Angelica Sinensis Processes Anti-Apoptotic and Anti-Inflammatory Effects

By Kyle J. Norton

Apoptosis is a process to induce the death of cells formed part of human normal and controlled growth or development.

In other words, in normal cells, apoptosis is an orderly process that occurs during development and aging and as a homeostatic mechanism to maintain cell populations in tissues.

Cancer cells prevent the process of efficiently eliminate dysfunctional cells.

More precisely, defective apoptotic (programmed cell death) genes represent a major causative factor in the development and progression of cancer and enhanced apoptosis may cause degenerative diseases.

Inflammation is the natural response of the immune system macrophages, the first line of defense in stimulating the production of inflammatory cytokines to protect our body against the infection caused by foreign microorganisms during the acute phase of body damage and injury.

Truly, the main focus of inflammation is to repair damage and injury.

Most cases of infection associated with inflammation are stopped at the acute phase. The wound or injury is slowly recovered.

However, overexpression of inflammatory cytokines in most cases can cause improper healing with scar formation or the death of nearby cells.

Any inflammation that lasts more than 3 months is considered chronic inflammation.

Chronic inflammation is the result of the immune system's inability to kill off all the microorganisms participated in the acute phase of infection, leading to the forming of autoimmune and chronic inflammatory diseases such as RA and diabetes.

Longer-term oxidative stress in the body can also cause oxidative damage to biomolecules, including lipids, proteins, DNA damage.

Anti-inflammation is the process that inhibits inflammation or swelling without affecting the immune property to curb foreign pathogens.

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of cancers, scientists examined the Chinese angelica polysaccharide (CAP), the main effective ingredient of angelica sinensis anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptotic effects.

Angelica or Dang Qui is a herb of Genus Angelica from the family Apiaceae, indigenous to China.

The herb has been used as a Queen herb in traditional Chinese medicine antispasmodic and vasodilatory agent, and to balance the hormones in women for a normal menstrual cycle and menstruation and strengthen heart, spleen, kidneys, and liver for both men and women, etc. In other words, it is used to treat gynecological ailments, fatigue, mild anemia, and high blood pressure. It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, etc.

According to the PC12 cells were pretreated by CAP and were subjected to LPS,
* LPS stimulation induced significant cell damage in PC12 cells.

* LPS stimulation also induced cell apoptosis and increased the expression of pro-inflammatory proteins such as IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, and TNF-α.

* CAP pretreatment not only protected PC12 cells against LPS-induced cell damage but also reduced the expression of COX-1 even in LPS-stimulated PC12 cells.

* Interestingly, COX-1 overexpression abolished the protective effects of CAP on LPS-injured PC12 cells.

* Moreover, CAP activated PI3K/AKT pathway associated with the regulation of cell cycle in a COX-1-dependent manner.

Based on the results, researchers suggest, "CAP exerted anti-apoptotic and anti-inflammatory effects on LPS-injured PC12 cells via down-regulation of COX-1".

Taken altogether, Dandelion may be considered an antioxidant remedy which processes anti-apoptotic and anti-inflammatory effects, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Elder (Sambucus) Promotes Neuronal Survival and Neuritogenesis in Neurological Diseases

By Kyle J. Norton

A neuron or nerve cell made of a cell body (also called soma), dendrites and an axon, is a cell in the nervous system that carries electrical impulses.

Neurons are core components of the brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves that play an essential role in the process and transmit information.

Neurodegenerative diseases are a class of conditions associated with the progressive loss of neurons in the brain caused by several mechanisms, including toxicity and oxygen deficiency.

Most common disease associated with neurodegenerative diseases is dementia, a cluster of conditions included Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and Huntington’s disease, leading to a negative influence the body's functioning, including balance, movement, talking, breathing, and heart function.

There is no single cause of the progressive death of brain neurons. Epidemiologically, genetic preposition, medical conditions, such as alcoholism, brain cancer or a stroke in the brain are some of the most common prevalent factors found in patients with neurological diseases.

Other risk factors associated with the disease prevalence are the increase in age, the most consistent risk factor for developing a neurodegenerative disease, especially AD or PD, as the disease has been found over 60% in the population aged 65 and beyond compared to another group.

Neuritogenesis, the process of new neurites were formed that develop into axons and dendrites, plays a critical role to influence neural functions and reduce the risk of neurodegenerative diseases.

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of neurological diseases, scientists examined the effects of peptides mimicking α2,6-sialyllactose (6'-SL) on neural functions.

A prolonged period of toxins, toxic chemicals accumulated that affects the brain function also have a strong impact to induce the onset of the disease.

The progressive loss of neurons induced neurological and neuropsychological signs and symptoms have also been found in comparison to the stage of disease onset of patients.

Elder or Common Elder, is a shrub or small tree of the genus Sambucus of 30 species, belonging to the family Adoxaceae, native to the temperate-to-subtropical regions of both the Northern Hemisphere and the Southern Hemisphere.

The herb has been used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat constipation, colic, diarrhea, colds, flu, bronchial and upper-respiratory, irritation of the skin, rheumatism, etc.

According to tested analysis,
* The mimetic peptide frequently inhibited the lectin binding to 6'-SL.
* The mimetic peptide, increased viability, and expression of neural cell adhesion molecule L1 in SK-N-SH human neuroblastoma cells.

* Additionally, the mimetic peptide also promoted survival and neurite outgrowth of cultured mouse cerebellar granule neurons challenged by H2O2-induced oxidative stress.

These results strongly suggested that 6'-SL mimetic peptide promotes neuronal survival and neuritogenesis.

Based on the results, researchers suggest, "(These results indicated) raising hopes for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. This study was approved by the Medical Ethics Committee of Shantou University Medical College, China (approval No. SUMC 2014-004) on February 20, 2014".

Taken altogether, Elder lectin, which specifically binds to 6'-SL may be considered a remedy for the treatment of neurological diseases, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.Natural Medicine for Fatty Liver And Obesity Reversal - The Revolutionary Findings To Achieve Optimal Health And Lose Weight

Beta-Sitosterol Improves The Liver and Kidney Functioning in Hypertensive Rats in Vivo

By Kyle J. Norton

Blood pressure is the force of the blood pushing against the arterial walls. In high blood pressure, the heart has to work harder than normal to pump blood through the circulation system. Over time, high blood pressure has been found to cause damage to the heart and arteries.

Hypertension or high blood pressure is a condition characterized by persistently or abnormally high blood pressure that leads to raising the pressure in your heart.

It also is a member of the cluster of metabolic syndrome associated with the risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

High blood pressure is a slowly developed condition. Unless the syndrome has caused damage to the blood vessel, otherwise symptoms cannot be detected.

If the pressure stays high over time it can cause hardening and stiffening arterial wall,, a major risk factor of heart diseases.

The ideal blood pressure is more than 120 over 80 and less than 140 over 90 (120/80-140/90), according to the consensus.

In the US approximately, one-third of the adults have high blood pressure, affecting over 77 million people in the country.

Additionally, among adults age 20 and older in the United States, in the non-Hispanic whites community, 33.4 percent of men and 30.7 percent of women are infected by the syndrome.

High blood pressure can be acute or chronic. Acute high blood pressure most often occurs to people with sudden stress or intense physical exercise. As the heart must pump harder to provide the needs of nutrients and oxygen.

Most cases of chronic high blood pressure are associated with an unhealthy lifestyle and chronic diseases such as kidney disease, leading to the onset of strokes and cardiovascular disease.

If you can control your diet, such as making changes to lifestyle, maintaining ideal weight and diet with low salt, you could do just fine without the drugs.

Beta-Sitosterol is a phytochemical in the class of Phytosterols, belongings to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in avocados, rice bran, wheat germ, corn oils, fennel, peanuts, soybeans, hawthorn, basil, buckwheat. etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the prevention and treatment of metabolic syndrome, researchers compared the effects of β-sitosterol (BSS) and lisinopril, antihypertension in rats.

According to the tested analysis of rat groups induced hypertension by cadmium chloride treated by BSS and lisinopril,
* BSS showed a significant decrease (p<0.05) in the serum creatinine concentration, compared to hypertensive rats.

* Lisinopril treatment showed a significant increase (p<0.05) in the activity of oxidative stress markers AST and ALP, compared to normal rats.

* Treatment of with BSS and lisinopril showed slight variations in the concentration of serum electrolytes compared with normal and hypertensive rats.

* BSS significantly reduced calcium levels compared with the hypertensive group in the activation of oxidative stress.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "The study shows that BSS is effective in restoring basal liver and kidney functions in hypertensive rats.

Taken altogether, beta-Sitosterol may be considered a supplement for the protection of liver and kidney functioning, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of beta-Sitosterol in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Tocopherols Reduce the Risk and Progression of Prostate Cancer in Vivo

By Kyle J. Norton

Prostate gland wrapped around the around a tube (the urethra), is a gland of the male reproductive system found in front of the rectum and just below the bladder.

The prostate gland is a gland that makes and stores semen. It is located below the bladder and surrounds the tube that carries urine out of your body.

Additionally, the muscles of the prostate gland also play a critical role in propelling seminal fluid into the urethra during ejaculation

Symptoms of an enlarged prostate are associated with a naturally impend the conversion of testosterone to DHT. Unfortunately, aging is not the only cause of enlarged prostate.

Prostate cancer is a medical and chronic condition caused the growth of the cells irregularly in the tissue of the prostate.

Most cases of prostate cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the prostate gland.
According to the statistic provided by the Canadian Cancer Society, prostate cancer is the third most common cancer among Canadian men and the 3rd leading cause of death from cancer in men in Canada.

In 2017, approximately 21,300 men were diagnosed with prostate cancer, accounting for 21% of all new cancer cases in men.

Furthermore, approximately 1 in 7 Canadian men will develop prostate cancer during his lifetime and 1 in 29 will die from it.

The 5-year survival rate for most men with local or regional prostate cancer is nearly 100%.

In other words, For men diagnosed with prostate cancer that has not spread to other parts of the body, the 5-year survival rate is 100%.

However, the 5 years survival rate of prostate cancer that has spread to other parts of the body, is only 30%.

Tocopherols are phytochemicals of which many have vitamin E activity, belonging to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in butter, egg yolk, milk fat, some vegetable, and seed or nut oils, etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of chronic diseases, researchers examined the effect of tocopherols on prostate cancer.

The study included specific Pten-/- (Ptenp-/-) mice induced cancer by activation of AKT cancer promotion signaling, fed by Ptenp-/- mice with AIN93M or 0.2% δ-T supplemented diet, at the age of 6 or 12 weeks.
According to the analysis,
* δ-T treatment reduced prostate adenocarcinoma multiplicity at the age of 40 weeks by 53.3 and 42.7%, respectively.

* Furthermore, the phosphorylation of AKT (T308) that promotes cancer growth and survival was reduced in the prostate of the mice administered the δ-T diet.

* δ-T diet also, reduced proliferation and increased apoptosis were in the prostate cancer cell line without affecting the oxidative stress.

Interestingly, α-tocopherol (α-T) at 0.2% in the diet exhibited anti-prostate cancer cell activity with no effects on prostate adenocarcinoma multiplicity in the Ptenp-/- mice.

After talking about other factors into account, researchers said, " δ-T inhibits the development of prostate adenocarcinoma in Ptenp-/- mice, mainly through inhibition of AKT activation".

Taken altogether, tocopherols may be considered an adjunct therapy in the treatment of prostate cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of tocopherols in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Healthy Food Cabbage Protects the Liver Against Injury

By Kyle J. Norton

The liver is the largest internal organ in the human body, played an essential role in filtering blood from the intestine before passing them to other parts of the body.

The organ also produced cholesterol, a waxy substance that is needed to aid digestion and build strong cell membranes, production of steroid hormones and vitamins.

Liver injury may be a result caused by physical impact or penetrating trauma. In some cases, liver injury can also be induced by toxicity, leading to acute liver injury.

Liver injury can be mild or severe. In a mild case, liver injury can recover itself. However, in severe cases. surgery to stop the bleeding and remove the part of injury may be necessary.

According to the statistics, liver injury has been found to constitute 5% of all traumas, making it the most common abdominal injury.

Other most common symptoms associated with liver injury are shocks due to severe bleeding inducing a rapid heart rate, rapid breathing, and cold, clammy, pale or bluish skin.

In some cases, blood accumulated in the abdomen may irritate the abdominal tissue, leading to symptoms of abdominal pain and swollen and tenderness.

The severity of a liver injury can be diagnosed by computed tomography (CT) or ultrasonography.

Depending on the size of the wound, most cases of liver injury are healed by itself. However, in severe cases, hospitalization may be necessary if the bleeding does not stop.

The most common cause of liver injury is an overdose of medicine which has been found to be the number 1 factor.

Cabbage is a species of Brassica oleracea belongings to the family Brassicaceae (or Cruciferae), native to the Mediterranean region along the seacoast. The veggie has a short stem with a crowded mass of leaves, usually green but in some varieties, it may be red or purplish.

On findings a natural wholefood for the improvement of liver diseases, researchers examined the hepatoprotective properties of the essential oil (EO) from white cabbage.

On acute carbon tetrachloride (CT)-induced liver damage,
* Bocfal EO contained organic polysulphides (OPSs), such as dimethyl trisulphide (DMTS) 65.43 ± 4.92% and dimethyl disulphide (DMDS) 19.29 ± 2.16% as major constituents.

* Bocfal EO and DMTS were found to be potent TBARS, a byproduct of lipid peroxidation inhibitors with IC50 values of 0.51 and 3 mg/L, respectively.

* Bocfal EO demonstrated better hepatoprotective properties than did DADS (p < 0.05), although both slightly affected the hepatic parenchyma per se.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "The antioxidant properties of Bocfal EO and DMTS may be the mechanism of hepatoprotective action; the parenchymal disturbances by Bocfal EO or DADS alone may be related to the high doses used".

Taken altogether, cabbage process anti liver injury, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Healthy Veggie Broccoli Processes Anti-Hypercholesterolemic Property

By Kyle J. Norton

The liver is the largest internal organ found in the human which plays an essential role in filtering the blood from the digestive system before passing them to other parts of the body.

The liver also produces cholesterol, a waxy substance which aids digestion, builds cell membranes and produces vitamin D and steroid hormones.

Hypercholesterolemia is a condition characterized by abnormally high levels of cholesterol in the bloodstream.

In other words, the condition is caused by either overexpression of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) or low levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL).

Cholesterol, a waxy substance produced by the liver or the dietary in moderate amount source plays a critical to aid digestive function in absorbing nutrients, build strong cell membranes, produce steroid hormones and vitamin D. However, excessive amounts in the blood have been found to induce plaque built-up on the arterial wall, leading to heart disease and stroke.

Similar to high blood pressure, people with hypercholesterolemia are asymptomatic. Patients with familial hyper cholesterol may experience symptoms of chest pain with activity. xanthomas, and cholesterol deposits around the eyelids.

The most common complications associated with uncontrolled hypercholesterolemia are carotid artery disease, coronary heart disease, including angina or heart attack, peripheral artery disease, and stroke.

The most common complications associated with uncontrolled hypercholesterolemia are carotid artery disease, coronary heart disease, including angina or heart attack, peripheral artery disease, and stroke.

According to the statistics provided by the CDC, hypercholesterolemia is a major risk factor of heart disease, a leading cause of death in the US. In the US, approximately, 71 million American adults (33.5%) have high low-density lipoprotein (LDL), or “bad,” cholesterol, and only 1 out of every 3 adults with high LDL cholesterol has the condition under control.

Sadly, only 50% of people hypercholesterolemia are getting treatment.

Out of many risk factors associated with the risk of hypercholesterolemia, some researchers suggested that widespread obesity due to aging may have a strong impact on the increased incidence in the US.

Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belongings to the family Brassicaceae. The vegetable has large flower heads, usually green in color and the mass of flower heads is surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant on the continent of Europe.

On finding a potential plant that processes anti-high blood cholesterol, researchers examined a diet rich in high glucoraphanin (HG) broccoli that reduces plasma LDL-C.

130 volunteers recruited to two independent double-blind, randomly allocated parallel dietary intervention studies, were assigned to consume either 400 g standard broccoli or 400 g HG broccoli per week for 12 weeks.

According to the plasma lipids before and after the intervention,
* In one study, The HG broccoli diet reduced plasma LDL-C by 7.1% (95% CI: –1.8%, –12.3%, p = 0.011), whereas standard broccoli reduced LDL-C by 1.8% (95% CI +3.9%, –7.5%, ns). In study 2 (93 volunteers)

*  In another study, the HG broccoli diet resulted in a reduction of 5.1% (95% CI: –2.1%, –8.1%, p = 0.001), whereas standard broccoli reduced LDL-C by 2.5% (95% CI: +0.8%, –5.7%, ns).

* When data from the two studies were combined the reduction in LDL-C by the HG broccoli was significantly greater than standard broccoli (p = 0.031).

Collectively, researchers said, "Evidence from two independent human studies indicates that consumption of high glucoraphanin broccoli significantly reduces plasma LDL-C".

Taken altogether, broccoli may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of hypercholesterolemia, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Angelica Inhibits the Onset of Male Infertility

By Kyle J. Norton

Infertility is a condition of the inability of a couple to conceive after 12 months of unprotected sexual intercourse.

The condition affects over 5 million couples alone in the U. S. and many times more in the world. Because of unawareness of treatments, only 10% seek help from a professional specialist.

Infertility is very common in the US, approximately 10% of women or 6.1 million, ages 15-44 have difficulty getting pregnant or staying pregnant, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Male infertility refers to a male's inability to cause pregnancy in a fertile female, accounting for  40–50% of infertility.

The condition affects approximately 7% of all men.

The most common causes of male infertility are deficiencies in the semen, and semen quality.

In men, age, pesticide and chemical exposure, drug use, radiation, pollution, cigarette or marijuana smoke, heavy alcohol consumption may be some risk factors for the onset of infertility.

In fact, some unfertilized women and men sometimes ago are fertile. However, here are some reasons that have found to increase the risk of infertility in the Western world, including
* Persuade a personal career, before having children.

*Try to be financial stability before having children.

* Too young to be a parent, raising a child needs efforts, time and money.

* Enjoy the couple childless years before committing.

Some researchers suggested that the widespread obesity in North America may be the major factor correlated to the increased infertile rate over the past few decades.

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of infertility, scientists examined the effects of decursin extracted from Angelica Gigas Nakai on antioxidant activity in vitro and in a cryptorchidism-induced infertility rat model.

According to the results of the differentiation of rats treated either by distilled water or AG 400 mg/kg of A. gigas extract after 1, 2, and 4 weeks, treatment group with A. gigas extract
* Protected TM3 cells against oxidative stress in a dose-dependent manner,

* Improved the mean weight of the cryptorchid testis,

* Maintained sperm counts, motility, and spermatogenic cell density,

* Decreased levels of 8-hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) and increased levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD),

* Significantly increased Nrf2 and heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), and

* Significantly decreased apoptosis.

These results suggested, "decursin extracted from A. gigas is a supplemental agent that can reduce oxidative stress by Nrf2-mediated upregulation of HO-1 in rat experimentally induced unilateral cryptorchidism and may improve cryptorchidism-induced infertility".

Taken altogether, herbal angelica may be considered an antioxidant remedy for the treatment of oxidative induction of male infertility, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
