Phytochemical Beta-Sitosterol Inhibits the Risk and Treatment of Colon Cancer in Vitro and Vivo

By Kyle J. Norton

The colon-formed parts of the secretory system are also known as the large bowel or large intestine with a function to reabsorb fluids and process and secret waste products from the body.

Cancer is a class of chronic diseases caused by cell growth disorderly and irregularly in the tissue of a specific organ as a result of the alternation of DNA.

Colon cancer is a chronic condition caused by cell growth irregularly and disorderly in the colon due to the alternation of DNA.

Colon cancer is one most slow-growing cancer compared to other cancers. In some patients, colon cancer may exist in the colon more than 20 years before it is discovered. Therefore, only 39% of colon cancer is diagnosed in the early stage, which orchestrates more incidences of death compared to other cancers.

Most cases of colon cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the colon. At this stage, patients may not experience any symptoms.

After penetrating deeper into the colon layer, the cancer cells may travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissue and organs through the fluids and blood circulation.

At this stage, the increased size of the tumor may suppress the nearby tissue, organs, or nerve cells causing localized symptoms and severe pain.

According to the statistic provided by the American Cancer Society, in 2019, approximately, 101,420 new cases of colon cancer will be diagnosed. Colon cancer also causes the death of 51,020 deaths. during 2019.

The lifetime risk associated with the onset of colorectal cancer is 1 in 22 (4.49%) for men and 1 in 24 (4.15%) for women.

The median age diagnosed with colon cancer is 68 in men and 72 in women compared to the age of 63 for rectal cancer in both men and women.

Beta-Sitosterol is a phytochemical in the class of Phytosterols, belonging to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in avocados, rice bran, wheat germ, corn oils, fennel, peanuts, soybeans, hawthorn, basil, buckwheat. etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of malignant tumors, researchers examined the protective effect of beta-sitosterol isolated from A. curassavica against colon cancer in Vitro and Vivo.

The study included male Wistar rats injected with 1,2-dimethylhydrazine (DMH, 20 mg/kg b.w.) and supplemented with beta-sitosterol throughout the experimental period of 16 weeks at 5, 10, and 20 mg/kg b.w.

According to the tested analysis, beta-sitosterol induced significant growth inhibition of COLO 320 in a dose-dependent manner.

Beta-sitosterol supplementation also reduced the number of aberrant crypt and crypt multiplicity in DMH-initiated rats in a dose-dependent manner without inducing toxicity.

Additionally, the application of 10-20 mg/kg b.w. of beta-sitosterol not only is effective in vivo but also induced chemopreventive potential by inhibiting the expression of free radicals in vitro, with minimal toxicity to normal cells.

Based on the findings, researchers said, " It (Beta-sitosterol) also attenuated beta-catenin and PCNA expression, making it a potential anticancer drug for colon carcinogenesis".

Taken altogether, beta-Sitosterol may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of colon cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of beta-Sitosterol in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
