During the last stage of the menstrual cycle, normally a layer of endometriosis lining on the inside of the uterus is expelled, known as menstruation blood, instead some of the endometriosis tissues grow somewhere in the body to cause endometriosis. Endometriosis also react to hormone signals of the monthly menstrual cycle, by building and breaking up tissues and eliminating them through menstrual period.

Vitamin B5 is also known as pantothenic acid, played an important role in the forming of co-enzyme A and critical in the metabolism and synthesis of carbohydrates, proteins and fat. Vitamin B5 has a chemical structure formula of C9H17NO5.

Most women with endometriosis were found to have low levels of vitamin B5 during the menstrual cycle for what ever reason. Without enough vitamin B5 in a woman's body, it causes:
1. A weakened immune system
Since vitamin B5 is necessary in the metabolism of carbohydrates, it helps to generate energy for our body's cells. Without enough levels of vitamin B5, our body's immune system is weakened and is dangerous for the forming of free radicals and cell abnormalities(2)(3).

2. Poor circulation
Our liver is the first line of defense by secreting bile into the digestive system to produce good cholesterol, which helps to inhibit the bad cholesterol in the arteries(4). Without enough vitamin B5, bad cholesterol is left unchecked causing difficulty for blood circulation(5).

3. Increased risk of over-active uterine muscles
Liver helps in metabolism of fat. Without enough vitamin B5, it causes hormone imbalance(9) in the prostaglandins family leading to over-reaction of uterine muscles which in turn causes abdominal pain.

4. Increased tension of nervous system
Fat and protein are important for nourishing the cells in the nervous system. Low levels of vitamin B5 weakens the brain cell's function. This leads to symptoms of endometriosis such as anxiety, mood swings, and depression(1).

5. Increased risk of allergic reaction
Insufficient vitamin B5 in our body causes deficiency in co-enzyme A which is necessary for our body to react to sudden substances that enter our body, causing violently allergic reactions(8).

6. Acne
Fatty acid metabolism becomes less efficient and the individual is more prone to have acne(6)(7).

7. Hormonal imbalance
Besides helping to reduce acne, vitamin B5 also interacts with other members of the vitamin B complex by increasing the function of the adrenal glands which is necessary to balance hormones and promote normal growth of the body(5)(9).

Obesity Complication of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

 By Kyle J. Norton

Some articles have been used as references in medical research, such as international journal Pharma and Bio science, ISSN 0975-6299.

Obesity is defined as a medical condition of excess body fat has accumulated overtime, while overweight is a condition of excess body weight relatively to the height. According to the Body Mass Index(BMI), a BMI between 25 to 29.9 is considered over weight, while a BMI of over 30 is an indication of obesity. According to the statistic, 68% of American population are either overweight or obese.

How do calculate your BMI index
BMI= weight (kg)/ height (m2)
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is defined as a condition of numbness, tingling, weakness, or muscle damage in the hand and fingers, as a result of the pressure on the median nerve.

D.  How Obesity relates to Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
1. According to the study of|The relationship of obesity, age, and carpal tunnel syndrome: more complex than was thought?" by Bland JD., posted in PubMed, researchers found that increased BMI is a significant independent risk factor for CTS in patients under the age of 63 years, but is less important in older patients. Patients over the age of 63 years have a different pattern of risk factors for CTS than younger patients. This suggests that CTS in the elderly population may have different underlying pathogenetic mechanisms.

2. In study of "Carpal tunnel syndrome" by Aroori S, Spence RA., posted in PubMed, researchers indicated that Carpal tunnel syndrome is one of the most common peripheral neuropathies. It affects mainly middle aged women. In the majority of patients the exact cause and pathogenesis of CTS is unclear. Although several occupations have been linked to increased incidence and prevalence of CTS the evidence is not clear. Occupational CTS is uncommon and it is essential to exclude all other causes particularly the intrinsic factors such as obesity before attributing it to occupation.

3. According to the study of "Hand syndromes associated with diabetes: impairments and obesity predict disability" by Redmond CL, Bain GI, Laslett LL, McNeil JD., posted in PubMed, researchers found that In adults with hand syndromes associated with diabetes, disability was related to impaired muscle function and carpal tunnel syndrome. Obesity and overall physical functioning influenced hand disability, particularly in women.

4. In abstract of the study of "Assessment of body mass index and hand anthropometric measurements as independent risk factors for carpal tunnel syndrome" by Sharifi-Mollayousefi A, Yazdchi-Marandi M, Ayramlou H, Heidari P, Salavati A, Zarrintan S, Sharifi-Mollayousefi A., posted in PubMed, researchers found that The mean values of BMI, wrist ratio and shape index were significantly higher in all CTS patients and females compared to controls, whereas in males only BMI and wrist ratio were higher. The patients in the mild severity subgroup had a significantly lower age and wrist ratio. BMI, wrist ratio and shape index were found to be independent risk factors of CTS development in all patients and females. Our study showed BMI, wrist ratio and shape index as independent risk factors for CTS. These findings are of potential anatomical and clinical importance and outline the risk factors of anatomical malfunction of the wrist in CTS.

5. According to the study of "Individual risk factors for carpal tunnel syndrome: an evaluation of body mass index, wrist index and hand anthropometric measurements" by Boz C, Ozmenoglu M, Altunayoglu V, Velioglu S, Alioglu Z., posted in PubMed, researchers concluded that Differences in the hand length/height ratio were not statistically significant in female and male CTS patients compared to their controls and it was not found to be an independent risk factor for CTS. Our study confirmed BMI as an independent risk factor for CTS in both genders. Hand and wrist anthropometrics were found to be independent risk factors for CTS in females, but not in males.

6. In abstract of the study of "Epidemiology of carpal tunnel syndrome in women of childbearing age. Findings in a large cohort study" by Vessey MP, Villard-Mackintosh L, Yeates D., posted in PubMed, researchers indicated that The most significant positive association between an existing disease and CTS was menstrual disorders (p=.001). Additional similar associations existed for orthopedic conditions and gastrointestinal tract symptoms. The relationships between CTS and OC use, menstrual disorders, and obesity may be related to pressure on the median nerve due to fat or edema near the carpal tunnel.

7. Etc.

Treatments of Obesity and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

1. According to the study of "Medical and non-medical correlates of carpal tunnel syndrome in a Taiwan cohort of one million" by Tseng CH, Liao CC, Kuo CM, Sung FC, Hsieh DP, Tsai CH., posted in PubMed, researchers found that Patients were predominantly women (65.6% vs. 47.7% in the control group) and older (40 and above, 62.6% vs. 36.2%). Rheumatoid arthritis was found to be the most significant comorbidity associated with CTS, followed by gout, hypertension, diabetes, obesity, uremia, and acromegaly. For younger group age ≤39, the association of these comorbidities was stronger, and hypothyroidism and vitamin B(6) deficiency were additional comorbidities...., these disorders may aid in removing possible causes of CTS. This is the first report on the effect of aging on probable CTS risk factors. How factors associated with aging contribute to the development of CTS remains to be determined.

2. In a study of "Concurrent medical disease in work-related carpal tunnel syndrome" by, Atcheson SG, Ward JR, Lowe W., posted in PubMed, researchers concluded that Routine patient histories and record reviews are inadequate for proper evaluation of work-related CTS. Unrecognized medical diseases capable of causing CTS are common. Studies asserting an association between occupational hand usage and CTS are of questionable validity unless they prospectively account for confounding disease and obesity.

3. Etc.

Endometriosis also react to hormone signals of the monthly menstrual cycle, by building and breaking up tissues and eliminating them through menstrual period.

Vitamin B3 , also known as niacin, is a water-soluble vitamin. Besides being usedto treat pellagra caused by dietary lack of vitamin B3 and protein, it also has been known to be effective in treating endometriosis because women with endometriosis are found to have vitamin B3 deficiency. It has a chemical compound formula of C6H5NO2.

1. Hormone synthesis(2)
Vitamin B3 is found to help the manufacturing of hormones such as cortisone and the sex hormones such as  estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, and other steroid hormones in a woman's body. Besides helping to inhibit levels of bad estrogen that causes menstrual cramps during menstrual cycle, it also helps to balance the prostaglandin hormone which causes over-active uterine muscles(1).

2. Digestive system(3)(4)
Deficiency of vitamin B3 is generally found in women with endometriosis during menstruation. It may be caused by the inability of the digestive system in breaking down food particles. Intake of vitamin B3 helps to re-balance the hormones that cause menstrual cramps.

3. Metabolism of carbohydrates(5)(6)(7)
Besides helping to provide energy for our body in metabolism of carbohydrate through bile secretion,

4. Circulatory stimulation(7)
Vitamin B3 also helps in stimulation of the circulatory system by reducing the level of bad cholesterol (LDL) from the arteries in some people.

5. Nervous system(5)
Vitamin B3 is important for the healthy activity of the nervous system by providing the metabolism of protein and fat which are nutrients necessary for brain cells resulting in reduced symptoms of endometriosis such as depression, anxiety, and irritation.

Vitamin B2 is water soluble, also known as riboflavin. It has a chemical compound formula of C17H20N4O6. Like many other vitamin B complexes, it plays an important role in providing energy to our body by the metabolism of fat, carbohydrates and protein.

1. Red blood cell formation
Vitamin B2 includes the active co-enzyme forms of flavin mononucleotide (FMN) and flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD) that helps to transport vitamin b2 into the red blood cell as well as maintaining the red blood cell formation(1)

 2. Strengthens the immune system(2)
Vitamin B2 is an antioxidant that helps to rejuvenate the immune system caused by toxins accumulated in the liver that helps to maintain our body's function fighting against any abnormality of cell growth including abnormal endometrial cells(3) and to maintain normal cell division or cell growth which decreases the risk of cell abnormality and prevent endometrial cells to grow somewhere else in the body excluding the endometrium.

3. Migraine(6)(7)(8)
The Riboflavin that is found in Vitamin B2 has shown beneficial results by assisting in decreasing the time as well as the frequency in which one gets a migraine headache due to symptoms of endometriosis during menstruation.

4. Nervous system(4)
Vitamin B2 can assist with alleviating stress as well as reducing symptoms of depression that are brought on by digestive disorders that generally affects women with endometriosis during the menstrual cycle(5).
