#CaffeinatedCoffee Protects the Liver Cell Integrity Against the Onset of #LiverDiseases, According to Studies

Habitual caffeinated coffee intake may have the potential of curing Non-Alcoholic Liver Disease, some scientists found.

Non-alcohol fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a chronic medical condition of the fatty liver caused by excessive fat deposited (steatosis) in the liver other than over-consumption of alcohol.

The disease is a common liver disorder found in most developed countries, probably due to over-consumption of carbohydrates which are considered a major stimulus for hepatic de novo lipogenesis (DNL), the esterification of plasma-free fatty acids, such as the American diet.

According to a clinical assessment conducted by the joint study led by Global Clinical Research, " Hepatic de novo lipogenesis(DNL), the synthesis of new fatty acids from non-lipid sources, is thought to play a pivotal role in the development of NAFLD"(4).

Compared to lipids that were defined as soluble substances in organic solvents, including the various types of fatty acids, eicosanoids, fatty alcohols, fatty aldehydes, ...... and hydrocarbons, fatty acids from non-lipid sources are men made substances that do not rely on organic solvents, but use other chemicals to separate the lipids from the rest of the food, including buttermilk fat, beef fat (tallow, suet), chicken fat cream pork fat, (lard),... and stick margarine

Dr. Paglialunga S. the lead author suggested as of today, there is no NAFLD-specific therapeutic agent available. However, pharmaceutical drugs aimed at reducing hepatic fat accretion may prove to be a powerful ally in the treatment and management of this disease(4).

Some researchers also said a chronic metabolic derangement referred to steatosis are directly associated with patients with obesity and type 2 diabetes(4).

According to the statistic, approximately, 80 million of US adults suffer from Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in which 30% to 40% of those patients show no visible signs and symptoms.

According to a retrospective cross-sectional study on patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), hepatitis C virus (HCV), and hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection to determine the effects of coffee intake on a non-invasive marker of liver fibrosis, coffee intake of 2 or more cups per day demonstrated a significantly reduced liver symptom of stiffness, after adjustment for age, gender, smoking, alcohol consumption, in compared to other subgroups.

Additionally, in the review of epidemiological and clinical evidence by the Zhejiang University, researchers suggested coffee intake may have a profoundly reduced severity and risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) prevalence.

In fact, the effect of coffee on attenuated risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) incidence may be also involved other chemical constituents other than caffeine.

Dr. Chen S, the lead researcher suggested said, "Several possible mechanisms underlying coffee's hepatoprotective effects in NAFLD include antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, and antifibrotic effects".

Interestingly, the review of literature published in the database of Medline and Embase up to March 2015, showed that coffee and coffee caffeine intake have a strong impact in protecting the liver against complications of fibrosis incidence.

#Herbal #Chamomile Improves Insomnia Through its Anxiolytic or Sedative Properties, Researchers Say

Intake of chamomile may have a strong and positive effect in preventing and treating insomnia, some scientists suggested.

Insomnia is a chronic sleep disorder characterized by difficulty of falling asleep and/or staying asleep. The condition affects most of the population of older adults due to hormones change that is associated with aging.

Most adults have experienced insomnia sometimes in their life. According to statistics, more than 30% of the population suffers from insomnia, one in three people suffer from some form of insomnia during their lifetime and women suffer from insomnia more often than men.

Some researchers suggested that psychiatric and medical conditions, unhealthy sleep habits, and in a healthy diet and lifestyle, particularly in the use of substances, and/or certain biological factors are major causes of insomnia onset.

Some women in certain stages of the menstrual cycle also suffer from this type of sleep disorder, due to the body's inability to cope with the sudden change of hormone production. Needless to say, insomnia is caused by menstrual pain. According to the National Sleep Foundation poll, 33% of women said, their sleep is disturbed during their menstrual cycles.

In Australia, according to statistics produced by Virtual Medical Center, "Almost 90% of Australians suffer from a sleeping disorder, with 30% experiencing a severe sleeping disorder" and "There are over 70 different defined sleep disorders which result in reduced sleep quantity or reduced sleep quality"(4).

Poor sleep quality in patients who suffer from insomnia may induce symptoms of fatigue, irritability, decreased memory and concentration,..... and malaise.

These results truly have a strongly negative impact on quality of life and work life, resulting in decreased productivity and increased absenteeism.

The use of sleep pills to treat insomnia may be effective, however, according to the Additive Center, "The dangerous effects of sleep medications range from seizures to depressed breathing. Some people also experience allergic reactions from sleeping pills that can cause difficulty breathing, chest pain, nausea, and swelling" "Though rare, people who use sleeping pills may even develop parasomnias. Parasomnias are defined as sleep disorders that include behaviors like sleep-walking, sleep-eating, sleep-sex, sleep-driving, and other potentially dangerous sleep-related activities"(5).

Chamomile is also known as camomile, the common name of many species of daisy-like plants in the family Asteraceae.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as an antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory constituent to treat menstrual cramps and sleep disorders, reduce cramping and spastic pain in the bowels, and relieve excessive gas,..... and bloating in the intestine.

Chamomile is one of the most popular herbs used for sleep disorders in herbal medicine.


According to Dr. Srivastava JK and the research team at the Case Western Reserve University, in the investigation of The dried flowers of chamomile containing many terpenoids and flavonoids that may contribute to its medicinal properties, found that injection in the form of herbal tea consumed more than one million cups per day worldwide may have a significant impact in the treatment of insomnia(1).

In the concerns of chamomile's (Matricaria recutita) efficacy and safety for treating chronic primary insomnia, scientists at the University of Michigan conducted an experiment of 34 patients aged 18-65 years with DSM-IV primary insomnia for ≥ 6 months, showed that application of 270 mg of chamomile twice daily or placebo for 28-days exerts modest benefits of daytime functioning and mixed benefits on sleep diary(2).

Dr. Zick SM, the lead author at the end of the evaluation, said, "Chamomile did show a modest advantage on daytime functioning, although these did not reach statistical significance. Effect sizes were generally small to moderate (Cohen's d ≤ 0.20 to < 0.60) with sleep latency, nighttime awakenings, and Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS), having moderate effect sizes in favor of chamomile"(2).


The efficacy of chamomile in the treatment of insomnia may also be attributed to the anxiolytic or sedative properties in the improvement of sleep, according to the study of traditionally endowed with anxiolytic or sedative properties,(3).

However, Dr. Wheatley D suggested, "its slow onset of effect (2-3 weeks) renders it unsuitable for short-term use (i.e. 'jet-lag'), but it does have profound beneficial effects on sleep architecture (augments deep sleep) that may make it particularly suitable for long-term use and for the elderly"(3).

The findings suggested that chamomile may be used as a functional food to improve insomnia due to the procession of anxiolytic or sedative properties.

#Vegetables' #Phenethyl-isothiocyanate (PEITC) Inhibits #ChemicalToxins through Its Antioxdant Activities, Researchers Say

Phenethyl isothiocyanate (PEITC), a natural product formed from gluconasturtiin in cruciferous vegetables may be the next generation of detoxified natural food against benzene, acrolein, and crotonaldehyde in cigarette smokers.
Detoxification is the process of removing toxic or harmful substances from our bodies.

According to statistics, thousands of new chemicals are registered for use in foods, medications, household products, and lawn-care products, these types of environment toxins also add to the risk of chronic illness in long-term exposure.

Particularly, these chemical substances induced by developmental toxins and neurotoxins exposed to pre- or post-natal babies have never been studied.

The EWG | Environmental Working Group in the article of " A BENCHMARK INVESTIGATION OF INDUSTRIAL CHEMICALS, POLLUTANTS AND PESTICIDES IN UMBILICAL CORD BLOOD" published on July 14, 2005, wrote, “an average of 200 industrial chemicals and pollutants in umbilical cord blood from 10 babies born in August and September of 2004 in U.S. hospitals”(4)

And, "Of the 287 chemicals we detected in umbilical cord blood, we know that 180 cause cancer in humans or animals, 217 are toxic to the brain and nervous system, and 208 cause birth defects or abnormal development in animal tests".

NNK is a tobacco carcinogen, 4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanone is associated increased risk of lung cancer.

In support of the detoxified effect of cruciferous vegetables against body toxins, isothiocyanates from cruciferous vegetables showed to promote Nrf2, a protein in regulated the expression of antioxidant proteins in protected cells against oxidative damage, induced production of cytoprotection by detoxification mechanisms, and excretion of both harmful substances and toxic metals.

Furthermore, in Hepa1c1c7 murine hepatoma cells study of the induction of detoxification enzymes by benzyl isothiocyanate (BITC) and its synthetic N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC) conjugate (NAC-BITC), Dr. Hwang ES said, "BITC and NAC-BITC inhibited Hepa1c1c7 cell growth in a dose-dependent manner. Cell growth was 4.5~57.2% lower in Hepa1c1c7 cells treated with 0.1~10 μM BITC than in control-treated Hepa1c1c7 cells."


Taking together, there is no doubt that cruciferous vegetables have a strong effect in reducing the accumulation of toxic chemicals in the body, particularly in cigarette smokers.

But a further larger sample size and multiple studies are necessary to confirm its viability.

Excessive #Coffee Intake Daily and Regularly Is Associated with The Risk of #BladderCancer, Researchers Say

Coffee consumption may have a strong association with the potential risk of bladder cancer development, some scientists suggested.

Bladder cancer is a medical condition of cell growth irregularly and disorderly in the bladder. Cancer may spread to distant tissues and organs in the later stage.

Depending on the originated and infected tissue, bladder cancer can be classified into 3 types(4), including
* Transitional cell carcinoma
In the early stage of bladder cancer, normal cells become cancerous in the innermost tissue layer of the bladder beginning in cells in the lining of the bladder.

* Squamous cell carcinoma
Cancer begins in squamous cells found in the tissues of the surface of the bladder, due to long-term infection or irritation

* Adenocarcinoma
Cancer begins originates in the glandular tissue of the bladder, including the surface layer of skin, glands, and a variety of other tissue, due to long-term irritation and inflammation.

Deepening to the stage, patients with bladder can experience some of the below symptoms, bladder spasms, blood in urine, frequent urination, pain or burning sensation during urination, pain in the lower back and/or abdomen, reduced bladder capacity, difficulty in urination,.... and common symptoms of loss of appetite and weight.

4 for 4 cups/day, RR=1.01

The findings in both case-control and cohort studies showed a positive association between coffee intake and the risk of bladder cancer.

In nonsmokers, according to the pooled dataset comprises 564 cases and 2929 hospital or population controls enrolled in ten studies conducted in Denmark, Germany, Greece, France, Italy, and Spain. risk of bladder cancer did not increase monotonically with dose but for heavy coffee drinkers of over 10 cups per days, the risk of bladder cancer increases substantially.

Dr. Sala M, the lead author said, "Nonsmokers who are heavy coffee drinkers may have a small excess risk of bladder cancer".

Others, in analyzed a case-control study in two different areas of northern Italy (555 cases and 855 controls), coffee intake and risk of bladder cancer showed that
 compared to nondrinkers (RR: relative risk ratio)
1. RR 1.2 for one cup of coffee per day,
2. RR 1.4 for two,
3. RR 1.5 for three and
4 RR 1.4 for four or more
5. RR 1.5 (0.9-2.4) for decaffeinated coffee.
But in never smoked participants, the risk of bladder cancer increased significantly
1. RR 1.9 for one or two cups per day,
2. RR 1.8 for three and
3 RR 1.5 for four or more

Taken together, there is no doubt that coffee and coffee caffeine consumption have a mild risk in the exhibited incidence of bladder cancer regardless of numbers of cups intake daily and regularly.

However, Due to the small size of the studies, some researchers suggested that a sample size of a clinical trial with multi-centers involved are necessary to rule out or reconfirm the side effect of coffee intake possibility.

Caspase 3 is one of a member of caspases that acts as a crucial mediator in programmed cell death (apoptosis).

In lung metastasis by B16F-10 melanoma cells in C57BL/6 mice, calendula officinalis flower extract reduced the lung tumor nodules by 74% with a 43.3% increase in lifespan, probably through the inhibition of key enzymes involved in processes of metastasis(3).

These results suggested that herbal calendula officinalis and its extracts processed cytotoxic activity in the induction of tumor cells apoptosis by blocking cancer in facilitated growth, invasion, and metastasis.

However, further data collection on large example size and multi-center studies performed with human consumption of whole food during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of herbal calendula anti-cancer possibilities.

Alfalfa may be a potential antimicrobial agent used for the treatment of infection or infectious-related diseases.
The microorganism, first observed by Anton van Leeuwenhoek in 1675 is a class of microscopic organisms, including a bacterium, virus, or fungus.

Believe it or not, single-celled bacteria, algae, protozoa, or multicellular, such as algae and fungi can survive under all types of extreme environments.

And less than 1% of bacteria, can invade and cause infection and diseases.

Although the discovery of human antibiotics is medicines that kill or slow the growth of bacteria, however, overuses of antibiotics has been found to induce microbial resistance to certain drugs.

Dr. Jose M. Munita, the lead author in the study of " Mechanisms of Antibiotic Resistance" said, "Emergence of resistance among the most important bacterial pathogens is recognized as a major public health threat affecting humans worldwide" and " The bacterial response to the antibiotic “attack” is the prime example of bacterial adaptation and the pinnacle of evolution. “Survival of the fittest” is a consequence of immense genetic plasticity of bacterial pathogens that trigger specific responses that result in mutational adaptations, acquisition of genetic material or alteration of gene expression producing resistance to virtually all antibiotics currently available in clinical practice"(4).

In fact, Karunya University in the investigation of the Antimicrobial of Alfalfa(Medicago sativa) in various bacterial strains showed a positive effect of alfalfa seed extract in inhibition of five
bacterial strains namely Bacillus licheniformis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Lactococcus lactis, Klebsiella pneumonia. The efficacy also depends on the concentration of extract with the maximum inhibition seen in 300µg/ml concentration of extract.

There is no doubt that the intake of alfalfa regularly may be beneficiary in reducing the risk and treatment of microbial infection and diseases. But further human trials are necessary.

Color rice may have potential effects in enhanced levels of antioxidants through its antioxidants and stimulation of the natural antioxidant enzymes found in the host tissue, some scientists suggested.

Compared to white rice with the hull, bran layer, and cereal germ removed colored rice contains a similar amount of calories and carbohydrates with only the hull removed.

Therefore, replacing the portion of white rice with color rice in your diet may eventually increase the circulation of antioxidants in your body.

The results of the replacement not only reduce the risk of overexpression of levels of reactive oxygen species in the induction of free radical domino effects but also protect the body against the imbalance of free radicals and antioxidants.

Antioxidants are molecules with a unique function in inhibiting oxidation caused by other molecules.

Oxidative stress is a production as a result of an imbalance of the ratio of antioxidants produced by the body tissue and free radical expression in the body.

In other words, low levels of natural antioxidants in the body may increase the risk of oxidative stress diseases.

Color rice or unpolished rice is a kind of whole, natural grain with varieties of color with only the outermost layer (hull) of the rice kernel removed.

In the study of the extracts from white-, black-, and red-hulled rice prepared by sequential extraction with six different polar solvents to investigate the potential radical-scavenging activities, researchers at the National Agricultural Research Center for Kyushu Okinawa Region found that compared to other extracts isolated, the acetone extract from red-hulled rice exhibits a high DPPH* and t-BuOO* scavenging activity

DPPH is a common free radical of the organic chemical compound 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl used as a tool to monitor chemical reactions involving radicals.

t-BuOO (tert-Butyl hydroperoxide) is a free radical of organic peroxide widely used in a variety of testing of oxidation.

Further analysis showed that the efficacy of red hulled rice in inhibiting the presence of free radicals was attributed to the phytochemical procyanidins, which are members of the class of flavonoids, formed from catechin and epicatechin molecules.

Some researchers suggested that procyanidins show more effects on the ability of free radical scavenging in the aqueous phase with an average molecular weight of about 5000.

Additionally, in a range of about 500-18,000 procyanidins also facilitated a free radical reduction through the hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) and single electron transfer followed by proton transfer (SET-PT) mechanisms.

In phenolic compounds isolated from pigmented rice (black, red, and green rice) using aqueous mixtures of acetone, ethanol, and methanol to determine the most effective extraction solvent against the expression of reactive oxygen species, researchers showed that according to 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay,
* An extract from 40:60 acetone-water mixtures (v/v) provides the highest antioxidant activity in the ameliorated presence of levels of free radicals.

* Antioxidant activities of 40% acetone extracts of pigmented rice bran, measured in the range of 0 to 1500 μg/mL, process the highest total phenolic (259.5 μg/mg) and total flavonoid (187.4 μg/mg) contents in an exhibition of antioxidant activity of 83.6%.

Compared to other pigments, red rice bran showed the least efficacy in inhibited free radical butylated hydroxytoluene (144.5 μg/mL) also from the DPPH radical assay.

Dr. Jun H, after taking into account other confounders, said, "The major phenolic acids of red rice bran were ferulic, vanillic and p-coumaric acids and " black and red rice bran could be better raw materials for manufacturing the food with high antioxidant activity".


These results of the investigation indicated that antioxidant contents in hulled rice are incomparable, depending on the color and the red and black hulled rice contain the highest antioxidant expression compared to other colors.

Interestingly, when the hull is removed from three types of colored rice bran--forbidden rice, red rice, and green rice, the antioxidant levels were reduced by ONLY a fraction
* Forbidden rice and green rice bran yield antioxidant contents of 90%-100% and 80%-90%, respectively, and
* Red rice bran obtained from red rice yields an antioxidant content of 90%-100%.

The showings suggested that contrary to general belief, the pigmented skin of hull rice only represents a fraction of antioxidants compared to all contents in the color rice bran.

Taking all together, non-hull colors rice may be considered as a functional food to promote antioxidant circulation in attenuated risk of oxidative stress in the induction of various forms of the disease.

People with a higher risk of oxidative stress may want to add a portion of non-hull color rice into their daily diet for preventive measures.
