Herbal Ashwagandha Protects the Neurons Against the Risk of Neuroblastoma

By Kyle J. Norton

A neuron is a nerve cell that forms a building block of the nervous system.

Neuroblastoma is cancer developed by the immature nerve cells found in several areas of the body, mostly in and around the adrenal glands.

Cancer most commonly affects children age 5 or younger compared to less often in older children.

According to the statistics provided by the Cancer Net, approximately 800 children are diagnosed with neuroblastoma in the United States.

And 90% of children affected by neuroblastoma are children younger than 5.

Sadly, the the-5-year survival rate of cancer is less than 50%.

Most common symptoms are totally depending on the area that has been effected
* Neuroblastoma in the abdomen can induce symptoms of pains, a mass under the skin that isn't tender when touched and changes in bowel habits, such as diarrhea or constipation.

* Neuroblastoma in the chest may cause symptoms including wheezing, chest pain and changes to the eyes, including drooping eyelids and unequal pupil size
Some patients with neuroblastoma may also experience symptoms of back pain, fever, unexplained weight loss, and bone pain.

Ashwagandha also known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, Middle East, and the Mediterranean.

The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered as anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.

On finding a potent compound for the protection of neurons, researchers examined the effects of ashwagandha root extract consumption on human neuroblastoma (IMR32).

Human neuroblastoma (IMR32) cells, pretreated with Ashwagandha-reagents for 24 h, were exposed to H2O2 (300 μM) for 2 h, before incubating in control or test medium supplemented with either the alcoholic (i-Extract) or water (WEX) extracts or their active components (withanone or withaferin A), showed a significant effect on H2O2 by 40%.

Furthermore,  i-Extract, withanone or WEX also resulted in an increase in neuron viability by 20–30%.

In other words, IMR32 cells treated by i-Extract, withanone or WEX protected the neuron integrity and viability against the oxidative activity of H2O2 that causes DNA damage to the brain cells.

On LDH assay analysis, Dr. Navjot Shah, the lead scientist said, " Similar to the viability assay, LDH assay also showed the least protective effect in case of withaferin A-treated cells. Furthermore, cell morphology endorsed that the i-Extract, withanone, and WEX protected IMR32 and C6 cells against H2O2 stress".

Taken altogether, Ashwagandha may be considered a functional herb that protects the neurons against the onset of neuroblastoma, pending to the result of larger sample size and multicenter study

Cranberry Restores Cholesterol Profiles and Improves Endothelial Functioning in Vivo

By Kyle J. Norton

Cholesterol produced by the liver and from the dietary sources is needed for the cell to build strong membrane,  produce steroid hormone, bile acids, and vitamin D and aid the digestive functioning.

Most people with high blood cholesterol at the early do not experience any symptoms, however, as the levels of blood cholesterol continue to grow, at some points, patients may experience heart-related symptoms, including chest pain or angina, pain while walking caused by reduced blood flow to the legs.

In serious cases, elevated blood cholesterol can also induce symptoms of stroke and heart attack.

There are 2 types of blood cholesterol
* Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) also is known as “bad cholesterol”. Bad cholesterol is a major cause of plaque build-up in the arteries and a leading cause of coronary heart disease.

*High-density lipoprotein (HDL) is known as “good cholesterol”. HDL removes LDL cholesterol from your arteries back to the liver.

The healthy ratio of blood cholesterol is 4 LDL)/ 1HLD

Besides a high-fat diet, certain risk factors such as the family history of high cholesterol, being overweight or obese, physical inactivity, excessive alcohol intake, smoking and some health conditions including diabetes, kidney disease, and liver disease have been found to increase the risk of high blood cholesterol.

Epidemiological studies also suggested that a high level of blood cholesterol is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease.

The endothelium is a thin membrane that lines the inside of the heart and blood vessels. The endothelium cells process an essential function in controlling vascular relaxation and contraction.

Furthermore, the endothelium cells also control enzymes associated with blood clotting, immune function, and platelet adhesion.

Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belongings to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia. Because of its health benefits, cranberry has been cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of prostate diseases, researchers examined the effect on chronic cranberry juice consumption on cholesterol profiles and vascular functions in an estrogen-deficient animal model.

The study included ovariectomized rats that were treated daily with commercial cranberry juice at 7 mg/kg for 8 weeks, and a dosage comparable to recent clinical studies.

According to the tested analysis, cranberry juice consumption reduced circulating levels of total cholesterol, triacylglycerols, HDL, nHDL, and nHDL/HDL ratio.

Futhermore, cranberry juice consumption improved endothelium-dependent relaxation in the aorta of ovariectomized rats by restoring p-eNOS level (endothelial nitric oxide synthase.

Overexpression of renin-angiotensin system markers (angiotensin-converting enzyme, angiotensin II, and angiotensin II type 1 receptor) associated with blood pressure was also inhibited by commercial cranberry juice.

Furthermore, commercial cranberry juice also normalizes the elevated NAD(P)H oxidase expression and oxidative stress involved in the increased levels of ROS.

Based on the findings, researchers concluded. " the novel cardiovascular benefits of cranberry juice consumption in improving both vascular functions and cholesterol profiles".

Taken altogether, cranberry may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Turmeric Inhibits Hyperglycemia induced-Diabetics Complications in Type II Diabetes

By Kyle J. Norton

Hyperglycemia is a condition of abnormally high blood glucose, a hallmark of patients with type II diabetes.istics

According to the statistics provided by the American Diabetes Association,  in 2015, 30.3 million Americans, or 9.4% of the population had diabetes.

Sadly to know that out of the 30.3 million adults with diabetes, 23.1 million were diagnosed, and 7.2 million were undiagnosed.

Long-term hyperglycemia can lead to complications that affect the normal function of the eyes, kidneys, nerves, and heart. In other words, persistent abnormal high blood glucose can cause diseases associated with the eyes, kidneys, nerves, and heart as a result of small blood damage.

According to the epidemiological studies, various risk factors including unhealthy diet and food and physical inactivity choices, chronic illness and long-term use of certain conventional medication have been found to contribute to hyperglycemia in people with type II diabetes.

Also, people with type II diabetes who frequently skip or not take enough glucose-lowering medication are also in the list of hyperglycemic developing.

Most patients with hyperglycemia are asymptomatic until the levels of blood glucose are elevated over the range of 180 to 200 milligrams per deciliter.

If you are diabetics and have symptoms of frequent urination, increased thirst, fatigue, and headache, please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility of hyperglycemia.

Some researchers suggest that type 2 diabetes patients who are obese are more likely to develop hyperglycemia, compared to non-obese patients.

Dr. Martyn JA, the lead scientist said, "Obesity is a major cause of type 2 diabetes, clinically evidenced as hyperglycemia. The altered glucose homeostasis is caused by faulty signal transduction via the insulin signaling proteins, which results in decreased glucose uptake by the muscle, altered lipogenesis, and increased glucose output by the liver".

And, " Hormones and cytokines from adipocytes can enhance or inhibit both glycemic sensing and insulin signaling".

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

Researchers on finding a potential compound for the prevention and treatment of hyperglycemia evaluated the effect of turmeric on patients with type II diabetes.

The study was conducted by reviewing studies published in PubMed from 1998 to 2013, indicating the role of curcumin in attenuation of many pathophysiological processes involved in the development and progression of hyperglycemia.

According to the results of selected studies
* Curcumin showed a significant effect in reducing blood glucose level by decreased hepatic glucose production, and suppression of hyperglycemia-induced inflammatory state.

* Oral administration curcumin inhibited the gene expression of GLUT4, GLUT2, and GLUT3 in the induction of glucose uptake.

* Furthermore, curcumin also activated the proteins that control preproinsulin gene expression in pancreatic islet beta-cells in stimulating insulin secretion.

In other words, curcumin inhibited hyperglycemia by improving pancreatic cell function, inhibiting genes associated with glucose uptake and reducing insulin resistance.

In order to reveal more information of turmeric anti hyperglycemia in type II diabetes, researchers evaluated the effects of three turmeric extracts on blood glucose levels in type 2 diabetic KK-A(y) mice (6 weeks old, n = 5/group).

The turmeric extracts used in the study were obtained by ethanol extraction (E-ext) to yield both curcuminoids and sesquiterpenoids, hexane extraction (H-ext) to yield sesquiterpenoids, and ethanol extraction from the hexane-extraction residue (HE-ext) to yield curcuminoids.

In the study, the control group was fed a basal diet, while the other groups were fed a diet containing 0.1 or 0.5 g of H-ext or HE-ext/100 g of diet or 0.2 or 1.0 g of E-ext/100 g of diet for 4 weeks.

During the experiment, groups fed with 0.2 or 1.0 g of E-text, 0.5 g of H-ext, and 0.5 g of HE-ext/100 g of diet showed significant suppression of the increase in blood glucose levels compared to the blood glucose levels in the control group that significantly increased (P < 0.01) after 4 weeks.

Similar to the aforementioned results, E-ext improved hyperglycemia by stimulating the function of proteins that control preproinsulin gene expression in pancreatic islet beta-cells in stimulating insulin secretion.

Taken altogether, turmeric processed a high amount of bioactive compound curcumin used alone or combined with other herbal medicines may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of hyperglycemia in patients with type 2 diabetes, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Legume Reduces Cardio-Metabolic Risk, According to Study

By Kyle J. Norton

Cardiometabolic risk is a condition that plays a critical role in developing atherosclerotic cardiovascular (CV) disease and diabetes mellitus.

Cardioprotection is a process including the use of substances associated with the preserve of the function and viability of cardiac muscle tissue by the reintroduction of oxygenic blood flow back to the tissues.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a group of conditions caused by the underlying damage of blood vessels and the heart.

More precisely, CVD can be coronary artery diseases (CAD) such as angina, myocardial infarction (commonly known as a heart attack) or stroke, depending on the location of the blockage or disruption,

According to the statistics provided by the American Heart Association, approximately 84 million people in this US living with some form of cardiovascular disease. The condition has also been found to cause the death of about 2,200 people a day.

Atherosclerosis is a medical condition caused by plaque accumulated on the wall of arteries, leading to the narrowing of the artery and reducing oxygen risk blood flow to the heart and brain.

Depending on the location of the blockage, if the reduced blood flow occurred in the brain, it will cause the death of the brain cells, leading to stroke.

However, if the reduced blood flow occurred in the heart, it will cause damage to the heart tissues, leading to heart disease.

The most common disease associated with atherosclerosis is coronary artery disease. Plaques are made up of cholesterol, calcium and other chemical substances in the artery

Most people with atherosclerosis are asymptomatic at the early stage.

Diabetes is a medical condition characterized by insufficient insulins in the bloodstream. or insulins in the bloodstream are not used properly to convert glucose to energy.

Epidemiologically, diabetes is caused by either the beta cells in the pancreas died-off or insulin receptors with a function that uses insulin to convert glucose to energy clogged-up by fat or cholesterol.

In a healthy individual, after eating, the rise of blood glucose triggers the production of insulin by the pancreas into bloodstream After you eat, your blood sugar (glucose) rises. This rise in glucose triggers your pancreas to release insulin into the bloodstream that travels through the blood to your body's cells before converting glucose into energy or store it to use later.

In other words, insulin released by the pancreas joints with the Insulin receptors on the outer part of a cell that binds insulin in the blood to convert glucose to energy.

A legume a plant in the family Fabaceae (or Leguminosae)cultivated around the globe for its seed ot fruit. Legumes are commonly eaten around the world.

On finding a potent ingredient for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases, researchers examined the effect of legume including green bean on cardio-metabolic risk.

According to the study led by the Dr. Malika Bouchenak, polysaccharides composition and phytochemicals: bioactive compounds, including enzyme inhibitors, phytohemagglutinins (lectins) found in the legume show a significant activity to improve the cardio functioning against the risk of coronary heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, and inflammation.

Additionally, all chemical compounds have been found to work synergistically or antagonistically by exerting the interaction with other components of the diet to improve health and prevent diseases.

Particularly, the nutritional quality of legumes may contribute to cardiometabolic risk prevention.

However, the legume mitigating effects and the mechanism of their activities need to be further addressed by additional large sample size and multicenter study.

Herbal Turmeric, the Natural Prevention and Treatment of Psoriasis

By Kyle J. Norton

Psoriasis is a common skin condition caused by speeding up the life cycle of skin cells, leading to death skin built-up on the surface of the affected area.

Most common symptoms of psoriasis are the formation of scales and red patches inducing pain and itchiness.

In severe cases, the disease can also cause symptoms of dry, cracked skin, thickened, pitted or ridged nails and swollen and stiff joints, depending on the speed of the skin cell life cycle.

If you have experienced some of the aforementioned symptoms, you may have psoriasis, please check with your doctor.

Most common risk factors associated with psoriasis are family history, long-term stress, skin injury, medication, bacterial and viral infection, smoking and excessive alcohol drinking.

Dr. F Prignano, the lead scientist in the evaluated the itch in psoriasis: epidemiology, clinical aspects, and treatment options wrote, "Almost 85% of psoriatic patients suffered from itching; the frequency of pruritus was daily and mean intensity by VAS scale was moderate. Presence and intensity of pruritus and body mass index (BMI) were correlated. 40% of patients with pruritus were overweight (BMI > 25 < 30) and 10% obese (BMI > 30)".

And, "Emollients, topical steroids, and calcipotriol cream could relieve pruritus but their effect was temporary. Among the antipsoriatic therapies, phototherapy with narrowband ultraviolet B (nb-UVB) was the most effective treatment in reducing pruritus. Biological therapies, mainly etanercept and efalizumab, proved useful in its control".

In other words, if you are obese, your risk of psoriasis increase substantially compared to those who are not.

On finding a natural compound for the treatment of psoriasis, researchers evaluated the effect of turmeric used as immune modulation and anti-inflammatory therapy on scalp psoriasis.

The study included 40 patients with mild-to-moderate scalp psoriasis who fulfilled the inclusion criteria were randomly allocated into two groups with the case group received turmeric tonic twice a day compared to placebo applied in the same manner.for 9 weeks.

According to the evaluation at the baseline, weeks 3, 6, and 9, compared to the placebo, turmeric tonic significantly reduced the erythema, scaling and induration of lesions (PASI score), and also improved the patients' quality of life.

In other words, turmeric inhibited the symptoms and the progression of psoriasis without inducing any side effects in participants.

Most patients at the end of the experiment expressed the satisfaction of the clinical effects of turmeric tonic on scalp psoriasis.

Based on the findings, Dr. Bahraini P, the lead scientist wrote, "This formulation could be considered as a treatment for scalp psoriasis".

Furthermore, the Islamic Azad University, in the evaluation of Curcuma longa effect against several inflammatory enzymes mainly involved in the inflammatory process of psoriasis, conducted a randomized, prospective intra-individual, right-left comparative, placebo-controlled, double-blind clinical trial in 34 patients with mild to moderate plaque psoriasis found that turmeric showed an improvement of the clinical and quality of life parameters in treated patients compared to untreated control.

Researchers, after taking into account co and confounders, said, "Based on our findings, the proposed microemulgel may well be considered as an alternative in some patients and most likely as an add-on therapeutic option for many patients suffering from plaque psoriasis".

Taken altogether, turmeric may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of psoriasis, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Turnip, the Anti-Hypoxia Herbal Remedy

By Kyle J. Norton

Hypoxia is an urgent medical emergency of deficiency in the amount of oxygen reaching the tissues.

In other words, if your body does not get enough oxygen, you might get hypoxia. The condition has been found to induce brain, liver, and other organs damaged just minutes after symptoms starting.

The most common symptoms of hypoxia are associated with a lack of oxygen that reaches the organs and tissues, including changes in the color of the skin, ranging from blue to cherry red, confusion, cough, increased heart rate, rapid breathing and shortness of breath.

Most common risk factors associated with the onset of hypoxia are damage to lung due to trauma, medical conditions as an asthma attack, lung diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), emphysema, bronchitis, pneumonia, and pulmonary edema, intake of certain medications that hold back breathing and people with severe anemia.

The most common treatment of hypoxia is to withdraw medications that cause the condition and give additional oxygen to the patient quickly. Almost all patients respond to additional oxygen supplied by a nasal cannula.

Tibetan turnip (Brassica rapa L.), native in Tibet region, is a medical plant used in Tibet as a “tonic and anti-hypoxia” “heat-clearing and detoxification” and “alleviating fatigue” herbal medications.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of hypoxia, researchers conducted a joint study led by Zhejiang University on an animal model.

Selected male ICR mice included in the study were assigned to the normoxia group and several hypoxia groups, given sterile water, p-coumaric acid (CA) or dexamethasone orally, once daily for four consecutive days.

Based on the results of the analysis in a hypoxic environment of 9.5% O2,, mice treated with 100 mg/kg body wt CA showed a significantly lower lung water content (LWC), and the protein content of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) content than mice in the hypoxia vehicle group.

Where lower lung water content (LWC), and the protein content of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF)content are the symptoms of the deficient amount of oxygen in the lung.

Moreover, mice treated by CA also protect the lung functioning by showing an intact lung blood-gas-barrier, increased levels of plasma total NO,

Additionally, levels of preproendothelin-1 (PPET1), associated with the vasoconstriction was also decreased in the CA treatment group.

More importantly, CA induced the production of occludin, a tight junction protein in maintaining the integrity of the lung epithelial barrier against hypoxia.

Taken altogether, turnip may be considered herbal medicine for the prevention and treatment of hypoxia, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Brassica Food plants in the Prevention and Treatment of Cardiac Hypertrophy

By Kyle J. Norton

Hypertrophy is a process or condition that increases and growth of muscle cells by increasing the muscular size achieved through exercise.

Lifting weights are the most common way to increase hypertrophy.

In other words, hypertrophy is the enlargement of an organ or tissue from the increase in the size of its cells by increasing the number of contractile proteins in each muscle fiber.

There are two types of muscular hypertrophy including the growth of muscle contraction parts or myofibrillar and the increased muscle glycogen storage or sarcoplasmic.

Myofibrillar training improves the strength and speed, compared to sarcoplasmic growth that sustains more energy in endurance athletic events.

Cardiac hypertrophy is a medical condition associated with the abnormal enlargement, or thickening, of the heart muscle.

The most common causes of cardiac hypertrophy are the results of hypertension or valvular disease.

The condition can also be caused by athletic hypertrophy (a condition related to exercise), valve disease, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HOCM), and congenital heart disease.

The most common symptoms are shortness of breath, chest pain, and palpitation, especially during exercise.

On finding a potential compound that attenuates cardiac H9c2 cell hypertrophy, researchers examined the effects of 3,3'-Diindolylmethane (DIM) is the major product of the acid-catalyzed condensation of indole-3-carbinol (I3C), a component of extracts of Brassica food plants.

The study was conducted using an in vitro model with 1 µM angiotensin II (Ang II) in cultured rat cardiac H9c2 cells, to observe the effects of DIM on cardiac hypertrophy.

According to the tested analysis, the optimal concentration of DIM for 6, 12, and 24 h. showed a significant effect on the atrial natriuretic peptide, brain natriuretic peptide, and myosin heavy chain β mRNA expression induced by Ang II in H9c2 cells.

In other words, DIM lower the blood pressure, promotes diuresis, natriuresis, vasodilation of the systemic and pulmonary vasculature, and reduction of circulating levels of endothelin and aldosterone and cardiac muscle contraction induced by Ang II in H9c2 cells.

Furthermore, H9c2 cells treated with DIM for 0, 15, 30, and 60 min induced by Ang II also improve the function of 5'-AMP-activated protein kinase catalytic subunit alpha-1 that regulates the activities of a number of key metabolic enzymes in protecting the cardiac cells from stresses in response to hypertrophic stimuli.

Based on the findings, Brassica food plants consist of DIM that may be used for the prevention of cardiac hypertrophy, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
