Ursolic Acid, A Potential Adjunct Therapy for the Treatment of Lung Cancer

By Kyle J. Norton

The lung is a vital organ of the human being, located near the backbone on either side of the heart with functions of inhaling oxygen from the air then transporting them to the bloodstream to nourish the body cells' need and exhaling carbon dioxide from the bloodstream.

Lung cancer is defined as a condition of the abnormal growth of the cells in the lung's tissue.

A most common form of primary lung cancer is derived from epithelial cells. In the Us, Lung cancer causes the death of  158,683 people, including 88,329 men and 70,354 women, according to the 2007 statistic.

Believe it or not, each year, more people die of lung cancer than of colon, breast, and prostate cancers combined.

Most people diagnosed with lung cancer are 65 or older, compared to a very small number of those younger than 45.

Non-small cell lung cancer is the most common type of lung cancer. It usually grows and spreads methodically and predictably.
Most common types of lung cancers include
* Squamous-cell carcinoma is a type of NSCLC often found in an outer area of the lung.

* Large-cell carcinoma is a type of NSCLC found in the center of the lung by an air tube.

* Adenocarcinoma is a type of NSCLC found in any part of the lung.

The 5 years of the survival rate of never and ever smokers in patients with stage I is 92%, compared to 76%, in smokers.

The 5-year recurrence-free proportions (RFPs) for never and ever smokers were 89% compared to 80%, in smokers.

Ursolic acid is a phytochemical in the subclass of Triterpenoid, belongings to the group of Terpenes found abundantly in apples, basil, bilberries, cranberries, peppermint, lavender, oregano, hawthorn, prunes., etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of chronic diseases, researchers examined the effect of ursolic acid (UA) on the stemness of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cells.
According to the analysis of the NSCLC cells with paclitaxel resistance (A549-PR) which exhibited a remarkably stronger stemness than the parental A549 cells,
* UA administration significantly reduced the stemness and paclitaxel resistance of A549-PR cells.

* UA inhibited the miR-149-5p/MyD88 signaling in the promotion of cancer cell resistance and responsible for UA-mediated effects on the stemness of A549-PR cells.

After talking about other factors into account, researchers said, "UA could attenuate the stemness and chemoresistance of NSCLC cells through targeting miR-149-5p/MyD88 axis".

Taken altogether, Ursolic acid may be considered adjunct therapies in the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of tocopherols in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

The Effects of Herbal Angelica on Myocardial Fibrosis in Vivo

By Kyle J. Norton

Fibrosis is a medical condition caused by the excessive formation of fibrous connective tissue in an organ or tissue.

Myocardial fibrosis is a medical condition caused by increased myofibroblast activity and excessive extracellular matrix deposition in the heart.

Myocardial fibrosis has been found to induce heart remodeling that leads to heart failure and death.

The severity of the grades range from A0 to A3:
A0: no activity
A1: mild activity
A2: moderate activity
A3: severe activity

and

The severity of fibrosis stages range from F0 to F4:
F0: no fibrosis
F1: portal fibrosis without septa
F2: portal fibrosis with few septa
F3: numerous septa without cirrhosis
F4: cirrhosis, the most severe stage of fibrosis

The most common symptoms of are myocardial fibrosis are increased myocardial stiffness, cardiomyocyte necrosis, arrhythmias, sudden cardiac death, and unfavorable prognosis.

The most common causes of myocardial fibrosis are coronary heart disease, aortic stenosis, and hypertension.

Aortic stenosis and hypertension also have been found to pressure overload of the left ventricle induced hypertrophy and interstitial fibrosis.

Angelica or Dang Qui is a herb of Genus Angelica from the family Apiaceae, indigenous to China.

The herb has been used as a Queen herb in traditional Chinese medicine antispasmodic and vasodilatory agent, and to balance the hormones in women for a normal menstrual cycle and menstruation and strengthen heart, spleen, kidneys, and liver for both men and women, etc. In other words, it is used to treat gynecological ailments, fatigue, mild anemia, and high blood pressure. It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, etc.

On finding a natural compound for the treatment of diseases associated with fibrosis, the researchers examined the effects of Radix Angelica Sinensis and Radix Hedysari ultrafiltration extract (RAS-RH) on cardiac fibrosis induced by a single dose of total body irradiation (TBI) at 8 Gy.

Based on the analysis,
* The control hearts exhibited less collagen and fibrosis compared to (TBI) treatment rats showed the increase in the serum levels of transforming growth factor β1 (TGF-β1) involved in cytokine expression and troponin-I (TnI) associated with the inhibition of blood vessel contraction.

* RAS-RH treatment mitigated these morphological injuries.

* RAS-RH also induced the apoptosis of primary rat cardiac fibroblasts after X- irradiation.

* Genes associated with the cellular proliferation of rat cardiac fibroblasts induced by TBI were all inhibited by the injection of RAS-RH.

Collectively, researchers said, "RAS-RH may potentially be developed as a medical countermeasure for the mitigation of radiation-induced myocardial fibrosis".

Taken altogether, Herbal Angelica used in a combination with other herbal medicines may be considered a decoction for the prevention of myocardial fibrosis, pending to larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Cruciferous Vegetables Gobble Up Liver Cancer Cells

By Kyle J. Norton

The liver is one of the organs with a lack of nerve tissue, therefore liver cancer does not induce pain until the later stage.

Liver cancer is a medical condition characterized by cell growth irregularly in the liver tissue.

The causes of liver cancer are associated with the alternation of cells DNA that normally begins in the cells on the surface of the inner lining.

Liver cancer at the early stage no not cause any symptoms. However, at the advanced stage, liver cancer cells can cause a wide range of symptoms including jaundice, abdominal swelling and pain, and dark urine and white stool accompanied by the general symptoms of cancers such as unintended weight loss, loss of appetite, chronic fatigue and tiredness and gastrointestinal discomforts.

The most common cause of liver cancer is infected by the hepatitis virus. However, in North America, due to overexpression of overweight and obese of the population, liver cancer may be slowly progressed from nonalcoholic fatty liver disease through cirrhosis to liver cancer.

There is a number of risk factors other than those mentioned above associated with the onset of liver cancer such as male, ethnicity, hepatitis viral carriers.

According to the statistics provided by the Canadian Cancer Society, every year, approximately, 1,900 men and 580 women are diagnosed with liver cancer, causing the death of 950 men and 270 women.

In 2017, 2,500 Canadians were diagnosed with liver cancer and 1,200 Canadians died from liver cancer.

Compared to the early stage of other cancer, the 5 years survival rate in the early stage diagnosis is only 31% and 43% of people with liver cancer diagnosed at stage 0 and 1.

Cruciferous vegetables are a group of vegetables, belongings to the family Brassicaceae (also called Cruciferae) with many genera, species, and cultivated all over the world in suitable climate for commercial profits, including cauliflower, cabbage, kale, garden cress, bok choy, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and green leafy vegetables.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of cancer, researchers examined the effects of Isothiocyanates (ITCs), the phytochemicals derived from the breakdown of glucosinolates that exist in cruciferous vegetables against liver cancer cells.

In HepG2 cells, all ITCs reduced metabolic activity in each cell line, particularly in the compound phenylethyl-ITC.

Both dietary and synthetic ITCs were found to suppress the migratory and invasive potential of all cell lines.

Furthermore, chronic injection of dietary and synthetic ITCs also inhibited the cancer cell colony-forming capability and induced apoptosis.

Phenylethyl-ITC exposure resulted in a significant generation of reactive oxygen species to stimulate the expression of cytotoxicity in the cancer cell lines.

Collectively, researchers said, "These data highlight the potential advantages of utilizing ITCs to delay the carcinogenic process and the potential for dietary and synthetic ITCs to act as anticancer agents".

Taken altogether, Cruciferous vegetables may be considered functional foods for the prevention of liver cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Phytochemical Tocopherols in Reducing the Risk and treatment of Chronic Diseases

By Kyle J. Norton

Chronic diseases are medical conditions that last more than 3 months depending on the type of diseases.

In other words, chronic diseases generally cannot be prevented or cured by medication, nor do they just disappear.

According to the statistics, chronic diseases affect millions of people worldwide, leading to the death of 35 million people in 2005, including many young people and those in middle age.

The most common types of chronic diseases include cardiovascular diseases, stroke, cancer, chronic respiratory diseases, diabetes, and mental disorders.

In an inflammatory perspective, chronic inflammatory diseases are the results of the immune system response that can not kill off all infectious pathogens during the acute phase of infection, leading to the immune adaptation to the new change.

In some cases, chronic diseases also are caused by the immune system mistakenly attacking the bodily tissue, leading to low-grade inflammation such as rheumatoid arthritis.

The exacted causes of chronic diseases are not identified. Aging, unhealthy lifestyle such as excessive alcohol drinking smoking, poor diet, lack of physical activity are the most common risk factors associated with the onset of the disease.

According to the joint study led by Fordham University, chronic diseases are among the most prevalent and costly health conditions in the US, affecting over 133 million of the US population as many of them suffer from at least one chronic disease and the number is growing in the rapid rate.

Some chronic diseases such as cancer have been found to be the leading causes of hospitalization, long-term disability, reduced quality of life, and death.

Tocopherols are phytochemicals of which many have vitamin E activity, belongings to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in butter, egg yolk, milk fat, some vegetable, and seed or nut oils, etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of chronic diseases, researchers examined the effect of tocopherols on a number of health conditions.

According to the tested analysis, tocotrienol suppressed the mevalonate pathway responsible for cholesterol and prenylated protein synthesis against the formation of hyperlipidemia.

Furthermore, tocotrienol, also showed significant activity in the prevention or treatment of diabetes mellitus, osteoporosis, and cancer.

In Vivo and Vitro, tocotrienol shows promising effects in preventing or treating a number of chronic health conditions.

Taken altogether, tocopherols may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of tocopherols in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Collard Greens Protects the Liver Against Hepatic Damage

By Kyle J. Norton

The liver is the largest internal organ found in the human which plays an essential role in filtering the blood from the digestive system before passing them to other parts of the body.

Liver disease is a class of medical conditions characterized by the reducing partly or completely the function of the liver, including liver failure.

Most common types of liver disease in the US are
* Hepatitis C (26%) is a liver disease caused by liver inflammation caused by viral Hepatitis C, leading to irreversible liver scars. Over time, the condition can also induce liver cancer.
and
* Alcoholic liver disease (21%) is a condition that caused long-term excessive alcohol drinking. It is known that years of alcohol abuse can cause the liver to become inflamed and swollen. Over time, it has been found to induce the formation of liver scars, known as cirrhosis. Cirrhosis is the final stage of liver disease.

According to the statistic, in the US, cirrhosis and other chronic liver diseases are common disease-related causes of death. Approximately 31,000 people in the U.S. die each year from cirrhosis.

Sadly, approximately, 3.5 to 4.6 million people in the U.S. are chronically infected with the hepatitis C virus.

Liver damage and disease can also be caused by long-term intake of certain medications, such as paracetamol and Illegal drugs such as cocaine-induced liver injury.

Symptoms of liver diseases include persistent jaundice and gastrointestinal discomforts, abdominal pain, and swelling, leg and ankles swelling, itching, and pale color of stool.

Collard Green is a species of Brassica Oleracea, belongings to the family Brassicaceae with unknown origin. Today, the plant is cultivated commercially for its thick, slightly bitter edible leaves.

On finding a potential plant that process liver protective activity researchers examined the preventive effects of I3C found in Brassica family vegetables, including Collard Greens against ethanol (EtOH)-induced liver injury.

In the well-established chronic-plus-binge alcohol exposure model, chronic treatment with I3C alleviated EtOH-induced liver injury and hepatocyte apoptosis, but not steatosis, by attenuating elevated oxidative stress.

In other words, I3C protected the liver against damage by decreasing levels of hepatic lipid peroxidation, hydrogen peroxide, CYP2E1, NADPH-oxidase, and protein acetylation associated with the onset of oxidative diseases.

The liver protective activity was found in the maintenance of mitochondrial complex I, II, and III protein levels and activities in oxidative phosphorylation.

Furthermore, hepatic proinflammatory cytokines involved in liver damage were also inhibited by the increasing production of antioxidant enzymes and decreasing free fatty acid release.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "Collectively, I3C prevented EtOH-induced liver injury via attenuating the damaging effect of ethanol on the gut-liver-adipose tissue axis. Therefore, I3C may also have a high potential for translational research in treating or preventing other types of hepatic injury associated with oxidative stress and inflammation".

Taken altogether, collard green may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of liver damage, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Broccoli Sprout Inhibited Hepatic Abnormalities Against Liver Diseases

By Kyle J. Norton

The liver is the largest internal organ found in the human which plays an essential role in filtering the blood from the digestive system before passing them to other parts of the body.

The liver also produces cholesterol, a waxy substance which aids digestion, builds cell membranes and produces vitamin D and steroid hormones.

Liver disease is a class of medical conditions characterized by the reducing partly or completely the function of the liver, including liver failure.

The most common types of liver disease in the US are hepatitis C (26%), alcoholic liver disease (21%), hepatitis C plus alcoholic liver disease (15%), cryptogenic causes (18%), hepatitis B and D (15%).

The most common symptoms of liver diseases are jaundice, abdominal pain and swelling, swelling in the legs and ankles, itchy skin, dark urine color, pale stool color, or bloody or tar-colored stool, chronic fatigue and nausea or vomiting.

According to the statistics provided by the CDC, in the US, 4.5 million adults are living with liver disease.
In other words, 1.8% of the adults in the US are diagnosed with liver diseases

Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belong to the family Brassicaceae. The veggie has large flower heads, usually green in color and the mass of flower heads surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant on the continent of Europe.

On finding a potential plant for the prevention and treatment of liver diseases researchers compared the effects of sulforaphane-rich broccoli sprout extract against liver abnormality.

The randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind trial included male participants with fatty liver received either BS capsules containing glucoraphanin [GR; a precursor of SF (n = 24)] or placebo (n = 28) for 2 months.

According to the results, compared to before and after treatment, dietary supplements BS extract containing SF precursor GR showed a significant decrease in the serum levels of liver stress markers, alanine aminotransferases ( ALT) from 54.0 (34.5-79.0) to48.5 (33.3-65.3), compared to no change in the placebo group.

The supplement also decreased the liver stress marker of alkali phosphatase compared before and after treatment from 6.66 (5.51-9.03) to 5.49 (4.89-6.66).

According to the urinary level of 8-OHdG, the oxidative stress marker was significantly reduced in participants, after the dietary supplementation.

In the rat model, researchers said, " Intake of BS extract prevented NDMA-induced chronic liver failure in rats, which was attributable to the suppression of the increase in TBARS through induction of hepatic phase 2 antioxidant enzymes".

Where thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) are formed after lipid peroxidation.

And, "Dietary supplementation with BS extract containing the SF precursor GR is likely to be highly effective in improving liver function through reduction of oxidative stress".

.
Taken altogether, broccoli sprout consists of sulforaphane may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of liver abnormality caused by oxidative stress, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Ashwagandha, the Promising Nootropic, Scientists Find

By Kyle J. Norton

Nootropics are medications that process cognitive-enhancing property.
In other words, Nootropics, including supplements, herbal remedies, and others improve cognitive function, such as executive functions, memory, creativity, or motivation.

A neuron or nerve cell made of a cell body (also called soma), dendrites and an axon, is a cell in the nervous system that carries electrical impulses.

Neurons are core components of the brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves that play an essential role to process and transmit information.

Neuron dysfunction has been found to induce neurodegenerative diseases.

A neuroprotective effect is an event that protects the central nervous system (CNS) by relatively preserving the neuronal structure and/or function.

Neurological diseases are the medical conditions of brain disorder. Anything that involves the structural, biochemical or electrical abnormalities in the brain, spinal cord or other nerves, including brain damage are considered neuro diseases.

The most common neurodegenerative diseases in the elderly are dementia. Depending on the brain regions that are damaged or dysfunction, dementia can be Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, and Huntington's disease.

Genetic mutation inherited from parents such as the NOTCH3 gene is the most common autosomal dominant inherited cause of stroke and vascular dementia.

On finding a potent compound that processes the neuroprotective effect, researchers examined the effects of withanamides in W.somnifera Nootropics for enhancing and maintaining brain health and function.

Ashwagandha also is known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, Middle East, and the Mediterranean.

The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered as anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.

According to differentiation, Ashwagandha extracts and active principles not only processed the anticancer, anti-stress and remedial potential for aging but also protected the brain neurons against neurodegenerative pathologies.

Additionally, Ashwagandha leaf extracts showed a multidimensional ranking potential from the differentiation of neuroblastoma and glioma cells.
Moreover, the leaf extracts also reversed the Alzheimer's and Parkinson's pathologies and protected the brain cells' integrity against environmental neurotoxins and enhancement of memory.

Taken altogether, Ashwagandha may be considered a functional herb as nootropics including Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, pending to the result of larger sample size and multicenter study
