inappropriate immune cell development or delayed cell growth.

In other words, bilberry modulates the immune response through the needs and protection of the body.

Moreover, bilberry also decreased the plasma level of ceruloplasmin (CuCp) in the regulation of free radical expression such as nitric oxide.

Ceruloplasmin is a glycoprotein produced in the liver, high levels of CuCp is associated with inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and infection such as lymphoma.

In other words, VM promotes the production of antioxidant enzymes in the host body against the induction of oxidative stress through modulating the immune response.

Dr. Sgorlon S, the lead scientist said, " nutraceutical administrations in dogs can be an interesting approach to modulate the immune response in order to improve the health condition of animals".

Taken altogether, bilberry may be considered a function remedy for the improvement of gene expression against diseases involved overexpression of immune response, pending to the validation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Artichoke, the Potential Anti Lymphoma Natural Remedy, According to Researchers

By Kyle J. Norton

Lymphoma originated in the lymphatic system is a type of cancer that affects the white blood cells lymphocytes of the immune system.

Non-Hodgkin's lymphomas are the most common types of lymphoma

According to statistics provided by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, in the US, approximately over 1,30,000 people are either living with or are in remission from, leukemia, lymphoma or myeloma, causing the death of over 9% of all cancer death in 2018.

60 years of age and over, weakened immune system, previous exposure to toxic chemicals, previous chemotherapy or radiation therapy are some of the most common prevalent risk factors of lymphoma.

Interestingly, most people with some of the above risk factor have never developed lymphoma.

Some researchers suggested that people infected by the HIV virus are also at an increased incidence of the disease, probably due to immune suppression.

Dr, K L Grogg, in the concern of immune deficiency in patients infected by the HIV virus in the risk of lymphoma said, The incidence of lymphoma in patients with HIV infection greatly exceeds that of the general population.

And, "The increased risk for lymphoma appears related to multiple factors, including the transforming properties of the retrovirus itself, the immunosuppression and cytokine dysregulation that results from the disease, and, most importantly, opportunistic infections with other lymphotropic herpes viruses such as Epstein–Barr virus and human herpesvirus 8".

Artichoke is a perennial thistle of Cynara cardunculus species of the Cynara genus, belonging to the family Carduoideae native to Southern Europe around the Mediterranean.

The herbal plant has been used in traditional medicine as a liver protective and detoxified agent, and to treat digestive disorders, abdominal pain gas and bloating, etc.

Researchers on finding a natural chemo compound for the treatment of lymphoma examined the anticancer activity of the sesquiterpene lactone, the major constituent of the artichoke leaves extracts.

The aim of the study was to investigate the effects of cynaropicrin, a major compound from the sesquiterpenes on the grown of a number of leukocyte cancer cell lines.

Injection of cynaropicrin exerted potently effect in inhibiting the proliferation of leukocyte cancer cell lines, such as U937.

According to the flow-cytometric assay, cynaropicrin displayed a strong inhibition against the cancer cell line by exhibiting the expression of free radical cytotoxic effect.

The cancer cell apoptosis in the cell cycle arrest at G1/S phase observed by the DNA fragmentation and morphological analyses in U937.

Use the combination of antioxidants such as l-cysteine and N-acetyl-l-cysteine, reactive oxygen species scavengers showed to reduce the cytotoxic activity of the cynaropicrin against U937.

These results clearly suggested that mediation of reactive oxygen species and protein associated with the pro-apoptotic activity were attributed to the effect of cynaropicrin in the inhibition of lymphoma cancer.

Dr. and colleagues after taking into account co and confounders wrote in the final report, "cynaropicrin may be a potential anticancer agent against some leukocyte cancer cells such as lymphoma or leukemia, through pro-apoptotic activity".

Taken altogether, artichoke processed abundantly bioactive compound sesquiterpene lactone cynaropicrin may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of lymphoma, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Honey, The Functional and Natural Depressant

By Kyle J. Norton

Depression is a psychological illness which affects a patient mentally, including thinking and feeling and physically such as loss of interest in physical activity.

The exact causes of depression are not identified. However, some risk factors such as genetic predisposition, personality, stress, and brain chemistry are found to associate with the onset in patients with such a condition.

There are some types of depression which can be classified as follow
1. Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is caused by the change of weather. The mood of patients is affected by the weather and time of the year.

2. Postpartum depression is associated with the mother who can not cope with change following the birth of a child.

3. Depression with psychosis is the most severe case of depression as patients have lived in the illusion and loss of touch with reality.

4. Dysthymia, a persistent depressive disorder, also called dysthymia (dis-THIE-me-uh), is considered a chronic form of mild depression.

Most cases of depression in conventional medicine are treated with medication such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and antidepressants, accompanied by psychotherapy.

If you take any aforementioned medicine, please make sure that you know all the side effects for preventive measure.

Honey, the rich golden liquid is the miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The liquid is considered one of healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.

In the course to find a natural agent for the treatment of depression with no side effects, researchers evaluated the chemical compound chrysin found abundantly in honey against chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS).

The study included a 28-day oral treatment with chrysin (5 or 20mg/kg) in female mice subjected to CUMS, comparing to the effect of fluoxetine.

Before treatment of chrysin, CUMS applied for 28days induced a decrease in brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and nerve growth factor (NGF) levels as well as in the Na(+), K(+)-ATPase activity.

Where brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF ) as a neurotransmitter modulator, plays an important role in neuronal survival and growth as well as in learning and memory.

Nerve growth factor (NGF) is a neurotrophic factor involved in the regulation of growth, maintenance, proliferation, and survival of certain target neurons. Reduced levels of nerve growth factor (NGF) has been found in patients with depression.

Na + /K + -ATPase is an enzyme with a function in maintaining resting potential, affects transport, and regulates cellular volume.

Clinical evidence suggested that Na+, K+-ATPase-induced activation of intracellular signaling participates in the mechanisms underlying patients with mood disorder.

Chrysin (20mg/kg) and fluoxetine improved the BDNF and NGF levels in non-stressed mice and in CUMS treatment mice.

Injection of chrysin and fluoxetine treatments also exerted an antidepressant effect by protecting the CUMS rats against all alterations of the decreased production of antioxidant enzymes and increased oxidative stress.

Based on the findings, Dr. Filho CB, the lead scientists, "the up-regulation of BDNF and NGF levels is a mechanism possibly involved in the antidepressant effect of chrysin in mice".

Furthermore, in order to reveal more information about the honey antidepressant property, researchers examined investigated the effect of chrysin in mice exposed to unpredictable chronic stress (UCS).

In UCS applied for 28 days induced depressive-like rats, oral treatment with chrysin (5 or 20mg/kg, 28 days), similarly to fluoxetine (10mg/kg, positive control) inhibited the decrease in the time of grooming in the splash test and increase in the immobility time.

Chrysin (5 or 20mg/kg, 28 days), similarly to fluoxetine treatment was also found to inhibit the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and elevated corticotropin-releasing hormone and adrenocorticotropic hormone in the UCS-induced depressive-like rats.

Where elevated corticotropin-releasing hormone and adrenocorticotropic hormone was associated with patients with depression.

Moreover, Chrysin (5 or 20mg/kg, 28 days), similarly to fluoxetine treatment also attenuated the hormone deficiency such as 5-HT levels in the HP and elevated enzyme and matrixes such as indoleamine-2,3-dioxygenase, caspase 3 and 9 activities in the PFC and HP associated with depression-like symptoms, induced by UCS.

Taken altogether, honey processed bioactive compound chrysin may be considered a functional remedy for the treatment of depression, pending to the confirmation of larger sample size and multicenter human study
