Hemagglutinating lectin, a main component isolated from several varieties of kidney bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) may induce toxicity, affecting abnormal development of microvilli of tiny hairlike folds in the plasma membrane of the small intestine, a respectable institute study suggested.

In South Africa, dried red kidney beans are prohibited for cultivation or consumption because of the potential toxicity to humans. However, the toxicity levels of hemagglutinating lectins activity in uncooked and incompletely cooked kidney bean is not higher in compared to the other bean varieties sold in the regions.

Researchers, in the compared toxicity of uncooked red kidney bean and other dried bean found that toxic potentials and health risks associated with red kidney beans are similar to those of other dry beans already commercially available to South Africans. Therefore, red kidney should have a commercial preference as of other beans.

Kidney bean is popular food, with  kidney shape, strong flavor and color in reddish brown in nature, used often as an excellent dietary selection because of its enormous health benefits with a good source of protein and minerals.

According to the recent advanced study, intake of raw kidney bean may cause lectin-induced disruption of intestinal in interference with the intermediate and final stages of nutrient break down in the gut.

Dr.Pusztai A, the lead author said, "In nitrogen balance studies it was found that rats ingesting pure bean lectins were in negative nitrogen balance" and "These nitrogen losses may have been partly the result of systemic effects, possibly caused by a selective uptake of lectins by the gut".

The poorly digested chemical compound actually disrupted borders cells and intestinal absorptive cells of duodenum.

Taking together, regardless to levels of toxicity of bean varieties, epidemiological studies agreed that consumption of fully cooked kidney bean provides many nutrients with numerous health benefits. but kidney beans should not be eaten as raw.

Furthermore in the application of 0.1 g of crude biomass obtained from seed coats of Perla black bean dissolved in 400 mL of H2 O, and 100 g of NaCl added in liver injure mice model, back bean treatment group expressed evidence of improvement of pathological changes, including interstitial fibrosis, inflammatory infiltration, collagen deposition and steatosis in compared to normal group.

Histological analysis showed that the test group presented a significant reduction of collagen deposition of which exhibited a reduced risk of developed liver scaring in the recover phase.

The study also insisted that antioxidant effect against liver intoxication, a widely use laboratory application in induced lipid peroxidation and trichloromethyl radical (CCl3 ), to cause severe liver cell damage in animal model, may represent a new perspective in liver injury and fibrosis prevention, the researcher concluded.

Taking together, black bean, contains various phytochemicals, such as naringenin, Nacetylcysteine, vitamin E, sylimarin, quercetin in exhibited antioxidant activity, may be considered as a integrated form of diet therapy for reduced risk and treatment of liver fibrosis.

Colon cancer is a condition of the abnormal proliferation of cells in the colon.

According to the Hannam University Daedeok Valley Campus, Korean kidney bean husk extract, ameliorated risk of colon cancer through the ability in control the messenger initiated chemical reactions of intracellular signaling responsible for inducing antitumor activities in colon cancer cells.

Further more, in the evaluated composition and chemopreventive effect of a polysaccharide extract (PE) from cooked common beans ( P. vulgaris L), including kidney bean, in Negro 8025 with azoxymethane (AOM) induced colon cancer, rats group fed with polysaccharide extract (PE) showed a significantly decreased clusters of abnormal tissues in the lining of the colon and rectum.

The study also insisted, the anti colon cancer activity can also be attributed to cell apoptostic expression and action of butyrate concentration found in the beans.

In support to the above differentiation, the Querétaro State University study concluded that the efficacy of common bean in treatment of colon cancer is a result of chemoprevention against aberrant crypt foci, clusters of abnormal tube-like glands in the lining of the colon and rectum through a combination of cell-cycle arrest in phase I and II.

Additionally, the study also suggested that through modulation of gene expression profiles in the colon tissue, non-digestible fraction (NDF) of cooked bean (cultivar Bayo Madero) may contribute to the chemoprotective effect on early-stage colon cancer.

Taking together, intake of kidney bean regularly may have a potential effect in reduced risk and treatment of early stage of colon cancer.

Food Therapy: Black Bean In Reduced Risk of CVD and Diabetes in Metabolic Syndrome Adults

Intake of black bean and other common bean may associate to ameliorated risk of metabolic syndrome induced type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, a joint study of renowned institutes suggested.

Metabolic Syndrome is a group of risk factors associated with the development of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes.
Black bean, a small roughly ovoid legume with glossy black shells, genus Phaseolus, belongings to the family Fabaceae can be bought in most grocery stores all around the year in dried and canned forms. It is believed that black bean was first domesticated growth in South America.

In a pilot study consisted 12 men and women with metabolic syndrome randomly assigned to eat three standard meals in a crossover design on three different occasions that contained either no added fiber (control (NF)), extrinsic or added fiber (AF), or whole black beans as the source of intrinsic fiber (BN). 5 hours after meal intake, black bean injection group showed a remarkable improvement of blood glucose, insulin, cholecystokinin (CCK) and the GI hormones in compared to other groups.

Unfortunately, even with such results, black bean meal was not the meal of choice of tested adult in compared to NF meal which tended to result in more satisfaction.

Dr. Reverri EJ, the lead author said, "incorporating whole blackbeans into a meal has acute beneficial metabolic and GI hormone responses in adults with metabolic syndrome and are preferred over adding equivalent amounts of fiber from a supplement."

Other, in the study of 12 adults with metabolic syndrome (MetS) consumed one of three meals (black bean (BB), fiber matched (FM), and antioxidant capacity matched (AM)) on three occasions with included blood collection before (fasting) and five hours postprandially, black beam intake group showed an improvement of insulin resistance, antioxidant capacity, oxLDL and inhibited pro inflammatory expression against risk factor of metabolic syndrome in increased risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

The study also suggested black bean group according to observed plasma antioxidant capacity may be less at beginning in compared to AM group, but at the end point, BB group showed a significant antioxidant levels in compared to other 2 groups.

The finding evidences suggested that black bean may be considered as a therapeutic functional food in reduced risk of metabolic syndrome which is an early indicator of onset of diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Coffee, second to green tea is popular and social beverage all over the world, particular in the West, made from roast bean from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.

1. decrease lipid accumulation in cells via the regulation of the cell cycle in fat tissue

3. In compared to other treated group, GCBE treated mice displayed a lower fat mass and relative body weight and decreased fat mass.

More importantly, in the review of papers from in vivo, ex vivo, in vitro experimental studies in animals and human tissues as well as wide population-based epidemiological studies in the last 10 years, researchers at the joint study lead by the South University School of Pharmacy said, " there are mounting evidences of the reduced risk of developing type 2 diabetes by regular coffee drinkers of 3-4 cups a day. The effects are likely due to the presence of chlorogenic acids and caffeine, the two constituents of coffee in higher concentration after the roasting process".

Taking altogether, there is no doubt that coffee and coffee caffeine have a significant and potential effect in reduced risk and management of obesity, through various active biochemicals in dose deepening manner.

Furthermore, the study in the evaluation of the potential effect of andrographolide against three acute promyelocytic leukaemia cell line models (HL-60, NB4 and all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA)-resistant NB4-R2,  andrographolide was 2- and 3-fold more active in inhibiting the growth of HL-60 and NB4-R2 cells compared with NB4 cells, through cell differentiating activity via a retinoic acid receptor-independent pathway.

In fact, according to Dr. Manikam SD, the lead researcher, andrographolide and its derivatives, apparently demonstrated a novel cell differentiating mechanism with ability to induce apoptosis.

There is no doubt that Andrographis with a novel mechanism of drug action may be a new candidated therapy for reduced risk and treatment of Leukemia, but large amount intake should be taken with care.
