Phytochemical Indole-3-carbinol, the Potent Anti Prostate Cancer Plant Base Compound

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a bioactive compound isolated from the cruciferous vegetable for the prevention and treatment of prostate cancer with no side effects, according to studies.

Indole-3-carbinol is a phytochemical in the class of Indoles, by the breaking down of the glucosinolate glucobrassicin, found abundantly in cabbage, kale, Brussels sprouts, rutabaga, mustard greens, broccoli, etc.

Prostate cancer is a medical and chronic condition in which the cells of the prostate has become cancerous due to the alternation of the cells DNA.

Most prostate cancers are slow growing and enlarged prostate and prostate cancer may be detected during the Physical (rectum) exams.

Primary prostate cancer normally starts from the cell on the surface of the inner lining of the prostate tissue and gradually spread to the deeper part of the prostate.

At the early stage, patients may not experience any symptoms, However, at the advanced stage, prostate cancer can induce symptoms of blood in the urine, frequent urination and urinary difficulty.

The cancer cells at this stage can also travel a distance away from the prostate to invade other healthy tissue and organ, leading secondary metastasis tumors.

According to the statistic, the 5-year survival rate for local and regional (stage 0 and 1) stages prostate cancer is nearly 100%.

Therefore, men who are at higher risk of prostate cancer due to family history and increase in age and inherited gene changes should have their prostate gland checked annually.

Believe or not, more than 80% of prostate cancers are diagnosed in men who are 65 or older.

Dr. Roberto Fabiani, the lead scientist at the University of Perugia suggested that people who follow the Western diet pattern are at increased risk of prostate cancer onset.

According to the results from the review of 12 observational studies included in the meta-analysis which identified a “Healthy pattern” and a “Western pattern”, he said, "The Healthy pattern was not related to PC risk (OR = 0.96; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.88–1.04) while the Western pattern significantly increased it (OR = 1.34; 95% CI: 1.08–1.65)".

In other words, by a change of diet from high in saturated and trans fat, red meat and processed foods to diet high in fruits and vegetables and whole grain,  the risk of prostate cancer can be reversed.

In order to reaffirm the epidemiological evidence which suggested that intake of cruciferous vegetable intake is associated with a reduced risk of prostate cancer, researchers at the Oregon State University, Corvallis assessed the bioactive compound indole-3-carbinol against the onset of prostate cancer.

In vitro and in vivo. application of indole-3-carbinol inhibit prostate cancer by both blocking initiation and suppressing prostate cancer progression. these results were associated with the induction of phases I and II detoxification pathways.

Injection of indole-3-carbinol inhibited the cell signaling pathways associated with cancer cells proliferation and survival.

Recently, indole-3-carbinol derivatives induced cancer cytotoxicity through induction of free radical expression.

In the laboratory, I3C can induce G1 cell-cycle arrest and apoptosis in prostate cancer cells.

Futhermore, I3C and its derivative dimeric product 3,3'-diindolylmethane (DIM) inhibited the genes associated with the control of cell cycle, cell proliferation, signal transduction, and other cellular processes in prostate cancer cell lines.

Dr. Sarkar FH, the lead scientist, wrote in the final report of the experiment, "Because there is no effective treatment strategy for hormone-dependent and, most importantly, hormone-independent and metastatic prostate cancer, our strategies to sensitize prostate cancer cells to a chemotherapeutic agent by I3C and DIM is a novel breakthrough that could be used for devising novel therapies for prostate cancer".

More importantly, Wayne State University School of Medicine, in the study to confirm that a diet rich in fruits and vegetables provides phytochemicals, launched an investigation to examine the anticancer effect of indole-3-carbinol (I3C).

According to the study, I3C inhibits the growth of PC-3 prostate cancer cells
* through the Induction of G1 cell cycle arrest.

* Promoted the expression of regulators associated with cell cycle progression at G1 and S phase and proteins associated with cancer cell apoptosis.

* Inhibited proteins associated with the progression of cell cycle division

* Inhibited protein in the promotion of proteins associated with cancer cell cycle division.

Taken altogether, the plant base  Indole-3-carbinol isolated from the cruciferous vegetable may be used for the prevention and treatment of prostate cancer with no side effects.

Phytochemical Allicin, The Natural Anti High Blood Pressure Bioactive Ingredient

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a bioactive ingredient which can normalize the blood pressure without inducing any side effects, according to studies.

Allicin is phytochemical containing sulfur in the class of organosulfur compound, found abundantly in onion and garlic.

Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps out blood.

High blood pressure is a condition of abnormally high blood pressure, leading to the raising pressure in your heart.

If it stays high over time it can cause hardening and stiffening arterial wall,, a major risk factor of heart diseases.

The ideal blood pressure is more than 120 over 80 and less than 140 over 90 (120/80-140/90), according to the consensus.

Abnormal high blood pressure, depending on the how high of the numbers, patients may experience symptoms of a headache to a severe headache., fatigue, vision problems. However, in severe cases, high blood pressure can also induce chest pain, difficulty breathing, irregular heartbeat and confusion.

Untreated high blood pressure, epidemiologically can cause complications of retinopathy, lead to damage to the retinal or bleeding in the eye, blurred vision and complete loss of vision.

Blood pressure medications have undoubtedly prevented many deaths from heart disease in the past 30 years, but they have many side effects such as damaging the kidney.

If you can control your diet, such as making changes to lifestyle, maintaining ideal weight and diet with low salt, you could do just fine without the drugs.

According to the hypertension clinical guideline from the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) usefully recommends regular aerobic exercise and reduction of salt, alcohol, and smoking, and advocates ‘healthy, low-calorie diets' for ‘overweight individuals with raised blood pressure'".

This suggestion once again, highlighted that high blood pressure can be prevented by a change to a healthy lifestyle.

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of high blood pressure with no side effects, scientists at the Clinical Research Center looked into the antihypertensive effect of a popular garlic preparation containing 1.3% allicin at a large dose (2400 mg).

Nine patients with rather severe hypertension (diastolic blood pressure > or = 115 mm Hg) were included in the study.

Application of the preparation reduced the sitting blood pressure by 7/16 (+/- 3/2 SD) mm Hg at peak effect approximately 5 hours after the dose, with a significant decrease in diastolic blood pressure (p < 0.05) from 5-14 hours after the dose.

No significant side effects were reported. The findings strongly indicate that this garlic preparation can reduce blood pressure.

Futhermore, in order to compare the antihypertensive effect of the different fractions of garlic, researchers investigated the hypotensive action of time-released garlic powder tablets (Allicor) vs regular garlic pills (Kwai).

84 men with mild or moderate arterial hypertension have participated in the study.

After an 8-week placebo treatment run-in phase, patients were randomized either to 600 mg Allicor (n=30) or to placebo (n=20) daily for 8 weeks. In addition, in the open-label branch, patients received either 2400 mg Allicor daily (n=18) or 900 mg Kwai daily (n=16).

Allicor treatment (600 mg daily) resulted in a reduction of both systolic and diastolic blood pressures by 7.0 mm Hg (95% confidence interval (95% CI): 5.3-8.7) and 3.8 mm Hg (95% CI: 2.7-4.8), respectively. Increasing the Allicor dosage to 2400 mg daily did not provide any additional benefit.

Treatment with Kwai resulted in the same decrease in systolic blood pressure (5.4 mm Hg, 95% CI: 1.9-8.8) as that seen with Allicor, but no decrease in diastolic blood pressure.

In the depth analysis, researchers found that different effects of Allicor and Kwai on diastolic blood pressure may be associated with the prolonged action of Allicor.

Dr. Sobenin IA, wrote in the final report, "The results of this study show that time-released garlic powder tablets are more effective for the treatment of mild and moderate arterial hypertension than are regular garlic supplements".

Taken altogether,. allicin, a bioactive compound of garlic may be used for the prevention and treatment of high blood pressure with no side effects

Manuka Honey, The Antioxidants Functional Sweety

By Kyle J. Norton

Honey may be the next pharmaceutical target to identify the single ingredient medicine for the treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, some scientists suggested.

Oxidative stress is a result of an imbalance of the ratio of free radicals and antioxidants in the body.

Free radicals are highly reactive molecules with an unpaired electron on the outer ring of the atom.
Due to its nature to become stable, free radicals readily to donate or steal an electron from other molecules, leading to the chain of domino's effect that can not be stopped until either the electrons are paired or inhibited by antioxidants.

This chain of reaction is the cause of oxidative stress, a condition is associated with either overexpression of free radicals or depletion of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host organs.

Overexpression of free radicals is known to cause damage in contributing to the etiology many chronic health problems such as cardiovascular and inflammatory disease, cataract, and cancer.
Antioxidants, on the other hand, are stable molecules with a unique function in the inhibition of oxidation.

Dr. V. Lobo, the lead author in the study "Free radicals, antioxidants, and functional foods: Impact on human health" wrote, " A balance between free radicals and antioxidants is necessary for proper physiological function. If free radicals overwhelm the body's ability to regulate them, a condition known as oxidative stress ensues", and

"Free radicals thus adversely alter lipids, proteins, and DNA and trigger a number of human diseases. Hence application of an external source of antioxidants can assist in coping this oxidative stress. Synthetic antioxidants such as butylated hydroxytoluene and butylated hydroxyanisole have recently been reported to be dangerous for human health".

These results suggested that regardless of the causes of the overexpression of free radicals, intake of dietary sources of antioxidants from a supplement, herbs, fruits, and vegetables can be beneficial in restoring the healthy ratio of free radicals and antioxidants and preventing the onset of oxidative stress.

Honey is the miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The rich golden liquid It is considered one of healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.

In order to understand the honey antioxidant activity which has been under intensified study by the science community, a joint study led by the researchers conducted was conducted in an animal model.

Ethanol-induced gastric ulcers in rats were randomly assigned to control, ethanol (ulcer), omeprazole, and manuka honey.

Honey treated rats displayed a clinically significant decrease of the ulcer index by completely protected the mucosa from lesions and preserved gastric mucosal glycoprotein.

Application of manuka honey also decreased gastric mucosal MDA, the marker of oxidative stress and plasma TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6 concentrations, the set of proinflammatory cytokines produced by the ethanol injection.

The results were attributed to the manuka honey in stimulating the production of antioxidant enzymes which were suppressed by the injection of ethanol in the tested rats.

The finding suggested that manuka honey exerted a strong antioxidant activity by balancing the ratio of free radicals and antioxidant enzymes in the treatment group.

In other words, manuka honey inhibited the oxidative stress caused by overexpression of free radicals in the initiation of the onset of the ulcer.

Further differentiation to reaffirm the effects of manuka honey in the inhibition of gastric ulcer in the rat model, researchers examined three different concentrations of honey applied to the tested rats.

During the experiment, researchers found that all 3 different concentration display a strong effect in It reducing the mucosal myeloperoxidase activity, lipid peroxidation (MDA), and the inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6) compared to the untreated control group.

In other words, manuka honey protects the rat stomach by inhibiting the overexpression free radical and proinflammatory cytokines in inducing oxidative stress.

Application manuka honey also showed a significant increase in enzymatic (GPx and SOD) and nonenzymatic (GSH) antioxidants which were reduced due to ulcer and levels of the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10.

The Flow cytometry assay also indicated that treatment of rats with manuka honey has normalized cell cycle distribution and significantly lowered apoptosis in gastric mucosa.

The information collected strong support the use of manuka honey for the treatment of chronic ulcer and preservation of mucosal glycoproteins.

Dr. Almasaudi SB wrote in the final report, "Its (manuka honey) effects are due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that resulted in a significant reduction of the gastric mucosal MDA, TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6 and caused an elevation in IL-10 levels.

Taken altogether, there is no doubt that manuka honey high in antioxidants can be considered a functional food for the prevention and combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress.

Ginger, the Pungent Spice Which inhibits the Onset and Progression of Arthritis

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a whole food which processes a significant effect in reducing and treatment of arthritis with no side effects, some studies found.

Arthritis is a class of inflammatory diseases that affect the joints.

Most common symptoms of arthritis are joint pain and stiffness.

However, some patients with arthritis may also experience symptoms of redness, warmth, swelling, and decreased the range of motion of the affected joints.

The most common causes of arthritis are the improper healthy of the joint injury in the younger age and infections that affect the integrity of the cartilage.

RA, an autoimmune disorder is a type of arthritis caused by immune system mistakenly attacks the joints tissues of the body.

The prevalent risk factors associated with the onset of the disease include the increase in age, family history, gender, ethnicity, and obesity.

Some researchers suggested that people who follow the Western diet with high saturated and trans fat, red meat and processed foods and fewer fruits and vegetables and whole grains are also at the increased risk of arthritis.

According to the study published in the journal JCI Insight on April 19, by the University of Rochester Medical Center in New York, after 3 months of feeding mice a high-fat diet similar to that of a western “cheeseburger and milkshake” regimen, the mice became obese and diabetic and fat percentage was double compared to mice fed with a healthy, low-fat diet.

The contribution of overweight of obesity caused by long-term intake of the Western diet may contribute to the link of obesity in risk of arthritis.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine to treat dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

With an aim to reconfirm the tradition medicine use of ginger for the treatment of chronic inflammatory diseases, the research team at the examine the turmeric (rich in curcuminoids) and ginger (rich in gingerols and shogaols) rhizomes effect in patients with arthritis rat adjuvant-induced arthritis (AIA) both plants at the dose 200 mg/kg body weight were orally administrated.

Turmeric and ginger exerted a significantly suppressed (but with different degrees) the incidence and severity of arthritis by increasing the production of anti-inflammatory and decreasing pro-inflammatory cytokines.

Both turmeric and ginger also restored the antioxidant enzymes in the rats.

In the anti-arthritic activity, turmeric was more effective compared to those of ginger and indomethacin (a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug), especially when the treatment started from the day of arthritis induction.

Interestingly, The percentage of disease recovery was 4.6-8.3% and 10.2% more in turmeric compared with ginger and indomethacin, respectively.

Dr. the lead author said, after taking into account of co and confounders, "the anti-inflammatory/anti-oxidant activity of turmeric over ginger and indomethacin, which may have beneficial effects against rheumatoid arthritis onset/progression as shown in AIA rat model".

The findings indicated a potential effect of ginger against arthritis although to the lesser extent than those of turmeric.

Furthermore, the investigation of the potential of hydroalcoholic extract of Zingiber officinale rhizomes (Z. officinale extract) in ameliorating inflammatory process in rat collagen-induced arthritis, also found that
* Z. officinale extract in doses higher than 50 mg/kg/day intraperitoneally significantly enhanced the immune function against the progression of arthritis.

* Continued administration of the said volume for 26 days can ameliorate the clinical scores, disease incidence, joint temperature and swelling, and cartilage destruction.

* The anti-arthritis effects were associated with reduced production of proinflammatory cytokines and antibody.

Most importantly, Z. officinale extract at the dose of 200 mg/kg/day was more superior than those of 2 mg/kg/day of indomethacin compared by most of the measured parameters.

Taken altogether, ginger may be used as a functional food for the prevention and combined with primary medicine for the treatment of arthritis

Honey, the Natural Whole Food for Prevention and Treatment of Dandruff

By Kyle J. Norton

Honey may have a potential effect in the prevention and treatment of dandruff, a common skin problem of many adults, some scientists suggested

Dandruff is a condition of the scalp most commonly caused by the dry skin resulting from dry air.

However, in many instances, the condition also is associated with seborrheic dermatitis. leading to rough, scaly skin on the scalp.

In other words, patients with oily skin accompanied by seborrheic dermatitis can lead to overexpression of yeast that causes the development of the large white flakes or yellow scales due to uneven shedding and clumping of dead skin cells.

Belief or not dandruff affects over 50% of the general population.

There are many causes of dandruff. Researchers suggested that dry skin, use of wrong kinds of hair products and skin conditions such as seborrheic dermatitis or eczema are associated with the onset of dandruff.

In some people, an overgrowth of a yeast-like fungus can also cause dandruff.

The increase of age hormone imbalance and prolonged periods of stress are the most common prevalent risk factors associated with the condition.

Most case of dandruff can be treated with daily shampoo to reduce the oil on the scalp. In severe cases, due to overexpression of fungi, pyrithione zinc shampoos may be recommended.

Honey is the miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The rich golden liquid It is considered one of healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.

Dandruff, if left untreated can cause itchy and inflamed scalp that it lead to temporary hair loss.

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of dandruff with no side effects, researchers examine the anti-dandruff effects from honey, a bee-derived, supersaturated solution composed mainly of fructose and glucose, and contains proteins and amino acids, vitamins, enzymes, minerals, and other minor components.

Application of honey exerted a significant effect in reducing dandruff, through its moisturizing and antimicrobial property.

The effective doses range between 1 and 10%, but concentrations up to 70% can be reached by mixing with oils, gel, and emulsifiers, or polymer entrapment.

With an aim to reaffirming the honey anti-dandruff activity, a researcher at the Dubai Specialised Medical Centre and Medical Research Labs, investigated the potential use of topical application of crude honey in the management of seborrheic dermatitis and dandruff.

The study included 30 patients (20 patients were males and 10 were females, their ages ranged between 15 and 60 years) with chronic seborrheic dermatitis of scalp, face, and front of the chest.

Before applying honey to treat the condition, participants showed conditions of scaling, itching and hair loss. The lesions were scaling macules, papules and dry white plaques with crust and fissures.

All patients were asked to apply diluted crude honey (90% honey diluted in warm water) every other day on the lesions with gentle rubbing for 2-3 mins. And, honey was left for 3 hr before gentle rinsing with warm water.

After 4 weeks of treatment, honey showed a significant effect on prophylactic phase, which lasted for six months.

Furthermore, in half of the patients treated with the topical honey once weekly and the other half served as control.

Treatment group demonstrated a reduction of Itching and disappeared scaling within one week. Skin lesions were healed and disappeared completely within 2 weeks.

Moreover, honey administration also improved in hair loss.

None of the patients treated with honey application once weekly experienced a relapse for six months

Dr. Al-Waili NS, after taking into account co and confounders, said, "crude honey could markedly improve seborrheic dermatitis and associated hair loss and prevent relapse when applied weekly".

The findings clearly suggested that honey may be considered a replacement of chemical ingredients for the prevention and treatment of dandruff associated with seborrheic dermatitis, with no side effects.

Herbal Burdock, the Best Anti Diabetes and Diabetic Complications Functional Remedy, Scientists Find

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a herbal medicine for the prevention and treatment of diabetes with no side effects, according to studies.

Diabetes is a medical and chronic condition caused by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate the glucose.

The disease is either caused by cells in pancreas died off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol.

Some researchers suggested that high blood cholesterol is one major risk factor not only contributed to the risk of obesity but also facilitates the onset of diabetes.

How to calculate your blood cholesterol, If the ratio your blood cholesterol is higher than 4, you have high blood cholesterol.

The normal ratio of blood cholesterol is 4 (low-density lipoprotein or bad cholesterol)/ 1 ( high-density lipoprotein or good cholesterol). Any number which is higher than 4 is considered high blood cholesterol.

How high blood cholesterol associated with diabetes
* Most patients with diabetes also have a syndrome oh high blood cholesterol.

* According to Dr. Michael Greger M.D long-term intake of a high-fat diet is associated with diabetes. According to the study of young, healthy people and split them up into two groups, high fat intake within 2 days demonstrated, a significant rise of glucose intolerance. During the course of study, the high-fat diet group ended up with twice the blood sugar compared to the carbohydrate-rich diet group.

* Also the spike of blood sugar in the high-fat diet group may also increase the onset of insulin resistance due to insulin no longer performs its function in activating the function of the insulin receptors site which now clogged up by cholesterol to stimulating the enzymes associated with glucose transport.

In other words, the pancreas beta cells will continue to produce insulin but can not lower the blood glucose due to the disruption of glucose metabolism, leading to insulin resistance, the major cause of diabetes.

Burdock is a plant in the group of biennial thistles, genus Arctium, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to the Euro. The herbal medicine has been using thousands of year in China and other traditional herbal medicine as a diuretic, diaphoretic, and a blood purifying agent and to treat wounds and infections stomach ulcers and other digestive problems.

It contains carbonated water, sugar,, manloid colorings, phosphoric acid, citric acid and a good amount of dietary fiber, calcium, potassium, and amino acids and chemicals compounds of guaianolide, arctinone, arctinal, methyl arctate,11-tridecadien-3,5,7,9-tetraynde-hydrocostus lactone, dehydrodihydrocostus lactone, 3-octenoic acid, 3-hexenoic acid etc.

With an aim to find a natural medicine for the treatment of diabetes and reduced the diabetic retinopathy is one of the most common and severe complications of diabetes mellitus, researchers at the Third Military Medical University examined Arctiin, a bioactive compound isolated from the dry seeds of Arctium lappa L.(Burdock), antidiabetic activity.

Male Sprague-Dawley rats induced diabetes are randomly divided into five groups (n = 20 per group) and treated with intragastric doses of 30, 90, or 270 mg/kg/d wt of arctiin, 100 mg/kg/d wt of calcium dobesilate, or 0.5 % CMC-Na and 20 nondiabetic sham-treated rats were treated with 0.5 % CMC-Na.

In the beginning, there was no significantly different occurrence of diabetic retinopathy among the groups.

However, at the week 16, the glycosylated hemoglobin (HBA1c) level was significantly decreased in all of the arctiin-treated groups when compared with the control group, and the serum glucose level was also decreased in the rats treated with the highest dose of arctiin

The normal levels of HbA1c of 6.5% and HbA1c are used as an objective measure of glycaemic control.

The highest dose of the arctiin group showed a decrease in the serum glucose level which was elevated by the induction of diabetes.

Arctiin treatment group displayed a reduced inflammatory in the expression of retinal edema, detachment of the retina, and levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines observed by the histological and immunochemical examinations.

Furthermore, arctiin also increased the viability of retinal microvascular endothelial cells which reduced in diabetic rats, in vitro.

Dr. Lu LC, the lead scientist wrote, "these findings demonstrate that arctiin decreases the severity of diabetic complications, demonstrating the importance of this compound as an inhibitor of diabetic retinopathy".

Additionally, in the review of anti-diabetes effects of the active compounds present in the different botanical parts of burdock, researchers examined the active ingredients in the roots and seed.

The results of chemical analysis suggested that the compounds isolated from root showed a strong effect in the inhibition of diabetes through its antioxidant activity.

In the seeds, some active compounds possess anti-inflammatory effects similar to that of arctiin treatment rats group.

These results suggested that herbal burdock exerted a strong anti-diabetes and diabetic complication through its glycaemic control and antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Taken altogether, herbal Burdock processed high numbers of the bioactive compound may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of diabetes and diabetic complication.

Herbal Aloe Vera, the Potent Anti Colon Cancer Herbal Remedy

By Kyle J. Norton

Herbal Aloe vera may have a profound and positive effect on reducing risk and treatment of colon cancer, with no side effects, some scientists suggested.

Colon Cancer is a condition characterized by the abnormal proliferation of cells in the colon.
Most cases of colon cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the colon. In the early, as the cancer cells are only found in the outmost layer of the localized linning, patients may not experience any symptoms.

However, in the advanced stage, the colon cancer cells can travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissue or organs, leading to secondary metastasis.

The most common sites of metastasis for colon or rectal cancer is the liver and lung.

According to the statistic provided by the American Cancer Society, colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed in the United States. Every year approximately, 90000 new cases of colon cancer. 43,000 new cases of rectal cancer are diagnosed, leading to the death of 50,000 patients.

The lifetime risk of developing colorectal cancer is about 1 in 22 (4.49%) for men and 1 in 24 (4.15%) for women.

The 5-year survival rate for patients diagnosed with localized stage colorectal cancer is 90%. About 39% of patients are diagnosed at this early stage.

Although there are many risk factors associated with the onset of colon cancer such as age, family and personal history, genetic preposition, smoking, alcohol, being overweight or obese are, many researchers suggested that the most common cause of colon cancer in the Western world is due to the promotion of the Western diet.

Dr. Jessie A. Satia, the lead scientist in the examine the dietary patterns and colon cancer risk in Whites and African Americans in North Carolina strongly indicated "Compared to the Western-Southern pattern, the fruit-vegetable and metropolitan patterns were associated with more healthful dietary behaviors (e.g., higher vegetable intake and lower red meat consumption), and demographic/lifestyle characteristics typically correlated with low colon cancer risk, for example, lower BMI, higher education, and higher NSAID use".

And, "The fruit-vegetable pattern was significantly inversely associated with colon cancer risk in Whites (OR = 0.4, 95% CI = 0.3–0.6) and the metropolitan pattern with a nonsignificant 30% risk reduction in both Whites and African Americans after adjustment for education".

These results strongly suggested that people who follow the diet pattern of the Western diet are at a substantial risk of the disease. In other words, the risk of colon cancer is significantly reduced for people who follow the diet with high fruits and vegetable and low red meat and processed foods.

Aloe Vera is species of succulent plant in the genus Aloe, belonging to the Family Xanthorrhoeaceae, native to Sudan. It has become very popular for commercial cultivation due to its health benefits.

The medical plant has been used in herbal medicine in treating many kinds of disease, including wound, burn healing, minor skin infections, sebaceous cysts, diabetes, and elevated of cholesterol, etc. It is also one of many popular herbs studied in scientific ways with some conflicting results.

The main areas of chemical constituents of Aloe vera include Aloe-Emodin, amino acids, anthraquinones, enzymes, minerals, vitamins, lignins, monosaccharide, polysaccharides, salicylic acid, saponins, and sterols.

With an aim to find a natural ingredient or remedy for the treatment of colon cancer, researchers at the Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology examine the anti-colon cancer effects on Aloe-emodin (AE), a natural anthraquinone.

In colon cancer cell lines, AE inhibited cell proliferation by the cell cycle arrest at the G2/M phase and protein associated with cellular proliferation and division.

AE also induced cancer cell death through stimulating the function of proteins associated with pro apoptosis.

In order to obtain additional information related to the Aloe vera anti-colon cancer activity, researchers analyzed the molecular mechanisms involved in the antimigratory and antiangiogenic activity of this hydroxy anthraquinone.

AE suppressed the phorbol-12-myristyl-13-acetate (PMA), a diester of phorbol in the promotion of promotes tumor expression through migration and invasion.

AE also inhibited the mRNA expression of colon cancer cells and the matrixes involved malignant tumor growth, invasion, and metastasis and gene associated with the signaling in the formation and dissemination of a range of cancers.

Furthermore, EA inhibited the Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) expression in forming a new blood vessel in the promotion of endothelial cell migration/invasion.

Moreover, AE also suppressed the protein complex that controls the transcription of DNA, cytokine production and cell survival.

Researchers wrote in the summary of the experiment, "These data indicate that AE target multiple molecules responsible for cellular invasion, migration and angiogenesis" and Inhibitory effect on angiogenic and metastatic regulatory processes make AE a sensible candidate as a specific blocker of tumor-associated events".

Taken altogether, herbal Aloe vera processed a major bioactive compound Aloe emodin may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and combined with conventional medicine for the treatment of colon cancer.
