#Yoga Exercises Improve Physical and Psychological Functioning and Quality of Life in Post-Stroke Patients, Clinical Trials Suggest

Kyle J. Norton

Post-stoke patients may benefit from reduced pain, improved range of motion (ROM), strength, and endurance with therapeutic yoga, a recently renowned institute suggested.

Stroke rehabilitation is a program with the aim to regain some physical and psychological function after a stroke, causing the death of some cells in the brain.

Today, yoga, the ancient practice has become a very popular form of exercise in the Western world and some parts of Asia due to health benefits reported by various respectable institutes' research and supported by health advocates.

According to the Colorado State University, the significant improvement in physical functioning such as hip passive, upper extremity strength range of motion in post-stroke patients participated in the 6-min walk after 8 weeks of engaging in yoga.

Dr. the lead author said, " therapeutic-yoga intervention may improve multiple aspects of physical functioning after stroke. Such an intervention may be complementary to traditional rehabilitation"

Besides improved physical functioning, yoga is also shown a significant effect in promoting psychological health and quality of life.

In the review literature of major biomedical and complementary medicine databases, researchers at the Harvard Medical School found that 5 randomized controlled clinical trials and 4 single case studies identified the positive results of improvements in cognition, mood, and balance and reductions in stress in post-stroke patients.

Furthermore, in support of the above differentiation, a prospective, randomized, pilot study of yoga-based rehabilitation for people with chronic stroke with yoga therapy showed a remarkable result in regaining some forms of balance, balance self-efficacy, reduced fear of falling (FoF), and improved quality of life.

Taking together, there is no doubt that therapeutic-yoga intervention may improve multiple aspects of physical and psychological functioning as well as regained quality of life in after-stroke patients and may be used as complementary to conventional rehabilitation.
