@Herbal Arnica, the Potent Natural Antibiotic Alternative

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a natural antibiotics alternative remedy for the treatment of acute infection and infectious diseases with no side effects, some studies suggested.

Antimicrobial activity is an action that kills microorganisms or stops their growth. In human, these actions are carried out daily by the immune system.

Infection is a processive condition caused by the battle of the invasion of microorganisms and the host immune white blood cells. Microorganism during the battle might produce toxins which can lead to the initiation of infection-related transmissible disease or communicable disease.

In acute infections, the systematic immune system responds properly to the invasive pathogen, leading to a brief battle after which the immune system is always victorious.

However, chronic infections occur when the immune cannot kill off the invasive stimuli in the acute phase of infection, leading to chronic infectious diseases.

Arnica is a herbaceous species, genus perennial, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to Europe and Asia.

The herb has been used in herbal medicine for centuries to treat strains, sprains, and bruises.

Besides containing contain helenalin as it main ingredient used as an anti-inflammatory agent, the herbal medicine also contains 11,13- dihydrohelenaline, chamissonolid, Sesquiterpene lactone, lignans of the furofuran, dibenzylbutyrolactone, dibenzylbutyrolactol types, pinoresinol, epipinoresinol, phillygenin, matairesinol, nortrachelogenin, and nortracheloside, six dibenzylbutyrolactol derivative, etc.

In the study to assess the antibacterial and antifungal potential of some Romanian medicinal plants, including arnica, on a series of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, and also against two fungal strains. researchers at the National Institute R&D for Biological, found
* The vegetal extracts showed antimicrobial activity preferentially directed against the planktonic fungal and bacterial growth,

* The effect against biofilm formation and development was demonstrated only against S. aureus and C. albicans.

These results suggested that herbal Arnica processes a strong antibacterial and fungal activity in comparison to those of conventional antibiotics.

Dr.Stanciuc AM, the lead scientist, after taking into account of co and confounders said, " the studied plant extracts are a significant source of natural alternatives to antimicrobial therapy, thus avoiding antibiotic therapy, the use of which has become excessive in recent years".

Additionally, in the study to reaffirm the Arnica as an anti-inflammatory, antifungal, antiviral and bacterial agent used thousands of years in folk medicine for several purposes, researchers at the State University of Canipinas conducted an evaluation to examine the antimicrobial activity of Arnica in vitro.

In comparison to propolis extracts at the dose of 20 microl, the Arnica extract demonstrates an antimicrobial activity lesser than those of propolis extracts

Arnica extract showed slight inhibition of the adherence of the growing cells by 19% for Strep. mutans and 15% for Strep. sobrinus and of water-insoluble glucan formation (29%) at these same concentrations.

Taken all together, herbal Arnica may be considered natural antibiotics for the prevention and treatment of acute and chronic infection without inducing any side effects.

However, further data collection large example size and multi-centers studies performed with human consumption of the whole food or its bioactive compounds during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of herbal Arnica anti-acute and chronic infection possibilities.

@ How to Normalize Your Levels of Fasting Glucose with Beetroot Juice Naturally with No Side Effects

By Kyle J. Norton

Beet or beetroot may be considered a functional food for normalizing your levels of fasting glucose with no side effects, some scientists found.

Diabetes is a medical condition characterized by insufficient insulin (insulin resistance) entering the bloodstream to regulate glucose.

The disease is either caused by cells in pancreas dying off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol.

In some cases, diabetes is also caused by allergic reactions of cells in the immune system.

Genetic preposition such as (TCF7L2) gene, unhealthy diet, and lifestyle are some of the major prevalent risk factors that can facilitate the early onset of the disease.

Dr. Mariana Murea, the lead author in the study wrote, "There is a complementary role for behavioral and environmental factors modulating the genetic susceptibility and diabetes risk" and 'The offspring of a parent with T2D face a 40% lifetime risk of developing T2D, increasing to 70% when both parents have T2D".

In the diet and lifestyle aspects, Dr. Waqas Sami, the lead author in the joint study led by the Universiti Malaysia Pahang said, "The etiology of T2DM is complex and is associated with irreversible risk factors such as age, genetics, race, and ethnicity and reversible factors such as diet, physical activity, and smoking" and "Dietary habits and sedentary lifestyle are the major factors for rapidly rising incidence of DM among developing countries".

These results suggested if you follow the role of traditional diet with high in fruits and vegetables and less in meat and processed foods accompanied to a healthy lifestyle with moderate exercise, you are at the reduced risk of diabetes.

Beet is best known as the beetroot or garden beet and belong to the amaranth family. It is a perennial plant with leafy stems growing to 1–2 m tall.

Besides the major chemical constituents betalains and phenolics, the vegetable also contains a lesser amount of isobetanin, probetanin, neobetanin, indicaxanthin, vulgaxanthins, etc.

In the concerns of high-fat or high-carbohydrate meals induced endothelial dysfunction in the facilitation of the onset of abnormally high blood glucose in healthy individuals and patients with insulin resistance or type 2 diabetes, researchers launched a study to examine the endothelial function before and after injection of beetroot juice.

The study includes 20 healthy overweight and slightly obese men with a BMI between 28 and 35 kg/m(2). Participants were given randomly a mixed meal providing 56.6 g of fat with beetroot juice or a control drink.

After examining the postprandial changes in serum triacylglycerol (TAG) (P = 0.69), plasma glucose (P = 0.84) and insulin (P = 0.67) concentrations were comparable between the meals, researchers found that
* After consumption of beetroot juice, the postprandial impairment in FMD following a standardized mixed meal was improved (P = 0.030) compared with the control drink.

* Following beetroot juice consumption, plasma concentrations of the circulating NO pool were higher at T60, T120, and T240 (P < 0.001 at all time points).

By improving the endothelial function in the reduction of the expression of postprandial glucose and lipid excursions, beetroot juice inhibited the insulin resistance, the major primary cause of type 2 diabetes.

These results suggested that beetroot juice exerts a significant effect in the improvement of endothelial function which decreases levels of fasting glucose after the intake of a meal, through the effects of nitric oxide (NO), a bioactive compound found abundantly in the vegetable juice.

Taken altogether, beetroot juice may be considered functional and therapeutic food in the treatment of  blood glucose after fasting in patients of type 2 diabetes, caused by endothelial dysfunction.

Chaste Tree Berry (Vitex Agnus-castus), The Herbal Remedy Which May Processes Anti-Leukemia Potency, Scientists Say

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a herbal ingredient for the treatment of leukemia with no side effects, some studies suggested.

Leukemia is a medical condition characterized by the production of high numbers of abnormal white blood cells. The disease is a group of cancers originated in the soft, inner part of the bones (bone marrow).

At the advanced stage, the cancerous cells can travel a distance away to infect other healthy cells of other tissue and organs, particularly, in the tissue of lymph nodes, spleen, liver, central nervous system.

The exact causes of leukemia are unknown, however, researchers do know that smoking, genetic disorders such as Down syndrome. blood disorders and previous treatment for cancer with chemotherapy or radiation are the most common risk factors associated with the onset of the disease.

Leukemia can be classified into acute and chronic leukemia. In acute and chronic leukemia, the abnormal cells can multiply quickly. On the other hand, chronic leukemia, progresses slowly and early symptoms may be very mild.

According to the statistic provided by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada, in Canada, leukemia is the most common form of cancer in children 0-14 years of age and the 6th most common among young adults 15 to 29 years.

Every year over 900 children, 0-14 years of age are diagnosed with cancer, accounting for 11% of all childhood cancer.

Most common symptoms of leukemia include persistent fever or chills, fatigue, weakness, frequent or severe infections, unintentional weight loss, swollen lymph nodes, enlarged liver or spleen.

If you are experiencing some of the above symptoms, please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility of leukemia.

Chaste tree berry is a species of Vitex agnus-castus, genus Vitex, belonging to the family Lamiaceae, native to the Mediterranean region.

The tree has been used in herbal medicine for thousands of year as an aphrodisiac herb and is considered as Queen herb in treating menstrual problems and discomforts by taking it in a prolonged period of time.

There was a report suggested that chaste tree berry stems and leaves can be used by women as bedding "to cool the heat of lust" during the time of the Thesmophoria,

Chemical constituents
1. β-citronellol
2. Labdane-type diterpenoids,
3. Halimane-type diterpenoid,
4. Oleanane-type triterpenoids,
5. Ursane-type triterpenoids,
6. Sesquiterpenoid,
7. Flavonoid
8. Viteagnusins C, D, E, F, G, and H
9. Abietane-type diterpenoids

In the study to reaffirm the extract from the ripe fruit of Vitex Angus-cactus (Vitex), may be considered an anticancer candidate, researchers at the joint investigation led by the Tokyo University of Pharmacy and Life Sciences conducted a study to provide a molecular rationale for clinical development in anticancer therapy(SB203580, an inhibitor for p38 MAPK), a detailed mechanism underlying the efficacy of Vitex against HL-60 cells.

* Vitex and the addition of SB203580 induced a dose- and time-dependent decreased cancer cell viability associated with induction of apoptosis and G(2)/M cell cycle arrest.

* SB203580 significantly suppressed Vitex-induced phosphorylation of histone H3, a downstream molecule of p38 MAPK involved in the induction of tumor cells.

* Vitex inhibited HL-60 cancer cells through, the mediation of cytotoxicity.

* A decline in ROS levels along with enhanced apoptosis was observed after treatment with Vitex.

These results suggested that chaste tree berry inhibited the HL 60 cells by increasing the expression of ROS in the facilitated cytotoxicity and inducing apoptosis through cell cycle arrest.

In the summary of the findings, Dr. Kikuchi H, the lead author said, "These results may have important implications for appropriate clinical uses of Vitex and provide novel insights into the interaction between Vitex and other conventional drugs capable of affecting intracellular redox status".

Further differentiation of the cytotoxicity of Vitex agnus-castus fruit extract and its major component, casticin against the leukemia cell lines, HL-60 and U-937, researchers found that Vitex and casticin induced cytotoxicity on both cell lines in a dose-depended manner. and HL-60 cells were more sensitive to the cytotoxicity of Vitex/casticin compared to U-937 cells.

Since the HL-60 cell line is more immature than the U-937 cell line, these results suggested that the levels of cytotoxicity of Vitex/casticin were largely attributed to the types of leukemia cells.

Taken altogether, Chaste tree berry may be considered a functional food and an adjunct therapy combined with conventional medicine for treatment of leukemia without inducing any side effects.

However, due to the limitation of the studies, further data collection on large example size and multi-centers studies performed with human consumption of the whole food during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of chaste tree berry anti-leukemia possibilities.

@Herbal Andrographis, The Herbal Remedy Which Suppresses Rheumatoid Arthritis

By Kyle J. Norton

Andrographis paniculata may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, some researchers found.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disorder characterized by immune system mistakenly attacks the joint tissue, leading to the symptoms of swollen, and painful joints. The pain and stiffness in patients with RA often worsen following rest.

In most cases, bones, cartilage, tendons, and ligaments associated with the joint also were found to have certain damage in patients with RA. These may be a result of synovium covering the joints  releasing chemicals during the attack by the immune system that causes the damage to nearby tissue

As of today, researchers do not know What causes the immune system to attack the joint. However, they do know that certain risk factors such as gene mutation, hormone change, smoking are associated with the early onset of the disease.

The disease affects more women than men and generally occurs after the ages of 40 and diminishes the quality of life of many elderly

Dr. Júlia Kurkó, the lead author in the study of  "Genetics of Rheumatoid Arthritis — A Comprehensive Review" wrote, "the heritability of RA has been estimated to be about 60 %, while the contribution of the human leukocyte antigen (HLA) to heritability has been estimated to be 11–37 %".

In hormone perspective, Oxford Academic wrote "RA is the most common chronic systemic autoimmune disease, with a higher prevalence in women, suggesting female hormonal factors play a role in the development of the disease" and "understanding their impact on RA development is clinically relevant and may result in specific preventive interventions in high-risk populations".

If you are experiencing symptoms of pe have persistent joint pain, tenderness, swelling, redness, stiffness, and loss of joint range of motion, you may have RA. Please make sure you visit your doctor to rule out the RA possibility.

Andrographis paniculata, also known as Andrographis is a herbaceous plant, genus Andrographis, belonging to the family Acanthaceae, native to India and Sri Lanka.

The herb has been used in traditional Siddha and Ayurvedic in treating the common cold, flu, upper respiratory infections, infectious diseases, diarrhea, dysentery, cholera, pneumonia, swollen lymph nodes, leprosy, bronchitis, sore throats, tuberculosis, chicken pox, etc.

Besides the main ingredient andrographolides, giving the plant a bitter taste, other ingredients includediterpene lactones, such as: neoandrographolide, andrographiside, 14-doexy-11, 12-didehydro andrographolide, etc., flavonoinds viz., oroxylin, wogonin, andrographidines A, B, C, D, E, F.

In the study to reaffirm the Andrographis paniculata (Burm. f.) Wall ex Nees (Acanthaceae) anti-inflammatory effects, attributed to the main constituent andrographolide which is proposed as an alternative in the treatment of autoimmune disease, researchers at the Universidad Austral de Chile conducted an investigation of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) effects on the tablets (Paractin) made of an extract of A. paniculata (30% total andrographolides).

Tablets (Paractin) made by an extract of A. paniculata (30% total andrographolides) were administered three times a day for 14 weeks, after a 2-week washout period to 60 patients with active RA.

The intensity of joint pain decreased in the active vs placebo group at the end of treatment.

According to the returned questionnaire from the patients, application of the tablets demonstrated a significant diminishing for week in tender joint,, number of swollen joints, total grade of swollen joint -0.27 95%CI (-0.48 to -0.07; p = 0.010), number of tender joints, total grade of swollen joints, total grade of tender joints and HAQ associated with a reduction of rheumatoid factor, IgA, and C4

Dr, Burgos RA, the lead author at the end of the study said, "A. paniculata could be a useful "natural complement" in the treatment of AR".

In the perspective of the pseudo-tumoral expansion of fibroblast-like synoviocytes, a hallmark of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), researchers found that andrographolide treatment of rheumatoid arthritis fibroblast-like synoviocytes (RAFLSs) isolated from RA patients decreased the proliferation of RAFLSs in a dose-dependent manner.

Andrographolide also showed a G0/G1 cell cycle arrest in RAFLSs, according to the cell cycle analysis using propidium iodide (PI) staining.

Injection Andrographolide also demonstrated the increase of the expression of cell-cycle inhibitors p21, a regulator of cell cycle progression at G1 and S phase. and p27 in the G1 phase of the cell cycle and a concomitant reduction of cyclin-dependent kinase 4, a cell division protein in a dose-dependent.

Moreover, andrographolide-treated RAFLSs displayed a significant decrease in the Bcl-2/Bax ratio compared to untreated cells.

Dr, Yan J said, at the final report, "andrographolide exerts anti-growth and pro-apoptotic effects on RAFLSs, thus may have therapeutic potential for the treatment of RA".

Taken altogether, herbal Andrographis processed high amounts of bioactive compound Andrographolide may be considered a functional food for the prevention and combined with the primary therapy for treatment of RA.

Herbal Chamomile, the Potential Anti Anxiety Remedy, Scientists Suggest

By Kyle J. Norton, Master of Nutrition

Chamomile may be considered an adjunct therapy or combined with conventional medicine for treatment of anxiety, some scientists suggested.

Anxiety is a psychological disorder characterized by a constant worry about future events and fear of current events.

A prolonged period of stress from work, school, the personal relationship such as marriage and from an emotional trauma such as the death of a loved one or from a serious medical illness can elevate the onset of the syndrome.

Other causes of anxiety may include long-term use of certain medication and illicit drug, such as cocaine.

Some researchers also suggested the risk of anxiety are associated with genetic mutation inherited from the parent and traumatic events that alter brain structure and function.

Some people may experience some levels of anxiety in low oxygen levels in high-altitude areas.

Altogether, one may say, anxiety disorder is a result of a combination of biological, psychological, and other individual factors.

If you have some of the symptoms of feeling nervous, restless or tense,  a sense of impending danger, panic or doom,  an increased heart rate, breathing rapidly, and persistent sweating and trembling. Please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility of anxiety disorder.

Chamomile is also known as camomile, a common name of many species daisy-like plants in the family Asteraceae.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory constituents and to treat menstrual cramps and sleep disorders, reduce cramping and spastic pain in the bowels, relieve excessive gas and bloating in the intestine, etc.

Chemical ingredients include
Guaianolides matricarin and achillin, acetoxyachillin and leucodin (= desacetoxymatricarin), corresponding C-11 stereoisomers(a),(Z)-2-β-d-glucopyranosyloxy-4-methoxycinnamic acid (cis-GMCA), chlorogenic acid, (E)-2-β-d-glucopyranosyloxy-4-methoxycinnamic acid (trans-GMCA), quercetagetin-7-O-β-d-glucopyranoside, luteolin-7-O-β-d-glucoside, apigenin-7-O-β-d-glucoside, chamaemeloside, apigenin 7-O-(6″-O-acetyl-β-d-glucopyranoside), apigenin] and one polyacetylene (tonghaosu)(b).

In the finding, a natural ingredient for the treatment of anxiety with no side effects, researchers at the launched a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled and tolerability trial to examine Matricaria recutita (chamomile) extract activity in patients with mild to moderate generalized anxiety disorder (GAD).

In a total of 61 outpatients with mild to moderate GAD were enrolled, and 57 were randomized to either double-blind chamomile extract (n = 28) or placebo therapy (n = 29) for 8 weeks.

Application of Matricaria recutita (chamomile) extract demonstrated a significantly greater reduction in the mean total Hamilton Anxiety Rating (HAM-A) score compared to placebo.

There are no intolerated adverse effects found in both groups.

Dr. Amsterdam JD, the lead author at the final report, wrote. "chamomile may have modest anxiolytic activity in patients with mild to moderate GAD".

Additionally, in the study to determine whether commercially available botanicals directly affect the primary brain enzymes responsible for gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) metabolism, researchers launched an analysis of the anxiolytic effects of chamomile aqueous and ethanolic plant extracts.

The chamomile aqueous extract showed a significant inhibition of GAD activity (0.11-0.65 mg/mL) without affecting the gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) metabolism.

These findings suggested chamomile aqueous extract exerts the anxiolytic activity through interaction with the glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD) in the influence of neurotransmission.

Furthermore, in the study of the sedative effects of Apigenin, the bioactive compound isolated from Chamomile in mice, researchers found that
* Apigenin competitively inhibited the binding of flunitrazepam, a powerful hypnotic drug that is a benzodiazepine derivative with a Ki of 4 microM in exerting the sedative activity.

* Apigenin had a clear anxiolytic activity in mice are the elevated plus-maze which are used to test the anxiety in the laboratory.

Increased application of Apigenin by a 10-fold compared to normal concentrations display a mild sedative effect as seen on a 26% reduction in ambulatory locomotor activity and a 35% decrement in hole-board parameters.

Taken altogether, herbal chamomile with abundant bioactive compounds may be considered a secondary therapy or combined with conventional medicine for the treatment of anxiety, pending to larger and multi-centers human studies.

Herbal Calendula, the Potent Anti Edema Functional Remedy

By Kyle J. Norton

Herbal Calendula may have a potential effect in reducing risk and treatment of edema, some scientists suggested.

Edema is a condition characterized by an abnormal accumulation of fluid in certain tissues within the body due to injury or inflammation.

In most cases, edema occurs under the surfaces of the skin in the leg and ankle. However, fluids can also be accumulated in the lungs (pulmonary edema).

Without the assistance of diagnosis, researchers can not pinpoint the exact causes of edema.

There are numbers of risk factor associated with the onset of the swellings, such as low levels of albumin that keeps the blood in the vessels, allergic reaction, blood clots. Some medical conditions such as congestive heart failure, kidney diseases and long-term intake medicine such as NSAIDs and calcium channel blockers also increased the risk of edema.

Some researchers suggested that under normal conditions, medicine that removes excess fluid and reduces intake salt can be effective. However, if the condition of edema is caused by underlying disease, separated medicine treatment may be required.

If you are experiencing symptoms of heavy leg and ankle and shortness of breath, please check with your doctor to rule out the edema possibility.

Calendula is also known as pot marigold, annual or perennial herbaceous plants of about 12–20 species of genus Calendula, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to Southern Europe.

The herb has been used in herbal medicine as spasmolytic, spasmogenic, inflammatory effects and to treat abdominal cramps, wound healing, skin diseases, colitis, constipation, etc.

Chemical ingredients
Besides major chemical constituents of triterpenoids, flavonoids, coumarines, quinones, volatile oil, carotenoids and amino acids, the herb also contains loliolide (calendin), calendulin and n-paraffins.

In the study to examine the anti-inflammatory effect of Calendula officinalis flower extract against paw edema, researchers at the Amala Cancer Research Centre, launched an investigation in the paw edema of animals induced by carrageenan and dextran.

Oral injection of 250 and 500 mg/kg body weight of Calendula extract exerted a significant inhibition (50.6 and 65.9% respectively) in paw edema of animals by 41.9% in the carrageenan group and 42.4% in the dextran group, respectively through the anti-inflammatory activity.

In chronic inflammatory model induced by injection of formalin, administration of 250 and 500 mg/kg body weight of Calendula extract produced an inhibition of 32.9 and 62.3% respectively compared to controls.

Further examination also found that proinflammatory cytokines activated by macrophage of the immune system in the response to infection are also reduced significantly.

Other proinflammatory proteins such as IL- 1beta, IL-6, TNF-alpha and IFN-gamma and acute phase protein, C- reactive protein (CRP) in edema mice produced by LPS injection were inhibited significantly by the extracts in different doses.

These results suggested that herbal Calendula inhibits edema caused by inflammation through its anti-inflammatory expression.

Additionally, in the study to reaffirm the efficacy of Calendula anti-inflammation against the progression of edema, researchers at the niversità di Trento conducted a differentiation on the anti-inflammatory chemical constituents of the herb.

13 out of 15 terpenoids from Calendula were found to process topical anti-inflammatory activities with respect to the inhibition of croton oil-induced ear edema in the mouse.

Three derivatives of Rings A, D, and E of faradiol, the C(16) benzyl ether 15, the C(30) aldehyde 24, and the C(30) primary alcohol 25 isolated from the herb also showed a significantly improved anti-inflammatory potency.

Taken altogether, herbal Calendula with the abundant anti-inflammatory bioactive compounds may have a potential effect in the prevention and treatment of inflammatory edema.

Arctostaphylos uva-ursi, the Herbal Remedy Which Kills Bladder Cancer Cells in Vitro, Scientists Say

By Kyle J. Norton

Herbal Arctostaphylos uva-ursi may have a potential in the prevention and treatment of bladder cancer, some scientists suggested.

Bladder cancer is a medical and chronic condition characterized by cell growth uncontrollably and disorderly in the tissue of the bladder.

Most bladder cancer starts first on the surface of the inner lining tissue of the bladder. As the cancer progress to the advanced stage, the malignant cells can infect other healthy tissue through the circulation of blood and fluid.

Bladder cancer that spreads to other parts of the body is known as metastatic bladder cancer.

According to the statistic, every year, approximately, over 80,000 adults, including 62,380 men and 18,810 women in the United States are diagnosed with bladder cancer, causing the of deaths of 12,520 men and 4,720 women.

The 5-year relative survival rate of all stages of bladder cancer is about 77%. However, the 5-year relative survival rate for people diagnosed with stage 0 of bladder cancer is about 98%,

The statistic strongly suggested, if bladder cancer is diagnosed in the early stage, it is treatable.

The exact causes of bladder cancer are unknown. However, the age of 50 and over, men, smoking, long-term exposure to harmful chemicals are associated with the increased risk of the disease,

Some researchers suggested certain medical conditions such as diabetes, previous treatment of radiotherapy and chemotherapy and early menopause are also some of the prevalent risk factors that may increase the early onset of bladder cancer.

Arctostaphylos uva-ursi is one of the species of Bearberry, in the genus Arctostaphylos, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to northern North America, Asia, and Europe.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as diuretic agent and to treat urinary problems, including bladder infections, kidney infection, kidney stone, pelvic pain, etc.

The Ingredients
It contains arbutin, ursolic acid, tannic acid, gallic acid, some essential oil and resin, hydroquinones tannins, phenolic glycosides and flavonoids.

In the reaffirm of traditional medicine use of herbal Arctostaphylos uva-ursi for treatment of various types of cancer, researchers at the Chung-Ang University College of Medicine launched an investigation to examine the effects of Arbutin, a glycosylated hydroquinone extracted from the bearberry plant (Arctostaphylos species) on TCCSUP human bladder carcinoma cell.

At the dose at concentrations of < 500 microg/ml, Arbutin did not exhibit any cytotoxic effects in TCCSUP cells.

In different concentrations that are higher than 500microg/ml, Arbutin significantly decreased TCCSUP cell proliferation in a time-dependent manner.

According to the cell cycle analysis, arbutin strongly disrupted the cell cycle also in a time-dependent manner.

Furthermore, arbutin led to the inactivation of the extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK), which is known to critically regulate cell proliferation.

The in-depth analysis also found that arbutin markedly increases the expression of the cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor p21(WAF1/CIP1)which is considered a key mediator of p53-dependent cell cycle arrest.

Where p53, also known as TP53, is a protein which processes a function in regulating the cell cycle division and hence functions as a tumor suppression.

Dr. Li H, the lead author, after taking into account of co and confounders, said, " arbutin inhibits TCCSUP cell proliferation via ERK inactivation and p21 up-regulation".

Abnormal activation of ERK was found to in human cancer due to DNA mutation. The combination of ERK pathway inhibitors (cytostatic agents) and conventional anticancer drugs (cytotoxic agents) are an excellent basis for scientists to develop new chemotherapeutic strategies against cancer.

Taken altogether, herbal Arctostaphylos uva-ursi containing a high volume of Arbutin may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and combined with conventional medicine for treatment of bladder cancer,

However, further data collection large example size and multi-centers studies performed with human consumption of the whole food or its bioactive compounds during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of herbal Arctostaphylos uva-ursi anti-bladder cancer possibilities.
