Japanese Angelica Exerts a Strong Neuro-Protective Activity

By Kyle J. Norton

Neuroprotection is a process to preserve the neuronal structure and/or function against the death or gradual death of neurons, including the use of medicines and herbs.

In other words, neuroprotection protects the neuronal integrity against the rate of neuronal loss over time, inducing neurological disease, including neurodegenerative disease.

Brain ischemia is a condition caused by insufficient blood flow to the brain to meet metabolic demand, leading to irreversible brain damage in severe cases.

In other words, brain ischemia-induced the death of neurons of the affected tissues.

A neuron or nerve cell made of a cell body (also called soma), dendrites and an axon, is a cell in the nervous system that carries electrical impulses.

Neurons are core components of the brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves that play an essential role to process and transmit information.

The function of neurons can be classified into 3 types
* The sensory neurons found within the nervous system that convert external stimuli from the organism's environment into internal electrical impulses. In other words, sensory neurons are activated by sensory input from the environment, including physical input of sound, touch, heat, or light.

*The motor neurons transmit impulses from the spinal cord to skeletal and smooth muscles,. In other words, motor neurons directly control all of the muscle movements.

* The interneurons connect the motor and sensory neurons. In other words, the interneurons transfer signals between sensory and motor neurons.

Angelica shikokiana (Apiaceae) is a Japanese traditional herb that is widely marketed as a dietary food supplement as a health tea preparation consumed as a daily beverage for health benefits.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the prevention and treatment of neurological diseases researchers examined the neuroprotective activities of compounds from Angelica shikokiana Makino.

According to the chemical analysis,
* Quercetin showed a strong neuroprotective effect the strongest AChE (IC50 value = 35.5 µM) through binding to active-site peptides and activation of Tyr-70 residues at the catalytic and anionic sites of acetylcholine esterase, respectively.

* Furthermore, chemical compounds chlorogenic acid, angelica methyl ester, quercetin, and luteolin demonstrated a significantly protect neuro-2A cells against free radical H2O2-induced neurotoxicity by the scavenge hydroxyl radical and intracellular reactive oxygen species.

* Moreover, Kaempferol-3-O-rutinoiside, hyuganin E and isoepoxypteryxin found in the herbal medicine also significantly decreased Aβ25-35-induced neurotoxicity and Th-T fluorescence.

Taken altogether, Angelica shikokiana Makino processed abundantly bioactive compounds may be considered a supplement for neuroprotection, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of beta-Sitosterol in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Cooking Influences Cruciferous Vegetables's Antioxidants Capacities

By Kyle J. Norton

Antioxidants are stable atom that plays a critical role in protecting the body against the attack of free radicals.

In other words, antioxidants inhibited the onset of free radical before they can cause a chain reaction in facilitating the protein, lipid and cell damage.

Antioxidants can either produced by the liver or intake from dietary sources. Under normal conditions, antioxidant enzymes produced by the body in a healthy individual are good enough to counter the bombardment of free radical attacks.

However, in people with a weakened immune system, intake dietary sources of antioxidants may be necessary.

On the other hand, free radicals are highly reactive molecules with an unpaired electron on the outer ring of the atom.

Due to its nature to become stable, free radicals readily to donate or steal an electron from other molecules, leading to the chain of domino's effect that can not be stopped until either the electrons are paired or inhibited by antioxidants.

This chain of reaction is the cause of oxidative stress, a condition is associated with either overexpression of free radicals or depletion of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host organs.

Oxidative stress is a condition caused by an imbalance of the ratio of free radicals and antioxidants in the body.

Some researchers suggested that oxidative stress may also arise due to the chain reaction of free radicals in which free radicals donate or intercept an electron from other stable molecules.

Cruciferous vegetables are a group of vegetables, belongings to the family Brassicaceae (also called Cruciferae) with many genera, species, and cultivated all over the world in suitable climate for commercial profits, including cauliflower, cabbage, kale, garden cress, bok choy, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and green leafy vegetables.

On finding a natural antioxidant whole food, researchers examined the antioxidant activities of some Brassica vegetables.

According to the dietary information,
* The antioxidants in cruciferous vegetables were found to be influenced by antioxidant breakdown and leaching during cooking, particularly in heat cooking.

* Brassica vegetables, including cruciferous vegetables, perceived minor antioxidant ability in processed vegetables compared to uncooked samples.

* Food processing operations in terms of blanching, canning, sterilizing and freezing have a strong effect on the antioxidant capacity.

In other words, cooking methods perhaps can have a major influence on the yield, chemical structure, and bioavailability of antioxidants in the Brassica family.

More precisely, the consumption of raw or slightly blanched veggies is an appropriate way to maximize its health benefits.

Broccoli Inhibits the Onset of Colon Cancer Cells in Vivo

By Kyle J. Norton

The colon is also known as the large intestine.
Colon cancer is relatively very common and slowly growing and progressing cancer.

Most cases of primary colon cancer start in the cell on the surface of the inner lining of the colon. At the early stage. most patients with colon cancer do not experience any symptoms.

However, at the advanced stage, the tumor not only can spread to other healthy tissue and organs a distance away through blood and fluid circulation but also suppress the nearby tissue and nerve cells.

The progression of colon cancer at this stage not only induces symptoms of the change in bowel habits, the change in the consistency of your stool, that lasts longer than four weeks but also causes rectal bleeding and persistent abdominal severe pain.

Researchers do not know the exact causes of the disease. But they do know a history of polyps, ethnicity, high-fat diet and low fiber, the increase in age, the long-term infection of colon diseases are some of the prevalent risk factors associated with the onset and progression of colon cancer, according to epidemiological studies.

According to the statistic provided by the American Cancer Society, colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed in the United States. Every year approximately, 90000 new cases of colon cancer. 43,000 new cases of rectal cancer are diagnosed, leading to the death of 50,000 patients.

The lifetime risk of developing colorectal cancer is about 1 in 22 (4.49%) for men and 1 in 24 (4.15%) for women.

The 5-year survival rate for patients diagnosed with localized stage colorectal cancer is 90%. About 39% of patients are diagnosed at this early stage.

Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belong to the family Brassicaceae. The veggie has large flower heads, usually green in color and the mass of flower heads surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant on the continent of Europe.

On finding a potential plant that processes anticarcinogenic activity, researchers examined the effects of diets containing plant materials of the Brassica vegetables broccoli and pak choi enriched by adding glucosinolates (GSLs).

In a model of inflammation-triggered colon carcinogenesis (AOM/DSS model), selected mice were fed by different amounts (GSL-poor versus GSL-rich) and different patterns (broccoli versus pak choi) of GSLs, researchers found that up-take and bioactivation of GSLs were found after feeding the Brassica diets for four weeks.

High glucoraphanin content with broccoli diets also induced the formation of sulforaphane-lysine and 1-methoxyindolyl-3-methyl-histidine adducts.

Furthermore, In the colon, the GSL-rich broccoli and the GSL-rich pak choi diet up-regulated the expression of different sets of typical Nrf2 target genes associated with the production of antioxidant enzymes but did not affect Ugt1a1 that is responsible for the glucuronidation of bilirubin, allowing for its excretion.

However, in the colon, the GSL-rich broccoli diet showed no effects in both colitis and tumor number compared to the GSL-rich pak choi diet which was drastically reduced.

Moreover, GSLs can act anti-inflammatory and anti-carcinogenic but both effects depend on the specific amount and pattern of GSLs within a vegetable.

Based on the results of the trial, researchers said, "a high Brassica consumption cannot be generally considered to be cancer-preventive".

Taken altogether, broccoli enriched by adding glucosinolates (GSLs) may be considered a remedy for the prevention of colon cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Omega -3 Fatty Acids Reduces the Risk of Type 2 Diabetes in Overweight or Obese

By Kyle J. Norton

Diabetes is a chronic and medical condition characterized by the inability of the body to use insulin to convert glucose in the bloodstream to energy.

Type 2 diabetes or acquired diabetes is a medical condition characterized by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate glucose due to either cell in the pancreas dying off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol.

Researchers do not know what causes the pancreas dying off or receptor sites clogged up. However, they do know obesity or overweight, gender, ethnicity, age, family history, gestation diabetes, are associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes.

Some researchers also suggested that people with certain medical conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome. and high blood pressure is more prone to the onset of the disease.

The most common symptoms of type 2 diabetes are increased thirst that won't stop with water intake, increased hunger (especially after eating), dry mouth, frequent urination, and unintentional weight loss.

According to statistics, diabetes is one of the most common diseases in the US. Approximately 10% or 29.1 million people in the United States have diabetes, accompanied by 8.1 million that are undiagnosed and unaware of their condition.

About 1.4 million new cases of diabetes are diagnosed in the United States every year. More than one in every 10 adults who are 20 years or older has diabetes.

Diabetic complications are any diseases associated with hyperglycemia if the blood glucose is not managed properly. Patients with diabetes may induce a number of complications including cardiovascular disease, neuropathy, nephropathy, retinopathy, and foot ulcer.

Overweight, blood pressure and cholesterol are some of the conditions associated with increased risk of diabetes complications.

By managing your blood glucose properly and daily, the risk of diabetic complications can be reduced in diabetics by taking your medication as directed, keeping tight control of your blood sugar or managing the blood glucose in the required range, eating healthy with moderate exercise to protect your weight, blood pressure, and cholesterol, get regular checkups and quit smoking

If you are following the aforementioned suggestion, you may do just fine in the prevention of diabetes complications.

Omega-3 fatty acids are phytochemicals in the class of lipids, found abundantly in deepsea fisk, dark-green leafy vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, etc.

The three main components of Omega-3 fatty acids are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of chronic diseases, researchers examined the Long-chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCn-3PUFA) status on patients with type 2 diabetes in the Hunter Community Study.

The study included men and women aged 55-85 years (n = 2092, diabetes: n = 249) who had plasma phospholipid fatty acid composition data available and diabetes status randomly selected from the electoral roll and invited to participate.

According to the tested analysis, after adjusting for confounders of diabetes,
* LCn-3PUFA status was inversely associated with diabetes in overweight/obese females (OR [95%CI]: 0.90 [0.80, 1.00], p = 0.045) but not males (p-interactionsex = 0.041).

* Furthermore, overweight/obese females with diabetes had significantly lower levels of DHA than those without diabetes (mean difference [95%CI]: -0.53 [-0.87, -0.20], p = 0.002), with no difference in EPA.

In other words, low levels of DHA are associated with patients with diabetes regardless of weigh.

* More importantly, LCn-3PUFA was inversely associated with Homeostatic model assessment-Insulin Resistance  (HOMA-IR) (r = -0.175, p = 0.005).

Based on the evidence, researchers said, "This study provides further evidence of a sex-dependent association between LCn-3PUFA and types 2 diabetes. Causal pathways between LCn-3PUFA and type 2 diabetes merits delineation".

Taken altogether, Omega-3 fatty acids processed abundantly LCn-3PUFA  may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of type 2 diabetes, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Angelica Suppresses the Growth of Malignant Brain Tumors in Vitro and Vivo

By Kyle J. Norton

The central nervous system is a part of the nervous system of the brain and spinal cord with the function of integrates information it receives from for the entire nervous system, and control all the workings of your body.

The central nervous system (CNS) controls most functions of the body and mind, consisting of two parts: the brain and the spinal cord.

In other words, the brain plays a critical role in the central nervous system associated with our thoughts, the interpreter of our external environment, and the origin of control over body movement

Brain and Spinal Cord tumors originated are not very common.

Brain cancer is a medical and chronic condition characterized by cell growth disorderly in the brain tissue.

Benign tumors are noncancerous, and malignant tumors are cancerous. More than 190.000 people in the US are diagnosed with a brain tumor each year alone.

Most brain types of brain cancer in the older adult ages 50 to 60 are Chordomas. The cancer is a rare and slow-growing, but it can invade adjacent bone and put pressure on the nearby neural tissue.

Meningiomas, the most common type of benign brain tumor of the age group 40-50s. However, a small percentage of these tumors can be malignant.

According to the statistic provided by the Canadian cancer society, Every day about 25 Canadians is diagnosed with a brain tumor.

The 5-year survival rate of brain cancer is only 25%, compared to over 60% for cancers overall. Most adults with a diagnosis of aggressive glioblastoma survive only 1–2 years after their diagnosis.

Some researchers suggested genetic preposition and acquired gene mutation due to long-term exposure to chemical toxins may be the prevalent risk factor that causes the alternation of brain cell DNA.

Most common symptoms of brain cancer depending on the stage are persistent headaches and localized pain, gradual loss of sensation and movement, speech difficulty and persistent pain

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of neuro- diseases, scientists examined the methanol extract of Angelica sinensis (AS-M) effects on malignant brain tumors.

Angelica or Dang Qui is a herb of Genus Angelica from the family Apiaceae, indigenous to China.

The herb has been used as a Queen herb in traditional Chinese medicine antispasmodic and vasodilatory agent, and to balance the hormones in women for a normal menstrual cycle and menstruation and strengthen heart, spleen, kidneys, and liver for both men and women, etc. In other words, it is used to treat gynecological ailments, fatigue, mild anemia, and high blood pressure. It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, etc.

According to the results of the tested analysis,
* AS-M also displays potency in suppressing the growth of malignant brain tumor cells.

* AS-M suppressed the growth suppression of malignant brain tumor cells by AS-M through cell cycle arrest and apoptosis.

More precisely, AS-M upregulates the expression of cyclin kinase inhibitors involved in prohibiting progression from the G1 phase to the S phase in tested cancer cells.

* AS-M also exhibited the tumor suppressor expression of the p53 protein to induce apoptosis.

Collectively, in vivo studies, AS-M not only suppressed the growth of human malignant brain tumors but also significantly prolonged patient survival, involving cell cycle arrest, apoptosis, and antiangiogenesis.

Based on the results, researchers suggest, " The in vitro and in vivo anticancer effects of AS-M indicate that this extract warrants further investigation and potential development as a new anti-brain tumor agent, providing new hope for the chemotherapy of malignant brain cancer".

Taken altogether, Dandelion may be considered a remedy for the treatment of brain cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Common Fig or Fig (Ficus carica) Inhibits Breast Cancer in Vivo

By Kyle J. Norton

The woman breast is made up of specialized tissues that produce milk (glandular tissue) and fatty tissues. The size of a woman's breast is totally determined by the amount of fats.

Cancer is a class of chronic condition characterized by irregular cell growth associated with the alternation of cell DNA.

Breast cancer is a medical condition characterized by cell growth irregularly and disorderly in the breast tissues.

Most cases of breast cancer start in the cell on the surface of the inner lining of the breast tissue before spreading into deeper layers of the breast.

Signs and SymptomBreast cancer is first noticed as a painless lump in the breast or armpit and most often discovered by you or your partner may discover the lump or your doctor during a routine physical exam.
In the early case of cancer, symptoms normally include
1. Lump (mass) in the breast
2. Lump in the armpit (lymph nodes)
3. Nipple discharge (clear or bloody)
4. Inverted or retracted nipple
5. Scaly or pitted skin on nipple persistent tenderness of the breast
6. Unusual breast pain or discomfort
7. Etc.

In advance case of cancer, as cancer have spread to a distance of the body, symptoms include
1. Bone pain (Secondary tumors in the bone)
2. Shortness of breath (Secondary tumors in the lung)
3. Unintentional weight loss and drop in appetite (Secondary tumors in the liver)
4. Headaches, neurological pain or weakness (Secondary tumors in the nervous system)
5. Etc.

Fig is a species of F. Carica, belonging to the family Moraceae. It is a deciduous shrub, native to Southeast Asia. The tree can grow to a height of 33 ft and the fruit can be as large as 2.0 inches.

On finding natural compounds for the treatment of chronic diseases, researchers examined the latex of fig fruit (Ficus carica) on breast cancer growth.

The animal study included 24 female rats randomly divided into 3 groups as follow
* In the cancerous group, 0.5 ml 7, 12-dimethylbenz (a) anthracene was injected to nipple for breast cancer induction.

* In the control group received sesame oil at the same volume through similar route.

* In the fig latex treated group (Fle), breast cancer was induced and then 0.5 ml of fig latex was intratumorally injected on a daily basis for 4 weeks.

According to the tested differentiation,
* The tumor size in Fle group was significantly decreased in the latex group compared to the cancerous group.

* The red blood cell in the blood, hemoglobin, RBC and their indices were significantly decreased, whereas platelet, leukocyte, and white blood cell numbers were significantly increased in a cancerous group compared to the control group.

Most importantly, there were no differences in these parameters in the Fle group compared to the control group.

In other words, Fle group and control group exerted similar anti-breast cancer activity compared to the cancerous group.

Based on the evidence, researchers said, " fig latex could decrease tumor growth without having any adverse effect on hematological and histological factors".

Taken altogether, common fig or fig (Ficus carica)  may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of breast cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of SFN in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Cruciferous Vegetables in the Prevention and Treatment of Colorectal Cancer

By Kyle J. Norton

The colon-rectum formed a part of the digestive system is involved in the absorption of water from the small bowel contents and broken down of certain materials in the feces into substances of which some of them to be reabsorbed and reused by the body.

Colorectal cancer is a medical condition caused by cell growth irregularly in the tissue of the colon or rectum due to the alternation of cells DNA.

Colorectal cancer is relatively very common and slowly progressing cancer.

Overall, the lifetime risk of colorectal cancer developing is 1 in 22 (4.49%) in men and 1 in 24 (4.15%) in women.

According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, in the US, colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed in both men and women compared to other types of cancer.

The lifetime risk of colorectal cancer is 1 in 22 (4.49%) for men and 1 in 24 (4.15%) for women.

Approximately, 140,000 cases of colorectal cancer were diagnosed in the US in 2018. Colorectal cancer also causes the death of over 50, 000 people, representing 8.3% of total cancer death.

In general, the 5-year survival rate for people with colorectal cancer is 65%. However, the 5-year survival rate of localized colorectal cancer is about 90%.

Being overweight or obese. smoking, physical inactivity, excessive alcohol drinking, aging, family and personal history, genetic preposition are some of the prevalent risks of the disease.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of cancer, researchers examined the effects of cruciferous vegetables and their active compounds on colorectal cancer.

According to the dietary information, cruciferous vegetables modulated microRNAs (miRNAs) expression in the cancer cells and exerted chemo-preventive effects against colorectal cancers.

Cruciferous vegetables also interacted with the cancer-related gene and relevant signaling pathways to induce apoptosis and cytotoxicity.

Furthermore, by inhibiting the miRNAs expression associated with cancer biomarkers, cruciferous vegetables improved the diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers and utilized in cancer therapeutics.

Based on the findings, researchers wrote, "it is very possible that natural agents (not limited to those in cruciferous vegetables) enhance cancer therapeutic efficacy and elicit chemopreventive effects through modulating key miRNAs".

Taken altogether, cruciferous vegetables may be considered functional foods for the prevention and treatment of colorectal cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
