Strawberries Reduce Risk and Treatment of Type 2 Diabetes

 The rise of obesity-associated with the increase in the incidence of Type 2 diabetes has been a significant burden on health care systems in many countries.

Strawberry processed abundant phytochemicals may be the next target for pharmaceutical companies to extract a single ingredient for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, some scientists suggested.

Type 2 diabetes is the medical condition characterized by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate the glucose as the results either cells in pancreas dying off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol.

Researcher do not why people in similar health conditions, diet and family history some are susceptible to the development of insulin resistance, the early stage of diabetes while others do.

Some researchers suggested that genetic proposition and unhealthy lifestyle accompanied physical activity are most common risk factors associated with the onset of type 2 diabetes.

Dr. Karla C. Paz-Salinas, the lead author in the study "Do People with Type 2 Diabetes Think They are Unhealthy?" wrote, "A healthy lifestyle and understanding of diabetes management are important factors for delaying the onset of comorbidities associated with Type 2 diabetes".

In genetic preposition front, researchers at the Medical College of Wisconsin, said, "Very few T2D risk genes were identified using candidate gene and linkage-based studies, but the advent of genome-wide association studies has led to the identification of multiple genes, including several that were not previously known to play any role in T2D. Highly genes, for example, TCF7L2, KCNQ1, and KCNJ11, are discussed in greater detail".

We can not prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes caused by genetic mutation, however, the risk of type 2 diabetes can be reduced substantially and type 2 diabetes can be easily managed if we are following the healthy lifestyle that processes the diet high in fruits and vegetable, less in saturated and trans fat, red meat and processed food with moderate exercise.

Strawberry is a genius of Fragaria × ananassa belongs to the family Roseaceae. They have been grown all over the world with a suitable climate for commercial profits and for health benefits.

The major chemical compounds of strawberry include anthocyanin and ellagitannins and p-Hydroxybenzoic acid, p-coumaric acid, ellagic acid, cyanidin-3-glucoside, pelargonidin-3-glucoside, kaempferol, quercetin, and myricetin.

In the finding of a natural ingredient for the treatment of diabetes with no side effects, researchers at the University of California launched a study to examine the anti-inflammatory and blood glucose (BG)-regulating capacity of strawberries in a mouse model of diet-induced obesity.

In a total of thirty-six male C57BL/6J mice were included in the study randomly divided into four groups (nine mice per group), including mice fed a low-fat diet (LF, 13 % fat), the LF supplemented with 2·6 % freeze-dried strawberry powder (LFSB), a high-fat diet (HF, 44 % fat) or the HF supplemented with 2·6 % strawberry powder (HFSB).

The dietary intake of SB approximated one human serving of strawberries

Before administration of strawberry powder, a blood sample of HF group showed an increased non-fasted BG, insulin, soluble intracellular adhesion molecule-1, the important biomarkers for inflammatory processes involving activation or damage to cells, E-selectin, leptin, resistin, and plasminogen activator protein-1, the indication of inflammatory process.


High dietary fat decreased IL-4 production, an anti-inflammatory cytokine from activated splenocytes, the white blood cells.

The levels of BG concentrations were lower in the mice supplemented with SB (10·64 mmol/l) compared to the non-supplemented mice.

BG values were approximately 6·5 % lower in the supplemented mice.

These results firmly supported a promising role for dietary strawberries in reducing the risks associated with obesity and diabetes and regulating the levels of inflammatory markers in non-obese individuals.

Herbal Arctostaphylos uva-ursi, The Potential and Natural Antibiotics Alternative

Arctostaphylos uva-ursi may be the next target to identify the single ingredient as the natural antibiotic for the treatment of bacterial infection with no side effects, some scientists suggested.

Infection is a result of pathogens entering in the human body starts to multiply. In the acute phase of infection, the white blood calls in the immune first line of defense stimulate the production of inflammatory cytokines to the site with an aim to kill off the invaded bacteria.

During the battle normally won by the immune system, the overexpression of inflammatory cytokine can cause symptoms of skin redness, swelling and fever as well as damaging to the nearby cells, leading healthy cell death and improper healing with the formation of irreversible scars.

Arctostaphylos uva-ursi is one of the species of Bearberry, in the genus Arctostaphylos, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to northern North America, Asia, and Europe.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as a diuretic agent and to treat urinary problems, including bladder infections, kidney infection, kidney stone, pelvic pain, etc.

Herbal Arctostaphylos uva-ursi contains arbutin, ursolic acid, tannic acid, gallic acid, some essential oil and resin, hydroquinones tannins, phenolic glycosides, and flavonoids.

Futhermore, in the testing, the antibacterial activity of the new discovery of two novels acylated caprylic alcohol glycosides (1, 2) isolated by Arctostaphylos pumila using the High-throughput isolation, purification, and analysis methods.

Both new compounds showed to exert a significant inhibitory effect against resistance and nonresistance bacteria.

More precisely, compounds 1 and 2 exhibited antibacterial activity against Gram-positive methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus with a MIC of 128 microg/mL and 64 microg/mL, respectively.

The finding suggested that the extracts and a bioactive compound of Arctostaphylos uva ursi process a strong antibacterial activity similar to those of conventional antibiotics with no side effects.

However, intake of the extracts or supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdoses acute toxicity.

All phytoestrogens exerted significant anti-proliferative activity, but with time course patterns that often differed from that of estradiol and each other. 

More importantly, except for trans-resveratrol, a serum removal-induced extrinsic apoptotic pathway was blocked by these phytoestrogens.

These results clearly suggested, injection of single ingredients of phytochemicals may both tumorigenic and anti-tumorigenic effects and intake of the estrogenic whole food which processed all the ingredient exerted a strong anti-tumorigenic activity.

Taken all together, there is no doubt that herbal Alfalfa processed a strong estrogenic effect may be considered a functional food for the treatment of diseases and symptoms associated with estrogen deficiency.

Butcher's broom may be considered a functional herb for the cure of hemorrhoids without inducing side effects, some scientists found.

Hemorrhoids are a condition of swollen veins in the anal canal that cause pain.

In some cases, inner hemorrhoids can cause a large volume of blood loss to a patient, leading to a  life-threatening condition.

According to the statistic, approximately, 75% of all Americans will develop hemorrhoids at some points in their lives.

In the study to examine whether constipation, a low fiber diet, sedentary lifestyle and gravidity are commonly assumed to increase the risk of hemorrhoids, researchers launched a joint study led by the University of North Carolina School of Medicine.

The cross-sectional study includes participants who underwent a colonoscopy in a colorectal adenoma prevention trial and who had a detailed assessment of bowel habits, diet, and activity. The presence of hemorrhoids was extracted from the subjects’ colonoscopy reports.

The study included 2,813 participants. Of these, 1,074 had hemorrhoids recorded. 

At the end of the study, researchers wrote, "Constipation is associated with an increased risk of hemorrhoids. Gravidity and physical activity do not appear to be associated. High grain fiber intake and sedentary behavior are associated with a decreased risk of hemorrhoids".

These result firmly indicated that the most common risk factor of hemorrhoids is constipation found in the high percentage of people who follow the Western diet.

In other words, by maintaining the healthy levels of daily fiber intake, the risk of hemorrhoids can be reduced substantially.

Butcher's broom is a low evergreen shrub, a species of Ruscus aculeatus, belonging to the family Asparagaceae, native to Eurasia.

The plant has been used in herbal medicine to treat reduce inflammation, Peripheral vascular disease, Hemorrhoids Bronchial asthma, Varicose veins, Hypotension, Jaundice, functional disorders of the heart, kidney disorder, venotonic and anti-oedematous properties, etc..

Beet (Beta Vulgaris), the Potent Free Radicals Scavenger Functional Food

Beet or beetroot may be considered a functional food in protecting the body against the onset of diseases caused by oxidative stress, some scientists suggested.

Oxidative stress in the result of the imbalance of the ratio of free radicals and antioxidants in the body.

In other words, it is caused either by overexpression of free radicals or depletion of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host body.

Free radical is an unstable molecule with the unpaired electrons in the outer ring formed when oxygen interacts with certain molecules. The highly reactive radicals once formed can start a chain reaction, like dominoes that may not stop until they are inhibited by antioxidant.

According to the free radical theory, organisms age and sick are associated with the accumulation of free radicals that cause damage to the cells over time.

An antioxidant is a stable molecule that inhibits oxidation.

Long-term expression of oxidative stress in the body can induce aging and chronic diseases.

Dr. the lead author in the concerns of overexpression of free radical in the risk aging and illness launched an investigation to examine the negative effect of ROS in the risk of the depletion of antioxidant defenses. 
The differentiation found that oxidative stress is involved in several age-related conditions (ie, cardiovascular diseases [CVDs], chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, chronic kidney disease, neurodegenerative diseases, and cancer). 

There is a significant association between oxLDL and higher arterial stiffness, independent of other traditional CVD risk factors and link atherosclerosis with oxidized LDL-cholesterol (oxLDL) as the compound mainly responsible for its production in elderly.

In diabetes mellitus (type 1 and 2), there is the association of increased formation of free radicals and decreased antioxidant potential, leading to macro- and microvascular complications.

And, oxidative stress plays a pivotal role in the progression of CKD, through glomerular damage and renal ischemia and, indirectly, with inflammation, hypertension, and endothelial dysfunction.

All these results found in the differentiation suggested that by identifying different types of oxidative stress biomarkers in the facilitation of chronic illness may provide important information about the efficacy of the type of treatment, the guiding selection of the most effective drugs/dose regimens for patients. 


Beet is best known as the beetroot or garden beet and belong to the amaranth family. It is a perennial plant with leafy stems growing to 1–2 m tall.

The widespread of oxidative stress-related chronic diseases has been a burden to health care systems such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer and concerns of the many scientists.

Particularly, the medication used for the treatment of these diseases have been found to induce numbers of serious side effects.

Researchers at the Poznań University of Medical Sciences in the finding the natural ingredient which processes a potential for the treatment without inducing any adverse effects launched an evaluation to analyze the effect of beetroot juice against N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDEA)-induced liver injury.

In two hepatic cell lines: non-tumour THLE-2 and hepatoma-derived HepG2 cell lines, treatment of with 2, 10 and 20 μm of BET resulted in the translocation of Nrf2 from the cytosol to the nucleus., thus inhibiting the Nrf2 function  that regulates the expression of antioxidant proteins that protect against oxidative damage triggered by injury and inflammation.

Papaya, The Fruit Which Normalizes Your Blood Pressure with No Side Effects

Papaya may be considered a natural whole food for the prevention and treatment of hypertension, some scientists suggested.

Hypertension is another term of abnormally high blood pressure in the arteries.

Male albino Wistar rats randomly were divided into three batches (15 rats per batch)-renal, DOCA-salt hypertensives, and normotensives.in the study to examine the antihypertensive effect of crude ethanol extract from the unripened fruit of Carica papaya.

Each batch was further divided into three groups-the untreated, hydrallazine and extract treated groups.

Before injection of crude ethanol extract, the basal (control) The mean arterial blood pressure (MAP) was 93.8 +/- 4.5, 175.2 +/- 5. 1 and 181.3 +/- 6.2 mmHg in the normotensive, renal and DOCA-salt hypertensives, respectively.

Groups treated with extract produced about 28% more depression of MAP than hydrallazine in the hypertensive groups treated with hydrallazine (200 microg/100 g i. v) and extract (20 mg/kg.i.v).

In vitro, using isolated rabbit arterial (aorta, renal and vertebral) strips showed that the papaya extract (10 microg/mL) produced relaxation of vascular muscle tone.

According to the findings, the fruit juice of C. papaya probably processes antihypertensive agent(s) which exhibits mainly alpha-adrenoceptor activity.

Taken all together, unripe fruit of papaya may have a significant effect in reducing the risk of hypertension and treatment of hypertension with no side effect.

Apricot, the Potential Anti Colon Cancer Functional Fruit, Scientists Find

Apricot maybe next generation of whole food medicine for the prevention and treatment of colon cancer, some studies suggested.

Colon cancer is the medical condition characterized by cell growth disorderly and irregularly in the tissue of the colon as a result of the alternation of DNA of the healthy cells.

Most case of colon cancer starts on the surfaced cells of the inner lining of the colon tissue. However, at the later stage, the cancerous cells of the colon can travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissue and organs.

The colon also known as the large bowel or large intestine is an organ which involves the absorption of water from the small bowel contents and breaks down of certain materials in the feces into substances in which some of them to be reabsorbed and reused by the body.

The causes of colon cancer are unknown, However, researchers do know that age, family history, ethnicity, overweight or obesity, excessive alcohol drinking and long-term use of tobacco are a most common risk factor of the colon cancer.

Some researchers suggested that good and poor choice of the diet may have potential effects to reduce and contribute to the risk of colon cancer.

People who follow the Western diet not only associated to higher risk but also the recurrent risk of colon cancer onset.

Dr. Alan Moss, the lead author in the study of "The Association Between Diet and Colorectal Cancer Risk: Moving Beyond Generalizations" wrote, "processed meat is carcinogenic to humans and lists processed meat as a group 1 substance. Processed meats result from salting, smoking, fermenting, or curing the meat, and common examples include ham, bacon, and sausage.5 Furthermore, red meat was declared as probably carcinogenic to humans, and red meat was listed as a group 2A substance.4 Red and processed meats are considered significant components of a “Western” diet. Other consumed substances that are associated with an increased risk of CRC include alcohol6 and tobacco".

On the other hand in the support of the healthy diet choice in the reduction of colon cancer risk, Dr.Jessie A. Satia, the lead scientists said, "the fruit-vegetable and metropolitan patterns were associated with more healthful dietary behaviors (e.g., higher vegetable intake and lower red meat consumption), and demographic/lifestyle characteristics typically correlated with low colon cancer risk".

The apricot tree is about 8–12 m tall and a trunk up to 40 cm diameter belongs to the family Rosaceae.

Apricot is classified with the family o the plum and has yellow to orange, often tinged red on the side which is exposed to the sun.

The chemical constituents of apricot include
Oleic acid, linoleic acid, palmitic.acid, glycolipids, phospholipids, benzoic acid (I), isorhamnetin (II), quercetin (III), kaempferol-3-O-beta-D-galactopyranoside (IV), isorhamnetin-3-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside (V), isoquercitrin (VI), hypericin (VII) and rutin (VIII)(a) and flavonoid glycosides.

Dr. Fahima Rashid, the lead author in the finding a natural and bioactive from food sources with no side effect suggested that the butanolic extract may have a profound effect in reducing the risk of colon cancer by inhibiting the expression of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.

The antibacterial effect of the extract was attributed to the presence of bioactive Flavonoid glycoside.

Futhermore, in the investigation of the anti-neoplastic effects of MK615, an extract from the Japanese apricot (Prunus mume), against 3 colon cancer cell lines, SW480, COLO, and WiDr, cultured with MK615, researchers found that
* MK615 inhibited growth and lysed SW480, COLO and WiDr cells in a dose-dependent manner.

* MK615 induced apoptosis after 6 h incubation, at which point the occurrence of apoptotic cells was 68.0%, 65.7% and 64.7% for SW480, COLO, and WiDr cells, respectively.

* MK615 induced cells death through massive cytoplasmic vacuoles (autophagosomes) in all three cell lines.

Dr. Mori S, the lead author wrote at the final report, "MK615 has an anti-neoplastic effect against colon cancer cells. The effect may be exerted by the induction of apoptosis and autophagy".

Taken altogether, apricot may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of colon cancer.

However, further data collection large example size and multi-centers studies performed with human consumption of the whole food or its bioactive compounds during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of apricot anti-colon cancer possibilities.
