#Antioxidant #Indicaxanthin from Cactus Pear Fruit Processes Anti-Hypercholesterolemia and Anti-Hypercholesterolemic Complications Activities

Kyle J. Norton

Hypercholesterolemia is a condition characterized by abnormally high levels of cholesterol in the bloodstream.
In other words, the condition is caused by either overexpression of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) or low levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL).

Cholesterol, a waxy substance produced by the liver or the dietary in moderate amounts source plays a critical to aiding digestive function in absorbing nutrients, build strong cell membranes, and producing steroid hormones and vitamin D. However, excessive amounts in the blood have been found to induce plaque built-up on the arterial wall, leading to heart disease and stroke.

Similar to high blood pressure, people with hypercholesterolemia are asymptomatic. Patients with familial hypercholesterol may experience symptoms of chest pain with activity. xanthomas, and cholesterol deposits around the eyelids.

The most common complications associated with uncontrolled hypercholesterolemia are carotid artery disease, coronary heart disease, including angina or heart attack, peripheral artery disease, and stroke.

According to the statistics provided by the CDC, hypercholesterolemia is a major risk factor of heart disease, a leading cause of death in the US. In the US, approximately, 71 million American adults (33.5%) have high low-density lipoprotein (LDL), or “bad,” cholesterol, and only 1 out of every 3 adults with high LDL cholesterol has the condition under control.

Sadly, only 50% of people with hypercholesterolemia are getting treatment.

Out of many risk factors associated with the risk of hypercholesterolemia, some researchers suggested that widespread obesity due to aging may have a strong impact on the increased incidence in the US.

Dr. Parini P, the lead scientist wrote, "Plasma cholesterol levels increase with age, as does the incidence of coronary heart disease" and "the relative deficiency in growth hormone (GH), which occurs with aging, contributes to the development of the age-related hypercholesterolemia, because GH has beneficial effects on cholesterol metabolism".

However, researchers continued, "Growth hormone (GH), treatment strongly reduced the hypercholesterolemia in 18-month-old animals. We conclude that the age-dependent increase of plasma cholesterol in rats can be reversed by the administration of GH, presumably through the pleiotropic effects of this hormone on lipoprotein metabolism".

In other words, aging in the promotion of hypercholesterolemia induced complications can be preventable by the regulation of lipoprotein metabolism.

Indicaxanthin is phytochemicals in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments of Betacyanins, belonging to the group of Betalains found abundantly in beets, chard, etc.

In finding a potential compound for the improvement of cholesterol file, researchers examined the effect of Indicaxanthin effects on toxic oxysterols in hypercholesterolemia.

Where toxic oxysterols in hypercholesterolemia have been found to cause suicidal death of human erythrocytes or eryptosis associated with red blood cell programmed death.

According to the tested differentiation, indicaxanthin (Ind) from cactus pear fruit, incubated with isolated healthy human erythrocytes exposed to an oxysterol mixture for 48 h in a concentration range (1.0-5.0 μM) prevents membrane phosphatidylserine (PS) externalization and cell shrinkage in a dose-dependent manner.

In other words, indicaxanthin (Ind) protects the PS that regulates the production of thrombin, the central regulatory molecule of blood coagulation caused by overexpression of ROS and depletion of antioxidant enzymes and production of inflammatory cytokine-induced by an oxysterol mixture without affecting the erythrocyte redox environment or other parameters.

In ex vivo, indicaxanthin (Ind) at 5 μm, induced the spiking levels of normal human blood with the oxysterol mixture for 48 h induced eryptosis, by reducing the production of ROS and decreased levels of GSH.

Furthermore, eryptosis, the suicidal erythrocyte death, leads to cell shrinkage and cell membrane scrambling and red blood cell programmed death to cause vascular tissue injury was inhibited by 5 μm-Ind.

These results suggested that eryptotic erythrocytes that contribute to thrombotic complications in hypercholesterolemia were prevented by the application of indicaxanthin.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "the positive effects of diets containing Ind on erythrocytes in hypercholesterolaemic subjects".

Taken altogether, indicaxanthin may be considered a remedy for the prevention of hypercholesterolemia complications, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Lycopene Inhibits Levels of Stress Markers Associated with the Onset of #GastricUlcer through Its Antixodant Activity, Researchers Find

Kyle J. Norton

The stomach located between the esophagus and the small intestine is a muscular, hollow and important organ of the digestive tract.
The stomach plays a critical role in assisting the digestive system in digesting foods by secreting acid and enzymes.

Gastric or stomach ulcer is a condition of localized tissue erosion in the lining of the stomach.

The most common symptoms of gastric ulcers are abdominal pain, bloating, septic shock, dyspepsia, and blood in the stool due to bleeding, unintended weight loss loss of appetite, and gastrointestinal discomforts.

Some patients may also experience symptoms of mood disorder, leading to reduced quality of life in many patients.

The imbalance between stomach acid and upper GI tract mucosa is the main cause of the condition onset associated with the use of certain medications, including aspirin, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, Helicobacter pylori infection, and chronic gastritis.

Epidemiologically, periodontal disease, aging, smoking, long-term use of mechanical ventilation and critical illness are at an increased risk of gastric ulcer.

Dr. Haruka Fujinami lead scientist in the examination of long-term intake of conventional medicine in the risk of gastric ulcer wrote, "The rates of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection were significantly low (P = 0.039), while the proportion of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) users and vascular disease significantly increased over the period studied (P = 0.034 and P = 0.04, respectively)".

And, "It’s found that the primary cause of peptic ulcer bleeding changed from H. pylori infection to use of NSAIDs over the 7-year period of study. It seems that the number of low-dose aspirin users has increased with the increase in the proportion of vascular disease".

The results strongly suggested if you are a long-term user of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, your risk of gastric ulcer is significantly higher.

Lycopene is a phytochemical found in tomato in the class of carotenoid, a natural pigment with no vitamin A activity found abundantly in tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables, such as red carrots, watermelons, and papayas,

Tomatoes provide about 80% of the lycopene in the world diet. In plants, lycopene protects the host against excessive photodamage and performs various functions in photosynthesis.

In finding a potential compound for the treatment of ulcers, researchers examined the protective effects of lycopene on an indomethacin-induced gastric ulcer model.

The study included a total of 42 adult male Wistar rats induced by gastric ulcer by divided into six groups of seven animals as follows: control, indomethacin, lansoprazole, lycopene 10 mg/kg, lycopene 50 mg/kg and lycopene 100 mg/kg.

According to the tested analysis, the % Tail DNA and Mean Tail Moment in the gastric ulcer group were significantly decreased by the treatment of lycopene at the dose of 100 mg/kg, compared to other treatment groups.

Furthermore, the treatment of lycopene at the dose of 100 mg/kg not only decreased the increased levels of malondialdehyde and myeloperoxidase in the gastric ulcer group but also increased the antioxidant enzymes in the gastric tissue without affecting the levels of catalase.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "lycopene might have a protective effect against indomethacin-induced gastric ulcer and oxidative stress in rats".

Taken together, lycopene found in tomatoes may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of gastric ulcer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of lycopene in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Cranberry Combined with #Dandelion Reduce Symptoms and Improve Key Indicators of Renal Failure in Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), Researchers Reveal

Kyle J. Norton

The kidneys formed part of the secretary system are two bean-shaped organs located against the back muscles in the upper abdominal area.

The kidneys play a critical role in filtering wastes from the breakdown of active muscle and the food you eat and removing extra water from the blood through urinary secretion.

Furthermore, the kidneys also maintain the fluid in the body by secreting extra water through urinary secretion.

Kidney dysfunction reduces the body's ability to clean and filter extra water from your blood, leading to fluid retention and high blood pressure in the early stage. Believe it or not, people with a kidney function of 10% do not show signs of kidney dysfunction and symptoms.

In other words, kidney disease often has no symptoms until a very advanced stage.

Chronic kidney disease is a gradual loss of kidney function over time. Chronic kidney failure is the end stage of chronic kidney disease which has been found in a high number of patients with diabetes, high blood pressure, and other disorders.

Acute kidney dysfunction or acute kidney failure is a result of insufficient blood flow to the kidneys such as renal hypertension. These types of kidney dysfunction can be cured if the causes are found.

Most cases of acute kidney dysfunction may be associated with toxins accumulated in the kidney organs, leading to the condition of nephrotoxicity.

Nephrotoxicity is a condition of kidney function caused by exposure to toxic chemicals or overdose of certain medications.

Some researchers suggested that people with diabetes are at an increased risk of chronic kidney disease, particularly in those with hyperglycemia.

The National Kidney Foundation wrote, "Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney failure, accounting for 44% percent of new cases. Current research suggests that control of high blood pressure is a key factor in slowing this disease. The strict control of blood sugar levels and reduction of dietary protein intake is also important. Treatment to prevent diabetic kidney disease should begin early — before kidney damage develops".

Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia. Because of its health benefits, cranberry has been cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.

In finding a potential compound for the treatment of renal disease, researchers examined the effect of Vaccinium macrocarpon (Cranberry)and Taraxacum officinale (Dandelion)  on spontaneous feline chronic kidney disease.

The study included 34 neutered cats, suffering from stage II-III chronic kidney disease and diagnosed according to the International Renal Interest Society guidelines randomly assigned to receive either a control diet (n = 17) or a nutraceutical diet (ND; n = 17) containing 60-80% hydrolyzed proteins, 20-40% minerals and active substances (Lespedeza spp. 0.0588, Vaccinium macrocarpon 0.0371%, and Taraxacum officinale 0.0231%.) for 90 days.

According to the tested analysis, both showed a significant effect on the reduced symptoms.

Cats that received the ND exerted a significant decrease in creatinine, blood urea nitrogen, total proteins, and aspartate aminotransferase. The elevated levels of the aforementioned parameters have been found persistently in patients with chronic kidney disease.

Furthermore, urine turbidity score, color score, and total proteins associated with the progression of CKD in cats that received the ND were also decreased substantially.

Collectively, researchers after taking other factors into account said, "An ND based on Lespedeza spp., Vaccinium macrocarpon, and Taraxacum officinale improves key indicators of renal failure in cats affected by chronic kidney disease".

Taken altogether, cranberry may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of CKD, particularly in combination with dandelion and Lespedeza spp, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#GreenTea #EGCG Reduces Weight Gain, Plasma Glucose, Insulin Level, Liver and Kidney Weight in Obesity, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Green tea is found to consist of an anti-obesity function, a recent study by a popular institute suggested.
Green tea, considered a functional food, has a number of health benefits and has been reported by several renowned research and studies. However, as yin in nature herbal medicine or food, long-term injection of large amounts may obstruct the balance of yin-yang, inducing "yin excessive syndrome" or "yang vacuity syndrome" including weakened immunity and painful cases of GERD,... according to traditional Chinese medicine's Yin-Yang theory. But adding a slice of ginger will do the trick.

Obesity is a medical condition of excess body fat accumulated over time. A person is considered obese if excess body weight relative to height is over 30 in the BMI index.

According to the University of the Punjab, Epigallocatechin gallate, a polyphenol found in tea plants exhibited anti obesity effect through modulation of thePPAR[gamma] pathway in metabolism involved fat cells/adipose tissues.

In an animal study, the chemical constituent stopped the adipogenic cell differentiation through different proteins and transcription factors in the expression of adipocyte formation which is considered as fat cell development in contribution to obesity.

Dr. Javaid MS, the lead author in the study said, "Docking analysis of PPAR gamma and epigallocatechin gallate demonstrated that epigallocatechin gallate binds with PPAR gamma at its active site and blocks its activity".

Also, in animals induced by a high-fat diet, green tea Epigallocatechin 3-gallate (EGCG), exerted anti-obesity effects through reduced plasma glucose and alleviated complications of diabetes by attenuating advanced glycation end products (AGEs) formation involved proteins or lipids expression.

Dietary EGCG tested in C57BL/6 mice induced by a high-fat diet with or without ECGC for 17 weeks and compared to a control group placed on a low-fat diet for the same period, also showed a significantly reduced weight gain, plasma glucose, insulin level, liver and kidney weight, which can be seen in obesity in compared control mice.

Importantly, green tea Epigallocatechin 3-gallate (EGCG fed mice ovally decreased the levels of AGEs(advanced glycation end product) in both plasma and liver while inhibiting the receptor for AGE (RAGE) expression of activating Nrf2, antioxidant response, and enhanced anti-oxidative stress ratio of GSH/GSSG.

Other searchers opinionated the effect of green tea in reduced fat/adipose tissue accumulation in obese subjects is a result of the pro-oxidant action of EGCG, in the de-activated cellular production of reactive oxygen species, through the indication of adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase in suppressed gene and protein expression of enzymes and transcription factors involved in adipogenesis and lipogenesis(fat and disposed metabolism).

Taken together, green tea with all the phytochemicals may be used as an anti-obesity functional food to help control hyperglycemia, reduce weight, and alleviate diabetes complications.

#Fennel Shows a Significant Effect on Primary Dysmenorrhea, Scientists Find

Kyle J. Norton

Fennel may have a potential and positive effect in reducing pain through its anti-antispasmodic property, some scientists suggested.
Anti-antispasmodic activity is an action that relieves, prevents, or lowers the incidence of muscle spasms, especially those of adnominal muscle in the uterus and smooth muscle such as in the bowel wall.

Certain hormones that have the function of controlling muscle contraction and relaxation are found to be associated with the intensity of muscle spasms, if overexpressed.

Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is a plant species of the genus, belonging to Apiaceae (Umbelliferae), native to the Mediterranean.

The herb has been used in traditional and herbal medicine as a warming, carminative, antispasmodic, and antidepressant agent to stimulate the appetite, ease indigestion, soothe coughing, reduce intestinal spasms, regulate the menstrual cycle, and relieve PMS,...

In the findings, the natural antispasmodic ingredients with little or no side effects, Dr. Shamkant B. Badgujar, and colleagues launched an investigation to compare doses of 2.5 and 10.0 mL/L of an alcoholic extract with other Germanic medicinal plants, including Melissa officinalis, Rosmarinus officinalis, Mentha piperita, Matricaria chamomilla, Carum carvi, and Citrus aurantium.

The experiment was carried out on guinea pig ileum by using acetylcholine and histamine as spasmogens.

After taking into all account co and confounders, researchers found that application-tested doses of alcoholic extract of the fruits of Foeniculum vulgare exert a significant anti-antispasmodic activity by inhibiting the acetylcholine and histamine-induced guinea pig ileal contractions.

Further analysis of the effects of n essential oil obtained from the fruits of Foeniculum vulgare at the doses of 25 μg/ and 10 μg/mL, researchers discovered that the injections also demonstrated a similar as of the extract but through the inhibition of the hormone oxytocin and prostaglandin activities.

Oxytocin and prostaglandin are hormones with a function that causes contraction of the muscles of the uterus. Overcontraction of the muscles of the uterus is a major cause of abdominal pain in women.

Additionally, the comparison of the antispasmodic property of 4 different herbal medicine that has been used in traditional medicine for the treatment of abdominal pain in Swiss mice, including fennel according to the guidelines of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) also found that all herbs used in the testing display a substantial reduction of abdominal pain without inducing any adverse effects.

In the experiment carried out in the guinea pig, the application of fennel also showed significant relaxation in different agonists like histamine and acetylcholine-induced contractions in guinea pig ileum.
Interestingly, in the study to investigate whether oral fennel drop has any effects on primary dysmenorrhea, the occurrence of painful menstrual cramps of the uterus, researchers conducted an experiment on sixty college students who suffer from primary dysmenorrhea.

The participants were randomly assigned to two groups and followed up for two cycles. The treatment group was given fennel drop and the control group was given non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or oral contraceptive pills.

After assessing the final report, researchers suggested that both groups exert a clinically significant effect in reducing pain. However, the comparison of bleeding severity in the study group before and after the intervention on the first day, second day, third day, fourth day, and fifth day was 0.948, 0.330, 0.508, 0.583, and 0.890, respectively.

Taken together, fennel may be considered a secondary and therapeutical form of treatment in reducing pain caused by overexpression of hormones that control muscle contraction through its antispasmodic activity.

#Freeze-dried Instant #Coffee Promotes Antioxidants and Induces Weight Loss, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Compared to herbal medicine, food therapy even takes longer to ease symptoms, depending on the stages of the treatment that directly address the cause of the disease.
Coffee, a popular drink may be an excellent beverage for induced weight loss and weight management, a reviewed study by a respectable university revealed.

Coffee, emerging as a popular and social beverage all over the world, particularly in the West, is a drink made from roast beans from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.

Weight loss is an intentional reduction of the total body mass, according to the definition stated by medicine, health, or physical fitness experts.

According to the University of Exeter, in the reviewed data from human clinical trials, differentiated 8 eligible trials, green coffee extract (GCE) have moderated or significant effect in reduced weight loss in compared to placebo.

In the rat model, 48t rats were fed with either a control diet with water (C) or a control diet with a coffee solution (CF). At the end of week 4, animals in each dietary group were subdivided into three exercise groups: before exercise (BE), during exercise (DE), and after exercise (AE), The group fed with coffee solution showed a significantly reduced total weight compared diet with water group.

The efficacy of dietary coffee in decreased total weight loss may be attributed to the extract function in stimulating the production of antioxidants in suppressed free radical expression. as well as increasing total cholesterol.

Dr. Choi EY the lead author said, "Freeze-dried instant coffee can promote activities of antioxidant enzymes and induce weight loss but also aggravate the plasma cholesterol profile in rats".

Additionally, in the comparison of the daily consumption of coffee and caffeinated beverages between 494 weight loss maintainers and 2129 individuals from the general population, significantly more cups of coffee are found in the weight loss maintainers than in the general population group.

Other researchers insisted that the efficacy of coffee in induced weight loss, probably due to activities of caffeine and other chemical constituents of coffee, such as chlorogenic acid and quinides.

Collective findings suggested that coffee may have a potentially therapeutic property in weight deduction. However, some reviewed trials were associated with a high risk of bias. poor methodological quality, therefore, more studies are necessary to confirm the promising validity, some researchers suggested.

#GreenTea #Catechin #Extract Reduces the Risk of #ProstateCancer, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Prostate cancer is a condition in which the cells of the prostate have become cancerous, causing abnormal cell growth with the possibility of spreading to distant parts of the body. Most prostate cancers are slow-growing and prostate cancer may be detected during physical (rectum) exams.

Green tea may be used as a functional food in the prevention and treatment of prostate cancer, a renowned institute study suggested

Green tea, a precious drink processes number of health benefits known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world. However, as yin in nature herbal medicine,or food, long term injection of large amounts may obstruct the balance of yin-yang, induced "yin excessive syndrome" or "yang vacuity syndrome" including weaken immunity and painful case of GERD,... according to traditional Chinese medicine's Yin-Yang theory. Adding a slice of ginger will do the trick.

According to the Fu Jen Catholic University, New Taipei City, catechin nanoemulsion preparation showed the highest inhibition of growth of PC-3 tumor cells, with concentration being 15.4 μg/mL and 8.5 μg/mL

The inhibition of prostate cancer cell line is observed in cell cycle arrest by regulated proteins involved in cell cycle division, namely cyclin A, cyclin B, cyclin-dependent kinase 2, and cyclin-dependent kinase 1 expression, and activated cell apoptosis and survival.

Dr. Tsai YJ, the lead author said, "Catechin extract and nanoemulsion could induce apoptosis of PC-3 cells through decrease in B-cell lymphoma 2 (BCL-2) expression and increase in cytochrome c expression( in the induction of apoptosis) for activation of caspase-3, caspase-8, and caspase-9 (involved cell death)".

Furthermore, in the recruited 404 PCA cases and 395 controls from the same hospital who completed data on habitual tea consumption, including green, oolong, black, and pu'er tea regular green drinkers have a significantly reduced risk of prostate cancer development.

The review of the inverse relation of tea drinkers and risk of prostate cancer has shown explicitly:
1. A total of 32 cases and 50 controls reported habitual green tea drinking, showing an adjusted OR of 0.60 (95% confidence interval (CI): 0.37, 0.98).
2. A moderate excess risk was observed among the habitual pu'er tea drinkers (OR=1.44, 95% CI: 1.02, 1.91).
3. A significantly lower intake of EGCG was observed among cases (54.4 mg) than the controls (72.5 mg).

Additionally, the differentiation of 7 observational studies and 3 randomized controlled trials was retrieved from Cochrane Library, PubMed, ScienceDirect Online, and hand searching. the database, also reveals an interest correlated incidence of PCa decreases with each 1 cup/day increase of green tea.

According to the study, "higher green tea consumption was linearly reduced PCa risk with more than 7 cups/day and green tea catechins were effective for preventing PCa".

Collectively, green tea consumption is associated inversely with the risk of PCA but the injection of a large amount of green tea supplement should be taken with care to prevent toxicity.
