Herbal Alfalfa, the Potent Remedy for the treatment of Symptoms and Diseases Associated with Estrogen Deficiency

By Kyle J. Norton

Herbal Alfalfa may process an estrogenic effect for the treatment of estrogen deficient diseases and symptoms, some studies found.

The estrogenic effect is an action which stimulates the production of the hormone estrogen in case of deficiency.

Menopause symptoms is a set of symptoms caused by the gradual decline of levels of estrogen and progesterone due to aging loss menstrual period in women.

The reproductive tract, the urinary tract, the heart and blood vessels, bones, breasts, skin, hair, mucous membranes, pelvic muscles normally regulated by hormone estrogen also are affected by the decline levels of the hormone.

In the concern of hormone therapy used for the treatment of menopause symptoms, herbal medicine with estrogenic effect have been under intensive investigation, with an aim to find a natural ingredient with the similar effects as of those used in hormone therapy with no side effects.

Dr. the lead scientist at the Pan-American Health Organization/World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Traditional Medicine launched an evaluation to examine the estrogenic activity of seventeen plant species collected and extracted in Costa Rica.

Interestingly, only 6 of the plant extracts bound to the ERs with 4 of the six extracts stimulated reporter gene expression, according to the ER-beta-Chemically Activated Luciferase Expression assay.

Four extracts exerted estrogenic activity also act as estrogen agonists.

In other words, these extracts induced production of estrogen when the body needs and inhibited levels of estrogen when the hormone is overexpressed in the body.

Alfalfa is a flowering plant in the genus Medicago, belonging to the family Fabaceae.

The herbal plant has been cultivated all over the world as hay for cattle feeding.

The leaves, sprouts, and seeds to make medicine has been used in traditional medicine over thousands of year to treat high cholesterol, asthma, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, enhance digestive system, bleeding disorder, kidney, and urinary tract infection, etc.

North America aboriginal has used Alfalfa seed as food, such as making bread and mush.

The chemical constituents of alfalfa include flavones, isoflavones, sterols, Bichanin A, Coumestrol Diadzein, Formonetin, Genistein, and coumarin derivatives, etc.

A study to determine whether estrogenic botanical supplement (EBS) use influences breast cancer survivors' health-related outcomes.was conducted by the research team at the Beckman Research Institute.

The study includes 767 breast cancer survivors who filled out the returned questionnaire suggested that EBS improve quality of life by reducing some of the symptom associated with 15 hormone-related symptoms such as hot flashes and night sweats.

However, Dr. Ma H, the lead author after taking into account of co and confounders said, "Our findings indicate that several specific types of EBS might have important influences on a woman's various aspects of quality of life".

Additionally, in the study to clarify the effect of phytoestrogens is a group of lipophilic plant compounds, researchers launched an investigation to examine examined the proliferative effects of phytoestrogens on a rat pituitary tumor cell line, GH3/B6/F10, originally subcloned from GH3 cells based on its ability to express high levels of the membrane estrogen receptor-alpha.

The phytoestrogen compounds included in the study at the range of different concentrations are coumestrol, daidzein, genistein, and trans-resveratrol.

All four phytoestrogens attenuated the proliferative effects of estradiol when administered simultaneously.

Except for trans-resveratrol, all phytoestrogens increased GH3/B6/F10 cell proliferation at some concentration relevant to dietary levels.

All phytoestrogens exerted significant anti-proliferative activity, but with time course patterns that often differed from that of estradiol and each other.

More importantly, except for trans-resveratrol, a serum removal-induced extrinsic apoptotic pathway was blocked by these phytoestrogens.

These results clearly suggested, injection of single ingredients of phytochemicals may both tumorigenic and anti-tumorigenic effects and intake of the estrogenic whole food which processed all the ingredient exerted a strong anti-tumorigenic activity.

Taken all together, there is no doubt that herbal Alfalfa processed a strong estrogenic effect may be considered a functional food for the treatment of diseases and symptoms associated with estrogen deficiency.

Herbal Butcher's broom, The Low Cost But Effective Treatment for Hemorrhoids

By Kyle J. Norton

Butcher's broom may be considered a functional herb for the cure of hemorrhoids without inducing side effects, some scientists found.

Hemorrhoids are a condition of swollen veins in the anal canal that cause pain.

In some cases, inner hemorrhoids can cause a large volume of blood loss to a patient, leading to a  life-threatening condition.

According to the statistic, approximately, 75% of all Americans will develop hemorrhoids at some points in their lives.

In the study to examine whether constipation, a low fiber diet, sedentary lifestyle and gravidity are commonly assumed to increase the risk of hemorrhoids, researchers launched a joint study led by the University of North Carolina School of Medicine.

The cross-sectional study includes participants who underwent a colonoscopy in a colorectal adenoma prevention trial and who had a detailed assessment of bowel habits, diet, and activity. The presence of hemorrhoids was extracted from the subjects’ colonoscopy reports.

The study included 2,813 participants. Of these, 1,074 had hemorrhoids recorded.

At the end of the study, researchers wrote, "Constipation is associated with an increased risk of hemorrhoids. Gravidity and physical activity do not appear to be associated. High grain fiber intake and sedentary behavior are associated with a decreased risk of hemorrhoids".

These result firmly indicated that the most common risk factor of hemorrhoids is constipation found in the high percentage of people who follow the Western diet.

In other words, by maintaining the healthy levels of daily fiber intake, the risk of hemorrhoids can be reduced substantially.

Butcher's broom is a low evergreen shrub, a species of Ruscus aculeatus, belonging to the family Asparagaceae, native to Eurasia.

The plant has been used in herbal medicine to treat reduce inflammation, Peripheral vascular disease, Hemorrhoids Bronchial asthma, Varicose veins, Hypotension, Jaundice, functional disorders of the heart, kidney disorder, venotonic and anti-oedematous properties, etc..

The chemical ingredients of Herbal Butcher's broom includes rutin, sitosterol, sparteine, spirostanol saponins, steroidal sapogenins, sterols, stigmasterol, sulfated steroidal saponins, sweet broom, tetracosanoic acid, triterpenes, triterpenes, tyramine, etc.

In the finding the natural ingredient or whole food that process anti-hemorrhoid effect without inducing the painful side effect in those of conventional surgery, researchers at Thorne Research launched an investigation of all possible treatments.

Botanical plant with reduced cost used in the traditional treatment of hemorrhoids and varicose veins may be another alternative.

Oral dietary supplementation from these plants inhibited the loss of vascular integrity associated with the pathogenesis of both hemorrhoids and varicose veins by improving microcirculation, capillary flow, and vascular tone, and to strengthen the connective tissue of the perivascular amorphous substrates.

Out of several herbal plants selected for the study, oral supplementation with herbal Butcher's broom used alone or combined with others herbs such as Aesculus hippocastanum, Centella asiatica, Hamamelis virginiana, and bioflavonoids showed to prevent time-consuming, painful, and expensive complications of varicose veins and hemorrhoids.

These results suggested, compared to conservative therapies including diet, lifestyle changes, and hydrotherapy which require a high degree of patient compliance to be effective, more patients who concern with the cost and side effects of surgery may opt for the use ofButcher'ss Broom oral supplement in the treatment of hemorrhoids with no side effects.

Beet (Beta Vulgaris), the Potent Free Radicals Scavenger Functional Food

By Kyle J. Norton

Beet or beetroot may be considered a functional food in protecting the body against the onset of diseases caused by oxidative stress, some scientists suggested.

Oxidative stress in the result of the imbalance of the ratio of free radicals and antioxidants in the body.

In other words, it is caused either by overexpression of free radicals or depletion of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host body.

Free radical is an unstable molecule with the unpaired electrons in the outer ring formed when oxygen interacts with certain molecules. The highly reactive radicals once formed can start a chain reaction, like dominoes that may not stop until they are inhibited by antioxidant.

According to the free radical theory, organisms age and sick are associated with the accumulation of free radicals that cause damage to the cells over time.

An antioxidant is a stable molecule that inhibits oxidation.

Long-term expression of oxidative stress in the body can induce aging and chronic diseases.

Dr. the lead author in the concerns of overexpression of free radical in the risk aging and illness launched an investigation to examine the negative effect of ROS in the risk of the depletion of antioxidant defenses.
The differentiation found that oxidative stress is involved in several age-related conditions (ie, cardiovascular diseases [CVDs], chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, chronic kidney disease, neurodegenerative diseases, and cancer).

There is a significant association between oxLDL and higher arterial stiffness, independent of other traditional CVD risk factors and link atherosclerosis with oxidized LDL-cholesterol (oxLDL) as the compound mainly responsible for its production in elderly.

In diabetes mellitus (type 1 and 2), there is the association of increased formation of free radicals and decreased antioxidant potential, leading to macro- and microvascular complications.

And, oxidative stress plays a pivotal role in the progression of CKD, through glomerular damage and renal ischemia and, indirectly, with inflammation, hypertension, and endothelial dysfunction.

All these results found in the differentiation suggested that by identifying different types of oxidative stress biomarkers in the facilitation of chronic illness may provide important information about the efficacy of the type of treatment, the guiding selection of the most effective drugs/dose regimens for patients.

Beet is best known as the beetroot or garden beet and belong to the amaranth family. It is a perennial plant with leafy stems growing to 1–2 m tall.

The widespread of oxidative stress-related chronic diseases has been a burden to health care systems such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer and concerns of the many scientists.

Particularly, the medication used for the treatment of these diseases have been found to induce numbers of serious side effects.

Researchers at the Poznań University of Medical Sciences in the finding the natural ingredient which processes a potential for the treatment without inducing any adverse effects launched an evaluation to analyze the effect of beetroot juice against N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDEA)-induced liver injury.

In two hepatic cell lines: non-tumour THLE-2 and hepatoma-derived HepG2 cell lines, treatment of with 2, 10 and 20 μm of BET resulted in the translocation of Nrf2 from the cytosol to the nucleus., thus inhibiting the Nrf2 function  that regulates the expression of antioxidant proteins that protect against oxidative damage triggered by injury and inflammation.

These initiation caused by beet juice was application of accompanied by the phosphorylation of serine/threonine kinase (AKT) in the mediation of carcinogenesis, JNK (c-Jun N-terminal kinase) in the regulation of that regulates the biological processes implicated in tumorigenesis, and extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) in the mediation of cancer cell stages of division.

Additionally, beet juice also increased the expression of antioxidant in the gastric cell lines through significantly increased the mRNA and protein levels of GSTP, GSTT, GSTM and NQO1, the groups of protein which play an important role in cellular protection against oxidative stress and toxic foreign chemicals, in these cells.

Interestingly, BET did not modulate any of the other parameters measured in the HepG2 cells and did not change the methylation of GSTP1 in these cells either.

The finding led us to believe that BET through the activation of Nrf2 and subsequent induction of the expression of genes controlled by this factor may exert its hepatoprotective and anticarcinogenic effects.

In other words, BET increased the levels of antioxidants by reducing the oxidative stress triggered by injury and inflammation through protection of cell DNA against cancer initiation and liver against the expression of chemical toxins.

Taken altogether beet juice may be considered a functional liquid for the inhibition of oxidative stress and adjunct therapy for treatment of oxidative stress-related diseases, depending to the confirmation of large sample size and multi-center study in human

Papaya, The Fruit Which Normalizes Your Blood Pressure with No Side Effects

By Kyle J. Norton

Papaya may be considered a natural whole food for the prevention and treatment of hypertension, some scientists suggested.

Hypertension is another term of abnormally high blood pressure in the arteries.

Although h blood pressure usually does not cause symptoms some patients with the syndrome may experience dizziness and light head.

Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps out blood.

Underlying medical conditions such as kidney disease and long=term stress are associated with high blood pressure. Epidemiological studies strongly suggested that poor lifestyle habits, such as an unhealthy diet, obesity and lack of exercise, are some major risk factors which can contribute to the early onset of high blood pressure.

Some researchers also found that excessive energy intake and obesity are major causes of hypertension. Dr. Savica V, the lead author in the study "The effect of nutrition on blood pressure" wrote, "Obesity is associated with increased activity of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone and sympathetic nervous systems, possibly other mineralocorticoid activity, insulin resistance, salt-sensitive hypertension, and excess salt intake, and reduced kidney function".

High sodium chloride intake strongly predisposes to hypertension".

"Increased alcohol consumption may acutely elevate blood pressure. High intakes of potassium, polyunsaturated fatty acids, and protein, along with exercise and possibly vitamin D, may reduce blood pressure".

In the review of all the causable risk factors, you may find that the only natural way to prevent and treat hypertension is to follow a diet with a high intake of fruits and vegetable and whole grain and less in saturated and trans fat, red meat and processed food accompanied with a healthy lifestyle and moderate exercise.

Conventional hypertensive medications have undoubtedly prevented many deaths from heart disease in the past 30 years, but they have many side effects.

If you current taking hypertensive medicine, please make sure you know all the side effects for the preventive measure.

Papaya is a species of Carica Papaya, belongs to the family Caricaceae and native to the tropics of the Americas, and was first cultivated in Mexico and several centuries

Chemical constituents

Alkaloids, Cardenolides, Anthraquinones, Saponins, Tannin, phenol, flavonoid, anthocyanin, Benzyl glucosinolate, benzylisothiocyanate, 5-(Hydroxymethyl)-2-furancarboxaldehyde, 2,3-dihydro-3,5-dihydroxy-6-methyl-4H-pyran-4-one and 1,3-dihydroxy-2-propanone, etc.(a)

Malaysian plants pucuk ubi (Manihot esculenta), pucuk betik (Carica papaya), Ulam Raja (Cosmos caudatus), pegaga (Centella asiatica) and kacang botol (Psophocarpus tetragonolobus) was selected to the examine their effects on key enzymes related to type 2 diabetes and hypertension.

The hexane extract of pucuk ubi (95.01%) and dichloromethane extract of kacang botol (38.94%) showed the highest inhibitory potential against alpha-glucosidase in the alpha-glucosidase inhibition assay.

Furthermore, in the iACE inhibition assay, the inhibitory potential was highest in hexane extract of pegaga (48.45%) and dichloromethane extract of pucuk betik (59.77%).

These results suggested that papaya may have a nutraceutical potential for hyperglycemia and hypertension prevention associated with type 2 diabetes.

Male albino Wistar rats randomly were divided into three batches (15 rats per batch)-renal, DOCA-salt hypertensives, and normotensives.in the study to examine the antihypertensive effect of crude ethanol extract from the unripened fruit of Carica papaya.

Each batch was further divided into three groups-the untreated, hydrallazine and extract treated groups.

Before injection of crude ethanol extract, the basal (control) The mean arterial blood pressure (MAP) was 93.8 +/- 4.5, 175.2 +/- 5. 1 and 181.3 +/- 6.2 mmHg in the normotensive, renal and DOCA-salt hypertensives, respectively.

Groups treated with extract produced about 28% more depression of MAP than hydrallazine in the hypertensive groups treated with hydrallazine (200 microg/100 g i. v) and extract (20 mg/kg.i.v).

In vitro, using isolated rabbit arterial (aorta, renal and vertebral) strips showed that the papaya extract (10 microg/mL) produced relaxation of vascular muscle tone.

According to the findings, the fruit juice of C. papaya probably processes antihypertensive agent(s) which exhibits mainly alpha-adrenoceptor activity.

Taken all together, unripe fruit of papaya may have a significant effect in reducing the risk of hypertension and treatment of hypertension with no side effect.

Apricot, the Potential Anti Colon Cancer Functional Fruit, Scientists Find

 By Kyle J. Norton

Apricot maybe next generation of whole food medicine for the prevention and treatment of colon cancer, some studies suggested.

Colon cancer is the medical condition characterized by cell growth disorderly and irregularly in the tissue of the colon as a result of the alternation of DNA of the healthy cells.

Most case of colon cancer starts on the surfaced cells of the inner lining of the colon tissue. However, at the later stage, the cancerous cells of the colon can travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissue and organs.

The colon also known as the large bowel or large intestine is an organ which involves the absorption of water from the small bowel contents and breaks down of certain materials in the feces into substances in which some of them to be reabsorbed and reused by the body.

The causes of colon cancer are unknown, However, researchers do know that age, family history, ethnicity, overweight or obesity, excessive alcohol drinking and long-term use of tobacco are a most common risk factor of the colon cancer.

Some researchers suggested that good and poor choice of the diet may have potential effects to reduce and contribute to the risk of colon cancer.

People who follow the Western diet not only associated to higher risk but also the recurrent risk of colon cancer onset.

Dr. Alan Moss, the lead author in the study of "The Association Between Diet and Colorectal Cancer Risk: Moving Beyond Generalizations" wrote, "processed meat is carcinogenic to humans and lists processed meat as a group 1 substance. Processed meats result from salting, smoking, fermenting, or curing the meat, and common examples include ham, bacon, and sausage.5 Furthermore, red meat was declared as probably carcinogenic to humans, and red meat was listed as a group 2A substance.4 Red and processed meats are considered significant components of a “Western” diet. Other consumed substances that are associated with an increased risk of CRC include alcohol6 and tobacco".

On the other hand in the support of the healthy diet choice in the reduction of colon cancer risk, Dr.Jessie A. Satia, the lead scientists said, "the fruit-vegetable and metropolitan patterns were associated with more healthful dietary behaviors (e.g., higher vegetable intake and lower red meat consumption), and demographic/lifestyle characteristics typically correlated with low colon cancer risk".

The apricot tree is about 8–12 m tall and a trunk up to 40 cm diameter belongs to the family Rosaceae.

Apricot is classified with the family o the plum and has yellow to orange, often tinged red on the side which is exposed to the sun.

The chemical constituents of apricot include
Oleic acid, linoleic acid, palmitic.acid, glycolipids, phospholipids, benzoic acid (I), isorhamnetin (II), quercetin (III), kaempferol-3-O-beta-D-galactopyranoside (IV), isorhamnetin-3-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside (V), isoquercitrin (VI), hypericin (VII) and rutin (VIII)(a) and flavonoid glycosides.

Dr. Fahima Rashid, the lead author in the finding a natural and bioactive from food sources with no side effect suggested that the butanolic extract may have a profound effect in reducing the risk of colon cancer by inhibiting the expression of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.

The antibacterial effect of the extract was attributed to the presence of bioactive Flavonoid glycoside.

Futhermore, in the investigation of the anti-neoplastic effects of MK615, an extract from the Japanese apricot (Prunus mume), against 3 colon cancer cell lines, SW480, COLO, and WiDr, cultured with MK615, researchers found that
* MK615 inhibited growth and lysed SW480, COLO and WiDr cells in a dose-dependent manner.

* MK615 induced apoptosis after 6 h incubation, at which point the occurrence of apoptotic cells was 68.0%, 65.7% and 64.7% for SW480, COLO, and WiDr cells, respectively.

* MK615 induced cells death through massive cytoplasmic vacuoles (autophagosomes) in all three cell lines.

Dr. Mori S, the lead author wrote at the final report, "MK615 has an anti-neoplastic effect against colon cancer cells. The effect may be exerted by the induction of apoptosis and autophagy".

Taken altogether, apricot may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of colon cancer.

However, further data collection large example size and multi-centers studies performed with human consumption of the whole food or its bioactive compounds during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of apricot anti-colon cancer possibilities.

Tualang Honey Protects the Oral Cells Against Cancer With No Side Effects

Kyle J. Norton

Mouth/oral cancer is a medical condition associated with the irregular cell growth on the tissue of the mouth caused by genetic alteration of the cell DNA.

Most cases of mouth cancer start in the flat, thin cells (squamous cells) of the inner lining tissue that line the lips and the inside of the mouth.

According to the statistics provided by the American cancer society, in 2018, approximately, over 50,000 people will get oral cavity or oropharyngeal cancer. An estimated over 10,000 people will die of these cancers.in the United States.

The exact causes of mouth cancer are unknown. However, the increase in age, gender, exposure to radioactive, long-term use of tobacco use and excessive alcohol drinking, viral infection and genetic mutation are the most common prevalent risk factors found in people with mouth cancer.

Some researchers also suggested that people with immune system suppression due to the use of an immune suppressor are at the increased risk of the disease.

The Canadian Cancer Society in the explanation of how weakened immune system can induce mouth cancer, wrote, "Your immune system can be weakened after an organ transplant or treatment for an immune system disease. and "People with a weakened immune system have a higher risk of developing oral cancer, especially lip cancer".

Also, " The higher risk may be due to taking drugs that suppress your immune system. People with weakened immune systems are also more likely to get an HPV infection, which increases the risk of oral cancer"

If you experience symptoms of a sore that does heal  within a few days, a growth, lump or thickening of the skin or lining of your mouth, tongue and jaw pain that do not heal in weeks, persistent sore throat, difficult or  chewing and swallowing, please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility of mouth cancer.

Honey is the miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The rich golden liquid It is considered one of healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.

On finding a natural ingredient or whole food for the treatment of t inducing mouth cancer without inducing any side effect compared to surgery followed by chemo and.or radiotherapy researchers at the Universiti Sains Malaysia examine the antiproliferative activity of local honey (Tualang) on OSCC cell lines.

The study procedures include several concentrations of Tualang honey (1% - 20%) were applied directly on OSCC cell lines for 3, 6, 12, 24, 48 and 72 hours.

The study also used MTT assay to assess the cell viability and the Annexin V-FITC Apoptosis Detection Kit.to detect the cell apoptosis.

Application of Tualang honey induced cancer cells apoptosis observed by cell degradation and reduced in numbers.

In other words, the apoptotic cellular changes like becoming rounded, reduction in cell number, blebbed membrane and apoptotic nuclear changes like nuclear shrinkage, chromatin condensation, and fragmented nucleus were observed through MTT assay.

The MTT assay also suggested that Tualang honey exerts an inhibitory effect in a time and dose-dependent manner.

The efficacy was also found in the 50% inhibitory concentration (IC50) for OSCC of 4%.

The maximum inhibition of cell growth of ≥80% was observed in the concentration at 15%.

Dr. Ghashm AA the lead scientist at the final report wrote, "Tualang honey showed the antiproliferative effect on OSCC...cell lines by inducing early apoptosis".

Taken altogether, Tualang honey may be considered a functional food for the prevention and combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of mouth cancer.

Due to the limitation of the above study, further data collection large example size and multi-centers studies performed with human consumption of the whole food during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of Tualang honey anti-mouth cancer possibilities.

Avocado, the Anti Inflammatory Diseases Functional Food

By Kyle J. Norton

Intake avocado daily may have a strong effect in reducing the risk of acute and chronic inflammation, some researchers suggested.

Inflammation is a natural and systematic immune response with an aim to protect our body against the invasion of foreign pathogens.

Acute inflammation is caused by overproduction of proinflammatory cytokines which is activated the immune macrophages, a first line of the immune defense.

Chronic inflammation that lasts for several months and even year usually is the result of the immune system failing to eliminate all pathogenic invasion in the acute inflammation.

In some cases, chronic inflammation can also be caused by the immune white blood cells mistakenly attacks the body healthy tissue.

Some researchers suggested that long-term exposure to lower levels of irritants, such as industrial chemicals or polluted air may also cause chronic inflammation.

According to the statistic,  in 2000, nearly 125 million Americans were living with chronic conditions and 61 million (21%) had more than one. And these numbers are expected to increase substantially,

More scarcely,  3 of 5 people die due to chronic inflammatory diseases like stroke, chronic respiratory diseases, heart disorders, cancer, obesity, and diabetes, worldwide.

If you experience symptoms of depression, anxiety and mood disorders, persistent gastrointestinal complications like constipation, diarrhea, and acid reflux,  weight gain, and frequent infections, you may be at the early stage of the development of chronic inflammation. Please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.

Dr. Roma Pahwa and Dr. Ishwarlal Jialal in the article of chronic inflammation suggested that many dietary and lifestyle changes may be helpful in removing inflammation triggers and reducing chronic inflammation as listed below. The most effective is weight loss.

Avocado is commercially valuable fruit cultivated in tropical climates throughout the world. It is a green-skinned, pear-shaped fruit that ripens after harvesting and native to the Caribbean, Mexico, South America, and Central America, belonging to the flowering plant family Lauraceae.

In the finding a natural ingredient for the treatment of skin inflammation caused by exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation without inducing side effects, researchers at the Granot Initiative Center conducted a study to test the ability of unique lipid molecules, polyhydroxylated fatty alcohols (PFA), extracted from avocado, to reduce UVB-induced damage and inflammation in skin.

Introducing PFA to keratinocytes prior to their exposure to UVB exerted a protective effect, increasing cell viability, decreasing the secretion of IL-6, and PGE(2), the proinflammatory cytokines and enhancing DNA repair.

In human skin explants, treating with PFA reduced significantly UV-induced cellular damage.

Furthermore, in the evaluation of the anti-inflammatory effect of the combination of avocado soybean unsaponifiables (ASU) and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) on cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) expression which is responsible for increase the inflammatory response and prostaglandin E(2) (PGE(2)) production in cytokine-activated equine chondrocytes, the cells harvested from normal or OA joints .

Before application of the combination of avocado soybean unsaponifiables (ASU) and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), equine chondrocytes responded to cytokine activation by up-regulated gene expression of COX-2 and increased PGE(2) production.

Application of ASU and EGCG marginally inhibited COX-2 expression and PGE(2) production in activated chondrocytes.

The combination of ASU and EGCG reduced COX-2 expression close to non-activated control levels and significantly inhibited PGE(2) production.

The inhibition of COX-2 expression and PGE(2) production was associated with the inhibition of NF-kappaB translocation in the regulation of cytokines and immune responses.

These results suggested that the combination may offer an attractive supplement or alternative to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in the management of osteoarthritis, a chronic inflammatory disease.

Additional study on the effects of avocado soybean unsaponifiables (ASU) on proinflammatory mediators in chondrocytes and monocyte/macrophage-like cells, researchers also found that
* ASU reduced proinflammatory cytokines, TNF-alpha, IL-1beta, COX-2, and iNOS expression in LPS-activated chondrocytes to levels similar to nonactivated control levels.

* The suppression of COX-2 and iNOS expression was paralleled by a significant reduction in PGE(2) and nitrite, respectively.

Taken altogether, avocado processed a significant anti-inflammatory activity may be considered a functional food for the prevention of inflammatory disease and an adjunct therapy combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of chronic inflammatory diseases with no side effects.
