Herbal Artichoke Health Benefit

By Kyle J. Norton

Artichoke is a perennial thistle of Cynara cardunculus species of the Cynara genus, belonging to the family Carduoideae native to Southern Europe around the Mediterranean.

The herbal plant has been used in traditional medicine for as liver protective and detoxified agent, and to treat digestive disorders, abdominal pain gas and bloating, etc.

Fructooligosaccharides (FOS), are oligosaccharide, a molecule made up of a small group of these sugar,

Due to its nature as a natural source of sugar and low in calories,  FOS may be used as an alternative sweetener as intake of FOS does not cause a spike in blood sugar.

FOS are considered prebiotics. Intake of FOS can increase the levels of good bacteria in the intestine, leading to a healthy ratio of gut microbiota.

Digestively, FOS contains high levels of soluble fiber which has been found to improve bowel function. Consumption of FOS also increased fecal bolus and the frequency of depositions, while a dose of 4-15 g/day given to healthy subjects has been found to reduce constipation.

According to the study, FOS also showed anti toxicity, carcinogenicity, and genotoxic effects.

FOS improved mineral absorption by decreasing levels of  pH in the colon, thus facilitating the absorption of mineral ions from the intestine, mainly calcium and magnesium

Furthermore, FOS also found in studies decrease levels of serum cholesterol, triacylglycerols, the lead causes of cardiovascular diseases.

By modulating the levels of phospholipids, FOS lower the risk of coronary heart disease, inflammation or cancer, particularly in colon cancer.

In foods, FOS are increasingly included in food products and infant formulas for their prebiotic effect in stimulating the growth of nonpathogenic intestinal microflora.

In the examined the effects of chronic ingestion of short-chain fructooligosaccharides (FOS), an indigestible carbohydrate, on hepatic glucose production, insulin-mediated glucose metabolism, erythrocyte insulin binding, and blood lipids in 12 healthy volunteers selected received either 20 g FOS/d or sucrose for 4 wk in a double-blind crossover design, researchers found that the mean (+/- SEM) basal hepatic glucose production was lower after FOS than after sucrose consumption, through the effects on insulin-stimulated glucose metabolism in healthy subjects.

Taken altogether, artichoke processed many health benefits may be used as a functional remedy for diseases prevention in healthy subjects, pending to the validation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Ginger, the Natural Treatment for Gastric/Stomach Ulcers

By Kyle J. Norton

Gastric ulcers or stomach ulcers are conditions characterized by the painful sores in the stomach lining. Unlike the gastric ulcers, peptic ulcers are sores found in the stomach and small intestines.

The exact causes of gastric ulcer are not clearly identified. However, according to the epidemiological studies, a bacterial infection caused by the H. pylori infection has been found in the range of 30 to 50% of people with stomach ulcers.

Gastric ulcers caused by H. pylori infection are more likely to develop in patients over 40 in the US

Other risk factors associated with gastric ulcer include long-term use of certain medications, such as NSAID which has been found to cause more than 50% of peptic ulcers and stress.

Treatment of gastric ulcers is depended totally on the underlying causes, including antacids for the reduced acid in the stomach, and antibiotics for the elimination of Helicobacter pylori.

Unfortunately, people with gastric ulcer infected by the Helicobacter pylori treated with antibiotics have a higher risk of recurrence. In severe cases, surgery may be necessary.

Untreated or uncovered stomach ulcers may induce some complications, including stomach bleeding penetration,  and cancer.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine for the treatment of dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

With an aim to find a potential ingredient for the treatment of gastric ulcers with no side effects, researchers examined the possible mechanism of the protective effect of ginger on the aspirin-induced gastric ulcer.

The study included 40 adult male albino rats randomized divided  into four groups (10 animal per each group) and orally received the followings once daily for 5 days:

Group I: 3 ml of 1% carboxymethyl cellulose;

Group II: ginger powder (200 mg/kg body weight) suspended in 3 mL of 1% carboxymethylcellulose;

Group III: aspirin (400 mg/kg body weight) suspended in 3 ml of 1% carboxymethylcellulose in water.

Group IV: ginger and 30 minutes later, received aspirin suspended in 1% carboxymethylcellulose, in similar doses as received in groups II and III.

Before treatment of ginger, Aspirin-induced a significant increase of the macroscopic ulcer score, and gastric damage observed by the shed and disrupted epithelium, mucosal hemorrhage, submucosal edema and leukocyte infiltration, loss of the mucus of the mucosal surface.

Furthermore, in the proteins perspective, Aspirin significantly increased expression of apoptosis regulator Bax, inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) associated with the production of proinflammatory cytokines and heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) involved stress response.

Injection of ginger protected the gastric integrity by restoring all damage caused by aspirin in the induction of gastric ulcer.

Dr. Salah Khalil M, said, "Ginger ameliorated the histological changes by reducing Bax and iNOS and increasing HSP70 expressions".

In other words, the overexpression of proteins associated with the onset of gastric ulcer also was significantly reduced by the ginger administration.

Take all together, ginger may be considered a functional alternative for the treatment of gastric ulcers, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Bilberry Protects the Nerve System against Neurotoxicity

By Kyle J. Norton

Neurotoxicity refers to the destruction of nerve tissue caused by toxins that have entered central and/or peripheral nervous system.

In other words, neurotoxicity is a result of any substance including a biological, chemical, or physical agent that causes an adverse effect on the nerve system.

Central nerve system comprised the brain and spinal cord is the complex of nerve tissues that control the activities of the body through the message transmitted by the neurons.

Most common causes of neurotoxicity are exposure to natural or man-made toxic substances, including drug, and medication. Long-term exposure to those toxins has been found to alter the activity of the nervous system.

Most common symptoms of neurotoxicity are a headache, altered sensation, tingling and numbness in the limbs.

In severe cases, neurotoxicity can induce vission loss, loss of memory and cognitive function and change behavior, psychological problems and sexual dysfunction.

Therefore, if you are taking medication and experience some of the aforementioned symptoms, please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility of a medication overdose.

Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.

The plant berry has been used as herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, and duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, and psoriasis, diabetes, etc.

Researchers with an aim to discover a natural compound which protects the neurons damage induced neurotransmitter dopamine (DA) by a neurotoxic metabolite, 6-hydroxy DA, through increased expression of ROS examined the effects the antioxidant activities of anthocyanin-rich preparations of Vaccinium species (Vaccinium myrtillus, Vaccinium corymbosum, and Vaccinium oxycoccus).

V. myrtillus preparation: 50% inhibition with 7 microM of total anthocyanins were the most potent inhibition of oxidation and 1.5-4 times higher than that for the other preparations or for the purified anthocyanin.

According to the components analysis, antioxidant activity in the assay correlated strongly with the Vaccinium content of anthocyanins and total cyanidins, but not quercetin or myricetin.

Based in the findings, researchers wrote in the final report, "The results provide evidence for the high potency of anthocyanins towards a potentially neurotoxic reaction, and provide a basis for in vivo testing of these flavonoids and their physiological metabolites in the context of neuro- and mitochondrial-protective effects".

In order to reveal more information about bilberry anti neurotoxic activity, researchers once against evaluated the Vaccinium myrtillus (bilberry) anthocyanoside (VMA) and/or its main anthocyanidin constituents (cyanidin, delphinidin, and malvidin) protection of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) against neurotoxicity in the induction of retinal damage.

The vitro study included RGC cultures (RGC-5, a rat ganglion cell-line transformed using E1A virus) and cell damage and radical activation induced by 3-(4-morpholinyl) sydnonimine hydrochloride (SIN-1, a peroxynitrite donor).

The vivo study included mice induced retinal damage by N-methyl-D-aspartic acid (NMDA)-

According to the assays, VMA and all three anthocyanidins significantly inhibited SIN-1-induced neurotoxicity and radical activation in RGC-5 in vitro and in mouse forebrain homogenates.
VMA inhibited lipid peroxidation in concentration-dependent manner.

Furthermore, intravitreously injected VMA significantly inhibited the NMDA-induced morphological retinal damage and increased TUNEL-positive cells in the ganglion cell layer.

Where terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) is a method for detecting DNA fragmentation of DNA breaks generated during apoptosis.

The results suggested VMA and its bioactive comapound anthocyanidins process neuroprotective effects in vitro and in vivo models of retinal diseases.

Taken altogether, bilberry processed abundantly bioactive compound anthocyanoside may be considered a function remedy for the prevention and treatment against neurotoxicity, pending to the validation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Bioactive Plantbased Betanin Protects the Liver Against Injury Naturally

By Kyle J. Norton

Liver injury may be a result caused by physical impact or penetrating trauma. In some cases, liver injury can also be induced by toxicity, leading to acute liver injury.

Liver injury can be mild or severe. In a mild case, liver injury can recover itself. However, in severe cases. surgery to stop the bleeding and remove the part of injury may be necessary.

Most cases of liver injury can lead to abdominal pain and tenderness caused by bleeding blood in the abdomen that irritates the abdominal tissue.

The severity of a liver injury can be diagnosed by computed tomography (CT) or ultrasonography.

According to the statistics, liver injury has been found constituting 5% of all traumas, making it the most common abdominal injury.

Liver injury can be classified by the liver injury scale, depending on the area of the damage
* Grade I <10% surface area < 1 cm in depth
* Grade II 10–50% surface area 1–3 cm
* Grade III >50% or >10 cm >3 cm
* Grade IV 25–75% of a hepatic lobe \
* Grade V >75% of a hepatic lobe
and grade VI Hepatic avulsion

In other words, based on the grade of liver injury, patients either treated with nonoperative management and observation for a full self-recovery or surgery.

Betanin is Phytochemicals in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments of Betacyanins, belonging to the group of Betalains, found abundantly in beets, chard, etc.

With an aim to find a natural compound for the protection of liver against injury researchers examined protective effect of betanin against liver injury induced by carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) in common carp (Cyprinus carpio L.).

The study included fish treated with 1, 2, and 4 % betanin in fodder throughout the experiment for 20 days followed by intraperitoneally injected with 20 % (v/v in peanut oil) carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) at a volume of 0.5 mL/kg body weight.

Where carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)  is a highly toxic liquid chemical.

Injection of CCL4, after 3 days showed liver histological damages accompanied by the induced liver CYP2E1 activity associated with some degrees of steatosis and increased serum aspartate aminotransferase (AST)/alanine aminotransferase (ALT), the indication of oxidative stress.

Furthermore, CCL4 also induced liver damage expressed by the depletion of glycogen storage.

Compared with the CCl4 control group, the betanin-treated groups reduced CYP2E1 expression, decreased malondialdehyde level, increased liver antioxidative capacity observed by the increased glutathione level and superoxide dismutase and catalase activities.

Moreover, the betanin-treated groups also increased liver glycogen storage, and reduced serum AST/ALT activities, with significant differences in the 2 and 4 % treatment groups.

These results suggested betanin processes liver protective effects against liver injury by restoring some levels of liver function through its antioxidant activity.

Dr. Han J, the lead scientist wrote in the final report, " betanin attenuates CCl4-induced liver damage in common carp. Moreover, the inhibition of CYP2E1 activity and oxidative stress may have significant roles in the protective effect of betanin".

Taken altogether, betanin may be considered supplements for the treatment of liver injury, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of betanin in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Phytochemical 3,3'-Diindolylmethane Prevents the Onset of Hypoxia

By Kyle J. Norton

Hypoxia is a condition of deficiency in the amount of oxygen reaching the tissues, leading to permanent damage to the brain, liver, and other organs.

Most common symptoms of hypoxia include fast heart rate, rapid breathing, shortness of breath, slow heart rate and sweating.

Hypoxemia is a condition of the abnormally low level of oxygen in the blood.

There are many risk factors associated with the onset of hypoxemia, including reduced oxygen levels on the high altitude, damage of the lung that affects the breathing and exhaling function.

People with lung and heart disease such as asthma, poor blood circulation, and anemia are at a higher risk of hypoxemia.

3,3'-Diindolylmethane or DIM are phytochemicals derived from the digestion of indole-3-carbinol, belonging to the group of Indoles, found abundantly in broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, and kale, etc.

In the searching a potential compoundagainstt the onset of hypoxia, researchers examined the neuroprotective potential of 3,3'-diindolylmethane (DIM) in cellular and animal models of Parkinson's disease and lipopolysaccharide-induced inflammation.

In hypoxia-induced damage in mouse hippocampal cells in primary cultures, the 18 h of hypoxia-induced apoptotic processes in terms of the mitochondrial membrane potential, associated with the process of energy storage during oxidative phosphorylation. activation of a protein associated with cell death induced by fragmentation of cell nuclei.

Injection the DIM significantly demonstrated strong neuroprotective and anti-apoptotic actions in hippocampal cells exposed to hypoxia through decreasing the expression genes (Ahr and Arnt) involved the regulation of inflammatory signaling pathways and increasing the gene (Erβ) expression involved suppressing the inflammatory responses.

Futhermore, DIM decreased the expression of AhR-regulated CYP1A1 in stimulating the inflammatory response.

The results strongly suggested impairment of protein expression of AhR and ARNT, but not ERβ plays a key role in the neuroprotective action of DIM against hypoxia-induced cell damage.

Where aryl hydrocarbon receptor nuclear translocator (ARNT) is a component of the DNA binding form of the Ah receptor required for receptor function.

And aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) is protein associated with the regulation of genes expression.

In other words, the mutation of genes aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) or aryl hydrocarbon receptor nuclear translocator (ARNT) are the culprits in the induction of neuro oxygen deficiency.

Based on the findings, researchers wrote in the final report, "This study may have implication for identifying new agents that could protect neurons against hypoxia by targeting AhR/ARNT signaling".

Furthermore, in hypoxia induces oxidative damage in retinal pigment epithelial cells (RPE cells) by cobalt chloride (CoCl2, 200 µM) and/or DIM (10 and 20 µM). DIM significantly attenuated the CoCl2-induced expression of a protein (VEGF) associated with the formation of blood vessels in the ARPE-19 cells compared to the lower levels under normal condition.

Similar to those of the aforementioned characteristics, DIM deactivated the genes which play an integral role in the body's response to low oxygen concentrations (HIF-1α) and pro-apoptosis (NF-κB, p38 MAPK) induced by CoCl2.

DIM also inhibited the induction of hypoxia by CoCl2 through the inhibition of oxidative stress detected by fluorescence microplate assay.

Taken altogether, 3,3'-Diindolylmethane derived from the digestion of indole-3-carbinol may be considered a supplement for the prevention of hypoxia, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Turmeric Protects Your Vision Against Eye Diseases

By Kyle J. Norton

Eye diseases are the condition characterized by the change of vision, including a gradual loss of cells in the retina and neurons associated with the loss of vision.

Most eye diseases at the early stage are asymptomatic and painless with no change in the vision until the disease has become quite advanced.

People have an eye problem at one time and another. Most eye conditions are minor and go away sometimes without even noticing.

Most common causes of eye diseases are inflammation as a result of microbial infection, including bacterial, viral, parasitic or fungal infection, eye structure damage due to physical impact, genetic preposition due to mutation of certain associated with the vision, medical conditions such as diabetes and allergens.

In elderly, eye diseases are caused by optic nerve damage and visual field loss, hormone change, aging induce loss of flexible of eye small blood vessels and eye muscles due to aging,.... including age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, cataract.

According to statistics, approximately one person in three has some form of vision-reducing eye disease by the age of 65 in the US. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD), glaucoma, cataract are the most prevalent eye disease found in the elderly.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

With an aim to find a natural whole food or supplement for the treatment of eye disease, researchers examined curcumin, the major curcuminoid of the turmeric, used in many countries since ancient time for preventing and/or treating major anterior segment eye diseases.

In vitro and in vivo, curcumin showed beneficial effects on major anterior segment eye diseases, including the anti-angiogenesis effect in corneal diseases; anti-inflammation or anti-allergy effects in dry eye disease, conjunctivitis.

Injection of curcumin protected the eye against the attacks of free radicals and degradation in cataracts and neuroprotective effects in glaucoma.

In vitro, a novel nanocarrier formulation comprising Pluronic-F127 stabilized D-α-Tocopherol polyethylene glycol 1000 succinate nanoparticles, used to solubilize high concentrations (4.3 mg/mL) of curcumin exerted a significantly protect against cobalt chloride induced hypoxia and glutamate-induced toxicity on the retinal cell line (R28).

In vivo, the novel nanocarrier formulation protects the eye against models of ocular hypertension (OHT) and partial optic nerve transection (pONT).

The findings strongly support the notion of curcumin and curcumin combined with other supplements extensively used in many countries since ancient time for preventing and/or treating a multitude of diseases including eye disease.

Also, the topical application of CN twice-daily for three weeks significantly reduced retinal ganglion cell loss compared to controls.

Dr, the lead scientist said, "Our novel topical CN formulation has potential as an effective neuroprotective therapy in glaucoma and other eye diseases with neuronal pathology".

Taken altogether, turmeric may be considered a supplement for the prevention and combined with primary medicine for the treatment of eye disease, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Curcumin, the Bioactive Compound of Turmeric Protects the Blood Vessels Against Cardiovascular Disease

By Kyle J. Norton

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) refers to any conditions caused by the underlying damage of blood vessels and the heart.

In other words, depending on the location of the blockage or disruption, CVD can be coronary artery diseases (CAD) such as angina, myocardial infarction (commonly known as a heart attack) or stroke.

According to the statistics provided by the American Heart Association, approximately 84 million people in this US suffer from some form of cardiovascular disease, leading to the death of about 2,200 people a day.

The exact causes of CVD are not identified. however, the most prevalent factors that cause CVD are aging, family history, unhealthy diet, lack of exercise, being overweight and smoking.

Epidemiological studies suggested that most people with CVD are also associated with atherosclerosis, a condition caused by long-term plaque buildup on artery walls, which can narrow the arteries and reduce blood flow through your arteries to the heart.

Some researchers suggested the promotion of the Western diet over the past few decades may have a strong implication on the rise of CVD.

Dr. Mirmiran P, the lead scientist, in the examination of the diet pattern and the risk of CVD in Iran, said, "During a mean 4.7 ± 1.4 years of follow-up, 57 participants experienced CVD-related events. In the fully adjusted model, we observed an increased risk of CVD-related events in the highest compared to the lowest tertile category of Western dietary pattern score (HR = 2.07, 95% CI = 1.03-4.18, P for trend = 0.01)".

And "the Western dietary pattern, characterized by higher loads of processed meats, salty snacks, sweets, and soft drinks, is a dietary risk factor for CVD in the Iranian population".

The results strongly indicated the increased risk of CVD in people who follow the Western diet pattern.

In the urgency to discover a potential compound for the treatment of cardiovascular disease (CVD) associated with the largest mortality worldwide, scientists examined the cardiovascular protective properties of curcumin in CVDs.

According to the review, curcumin showed significant activity against the onset of CVDs, including cardiac hypertrophy, heart failure, drug-induced cardiotoxicity, myocardial infarction, atherosclerosis, abdominal aortic aneurysm, stroke, and diabetic cardiovascular complications.

In dyslipidemia, an important and common cardiovascular risk factor in the general population, researchers assessed the efficacy and safety of turmeric and curcumin in lowering blood lipids in patients at risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), through searching the database of medical literature.

The comprehensive literature search conducted on PubMed, Embase, Ovid, Medline and Cochrane Library databases were to identify randomized controlled trials (published as of November 2016).

Based on the results of 7 eligible studies (649 patients) satisfied the guideline and criteria, researchers found that
* Turmeric and curcumin significantly reduced serum low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels as compared to those in the control group.

* Turmeric and curcumin also were effective in lowering serum total cholesterol (TC), levels in patients with metabolic syndrome.

* Turmeric extract have a greater effect on reducing serum TC levels compared to curcumin.

* Both turmeric and curcumin did not improve the serum high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C).

* More importantly, turmeric and curcumin are safe, and no serious adverse events were reported in any of the included studies.

Dr. Qin S, the lead researcher wrote, "Turmeric and curcumin may protect patients at risk of CVD through improving serum lipid levels. Curcumin may be used as a well-tolerated dietary adjunct to conventional drugs".

Taken altogether, turmeric and its bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of curcumin in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
