High intake of #Celery Is Associated with a Lower the Risk of #LungCancer, Researchers Find

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a veggie with the potential for the prevention and treatment of lung cancer, some studies suggested.

Lung cancer is a chronic and medical condition that caused irregular cell growth in the lung tissue due to DNA alternation.

Most cases of primary lung cancer start from the alternated cell on the surface of the inner ling of the lung.

At the later stage, after colonizing most parts of the lung, the cancerous cell can travel a distance away from the lung to infect other healthy tissue and organs.

At the early of lung cancer, patients may not have any symptoms. however, as the tumor grows larger, it can suppress the nearby tissue and nerve cells, leading to localized pain and discomfort.

Researchers do not know the exact causes of lung cancer. Long-term cigarette smoking is one of the major risk factors associated with the substantial risk of the disease, according to epidemiological studies.

Other risk factors including long-term exposure to secondhand smoke and radiation have also increased the risk of lung cancer onset.

Dr. Beate Pesch, the lead scientist in the study "Cigarette Smoking and lung cancer,..."Current male smokers with an average daily dose of >30 cigarettes had ORs of 103.5 for SqCC, 111.3 for SCLC, and for AdCa. In women, the corresponding ORs were 62.7, 108.6, and 16.8, respectively".

The risk of lung cancer increased proportionally to the increase in number of cigarettes daily depending on the type of lung cancer.

Male smokers are at a higher risk of lung cancer, compare to female smokers.

Celery is a species of Apium graveolens, belonging to the family Apiaceae. It is cultivated all around the globe as a vegetable. Celery can grow to 1/2 m tall with stalks (leaf on the top) arranged in a conical shape joined at a common base.

In the concerns of the widespread lung cancer in rural China, researchers at the Istituto di Ricerche Farmacologiche Mario Negri launched a study to evaluate the relationship between dietary intake of vegetables and fruit and lung cancer risk in Harbin, Heilongjiang province, northeast China.

The case-control study, conducted from 1987 to 1990, among 218 cases with the incident, histologically confirmed lung cancer and 436 controls admitted to the same hospitals as cases with non-neoplastic, non-lung diseases unrelated to smoking and other potential risk factors for lung cancer.

After taking a closed differentiation of the returned questionnaire, a high intake of celery was found to be the most outstanding vegetable in lowering cancer incidence compared to the high intake of Chinese cabbage, chives, and carrots.

Sadly, the OR was more than six-fold elevated for smokers reporting low intake of vegetables and more than four-fold elevated for smokers reporting low intake of fruit, as compared with never-smokers reporting high intake of these items.

Furthermore, in the reaffirmation of vegetable intake in reducing the risk of lung cancer in the Tin Corporation (YTC) miners in Yunnan, researchers once suggested that a high intake of celery is associated with a lower risk of lung cancer.

However, the reduced risk of lung cancer also is dependent on the type of vegetable intake and the total volume of vegetable intake daily.

Taken together, celery may be considered a functional vegetable in reducing the risk of lung cancer and an adjunct therapy combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of lung cancer without inducing any adverse effects.

#Phytochemical #Betacyanins Process Peroxyl Radical Scavenging Capacity, According to Studies

By Kyle J. Norton

Free radical scavengers are antioxidants that gobble up free radicals before they can cause a chain of reaction.
The most common types of free radical scavengers are catalase, glutathione peroxidase, superoxide dismutase (SOD), and vitamins A, C, D, and E.

Free radicals are highly unstable molecules. They can be everywhere. Internally, free radicals are produced in our bodies during the process of cell metabolism. Externally, free radicals can enter our body from environmental sources, such as the air we breathe, the food we eat, and the water we drink.

In other words, any chemical compounds or molecules which process oxygen atom can be free radical after chemical interaction.

Oxidative stress is a result of overexpression of free radical-induced by a chain reaction that can not be stopped due to reduced levels of antioxidant enzymes produced by the body.

Why? overexpression of free radicals causes lipid peroxidation by oxidizing the free and ester forms of unsaturated fatty acids and cholesterol through three distinct mechanisms, including free radical-mediated chain reaction, enzyme-mediated oxidation, and nonradical, non-enzymatic oxidation.

Over time, oxidative stress can damage the lipid, and protein and induce the alternation of healthy cell DNA.

How important free radical scavengers to our bodies? Dr. Milind S Hatwalne in the investigation of the effect of free radical scavengers in anesthesiology and critical care wrote, "Free radicals are highly reactive and unstable compounds. They play a central role in the mechanism of cell injury and cell death".

And, "Free radical scavengers either prevent these reactive species from being formed or remove them before they can damage vital components of the cell" and "Several clinical trials have been performed in order to reduce oxidative stress by supplementation of antioxidants alone or in combination with standard therapies. Antioxidant supplementation at an early stage of illness may lead to improved therapies in the treatment of critically ill patients".

In other words, antioxidants with free radical scavenging activity may protect the body against the damage of various cellular components.

Betacyanins are phytochemicals in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments, belonging to the group of Betalains, found abundantly in beets, chard, etc.

With an aim to find a potential compound for the treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, researchers examined the effect of betacyanins as free radical scavengers.

By analyzing the compound in betacyanins, researchers found that
* Betanin was a weak free radical scavenger in the free radical chain-breaking probably due to kinetic solvent effects on its solubility, stability, and reaction rates, and partition in lipid bilayers (a thin polar membrane) activity.

* Betanidin also found in betacyanins behaved as a chain-terminating antioxidant in the liposomal model,.particualrly in peroxyl radical-scavenging activity

The finding strongly suggested that betacyanins exhibit a chemical reaction of betanin and its glycone betanidin towards peroxyl radicals generated from the azo-initiated oxidation.

Additionally, in the peroxyl radical generating system with the presence of AAPH and NO-generating system, researchers assessed the antioxidant capacity of betacyanins as indole-derived plant pigments, such as betanin, phyllotactic, and betanidin.

According to the tested assays, betacyanins induced peroxyl radical scavenging capacity at a dose-dependent in the low concentration range (25-100 nM).

Furthermore, betacyanins also reduced the nitrite level in the low concentration range of 2.5-20 μM.

In chemical ingredients differentiation, the IC₅₀ values (μM) of nitrogen radical scavenging activity were 24.48, 17.51, and 6.81 for betanin, phyllocactin, and betanidin.

Based on the results, Dr. Taira J, the lead scientist wrote, "These results indicated that betacyanins have a strong antioxidant capacity, particularly betanidin with a catechol group had higher activity than those of the glycoside of betacyanins".

Taken altogether, betacyanins may be considered free radical scavengers to terminate the oxidative reaction, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of betacyanins in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Herbal #AlfalfaExtracts (AAE) Process #Anti-#Hyperlipidemic Properties, Studies Suggest

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have a functional herb in reducing the risk and treatment of abnormal blood cholesterol in the bloodstream with no side effects, some studies suggested.
Cholesterol is a waxy substance found in all cells in our body.

The waxy substance produced by the liver and or intake from dietary sources plays a critical role in the production of sex hormones, the building block for the tissue, and assistance of bile production in the liver for digestion.

There are 2 main types of cholesterol;
* The good cholesterol or high-density lipoproteins (HDL) process the unique function in the transportation of cholesterol from the cells and tissue back to the liver. The good cholesterol also inhibits bad cholesterol over-accumulated in the cells.

* The Bad cholesterol or low-density lipoproteins (LDL) which process the function to deliver cholesterol to cells to build membranes, to the synthesis of steroid hormones.

An unhealthy diet with high in saturated and trans fats, red meat, processed foods and less in fruits and vegetables and lifestyle can cause high levels of LDL, leading to the development of serious health problems including clogged arteries, heart disease, and stroke.

In "YOUR GUIDE TO Lowering Your Cholesterol With TLC" published by the US. Department of Health and Human Services, the author wrote, "Studies have proven that lowering LDL can prevent heart attacks and reduce deaths from heart disease in both men and women". and "It can slow, stop, or even reverse the buildup of plaque. It also can lower the cholesterol content in unstable plaques, making them more stable and less likely to burst and cause a heart attack. Lowering LDL is especially important for those who already have heart disease or have had a heart attack—it will reduce the risk of another heart attack and can actually prolong life. The level to which your LDL must be lowered depends on the risk for heart disease or having a heart attack that you are found to have at the start of treatment".

These results suggested that by following a healthy diet pattern and lifestyle high levels of bad cholesterol can be reversed regardless of other factors.

Alfalfa is a flowering plant in the genus Medicago, belonging to the family Fabaceae, It has been cultivated all over the world as hay for cattle feeding.

The leaves, sprouts, and seeds make medicine that has been used in traditional medicine over thousands of years to treat high cholesterol, asthma, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, enhance the digestive system, bleeding disorders, kidney, and urinary tract infections, etc.

North America Aboriginals have used Alfalfa seed as food, such as making bread and mush.

In the study of Fifteen patients with hyperlipoproteinemia (HLP), types IIA (n = 8), IIB (n = 3), and IV (n = 4) given 40 g of heat-prepared alfalfa seeds 3 times daily at mealtimes for 8 weeks with otherwise unchanged diet, researchers found that

* In patients with type II HLP alfalfa treatment caused after 8 weeks a maximal lowering of pretreatment median values of total plasma cholesterol from 9.58 to 8.00 mmol/l (P less than 0.001) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol from 7.69 to 6.33 mmol/l (P less than 0.01), which corresponds to decreases of 17% and 18%, respectively.

* Maximal decrease in these patients was 26% in total cholesterol and 30% in LDL cholesterol.

* Apolipoprotein B decreased in the same period from 2.17 to 1.43 g/l (P less than 0.05) in type II HLP, corresponding to a 34% decrease, whereas apolipoprotein A-I did not change.
These results suggested alfalfa seeds can be added to the diet to help normalize serum cholesterol concentrations in patients with type II HLP.

Furthermore, in the evaluation of the effect of an aqueous alfalfa extract (AAE) on production, performance, egg quality, and lipid metabolism of laying hens between 28 and 36 weeks of age randomly assigned to Four groups, fed with diets containing 0, 0.05%, 0.1%, and 0.15% AAE, researchers showed that

* In relation to the control group, cholesterol and triglycerides in yolk, liver, and serum and serum very-low-density lipoprotein cholesterol were lower in 0.15% AAE-treated birds at day 42 and day 56.

* It also significantly decreased activities of acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC) which has the function of regulating the fatty acid synthesis and degradation, β-hydroxy-β-methylglutaryl-CoA (HMG CoA) reductase which has a function in controlling the metabolic pathway that produces cholesterol and other isoprenoids and fatty acid synthetase (FAS) at day 56.

These results indicated dietary AAE could be applied to improve eggshell quality and modify the lipid status of laying hens and eggs.

Interestingly, Dr. Yu CH, the lead author, in the study "[Study on the chemical constituents from the aerial parts of Medicago sativa and their hypolipidemic activity]" to isolate some chemical constituents from the aerial parts of Medicago sativa suggested the 2 new compounds soy saponinisolate I (I), azukisaponin V (II) also process antihyperlipidemic activity.

Taken altogether, Herbal Alfalfa may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and treatment of high blood cholesterol.

#Antioxidant 3,3'-#Diindolylmethane in the Inhibition of #PancreaticCancer Cell Proliferation and Migration, Researchers Find

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a bioactive compound for the treatment of pancreatic cancer with no side effects, according to studies.
Pancreatic cancer is a chronic condition characterized by cell growth irregularly in the tissues of the pancreas.

According to statistics, every year, approximately, over 55,000 adults in the United States are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, accounting for 3% of all cancers and 7% of all cancer deaths.

The survival rate of pancreatic cancer even if diagnosed early is very low compared to other types of cancer. The 5-year survival rate for stage IA pancreatic cancer is only 14%.

Researchers do not know what causes pancreatic cancer. They don't even know why people with the same health conditions in the same family, are susceptible to pancreatic cancer, while others do not.

Most common risk factors of pancreatic cancer are similar to those of common cancers, including age, family history, gender, ethnicity, smoking, being overweight or obes,e and certain medical conditions such as diabetes.

However, some researchers suggested that an unhealthy diet with high animal products such as the Western diet is associated with an increased risk of pancreatic cancer.

Dr. McCarty MF at the Pantox Laboratories, in the investigation of insulin secretion as a determinant of pancreatic cancer risk, wrote, "In international ecologic epidemiology, pancreatic cancer rates correlate tightly with dietary intake of animal products; this may reflect the fact that vegan diets are associated with low diurnal insulin secretion".

And, "There is also suggestive evidence that macrobiotic vegan diets, which are low in glycemic index, may increase mean survival time in pancreatic cancer. However, other types of diets associated with decreased postprandial insulin response, such as high-protein diets or 'Mediterranean' diets high in oleic acid, may also have the potential for pancreatic cancer prevention".

The results clearly indicated a reduced risk of diets associated with less consumption of animal products and high fruits and vegetables such as traditional and vegan diets.

3,3'-Diindolylmethane or DIM are phytochemicals derived from the digestion of indole-3-carbinol, belonging to the group of Indoles, found abundantly in broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, kale, etc.

Researchers on finding a natural ingredient for the treatment of pancreatic cancer examined the function of dietary 3,3'-diindolylmethane (DIM) on the molecules of pancreatic cancer through the mechanistic underexpression of Krüppel-like factor 4 (KLF4) in pancreatic cancer.

Where Krüppel-like factor 4 (KLF4) is a zinc-finger transcription factor that plays a critical role in the regulation of many cellular functions in both normal and neoplastic (benign or cancer) cells.

Injection of 3,3'-Diindolylmethane inhibited the overexpression of DNA methyltransferase 1 (DNMT1) in the promotion of cell cycle division, leading to decreased KLF4 expression.

In other words, 3,3'-Diindolylmethane increased KLF4 expression in altering pancreatic cancer cell cycle progression by arresting the cells at the G2/M phase.

The findings indicated that DIM treatment caused significant inhibition of cell growth in vitro and tumorigenesis in animal models of pancreatic cancer.

Dr. Xie VK and colleagues said, "dysregulated KLF4 expression associated with poor differentiation of pancreatic cancer" and "dietary DIM causes differentiation and significant growth inhibition of pancreatic cancer cells".

In order to reveal more information about the effect of DIM against the progression of pancreatic cancer, researchers investigated the overexpression of miR-221 in pancreatic cancer cell lines and tumor tissues compared to normal pancreatic duct epithelial cells and normal pancreas tissues.

Application of DIM exerted a significant effect in enhancing the transfection of miR-221 inhibitor in suppressing the proliferative capacity of pancreatic cancer cells accompanied by the activation of genes associated with tumor suppression.

Furthermore, injection of DIM alone or combined with isoflavone mixture (G2535), formulated 3,3'-diindolylmethane (BR-DIM), or synthetic curcumin analog (CDF) demonstrated a strong effect against the expression of miR-221 in pancreatic cancer cells, leading to the inhibition of cell proliferation and migration.

Dr. Sarkar S, the lead scientist wrote in the final report, "These results provide experimental evidence in support of the oncogenic role of miR-221 and also demonstrate the role of isoflavone, BR-DIM, and CDF as potential non-toxic agents that are capable of down-regulation of miR-221".

Taken altogether, 3,3'-Diindolylmethane derived from the I3C may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of pancreatic cancer, pending the confirmation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of 3,3'-Diindolylmethane as a supplement should be taken with exceptional care to prevent acute liver toxicity.

#Healthyfood #BeetJuice Exhibits the Cytotoxicity Against #BreastCancer Cells, Studies Find

By Kyle J. Norton

Beet, one of the root vegetables may have a therapeutic effect in reduced risk and treatment of breast cancer, a renowned institute opinionated.
Beet, a perennial plant with leafy stems growing to 1–2 m tall, is best known as the beetroot or garden beet, belongings to the amaranth family

According to Howard University, an extract of red beetroot (Beta vulgaris L.), the FDA-approved red food color E162, in an animal model, exhibited anti-cancer activity by suppressing the early onset of multi-organ tumors.

In the comparison of the red beetroot extract and anticancer drug, doxorubicin cytotoxic effect against estrogen receptor-positive human breast cancer cells (MCF-7), both treated groups exerted a similar and significant anti-breast cancer cell line effect in the induction of cytotoxicity. However, the cytotoxicity of the beetroot extract was significantly lower than those of doxorubicin.

Dr. Kapadia GJ, the lead author postulated, the breast cancer cell line inhibition of beetroot may be attributed to the phytochemical betanin, the principal betacyanin constituent found abundantly in the vegetable.

Also in the testing of the chemotherapeutic drug doxorubicin (DOX, Adriamycin), at different concentrations of BRJ (0.5, 5, 50, 250, and 500 µg/ml) with or without DOX, BRJ showed a significantly reduced breast cancer cell growth within and at 48 hours, similar to those of DOX-induced apoptosis, observed by TUNEL assay.

Additionally, in dose-dependent, co-treatment of BRJ and DOX improved the efficacy of treatment in enhanced apoptosis in breast cancer cells by exerting a strong effect in the ameliorated generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) produced by DOX.

In fact, lower concentrations, a combination of BRJ and DOX, also displayed the most effectiveness in explicit cardioprotection and chemoprevention in tested subjects synergistically.

More importantly, Dr. Kapadia GJ, the lead author in the other study conducted by the same University said, "Long-term daily exposure to low doses of B through diet might be safe and sufficient to produce cancer chemopreventive effect in humans.

Promisingly, the intake of beet juice may also contribute to an overall positive reduction in DOX drug concentration in use to influence cytotoxicity activity for the treatment of human breast cancer.

Taken together, Beet Juice, used alone or combined with chemotherapeutic medicine, maybe a functional food for reduced risk and enhanced breast cancer treatment.

#Herbal #Arctostaphylos Uva-Ursi Inhibits the Growth of #EndometrialCancer Cells in Vitros, Scientists Suggest

By Kyle J. Norton

Arctostaphylos uva-ursi is one of the species of Bearberry, in the genus Arctostaphylos, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to northern North America, Asia, and Europe. The herb has been used in traditional medicine as a diuretic agent and to treat urinary problems, including bladder infections, kidney infections, kidney stones, pelvic pain, etc.

The endometrium is the inner lining of the mammalian uterus and is very susceptible to hormone change, particularly in the menstrual cycle. Endometrial cancer is a late adulthood cancer defined as a condition in which the cells of the endometrial lining of the uterus have growth uncontrollably or become cancerous as a result of the alternation of the cell's DNA. It's the fourth most common cancer among women overall, after breast cancer, lung cancer, and bowel cancer.

Ursolic acid, a pentacyclic triterpene acid, extracted from bearberry is found to be effective in inhibition of the growth of endometrial cancer cell HEC108 line, in a dose- and time-dependent manner. As exposure to Ursolic acid decreased the anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 protein levels (a member of the Bcl-2 family of regulator proteins that regulate cell death) but increased Bax expression (upregulated by the tumor suppressor protein p53,)through a mitochondrial pathway, that induced apoptosis of endometrial cancer HEC108 line. Other in the study of the same but within endometrial cancer SNG-II cells, ursolic acid strongly inhibited the growth of SNG-II cells in a dose- and time-dependent manner. The induced apoptotic processes in the endometrial cancer SNG-II cells are also involved in mitochondrial pathways and Bcl-2 family proteins.

#Healthyfood #BlackBeans Reduce the Risk of #CardiovascularDiseases & #Diabetes By Improving the Parameters Associated with #MetabolicSyndrome, Studies Find

By Kyle J. Norton

Intake of black bean and other common beans may associate to the ameliorated risk of metabolic syndrome induced type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, a joint study of renowned institutes suggested.

Metabolic Syndrome is a group of risk factors associated with the development of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes.
Black bean, a small roughly ovoid legume with glossy black shells, genus Phaseolus, belongings to the family Fabaceae can be bought in most grocery stores all around the year in dried and canned forms. It is believed that black bean was first domesticated growth in South America.

In a pilot study consisted 12 men and women with metabolic syndrome randomly assigned to eat three standard meals in a crossover design on three different occasions that contained either no added fiber (control (NF)), extrinsic or added fiber (AF), or whole black beans as the source of intrinsic fiber (BN). 5 hours after meal intake, the black bean injection group showed a remarkable improvement of blood glucose, insulin, cholecystokinin (CCK) and the GI hormones in compared to other groups.

Unfortunately, even with such results, the black bean meal was not the meal of choice of a tested adult compared to NF meal which tended to result in more satisfaction.

Dr. Reverri EJ, the lead author said, "Incorporating whole black beans into a meal has acute beneficial metabolic and GI hormone responses in adults with metabolic syndrome and are preferred over adding equivalent amounts of fiber from a supplement."

Other, in the study of 12 adults with metabolic syndrome (MetS) consumed one of three meals (black bean (BB), fiber matched (FM), and antioxidant capacity matched (AM)) on three occasions with included blood collection before (fasting) and five hours postprandially, black beam intake group showed an improvement of insulin resistance, antioxidant capacity, ox-LDL and inhibited pro-inflammatory expression against risk factor of metabolic syndrome in an increased risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

The study also suggested a black bean group according to observed plasma antioxidant capacity may be less at the beginning compared to AM group, but at the endpoint, the BB group showed a significant antioxidant level compared to the other 2 groups.

The findings suggested that black bean may be considered as a therapeutic functional food in reducing the risk of metabolic syndrome which is an early indicator of the onset of diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
