Kidney bean, one of the functional food and its supplement may have a profound effect on weight loss to benefit people of overweight and obese, the recent study suggested.

Kidney bean is popular because of its kidney shape, strong flavor and color that is reddish brown in nature, genus Phaseolus, belonging to the family Fabaceae. The bean is often an excellent dietary selection with no cholesterol, but a good source of protein and minerals.

According to the Medicus Research LLC, Food with a low glycemic index such as kidney bean  consisted the ability to cause weight loss with doses of 500 to 3000 mg per day, in either a single dose or in divided doses in oral administration.

Dr. Barrett ML, the lead author said, "Experiments conducted incorporating Phase 2 into food(including kidney bean) and beverage products have found that it can be integrated into various products without losing activity or altering the appearance, texture or taste of the food" and " ...has the potential to induce weight loss and reduce spikes in blood sugar caused by carbohydrates through its alpha-amylase inhibiting activity".

Other studies showed that extracts of kidney beans (Phaseolus vulgaris)suppress appetite to induce weight loss in animal and human. The efficacy of the extract induced weight loss of obese subjects may be depended to doses intake without promoting toxicity.

The efficacy of weight loss effects is attributed to function of kidney beans in inhibition of protein enzymes in breaking down the bond in long starch or glycogen molecules, interfering hormone in regulation of release stored bile into the intestine and the central mechanism(s) in regulating appetite, food intake, and food palatability.

In animal study, standardized extracts of P. vulgaris and C. scolymus and their combination, expressed a significant control of appetite, food intake, and postprandial glycemia.

With all information collected, one can believe that Kidney Bean and Kidney Bean supplement may represent a successful example of translational research in the nutraceutical field for production of commercial benefit weight loss products.

Food Therapy: Black Bean In Reduced Risk of CVD and Diabetes in Metabolic Syndrome Adults

By Kyle J. Norton

People who turn to alternative medicine for treatment of disease in avoidance of adverse effects induced by conventional medicine should be patient. In compared to herbal medicine; food therapy even takes longer to ease symptoms, depending to stages of the treatment which directly address to the cause of disease.

Intake of black bean and other common bean may associate to ameliorated risk of metabolic syndrome induced type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, a joint study of renowned institutes suggested.

Metabolic Syndrome is a group of risk factors associated with the development of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes.
Black bean, a small roughly ovoid legume with glossy black shells, genus Phaseolus, belongings to the family Fabaceae can be bought in most grocery stores all around the year in dried and canned forms. It is believed that black bean was first domesticated growth in South America.

In a pilot study consisted 12 men and women with metabolic syndrome randomly assigned to eat three standard meals in a crossover design on three different occasions that contained either no added fiber (control (NF)), extrinsic or added fiber (AF), or whole black beans as the source of intrinsic fiber (BN). 5 hours after meal intake, black bean injection group showed a remarkable improvement of blood glucose, insulin, cholecystokinin (CCK) and the GI hormones in compared to other groups.

Unfortunately, even with such results, black bean meal was not the meal of choice of tested adult in compared to NF meal which tended to result in more satisfaction.

Dr. Reverri EJ, the lead author said, "incorporating whole blackbeans into a meal has acute beneficial metabolic and GI hormone responses in adults with metabolic syndrome and are preferred over adding equivalent amounts of fiber from a supplement."

Other, in the study of 12 adults with metabolic syndrome (MetS) consumed one of three meals (black bean (BB), fiber matched (FM), and antioxidant capacity matched (AM)) on three occasions with included blood collection before (fasting) and five hours postprandially, black beam intake group showed an improvement of insulin resistance, antioxidant capacity, oxLDL and inhibited pro inflammatory expression against risk factor of metabolic syndrome in increased risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

The study also suggested black bean group according to observed plasma antioxidant capacity may be less at beginning in compared to AM group, but at the end point, BB group showed a significant antioxidant levels in compared to other 2 groups.

The finding evidences suggested that black bean may be considered as a therapeutic functional food in reduced risk of metabolic syndrome which is an early indicator of onset of diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Food Therapy: Coffee and Coffee Caffeine In Reduced Risk and Management of Obesity

By Kyle J. Norton

In compared to herbal medicine, food therapy even takes longer to ease symptoms, depending to stages of the treatment which directly address to the cause of disease.

Coffee, second to green tea is popular and social beverage all over the world, particular in the West, made from roast bean from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.

Obesity is a medical condition of excess body fat accumulated overtime. According to the Body Mass Index(BMI),  a BMI of over 30 is an indication of obesity.

Good news for coffee lovers, bioactive components found in coffee may have a potential effect in reduced risk and management of obesity, a renowned institute study opinionated.

According to the joint study lead by the National Taiwan University, the efficacy of coffee in reduced risk and management of obesity over last 10 years of research, may be attributed to
1. decrease lipid accumulation in cells via the regulation of the cell cycle in fat tissue
2. improved fat metabolic formation in both protein and transcription factors expression
According to animal studies.

In human, it is the result from decreased body weight and visceral fat stored within the abdominal cavity.

Further more, the study also expressed the important of coffee intake in influence the gut microbiota in obese animals and humans.

Additionally, in the evaluation of possible lipid catabolism and body fat regulation effects of 3-caffeoylquinic acid in Green coffee bean extract (GCBE) in high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obese mice fed with only HFD or HFD with GCBE at 50, 100, and 200 mg/kg, respectively, researchers filed the following results
1. GCBE treated group showed a significantly decreased body weight gain, liver and white adipose tissue weights, but importantly intake of coffee also regulated adipose tissue lipolysis hormones in breaking down fat accumulation.
2. The efficacy of treatment group in reduced obesity risk may also benefit to the decreased mRNA expression levels of adipogenesis and adipocyte metabolism in both gene and protein expression.
3. In compared to other treated group, GCBE treated mice displayed a lower fat mass and relative body weight and decreased fat mass.

More importantly, in the review of papers from in vivo, ex vivo, in vitro experimental studies in animals and human tissues as well as wide population-based epidemiological studies in the last 10 years, researchers at the joint study lead by the South University School of Pharmacy said, " there are mounting evidences of the reduced risk of developing type 2 diabetes by regular coffee drinkers of 3-4 cups a day. The effects are likely due to the presence of chlorogenic acids and caffeine, the two constituents of coffee in higher concentration after the roasting process".

Taking altogether, there is no doubt that coffee and coffee caffeine have a significant and potential effect in reduced risk and management of obesity, through various active biochemicals in dose deepening manner.

Herbal plants have formed a fundamental source for conventional medicine in discovery of single ingredient medication, including aspirin (from willow bark), quinine (from cinchona bark), and morphine (from the opium poppy)......

Andrographis paniculata is also known as Andrographis is a herbaceous plant, genus Andrographis, belonging to the family Acanthaceae, native to India and Sri Lanka. It has been used in traditional Siddha and Ayurvedic in treating the common cold, flu, upper respiratory infections, infectious diseases, diarrhea, dysentery, cholera, pneumonia,....

A renowned institute study suggested that andrographolide, a major compound isolated from andrographis may consist a potentially therapeutic effects in reduced risk and controlling the progression of leukemia.

Leukemia is condition of abnormal increase of white blood cells produced by the bone marrow and/or the lymphatic system. Depending to the malignant granulocytes or lymphocytes, leukemia is classified into myelogenous or lymphoblastic leukemia.

According to the joint study lead by the Jining No 1 People's Hospital, andrographolide (Andro) showed to possess antitumor activities against T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL) through induced cytotoxicity in tumor and cell apoptosis.

10 μg/mL Andro could significantly induce tumor cells' death, depending on the inhibition of PI3K/AKT pathway in regulating the cell cycle and increased expression of cancer cell apoptosis.

Flavonoid, chemical compounds isolated from the aerial parts of Andrographis paniculata also exhibited antiproliferative effects against human leukaemia HL-60 cells with with IC50 of 3.50 μM.

Furthermore, the study in the evaluation of the potential effect of andrographolide against three acute promyelocytic leukaemia cell line models (HL-60, NB4 and all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA)-resistant NB4-R2,  andrographolide was 2- and 3-fold more active in inhibiting the growth of HL-60 and NB4-R2 cells compared with NB4 cells, through cell differentiating activity via a retinoic acid receptor-independent pathway.

In fact, according to Dr. Manikam SD, the lead researcher, andrographolide and its derivatives, apparently demonstrated a novel cell differentiating mechanism with ability to induce apoptosis.

There is no doubt that Andrographis with a novel mechanism of drug action may be a new candidated therapy for reduced risk and treatment of Leukemia, but large amount intake should be taken with care.

Food Therapy: Coffee and Coffee caffeine A Potent Depressive Beverage?

By Kyle J. Norton

In compared to herbal medicine, food therapy is one the best medicines to ease symptoms slowly, depending to stages of the treatment which directly address to the cause of disease, without inducing adverse effects

Epidemiological studies do not agreed that coffee and coffee caffeine have a positive effect in reduced depression, a review literature study suggested.

Coffee, second to green tea, is a popular and social beverage all over the world, particular in the West, made from roast bean from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.

Depression is a normally neuro response as part of our daily lives such as the loss of s job, the death of a love one, and illness.
Over 30 million Americans suffer from depression and the amounts are increasing in an alarming rate.

According to the University of Naples Federico II, over 2 decades, many studies addressed the concerns of coffee intake may have a implication of incidence of depression, but several phytochemical studies indicated a different outcome as caffeine and certain major phyto constituents exhibited antidepressant effects through multiple molecular mechanisms.

Dr. Tenore GC, the lead researcher said, "coffee can be considered a drink which has different positive effects on human health such as cardioprotective, neuroprotective, hepatoprotective, nephroprotective, etc. However, heavy coffee consumption may be related to some unpleasant symptoms, mainly anxiety, headache, increased blood pressure, nausea, and restlessness".

Contrastively, caffeine in coffee showed a strongly inverse association in cases of postpartum depression and comorbid panic disorder.

Other researchers in the searching of the efficacy of coffee and risk of depression through data base from PubMed and PsychINFO insisted that although literature data are conflicting, caffeine found in coffee indicated a significant reduced effect on symptoms of clinical depression.

Additionally, in a cross-sectional study in 10,177 Korean individuals aged 20-97 years with prevalence of self-reported depression of 14.0% and that of self-reported clinical depression of 3.7%. participated in the fifth Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. to determine the effect of consumption of coffee and risk of depression, after adjusting to other factors, returned survey from patients, can be cataloged into the followings
For general depression
1. The relative odd ratio of patients drinking less than one cup/week was 0.84
2. The relative odd ratio of patients drinking one to six cups/week was 0.63
3. The relative odd ratio of patients drinking for one cup/day was 0.69
4. The relative odd ratio of patients drinking for two cups/day was 0.54
5. The relative odd ratio of patients drinking for three or more cups/day was .58

For clinical depression, similar observations also have been recorded
1. The relative odd ratio of patients drinking less than one cup/week was 1.00
2. The relative odd ratio of patients drinking one to six cups/week was 0.51
3. The relative odd ratio of patients drinking for one cup/day was 0.57
4. The relative odd ratio of patients drinking for two cups/day was 0.57
5. The relative odd ratio of patients drinking for three or more cups/day was 0.41

The findings although is not linearly, coffee and coffee caffeine intake expressed a protective effect in ameliorated risk of depression.

Taking together, there is no doubt that coffee and coffee caffeine intake daily and regularly have a profound effect in depression but further cohost large sample sized studies are necessary to find out other factors may contribute to either outcomes.

Food Therapy: Coffee and Coffee Caffeine in Reduced Risk of Breast Cancer Selectively

By Kyle J. Norton

In compared to herbal medicine, food therapy even takes longer to ease symptoms, depending to stages of the treatment which directly address to the cause of disease.

Recent studies suggested that coffee and coffee caffeine may have a potentially effect in reduced risk and treatment of breast cancer, selectively.

Coffee, becoming a popular and social beverage all over the world, particular in the West, is a drink made from roast bean from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.

In the review of literature from database of PubMed with selection of 37 published articles, involving 59,018 breast cancer cases and 966,263 participants, suggested that
1. There are no significant association of coffee and coffee caffeine intake and breast cancer risk
2. Post menopause women drinking coffee daily and regularly have a reduced risk of breast cancer developing.
3. Women who are BRCA1 mutation carriers showed a positive risk of breast cancer from coffee intake

The study also indicated that for additional cup of coffee consumed risk of breast caner decrease by 2% and 1% for every 200mg/day increment in caffeine intake.

Contrastively, in a case-control analysis on 1,690 women with a BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation from 40 centers in 4 countries.to determine coffee and coffee caffeine intake against the risk of breast cancer, returned self-administered questionnaire. showed a significant correlation of coffee intake in the elevated breast caner risk.

Women with breast cancer in BRCA carriers who habitually drank 0, 1-3, 4-5 and 6 or more cups of coffee showed a relative risk odd ratio of 1.00, 0.90, 0.75 and 0.31, respectively.

The finding evidences of relative odd ratio of suggested that risk of breast cancer was reduced in this group of women linearly to numbers of coffee and coffee caffeine consumed daily.

Dr, Jiang W, lead author said, " (According to the findings) women with BRCA gene mutation, coffee consumption is unlikely to be harmful and that high levels of consumption may in fact be related to reduced breast cancer risk"

Interesting, in the investigated the common A to C polymorphism in the CYP1A2 gene associated with decreased enzyme inducibility and impaired caffeine metabolism of caffeine to examine the risk of breast caner in BRCA1 mutation carriers of 411 BRCA1 mutation carriers (170 cases and 241 controls) researchers at the University of Toronto found that risk of breast cancer decrease significantly by 64% in BRCA1 mutation carriers with at least one C polymorphism in the CYP1A2 gene but not in CYP1A2 AA group in compared to women who never consumed coffee.

Collectively, coffee and coffee caffeine may only benefit to certain ages and genes expression but harmful to the others. Further cohost studies are necessary to clarify these controversies..

The use of plants for healing purposes has been predated long before the existence of  modern medicine. Herbal plants has formed a fundamental source for conventional medicine in discovery of single ingredient medication, including aspirin (from willow bark), quinine (from cinchona bark), and morphine (from the opium poppy)......

A study conducted by a respectable institution suggested that Chaste Tree Berry exhibited anticonvulsant activity in patients with seizures.

Chaste tree berry is a species of Vitex agnus-castus, genus Vitex, belonging to the family Lamiaceae, native to the Mediterranean region, used in herbal medicine for thousands of year as anaphrodisiac herb and considered as Queen herb in treating menstrual problems and discomforts.

In a study using animal model of maximal electroshock seizures (MES) and induced seizures (MES) by administrated pentylenetetarazole (PTZ), intake of ethanolic leaf extract of Vitex-negundo, at doses of 250, 500 and 1000 mg/kg p.o, exerted a significant of postictal depression, an altered state of consciousness after an epileptic seizure in the dose of 1000 mg/kg body weight in comparison to control but no effects in other applications.

At doses of (1000 mg/kg, po), the ethanolic leaf extract exhibited a 50% half life protection in chronic seizures after 24-hour injection against PTZ induced seizures. Researchers also found that the efficacy of the extract at that doses is the result of valporic acid, a major ingredient found in Chaste tree berry.

Dr. Tandon VR and co author Dr. Gupta RK. of the study said, " The anticonvulsant activity of Vitex-negundo has not been found equi-effective with standard drugs".

Further more, because of the potentiation of diphenylhydantoin and valporic acid isolated Vitex-negundo displayed a significant effect in treating animal model, the extract may be used as an adjuvant therapy along with standard anticonvulsants.

Additionally, according to the Baqiyatallah University of Medical Sciences, hydrophilic extract of Vitex agnus castus fruit (Vitex) administered doses (60, 120 or 180 mg/kg) showed a strong anti convulsant activity even at low dose (60 mg/kg) of Vitex by increasing the after discharge(AD) threshold and decrease the after discharge duration ( ADD) and and stage 5 duration (S5D).

Promisingly, at the highest does, the extract inhibited significantly seizure stage (P<0.01) and reduced or prevented epileptic activity as demonstrated by reduction of ADD and S5D (length of convulsion) in a dose dependent manner.

More importantly, methanolic extract (ME) of the leaves of V. negundo salso showed to process the  analgesic properties and potentiated analgesia demonstrated by morphine and pethidine in protection against strychnine and leptazole induced convulsions.

Taking together, Chaste Tree Berry may be one of next generation therapeutic herbal medicine consisted a strong effect for prevention and treatment of seizure as a result of abundant phytochemicals, but intake of large amount should taken with care to reduce risk of toxicity.
