Cruciferous Vegetables Reduces the Risk of Ischemic Strokes

By Kyle J. Norton

Stroke is a medical condition caused by reduced blood flow to the brain resulting in cell death due to blocked artery (ischemic stroke) or the leaking or bursting of a blood vessel (hemorrhagic stroke).

In other words, stroke can be caused by either ischemia, due to lack of blood flow or hemorrhagic, due to bleeding.

A stroke is a medical emergency. Early intervention in most cases can minimize brain damage and potential complications.

Sadly, stroke is one of the most common causes of death worldwide.

In the US, according to statistics, approximately 800,000 people suffer a stroke in which 600,000 of these are first attacks, and 185,000 are recurrent attacks. Nearly three-quarters of all strokes occur in people over the age of 65.

There is a general belief that stroke is an accumulation over a long period of the unhealthy diet with red meat and processed meats in the induction of artery-clogging.

Atherosclerosisassociated with hardening of the arteries caused by the buildup of fatty substances in the arteries can lead to stroke.

In other words, if the blood vessel that feeds the brain is blocked, a stroke occurs.

Some researchers suggested that increased intake of fruits and vegetables such as carrot accompanied with good fats such as salmon, tuna, and mackerel may have a substantial effect in reduced inflammation in the arteries, improved blood flow and decreased the chance of blood clots.

Not all strokes can lead to permanent brain damage. Some people with a temporary disruption of blood flow to the brain do not result in permanent damage.

Besides aging, smoking, medical conditions such as unmanaged high blood pressure and cholesterol and diabetes, obesity, physical inactivity are some of the prevalent factors found in stroke patients.

Cruciferous vegetables are a group of vegetables, belongings to the family Brassicaceae (also called Cruciferae) with many genera, species, and cultivated all over the world in suitable climate for commercial profits, including cauliflower, cabbage, kale, garden cress, bok choy, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and green leafy vegetables.

On finding a potential remedy for reducing the mortality rate of cardiovascular diseases, researchers examined the therapeutic potential and protective effect of D3T found in cruciferous vegetables for the treatment of ischemic stroke.

The study included selected mice subjected to transient middle cerebral artery occlusion/reperfusion (tMCAO/R) were administered with vehicle or D3T to evaluate the effect of D3T in cerebral brain injury.

Based on the results of the experiment,
* D3T reduced infarct size, decreased brain edema, lessened blood-brain barrier disruption, and ameliorated neurological deficits.

* D3T suppressed microglia (MG) activation induced by stroke and inhibited peripheral inflammatory immune cell infiltration of CNS in the ischemic brain.

* D3T also exerted a protective effect on ischemic stroke against the induction of oxidative stress by mediating the improved expression of antioxidant enzyme Nrf2.

Based on the results, researchers said, "D3T confers protection against ischemic stroke, which is mediated through suppression of MG activation and inhibition of CNS peripheral cell infiltration, and that the protective effect of D3T in ischemic stroke is dependent on the activation of Nrf2".
Taken altogether, cruciferous vegetables may be considered functional remedies for the protection in ischemic strokes, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Moronic acid, The Potential Anti-inflammatory Antioxidant

By Kyle J. Norton

Inflammation is a natural defense of the immune system that protects the body against the insult from the foreign invasion.

In other words, inflammation is a process of the immune system that responds to harmful pathogens.

In the acute phase of infection, the immune system after receiving information from the neurons, macrophages, the largest white blood cells in the first line of defense stimulate the production of blood palette to cover the wound and the production of inflammatory cytokines to kill off micro-organisms, leading to symptoms of fever, redness, and swelling.

Acute inflammation occurs quickly or within the hours and lasts a few days or weeks and the damaged tissues are healed themselves after all pathogens are killed off.

However, if the immune system can not completely eradicate all invaders in the acute phase of infection, it will compromise, leading to chronic low-grade inflammation, a major cause of cardiovascular disease, arthritis, and diabetes.

Any inflammation that lasts more than 8 weeks is considered chronic inflammation.

In some cases, the overproduction of proinflammatory cytokines may damage nearby healthy cells and tissues, causing the formation of scars.

In severe cases, a protein with duo functions in the production of pro and anti-inflammatory cytokines which produce anti-inflammatory cytokines under normal condition also switch to produce pro-inflammatory cytokines.

Chronic inflammation is a low-grade inflammation caused by the inability of the immune system to eliminate the invasive pathogens that occurred in the acute phase of infection.

In the US, chronic inflammatory diseases affect more than 50 million Americans each year.

Conventionally, Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are the most common medical drugs such as aspirin. ibuprofen in reducing inflammation associated with pain-relieving.

Moronic acid is a phytochemical in the subclass of Triterpenoid, belonging to the group of Terpenes found in extracted from Rhus javanica, Mistletoe, etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of inflammatory diseases, researchers examined the FS-3 fraction, obtained from the dichloromethane extract isolated from B. cuneata, comprised triterpenes β-sitosterol (1), α-amyrin (2), moronic acid (3), and ursolic acid (4) on inflammation.

Comparison to indomethacin (41.5 ± 0.6%) treatment at 0.1 mg/mouse ear, moronic acid displayed the highest inhibitory effect (68.1 ± 1.3%).

In HPLC treated tissues. moronic acid was the most active (73.3 ± 1.1%, indomethacin 33.8 ± 0.8%) in the inhibition of levels of histamine involved in the inflammatory response.

* Moronic acid was the principal anti-inflammatory and antihistaminic compound present in B. cuneata.

Most importantly, moronic acid showed a strong activity on the activation of RAW 264.7 cell stimulated with LPS, at 30 and 15 mg/mL and a significant reduction of ON (36% and 28% respectively) but had no significant effect on TNFα production.

Taken altogether, moronic acid may be considered supplements for the treatment of diseases associated with inflammation, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of moronic acid in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Angelica in the Promotion of Strong Bones

By Kyle J. Norton

Bone is a hard whitish tissue making up the skeleton in humans which provides a framework for the attachment of muscles and other tissues.

Bone density is the amount of bone mineral in bone tissue. Loss of bone density is found to induce osteoporosis.

Bone density is measured by the young adult bone density mean within 1 standard deviation (+1 or −1). The negative T-score is an indication of loss or lower bone density and the T-score of −2.5 or lower is an indication of osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis is a condition of thinning of bone and bone tissues as a result of the loss of bone density over a long period of time.

The condition is a widespread degenerative disease of skeletal joints and often associated with senescence invertebrates due to excessive or abnormal mechanical loading of weight-bearing joints, arising from heavy long-term use or specific injuries.

The exact causes of osteoporosis are unknown. Neither researchers understood that people with the same health conditions are affected by the imbalance between new bone formation and bone resorption while others do not.

However, researchers do know that certain risk factors such as a lid to increase lifelong calcium-deficient diet, age, female, family history,.... bone structure and overweight are associated with the early onset of osteoporosis.

Furthermore, long-term intake of certain medications such as prednisone and a medical condition such as rheumatoid arthritis are also the osteoporosis prevalent risk factors

According to the statistic, 1 in 3 women and 1 in 5 men older than 50 will suffer from an osteoporosis fracture, worldwide.

Angelica or Dang Qui is a herb of Genus Angelica from the family Apiaceae, indigenous to China.

The herb has been used as a Queen herb in traditional Chinese medicine antispasmodic and vasodilatory agent, and to balance the hormones in women for a normal menstrual cycle and menstruation and strengthen heart, spleen, kidneys, and liver for both men and women, etc. In other words, it is used to treat gynecological ailments, fatigue, mild anemia, and high blood pressure. It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, etc.

On finding a potential herbal medicine for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis, researchers examined the Angelicapolysaccharide (AP), the main component of angelica on mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) proliferation and osteoblast differentiation.

According to the results of MSCs treated with different concentrations of AP, AP significantly promoted cell viability, upregulated cyclin D1 associated with progression through the G1 phase of the cell cycle. and increased RUNX2, OCN, ALP, and BMP-2 protein levels involved in osteoblast differentiation in MSCs.

Additionally, AP notably activated PI3K/AKT and Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathways that maintain the integrity of bone mass maintenance by regulating the activity of the bone-forming osteoblasts in MSCs.

Moreover, the administration of AP also upregulated the relative expression level of H19 which has been found to induce osteogenesis and promote trabecular bone growth in a dose-dependent manner.

In other words, the mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) analysis suggested that AP protects bone density by increasing the bone cell formation.

More importantly, in vivo experimentation, the results also indicated a further confirmation of the promoting effect of AP on bone formation.

Taken altogether, Herbal Angelica may be considered a remedy for the protection of bone density, pending to larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Omega 3 Fatty Acid Protects the Liver Against the Onset of Cirrhosis in Vivo

By Kyle J. Norton

The liver is the largest internal organ found in the human which plays an essential role in filtering the blood from the digestive system before passing them to other parts of the body.

The liver also produces cholesterol, a waxy substance which aids digestion, builds cell membranes and produces vitamin D and steroid hormones.

Liver disease is a class of medical conditions characterized by the reduction partly or completely the function of the liver, including liver failure.

More precisely, the liver disease causes a reduced function in toxin elimination of liver as a result of damage or injury, caused by medication, viral infection...
Liver cirrhosis is a condition of abnormal function of the liver due to damage liver tissue replaced by scar tissue.

In other words, cirrhosis is an irreversible scarring liver as a result of liver tissue by fibrosis due to the final phase of chronic liver diseases that can lead to poor function of the liver and liver failure.

According to the statistics, the number of discharges with chronic liver disease or cirrhosis as the first-listed diagnosis: 101,000 in 2009 and deaths per 100,000 population: 10.3 in 2010(a). Hepatitis B infection cause of the disease is very prevalent in South-East Asia.

According to statistics, the risk of liver cirrhosis is 1.6% in the adult population.

Most common risk factors associated with the onset of cirrhosis are
Risk factors
* Gender
Females who are chronic alcohol drinkers are at an increase to develop Cirrhosis.

* Diabetes mellitus (DM)
If you are diabetic, you are associated with an increased risk of cirrhosis. According to the study by the University Hospital, Monterrey, about 30% of patients with cirrhosis have diabetes mellitus (DM).

* Excessive alcohol drinking
People who drink abusively, in the most case died as a result of the progression of liver diseases.

* Medication-induced cirrhosis
Certain medications may cause an increased risk of cirrhosis to the takers, such as anti-tuberculosis

* Age
The risk of cirrhosis is increased with the progression of age.

* Obesity
The risk of cirrhosis is increased for obese people. In the study to evaluate the role of obesity.

* Heredity
Alpha-1-anti-trypsin deficiency is the most common genetic cause of liver disease in children.

* Toxins
Toxins can damage the liver.

Omega-3 fatty acids are phytochemicals in the class of lipids, found abundantly in deepsea fisk, dark-green leafy vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, etc.

The three main components of Omega-3 fatty acids are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of liver diseases, researchers examined the effect of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFA) on liver regeneration of rats with liver cirrhosis after hepatectomy.

According to the results of Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids intravenously injected in n-3 PUFA group 3 days before the operation to 1 day after partial hepatectomy,
* Liver regeneration was significantly delayed compared with PH group 7 days after hepatectomy (PH) in LC+PH group.

* Liver regeneration of LC+n-3 PUFA*+PH group increased significantly compared with LC+PH group 7 days after PH.

* In LC+PH group, liver cirrhotic was significantly higher compared with LC+n-3 PUFA+PH group 7 days after PH.

* Furthermore, liver cirrhosis of LC+n-3 PUFA*+PH group was significantly reduced compared with LC+n-3 PUFA+PH group 7 days after PH.

* More importantly, anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10 was increased and pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-6 was decreased in LC+n-3 PUFA*+PH group compared with LC+PH group.

Based on the findings, researchers said, " N-3 PUFA also suppressed increments in mRNA expression for transforming growth factor-β and up-regulated the expression of matrix metalloproteinase-9 and matrix metalloproteinase-1 in the liver".

Taken altogether, Omega-3 fatty acids may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of liver cirrhosis, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Field Mustard Modulates the Apoptotic and Inflammatory Responses

By Kyle J. Norton

The inflammatory response (inflammation) is the reaction of the immune system to target the tissues injured by trauma, toxins, heat, and pathogens.

Inflammation is a natural immune response that protects our body against the invasion of stimuli and foreign pathogens.

During the acute phase of infection, the immune first line of defense activates the protein associated with the production of blood palettes to cover the wound and inflammatory cytokines to the site of injury with an aim to prevent and kill off microorganisms.

However, overproduction of inflammatory cytokines not only can induce fever, swelling, and pain to the affected area but also damage to the nearby cells and tissue, leading to the formation of scars.

Chronic inflammatory diseases are the class of conditions involved in low-grade inflammation to the affect tissue or organ. Some researchers suggested that the immune system has evolved over thousands of years to kill off the foreign invasive pathogens within a period of time, normally between 3 to 8 weeks. If the immune fails to do so, it will adapt to the new change, leading to chronic inflammation.

There are several factors that cause the onset of the conditions. Some scientists indicated untreated acute inflammation, such as an infection or injury and an autoimmune disorder involved immune system mistakenly attacking healthy tissue are the most causes of chronic inflammatory diseases.

People with a strong immune system, during the acute phase of infection, the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines are balanced by the expression of anti-inflammatory cytokines without affecting the immune activity.

However, in children, the elderly and people with the weakened immune system, overexpression of proinflammatory cytokines can damage the nearby cells and tissue, leading to the formation of scars.

On finding a potential plant that improves the apoptotic and inflammatory responses, researchers compared the effects of field mustard polysaccharides (BRPs) on acute liver injury induced by carbon tetrachloride (CCl4).

According to the results of mice that were treated with CCl4 after the oral administration of BRPs (55, 110 and 220 mg/kg) or bifendate (100 mg/kg) for 7 days, BRP pre-treatment significantly decreased the liver toxic markers MDA, ALT, ALP, and AST in the serum, by increasing the levels of SOD and GSH-Px in the liver.

BRPs pretreatment was found to alleviate the hepatocyte injury by inhibiting the expression of proinflammatory proteins and pathways, such as TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6, and the CCl4 -induced hepatic tissue apoptosis caspase-3.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "This study demonstrated that BRPs exert hepatoprotective effect against the CCl4 -induced liver injury via modulating the apoptotic and inflammatory responses and downregulating the JAK2/STAT3 signaling pathway".

Taken altogether, field mustard may be considered a functional food to enhance the apoptotic and inflammatory responses, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Cranberry Speeds Up Wound Healing

By Kyle J. Norton

Wound healing is the natural process of repair of skin damage and injury.

The process of skin healing in humans is gone through several stages. First, the immune system after sensing the skin wound activates the immune first-line defense stimulating the constriction of the blood vessel to reduce blood flow, activate platelets, and many different clotting factors to cover the wound area.

Then, the white blood cells also up-regulate the proteins associated with the production of proinflammatory cytokines to the site of infection to kill off all the invasive organisms.

In most cases, due to the overproduction of proinflammatory cytokines, patients may experience symptoms of fever, and localized pain, redness, and swelling.

The process of wound healing involves 4 phases
* The first phase of wound healing is cover up the wound. In this phase, the immune first line of defense white blood cells stimulates the emergency repair system in the production of blood clotting to block the drainage.

* In phase 2, the white blood cells activates the proteins associated with the inflammatory cytokines to destroy the pathogens before they can enter the body through the wound.

* In phase 3, new blood vessels and tissues are formed in the damage and injury area.

* The recovery phase.

However, the healing process is easier said than done, the complex process in many cases can be interrupted by local and systemic factors, including moisture, infection, age, and nutritional status, leading to the formation of scar

Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belongings to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia. Because of its health benefits, cranberry has been cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.

On finding a potential compound for the promotion of skin healing, researchers compared the pharmacological properties of the phytochemical constituents present in oils of cranberry on wound healing.

Selected animals in the study were divided into four groups of six each (n = 6) as follow,
* The experimental group 1 and 2 animals were treated topically with the grape and cranberry oil (100 mg/kg body weight), respectively.

* The controls were treated with petroleum jelly.

* The standard group of animals was treated with mupirocin ointment (100 mg/kg body weight).

According to the healing process assays,
* On day 13, animals treated with cranberry oil showed a better reduction in the wound area of 88.1%  compared with grape-oil treated of 84.6%, 74.1% in control and 78.4% in standard group animals.

* Furthermore, the hydroxyproline content of the granulation tissue was significantly higher in the animals treated with cranberry and the grape-oil compared to control and standard groups.

In other words, cranberry oil exerted the strongest effects in the promotion of wound healing compared to other experimental groups.

Collectively, researchers wrote, "Comparative investigation of the curative properties of the oils of V. vinifera and V. macrocarpon revealed a significant result which suggests their wound-healing potential".

Taken altogether, cranberry oil may be considered a topical remedy for speeding up wound healing, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Beta-Sitosterol Shows a Protective Effect on Alzheimer's

By Kyle J. Norton

Neurological diseases are the medical conditions of brain disorder. Anything that involves the structural, biochemical or electrical abnormalities in the brain, spinal cord or other nerves, including brain damage are considered neuro diseases.

The most common neurodegenerative diseases in the elderly are dementia. Depending on the brain regions that are damaged or dysfunction, dementia can be Parkinson's, Alzheimer's,...and Huntington's disease.

Genetic mutation inherited from parents such as the NOTCH3 gene is the most common autosomal dominant that cause of stroke and vascular dementia.

Neurodegenerative diseases are a class of conditions associated with the progressive loss of neurons in the brain caused by several mechanisms, including toxicity and oxygen deficiency.

Dementia is a cluster of conditions included Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and Huntington’s disease, leading to a negative influence on the body's functioning, including balance, movement, talking, breathing, and heart function.

There is no single cause of the progressive death of brain neurons. Epidemiologically, genetic preposition, medical conditions, such as alcoholism, brain cancer or a stroke in the brain are some of the most common prevalent factors found in patients with neurological diseases.

A most common form of neurodegenerative diseases in North America is Alzheimer's disease (AD).

Alzheimer's disease is a brain disorder correlated with major reductions of neurons to the respective target areas through destruction of brain cells, causing cognitive modalities severe enough to affect language communication, memory, lifelong hobbies or social life. Alzheimer's gets worse over time, and it is fatal.

According to statistics, over 25 million people in the world today are affected by dementia and most are suffering from Alzheimer's disease.

Beta-Sitosterol is a phytochemical in the class of Phytosterols, belongings to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in avocados, rice bran, wheat germ, corn oils, fennel, peanuts, soybeans, hawthorn, basil, buckwheat. etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the prevention and treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, researchers elucidated the effects of sterol β-Sitosterol on the production of platelet Aβ in Alzheimer's disease (AD).

According to the results in learning and memory in amyloid protein precursor/presenilin 1 (APP/PS1) double transgenic mice which were treated with β-Sitosterol for four weeks,
* β-Sitosterol treatment improved spatial learning and recognition memory ability, and reduced plaque load in APP/PS1 mice.

* β-Sitosterol treatment reversed dendritic spine loss in APP/PS1 mice and reversed the decreased hippocampal neuron miniature excitatory postsynaptic current frequency.

In other words, β-Sitosterol demonstrated a neuroprotective effect which may offer a novel pharmaceutical agent for the treatment of AD.

Based on the findings, researchers said, " these findings suggest that β-Sitosterol ameliorates memory and learning impairment in APP/PS1 mice and possibly decreases Aβ deposition".
Beta-Sitosterol may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of AD, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of beta-Sitosterol in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
