Banana, the Best Anti Hypertension Functional Fruit, According to Studies

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found an inexpensive whole fruit for the prevention and treatment of hypertension with no side effects, some studies found.

Banana is the common name of a genus of tropical herbaceous plants. It can grow from 3 to 9 m and belongs to the family of the lily and the orchid.

Hypertension is a medical condition characterized by the abnormally high blood pressure. one of the preventable risk factor of heart disease associated with the cluster of metabolic syndrome.

In other words, high blood pressure means the raising the pressure in your heart. the condition can be acute or chronic.

Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps out blood.

Chronic high blood pressure epidemiologically can damage the arteries and causes blood clots to form in the arteries, blocking the blood flow and contributing to the onset of cardiovascular and neuro diseases.

Although certain chronic conditions such as kidney disease are found to associate with chronic hypertension which can only be treated by addressing the causable condition, the syndrome in the Western world are mostly as a result of unhealthy diet and obesity.

According to a joint study led by the Tecnológico de Monterrey, that examined the effects of
Western and Modern Mexican dietary patterns and the incident hypertension in Mexican women, the comparison of participants who followed the diet with loaded heavily with vegetables, fruits and legumes and who follow the Western and Modern Mexican dietary patterns loaded heavily with processed meats, fast foods, and red meat; and finally the third component was loaded heavily with corn tortillas, hot peppers, and sodas suggested that
* The multivariable-adjusted odds of hypertension in the highest quartile of the W pattern were 24% higher than the odds for individuals in the lowest quartile.

 * Women in the highest quartile of the MM pattern had 15% higher odds than women in the lowest quartile.

* And The Fruits & Vegetables (FV) pattern was not significantly associated with hypertension.

These results strongly indicated high blood pressure can be prevented by following a healthy diet with high fruits and vegetables, whole grain and low saturated and trans fat, red meat and processed foods.

On finding a natural chemical compound or whole food for the prevention and treatment of hypertension, researchers evaluate the corosolic acid (CRA) antihypertensive activity, a constituent of banana leaves.

The experiment included Six-week-old male SHR-cp rats, an animal model of metabolic syndrome were fed a high-fat diet containing 0.072% CRA for 14 weeks.

Treatment with CRA lowered blood pressure, which was elevated in control animals, by 10% after 8 weeks, and serum free fatty acids by 21% after 2 weeks.

Oxidative stress markers thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances and 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine in the tested animal were also decreased by 27% and 59%, respectively, after 2 weeks.

Furthermore, CRA treatment also reduced the levels of myeloperoxidase markers, 3-nitrotyrosine, and 3-chlorotyrosine, by 38% and 39%, respectively, after 10 weeks, and decreased the levels of high sensitivity C-reactive protein, markers of inflammation, after 6 weeks.

The presence of a marker of inflammation is the indication of inflammation.

These results clearly suggested that CRA ameliorate hypertension, and oxidative stress caused by the inflammation in SHR-cp rats.

Dr. Yamaguchi Y, the lead scientist said, "CRA can be beneficial for preventing atherosclerosis-related diseases that are an increasing health care problem worldwide".

Moreover, In a human study to test the effect of banana on cold stress-induced hypertension, peak expiratory flow rate and plasma ACE activity, researchers showed that
*Banana treatment reduced the systolic blood pressure (P < 0.005), diastolic blood pressure (P < 0.025) and mean arterial blood pressure (P < 0.005) during cold stress in healthy volunteers compared to controls.

* There was no significant changes in heart rate and peak expiratory flow rate but only significant decrease in plasma angiotensin-converting enzyme activity after banana treatment.

Levels of plasma angiotensin-converting enzyme are high in patients with hypertension.

Dr. Sarkar C, the lead scientist said' "Banana decreased the rise of systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure in healthy volunteers subjected to cold stress test without much effect on heart rate and peak expiratory flow rate".

Taken altogether, banana may be considered a functional fruit for the prevention and treatment of hypertension with no side effects.

Strawberries, The Potential Anti Leukemia (CEM) Functional Fruit, Researchers say

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a whole food which contains abundantly bioactive compounds for the prevention and treatment of leukemia with no side effects, some studies suggested.

Leukemia is a medical and chronic condition of abnormal increase of white blood cells produced by the bone marrow and/or the lymphatic system or the body's blood-forming tissues.

Depending on the malignant granulocytes or lymphocytes, leukemia is classified into myelogenous or lymphoblastic leukemia.

The causes of leukemia are unknown. However, most common risk factors associated with the onset of the disease including radiation exposure, treatment chemotherapy for cancer, smoking, family history of leukemia, and exposure to certain chemicals such as benzene.

Genetic preposition, according to some researchers, also plays a critical role in the prevalent risk of leukemia.

Dr. Nazanin Heidari, the lead scientist in the investigation of the genetic impact in risk of leukemia wrote, "Epigenetic and genetic alterations are two mechanisms participating in leukemia, which can inactivate genes involved in leukemia pathogenesis or progression".

The team continued, inactivation of the genes ASPP1, TP53, IKZF1, and P15, have been correlated with poor prognosis in acute lymphoid leukemia (ALL), chronic lymphoid leukemia (CLL), chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML), respectively. And abnormal genes specifically involved in leukemogenesis such as chromosomal translocations as well as genetic or epigenetic alterations, are involved in leukemogenesis.

Therefore, people who carry the mutated or inactive genes are at an increased risk of the condition.

Strawberry is a genius of Fragaria × ananassa belongs to the family Roseaceae. The fruits have been grown all over the world with a suitable climate for commercial profits and for health benefits.

The major chemical compounds of strawberry include anthocyanin and ellagitannins and p-Hydroxybenzoic acid, p-coumaric acid, ellagic acid, cyanidin-3-glucoside, pelargonidin-3-glucoside, kaempferol, quercetin, and myricetin

On finding a natural ingredient or whole food for the prevention and treatment of leukemia (CEM), researchers at the Indian Institute of Science evaluated the consumption of berry fruits, including strawberries, against oxidative stress-mediated diseases.

In vivo, the methanolic extract of strawberry (MESB) fruits demonstrated a potential activity against leukemia (CEM) cell lines.

In mice models, the extract of the fruit also displayed a cancer therapeutic and chemopreventive potential.

According to the tested assay, MESB  induced cytotoxicity in cancer cells, irrespective of origin, though its antioxidant properties in a concentration- and time-dependent manner.

Furthermore, according to the results at the end of the experience, MESB treatment affected tumor cell proliferation by activating apoptosis with no side effects.

In-depth analysis of the effect of the extract, researchers found that MESB induces cancer cell apoptosis through the enhancing the function of the tumor suppressor gene p70 in the intrinsic pathway of apoptosis bypassed the mutated tumor suppressor gene p53.

Dr. Somasagara RR, the lead author said, "strawberry fruits possess both cancer preventive and therapeutic values".

Taken altogether, strawberries with the abundant bioactive compound may be considered a functional fruit for the prevention and treatment of leukaemia (CEM) with no side effects.

Manuka Honey, the Best Anti-influenza Functional Food

By Kyle J. Norton

Honey may have a profound effect in reducing the risk and treatment of influenza, some scientists suggested.

Influenza, also known as the flu, is an infectious disease caused by an influenza virus.

There are 3 types of flu influenza: A, B, and C. the influenza virus  A and B are considered seasonal flu that causes sniffling, aching, coughing, and running and stuffy nose and fever to over 20% of general population.

Influenza virus types C tends to cause mild upper respiratory infections, similar to those of cold.

Healthy individuals who have influenza are usually recovered within one week.

However, people with immature and weakened immune system such as young children under age 5, adults older than age 65 residents of nursing homes and other long-term care facilities, chronic illnesses, such as asthma, heart disease, kidney disease, liver disease and diabetes are not only  associated with the risk of influenza but also increase the risk of influenza deadly complication.

Pregnant women and women up to two weeks postpartum due to change of immune system and other organs have been found to make a woman more prone to influenza and influenza complications.

Some researchers also suggested that obese people are also at a higher risk of the onset of influenza.

Dr. Green WD, the lead author at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill suggested that obese individual associated with the impairment of the adaptive immune response at substantial risk of influenza.

The doctor team in the study " Obesity Impairs the Adaptive Immune Response to Influenza Virus" wrote, "Given the dramatic rise in obesity over the past few decades, this increased risk for influenza infection poses a serious public health threat because nearly 500 million adults and children worldwide are classified as obese".

"Obesity impairs the immune response to influenza and influenza vaccination through alterations of the cellular immune system. Compared with vaccinated healthy-weight adults, vaccinated obese adults have twice the risk of influenza or influenza-like illness despite equal serological response to vaccination".

Most common symptoms of influenza are high fever, runny nose, sore throat, muscle pains, headache, coughing, sneezing, and persistent fatigue.

Honey is the miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The rich golden liquid It is considered one of healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.

On finding a natural ingredient and whole food for the prevention and treatment of influenza, researchers at the joint study led by the Nagasaki University the antiviral activities of honey samples were evaluated using MDCK cells.

Application of Manuka honey efficiently inhibited influenza virus replication which is related to its virucidal effects.

Manuka honey at the dose of 3.13 mg/mL also improved the function of zanamivir or oseltamivir by reducing the maximum concentration of effectiveness to nearly 1/1000th  for their single use.

Dr.Watanabe K, the lead scientist said, "honey, in general, and particularly Manuka honey, has potent inhibitory activity against the influenza virus, demonstrating a potential medicinal value.

Moreover, by the re-examining the anti-influenza effect of Luatang honey, researchers suspected that the efficacy may be associated with the presence of the methylglyoxal (MGO), a key component of Manuka honey.

By evaluating the anti-influenza viral activity of MGO and its potential in combination treatments with neuraminidase (NA) inhibitors, researchers found that
* Injection of MGO inhibited influenza virus A/WSN/33 replication 50% inhibitory concentration = 240 ± 190 μM; 50% cytotoxic concentration = 1.4 ± 0.4 mM; selective index (SI) = 5.8, which is related to its virucidal effects.

* MGO exerted a promising activity against various influenza strains.

* MGO increases the effect of NA inhibitors by decreasing the to the ∼1/100(th) of their single usage.

* MGO also demonstrates a synergistic effect with NA inhibitor against the oseltamivir-resistant virus.

Taken altogether, Luatang honey processed bioactive compound methylglyoxal (MGO) may be considered a functional food for the prevention and combined with primary therapy for the treatment of influenza with no side effects, pending to a larger and multi=centers human study.

Ginger, The Potent Anti Obesity Functional Food

By Kyle J Norton

Ginger may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of obesity without inducing side effects, some scientists found.

Obesity is medical disease associated with extreme overweight.

In other words, obesity is the accumulation of excess fat to the extent that it may have an adverse effect on patient health.

According to the Body Mass Index(BMI), a BMI between 25 to 29.9 is considered overweight, and a BMI of over 30 is an indication of obesity.

According to the statistic, 68% of the American population is either overweight or obese.

What causes obesity? Some researchers suggested that too much calories consumption and lack of physical exercise are the 2  main causes of obesity in once healthy individuals.

Some scientists indicated, there is no coincidence but a close correlation between the onset of obesity in a large percentage of American and the promotion of the Western diet in the past few decades.

Dr. Bortolin RC, the lead researcher in the obese team in the joint study led by the Instituto de Ciências Básicas da Saúde-Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS in the examine the new animal diet based on human Western diet said, "Obesity is a metabolic disorder that predisposes patients to numerous diseases and has become a major global public health concern".

And,  " diet, and not the obese state, was the major driving force behind gut microbiota changes. Moreover, the marked dysbiosis observed in CAF-fed rats might have resulted from the presence of several additives present in the CAF diet, or even a lack of essential vitamins and minerals".

These results strongly suggested that the Western diet alters the gut microbiota composition (dysbiosis) probably due to substances found in the Western diet foods, that are not found  in other diets, compared to the group treated with HFD developed the greatest dysbiosis independent of obesity

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine to treat dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

On finding natural ingredients or whole food for the treatment of obesity researchers examine the traditional use of ginger in an animal model.

Application of ginger in vivo and vitro demonstrated a potential anti-obesity effect in regulating the PPARγ signaling pathway in adipocytes in the initiation of obesity,

Diet-induced obesity was attenuated in C57BL/6J mice treated with dietary ginger extract (GE)also exhibited the increase of energy expenditure.

GE also exerted an anti-obesity effect through promoting the increased the number of Types I muscle fibers, running endurance capacity and upregulated PPARδ-targeted gene expression in skeletal muscle
Furthermore, the cellular respiration assay also revealed that pretreating cultured skeletal muscle myotubes with GE increased palmitate-induced oxygen consumption rate, which suggested an increase in cellular fatty acid catabolism, another anti-obesity activity.

After taking into account co and confounders, researchers said, "6-Shogaol and 6-gingerol (the ginger bioactive constituents)may be responsible for the regulatory effects of dietary ginger on PPARδ signaling".

Moreover, additional investigation of ginger exerts protective on obesity and its complications, researchers at the showed that gingerenone A, a bioactive compound isolated from ginger had the most potent inhibitory effect on adipogenesis and lipid accumulation in 3T3-L1 cells among ginger components at a single concentration (40 μM).

In vitro data, GA attenuates diet-induced obesity (DIO) by reducing fat mass in mice, accompanied by a modulation of fatty acid metabolism via activation of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) in stimulating weight loss, in vitro and in vivo.

Dr.Suk S the lead authors said at the final report, " GA may be used as a potential therapeutic candidate for the treatment of obesity and its complications by suppressing adipose expansion and inflammation".

Taken altogether, ginger processed abundant bioactive compounds may be considered a functional food in stimulating weight loss in the obese subjects.

Bilberry Balances the Gut Microbiota for Optimal Health, According to Studies

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a natural and herbal remedy for the improvement of digestive gut microbiota for health optimization, according to studies.

Gut microbiota, or gastrointestinal microbiota, the complex community of microorganisms in our digestive tracts plays a critical role in a variety of metabolic functions, including produced vitamins, synthesized all essential and nonessential amino acids, and carried out biotransformation of bile.

Gut microbiota protects the intestinal structures and functions by attaching to the gut wall against the entry of pathogenic, enteroinvasive bacteria into the epithelial cells.

In the immune perspective, gut microbiota protects the intestines by alerting the immune response against foreign invasion through specific receptors, leading to an immune system in inducing the proinflammatory cytokines.

However, the imbalance of digestive gut microbiota has been found to induce a number of diseases, syndromes, and functional aberrations, including inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and wider systemic manifestations of disease such as obesity, and type 2 diabetes.

Imbalanced gut microbiota is found in obese patients, compared to healthy weight individuals.

Dr. Kyle J. Wolf, the lead scientist in the investigation the link of obesity and gut microbiota, wrote, "
In recent years it has been definitively shown that microbiota in the gastrointestinal tract is altered in obese individuals".

And, "Normal humans and mice have 60% to 80% Firmicutes (which are primarily nonculturable, butyrate-producing Clostridium cluster XIVa) and 20% Bacteroidetes (Cytophaga-Flavobacterium-Bacteroides). However, the obese mouse model (ob/ob) had a 50% reduction in Bacteroidetes and an increase in Firmicutes. A similar decrease in Bacteroidetes and increase in Firmicutes is also seen when C57BL/6 mice are fed a high-fat (HF) diet".

The results in the mice model study strongly linked the Western diet and the risk of imbalanced gut microbiota in facilitating the onset of obesity.

Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.

The plant has been used as herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, and duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, and psoriasis, diabetes, etc.

Scientists on finding a natural ingredient for the improvement of digestive system functioning in the elderly examined the bilberry anthocyanin extract consumption and healthy aging and the effects on intestinal barrier function and digestive enzyme activity.

In the aging rats selected to the study, injection of medium-dose bilberry anthocyanin at 20 mg per kg bw per day) showed to optimizing the intestinal function.

Analyzing the gut microbiota, consumption of bilberry anthocyanin balanced the levels of bacteria in the intestine by increasing the good bacterias such as Aspergillus oryzae, Lactobacillus, Bacteroides, Clostridiaceae-1, the Bacteroidales-S24-7- and the Lachnospiraceae_NK4A136_group) and decreasing the levels of harmful bacterias, such as Verrucomicrobia and Euryarchaeota.

However. injection of any dose higher than 20 mg per kg displayed the alternation of some intestinally beneficial bacteria in an adverse way.

Furthermore, besides improving the levels of gut microbiota, consumption of bilberry anthocyanin also induced the changes in short-chain fatty acids and the intestinal mucosal barrier, correlatedly.

In other words, injection of the extract consumption also improved the decreased activity of digestive enzymes in breaking down the proteins into amino acids due to aging.

Dr. Li J, the lead scientist wrote, "Bilberry anthocyanin extract consumption is a potential approach for assisting healthy aging".

Moreover, in order to reveal more information about bilberry gut microbiota effects, researchers compared bilberries and cloudberries, the 2 berries on the.intestinal immune responses and gut microbiota.

Injection of bilberry not only reduced the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines through immunomodulatory activity but also improved the balance of the gut microbiota compared to cloudberries and control group.

Interestingly, cloudberry inhibited and bilberry exhibited the expression of energy metabolism-related genes in the intestinal mucosa.

Additionally, the microbial profiles of cloudberry-fed mice clustered together associated with small adenoma size compared to bilberry group.

The findings suggested that bilberry consumption demonstrated potential digestive health by attenuating of intestinal inflammation, improving microbial profiles, and exhibiting mucosal energy metabolism.

Taken altogether, bilberry processed a high amount bioactive compound may be considered a functional remedy for optimizing the bodily health by balancing the levels of gut microbiota.

Phytochemical Piperine, the Anti Metabolic Dysfunctions in Obese Patients

By Kyle J. Norton

Piperine may be considered a natural ingredient for the treatment of metabolic dysfunction in obese patients, some scientists suggested.

Piperine is a phytochemical alkaloid in the class of organosulfur compound, found abundantly in white and black pepper, long pepper, etc.

Obesity is a medical condition characterized by excess body fat accumulated in the body over time.

While overweight is a condition of excess body weight relative to the height.

According to the Body Mass Index(BMI), a BMI between 25 to 29.9 is considered overweight, while a BMI of over 30 is an indication of obesity. According to the statistic, 68% of the American population is either overweight or obese, a leading cause of metabolic dysfunction.

In other words, obesity is a metabolic disorder that predisposes patients to numerous diseases which not only cause a financial burden to the health care system but also increase the reduction of quality of life of the patients.

A metabolic dysfunction is caused either by the abnormal chemical reactions or disruption of chemical production in the body, altering the normal metabolic process.

Some researchers suggested that obesity's metabolic dysfunction may be a result of the liver or pancreas do not function properly due to fat accumulated in the organs.

There is no coincidence that the widespread of obesity over the past several decades are correlated to the promotion of the Western diet. Some researchers firmly suggested that diet rich in saturated and trans fat, red meat and processed foods and less in fruits and vegetables and whole grain is associated with the onset of obesity.

Dr. Bortolin RC, the lead scientists in the study to examine the metabolic parameters and gut microbiota changes in rat fed with the Western diet suggested: "diet, and not the obese state, was the major driving force behind gut microbiota changes" and "WD-fed rats developed obesity and obesity-related comorbidities independent of major alterations in gut microbiota composition (dysbiosis), whereas CAF-fed rats developed the greatest dysbiosis independent of obesity".

The result clearly stated that long-term intake of the Western diet induces metabolic syndrome and obesity. In other words, Obesity is not the cause of metabolic dysfunction.

On finding a natural ingredient or whole food for the prevention and treatment of widespread obesity-induced metabolic dysfunctions in the Western world, researchers examine the antimetabolic phytochemical Piperine isolated from the black pepper.

The randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, 8-week trial included the assessment of the efficacy of metabolic changes versus a placebo.

In a total of 86 overweight subjects selected to the study, 41 patients (2/14 F/M; age 43.7 ± 8.5; BMI 30.3 ± 3.5 kg/m(2)) were assigned to the supplemented group and 45 (29/16; age 40.7 ± 10.2; BMI 30.0 ± 2.7) to the control group.

At the end of 8 weeks, the supplement group showed a decrease of levels of a hormone produced by adipose cells that regulates energy balance by inhibiting hunger. High levels of leptin hormone is an indication of leptin resistance, found in the overweight and obese patients.

The levels of a hormone associated with the stimulated appetite increased food intake and promoted fat storage also decreased in the supplement group. Hormone ghrelin is found abundantly in the overweight and obese subjects.

Furthermore, the supplement group also showed a decrease of inflammation observed by the levels of C-reactive protein and an increased resting energy expenditure significantly, compared to placebo.

Compared to the decreased significantly levels of adiponectin in the placebo, the supplement group also showed an increase in the hormone protein that regulates glucose levels as well as fatty acid breakdown.

These results suggested that the supplement group demonstrates a greater change of metabolic dysfunction compared to the placebo.

In other words, introducing piperine into the overweight and obese diet might be useful for the treatment of obesity-related inflammatory metabolic dysfunctions.

Additionally, in order to understand the effect of piperine on overweight and obese insulin resistance, researchers evaluated the bioactive chemical activity in mice feeding a high-fat diet (HFD) for 13 weeks.

Before injecting the mice with piperine, researchers found that mice fed with high-fat-diet display elevated plasma concentrations of insulin and glucose and hepatic lipid levels.

Administration of piperine (50 mg/kg body weight) only normalized the concentrations of insulin and glucose and hepatic lipid levels but also increased the levels of adiponectin and inhibited the protein which plays an important role in mediating lipogenesis, fatty acid oxidation and insulin signaling in the livers of mice.

In gene observation, piperine injection also increased the expression of carnitine palmitoyltransferase 1 (CPT1) gene involved the regulation of fatty acid oxidation in the liver, an indication of resist weight gain.

Dr. Choi S, the lead researcher suggested, piperine significantly decreased insulin resistance in mice fed with high-fat diet by increasing the levels of adiponectin and activating the pathway associated with fatty acid oxidation.

Taken altogether, piperine may be considered a bioactive compound for the protection of overweight and obese against the inflammatory and metabolic dysfunctions and weight gain without inducing any side effects

Phytochemical Indole-3-carbinol, the Potent Anti Prostate Cancer Plant Base Compound

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a bioactive compound isolated from the cruciferous vegetable for the prevention and treatment of prostate cancer with no side effects, according to studies.

Indole-3-carbinol is a phytochemical in the class of Indoles, by the breaking down of the glucosinolate glucobrassicin, found abundantly in cabbage, kale, Brussels sprouts, rutabaga, mustard greens, broccoli, etc.

Prostate cancer is a medical and chronic condition in which the cells of the prostate has become cancerous due to the alternation of the cells DNA.

Most prostate cancers are slow growing and enlarged prostate and prostate cancer may be detected during the Physical (rectum) exams.

Primary prostate cancer normally starts from the cell on the surface of the inner lining of the prostate tissue and gradually spread to the deeper part of the prostate.

At the early stage, patients may not experience any symptoms, However, at the advanced stage, prostate cancer can induce symptoms of blood in the urine, frequent urination and urinary difficulty.

The cancer cells at this stage can also travel a distance away from the prostate to invade other healthy tissue and organ, leading secondary metastasis tumors.

According to the statistic, the 5-year survival rate for local and regional (stage 0 and 1) stages prostate cancer is nearly 100%.

Therefore, men who are at higher risk of prostate cancer due to family history and increase in age and inherited gene changes should have their prostate gland checked annually.

Believe or not, more than 80% of prostate cancers are diagnosed in men who are 65 or older.

Dr. Roberto Fabiani, the lead scientist at the University of Perugia suggested that people who follow the Western diet pattern are at increased risk of prostate cancer onset.

According to the results from the review of 12 observational studies included in the meta-analysis which identified a “Healthy pattern” and a “Western pattern”, he said, "The Healthy pattern was not related to PC risk (OR = 0.96; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.88–1.04) while the Western pattern significantly increased it (OR = 1.34; 95% CI: 1.08–1.65)".

In other words, by a change of diet from high in saturated and trans fat, red meat and processed foods to diet high in fruits and vegetables and whole grain,  the risk of prostate cancer can be reversed.

In order to reaffirm the epidemiological evidence which suggested that intake of cruciferous vegetable intake is associated with a reduced risk of prostate cancer, researchers at the Oregon State University, Corvallis assessed the bioactive compound indole-3-carbinol against the onset of prostate cancer.

In vitro and in vivo. application of indole-3-carbinol inhibit prostate cancer by both blocking initiation and suppressing prostate cancer progression. these results were associated with the induction of phases I and II detoxification pathways.

Injection of indole-3-carbinol inhibited the cell signaling pathways associated with cancer cells proliferation and survival.

Recently, indole-3-carbinol derivatives induced cancer cytotoxicity through induction of free radical expression.

In the laboratory, I3C can induce G1 cell-cycle arrest and apoptosis in prostate cancer cells.

Futhermore, I3C and its derivative dimeric product 3,3'-diindolylmethane (DIM) inhibited the genes associated with the control of cell cycle, cell proliferation, signal transduction, and other cellular processes in prostate cancer cell lines.

Dr. Sarkar FH, the lead scientist, wrote in the final report of the experiment, "Because there is no effective treatment strategy for hormone-dependent and, most importantly, hormone-independent and metastatic prostate cancer, our strategies to sensitize prostate cancer cells to a chemotherapeutic agent by I3C and DIM is a novel breakthrough that could be used for devising novel therapies for prostate cancer".

More importantly, Wayne State University School of Medicine, in the study to confirm that a diet rich in fruits and vegetables provides phytochemicals, launched an investigation to examine the anticancer effect of indole-3-carbinol (I3C).

According to the study, I3C inhibits the growth of PC-3 prostate cancer cells
* through the Induction of G1 cell cycle arrest.

* Promoted the expression of regulators associated with cell cycle progression at G1 and S phase and proteins associated with cancer cell apoptosis.

* Inhibited proteins associated with the progression of cell cycle division

* Inhibited protein in the promotion of proteins associated with cancer cell cycle division.

Taken altogether, the plant base  Indole-3-carbinol isolated from the cruciferous vegetable may be used for the prevention and treatment of prostate cancer with no side effects.
