Green Tea, A Natural Alternative For Treatment of Chronic Back Pain

By Kyle J. Norton, Master of Nutrition

Green tea may have a therapeutic and positive effect in ameliorated symptoms and treatment of chronic back pain, some scientists suggested.

Chronic back pain is condition of back pain lasting more than 12 weeks.

It is also considered as musculo-skeletal disorders(MSDs) of the spine caused by various factors, including bone fractures, muscle or ligament injure, arthritis, herniated discs. aging,....

The traditional medicine suggested, acute back pain did not treat correctly during the time of onset may cause chronic back pain in the later days.

According to NIH, "chronic back pain can range in intensity from a dull, constant ache to a sudden, sharp sensation that leaves the person incapacitated. Pain can begin abruptly as a result of an accident or by lifting something heavy, or it can develop over time due to age-related changes of the spine".

The exact causes of back pain are debatable. However, researchers suggested that chronic back pain may also be initiated by some psychological risk factors such as fatigue, sleep disturbance, decreased appetite, and mood changes.

Truly, patients with chronic back pain may experience symptoms of limit movements, reduced back flexibility, strength, and stamina. In severe case, the pain can cause difficulty in carrying out important and enjoyable activities.

Green tea is a precious drink processes numbers of health benefit known to almost everyone in Asia and Western world.

Application of biologically active polyphenol epigallocatechin 3-gallate (EGCG) demonstrated a significant effect in reduced back pain through stimulating anti inflammatory and anti-catabolic activity in patients with intervertebral disc (IVD) disease due to age-related changes in the adult disc in induction of back pain.

According to the study by the Institute for Biomechanics (D-HEST), ETH Zurich, ingestion of green tea EGCG on back pain patients, human IVD cells isolated from patients undergoing surgery due to degenerative disc disease (n = 34) and cultured in 2D or 3D indicated that the phytochemical inhibited levels of inflammatory response activated by IL-1β, a cytokine protein produced by macrophages, with function in contributed to the inflammatory pain and hypersensitivity in the site of infection, observed by the reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR), western blotting, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), immunofluorescence and transcription factor assay.

Further more, application also displayed a strong effect in reduced expression of p38 mitogen-activated protein kinases in mediated inflammatory factors of IL-1β in responded to stress stimuli.

Also, according to the Institute for Biomechanics (D-HEST), in the investigation of the analgesic properties of EGCG, by the von Frey filament test in Sprague-Dawley rats (n = 60), green tea EGCG injection also significantly inhibited the expression of pro-inflammatory mediators as expressed in above and reduced matrix metalloproteinases which have been found to associate to pro-inflammatory cytokines, chemokines and other proteins in regulation of varied aspects of inflammation and immunity.

Moreover, in the radiculopathic pain component, researchers indicated that EGCG inhibits the inflammation in precipitated back pain through modulation of the activity of IRAK-1 in glucose metabolism and insulin sensitivity in skeletal muscle and p38, c-Jun N-terminal kinases (JNK) and nuclear factor NF-κB in responded to stress stimuli in mediated production of pain related pro inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1β.

Some researchers postulated that back pain may also be induced by muscle degeneration and impairment of nerve injury, leading to increased levels of reactive oxygen species in induced tissue apoptosis.

In crushing of the sciatic nerve induced back pain in tested animal, application of green tea EGCG improved motor function in the toe spread and foot positioning and gain in the percentage motor deficit.

More importantly, EGCG expressed a significant effect in recovery of sensory innervation in neuropathic pain-like syndrome and improvement of muscle tissues from injured limb with severe histopathological alterations at the end of week 3 post-surgery in treated animals.

According to the RT-PCR assay, EGCG treatment also normalizing the Bax/Bcl-2 ratio. Abnormal ratio of the Bax/Bcl-2 ratio has been found to associate in induction of nerve cell apoptosis as well as inhibited levels of p53 with function in regulated the cell death cycle at days 3 and 7 post-surgery.

These results demonstrated important effects of green tea EGCG in enhanced functional recovery, protected muscle fibers from cellular death, and improved morphological recovery in skeletal muscle after nerve injuries.

Taken together, green tea and its bioactive component epigallocatechin 3-gallate (EGCG) may be considered as functional food in reduced back pain caused by physical damage of the spine and injured nerve cells. Intake of green tea supplement should be taken exceptional care as some cases of liver acute toxicity have been reported in medical literature.

Herbal Bearberry Leaf Normalizes High Blood Pressure in Vivo, Scientists Find

By Kyle J. Norton, Master of Nutrition

Herbal Barberry may be considered as a functional food and natural alternative in the prevention and treatment of high blood pressure quickly with no adverse effects, some scientists suggested.
High blood pressure or hypertension is a medical condition characterized by abnormally high blood pressure.

Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps out blood.

The normal range of blood pressure is 120 over 80. The number in the top is systolic blood pressure, and the bottom is called the diastolic blood pressure.

Researchers do not know the exact causes of hypertension. However, researchers do know that certain preventable risk factors such as smoking, overweight or obese, physical inactivity,.... and excessive alcohol drinking are associated to increase risk hypertension.

Prolong period of raising the pressure of the hear can lead damage of the body in many ways.

Uncontrolled high blood pressure can lead to stroke heart disease by damaging and weakening your brain's blood vessels, a blood clot in the arteries.

An unhealthy diet high in salt, sugar, process products, genetic mutation, aging, family history,... and long-term stress also have a substantial impact on the onset of hypertension.

Dr. Kim EJ, the lead author in the study of the dietary effect in patients with borderline hypertension, suggested, " a short-term (12 weeks) lifestyle intervention had positive effects on blood pressure control and weight reduction in the subjects, but not on their blood levels of adipokines. It is interesting that the blood level of baseline leptin was negatively associated with the changes in blood pressure after this short-term intervention"(3).

The results showed that long-term dietary intervention should have a strong impact on keeping blood pressure in check.

Adipocytes found in the obese population may contribute to the high prevalence of hypertension.

Leptin, a chemical compound in the blood plays a critical role in regulation and arterial hypertension
Conventional blood pressure medications have undoubtedly prevented many deaths from heart disease in the past 30 years, but they can induce serious side effects, including common gastrointestinal discomfort and psychological symptoms,

Lifelong intake of hypertension medicine can cause erectile dysfunction.

If you take the medicine in a long-term, please make sure you discuss the side effects with your doctor.

Bearberries are 3 species in the genus Arctostaphylos, belongings to the family Ericaceae, native to northern North America, Asia, and Europe.

The herbs have been used in traditional medicine as diuretic agents and to treat urinary problems, including bladder infections, kidney infection, kidney stone,.... and pelvic pain.

The Chemicals Ingredients
It contains arbutin, ursolic acid, tannic acid, gallic acid, some essential oil and resin, hydroquinones tannins, phenolic glycosides,..... and flavonoids.

With the aim to find the possible hypotensive activity of aqueous extract of Vaccinium Arctostaphylos leaves, the Shiraz University of Medical Sciences conducted an experiment of rats with two-kidney, one-clip hypertension.

All Rat were subjected to a sham operation of the placement of Plexiglass clip on left renal arteries.

After four weeks of surgery, renal artery clipped rats were either injected intravenously with different doses of the extract at 10, 25, or 75 mg/kg or normal saline.

The mean blood pressure and heart rate were measured before and 20, 40 and 60 minutes after vehicle or drug administration, researchers found that

* Group given normal saline has a significantly higher mean blood pressure, heart, and right kidney weights, lower left kidney weight and significantly indifferent heart rate.

* Treatment group with the injection of the extract at 75 mg/kg exerts a reduction of the mean blood pressure at 20, 40 and 60 minutes after administration without changing the heart rate.

* However, groups treated with doses of but 10 or 25 mg/kg show an insignificant change of mean blood pressure compared to group administrated with the extract at 75 mg/kg.

These results suggested that bearberry leaf extract has a potential in reduced blood pressure in a dose-depended manner.

Dr. Khalili A, the lead author at the final report, wrote, "... at a higher dose the extract did have hypotensive activity without changing the heart rate".

Truly, the Laboratoire de Pharmacognosie study of Arctostaphylos uva-ursi and hydroalcoholic extracts suggested that the test substances may process a pharmacological effect in reduced blood pressure through increasing urine flow and urinary sodium excretion in vitro.

Taking all together, herbal bearberry and its extract may be considered as functional food for treatment of high blood pressure.

However, further data collection on large example size and multi-centers studies performed with human consumption of the herbal leaf extract during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of bearberry hypotensive possibilities.

Detoxification: Coffee, The Beverage Which Detoxes Our Body Against Chemo-Drugs, Radiation and Chemicals Toxins, Scientists Say

Kyle J. Norton (Master of Nutrition, All right reserved)
Coffee and coffee caffeine may have a profound and positive effect in detoxification of genotoxicity, caused by chemo-drugs, radiation and environment chemicals toxins, some scientists suggested.

Genotoxicity is activity of substances that can cause alternation of DNA of healthy cells to promote irregular cells growth. In other words, genotoxicity is an action that induces cancers.

Genotoxins are gene mutagens which have the property of genotoxicity,  including radiation and chemical toxins.

Coffee, a popular and social beverage all over the world, particular in the West, is a drink made from roasted bean from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.

In rat liver and primary hepatocytes, regular intake of coffee daily illustrated a enormous effect in cellular antioxidant defenses through regulating exhibited enzymes involved mRNA and protein expression.

The study also suggested that coffee and coffee caffeine through expression of detoxifying enzymes GSTs and AKR(in cellular detoxification) also demonstrated a significant activity in reduced risk of genotoxicity and cytotoxicity caused by injection of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1).

Dr. Cavin C, ther lead author said, " the coffee-mediated stimulation of the Nrf2-ARE pathway resulting in increased endogenous defense mechanisms against electrophilic but also oxidative insults further support that coffee may be associated with a protection against various types of chemical stresses".
(Please note that Nrf2-ARE pathway is an indicator and modulator of oxidative stress)

Other, in the evaluated L5178Y mouse lymphoma cell line to assess modulatory effects of coffee against genotoxicity induced by N-methyl-N-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine (MNNG), researchers found that
* 3 doses of instant coffee caffeine injection displayed a decrease in genotoxicity following co-treatment of mouse lymphoma cells.

*. Coffee caffeine pre-treatment or co-treatment exhibited significant antigenotoxic effects against MNNG(an environmental carcinogen that causes DNA mutation) expression.

* Both caffeinated and decaffeinated instant coffee demonstrated a similar effect against genotoxicity in the experiment samples.

Dr. Abraham SK, the lead authors said, " Results from three or five independent experiments demonstrated significant protective effects of caffeinated instant coffee against MNNG-induced DNA damage in the comet assay, mutation at the Tk locus and chromosomal damage in the cytokinesis-block micronucleus test".

The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH), in the study of protective effects of coffee against somatic mutation and mitotic recombination induced by chemo drugs, cyclophosphamide (CPH)(, mitomycin C (MMC) and urethane (URE), using standard (ST) and high bioactivation (HB) crosses of the wing spot test in Drosophila melanogaster assays, suggested that in dose depending, coffee injection showed a strong effect in the genotoxicity of URE in the ST and the genetically susceptible HB cross as well as the genotoxicity caused by MMC application.

Dr. Abraham SK, the lead researcher said, "The magnitude of the protective effects of coffee against these three genotoxins was independent of the genotype of the larvae used for treatment, that is it was independent of the bioactivation capacity of these larvae".

The collective information showed a definitive support in used of coffee and coffee caffeine as functional food in reduced risk against genotoxic expression, including side effects of chemo medicine used in treatment of multi types of cancers.

Infectious Diseases: Herbal Fennel, The Natural Alternative to Antibiotics With No Side Effects

By Kyle J. Norton, Master of Nutrition

Fennel may be the next natural antibiotics used for treatment of diseases caused bacterial infection with no side effects, some researchers suggested.

Although most micro bacteria are harmless, some are pathogenic.

Most common bacterial pathogens that cause human diseases are Staphylococcus aureus and group A β-hemolytic streptococci.

According to statistic provided by the World Health organization, approximately, 50,000 men, women and children are dying from infectious diseases every day world wide.

Some researchers suggested that over span decades or centuries, the epidemiological transition provides the central narrative of global health, including a reduction in mortality and creation of larger and older populations in which the main causes of illness are chronic infectious diseases.

Although, in comparison to the third world, the prevalence of infectious diseases in the UK has reduced dramatically over the last century, the rate of infectious diseases caused by pathogen still have a strong and negative impact in major health, social and economic issues.

Each year in UK, infectious diseases was found to cause 576 of days lost due to disability, out of 1000 population, according to statistic reported by Somerset Intelligence.

Most common symptoms of infectious diseases include fever, diarrhea, fatigue, tiredness, muscle aches,..... coughing. However, signs and symptoms may vary, depending on the pathogen, causing the infection.

Fennel is a species of Foeniculum Vulgare, belonging to the family Apiaceae (Umbelliferae), native to the shores of the Mediterranean. It is now widely cultivated all around the globe to use as food and herb.

In the study to examine 3 different essential oils from grown cultivars of Egyptian fennel, researchers found that according to chromatography/mass spectrometry analysis, all chemical compounds isolated from 3 essential oil processing a strong antioxidant activity in inhibited pathogenic bacteria including two species of fungi, two species of Gram negative and two species of Gram positive bacteria.

Further analysis also suggested that the efficacy of compounds isolated from essential oil from 3 species of fennel was attributed to its free radical scavenging, anti lipid peroxidation and metal chelating properties.

Additionally, in the observation of essential oils antioxidant activity from Foeniculum vulgare commercial aerial parts and fruits isolated by hydrodistillation, researchers at the Universidade do Algarve conducted an experiment, using different distillation times (30 min, 1 h, 2 h and 3 h), and analyzed by GC and GC-MS in isolated chemical compounds from obtained fennel essential oil.

According to the analysis of the agar diffusion method. trans-Anethole (31-36%), alpha-pinene (14-20%) and limonene (11-13%), the main components of the essentials oil isolated from F. vulgare dried aerial parts, and exerted a significant anti bacterial activity compared to methyl chavicol (= estragole) (79-88%) dominant in the fruit oils.

In DPPH method, according to measurement of  oxidative stress, plant essential oils showed better antioxidant activity compared to the fruits oils.

Dr, Miguel MG, the lead author wrote at the end of the experimental report, "None of the oils showed a hydroxyl radical scavenging capacity > 50%, but they showed an ability to inhibit 5-lipoxygenase. The essential oils showed a very low antimicrobial activity. In general, the essential oils isolated during 2 h were as effective, from the biological activity point of view, as those isolated during 3 h".

These results suggested that the effect of chemical compounds in inhibited pathogenic bacteria is isolated time dependable. Only those isolated less than 2 hours are process strong anti bacterial capability.

Strawberries, The Healthy Fruit Which Protects Cell Membranes Integrity Against Lipid Peroxidation in Induction of Chronic Syndromes and Diseases, Researchers Reveal

Kyle J. Norton (Master of Nutrition, All right reserved)

Strawberries may be the next natural whole used as inhibitor for treatment of  syndromes and diseases caused by over expression of lipid peroxidation, the process which free radical steal molecules from the lipids of the cell membranes to induce cells damage.

Lipid peroxidation occurred naturally in small amount in the body. In healthy individual, the process generated by ROS is neutralized by antioxidants produced in the host tissue.

However, over expression of lipid peroxidant can cause imbalance of the ratio of free radicals and antioxidants, weakening the antioxidant enzyme in induction of oxidative stress, a leading cause of numbers of chronic diseases, including diabetes,.... and cardiovascular disease.

More precisely, over expression of free radicals is characterized by inflammation or cell injury hydroxyoctadecadienoic acids (HODEs), markers of disease involving oxidative stress of low density lipoproteinomes (LDL) at 10-100 higher concentration in compared to LDL from healthy individuals.

Epidemiological studies also found that the effect of selected dietary factors plays an essential role of lipids in induction of oxidative stress and antioxidant defenses. Increase intake of antioxidant vitamins C (ascorbic acid) and E (alpha tocopherol) and the type of fatty acids (mono- and poly-unsaturated) may have a strong implication in reduced over expression of lipid peroxidation.

Truly, lipid peroxidant is a double edge sword, on one hand, under normal condition, it exerts physiological and protective function as signaling molecule stimulating gene expression and cell survival.  And on the other hand, in the over expression environment, the process plays a cytotoxic role in inhibiting gene expression and promoting cell death.

Cholesterol is needed for our body to build cell walls, make hormones and vitamin D, and create bile salts that help you digest fat. However too much of it can be dangerous because cholesterol cannot dissolve in your blood.

The special particle called lipoprotein moves this waxy, soft substance from place to place.

If you have too much low density lipoprotein LDL, overtime over expression of lipid peroxidation can cause cholesterol  building up in your arterial walls, leading to  arterial blockage induction of heart attack and stroke.

According to the study by the Università Politecnica delle Marche, stawberry processes high content of essential nutrients and beneficial phytochemicals, such as major antioxidants anthocyanin and ellagitannins which has been found to inhibit ROS in initiation of cytotoxic attack of the cell membrane, a leading cause of lipid peroxidants.

Highest concentrations of anthocyanins were found from ripe strawberry in compared to unripe one.

Furthermore, the study of strawberry flavonoids in extertion of potent antioxidants and anti-inflammatory activity, researchers conducted a test of freeze-dried strawberry powder (FSP) properties of lowering fasting lipids and biomarkers of oxidative stress and inflammation at four weeks in compared to baseline.

In the total of 16 female enrolled in the study, 3 features of metabolic syndrome with waist circumference >35 inches, triglycerides > 150 mg/dL, fasting glucose > 100 mg/dL and < 126 mg/dL, HDL <50 mg/dL, or blood pressure >130/85 mm Hg).

Participants were given two cups of the strawberry drink daily for four weeks with each cup had 25 g FSP blended in water. Biomarkers of oxidative stress and inflammation were measured using ELISA techniques. Plasma ellagic acid was measured using HPLC-UV techniques.

At the end of the study, researchers found that
* Total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol levels were significantly lower at 4 weeks versus baseline (-5% and -6%, respectively, p < 0.05),

* Lipid peroxidation in the form of malondialdehyde and hydroxynonenal (-14%, p < 0.01) was also lower significantly.

* Interestingly, Oxidized-LDL showed a decreasing trend at 4 weeks

These results suggested that short-term supplementation of freeze-dried strawberries exert hypocholesterolemic effects and decrease lipid peroxidation in women with metabolic syndrome.

Moreover, in the examine the effects of strawberry major phytochemicals on the radicals DPPH and OH with doese ofrom 50-100 μl extract in vitro, researchers showed that
* Injection of strawberry deceases activity of lipid peroxidation (LPO) through intercepted levels of level of Malondialdehyde (MDA)-2-thiobarbituric acid in compared to baseline.

* Administration of strawberry extract, depending on the decrease in LPO formation, also preserved amounts of other antioxidants such as oleic acid and linoleic acid.

Dr. Ozsahin AD, the lead author at the Bitlis Eren University, after taking into accounts of other co and con founders, said, "Consequently, it has been confirmed that the strawberry fruit that has a scavenging effect against the radicals prevents that lipid peroxidation in in vitro environment"..

DPPH is an organic chemical compound 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl composed of stable free-radical molecules,

The findings strongly suggested that strawberries processed numbers of antioxidants may be used as functional food in inhibited free radicals over expression causes of lipid peroxidants, a leading cause of chronic syndromes and diseases.

Banana, The Fruit Which Promotes Gut Microbiota and Bowel Movement Against Acute and Chronic Constipation, Medline Studies Show

Kyle J. Norton (Master of Nutrition, All right reserved)
Banana may be used as functional foods in prevention and treatment of acute and chronic constipation, some scientists suggested.

Constipation is natural condition characterized by infrequence or hard to pass of bowel movements

People with chronic constipation may experience symptoms of abdominal pain, bloating,.... and a feeling of not completely passed the bowel movement.

Untreated long term constipation may increase risk of hemorrhoids, anal fissure or fecal impaction, the most common complications of patient with chronic condition.

Acute constipation is a condition which starts suddenly and lasts for a 3 days or less due to prolonged inactivity, medication, dehydration, or missing a bowel movement. And chronic constipation is condition of a stool frequency of less than three per week that lasts several months.

Believe or not, constipation is the most common digestive complaint in the North America.

The prevalence of chronic constipation ranges from 2-28%, affecting 63 million people in North America . Some studies suggested that prevalence of constipation increases with age and is more common in women than men.

The exact causes of constipation are still under evaluation. However, some researchers suggested that medical condition such as colon cancer, colon damage, diabetes, thyroid disorders, Parkinson’s disease, pregnancy and medications such as pain medications (narcotics), blood pressure medications (calcium channel blockers), anti-seizure medication, and antispasmodics are common risk factors  of constipation onset.

Furthermore, aging which has a strong implication in structural lesions of the colon may also associate to increased risk of the condition.

Dr. Lazebnik LB, in the final report of chronic constipation conducted by using data collected from 1189 randomly selected subjects older than 18 year old, said, "... low level of dietary fiber and fluid intake and low physical activity (in male younger 55 y.o. with increased body mass index)".

Banana is the common name of a genus of tropical herbaceous plants. It can grow from 3 to 9 m and belongs to the family of the lily and the orchid.

In the study of fructooligosaccharides (FOS) which are oligosaccharides occurred naturally in banana, researchers found that
* Dietary FOS are not hydrolyzed by small intestinal glycosidases and reach the cecum structurally unchanged.

* FOS are considered as soluble dietary fibre which processes a strong effect in prevention of risk acute constipation and treatment of chronic constipation.

* Furthermore, FOS are increasingly included in food products and infant formulas due to their prebiotic effect stimulate the growth of nonpathogenic intestinal microflora

* Moreover, consumption of banana fructooligosaccharides (FOS) not only increases fecal bolus and the frequency of depositions, but at a dose of 4-15 g/day given to healthy subjects, the oligosaccharides also will reduce constipation, one of the growing problems of modern society, and newborns during the first months of life.

These results suggested that banana containing major compound of fructooligosaccharides (FOS) may be used as functional foods in improved digestive system in absorbed nutrients and fluids and promoted bowel movement in prevention and treatment of acute and chronic constipation.

Unfortunately, in the investigated the significance and risk factors of bowel obstruction caused by the consumption of wild bananas (BOWB) in Laos, researchers at the SFE Medical Project suggested that while banana fruits are considered as digestive enhancer, intake of wild banana which often containing seeds can cause bowel obstruction, including constipation.

According to the study, out of participants of 227, 91.2% had eaten WB; 46.3% had also eaten the seeds and 45.4% knew of complications resulting from eating WB; 42.3% were aware of the complications of ingesting the seeds (constipation [37.9%], appendicitis/abdominal pain/vomiting [2.6% each] and bloated stomach/death [1.3% each]).

The findings suggested that eating banana seeds is associated to increase risk of digestive dysfunction.

Taking altogether, the edible part of banana, containing major active compound fructooligosaccharides (FOS) may be used as alternative treatment for patients with acute and chronic chronic without inducing side effects.

People who are at infrequent bowel movement may want to add a portion of banana into their diet for preventive measure

Some types of banana in the tropical world contain seeds. Please don't eat them, if you find one

Asparagus, The Miracle Anti Diabetes and Diabetes Complications Functional Food, Scientists Say

Kyle J. Norton, Master of Nutrition

Asparagus may have a potential and profound effect in reduced risk of diabetes in patients with no diabetes and diabetic complications in patients with diabetes, some studies suggested.

Diabetes is a condition characterized by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate the glucose.

The actual causes of diabetes are debatable. As researchers do not know why some people without genetic mutations are susceptible to disease development, while other do not.

Researchers believed that onset of diabetes type 2 is associated to a set of risk factors. According to the retrospective cohort study, using the data of 8337 adolescent respondents from Add Health (1994-2008) including 5131 non-Hispanic Whites, 1651 non-Hispanic Blacks, 1223 Hispanics, and 332 American Indians/Alaska Natives lead by College of Medicine, Washington State University,

* Pre-diabetes and diabetes were more prevalent in non-Hispanic Blacks (55% and 12%, respectively) than in American Indians/Alaska Natives (43% and 11%),

* Higher body mass index and family history of diabetes were associated with higher risk of pre-diabetes and diabetes.

* Female sex was associated with lower risk of pre-diabetes in compared to male counterpart.
Furthermore
* Physical inactivity, sedentary behaviors, or fast food consumption are associated to independent and preventive risk factors that induce early onset of prediabetes and diabetes.

Most people with prediabetes do not experience any symptoms. However, untreated diabetes or  diabetes that do not manage properly, may lead to serious complications of cardiovascular diseases, kidney damage, nerve, foot and eye damage, skin wound that can heal,....... and dementia such as Alzheimer's disease.

Asparagus is a flowering plant belongings to species the genus Asparagus, native to the western coasts of northern Spain, north to Ireland, Great Britain, and northwest Germany, northern Africa and western Asia.

The vegetable have been used from early times as a vegetable and medicine, because of its delicate flavor and diuretic properties.

In Streptozotocin (90 mg/kg) injected in 2-d-old Wistar rat pups to induce non-obese type 2 diabetes, researchers found that rats treated with a methanolic extract of A. officinalis seeds (250 and 500 mg/kg per d) expressed lowering fasting blood glucose, improved serum insulin, total antioxidant status and qualitative and quantitative in β-cell function(1) in compared to placebo group.

Additional observation also discovered that the methanolic extract also exerts a significant effect in reduced complications of kidney disease by inhibiting renal hypertrophy, polyuria, hyperfiltration, microalbuminuria and abnormal changes in the renal tissue(1).

Furthermore, asparagus extract enhanced production of antioxidants from the host in neutralize the unbalanced ratio of antioxidants and free radical in initiated oxidative stress(1) induced by injection of Streptozotocin (90 mg/kg) effectively.

Moreover, according to the study by Smt. Kashibai Navale College of Pharmacy, oral administration of ethanolic extract of Asparagus racemosus (EEAR) at a dose level of 100 and 250 mg/kg daily for 4 weeks, significantly reduced the expression of streptozotocin-induced early diabetic nephropathy in compared with control group(2).

Dr. Somania R, the lead researcher said, " A. racemosus treatment significantly decreased plasma glucose, creatinine, ..... total cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Renal hypertrophy,....and abnormal changes in the renal tissue".

These efficacy can be attributed to the extract's anti-diabetic effects by improving insulin secretion and β-cell function(2).

Interestingly, the 21 days continuous administration of aqueous extract of asparagus by-product (AEA) to examine the hypoglycaemic effect in a streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rat model indicated(3), found
* Rat treated with the extract showed to decrease fasting serum glucose and triglyceride levels but markedly increased body weight and hepatic glycogen level.

* In an oral glucose tolerance test, both the blood glucose level measured at 30, 60 and 120 min after glucose loading and the area under the glucose curve showed a significant decrease after AEA treatment.

* The extract also exhibited the hypoglycaemic and hypotriglyceridaemic effects in preventing diabetic complications associated with hyperglycaemia and hyperlipidaemia(3).

Taking altogether, there is no doubt that many aspects have contributed to the effectiveness of asparagus in reduced risk of diabetic complications and treatment of diabetes, but large amount of asparagus extract intake should only be prescribed by related field specialist.

However, further data collection on large example size and multi centers clinical studies and trials performed with human consumption of the whole food during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of asparagus anti diabetes possibilities.
