#Honey Shows to Control Obesity by Regulating Lipid Metabolism in Vivo, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Obesity is a chronic condition characterized by extreme overweight. In other words, obesity is the condition of excess body fat accumulated that cause a negative effect on obese health.
In the US, obesity is an epidemic, as over 68% of the general population are either overweight or obese, leading to a medical and economic burden to the country with a substantial risen in health care costs and absentees.

Epidemiological studies strongly suggested that obese people have been found to complicate serious diseases, such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and cancer.

According to the BMI calculation, if you have a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or more, you are obese. However, the index sometimes can be misleading due to its limitation in distinguishing between excess fat, muscle, or bone mass.

The cause of obesity is calories dependent. Eating more calories than your body can burn over a long period of time can lead to obesity.

However, some researchers suggested having a sedentary or inactive lifestyle not sleeping enough, a poor diet with a higher amount of saturated band trans fat, red meat, processed foods, and fewer amount of fruits and vegetables aging are a number of potential risks factors that cause the onset of obesity.

In other words, if you follow the Western diet with a lack of exercise, your risk of obesity is many times higher than people who follow the traditional diet with moderate exercise.

Dr. wrote, "In the past two decades, the relation between dietary patterns and overweight/obesity has been a research focus, and a number of results were reported in the research field".

And, "A prudent/healthy dietary pattern and limit intake of the Western/unhealthy dietary pattern should be followed, which helps to keep a healthy body mass".

Honey, the rich golden liquid is a miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

Liquid is considered one of the healthy food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.

In the urgency to find a natural whole food for the treatment of obesity, researchers examined the potential of honey consumption in controlling weight gain, including Gelam and Acacia honey from Malaysia.

According to the results from the experiment of Male Sprague-Dawley rats induced obesity by a high-fat diet (HFD) prior to introduction with/without honey or orlistat for four weeks, Gelam honey significantly reduce excess weight gain and adiposity index compared to the high-fat diet group.

Additionally, the hallmarks of obese levels of plasma glucose, triglycerides, and cholesterol, plasma leptin and resistin, liver enzymes, renal function test, and relative organ weight caused by the injection of a high-fat diet were reduced significantly by Gelam and Acacia honey.

Although orlistat exerted a similar effect comparable to those of honey, it induced hepatotoxicity.

Dr. Samat S, the lead scientist said, "Consumption of honey can be used to control obesity by regulating lipid metabolism and appears to be more effective than orlistat".

Furthermore, according to the investigation of the antiobesity benefits of stingless bee honey (SBH) from H. itama in 48 male Sprague Dawley (SD) induced obesity by a high-fat diet, 3 dosages of SBH showed a higher reduction in body mass index (BMI), percentage of body weight gain, adiposity index, and relative organ weight (ROW) compared to typical obesity treatment methods.

Moreover, the levels of liver enzymes (ALT, AST, and ALP), triglycerides, and LDL-cholesterol were significantly lower and the level of HDL-cholesterol was significantly higher in SBH-treated groups compared to the control obese group.

From the morphological structure perspective, SBH also decreased the number of adipocyte cells and protected the hepatocytes in the liver against rupturing.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "...the administration of SBH led to an improvement in indicators associated with obesity reduction. SBH also possesses a hepatoprotective potential which can reduce the health risks related to obesity".

Taken altogether, honey, particularly stingless bee honey (SBH) and Gelam and Acacia honey may be considered functional remedies for the treatment of obesity and prevention of obese health complications with no side effects, pending the confirmation of a large sample size and multicenter human study.
