Omega 3 Fatty Acids, A promising Anti Chronic Cerebral Hypoperfusion Remedy

By Kyle J. Norton

Chronic cerebral hypoperfusion is a medical condition associated with the small vessel diseases or atherosclerosis of multiple large vessels found mostly in people who are cognitive normal elderly and patients who have cognitive impairment.

Acute cerebral hypoperfusion has been found to induce neuronal necrosis and infarction, compared to chronic cerebral hypoperfusion that causes the apoptosis of neurons.

A neuron or nerve cell made of a cell body (also called soma), dendrites and an axon, is a cell in the nervous system that carries electrical impulses.

Neurons are core components of the brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves that play an essential role to process and transmit information.

The function of neurons can be classified into 3 types
* The sensory neurons found within the nervous system that convert external stimuli from the organism's environment into internal electrical impulses. In other words, sensory neurons are activated by sensory input from the environment, including physical input of sound, touch, heat, or light.

*The motor neurons transmit impulses from the spinal cord to skeletal and smooth muscles,. In other words, motor neurons directly control all of the muscle movements.

* The interneurons connect the motor and sensory neurons. In other words, the interneurons transfer signals between sensory and motor neurons.

Neurons are core components of the brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves that play an essential role to process and transmit information.

Cerebrovascular disease is a common cause of Alzheimer's disease (AD).

Omega-3 fatty acids are phytochemicals in the class of lipids, found abundantly in deepsea fisk, dark-green leafy vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, etc.

The three main components of Omega-3 fatty acids are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

On finding a potential plant that processes neuroprotective activity researchers examined the effect of gamma-linolenic acid in the rat brain tissues after bilateral common carotid artery occlusion (BCCAO) rat model of chronic cerebral hypoperfusion.

According to the results of the analysis,
* Arachidonic acid (ARA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), dihomo-γ-linolenic acid, hydroxyeicosatetraenoic (HETE)-Ala and glycerophosphoethanolamine levels were significantly reduced in the hippocampus and cortex of animals submitted to BCCAO model when compared to control animals.

* Decanoic acid was increased after 30 days of BCCAO model.

Collectively, researchers said, "these findings indicate that lipid dynamics are altered in chronic ischemia-induced by BCCAO in rats and indicate potential biomarkers and pharmacological targets for vascular dementia (VD)".

Taken altogether, omega3 fatty acids may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of chronic cerebral hypoperfusion,, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Ashwagandha Inhibits β-amyloid Against the Risk of Alzheimer's disease

By Kyle J. Norton

Amyloid beta (Aβ or Abeta) is the main component of the amyloid plaques that cause the gradual death of neurons, the leading cause of Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease is a common form of dementia or neurodegenerative disease found in the elderly.

Alzheimer's disease is a type of dementia correlated with major reductions of neurons to the respective target areas, named after German physician Alois Alzheimer.

According to the statistics, the disease is most prevalent in the elderly. Approximately 5.7 million Americans of all ages are living with Alzheimer's. 15.9 million family caregivers provide an estimated 18.2 billion hours and $230 billion to people with dementia worldwide.

Alzheimer's disease is caused by a combination of genetic, lifestyle and environmental factors that affect the neurons of the brain over time.

However, less 10% of patients with AD are associated with a genetic preposition. Patients with such mutated genes on chromosomes 21, 14, and 1are virtually guaranteed to develop the disease.

More precisely, Alzheimer's disease is caused by the gradual loss of neuron functioning that usually starts with the early symptom of the difficulty of remembering recent events and worsens over time.

Alzheimer's destroys brain cells, causing cognitive modalities severe enough to affect language communication, memory, lifelong hobbies or social life. Alzheimer's gets worse over time, and it is fatal.

Ashwagandha also is known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, Middle East, and the Mediterranean.

The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered as anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.

On finding a potent compound for the treatment of the neurodegenerative disorder, researchers examined the effects of Withania somnifera (WS) against β-Amyloid (1–42)-induced neuropathogenesis.

According to the tested results, methanol Chloroform (3:1) extract from ashwagandha showed a strong activity against β-amyloid induced toxicity and HIV-1Ba-L (clade B) induced infection in a human neuronal SK-N-MC cell line.

Furthermore, the efficacy of the extracts inhibited β-amyloid induced cytotoxic effects by decreasing the cell growth in SK-N-MC cells.

Moreover, the extracts also protect the spine functioning by decreasing spine density, loss of spines and dendrite diameter, total dendrite and spine area in clade B infected SK-N-MC cells compared to uninfected cells.

Additionally, the MTT cell viability assays and the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ (PPARγ) levels that regulate adipogenesis, lipid metabolism, cell proliferation, and inflammation also supported the neuroprotective effect of WS root extract against β-amyloid and HIV-1Ba-L (clade B) induced neuro-pathogenesis.

Taken altogether, Ashwagandha may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and treatment of Alzheimer's disease, pending to the result of larger sample size and multicenter study

Healthy Food Cruciferous Vegetables, the Potential Treatment of Neurological Disorders

By Kyle J. Norton

Neurological disorders are medical conditions characterized by any disorder of the nervous system caused by structural, biochemical or electrical abnormalities.

There are many forms of neurological disorders. The most common types of the disease are neurodegenerative disease, such as Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Parkinson's disease, epilepsy. multiple sclerosis and Migraines.

Back pain associated with the related nerve damage is one of the common complaints in the US that send many patients to seek help from their doctor. Believe it or not, 80% of the US population will experience back pain at some time in their lives.

There is no single cause of neuro-dysfunction. Lifestyle, infections, genetics, and nutrition-related disease, environment, and physical injuries have been found to some major prevalent factors that induce the onset of neurological abnormalities.

According to the Medical press, globally, the burden of neurological disorders (Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, stroke, epilepsy, etc) has increased substantially over the past 25 years. These may be results of over 25 years of economic expansion that have increased the living standard of billions of people in the Southeast Asian region.

The WHO in the evaluation of neurological disorder wrote, "Neurological disorders contribute to 92 million disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) in 2005 projected to increase to 103 million in 2030 (approximately a 12% increase). While Alzheimer's and other dementias are projected to show a 66% increase from 2005 to 2030".

Where one DALY represents the loss of the equivalent of one year of full health.

Believe it or not, there are more than 600 diseases of the central nervous system, including brain tumors, epilepsy, dementia such as Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease and stroke.

Cruciferous vegetables are a group of vegetables, belongings to the family Brassicaceae (also called Cruciferae) with many genera, species, and cultivated all over the world in suitable climate for commercial profits, including cauliflower, cabbage, kale, garden cress, bok choy, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and green leafy vegetables.

On finding a potential remedy for the protection of the brain functioning, researchers examined the effects of cruciferous vegetables are a key part of the arsenal of nutrition-based approaches for reducing the risks of neurological disorders.

According to the search of related articles, in animal model systems, cruciferous vegetables exerted the protective activity against neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases.

In chemical analysis, the efficacy of crucifers in the inhibition of the onset and progression of neurological disorders was attributed to its most abundant bioactive compound the isothiocyanates, particularly sulforaphane.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "There is great promise for the regular use of cruciferous vegetables or supplements containing standardized levels of bioactive in the treatment and prevention of neurologic disorders".

And, " Many clinical and animal studies are underway, and the evidence is building to support this strategy".

Taken altogether, cruciferous vegetables may be considered functional remedies for the prevention of neurological disorders, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Beta-Sitosterol A Potential Treatment of Menopausal Symptoms

By Kyle J. Norton

Menopause is a condition in which a woman is in the transition stage of permanent cessation of the ovaries functions in egg production because of less production of estrogen and progesterone, signaling the end of the reproductive phase a woman's life.

In menopause, menstruation has become irregular and slowly stop overtime, but in some women, menstrual flow comes to a sudden halt.

Some researchers suggested that you officially enter the stage of menopause if you have gone 12 months without a menstrual period.

Compared to menopause, peri-menopause is a condition in which women experience the irregular menstrual cycle due to the hormonal decline gradually, including shorter, longer, heavy, light periods and some menopause symptoms.

Perimenopause, in fact, is a transition stage to menopause, and the length of this transition can be 3-10 years or longer. Once you have no menstrual period in 12 consecutive months, you have officially entered 12 months of menopause already.

Women enter the menopause stage differently, but the average age is 51 in the United States.

Women with ovarian failure or removed may experience symptoms of menopause at early age 38.

Symptoms of menopause are the result of the gradually reduced production of estrogen and progesterone, the 2 most abundant hormone in the childbearing age women.

Most women in the Western world experience symptoms of hot flashes and emotional symptoms of menopause may disrupt your sleep, lower your energy or affect emotional health.

Beta-Sitosterol is a phytochemical in the class of Phytosterols, belongings to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in avocados, rice bran, wheat germ, corn oils, fennel, peanuts, soybeans, hawthorn, basil, buckwheat. etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of menopausal symptoms, researchers elucidated the biological activities of Pueraria lobata (PL) on menopause-related metabolic diseases.

According to the results of ovariectomized (OVX) rats as a postmenopausal model that were administered PL at different doses (50, 100, and 200 mg/kg),
* The decreased uterine weights and PPAR-γ (peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma) mRNA expression in the thigh muscle found in menopausal females in the ovariectomized (OVX) rats were significantly recovered after PL administration.

* Furthermore, PL also significantly alleviated OVX-induced increases in total cholesterol, triglyceride, alanine aminotransferase (ALT/GPT), and aspartate aminotransferase (AST/GOT) levels.

More precisely, the efficacy of Pueraria lobata (PL) on menopause-related metabolic diseases was attributed to four potential active compounds, including beta-sitosterol.

In other words, the chemical compounds exerted a strong activity against multiple targets among female sex hormone-related pathways, including the estrogen signaling pathways, progesterone-mediated oocyte maturation, oxytocin signaling pathways, and prolactin signaling pathways.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "PL improved various indicators associated with lipid metabolism in the postmenopausal animal model".

Beta-Sitosterol may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of menopausal symptoms, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of beta-Sitosterol in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Angelica Inhibits Lipid Oxidation in Vivo

By Kyle J. Norton

Lipids are insoluble substances or chemicals,. Lipids are the main constituents of plant and animal cells.

Lipid oxidation is a condition of oxidative lipid generation.

In other words, the molecule in the lipid has an unpaired electron in the outer ring.

Free radicals are unstable atoms that have an unpaired electron in the outer most ring. In order to become stable, they must donate or intercept an electron from other stable atoms, leading to a chain reaction that can not be stopped until all electrons in the outer ring are paired or inhibited by antioxidants.

Overexpression of free radicals caused by depletion of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host body has been found epidemiologically inducing protein and lipid damage and alternation of cell DNA in facilitating the risk of chronic diseases.

Cholesterol and triglycerides are lipids.

Triglyceride is fat in the blood that comes from the outside source used by the body to convert to energy.

Triglyceride is stored in the fat cells used to produced energy between meals and in the case when food is scarce.

Compared to cholesterol, triglycerides at high levels are also associated with the risk of heart disease, particularly in people with high levels of LDL and low levels of HDL.

Evolutionally, fat accumulation is considered a defense mechanism in the human body where excess fat is stored when food is plentiful and release to produce energy when food is scarce.

Cholesterol is a waxy substance that is produced either by the liver or injected from animal food sources.

Cholesterol found in our body is needed for our body to build cell walls, hormones, and vitamin D, and create bile salts that aid digestion. However, too much of them, in most cases due to the intake of animal protein can cause plaques built up on the arterial wall, the major cause of heart disease and stroke.

Diseases associated with lipid oxidation are atherosclerosis, ischemia-reperfusion, heart failure, Alzheimer's disease, rheumatic arthritis, cancer, and other immunological disorders

Angelica or Dang Qui is a herb of Genus Angelica from the family Apiaceae, indigenous to China.

The herb has been used as a Queen herb in traditional Chinese medicine antispasmodic and vasodilatory agent, and to balance the hormones in women for a normal menstrual cycle and menstruation and strengthen heart, spleen, kidneys, and liver for both men and women, etc. In other words, it is used to treat gynecological ailments, fatigue, mild anemia, and high blood pressure. It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, etc.

On findings a potential compound for the treatment of oxidative stress, researchers examined the effect of the extracts of Angelica Sinensis (EAs) on lipid oxidation in fish feeds compared with ethoxyquin (EQ).

The study included fish fed respectively added with EQ, and ethyl ether extract, ethyl acetate extract (EAE), acetone extract, ethanol extract (EE) and aqueous extract (AQE) of Angelica Sinensis, except for the control.

According to the tested analysis, EAs and EQ showed an inhibition of the levels of lipid oxidation in fish feeds.

However, compared to all extracts in EAs, the EAE showed the strongest protective effects against lipid oxidation.

Furthermore, EAE at high concentrations showed a stronger effect on lipid oxidation compared with EQ.

Taken altogether, Herbal Angelica processes anti- lipid-oxidation activity, pending to larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Tocopherol, A Potential Ingredient for the Treatment of Hyperlipidemia

By Kyle J. Norton

Cholesterol is a waxy substance produced by the liver. In a moderate amount, it helps to improve the gastrointestinal tract in food digestion, builds strong cell membranes, produces vitamin D and steroid hormones.

Hyperlipidemia is a medical condition of abnormally high levels of cholesterol and fat in the bloodstream.

In other words, hyperlipidemia is a chronic condition of abnormally high levels of any or all lipoproteins in the bloodstream, including cholesterol and triglycerides.

High blood cholesterol is the most common cause of hyperlipidemia. According to statistics provided by the CDC, more than 12% of adults age 20 and older are living with high blood cholesterol with a total cholesterol higher than 240 mg/dL. and more than 18% had high-density lipoprotein (HDL, or “good”) cholesterol levels less than 40 mg/dL.

In other words, hyperlipidemia has a high prevalent ratio that affects over 100 million Americans and the condition is increasing at an alarming rate due to overweight and obesity.

Believe it or not, only half of the people with high blood cholesterol benefits from taking the lowering blood cholesterol medicine.

There are many risk factors that cause the onset of hyperlipidemia, such as people with diabetes, being overweight gain, physical activity, and smoking.

Some researchers suggested the promotion of a high-fat diet over the past decades may be one of the silent cause of hyperlipidemia in the Western world.

Tocopherols are phytochemicals of which many have vitamin E activity, belonging to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in butter, egg yolk, milk fat, some vegetable, and seed or nut oils, etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of chronic diseases, researchers compared the effect of consumption of virgin olive oils (VOOs) enriched with (a) their own PC (FVOO) and (b) their own PC plus complimentary ones from thyme (FVOOT) could improve HDL status and function. Thirty-three hypercholesterolemic individuals ingested (25 ml/day, 3 weeks) (a) VOO (80 ppm), (b) FVOO (500 ppm) and (c) FVOOT (500 ppm) on HDL-related markers.

According to the results of the randomized, double-blind, controlled, crossover trial, α-tocopherol, the main HDL antioxidant, was only augmented after FVOOT versus its baseline.

In other words, the complementary phenol-enriched olive oil being the one that increased the main HDL antioxidant, α-tocopherol.

Long-term consumption of phenol-enriched olive oils showed a strong implication on the improvement of HDL antioxidant content.

Therefore, complementary phenol-enriched olive oil could be a useful dietary tool for improving HDL richness in antioxidants.

Taken altogether, tocopherols may be considered an adjunct therapy in the treatment of hyperlipidemia, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of tocopherols in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Cranberry, a Potential Anti-Intestinal Inflammatory Whole Food

By Kyle J. Norton

Intestinal inflammation is an infection of the gastrointestinal tract.

Inflammation is the natural response of the immune system macrophages, the first line of defense in stimulating the production of inflammatory cytokines to protect our body against the infection caused by foreign microorganisms during the acute phase of body damage and injury.

Most cases of infection associated with inflammation are stopped at the acute phase. The wound or injury is slowly recovered.

However, overexpression of inflammatory cytokines in most cases can cause improper healing with scar formation or the death of nearby cells.

Any inflammation that lasts more than 3 months is considered chronic inflammation.

Chronic inflammation is the result of the immune system's inability to kill off all the microorganisms participated in the acute phase of infection, leading to the forming of autoimmune and chronic inflammatory diseases such as RA and diabetes.

The most common symptoms of intestinal inflammation are diarrhea with or without blood, abdominal pain, and cramping, fever, the urgency to have a bowel movement.

Conventionally, anti-inflammatories include corticosteroids and aminosalicylates, such as mesalamine (Asacol HD, Delzicol, others), balsalazide (Colazal) and olsalazine (Dipentum) are the first-line medicines used for the treatment of intestinal inflammation.

Anti-inflammation is the process that inhibits inflammation or swelling without affecting the immune property to curb foreign pathogens.

Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belongings to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia. Because of its health benefits, cranberry has been cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.

On finding a potential compound for the protection of the digestive system, researchers investigated the effects of a cranberry extract (CE) in intestinal inflammation on high fat/high sucrose (HFHS)-mice.
The study included selected C57BL/6J mice fed either a chow or a HFHS diet. HFHS-fed mice that were gavaged daily either with vehicle (water) or CE (200 mg/kg) for 8 weeks.

According to tested results, CE treatment was found to reduce HFHS-induced weight gain and visceral obesity associated with chronic inflammatory diseases.

* Furthermore, CE treatment also decreased liver weight and triglyceride accumulation in association with blunted hepatic and intestinal oxidative stress and inflammation.

* CE treatment was found to lower intestinal triglyceride content and to alleviate intestinal inflammation and oxidative stress. Interestingly, CE treatment markedly increased the proportion of the mucin-degrading bacterium Akkermansia in our metagenomic samples.

Based on the evidence, researchers said, "CE exerts beneficial metabolic effects through improving HFHS diet-induced features of the metabolic syndrome, which is associated with a proportional increase in Akkermansia spp".

Taken altogether, cranberry combined with conventional medicines may be considered a gastric protective remedy for the management of intestinal inflammation pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
