Gastrointestinal diseases are conditions of the digestive system associated with disorders involving the gastrointestinal tract, including the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, and rectum.
The digestive system includes the gastrointestinal tract (GI), liver, pancreas, and gallbladder with a healthy function of breaking down food into nutrients and fluids for the body's needs.

There are many different types of gastrointestinal diseases, including irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Crohn's disease, celiac disease, and lactose intolerance.

The most common causes of gastrointestinal diseases are bacterial or viral infection, inflammation, poor circulation of the intestines, muscle dysfunction, gallstones, stress, and particularly long-term use of anti-inflammatory drugs. However, gut microbiota, a community of microorganisms living in the gastrointestinal tract has been found to induce a significant effect on digestive health if imbalanced, including
* Reducing the function of gut microbiota to absorb the dietary nutrients of the digestive system, in nutrient metabolism,

* Reducing the function of gut microbiota in the inhibition of xenobiotics and drug toxicity by facilitating the excretion, in xenobiotic, and drug metabolism,

* Reducing the structural integrity of the gut mucosal barrier, leading to weakened epithelial cells' function to protect the intestine against invasive pathogens.

* Reducing the gut microbiota interaction with the immune system against inflammatory immune disorders and inhibiting the risk of gastrointestinal diseases and non-gastrointestinal diseases caused by overexpression of bad bacteria, in immunomodulation.

Conventional medicine used for the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders is depending on the disease that triggers the disorder. such as antibiotics for bacterial infection, and painkillers for stomach pain.

Cabbage is a species of Brassica oleracea belongings to the family Brassicaceae (or Cruciferae), native to the Mediterranean region along the seacoast. The veggie has a short stem that is crowded with a mass of leaves, usually green but in some varieties, it may be red or purplish.

On finding a natural compound for the improvement of digestive function in the absorption of nutrients, researchers examined the effects of co-digestion of a carotenoid-rich vegetable such as carrot, cherry tomato, or baby spinach with an anthocyanin-rich vegetable such as red cabbage
intestinal cellular bioaccessibility (cBAC).

According to the analysis of the chemical constituents, the tested vegetables processed the concentration of % cBAC of lutein was 0.23-1.42%, lycopene 0.07-0.39%, α-carotene 0.01-0.12% and β-carotene 0.03-0.61% respectively.

Furthermore, the co-digestion of the vegetables/salads resulted in synergy in cellular antioxidant activity compared to those without salad.

Moreover, cellular anti-inflammatory activity was also a significant increase in vegetable co-digestion compared to single vegetables alone.

Additionally, among the tested vegetables, baby spinach co-digested with red cabbage showed synergistic bioactivities in all tested assays.

In other words, the co-administration of vegetables work synergistically to provide higher improvement of digestive function compared to single vegetable through their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity.

Taken altogether, red cabbage may be considered a functional food for the promotion of digestive health, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric as a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
