Herbal Ashwagandha Inhibits the Onset of Progression of HIV Infection

By Kyle J. Norton

Human immunodeficiency virus -1 (HIV-1) is one of 2 types of HIV precipitated of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), transmitted through direct contact with HIV-infected body fluids, including blood, semen, and genital secretions,...

Human immunodeficiency virus HIV-1 is the most widespread type worldwide that can lead to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).

Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is a chronic condition caused by the infection of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

According to the statistic, AIDS is the fifth leading cause of death in the US.

People between ages 25 and 44 in the United States are at substantially higher risk compared to other age groups.

Approximately 36.7 million people worldwide living with HIV/AIDS in 2016, including, 2.1 million children less than 15 years of age.

According to epidemiological studies, people who serval sexual partners are the most at risk of HIV infection.

However, the virus can also transmit through infected blood transfusion, infected mother to children.

Most people infected by the HIV virus may experience symptoms of fever, muscle aches and joint pain similar to those of influenza in the early stage of the viral attacks.

According to epidemiological studies, people who have serval sexual partners are the most at risk of HIV infection.

However, the virus can also transmit through infected blood transfusion, infected mother to children.

If untreated, the virus will slowly multiply and destroy the cells of the immune system, leading to chronic signs and symptoms of fever, fatigue, swollen lymph nodes,...

If an infected individual has the numbers of T-cell count below 200, the person is considered to have AIDs.

Ashwagandha also is known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, Middle East, and he Mediterranean.

The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered as anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.

In the urgency to discover a natural ingredient for the prevention of infectious diseases, researchers examined the clinical efficacy and safety of a new polyherbal preparation, Immu-25, in HIV-infected patients.

The open-label pilot study. included 36 patients (10 female, 26 male) with a mean age of 35 +/-10 years, with confirmed HIV infection with a CD4 count <500 cells/microL, received two capsules of the test drug twice daily for 18 months.

According to the results of the study, the polyherbal preparation produced good symptomatic improvement within 6 months with an increase in mean (95% CI) weight from 58 (53-64)kg to 63 (56-69)kg, 64 (58-72)kg and 68 (62-74)kg after 6, 12 and 18 months of treatment, respectively.

The application decreased the incidence and severity of symptoms such as diarrhea, fatigue, anorexia, cough, and fever in the participants.

Furthermore, there was a decrease in the mean (95% CI) viral load from 326 438 (428 600-186 420) copies/mL to 180 495 (258 300-124 000) copies/mL and 22 069 (42 100-16 000) copies/mL after 6 and 12 months of treatment, respectively.

Most importantly, the decrease in viral load was associated with an increase in mean (95% CI) CD4 count from a baseline of 243 (203-388) cells/microL to 336 (263-486) cells/microL after 6 months of therapy, and this continued to rise to 527 (285-767) cells/microL (p < 0.001) and 618 (362-1012) cells/microL (p < 0.001) after 12 and 18 months of treatment, respectively.

However, mild gastrointestinal adverse effects had been reported by some of the participants.

Based on the evidence, researchers said, "herbal drug may have a good immunomodulatory effect and has potential as a co-therapeutic agent in the management of HIV infection. Further studies are warranted to confirm its therapeutic potential".

Taken altogether, Ashwagandha may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of HIV infection, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Dandelion(Taraxacum officinale) Prevents the Risk of Impaired Immune Function, According to Study

By Kyle J. Norton

An immune system is a system of biological structures and processes within an organism that protects against disease by identifying and killing pathogens, including bacteria, viruses, parasites, etc. and tumor cells, including irregular cells growth, cancer cells to keep us healthy.

In most cases, the immune system does a great job of keeping people healthy and preventing infections. But sometimes problems with the immune system can lead to illness and infection.

It is one of the body's defense system against diseases.

Although the immune system has done a great job in protecting us against foreign invasion, unfortunately, during the process of their functions, they may induce the production of free radicals and chain of free radicals that can be harmful to our body.

Immune dysfunction is a chronic condition, depending on the parts of the immune system affected.

There are 2 types of immune dysfunction
* The underactive immune system is also known as the weakened immune system. People with the underactive immune system are susceptible to infection, recurrent infections.

The most common symptoms of the underactive immune system are infection including frequent and recurrent pneumonia, bronchitis, sinus infections, ear infections, meningitis or skin infections and Inflammation and infection of internal organs.

However, blood disorders, such as low platelet counts or anemia and digestive dysfunction are also some of the common symptoms found in patients with the underactive immune system.

* The overactive immune system is also known as autoimmune diseases. In this case, patients suffer diseases associated with the immune system that attacks the body tissues.

An impaired immune system is a condition in which the immune system does not work properly and can't effectively protect a person against infection.

Medical conditions with the use of immune suppression can weaken or impair the immune system.

Dandelion is a herbaceous perennial plant, genus Taraxacum, belongings to the family Asteraceae, native to temperate regions of the world. It has been used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat gout, eczema, acne, gall bladder, kidney, liver and urinary disorders, hypoglycemia, dyspepsia with constipation, edema, blood pressure, and heart weakness, chronic joint, skin diseases, etc.

On finding a natural ingredient for the improvement of the immune system, scientists examined the 6 kinds of Chinese traditional herbs on the restoration of the suppressed immune functions in scald mice.

Polygonum cuspidatum, Taraxacum officinale, and Oidenlandia diffusa (wild) roxb showed immunomodulating effects as measured with 3 immunological parameters.

Furthermore, all tested herbal medicine demonstrated a strong effect on cell-mediated, humoral and non-specific immunity, compared to the depressed immune system in the control non-treated scald mice in various degrees.

More importantly, the immunomodulatory effects are varied according to the dosage of drugs.

Taken altogether, Dandelion may be considered an antioxidant remedy for the improvement of the immune functioning, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Cranberry, the Prebiotic and Anti-Bacterial Functional Food

By Kyle J. Norton

Compared to probiotics, prebiotics are compound in food that induces the growth or activity of beneficial microorganisms in the gut.

In other definition, they are special forms of dietary fiber that act as fertilizers to promote the growth of good bacteria in your gut.

In the gastrointestinal tract, prebiotics can alter the composition of organisms in the gut microbiome.

In other words, prebiotics raises the levels of healthy bacteria against bad bacteria.

Gut microbiota is a complex community with over trillion microorganisms that live in our digestive tracts.

In healthy individuals, the ratio of good and bad microorganisms is balanced. In other words, healthy gut microbiota levels maintain the structure and function of the gastrointestinal tract.

In fact, a balanced ratio of gut microbiota plays a critical role in the digestion of certain foods that the stomach and small intestine have not been able to digest, in the production vitamins, improvement of digestive functioning and modulation of the immune function.

The use of antibiotics has been found to damage the gut ecosystem, leading to certain chronic illnesses such as inflammatory bowel disease, obesity, cancer, and autism.

Further, the unbalanced ratio of gut microbiota functions also alters immune homeostasis, leading to the onset of autoimmune disorders which in turn can induce intestinal and systemic autoimmune diseases.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of digestive diseases researchers investigated the cranberry prebiotic or antimicrobial effect on gut microbiota.

Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belongings to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia. Because of its health benefits, cranberry has been cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.

According to the results of the analysis, cranberry extracts and whole cranberry powder showed a strong activity that broadly modulates the gut microbiota by reducing the abundance of Enterobacteriaceae and increasing the abundance of Bacteroidaceae.

In other words, cranberry extracts and whole cranberry powder improved the ratio of gut microbiota by increasing the population of good bacteria and reducing the numbers of bad bacteria.

In a gut simulator, more precisely, salicylate found in cranberry showed a major contribution to reduce levels of Enterobacteriaceae and elevated Bacteroidaceae in a dose-dependent manner.

Taken altogether, cranberry combined with other herbal medicine may be considered a prebiotic and antimicrobial remedy for the treatment of digestive diseases, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Green Peas (Pisum Sativum) Improves Insulin Sensitivity in Vivo

By Kyle J. Norton

Diabetes is a chronic condition caused by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate the glucose.

In other words, diabetes occurs when cells in the pancreas dying off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol. In some cases, diabetes is also caused by allergic reactions of cells in the immune system.

Insulin sensitivity is a term to measure how sensitive the body's cells are in response to insulin.

In other words, in insulin resistance subject, signals sent out by the hormone insulin was ignored by the cell of the muscles, body fat, and liver that process the function to convert glucose into energy.

Epidemiologically, people with insulin resistance are associated with an increased risk of prediabetes, type 2 diabetes and chronic conditions such as heart attacks, strokes, and cancer.

Insulin resistance is considered a hallmark of type II diabetes and a condition in the cluster of metabolic syndrome.

There is no single cause of insulin resistance. Medical conditions, being extreme overweight, ethnicity, genetic proposition, and physical inactivity are some of the prevalent risks of insulin resistance.

Most cases of insulin resistance in the Western world are involved in the clogged up insulin receptors.
As the signals of hormone insulin are blocked, insulin resistance develops, leading to more production of insulin by the pancreas.

Over time insulin resistance that leads to damage to the beta cell in the pancreas, an early condition of prediabetes and types 2 diabetes.

According to the US statistics, approximately, 60 to 70 million individuals are affected by insulin resistance with 40% of individuals older than 50 years may be at risk for insulin resistance.

Green peas are species of Pisum Sativum belongings to the family Fabaceae and native to western Asia from the Mediterranean Sea to the Himalaya Mountains. The pea is a green, pod-shaped vegetable and a cool-season crop grown in many parts of the world.

On finding a potent ingredient for the treatment of diabetes, researchers investigated the total RNA extracted from livers of rats fed a high-fat diet (HFD) or HFD + pea hulls (PH) diet.

According to the tested analysis,
* PH group showed a significant increase in the intermediaries of β-oxidation: C16-OH and C16:1 acylcarnitines (>50%, p < 0.05) and 3-hydroxybutyrate (100%, p < 0.05), a catabolic process that fatty acid molecules are broken down, compared with the HFD group.

Where increased 3-hydroxybutyrate levels are associated with insulin sensitivity and reduced demand for insulin.

* mRNA of Hadha, a gene involved in β-oxidation, was significantly reduced by 53% (p < 0.005) in the PH group compared with the HFD group,

* Levels of peroxisome-proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPAR-α) associated with lipid metabolism in the liver were no different in both groups.

Based on the results, scientists said, " feeding PH alters lipid metabolism in the liver, which may contribute to improved glucose tolerance in insulin-resistant rats".

Taken altogether, green peas may be considered a functional food for the treatment of insulin resistance,  pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Healthy Food Cabbage Protects the Cells Integrity Against Oxidative Stress

By Kyle J. Norton

Oxidative stress is a condition caused by an imbalance of the ratio of free radicals and antioxidants in the body.

In other words, oxidative stress is either caused by overexpression of free radical or depletion of antioxidant enzymes in the body.

Some researchers suggested that oxidative stress may also arise due to the chain reaction of free radicals in which free radicals donate or intercept an electron from other stable molecules.

Long-term oxidative stress presented in the body can cause protein and lipid damage and alternation of cell DNA, leading to the onset of chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cancer.

More precisely, exogenous factors, such as cigarette smoke, and endogenous factors, such as the oxidative burst from activated macrophages are some of the factors involved in the risk of oxidative stress.

Free radicals are highly reactive molecules with an unpaired electron on the outer ring of the atom.

Due to its nature to become stable, free radicals readily to donate or steal an electron from other molecules, leading to the chain of domino's effect that can not be stopped until either the electrons are paired or inhibited by antioxidants.

This chain of reaction is the cause of oxidative stress, a condition is associated with either overexpression of free radicals or depletion of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host organs.

Antioxidants are stable atom that plays a critical role in protecting the body against the attack of free radicals.

In other words, antioxidants inhibited the onset of free radical before they can cause a chain reaction in facilitating the protein, lipid and cell damage.

Antioxidants can either produced by the liver or intake from dietary sources. Under normal conditions, antioxidant enzymes produced by the body in a healthy individual are good enough to counter the bombardment of free radical attacks.

Cabbage is a species of Brassica oleracea belongings to the family Brassicaceae (or Cruciferae), native to the Mediterranean region along the seacoast. The veggie has a short stem with a crowded mass of leaves, usually green but in some varieties, it may be red or purplish.

On findings a natural wholefood for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, researchers investigated the effects of red cabbage anthocyanin (RCA)-enriched extract on H₂O₂ expression on HepG2 cells.

According to chemical analysis, all derivatives of cyanidin (268 ± 2 μg/mg) found in RCA, mainly with 19% nonacylated, 51% monoacylated, and 31% diacylated structures with ferulic, sinapic, p-coumaric, and caffeic acids exerted antioxidant activity against the oxidative stress induced by the injection of H₂O₂.

Furthermore, the application of RCA extracts markedly ameliorated cell apoptosis and improved viability.

Moreover, in another study, cabbage extract protected against H2O2-induced cell death and did not elicit any cytotoxic effects by suppressing ROS production and increasing the expression of antioxidant proteins (SOD-1, catalase, and GPx) produced by the host.

In oxidative stress-exposed H9c2 cells, the protective effects of cabbage extract also inhibited apoptotic responses and activation of MAPK proteins (ERK1/2, JNK, and p-38) involved in the resistance of apoptosis by preserving mitochondrial functions.

Based on the results, researchers wrote, "cabbage extract protects against oxidative stress and suggests that it can be used as an alternative therapeutic strategy to prevent the oxidative stress in the heart".

Taken altogether, cabbage may be used as a functional food for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Elecampane (Inula helenium) Destroys Lung Cancer Cells in Vitro

By Kyle J. Norton

The lung is a vital organ of the human being, located near the backbone on either side of the heart with functions of inhaling oxygen from the air then transporting them to the bloodstream to nourish the body cells' need and exhaling carbon dioxide from the bloodstream.

Lung cancer is defined as a condition of the abnormal growth of the cells in the lung's tissue. The most common forms of primary lung cancers are derived from epithelial cells.

The most common form of primary lung cancers is derived from epithelial cells.

The exact cause of lung cancer is not identified. However, epidemiologically, smoking, second smoke, exposure to certain chemicals, family history, people who have lung disease and excessive drinking are some prevalent factors associated with lung cancer developing.

According to the statistics provided by the American cancer society, Lung cancer accounts for 14% of all new cancers diagnosed in the US. In 2018, there were about 234,030 new cases of lung cancer (121,680 in men and 112,350 in women). Lung cancer also causes the death of 83,550 in men and 70,500 in women in the same year.

Lung cancer can be classified into 2 major types
* Non-small cell lung cancer is the most common type of lung cancer that usually grows and spreads methodically and predictably.

* Small cell lung cancer is a fast-growing type of lung cancer, that can spread to distant parts of the body in a relatively early stage.

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of lung diseases, scientists examined the anti-lung cancer effects of Alantolactone (ALT), a sesquiterpene lactone compound isolated from Inula helenium.

Elecampane, also known as Horse-heal (Inula helenium) is a perennial composite plant, genus nulla, belonging to Asteraceae, native to Southern Europe, and Asia.

The plant has been used in traditional and herbal medicine in treating bronchitis or emphysema, night sweats, pulmonary tuberculosis, irritating cough, catarrhal discharges, etc.

According to tested analysis,
* ALT inhibited cell growth and induced S‑phase arrest and cell apoptosis in A549 and NCI‑H520 cells.

* ALT increased the level of ROS, inhibited the Akt/glycogen synthase kinase (GSK)3β pathway and induced endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress to prevent proliferation and cause apoptosis of A549 and NCI‑H520 cells.

* Most importantly, ALT treatment sensitized lung cancer cells to Gemcitabine (GEM) by enhancing the chemo drug efficacy.

Based on the results, researchers suggest, "combined treatment with ALT and GEM may have potential as a clinical strategy for lung cancer treatment".

Taken altogether, Dandelion may be considered a remedy for the treatment of lung cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Fermented Soy Improves Brain Blood Flow in Post-Stroke Hyperglycemia in Vivo

By Kyle J. Norton

Stroke is a medical condition in which the brain function is interrupted rapidly due to the loss of blood supply caused by the blockage of blood such as thrombosis and arterial embolism, or leakage of blood that lead to the death of brain cells.

Stroke is a condition associated with the plagues build-up in the arteries and high blood pressure.

In other words, if plagues building up in the arteries is blocking the circulation of blood in any part of the brain, causing oxygen not to be delivered to the brain, resulting in some cells in the brain to die off and are unable reproduce,

Besides cancer and heart diseases, stroke is the third leading cause of death. Approximately 1/4 of all stroke victims die as a direct result of the stroke or its complications.

According to the statistics of the Heart and Stroke Foundation, strokes kill 45% more women than men in Canada.

There are 2 types of stroke
* Ischemic stroke is the most common type of stroke accounting for almost 80% of all strokes.

* Hemorrhagic stroke occurs when a blood vessel bursts inside the brain, causing an increase of the fluid pressure on the brain and harms the brain by pressing it against the skull.

Hyperglycemia, a medical condition of abnormally high blood glucose, is a major concern, in people with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

Most cases of hyperglycemia occurred in patients who do not manage their diabetes properly.

Untreated hyperglycemia has been found to induce ketoacidosis characterized by the symptoms shortness of breath, breath that smells fruity and gastrointestinal discomforts such as nausea, vomiting, and dry mouth.

The post-stroke hyperglycemia management is the interventions associated with the management of physiological variables such as blood glucose, blood pressure, hypoxia, hydration, and temperature

Fermented soy products are diverse varieties of soy food that are made from fermented soybeans, including miso, natto, tempeh, and soy sauce.

On finding a potential plant for the neuroprotection after stroke, researchers examined the effect of chungkookjang made with Sunchang Research Center for Fermentation Microbes 100730 and 100731 strains of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens(SRCM100730; CKJ730) and SRCM100731(CKJ731) on post-stroke hyperglycemia in Mongolian gerbils.

Where the Gerbil which either was fed 4.5% cooked soybeans (CSB), CKJ730, CKJ731, or cellulose (negative-control) in 40 energy% fat diets for 3 weeks, and then had artery occlusion for 8 min and continued taking the assigned diet for 5 weeks.

According to the results of the analysis,
* CKJ730 and CKJ731 had thrombolytic activity and prevented neuronal cell death.

* CKJ730 protected against post-stroke glucose dysregulation by restoring β-cell mass in the gerbils with transient artery occlusion.

* Serum tumor necrosis factor-α and interleukin-1β levels were lower in CKJ730 and CKJ731 than the negative control.

* CSB also improved glucose metabolism and suppressed inflammatory cytokines, but less than CKJ730 and CKJ731.

* Clostridia increased, and Bacteriodia slightly decreased in the negative-control group, compared to the normal control.

Collectively, researchers said, "the daily intake of chungkookjang fermented with B. amyloliquefaciens improved the gut microbiome, increased blood flow to the brain, suppressed systemic inflammation".

Taken altogether, potato may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of post-stroke hyperglycemia-induced complications,, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
