The liver is the largest internal organ found in the human which plays an essential role in filtering the blood from the digestive system before passing them to other parts of the body.
Cholesterol produced by the liver plays an essential role in aiding digestion, building cell membranes and producing vitamin D and steroid hormones.
However, excessive amounts of cholesterol in the blood have been found to induce plaque built-up on the arterial wall, leading to heart disease and stroke.
Hypercholesterolemia is a condition characterized by abnormally high levels of cholesterol in the bloodstream.
The cause of hypercholesterolemia is a result of overexpression of low-density lipoprotein with reduced levels of high-density lipoprotein in the blood.
Believe it or not, cholesterol produced by the liver or from outside sources is essential for the building of the strong cell membranes, the production of steroid hormone and vitamin D.
Compared to hypercholesterolemia, the healthy levels of LDL/HDL are any numbers that are less than 4.
Patients with familial hyper cholesterol may experience symptoms of chest pain with activity. xanthomas, and cholesterol deposits around the eyelids.
According to the statistics provided by the CDC, hypercholesterolemia is a major risk factor of heart disease, a leading cause of death in the US. In the US, approximately, 71 million American adults (33.5%) have high low-density lipoprotein (LDL), or “bad,” cholesterol, and only 1 out of every 3 adults with high LDL cholesterol has the condition under control.
Sadly, only 50% of people hypercholesterolemia are getting treatment.

Phytosterols, which encompass plant sterols and stanols, are phytosterols, similar to cholesterol found in plants
On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment against high blood cholesterol, researchers investigated the phytosterol effects on hypercholesterolemia.
A total of 28 patients with primary hyperlipoproteinemia [19X lipoprotein (LP) type IIA, 8X type IIB and 1X a normolipidaemic patient with concurrent hyperapoB lipoproteinaemia] included in the study were given for a period of three weeks a dietetic preparation containing phytosterols - 12 g/day.
According to the experimental results,
* Phytostero dietetic preparation showed a strong activity lowering the total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol in plasma.
* Furthermore, The application also increased the cholesterol concentration in HDL and both its fractions however, the differences were not significant.
* No change of the levels of triglyceride levels
* The levels of apolipoprotein B (apo-B) concentration in LDL involved in the metabolism of lipids were significantly reduced by the application without inducing a change of apo-A-I in plasma that transport lipid in the blood.
Most importantly, the application demonstrated a drop of atherogenic indexes TC/HDL-C, LDL-C/HDL-C, and apo-B/-A-I. associated with hyper cholesterol in the blood.
Based on the findings, researchers wrote, "Discrimination analysis of parameters of the lipoprotein metabolism and the patients' body weight before treatment helps to assess a function by means of which it is possible in 92.3% of the subjects to predict the success of treatment before the administration of beta-sitosterol".
Taken altogether, beta-Sitosterol may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of inflammation, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of beta-Sitosterol in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
