Broccoli, a Potential Neuroprotective Healthy Food

By Kyle J. Norton

The brain and spinal cord make up the nervous system. Brain and Spinal Cord tumors originated are not very common.

Neuroprotection is a process to preserve the neuronal structure and/or function against the death or gradual death of neurons, including the use of medicines and herbs.

In other words, neuroprotection protects the neuronal integrity against the reduction in the rate of neuronal loss over time, inducing neurological disease, including neurodegenerative disease.

A neuron or nerve cell made of a cell body (also called soma), dendrites, and an axon, is a cell in the nervous system that carries electrical impulses.

Neurons are core components of the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves that play an essential role to process and transmit information.

* The sensory neurons found within the nervous system that convert external stimuli from the organism's environment into internal electrical impulses. In other words, sensory neurons are activated by sensory input from the environment, including physical input of sound, touch, heat, or light.

*The motor neurons transmit impulses from the spinal cord to skeletal and smooth muscles,. In other words, motor neurons directly control all of the muscle movements.

* The interneurons connect the motor and sensory neurons. In other words, the interneurons transfer signals between sensory and motor neurons.

Neurodegenerative disease is the class of condition associated with the progressive loss of neuron occurred mostly in older adults, including dementia. The most common dementia in the US is Alzheimer`s disease (AD).

According to the statistic, dementia affects over 47.5 million people worldwide, approximately 58 percent are living within low and middle-income countries.

Believe it or not, 5.8 million Americans of all ages are living with Alzheimer's dementia in 2019, and two-thirds of people with Alzheimer's disease are women.

Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belong to the family Brassicaceae. The veggie has large flower heads, usually green in color, and the mass of flower heads surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant on the continent of Europe.

On finding a potential plant that protects the neuron against toxicity, researchers examined the effects sulforaphane (SF), sulforaphane (SFN) is a phytochemical found in cruciferous vegetables neuroprotective activity.

According to the results of the trial,
* SFN activated the nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) antioxidant response element (ARE) genetic pathway in the production of antioxidant enzymes in the host.

* Furthermore, SFN protected the nervous system from many diseases and toxins, according to small human trials.

* Preclinical data also suggest that SFN protects the nervous system by reducing the risk of many diseases and the burden of symptoms in existing neuro-conditions through multiple mechanisms.

In other words, SFN administration demonstrated neuroprotective effects, in a multitude of neurological diseases and toxin exposures.

Based on the results, researchers said; "SFN is a promising neuroprotective phytochemical which needs further human trials to evaluate its efficacy in preventing and decreasing the burden of many neurological diseases".

Taken altogether, with abundant phytochemical SE,  broccoli process the potential neuroprotective activity, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Angelica sinensis Processes a Potential Anti-Leukemia Activity

By Kyle J. Norton

Leukemia is a medical condition associated with an abnormal increase of white blood cells produced by the bone marrow and/or the lymphatic system. Depending on the malignant granulocytes or lymphocytes, leukemia is classified into myelogenous or lymphoblastic leukemia.

Bone marrow is the soft tissue inside the hollow center of the major bone. including spine, pelvis, underarm, leg. etc.

Bone marrow is a spongy substance found in the center of the bones with a function of manufacture the bone marrow stem cells and other substances, that produce blood cells.

There are several forms of leukemia, including acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL), acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), and chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML).

CLL and AML are the most common cancers in adults and ALL are most common in children.

In contrast to chronic leukemias that take months or years to develop, acute leukemias start and develop within days or weeks.

According to Leukemia Research, Leukemia causes the death of approximately 68,000 every year. Adults are 10 times more likely to develop the disease, compared to children.

And, Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is the 7th most common cancer in the U.S. The 5-year survival rate for all subtypes of leukemia is 61.4 percent.

Acute leukemia is a condition caused by a rapid increase in the numbers of extreme immature white blood cells which appear in the bloodstream into other parts of the body, including tissue and organs, including acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML).

In ALL, lymphocytes appear immature in the bloodstream. Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is the most common children forms of leukemia with about 80% of all cases.

Chronic leukemia is a condition of the slow but still excessive build-up of relatively mature abnormal white blood cells. The condition has a tendency to spread slowly to other parts of the body through the bloodstream and/or lymphatic system, including chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML).

Angelica or Dang Qui is a herb of Genus Angelica from the family Apiaceae, indigenous to China.

The herb has been used as a Queen herb in traditional Chinese medicine antispasmodic and vasodilatory agent, and to balance the hormones in women for a normal menstrual cycle and menstruation and strengthen the heart, spleen, kidneys, and liver for both men and women, etc. In other words, it is used to treat gynecological ailments, fatigue, mild anemia, and high blood pressure. It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, etc.

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of cancer, scientists examined the new water-soluble polysaccharide, APS-1II, with a molecular weight of 42.1 kDa isolated from the roots of Angelica sinensis (Oliv.) anti-leukemia activity.

According to the experimental results,
* APS-1II inhibited the proliferation of human leukemia K562 and mouse L1210 cells in vitro and markedly prolonged the life span of L1210-bearing mice in vivo.

* APS-1II also increased the numbers of leukocytes and lymphocytes in peripheral blood and significantly decreased plasma tumor necrosis factor, interleukin-2, and interferon-γ levels in L1210-bearing mice.

* Moreover, APS-1II administration concentration-dependently promoted the proliferation of the splenocytes, enhanced phagocytic activity of peritoneal macrophages, and cytotoxicity of natural killer cells.

Based on the results, researchers suggest, "APS-1II could effectively inhibit leukemia and induce a protective immune response, and it may be used as a suitable candidate reagent for leukemia therapy".

Taken altogether, angelica sinensis may be considered an antioxidant remedy for the prevention and treatment of leukemia, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Ursolic Acid as A CETP Inhibitor for the Treatment of High Blood Cholesterol

By Kyle J. Norton

A CETP inhibitor is a class of drugs that inhibit cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) associated with the risk of atherosclerosis (a cardiovascular disease) by improving blood lipid levels in the arteries.

Cardiovascular disease is a group of conditions triggered by the abnormal function of the heart and blood vessels abnormality.

The 3 most common forms of cardiovascular disease in North America are coronary artery disease, peripheral artery disease, and carotid artery disease caused by plaques build-up of plaque in the arteries that supply blood to the heart, the arms and legs, and the brain, respectively.

Atherosclerosis is a medical condition caused by plaques accumulated on the wall of the arteries, leading to narrowing the arteries in transporting oxygenated blood to the heart and other parts of the body.

Depending on the blood obstruction, atherosclerosis can induce different types of heart disease and stroke.

Plaque is the make of cholesterols, calcium, and other toxic substances, including cadmium.

According to the statistics provided by Atherosclerosis Open Acess, 32% of deaths account for atherosclerosis. 13.8% prevalence is among adults of 20 years and above. In 2010, coronary heart disease mortality rate was about 60%.

Risk factors of atherosclerosis include high blood pressure and cholesterol, diabetes, being overweight or obese, an unhealthy diet, a family history of heart disease, and physical inactivity, particularly smoking.

Some researchers suggested that since cholesterol makes up a big part in the plaque, an unhealthy diet with high saturated trans fat, red meat, and processed meat may be the major cause of atherosclerosis.

Ursolic acid is a phytochemical in the subclass of Triterpenoid, belongings to the group of Terpenes found abundantly in apples, basil, bilberries, cranberries, peppermint, lavender, oregano, hawthorn, prunes., etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of diseases associated with high blood lipids,
researchers examined the cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases.

According to the analysis of the activity of a series of ursolic acid 3β-ester derivatives CETP inhibiting activities.
* The most active compound is U12 with an IC50 value of 2.4 μM.

* More precisely, the possible hydrogen bond interactions between the carboxyl groups at both ends of the molecule skeleton and several polar residues (such as Ser191, Cys13, and Ser230) in the active site region of CETP could significantly enhance the inhibition activity.

After talking about other factors into account, researchers said, "This study provides structural insight of the interactions between these pentacyclic triterpenoid 3β-ester derivatives".

Taken altogether, ursolic acid may be considered a CETP inhibitor for the inhibition of high blood cholesterol, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of tocopherols in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Omega 3 Fatty Acids, the Best Antioxidant for the Treatment of Hypertriglyceridemia

By Kyle J. Norton

Hypertriglyceridemia is a condition characterized by high levels of triglycerides in the blood.

Triglycerides are accumulated in the blood for future use by converting any unused calories.

In other words, triglycerides are an ester derived from glycerol and three fatty acids (from tri- and glyceride).

Overexpression of hyperglyceridemia is found to patients with atherosclerosis even without the presence of high cholesterol levels, and predispose.

Hypertriglyceridemia can also be accumulated to the arterial wall or combined with other substances to form plaque that narrows the arteries in transporting rich oxygenated blood to the heart and other parts of the body.

There are 2 main sources of plasma triglycerides
* Dietary fat which is carried in chylomicrons.

* Fat is produced by the liver carried in very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) particles.

Primary hypertriglyceridemia is found in 5% of patients associated with genetic preposition compared to 95% of secondary hypertriglyceridemia found in obese metabolic syndrome, diabetes,... patients.

Treating hypertriglyceridemia is difficult, as the condition is frequent coexistence with other conditions that affect cardiovascular disease risks, such as high levels of low-density lipoprotein, obesity, metabolic syndrome, and type 2 diabetes.

In severe cases of hypertriglyceridemia, patients may also experience the complication of acute pancreatitis, independent of the risk of CVD.

Omega-3 fatty acids are phytochemicals in the class of lipids, found abundantly in deepsea fisk, dark-green leafy vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, etc.

The three main components of Omega-3 fatty acids are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of chronic diseases associated with obesity, researchers examined the three omega-3 fatty acids (OM3FA) prescription formulations that are approved in the US for the treatment of adults with severe hypertriglyceridemia.

* (1) OM3FA ethyl esters (OM3EE), a mixture of OM3FA ethyl esters, primarily eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) (Lovaza®, Omtryg™, and generics)

* (2) Icosapent ethyl (IPE), EPA ethyl esters (Vascepa®); and

* (3) omega-3 carboxylic acids (OM3CA), a mixture of OM3FAs in free fatty acid form, primarily EPA, DHA, and docosapentaenoic acid (Epanova®).

According to the tested analysis, although all 3 approved formulations showed a strong effect in the inhibition of diacylglycerol acyltransferase, increased plasma lipoprotein lipase activity, decreased hepatic lipogenesis, and increased hepatic β-oxidation,.OM3FAs appears to be an effective treatment option for patients with severe hypertriglyceridemia.

Most importantly, all three formulations are well tolerated (the most common adverse events are gastrointestinal) and demonstrate a lack of drug-drug interactions with other lipid-lowering drugs, such as statins and fibrates.

Taken altogether, Omega-3 fatty acids may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of hypertriglyceridemia, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Ashwagandha Processes Anti Chronic Inflammatory Diseases Activity

By Kyle J. Norton

Chronic diseases are medical conditions that last more than 3 months depending on the type of diseases.

In other words, chronic diseases generally cannot be prevented or cured by medication, nor do they just disappear.

According to the statistics, chronic diseases affect millions of people worldwide, leading to the death of 35 million people in 2005, including many young people and those in middle age.

The most common types of chronic diseases include cardiovascular diseases, stroke, cancer, chronic respiratory diseases, diabetes, and mental disorders.

Inflammation is a process of the immune system that responds to harmful pathogens.

Inflammation can be acute or chronic. In the acute phase of infection, the immune system after receiving information from the neurons, macrophages, the largest white blood cells in the first line of defense stimulate the production of blood palette to cover the wound and the production of inflammatory cytokines to kill off micro-organisms, leading to symptoms of fever, redness, and swelling.

However, in some cases, the overproduction of proinflammatory cytokines may damage nearby healthy cells and tissues, causing the formation of scars.

In severe cases, a protein with duo functions in the production of pro and anti-inflammatory cytokines which produce anti-inflammatory cytokines under normal condition also switch to produce pro-inflammatory cytokines.

Most cases of acute inflammatory are resolved within a few days without causing damage to the wound tissues.

Chronic inflammatory diseases are the results of the immune system response inability to kill off all infectious pathogens during the acute phase of infection, leading to the immune adaptation to the new change.

In some cases, chronic diseases also are caused by the immune system mistakenly attacking the bodily tissue, leading to low-grade inflammation such as rheumatoid arthritis.

Ashwagandha also is known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, Middle East, and the Mediterranean.

The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered as anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.

On finding a potent compound that processes the chronic diseases, researchers examined the effects of Withanolides, and in particular extracts from Withania somnifera pharmacologic properties on chronic inflammatory diseases.

According to the tested analysis, withanolides exerted a strong anti-inflammatory activity by inhibiting the inflammatory pathways such as NF-κB, JAK/STAT in the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines in inducing chronic illnesses.

The results of withanolides efficacy in reducing the onset of chronic disease was attributed to its activity in mediating the process of proteins associated with the induction of pro-inflammatory pathways against chronic diseases including arthritis, autoimmune, cancer, neurodegenerative, and neurobehavioral.

Additionally, these naturally derived compounds also were found to exhibit remarkable biologic activity across these complex disease processes with only minimal adverse effects.

Based on the results, researchers said, " As novel compounds and analogs continue to be discovered, characterized, and clinically evaluated, the interest in withanolides as a novel therapeutic only continues to grow".

Taken altogether, Ashwagandha may be considered a functional herb for the treatment of chronic inflammatory diseases including Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, pending to the result of larger sample size and multicenter study

Legumes, the Natural Anti Hyperlipidemic Activity

By Kyle J. Norton

Hyperlipidemia is a medical condition of abnormally high levels of cholesterol and fat in the bloodstream.

High blood cholesterol is the most common cause of hyperlipidemia. According to statistics provided by the CDC, more than 12% of adults age 20 and older are living with high blood cholesterol with a total cholesterol higher than 240 mg/dL. and more than 18% had high-density lipoprotein (HDL, or “good”) cholesterol levels less than 40 mg/dL.

In other words, hyperlipidemia has a high prevalent ratio that affects over 100 million of American and the condition is increasing at an alarming rate due to overweight and obesity.

Believe it or not, only half of the people with high blood cholesterol benefits from taking the lowering blood cholesterol medicine.

Cholesterol is a waxy substance produced by the liver. In a moderate amount, it helps to improve the gastrointestinal tract in food digestion, builds strong cell membranes, produces vitamin D and steroid hormones.

Cholesterol can either be produced by the liver or consumed form the food sources. There are 2 types of cholesterol
*The high-density lipoprotein is also known as "good" cholesterol processes a function to return cholesterol to the liver.

* The low-density lipoprotein is also known as "bad" cholesterol processed a function aforementioned health benefits in a moderate amount.

In a healthy individual, the bad cholesterol is returned to the liver. However, overexpression of "bad" cholesterol due to the consumption of a high-fat diet and reduced levels of "good" cholesterol can induce an unhealthy ratio of bad and good cholesterol, leading to bad cholesterol remaining in the bloodstream, a cause of hyperlipidemia.

On finding a potent ingredient for the treatment of diseases associated with high blood cholesterol, researchers investigated the potential health benefits of legumes as a good source of dietary fiber.

The study included the comparison of the anti-high blood cholesterol activity of 6 to 10 local legumes as follows: cowpeas, mung beans, pole sitao, chickpeas, green peas, groundnuts, pigeon peas, kidney beans, lima beans, and soybeans.

According to the tested analysis, all tested legumes were found to have a  low-GI index.

All legumes showed a cholesterol-lowering effect in human subjects with moderately raised serum cholesterol levels, probably due to the increased levels of the high-density lipoprotein.

However,  kidney beans showed significant reductions for both total (6 %) and LDL-cholesterol (9 %), and groundnuts for total cholesterol of 7 %, compared to other legumes

Collectively, researchers said, "legumes are considered low-GI foods and have shown potential hypocholesterolemic effects. The above studies can be a scientific basis for considering legumes as functional foods".

Taken altogether, legumes may be considered functional foods for lowering blood cholesterol,  pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Tocopherols Inhibits the Onset of Diabetes

By Kyle J. Norton

Diabetes is a chronic condition caused by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate the glucose.

In other words, diabetes occurs when cells in the pancreas dying off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol. In some cases, diabetes is also caused by allergic reactions of cells in the immune system.

Most common types of diabetes are
* Type 1 diabetes, also known as juvenile diabetes or insulin-dependent diabetes, the most common form diabetes found in children is a condition in which the pancreas does not produce any insulin. The most common form of type 1 diabetes is caused by genetic mutation and some viruses.

As of today, there is no cure for type 1 diabetes. Treatment is focusing on managing blood sugar levels with insulin injection, diet, and lifestyle change.

* Type 2 diabetes is a medical condition characterized by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate the glucose due to either cell in pancreas dying off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol.

The most common symptoms of type 2 diabetes are an increased thirst that won't stop with water intake, increased hunger (especially after eating), dry mouth, frequent urination, and unintentional weight loss.

* Latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA), similar to type 1 diabetes, is a slow-progressing form of autoimmune diabetes. The disease is caused by the pancreas inability to produce enough insulin, because of slowly die-off of insulin-producing cells in the pancreas.

LADA is also known as type 1.5 diabetes because the disease has characteristics of both type 1 (autoimmune in nature) and type 2 diabetes.

Therefore, LADA shares the same risk factors and symptoms similar to those types 1 and 2 diabetes.

* Gestational diabetes is a form of diabetes that can occur during pregnancy, affecting between 3% and 20% of pregnant women.

Women with gestational diabetes are at an increased risk of type 2 diabetes in later life.

Hyperglycemia, a medical condition of abnormally high blood glucose, is a major concern, in people with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

Most cases of hyperglycemia occurred in patients who do not manage their diabetes properly.

Hyperglycemia, a hallmark of diabetes has been found to induce diabetics complications, including neuropathy, nephropathy, and retinopathy.

Tocopherols are phytochemicals of which many have vitamin E activity, belonging to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in butter, egg yolk, milk fat, some vegetable, and seed or nut oils, etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of chronic diseases, researchers examined cross-sectional relations of dietary intakes and plasma concentrations of antioxidants with glucose metabolism in a high-risk population.

The study included the subjects that were 81 male and 101 female first- and second-degree, nondiabetic relatives of patients with type 2 diabetes with Antioxidant intake data that were based on 3-d food records.

According to the analysis of subjects taking supplements containing beta-carotene or alpha-tocopherol
In men,
* Dietary carotenoids were inversely associated with fasting plasma glucose concentrations (P < 0.05), plasma beta-carotene concentrations were inversely associated with insulin resistance (P = 0.003),

* Dietary lycopene was directly related to baseline serum concentrations of nonesterified fatty acids (P = 0.034).

* In women, dietary alpha-tocopherol and plasma beta-carotene concentrations were inversely and directly associated, respectively, with fasting plasma glucose concentrations (P < 0.05).

In both sexes, cholesterol-adjusted alpha-tocopherol concentrations were directly associated with 2-h plasma glucose concentrations (P < 0.05).

After talking about other factors into account, researchers said, "The data suggest an advantageous association of carotenoids, which are markers of fruit and vegetable intake, with glucose metabolism in men at high risk of type 2 diabetes.".

Taken altogether, tocopherols used alone or combined with beta-carotene may be considered adjunct therapies in the management of diabetes, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of tocopherols in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
