Omega 3 Fatty Acids, the Promising Adjunct Therapy for Heart Failure Patients

By Kyle J. Norton

The heart is a four-chambered, hollow muscle and a double-acting pump located in the chest between the lungs is a muscular organ in the human body.

The heart formed an important part of the circulatory system that pumps blood through the blood vessels to nourish the body and assist in the removal of metabolic wastes.

According to the statistic provided by the American Heart Foundation, on average, an American dies of CVD every 38 seconds. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) accounted for 840,678 deaths in the US in 2016 and the condition also claims more lives each year than all forms of cancer and chronic lower respiratory disease combined

In 2016, cardiovascular diseases cause the death of 2,303 deaths each day, in the US.
Heart failure is a medical condition characterized by insufficiently maintaining blood flow to meet the body's needs.

Most common symptoms of heart failure are
* Shortness of breath and excessive tiredness are caused by the congestion in your lungs in the process of inhaling oxygen and exhaling carbon dioxide.
And

* Leg swelling is a condition caused by fluid to back up in your lungs and in other parts of your body such as your ankles.

Believe it or not, approximately 600, 000 Canadian are living with heart failure or 16% of the entire population.

Omega-3 fatty acids are phytochemicals in the class of lipids, found abundantly in deepsea fisk, dark-green leafy vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, etc.

The three main components of Omega-3 fatty acids are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of heart diseases, researchers examined the effects of long-chain omega-3 fatty acid supplementation on omega-3 levels on chronic heart failure (CHF).

According to the results of the analysis of a recent clinical trial that was used to develop a Markov model to project clinical outcomes while capturing relevant costs and patient quality of life,
* In addition to standard therapy, n-3 PUFA vs. placebo increased lifetime direct costs by £993 (≈€1150), with an additional quality-adjusted life expectancy of 0.079 quality-adjusted life years (QALYs), and mean lifetime costs of £12,636 (≈€14,600) per QALY gained.

* Probabilistic sensitivity analyses suggested a 60% likelihood of n-3 PUFA being regarded as cost-effective versus placebo at a willingness-to-pay threshold of £30,000 (≈€34,600) per QALY gained.

In other words, the cotreatment of Omega 3 fatty acids with standard therapy improves the quality of life, life expectancy and induced cost-effective in the treatment of heart failure patients.

Moreover, researchers said, "By currently accepted standards of value for money in the UK; the addition of n-3 PUFA to optimal medical therapy for patients with heart failure is likely to be cost-effective".

Taken altogether, Omega-3 fatty acids may be considered an adjunct therapy for the treatment of heart failure, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Ashwagandha Inhibits Colorectal Cancer by Inducing Mitochondrial Dysfunction

By Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is the class of diseases associated with cell growth disorderly and uncontrollably due to the alternation of DNA.

Most cases of cancer begin in the cells on the surface of the inner lining tissues of the organ or gland. At the early stage, most cancers are asymptomatic.

Cancer cells at the advanced stage also can travel a distance away from the original site to induce secondary metastasis.

According to the statistics provided by the American cancer society, in 2018, 1,735,350 new cases were diagnosed, representing more than 4,700 new cancer diagnoses each day.

The lifetime probability of being diagnosed with cancer is 39.7% for men and 37.6% for women.

Compared to other types of cancer, colorectal cancer is a medical condition caused by cell growth irregularly in the tissue of the colon or rectum due to the alternation of cells DNA.

According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, in the US, colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed in both men and women compared to other types of cancer.

The lifetime risk of colorectal cancer is 1 in 22 (4.49%) for men and 1 in 24 (4.15%) for women.

Approximately, 140,000 cases of colorectal cancer were diagnosed in the US in 2018. Cancer also causes the death of over 50, 000 people, representing 8.3% of total cancer death.

Being overweight or obese. smoking, physical inactivity, excessive alcohol drinking, the increased in age, family and personal history, genetic preposition are some of the prevalent risks of the disease.

Mitochondrial dysfunction is a condition affecting the organelles that generate energy for the cell.

Mitochondria are the cell that converts the food molecules into the energy for the body tissues' needs. Mitochondria produces 90 percent of the energy for body functioning.

On finding a potent compound that processes the anti-cancer activity, researchers examined the effects of Withaferin A (WA), an active steroidal lactone derived from the herbal plant Withania somnifera cytotoxic induced mitochondrial dysfunction on colorectal cancer (CRC).

Ashwagandha also is known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, Middle East, and the Mediterranean.

The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered as anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.

In vitro, according to the flow cytometry, withaferin A, induced accumulation of ROS in human colon cancer cells to cause apoptosis and cell cycle arrest by inducing the mitochondrial dysfunction that affects the production of energy for the cancer cells' needs.

Furthermore, on HCT-116 and RKO cells, WA exerted a cytotoxic effect on a dose-dependent manner.

Moreover, the anti colorectal cancer cells property of WA was attributed to the ROS production and decreased mitochondrial membrane potential, accompanying with mitochondrial dysfunction.

Based on the finding, researchers said, " These results strongly indicated that WA directly inhibits cell growth and induces apoptosis in CRC cells through ROS-mediated mitochondrial dysfunction and JNKs pathway, and WA may be a promising potential candidate for therapeutic application of CRC".

Taken altogether, Ashwagandha processed abundantly withaferin A may be considered a functional herb for the treatment of CRC by inducing mitochondrial dysfunction of the cancer cells, pending to the result of larger sample size and multicenter study

Beta-Sitosterol Suppresses the Cervical Cancer Initiation

By Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is a class of chronic diseases associated with irregular cell growth in the tissues of the affected organ.

Cervical cancer is a malignant neoplasm of the cervix uteri or cervical area caused by abnormal cells growth with alternation of cells DNA.

The cervix is the lower part of the uterus that opens at the top of the vagina. The cervix acts as a transition area for the vaginal lining.

Most cases of cervical cancer start in the cell on the surface of the inner lining tissue of the cervix. At this stage, most women with cervical cancer do not experience any symptoms.

At the advanced stage, invasive cancer can induce symptoms of abnormal bleeding, pain during sexual intercourse, increased vaginal discharge. If the tumor has suppressed the nearby nerve cells, cervical cancer can also cause localized severe pain.

According to the American Cancer Society's, in 2014, 12,360 new cases of invasive cervical cancer were diagnosed with the death of 4,020 patients.

The risk of cervical cancer is higher in Hispanic women followed by African-Americans, Asians and Pacific Islanders, and whites.

Other risk factors associated with cervical cancer are  HPV infection, sexual activity, smoking, giving birth many times, infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV, history of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and long-term use of oral contraceptives/

However, most women with some of the risk factors have never developed cervical cancer.

According to the statistic, the 5-year survival rate for women with invasive cervical cancer is 92%. and approximately, 46% of women with cervical cancer are diagnosed at an early stage.

Beta-Sitosterol is a phytochemical in the class of Phytosterols, belongings to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in avocados, rice bran, wheat germ, corn oils, fennel, peanuts, soybeans, hawthorn, basil, buckwheat. etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the prevention and treatment of cancer, researchers examined the effects of β -sitosterol, a natural product isolated from traditional Chinese herbs, on Caski and HeLa cervical carcinoma cells.

According to the experimental analysis, the application of β-sitosterol on Caski and HeLa cells showed an inhibitory effect on cell proliferation by reducing the expression of PCNA associated with antigens in cell cycle division.

The increased expression of p53 that suppressed the levels of tumor cells mRNA levels and decreased amounts of HPV E6 transcripts produced by the tumor cells were also found in the β-sitosterol treatment of Caski and HeLa cells.

Furthermore, the treatment of Caski and HeLa cells also exhibited tumor cell apoptosis by inducing the loss of cell surface microvilli, increased electron density of cell membranes, and decreased organelles.

Based on the evidence, researchers said, "treatment of Caski and HeLa cells with β-sitosterol significantly suppressed the expression of genes involved in cell proliferation and oncogenic transformation, while augmenting the expression of genes involved in apoptosis and tumor suppression".

Taken altogether, beta-Sitosterol may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of cervical cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of beta-Sitosterol in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Broccoli's Sulforaphane Supplementation Has No Effects on Neutrophilic Airway Inflammation

By Kyle J. Norton

Respiratory Disease is medical conditions, that affect the breathing organ and tissues including Inflammatory lung disease, Obstructive lung diseases, Restrictive lung diseases, Respiratory tract infections, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, alveoli, the nerves and muscles breathing, etc.

Acute inflammation is a natural response of the immune system to protect the human body against harmful stimuli and pathogens.

Acute information is the first phase of injection. At this phase, after sensing the body injury by the central nerves system, the immune first line of defense stimulates the production of blood platelets to the cover the site of damage and pro-inflammatory to kill off pathogens that try to enter the body through the wound or damaged tissue.

Acute inflammation usually receded after a few days or weeks depending on the size and damage. However, if all pathogens were not eradicated after 3 to 8 weeks, the immune system will compromise, leading to chronic low-grade inflammation, a leading cause of chronic illness.

The most common symptoms of acute inflammation occurred with a short period of time such as hours is pain, redness, immobility, swelling, and heat.

Conventionally, depending on the types of acute inflammation, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may be prescribed to alleviate the pain by counteracting an enzyme that contributes to inflammation.

Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease affecting the airway of the lung with recurring symptoms, such as wheezing, chest tightness, shortness of breath, and coughing.

The disease affects people of all ages, and mostly starts during childhood. In the study of 463,801 children aged 13-14 years in 155 collaborating centers in 56 countries.

Neutrophilic airway inflammation in asthma is a complication associated with the whole spectrum of asthma severity, ranging from mild-to-moderate to severe uncontrolled disease, compared to neutrophilic inflammation that occurs mostly in more severe asthma.

Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belong to the family Brassicaceae. The veggie has large flower heads, usually green in color and the mass of flower heads surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant on the continent of Europe.

On finding a potential plant that protects the lung activity, researchers examined the effects of sulforaphane (SFN), a naturally occurring isothiocyanate found in cruciferous vegetables on neutrophilic airway inflammation.

The study included male rats that were divided into the control group fed the AIN-76 diet, and the BSEx group fed the AIN-76 diet containing BSEx for 10-days.

On airway inflammation via induction of the transcription factor NF-E2-related factor 2 (NRF2), supplementation of SFN with broccoli sprout homogenate did not induce the expression of antioxidant genes in healthy human subjects.

In an ozone-exposure model, the supplementation showed no effects in the protection against neutrophilic airway inflammation.

In other words, dietary sulforaphane supplementation did not promote the production of antioxidant enzymes in the tested model through its anti-inflammatory activity

Based on the finding, researchers said, "supplementation of SFN with broccoli sprout homogenate is not a promising candidate for large-scale clinical trials targeting airway inflammation".

Taken altogether,  broccoli may be considered liver detoxed functional food, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Beta-Sitosterol, the Anti-Inflammatory Phytochemical

By Kyle J. Norton

Inflammation is a natural response by the immune system to protect the body against the invasion of stimuli or foreign pathogens.

Acute inflammation is a short-term condition caused by tissue injury, leading to pain, redness, swelling, and heat to the affected area, depending on the size of the injury. Some patients with acute inflammation may also experience the symptom of loss of function.

In acute inflammation, the white blood cells on the first line of defense of the immune system after sensing the danger of an infection in the body through a message from the brain stimulate the production of platelets to cover the site of injury or damage and inflammatory cytokines to kill off all pathogens before they can cause harm to the body.

Most cases of infection are stopped at the acute phase. The wound or injury is slowly recovered.

Chronic inflammation is a low-grade inflammation caused by the inability of the immune system to eliminate the invasive pathogens that occurred in the acute phase of infection.

Any inflammation that lasts more than 8 weeks is considered chronic inflammation.

Believe it or not, worldwide, 3 of 5 death are results from chronic inflammatory diseases like stroke, chronic respiratory diseases, heart disorders, cancer, obesity, and diabetes.

Anti-inflammation is the process that inhibits inflammation or swelling without affecting the immune property to curb foreign pathogens.

Conventionally, the most common use of anti-inflammatory medicines is over counter aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, Nuprin) and other prescription NSAIDs.

Beta-Sitosterol is a phytochemical in the class of Phytosterols, belongings to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in avocados, rice bran, wheat germ, corn oils, fennel, peanuts, soybeans, hawthorn, basil, buckwheat. etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the prevention of diseases involved in oxidative stress, researchers investigated the anti-inflammatory activity of β-sitosterol (BSS) isolated from Moringa oleifera in two cell lines.

According to the experimental analysis, over a dose range of 7.5 to 30 μM, BSS in the medium as nanoparticles with diameters of 50 ± 5 nm suppressed the secretion of inflammatory factors from keratinocytes and macrophages induced by ROS and proteins associated with the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8,

The application of BSS significantly reduced the expression of NLRP3, a key component of NLRP3 inflammasomes that participates in the production of the pro-inflammatory cytokines interleukin-1β (IL-1β) and IL-18, and inhibited the activation of caspase-1, the precursors of the inflammatory cytokines interleukin 1β and interleukin 18.

NF-κB, the protein associated with the signaling of inflammation in macrophages was also partially inhibited by BSS.

Taken altogether, beta-Sitosterol may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of inflammation, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of beta-Sitosterol in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Cranberry, the Antioxidants Functional Fruit

By Kyle J. Norton

Free radicals are highly unstable atoms. Internally, free radicals are produced by our body cell metabolism. Externally, free radical can enter our body from the environment sources, such as the air we breathe, the food we eat and the water we drink.

In other words, any chemicals compounds or molecules which process an oxygen atom can be free radicals in a chemical reaction with other atoms.

According to epidemiological studies, free radicals are dangerous to human health in excessive amounts. Overexpression of free radicals induced oxidative stress has been found to damage the lipid, and protein and induce the alternation of healthy cell DNA.

Antioxidants are stable atoms that inhibit oxidation induced by free radicals.

Out of all damages caused by overexpression of free radicals, some researchers suggested that lipid peroxidation induced by free radicals has a strong implication in the pathogenesis of various disorders and diseases.

Oxidative stress can either be caused by overexpression of free radicals or depletion of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host. The condition has been found to induce cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes.

In a healthy person, antioxidants produced by the body are more than enough to counter the expression of free radicals. However, in people with a weakened immune system, the intake of dietary antioxidants regularly can be helpful.

Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belongings to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia.

Because of its health benefits, cranberry has been cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, researchers examined the effect of cranberry (V. macrocarpon) antioxidant activity.

According to studies,
* Vaccinium oxycoccos fruit as a whole group is a valuable source of antioxidants and other biologically active substances.

European cranberry fruit processed a strong antioxidant property due to rich in polyphenolic compounds anthocyanins (12.4–207.3 mg/100 g fw), proanthocyanins (1.5–5.3 mg/100 g fw), and flavonols, especially quercetin (0.52–15.4 mg/100 g fw).

Small cranberry showed a significant antioxidant effect against various biological protection including urinary tract protection (proanthocyanidins), antibacterial and antifungal properties (quercetin, proanthocyanidins, anthocyanins), cardioprotective (proanthocyanidins) and anticancer activities (proanthocyanidins).

Based on the findings, researchers said, "Taking into account various beneficial effects of small cranberries on human health, also in folk medicine, the consumption of these fruits and their products is widely recommended.".

Taken altogether, cranberry may be considered a remedy for the enhancing antioxidant activity, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Cabbage Kills Pancreatic Cancer Cells in Vitro

By Kyle J. Norton

The pancreas is an oblong flattened gland in the digestive and endocrine system located in the abdomen.

By secreting pancreatic juice to the small intestine, the pancreas breaks down carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids. Traditional Chinese medicine views the pancreas as a vital organ that is responsible for the absorption of foods' qi and nutrients before passing them to other organs to nourish our bodies.

The pancreas plays a major role in regulating blood glucose levels by producing insulin.
Type 1 diabetes occurs when the pancreas does not make enough or any insulin. Type 2 diabetes develops when the body cannot use insulin correctly.

Pancreatic cancer is a chronic condition characterized by cell growth irregularly in the tissues of the pancreas.

According to statistics, every year, approximately, over 55,000 adults in the United States are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, accounting for 3% of all cancers and 7% of all cancer deaths.

The survival rate of pancreatic cancer even diagnosed early is very low compared to other types of cancer. The 5-year survival rate at stage IA pancreatic cancer is only14%.

The most common risk factors of pancreatic cancer are similar to those of common cancers, including age, family history, gender, ethnicity, smoking, being overweight or obesity and certain medical conditions such as diabetes.

Cabbage is a species of Brassica oleracea belongings to the family Brassicaceae (or Cruciferae), native to the Mediterranean region along the seacoast. The veggie has a short stem of which is crowded a mass of leaves, usually green but in some varieties, it may be red or purplish.

With an aim to find natural food in the prevention and treatment of tumors, researchers investigated the anticancer effects of kimchi prepared by the standard Baechu cabbage and Amtak Baechu cabbage.

4 different kimchi samples that were prepared for this study: (1) the standard Baechu cabbage and dry salt treatment method (SK-D); (2) the Amtak Baechu cabbage and dry salt treatment method (AK-D); (3) the standard Baechu cabbage and brine solution treatment method (SK-B); and (4) the Amtak Baechu cabbage and brine solution treatment method (AK-B).

In human pancreas cancer cells (Capan-2) and human liver cancer cells (HepG2), both cancer cells exposed to AK-D and AK-B showed a significant increase in cell growth inhibition, compared yo SK-D and SK-B (p < 0.05).

At 2.0 mg/mL, the inhibition of Capan-2 cells was more than doubled after treatment with AK-B and AK-D compared with SK-B and SK-D, but was only 1.2 times in HepG2 cells.

AK-D and AK-B treatment exhibited apoptosis and cell cycle arrest by a significant increase of p21 levels associated with cell cycle regulation.

AK-B exerted a higher cytotoxic activity compared with AK-D and the anticancer effects were more apparent in Capan-2 cells than in the HepG2 cells.

Based on the results, researchers wrote, "...kimchi made with Amtak Baechu cabbage and treated with brine solution (AK-B) had a superior anticancer potential against both types of cancer cells, with the effects being greater in pancreatic cancer cells compared with liver cancer cells".

Taken altogether, kimchi made with Amtak Baechu cabbage may be used for the prevention and treatment of pancreatic cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
