#RegularWalking Inhibits Various Markers of Inflammation Associated with the Risk of #RheumatoidArthritis

Regular physical activity has long been found to associate with the prevention of cancer, cardiovascular disease, and other chronic diseases, but regular walking contribution of health benefits to reduced symptoms and risk of early onset of Rheumatoid Arthritis in the younger and older elderly have been controversial.

Rheumatoid Arthritis is a chronic disorder as a result of inflammation, mainly affecting the flexible (synovial) joints and tissues and organs in the body. The disease affects more women than men and generally occurs after the age of 40 and diminishes the quality of life of many elders, leading to slowing joint damage progression(4).
In Europe, the disease has social consequences in constituted limitations in performing roles relating to working life and family and social life(3).

According to the School of Physiotherapy, University of Otago, Walking is a low-cost and low-impact activity, requiring little supervision and regular walking improved the Quality of Life in managing pain symptoms for people with Rheumatoid Arthritis, such as pain(1), depending on walking route shape and the length of the walk(1).

On physical activity among patients with early RA, Dr. Silva CR and the research team in the investigation of the Consensus of the Brazilian Society of (SBR) for the treatment of Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) suggested, walking is one of the most often practiced exercises (80.64%) recommended(2).

Dr. Lusa AL and colleagues at Columbia University, said, "Psychosocial factors and body composition are potentially reversible contributors to walking speed in RA. Relative to articular disease activity and damage, nonarticular indicators were collectively more potent indicators of an individual's mobility limitations"(5).

In fact, regular walking also reduces the risk of early onset of Rheumatoid Arthritis through long-term anti-inflammatory effects but a single bout of walking does not lead to a change in various markers of inflammation or lymphocyte adherence to cultured endothelial cells. (6).


Nordic walking, in the study of overweight and obese postmenopausal women, not only reduced inflammatory states but also led to favorable hormonal responses, as well as improvement in muscle integrity and nutritional benefits(7).

Dr. Dopheide JF and the research team at the University Medical Center of the Johannes Gutenberg-University Mainz said, "A reduced inflammatory state might be achieved by regular walking exercise, possibly in a dimension proportionately to changes in walking distance"(8).
