Herbal Therapy: Anise In Ameliorated Risk, Progression and Treatment of Oxidative Stress Related Chronic Diseases

Herbal Anise may have positive and potential effect in inhibited over expression of oxidative stress in initiated diseases expression, some scientists postulated.

Oxidative stress is a condition characterized by over expression of ROS in compared to low levels of antioxidants in the body.

Anise is a flowering plant ofthe species of Pimpinella anisum, genus Pimpinella, belongings to the family Apiaceae native to to Egypt and the Mediterranean region, used in traditional herbal medicine as fragrance in soaps, oils, and mouth fresheners and stomachic, anti-septic, anti-spasmodic, ....


Chemical comstituents
Anethole, D-pinene, I-phellandrene, Alpha-terpineol, Safrol, Methyl chavicol, Resin, Shikimic acid, etc.


In the study to evaluated Anise essential oil effect in metabolic disease favism, an acute hemolytic anemia caused by G6PD deficiency of a total of 48 male albino rats divided into six groups: group 1 orally administrated 1 mL distilled water, group 2 orally received 300 mg/kg anise oil, group 3 orally administrated 100 mg/kg anethole over a seven-day period, group 4 favism-induced rats, group 5 orally administrated 300 mg/kg anise oil and group 6 orally administrated 100 mg/kg anethole once a day over a seven-day period prior to favism induction, researchers found that groups treated with Anise anethole showed a significantly inhibited the reduced-levels of hemoglobin, hematocrit, red and white blood cell counts, serum glucose, blood glutathione, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, in compared to group 4 favism-induced rats.

Hemoglobin is the protein molecule in red blood cells that carries oxygen from the lungs to the body's tissues and returns carbon dioxide from the tissues back to the lungs and low levels of hemoglobin is a biomaker of anemia.

Hematocrit is a ratio of the volume of red blood cells to the total volume of blood. Low levels of hematocrit is an indication of anemia with destruction of red blood cells and risk of bleeding.

Blood glutathione is antioxidants produced by our body. Low levels of glutathione is associated to patient with chronic diseases caused by over expression of ROS.


 Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase chronic deficiency is associated to development of  favism.

Truly, by inhibited reduced levels of glutathione (GSH), a tripeptide with a free sulfhydryl group, Anise improved the antioxidant status through its antioxidant expressors and improved natural antioxidant in the tissue by increased glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase expression.

These results suggested that Anise exerted significant antioxidant activity in inhibited oxidative stress in induction of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency in facilated the development of favism.

Further analysis of the anti oxidative effect of different extracts and essential oil from Pimpinella anisum L. seeds in carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced toxic models including human liver cancer cell line HepG2 and male Sprague-Dawley rats, researchers found that application of the n-hexane extract found in Anise essential oil, effectively attenuated CCl4-induced toxicity through improved the expression of cell viability, cellular reduced and oxidized glutathione and lipid peroxidation in HepG2 cells.

The final assessment suggested that although Anise exerted strong anti ROS production, some extracts and essential oil do not have a profound effect in reduced oxidative stress expression by initiated antioxidant production of both in the herb and the host.

Dr. Jamshidzadeh A, after taking into account of futher analysis, the lead author said, "As the oxidative stress markers were ameliorated, it might be concluded that anise seed possesses protective effects probably due to its antioxidant constituents".

The above differentiation were supported by the study conducted by Dr. Conforti F and colleagues in the assessment of chemical profile of Anise.

According to the results, Anise extract containing most abundant major components of monoterpenes trans-anethole (54.5%), limonene (13.5%), and sabinene (4.4%) displayed a significant antioxidant activity (50% inhibitory concentration [IC(50)], 3.02 mg/mL) observed by the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl assay.

Moreover, the administration of the extract also inhibited over production of nitric oxide (NO)  in precipitated oxidative stress in induction of cardiac and pulmonary dysfunction.

Finally, researchers postulated that Anise extract with abundant petrochemicals have a significant anti oxidative stress effect through its antioxidant and antioxidants produced by the host body without inducing  toxicity to nearby healthy cells.

Taken together, Anise may be considered as a functional herb in ameliorated risk, progression and treatment of oxidative stress in induction of chronic diseases such as atherosclerosis, cancer, diabetics, rheumatoid arthritis,....

Herbal Therapy: Fennel In Reduced Symptoms and Treatment of Estrogenic Deficiency Related Diseases

In the evaluation of the fennel estrogenic effect in inhibited the increased ectopic uterine motility in facilitated symptoms including pain in primary dysmenorrhea, researchers found that in compared to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in induction of severe adverse effects used for treatment in long-term therapy, application of fennel essential oil (FEO) of LD(50, 1326 mg/kg) in rat model, exerted a therapeutic effect in reduced expression of prostaglandin E(2) (PGE(2)) in induced muscle contraction.

Further analysis suggested that fennel essential oil reduced the intensity of oxytocin and PGE(2) induced uterine muscle contractions significantly (25 and 50 microg/ml for oxytocin and 10 and 20 microg/ml PGE(2), respectively without inducing mortality in tested subjects.

Abnormal production of prostaglandins E2 was found to associate to the intensity of symptoms of primary  dysmenorrhea, including vomiting, fever, diarrhea, and excessive uterine contraction.

According to the P. G. Institute of Basic Medical Sciences, acetone extract isolated from Foeniculum vulgare Mill., seeds at different dose levels (50/ug, 150/ug and 250/ug/100gm body wt.) exerted a potential and positive estrogenic activity in increased nucleic acids and protein concentration and organ weights, particularly in the medium and high doses.

The above differentiation were supported by the study of "Effect of Foeniculum vulgare Mill. seed extract on the genital organs of male and female rats" conducted by Dr. Malini T and colleagues.


According to the results, fennel extrogenic effect in oral administration of acetone extract of Foeniculum vulgare (fennel) seeds for 15 days in male rats, exerted a  significant malformation of the male reproductive tract including decreased in testes through inhibited Leydig cell production of testosterone and disrupted fluid reabsorption in the efferent ductules via the ERα and vas deferens in transported sperm from the testicle to the urethra.

Moreover, application of the extract also demonstrated an increased volume of seminal vesicles and prostate gland and decreased activities of acid and alkaline phosphatase in all these regions, including bones, intestines, pancreas, and kidneys.

In female rats, ingestion of acetone extract for 10 days showed a strong effect in expression of estrogenic effect through the observation by vaginal cornification, the test of appearance of cornified epithelial cells in a vaginal smear for confirmation of  the presence of high levels of estrogen.

The application also catalyzed the  the imbalanced production of sex hormone of female estrus cycle.

At moderate doses the seeds caused increase in weight of mammary glands by over expression of estrogen circulation in precipitated a negative effect in regulated systemic mammogenic factors (prolactin, growth hormone), and directed influence of the mammary tissue, such as stromal components and epithelial cells.

At higher doses fennel seeds increased the weight of oviduct, endometrium, myometrium, cervix and vagina.

Taken together, fennel may be considered as a function food for reduced symptoms of estrogen deficiency syndrome and combined with the standard medicine for treatment of estrogenic related diseases.

The Magic of Camellia Sinensis Leaves: Green Tea In Ameliorated Risk, Progression and Treatment of Pulmonary Fibrosis

Green tea may have a therapeutic and positive effect in reduced risk and progression and treatment of pulmonary fibrosis, some scientists suggested.

Pulmonary fibrosis (PF) is a chronic and progressive condition of lung disease characterized by reduced numbers and increased stiffness of air sac in the lungs (alveoli), affecting the lung breathing function to provide enough oxygen into the bloodstream

Green tea, is a precious drink processed numbers of health benefit known to almost everyone in Asia and Western world.

In the evaluation of green tea extract efficacy in pulmonary fibrosis caused by direct injury due to over expression of oxygen free radicals and inflammatory cells and fibroblasts in mice model with injection of Paraquat (0.3 mg/kg) into the right lungs of rats, after 2 weeks, then assigned the tested mice to group treated by green tea extract or non treatment groups and control group treated by saline, after assessment,  researchers found that
* Non treatment group exerted a significant expression of pulmonary fibrosis, observed by contents of light microscopic morphometry and hydroxyproline caused by over capacity of ROS observed by the lipid perioxidation assay.

Further examination also discovered that non treatment mice group displayed a pronoucely increased
levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), an indication of over expression of free radicals in induction of oxidative stress caused by ROS chain reaction and endothelin (ET)-1, and prepro-ET-1 mRNA expression, a strong indication of the endothelium signals of vasoconstriction and local cellular growth and survival of air sac cells in the lungs (alveoli).

*In compared to non treatment and saline groups, green tea administered 1% GTE mixed with feed group showed significant decreases in pulmonary fibrosis, along with decreases in MDA, ET-1, and prepro-ET-1 mRNA expression

The result suggested that green tea inhibitorily oxidative activity in reduced expression of pulmonary fibrosis through its antioxidants and promoted production of antioxidants from the host to restore the ratio of antioxidant and free radicals and decreased the facilitation of proinflammatory cytokines in precipitated damage and apoptosis of lung cells and fibroblasts. 

Dr. Kim HR, thelead author, after taking into account of other con founders said, "GTE inhibits paraquat-induced pulmonary fibrosis by suppression of oxidative stress and ET-1 expression".

Additional study of the neutrophils in the site of infection in initiation of host defense and inflammation in precipitation of pulmonary fibrosis development by the Medical School of Padova, revealed that application of green tea (-)epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) strongly inhibits neutrophil elastase by repressing the reactive oxygen species activity in induction of apoptosis of activated neutrophils.

In vitro, administration of EGCG dramatically inhibited chemokine expression, a secondary pro-inflammatory mediators induced by primary pro-inflammatory in activated neutrophil chemotaxis in migration of neutrophils of immune system to  the site of infection.

Importantly, injection of green tea EGCG also demonstrated a significant effect by blocking neutrophil-mediated angiogenesis in vivo  by initiated growth of new blood vessels to stimulate and fuel the ongoing lung cell damage and death of the cell in the alveoli.

These results constituted a substantial and protective effect in enhanced resolution in a pulmonary inflammation model and significantly reduced consequent fibrosis.

Dr. Donà M, at the end of the analysis said, "These results provide molecular and cellular insights into the claimed beneficial properties of green tea and indicate that EGCG is a potent anti-inflammatory compound with therapeutic potential".

The above differentiation of green tea effect in protect the lung against the development of pulmonary fibrosis caused by free radical chain reaction and over production of pro inflammatory factors were supported by the study of "the protective effect of green tea extract (GTE), curcumin, against N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) on experimentally induced pulmonary fibrosis" by Cairo University.

According to the study, application of curcumin (200 mg/kg b.w), GTE (150 mg/kg b.w), and NAC (490 mg/kg b.w) orally for 14 days with concomitant administration of cyclophosphamide (CP),  revealed a strong activity in inhibited oxidative stress and lung myelo-peroxidase activity observed in animals of the CP group.

Treatment group also decreased the levels of N-acetyl-β-d-glucosaminidase, leukotriene C₄, and protein in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) in demonstration of over reaction of immune response in induction of inflammation through inhibited production of proinflammatory cytokines (growth factor-β, interleukin -1β, and histamine) in initiated lung injure and induced apoptosis of lung cells.

Taken together, green tea and its bioactive polyphenols may be considered as a function food for treatment of pulmonary fibrosis through reducing oxidative stress and inflammatory effect in elevated risk and progression of the disease.

Herbal Therapy: Herbal Anise in Reduced Risk of Infectious Diseases Through its Antiviral Activities

Essential oil Anise may have a potential and substantial effect in reduced risk and progression and treatment of viral infectious diseases, some scientists suggested.

Anise is a flowering plant ofthe species of Pimpinella anisum, genus Pimpinella, belongings to the family Apiaceae native to to Egypt and the Mediterranean region, used in traditional herbal medicine as fragrance in soaps, oils, and mouth fresheners and stomachic, anti-septic, anti-spasmodic, ....

In the investigation of the effects of several essential oils, including Anise in against expression of herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) in vitro on RC-37 cells, using a plaque reduction assay, researchers found that application of essential oil of concentrations (IC50) at doses of 0.016%, 0.0075%, 0.007%, 0.004%, 0.003% and 0.0015% demonstrated significant effects linearly in ameliorately persistent infection spreading of sexually transmitted disease of the virus.

At maximum dose, essential oil of Ansie without inducing cytotoxicity to healthy cells, exerted an inhibitory effect against different stages during the viral infectious cycle and plaque formation by more than 90%.

Interestingly, all essential oils displayed no inhibitory effect cells prior to infection with HSV-2 or after the adsorption period.

These results suggested that injection of Ansis essential oil can only affect HSV-2 after penetrating into  the viral envelope.

In compared to the inhibitory effects of all essential oil, Anise exhibited a less selectivity activity in compared to essential oil isolated from chamomile.

Further demonstration of Anise anti viral activity, using 3 antiviral and immunostimulating substances (LC1, LC2 and LC3) isolated from a hot water extract of seeds of Pimpinella anisum by combination of anion-exchange, gel filtration and hydrophobic interaction column chromatographies researchers at the University of Toyama suggested that the lignin and carbohydrate molecules(CLs) bonded physically or chemically with each other of LC1, LC2 and LC3 exerted a significantly antiviral activities in reduced expression of herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2 (HSV-1 and -2), human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) and measles virus.

Moreover, application of all LCs substances inhibited the virus induced-adsorption to the host cell surface by direct inactivating the viruses penetration through enhanced nitric oxide (NO) production by inducing iNOS mRNA and protein expression in RAW 264.7 murine macrophage cells in response to viral attacks.

These result of rival inhibitory effect of Anise LCs substances not only prevented virus in alternated the healthy cells DNA in initiated infectious cell proliferation but also inhibited production of interleukin 1 beta (IL-1β) and interleukin 10 caused by over reaction of immune response in elevated expression of pro inflammatory cytokines in induction of healthy cell damage and cell apoptosis.


The above differentiation were supported by the study in the evaluated the effect of limonene, the major bioactive compound found in Fennel and Ansie in inhibited risk and progression and treatment  of dengue, a potentially fatal mosquito-borne infection of 50 million cases per year with 2.5 billion people who are vulnerable to the disease.

According to the results, application of essential oil using WHO procedures, displayed a substantial effect against third instar larvae of Ae. aegypti for 24 h.

More specifically, the result of inhibition of over 99% of tested virus were attributed to major constituent (-)-limonene at lethal concentrations LC50, C90 and LC99.

Taken together, Anise and its major bioactive monoterpenes may be considered as a possessed potency as functional food ingredients against infectious diseases cause by viral invasion.

Alternative Therapy: Yoga in Reduced Psychological Symptoms and Improved Quality of Life in Schizophrenia

Yoga lessons may be used as conjunction of other standard treatment in reduced symptoms and hospitalization and improved quality of life, in patients with schizophrenia, the University of Duisburg-Essen suggested.

Schizophrenia is a mental disorder induced inconsistent or contradictory elements such as breakdown of certain relation in thought, emotion, and behavior, leading to faulty perception, inappropriate actions and feelings,....

Yoga, the ancient technique practice for harmonized external and internal body well beings, through breath control, meditation, bodily movement and gesture..... has been best known for people in Western world and some parts in Asia due to health benefits reported by various respectable institutes' research and supported by health advocates.

In the review literature published online MEDLINE/Pubmed, Scopus, the Cochrane Library, PsycInfo, and IndMED through August 2012 in comparing yoga to usual care or non-pharmacological interventions related to symptoms or quality of life in patients with schizophrenia, 5 studies met the criteria indicated that
* There were no evidence was found in compared to usual care on positive symptoms and improved social function in short term valuation
* Yoga group expressed a moderate evidence in short-term effects on quality of life compared to usual care 3. Only one study showed insignificantly adverse events.

The findings suggested that yoga intervention may have a moderated effect in reduced symptoms and other aspects of patients with schizophrenia without mentioning the effects in long term yoga participation.

Truly, yoga slow breathing and meditation induced calmness to the central nervous system in reduced production of stress hormone such as adrenaline and cortisol, and the precursor hormone DHEA in exaggerated stress responses in initiated mental health expression of anxiety and depression.
Fluctuation of hormone imbalance can cause mixed of symptoms.

In the finding the natural sources for answer of the question of produced enough milk in women who face challenges in their efforts to breast-feed their infants, researchers at the CANADIAN JOURNAL OF MIDWIFERY RESEARCH AND PRACTICE conducted a study of  a total of 23 women at one to four months postpartum to share their experiences with childbirth and postpartum self-care, suggested that out of 23 women interviewed, 4 women reported insufficient milk supply and 11 women showed an improvement of lactation by using galactagogue substances, including herbal medicine fennel.

According to the survey returned from these participants, four women used fennel seed or oil, and all considered herbal product were effective as galactagogue. One learned about it from a friend, two from their midwives, and one from her mother who used it herself while breast-feeding.

These results suggested that herbal medicine including fennel may process a significant benefit in increased milk production but Dr. Rachel Emma Westfall, PhD suggested that further investigation are necessary to validated this viability.

Although, the mechanism in enhanced lactation effects of fennel seeds acting as galactagogues are little known, some scientists postulated that the result of fennel in increased milk secretion was attributed to the phytochemical anethole in expression of estrogenic property.

Anethole, the main constituent of the essential oils of fennel and anise, has been considered as an active estrogenic agent by actual pharmacologically active investigation.

Truly, according to the Cochrane Pregnancy and Childbirth Group, in the evaluation of the fennel effect in increased milk production breast feeding mothers suggested that anethole, the major bioactive compound isolated from fennel is considered weakly estrogenic agent and may increase breast milk production or assist with the ‘let-down’ reflex, through enhanced function of hormone oxytocin.

These results suggested that fennel as a galactagogues may improve milk production by working, either directly or indirectly, on the hormonal pathways that control lactation.

In other words, application of fennel restored the function of hormone pralactin in induction of milk formation and hormone oxytocin produced by the pituitary gland with function to contract special muscle cells around the alveoli in the breast to ensure the expulsion of milk.

To ensure these process continued without interuption, application of fennel seed also rebalance the hormone secretion by preventing over production of estrogen and progesterone in reduced expression of hormone prolactin in inhibited milk production. according to the results in animal models.

By blocking serum of estrogen and progesterone in blood circulation, fennel seed ensured that the pituitary gland continuously releases of prolactin in stimulated mammary gland cells in secretion of milk.

Some researchers suggested, the function of fennel in facilitated milk formation and secretion may also be as a result of increasing numbers of milk-secreting cells during the lactation state caused by sucking of the young by enhancing the growth of mammary alveolar growth, prolactin, or both. 

Today, even with extensive researchers, there is little known about the mechanisms of fennel seeds in enhanced production of milk during lactation period. Some researchers concerned that over doses of fennel seeds may cause potential adverse effects since dosages for galactagogues are mostly unquestioned and untested.

Taken together, fennel seeds may have a potential effect as galactogenic herbal medicine in increased milk formation and production. However, further study with a large sample size conducted by multi centers are necessary to re-confirm its viability scientifically.

Herbal Therapy: Green Tea, the Camellia Sinensis Leaves In Spelled Death of Tuberculosis in Third World Countries

Green tea may have a therapeutic and positive effect in reduced risk and progression and treatment of tuberculosis (TB), some scientists suggested.

Tuberculosis (TB) is a disease caused by bacteria called Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Commonly, the bacteria attacked the lung tissue but also can cause major damage to other parts of the body.

Green tea, is a precious drink processed numbers of health benefit and known to almost everyone in Asia and Western world.

According to statistic, 25% of the world's population is infected with TB. In 2016, 10.4 million people around the world became sick with the disease induced 1.7 million deaths.

In the investigation of the effect of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in risk of tuberculosis of a total of 200 newly diagnosed cases of AFB positive pulmonary tuberculosis, with 100 patients randomly received catechin (500 microg) with antitubercular treatment (ATT) (cases) and the other 100 received starch (500 microg) with ATT (control), researchers at the Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Medical University found that CTN treatment group exerted a significant activity in reduced levels of free radical expression through reduced oxidative stress in compared to control, observed by analysis of the blood samples.

Further analysis suggested that green tea CTN treatment group restored the balanced of antioxidant and free radicals ratio by stimulated production of levels of enzymatic antioxidant (catalase, superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase) and non enzymatic antioxidant (total thiol, reduced glutathione) levels and significant decreased expression of free radicals (lipid peroxidation, nitric oxide).
These results re-constituted the efficacy of crude catechin extract as adjuvant therapy in management of oxidative stress seen in pulmonary tuberculosis patients.

Moreover, in monitor the extent of oxidative stress in mice infected with M tuberculosis and the role of crude green tea extract in repairing the oxidative damage by divided them into three groups of  normal, infected-untreated and infected-treated with 9 members in each group, scientists indicated that infectous untreated group exerted a significant enhancement of antioxidants produced by the natural defense of the body such as  erythrocytic catalase and glutathione peroxidase activities along with elevated levels of free radical defenders such as erythrocytic total thiols but decreased levels of antioxidant activity of superoxide dismutase and  glutathione in erythrocytes and increased levels of free radicals plasma lipid peroxidation as compared to normal animals as expected.

These results suggested that non CTN tested mice exerted the protection against application of infectious agent selectively either through expression of natural antioxidant produced by the body or  antioxidants produced by the body were inhibited by the injection substance.

Importantly, ingestion of green tea CTN upon 7 days in infectious mice group completely restored the normal values of antioxidants and ROS ratio observed by the oxidative stress parameters.

In other words, green tea treatment group showed an increased catalase, glutathione peroxidase, total thiol and decreased extent of lipid peroxidation with concomitant increase in the levels of SOD and glutathione in infected animals, thus reducing development of tuberculosis risk.


The above differentiation were supported by the Department of Experimental Medicine and Biotechnology, Chandigarh in the study to determine whether or not polyphenols derived from green tea could down-regulate TACO gene transcription in reduced uptake/survival of M. tuberculosis within macrophages.


According to the The reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction and reporter assay technology, application of major component of green tea polyphenols, epigallocatechin-3-gallate EGCG reduced expression of TACO gene transcription within human macrophages through its ability in inhibited Sp1 transcription factor in blocking the mycobacterial entry/survival within human macrophages in initiation of infectious cellular processes, including cell differentiation, cell growth, immune responses.

Dr. Anand PK, the lead authors, said, "The down-regulation of TACO gene expression by epigallocatechin-3-gallate was accompanied by inhibition of mycobacterium survival within macrophages as assessed through flow cytometry and colony counts" and "epigallocatechin-3-gallate may be of importance in the prevention of tuberculosisinfection".

Taken together, green tea and its bioactive polyphenols in attenuated risk and treatment of tuberculosis caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis may contribute significantly to the prevention and treatment of tuberculosis in third world countries where the conventional medicine are scarce or un-affordable to general population.
