Strawberries, The Healthy Fruit Which Protects Cell Membranes Integrity Against Lipid Peroxidation in Induction of Chronic Syndromes and Diseases, Researchers Reveal

Kyle J. Norton (Master of Nutrition, All right reserved)

Strawberries may be the next natural whole used as inhibitor for treatment of  syndromes and diseases caused by over expression of lipid peroxidation, the process which free radical steal molecules from the lipids of the cell membranes to induce cells damage.

Lipid peroxidation occurred naturally in small amount in the body. In healthy individual, the process generated by ROS is neutralized by antioxidants produced in the host tissue.

However, over expression of lipid peroxidant can cause imbalance of the ratio of free radicals and antioxidants, weakening the antioxidant enzyme in induction of oxidative stress, a leading cause of numbers of chronic diseases, including diabetes,.... and cardiovascular disease.

More precisely, over expression of free radicals is characterized by inflammation or cell injury hydroxyoctadecadienoic acids (HODEs), markers of disease involving oxidative stress of low density lipoproteinomes (LDL) at 10-100 higher concentration in compared to LDL from healthy individuals.

Epidemiological studies also found that the effect of selected dietary factors plays an essential role of lipids in induction of oxidative stress and antioxidant defenses. Increase intake of antioxidant vitamins C (ascorbic acid) and E (alpha tocopherol) and the type of fatty acids (mono- and poly-unsaturated) may have a strong implication in reduced over expression of lipid peroxidation.

Truly, lipid peroxidant is a double edge sword, on one hand, under normal condition, it exerts physiological and protective function as signaling molecule stimulating gene expression and cell survival.  And on the other hand, in the over expression environment, the process plays a cytotoxic role in inhibiting gene expression and promoting cell death.

Cholesterol is needed for our body to build cell walls, make hormones and vitamin D, and create bile salts that help you digest fat. However too much of it can be dangerous because cholesterol cannot dissolve in your blood.

The special particle called lipoprotein moves this waxy, soft substance from place to place.

If you have too much low density lipoprotein LDL, overtime over expression of lipid peroxidation can cause cholesterol  building up in your arterial walls, leading to  arterial blockage induction of heart attack and stroke.

Strawberries is a genius of Fragaria × ananassa belongs to the family Roseaceae., grown all over the world with suitable climate for commercial profits and for health benefits.

According to the study by the Università Politecnica delle Marche, stawberry processes high content of essential nutrients and beneficial phytochemicals, such as major antioxidants anthocyanin and ellagitannins which has been found to inhibit ROS in initiation of cytotoxic attack of the cell membrane, a leading cause of lipid peroxidants.

Highest concentrations of anthocyanins were found from ripe strawberry in compared to unripe one.

Furthermore, the study of strawberry flavonoids in extertion of potent antioxidants and anti-inflammatory activity, researchers conducted a test of freeze-dried strawberry powder (FSP) properties of lowering fasting lipids and biomarkers of oxidative stress and inflammation at four weeks in compared to baseline.

In the total of 16 female enrolled in the study, 3 features of metabolic syndrome with waist circumference >35 inches, triglycerides > 150 mg/dL, fasting glucose > 100 mg/dL and < 126 mg/dL, HDL <50 mg/dL, or blood pressure >130/85 mm Hg).

Participants were given two cups of the strawberry drink daily for four weeks with each cup had 25 g FSP blended in water. Biomarkers of oxidative stress and inflammation were measured using ELISA techniques. Plasma ellagic acid was measured using HPLC-UV techniques.

At the end of the study, researchers found that
* Total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol levels were significantly lower at 4 weeks versus baseline (-5% and -6%, respectively, p < 0.05),

* Lipid peroxidation in the form of malondialdehyde and hydroxynonenal (-14%, p < 0.01) was also lower significantly.

* Interestingly, Oxidized-LDL showed a decreasing trend at 4 weeks

These results suggested that short-term supplementation of freeze-dried strawberries exert hypocholesterolemic effects and decrease lipid peroxidation in women with metabolic syndrome.

Moreover, in the examine the effects of strawberry major phytochemicals on the radicals DPPH and OH with doese ofrom 50-100 μl extract in vitro, researchers showed that
* Injection of strawberry deceases activity of lipid peroxidation (LPO) through intercepted levels of level of Malondialdehyde (MDA)-2-thiobarbituric acid in compared to baseline.

* Administration of strawberry extract, depending on the decrease in LPO formation, also preserved amounts of other antioxidants such as oleic acid and linoleic acid.

Dr. Ozsahin AD, the lead author at the Bitlis Eren University, after taking into accounts of other co and con founders, said, "Consequently, it has been confirmed that the strawberry fruit that has a scavenging effect against the radicals prevents that lipid peroxidation in in vitro environment"..

DPPH is an organic chemical compound 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl composed of stable free-radical molecules,

The findings strongly suggested that strawberries processed numbers of antioxidants may be used as functional food in inhibited free radicals over expression causes of lipid peroxidants, a leading cause of chronic syndromes and diseases.

Banana, The Fruit Which Promotes Gut Microbiota and Bowel Movement Against Acute and Chronic Constipation, Medline Studies Show

Kyle J. Norton (Master of Nutrition, All right reserved)
Banana may be used as functional foods in prevention and treatment of acute and chronic constipation, some scientists suggested.

Constipation is natural condition characterized by infrequence or hard to pass of bowel movements

People with chronic constipation may experience symptoms of abdominal pain, bloating,.... and a feeling of not completely passed the bowel movement.

Untreated long term constipation may increase risk of hemorrhoids, anal fissure or fecal impaction, the most common complications of patient with chronic condition.

Acute constipation is a condition which starts suddenly and lasts for a 3 days or less due to prolonged inactivity, medication, dehydration, or missing a bowel movement. And chronic constipation is condition of a stool frequency of less than three per week that lasts several months.

Believe or not, constipation is the most common digestive complaint in the North America.

The prevalence of chronic constipation ranges from 2-28%, affecting 63 million people in North America . Some studies suggested that prevalence of constipation increases with age and is more common in women than men.

The exact causes of constipation are still under evaluation. However, some researchers suggested that medical condition such as colon cancer, colon damage, diabetes, thyroid disorders, Parkinson’s disease, pregnancy and medications such as pain medications (narcotics), blood pressure medications (calcium channel blockers), anti-seizure medication, and antispasmodics are common risk factors  of constipation onset.

Furthermore, aging which has a strong implication in structural lesions of the colon may also associate to increased risk of the condition.

Dr. Lazebnik LB, in the final report of chronic constipation conducted by using data collected from 1189 randomly selected subjects older than 18 year old, said, "... low level of dietary fiber and fluid intake and low physical activity (in male younger 55 y.o. with increased body mass index)".

Banana is the common name of a genus of tropical herbaceous plants. It can grow from 3 to 9 m and belongs to the family of the lily and the orchid.

2. Vitamin C
3. Fiber
4. Potassium
5. Magnesium
6. Iron7. Etc.

Chemical constituents
1. Sterols
2. 3-Methyl butyl butanoate ester
3. steryl esters
4. Diacylglycerols,
5. SAteryl glucosides,
6. Long chain fatty alcohols
7. Aromatic compounds
8. Linoleic acid
9. Linolenic acid
10. Oleic acids
11. Lectin
12. Fructooligosaccharides

In the study of fructooligosaccharides (FOS) which are oligosaccharides occurred naturally in banana, researchers found that
* Dietary FOS are not hydrolyzed by small intestinal glycosidases and reach the cecum structurally unchanged.

* FOS are considered as soluble dietary fibre which processes a strong effect in prevention of risk acute constipation and treatment of chronic constipation.

* Furthermore, FOS are increasingly included in food products and infant formulas due to their prebiotic effect stimulate the growth of nonpathogenic intestinal microflora

* Moreover, consumption of banana fructooligosaccharides (FOS) not only increases fecal bolus and the frequency of depositions, but at a dose of 4-15 g/day given to healthy subjects, the oligosaccharides also will reduce constipation, one of the growing problems of modern society, and newborns during the first months of life.

These results suggested that banana containing major compound of fructooligosaccharides (FOS) may be used as functional foods in improved digestive system in absorbed nutrients and fluids and promoted bowel movement in prevention and treatment of acute and chronic constipation.

Unfortunately, in the investigated the significance and risk factors of bowel obstruction caused by the consumption of wild bananas (BOWB) in Laos, researchers at the SFE Medical Project suggested that while banana fruits are considered as digestive enhancer, intake of wild banana which often containing seeds can cause bowel obstruction, including constipation.

According to the study, out of participants of 227, 91.2% had eaten WB; 46.3% had also eaten the seeds and 45.4% knew of complications resulting from eating WB; 42.3% were aware of the complications of ingesting the seeds (constipation [37.9%], appendicitis/abdominal pain/vomiting [2.6% each] and bloated stomach/death [1.3% each]).

The findings suggested that eating banana seeds is associated to increase risk of digestive dysfunction.

Taking altogether, the edible part of banana, containing major active compound fructooligosaccharides (FOS) may be used as alternative treatment for patients with acute and chronic chronic without inducing side effects.

People who are at infrequent bowel movement may want to add a portion of banana into their diet for preventive measure

Some types of banana in the tropical world contain seeds. Please don't eat them, if you find one

Asparagus, The Miracle Anti Diabetes and Diabetes Complications Functional Food, Scientists Say

Kyle J. Norton, Master of Nutrition

Asparagus may have a potential and profound effect in reduced risk of diabetes in patients with no diabetes and diabetic complications in patients with diabetes, some studies suggested.

Diabetes is a condition characterized by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate the glucose.

The actual causes of diabetes are debatable. As researchers do not know why some people without genetic mutations are susceptible to disease development, while other do not.

Researchers believed that onset of diabetes type 2 is associated to a set of risk factors. According to the retrospective cohort study, using the data of 8337 adolescent respondents from Add Health (1994-2008) including 5131 non-Hispanic Whites, 1651 non-Hispanic Blacks, 1223 Hispanics, and 332 American Indians/Alaska Natives lead by College of Medicine, Washington State University,

* Pre-diabetes and diabetes were more prevalent in non-Hispanic Blacks (55% and 12%, respectively) than in American Indians/Alaska Natives (43% and 11%),

* Higher body mass index and family history of diabetes were associated with higher risk of pre-diabetes and diabetes.

* Female sex was associated with lower risk of pre-diabetes in compared to male counterpart.
Furthermore
* Physical inactivity, sedentary behaviors, or fast food consumption are associated to independent and preventive risk factors that induce early onset of prediabetes and diabetes.

Most people with prediabetes do not experience any symptoms. However, untreated diabetes or  diabetes that do not manage properly, may lead to serious complications of cardiovascular diseases, kidney damage, nerve, foot and eye damage, skin wound that can heal,....... and dementia such as Alzheimer's disease.

Asparagus is a flowering plant belongings to species the genus Asparagus, native to the western coasts of northern Spain, north to Ireland, Great Britain, and northwest Germany, northern Africa and western Asia.

The vegetable have been used from early times as a vegetable and medicine, because of its delicate flavor and diuretic properties.

In Streptozotocin (90 mg/kg) injected in 2-d-old Wistar rat pups to induce non-obese type 2 diabetes, researchers found that rats treated with a methanolic extract of A. officinalis seeds (250 and 500 mg/kg per d) expressed lowering fasting blood glucose, improved serum insulin, total antioxidant status and qualitative and quantitative in β-cell function(1) in compared to placebo group.

Additional observation also discovered that the methanolic extract also exerts a significant effect in reduced complications of kidney disease by inhibiting renal hypertrophy, polyuria, hyperfiltration, microalbuminuria and abnormal changes in the renal tissue(1).

Furthermore, asparagus extract enhanced production of antioxidants from the host in neutralize the unbalanced ratio of antioxidants and free radical in initiated oxidative stress(1) induced by injection of Streptozotocin (90 mg/kg) effectively.

Moreover, according to the study by Smt. Kashibai Navale College of Pharmacy, oral administration of ethanolic extract of Asparagus racemosus (EEAR) at a dose level of 100 and 250 mg/kg daily for 4 weeks, significantly reduced the expression of streptozotocin-induced early diabetic nephropathy in compared with control group(2).

Dr. Somania R, the lead researcher said, " A. racemosus treatment significantly decreased plasma glucose, creatinine, ..... total cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Renal hypertrophy,....and abnormal changes in the renal tissue".

These efficacy can be attributed to the extract's anti-diabetic effects by improving insulin secretion and β-cell function(2).

Interestingly, the 21 days continuous administration of aqueous extract of asparagus by-product (AEA) to examine the hypoglycaemic effect in a streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rat model indicated(3), found
* Rat treated with the extract showed to decrease fasting serum glucose and triglyceride levels but markedly increased body weight and hepatic glycogen level.

* In an oral glucose tolerance test, both the blood glucose level measured at 30, 60 and 120 min after glucose loading and the area under the glucose curve showed a significant decrease after AEA treatment.

* The extract also exhibited the hypoglycaemic and hypotriglyceridaemic effects in preventing diabetic complications associated with hyperglycaemia and hyperlipidaemia(3).

Taking altogether, there is no doubt that many aspects have contributed to the effectiveness of asparagus in reduced risk of diabetic complications and treatment of diabetes, but large amount of asparagus extract intake should only be prescribed by related field specialist.

However, further data collection on large example size and multi centers clinical studies and trials performed with human consumption of the whole food during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of asparagus anti diabetes possibilities.

Herbal Burdock, The Functional Herb Which Protects Skin Against Aging Caused by Reactive Oxidative Species (ROS)

Kyle J. Norton (Master of Nutrition, All right reserved)

Herbal Burdock may process a profound and positive effect in inhibited free radicals activity in induction of early onset of natural aging, some scientists suggested.

Burdock is plant in the group of biennial thistles, genus Arctium, belongings to the family Asteraceae, native to the Euro.

The herb has been used over thousand of years in China and other traditional herbal medicine as a diuretic, diaphoretic, and a blood purifying agent and to treat wounds and infections stomach ulcers and other digestive problems.

A free radical is any atom or molecule that has a single unpaired electron in an outer shell and highly reactive to react with other cell, which in turn, causes oxidative damage to the enzymes, other protein,.... unsaturated fatty acid.

Prolonged over expression of free radical were found to cause widespread damage through domino's  chain reaction auto-catalytically after attacking the lipid bilayers of the cell walls.

Truly, epidemiological studies strongly suggested that reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (ROS/RNS) existed as radicals or nonradicals, as well as reactive sulfur species and reactive carbon species, play a major role in aging processes.

Dr. Wölfle U, the lead scientist in the examine the effect of ROS in induction of skin aging said, " When RMS concentrations exceed a certain threshold, cell compartments and cells are injured and destroyed" and " Endogenous physiological mechanisms are able to neutralize RMS to some extent, thereby limiting damage. In the skin, however, pollutants and particularly UV irradiation are able to produce additional oxidants which overload the endogenous protection system and cause early aging, debilitation of immune functions, and skin cancer".

Some researchers suggested that unhealthy diet with low nutrition high in advanced glycation end products (AGEs) may also contribute to oxidation induced early aging process.

The Chemical Ingredients of Herbal Burdock include
Carbonated water, sugar, manloid colourings, phosphoric acid, citric acid and a good amount of dietary fiber, calcium, potassium, and amino acids and chemicals compounds of guaianolide, arctinone, arctinal, methyl arctate,11-tridecadien-3,5,7,9-tetraynde-hydrocostus lactone, dehydrodihydrocostus lactone, 3-octenoic acid, 3-hexenoic acid etc.

In the study of the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and the content of Malondialdehyde (MDA) and lipofuscin in the tissues of the liver, brain and blood serum of the lab rats at the 30 days after feeding with the Niubanggen decoction, researchers found that
* Levels of SOD in the liver tissue and blood serum were improved substantiallyin decoction treat rats

* Levels of the content of MDA in the brain tissue and blood serum were lower in compared to baseline.

* Levels of lipofuscin were also dropped significantly.

These results suggested that herbal burdock exerts strong anti-aging effects through activating antioxidant of the host in inhibited ROS in induction oxidative stress through expression of biomarkers of SOD and MDA and lipofuscin.

Herbal burdock antioxidant activity in the differentiation of 23 distinct herbal medicine was found to process anti-elastase activities up to 51% in prevention of destruction of elastic fiber.

Furthermore, in the review of the therapeutic effects of the active compounds presented in the different botanical parts of burdock, researchers at the The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, found that the root of burdock containing active ingredients "detoxify" blood in terms of TCM and promote blood circulation to the skin surface, improving the skin quality/texture and curing skin diseases like eczema.

However, burdock may induce contact dermatitis and other allergic/inflammatory responses, the University continued.

Taking altogether, function herb burdock processes bioactive ingredients which protect the skin against aging and disease through its antioxidants activity in inhibited over expression of free radicals.

White Button Mushroom, The Potential Ovarian Cancer Preventive Functional Food

White button mushroom may be next generation target of pharmaceutical extraction of single ingredient medicine for treatment of ovarian cancer , some scientists suggested.

Ovarian cancer is a chronic and medical condition characterized cell growth regularly and disorderly in the ovary. Normally, the alternated DNA healthy cancer cells start on the surface of the ovary. In the advance stage, the cancerous cell can travel a distance way from the originated site to infect other healthy tissue and organs.

Depending to where the healthy cells were infected, ovarian cancer can be classified as
* Epithelial ovarian tumor also known as surface epithelial-stromal tumor, as the name, it is a result of the cells on the surface of the ovary have become cancerous. Epithelial ovarian tumor is the most common form of ovarian cancer accounted for over 90% of ovarian cancer of all cases, including serous tumor, endometrioid tumor and mucinous cystadenocarcinoma.

* Germ cell ovarian tumor is a censer of the egg producing cells within the ovary and can be cancerous or non-cancerous tumors. It tends to occur in children and teens as a result of birth defects resulting from errors during development of the embryo.

* Sex cord stromal ovarian tumor is a cancer of the tissue of the ovary accounted for 8% of ovarian cancers. The excess estrogen produced by sex cord stromal ovarian tumor can lead to certain symptoms, such as adult granulosa cell tumours and thecomas, postmenopausal bleeding, menorrhagia, amenorrhea,.... and, endometrial hyperplasia.  The cancer tends to develop in older age group.

According to the statistic produced by the American Cancer Society, ovarian cancer is the fifth leading cancer which cause deaths among women. The cancer is found to account for more deaths than any other female reproductive cancer.

The average risk of a woman of getting ovarian cancer during her lifetime is about 1 in 78.

Ovarian cancer in early stage does not cause any symptoms, however, if you experience frequent and persistent symptoms of stomach and digestive issues, please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility. Ovarian cancer detected early is associated to significantly increased survival rate.

Mushroom is a standard name of white button mushroom, the fleshy, spore-bearing fruiting body of a fungus produced above ground on soil or on its food source, belongings to the family Amanitaceae

It has been cultivated in many cultures all over the world for foods and health benefits.

Chemical constituents
Astraodorol, Psilocybin, Lectin, adustin, ribonuclease, nicotine, 2-hydroxy-4-methoxy-6-methylbenzoic acid, orsellinic acid, melleolide, ergosterol, genistein, daidzein, daucosterol, genistin, uracil and D-mannitol(a).

In a hospital-based case-control study undertaken in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, from 2006 to 2008. including 500 patients diagnosed with epithelial ovarian cancer and 500 controls, with a mean (SD) age of 59 (6) years, after examining the returned questionnaire reported by participants researchers found that

* Patients with ovarian cancer consumed less mushrooms (mean [SD], 28.48 [37.45] g/d) in compared to controls (mean [SD], 30.75 [41.85] g/d).

* high levels intake of the common white button mushroom are associated to reduced risk of ovairan cancer by 68%.

* Risk of ovarian cancer is educed substantially for women who consume more than 2 g per day in compared to those who consume less.

* High levels of mushroom intake also decrease risk of others serous and mucinous subtypes of epithelial ovarian tumors.

These results provide strong evidences to suggest that intake of mushrooms, particularly white button mushroom in amount higher to 2 g per day, is inversely associated with the incidence of epithelial ovarian cancer in southern Chinese women.

Dr. Xu T in the differentiation of prevention and treatment of various type of mushroom cancer said, ".... the potential cancer preventive effects of edible mushrooms have been less well-studied. With similar content of putative effective anticancer compounds such as polysaccharides, proteoglycans, steroids, etc., one might predict that edible mushrooms would also demonstrate anticancer and cancer preventive activity".

However, some researchers in concerns of mushroom collected from wild, that their co-occurrence with some hazardous elements including Cd, Pb, Hg, Ag, As, and radionuclides may cause more harm than good.

The findings indicated that white button mushroom may be used as functional food for prevention and treatment of ovarian cancer. Please make sure that you know what you are doing, if you try to pick and consume wild mushroom.

In the study of 1358 asymptomatic adults diagnosed with chronic gastictis induced by bacteria Helicobacter pylori dividing into group with high-intake and group with low-intake of Japanese apricot (CJA), at the end of experience, researchers found that
* Among H. pylori-positive non-elderly subjects, antibody titers were significantly lower in the high-intake group (P=0.041).

* High apricot intake group demonstrated a significantly less H. pylori bacterial load and mononuclear infiltration irrespective of gastric site in compared to low intake group.

Finally, the Endoscopic tissue biopsy from participants also confirmed that high intake group shows less H. pylori bacterial load and mononuclear infiltration irrespective of gastric site.

Dr. Enomoto S, the lead author said, "Our findings strongly indicate a preventive effect of JA intake on CAG by inhibiting H. pylori infection and reducing active mucosal inflammation".

Furthermore, in the study to examine Helicobacter pylori (Hp) infection in induction of gastric disorders, including chronic active gastritis, peptic ulcers, intestinal metaplasia and cancer with Hp-inoculated gerbils given CJA in their drinking water at concentrations of 1 and 3% for 10 weeks, researchers at the Aichi Cancer Center Research Institute, showed that
* CJA intake groups exerts a lower score of gastritis and mucosal hyperplasia in compared to the Hp-inoculated control group.
* PH in the glandular stomach is lower in the dose of 1 and 3% CJA in compared to Hp-inoculated control groups.

These results indicated that CJA at doses of 1 and 3% has a strong effect in protect the stomach liing against over expression of stomach acid.

On the final report, Dr. Otsuka T, the lead scientist wrote, "These findings suggest that suppressive effects on gastric cancer development might also be expected as a result of decreased numbers of Hp and improvement of Hp-induced chronic active gastritis on administration of CJA.".

Taking altogether, Apricot fruit juice may be used as natural antibiotic functional food for treatment of chronic gastritis caused by Helicobacter pylori bacteria without inducing any side effects.

The Herbal Remedy Which is Better Than Medicine Fludrocortisone and Midodrine For Treatment of Orthostatic Hypotension (Postural Hypotension)

By Kyle J. Norton

Herbal butcher's broom (Ruscus aculeatus) may be considered as a replacement of medicine such as fludrocortisone and midodrine for treatment of orthostatic hypotension (OH), a recent study suggested.

Orthostatic hypotension (OH) is also known as postural hypotension, a condition happens when a person stands up from sitting or lying down or in sudden adjust of body position, the blood pressure falls, and a person may be experience lightheaded or sometime pass out.

What causes the blood pressure to fall when a person adjust positions suddenly from sitting position are debatable. Some researchers suggested that dehydration, blood loss, and anemia are the most common conditions for a person to develop low blood pressure.

Orthostatic hypotension (OH) may also be associated to long term intake of anti hypertensive medicine such as sildenafil.

Interestingly, people taking phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors for the treatment of erectile dysfunction (male impotence)may also experience orthostatic hypotension as well.

If you frequently experience symptoms of dizziness, weakness, blurred vision, and syncope or passing out when you adjust position from sitting. you may have orthostatic hypotension (OH).

Please make sure you check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.

Orthostatic hypotension (OH) mostly affects the groups of the aging population with autonomic insufficiency, such as diabetes, Parkinson's disease, and chronic fatigue syndrome; and anyone on drugs that affect the autonomic nervous system.

In conventional medicine, most cases of orthostatic hypotension (OH) are normally treated with fludrocortisone and midodrine.

Butcher's broom is a low evergreen shrub, a species of Ruscus aculeatus, belonging to the family Asparagaceae, native to Eurasia.

The herb  has been used in herbal medicine to treat reduce inflammation, peripheral vascular disease, hemorrhoids, bronchial asthma, varicose veins, hypotension, jaundice, functional disorders of the heart, kidney disorder, venotonic,..... and anti-edematous properties.

The Chemical Ingredients
It contains rutin, sitosterol, sparteine, spirostanol saponins, steroidal sapogenins, sterols, stigmasterol, sulfated steroidal saponins, sweet broom, tetracosanoic acid, triterpenes, triterpines, tyramine, etc.

In the study to find the natural ingredient which have therapeutic effect in replaced pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic agents for treating OH reveals with disappointing and marginal activity, researchers at the American University found that

* Ruscus aculeatus is an natural alpha-adrenergic agonist that induces venous constriction by directly activating function postjunctional alpha1- and alpha2-receptors in stimulating the release of noradrenaline at the level of the vascular wall to provide more blood to sympathetic nervous system.
These results may have a direct effect in reduced  risk of fall of the blood pressure.

Noradrenaline, a catecholamines plays major roles in regulation of function of the brain.

* Flavonoid, the major ingredient of ruscus aculeatus was also found to strengthens blood vessels, reduces capillary fragility, thus maintaining healthy circulation

* Most importantly, unlike most of the drug therapies used to treat OH, Ruscus aculeatus does not cause supine hypertension

The findings suggested that Ruscus aculeatus, a phytotherapeutic agent containing ruscogenins and flavonoids, may prove useful for the treatment of OH due to its potentially compromised receptor activity at the venous wall.

After taking into account of other con and cofounders, Dr. Redman DA at the final report said, "It also appears to do something no other therapy can offer--alleviate the worsening effects of OH in environmentally hot conditions. Finally, it is an extremely safe, inexpensive, over-the-counter botanical medicine" and "With proven phlebotherapeutic properties, including vasoconstrictive action and venotonic properties, Ruscus aculeatus shows great promise for ameliorating the symptoms of OH and improving the quality of life for large groups in the population. It clearly deserves to be the object of wider research and study as a treatment for OH".

Taking altogether, herbal Butcher's broom may be considered as functional herb for treatment of orthostatic hypotension (OH) with no adverse effect in compared ineffectiveness of conventional medicine,
