Healthy Food Onion Improves the Endothelial Functioning

By Kyle J. Norton

The endothelium is a layer of membrane that lines the inside of the heart and blood vessels.
Endothelial cells found in the endothelium processes a function to control vascular relaxation and contraction and enzymes involved in blood clotting, immune function, and platelet. adhesion.

In other words, under normal conditions, the cells of endothelium protect the heart muscles and the blood vessels against the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Endothelial dysfunction is a common and early event in cardiovascular disease (CVD) caused by reduced function of endothelium due to damage occurred in the vascular endothelium.

Endothelial dysfunction caused by cardiovascular disease involves different mechanisms, depending on specific risk factors. Particularly, a reduction in nitric oxide (NO) bioavailability that interferes with the diverse physiological actions, including vasodilation, anti-inflammation, antiplatelet, antiproliferation and antimigration are some of the major causes of endothelial dysfunction.

Epidemiologically, hypercholesterolemia,  hyperglycemia, hypertension, smoking, inflammation, and aging are some of the prevalent factors found in patients with endothelial dysfunction.

Dr. Hirata Y and colleagues in examining the treatment of endothelial dysfunction conventionally wrote, Vascular endothelial dysfunction reflected by reduced nitric oxide (NO) availability is certainly the causative factor or promoting the mechanism of arteriosclerosis"

And, " There are nonpharmacological and pharmacological therapies to attain endothelial repair. The former includes bodyweight reduction, aerobic exercise, and restriction of salt intake, while the latter includes the use of renin-angiotensin system inhibitors, calcium antagonists, some types of beta-blockers, statins, erythropoietin, tetrahydrobiopterin, and antioxidants. These therapies are intended to increase NO synthase activity and NO release, inhibit NO degradation, and enhance the activity of endothelial progenitor cells".

The onion is a plant in the genus Allium, belongings to the family Alliaceae, a close relation of garlic. It is often called the "king of vegetables" because of its pungent taste and found in a large number of recipes and preparations spanning almost the totality of the world's cultures.

Depending on the variety, an onion can be sharp, spicy, tangy, pungent, mild or sweet.

On finding a potent ingredient that processes cardioprotection researchers examined the effects of onion peel extract (OPE) on endothelial function in healthy overweight and obese individuals.

The randomized double-blind, placebo-controlled study included a total of 72 healthy overweight and obese participants randomly assigned to receive a red, soft capsule of OPE (100 mg quercetin/d, 50 mg quercetin twice daily; n = 36 participants) or an identical placebo capsule (n = 36) for 12 wk.

According to the tested assays, the OPE treated group showed significant improvement of flow-mediated dilation (FMD) associated with the dilation of an artery that increases blood flow at 12 wk, compared to no difference in the placebo group.

The circulating endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) counts and percentage of EPCs associated with the promotion of repaired vascular damage were significantly increased in the OPE group.

More precisely, OPE decreased the patients with endothelial dysfunction from 26% to 9%.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "Medium-term administration of OPE an improvement in FMD and circulating EPCs (in patients with the endothelial dysfunction)".

Taken altogether, onion may be considered a remedy for the promotion of endothelial function, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Lycopene Processes a Strong Hepatoprotective Effect

By Kyle J. Norton

The liver is the largest internal organ and the first line of the bodily toxin defense by filtering the blood from the digestive tract, before passing them to the rest of the body.

The liver also produces cholesterol that plays a critical role in building a strong cell wall, producing steroid hormones and vitamin D and aiding the digestive function in food absorption and detoxifying chemicals and metabolizes drugs.

The hepatoprotective or liver protective effect is a process that maintains the healthy function of the liver against harmful toxins.

Toxic hepatitis that links to exposure to alcohol, chemicals, drugs or nutritional supplements that cause inflammation of the liver may be the most common liver toxicity in the US.

In the US, most cases of liver disease are a result of hepatitis viral infection and autoimmune diseases. Infectious viral hepatitis can produce toxins to protect them against the antioxidant enzymes produced by the host body and prevent the attack of the systematic immune response.

Symptoms of liver diseases include jaundice, abdominal pain, and swelling, swelling in the legs and ankles, itchy skin, dark urine, and pale stool color, and tendency to bruise easily.

According to the statistic from the Canadian liver foundation, approximately, one in ten Canadians, or more than three million people, have some form of liver disease.

Believe it or not, chronic hepatitis B and C, alcoholic liver disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and liver cancer account for the 95% of deaths in patients with liver disease.

Lycopene is a phytochemical in the class of carotenoid, a natural pigment with no vitamin A activity found abundantly in tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables, such as red carrots, watermelons, and papayas,

Tomatoes provide about 80% of the lycopene in the world diet. In plants, lycopene protects the host against excessive photodamage and perform various functions in photosynthesis.

On finding a potential compound for the prevention of liver injury, researchers examined the liver-protective effects of lycopene.

The study included BALB/c male mice divided into three equal groups: control, Concanavalin A (Con A), and Con A and lycopene with the control group mice received the only vehicle by intraperitoneal injection, the Con A group mice were given Con A, and group mice received Con A and lycopene.

Mice group treated by Con A showed a significant liver damaged observed by elevated levels of oxidative stress markers such as Con A administration increased histopathological damage, and the levels of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT).

Furthermore, Con A also stimulated the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin (IL)-6, and immune response pro-inflammatory cytokine such as interferon (IFN)-γ and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α.

According to the analysis of the effect of lycopene on the Con A and lycopene group, all parameter associated with liver damage induced by Con A was significantly reduced by the administration of lycopene.

More importantly, lycopene not only inhibited the negative effect of Con A on the liver injury but also promoted the liver cell viability and cell growth.

In other words, lycopene processed anti-liver toxicity activity.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "The results of this study revealed that lycopene might be a useful hepatoprotective agent for reducing increased proinflammatory cytokine levels, and for increasing cell viability and cell growth".

Taken altogether, lycopene found in tomato may be considered supplements for the promotion of liver protection, pending on the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of lycopene in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Turmeric Induces the Virally Infected Cancer Cells Death in Viro

By Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is a class of chronic diseases caused by irregular cell growth that starts in the tissue of specific organs.

Most cases of cancer start in the cell on the surface of the inner lining of specific tissue due to the alternation of cell  DNA. Overtime after colonizing the entire organ, the oversize tumor can sometimes spread to other organs in the body via lymph or blood, leading to secondary metastasis.

Viruses are made up of a piece of genetic material, such as DNA or RNA enclosed in a coat of protein. Virtual infection is a result of a viral invasion that use components of invaded cells to multiply, leading to the damages or alternation of the DNA or RNA of the host cells.

Most common types of virally infected cancer are
* Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) that spreads through saliva has been found to increase the risk of Burkitt lymphoma, some types of Hodgkin’s and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and stomach cancer.

* Hepatitis B virus (HBV) that spreads through infected blood, semen and other body fluids are found to induce cause of liver cancer.

* Hepatitis C virus (HCV) that spreads through infected blood has been found to cause liver cancer and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

* Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) that spreads through infected semen, vaginal fluids, blood, and breast milk is associated with Kaposi sarcoma, non-Hodgkin’s and Hodgkin’s lymphoma, and cervical cancer.

* Human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8) has been a leading cause of Kaposi sarcoma in people who have a weakened immune system.

* Human papillomavirus (HPV) is known to cause cancer in men and women, including anal, cervical, penile, throat, vaginal and vulvar cancer.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

On finding a potential ingredient for the treatment of infected cancer, researchers examined the effect of curcumin on human T-cell leukemia virus type I (HTLV-I)-infected T-cell lines.

According to the tested assays, curcumin promoted cell cycle arrest by reducing the expression of cyclin D1 in the promotion of cancer, Cdk1 in cancer cell proliferation, and Cdc25C in cell DNA damage and apoptosis by reducing the expression of XIAP in poor prognosis marker and survivin in cancer cells survival.

Furthermore, the constitutive active NF-kappaB associated with cancer initiation, development, metastasis, and resistance in HTLV-I-infected T-cell lines was also suppressed by the administration of curcumin.

Moreover, curcumin-induced suppression of cHTLV-I-infected T-cell growth did not correlate with Tax expression level involved in antiapoptotic signals.

Based on the findings, Dr.Tomita M, the lead scientist wrote, "Curcumin inhibited the growth of HTLV-I-infected T-cell tumors implanted subcutaneously in SCID mice".

Taken altogether, turmeric processed abundantly bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of virally infected cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Betaxanthins the Anti Dyslipidemia-Related Diseases Functional Phytochemical

By Kyle J. Norton

Fat including cholesterol and triglycerides consists of hydrocarbon molecules.

Hyperlipidemia is a medical condition characterized by abnormally high levels of cholesterol in the bloodstream.

Overexpression of cholesterol levels in the bloodstream has been linked to plaques accumulation on the arterial walls, a major cause of some forms of heart disease and stroke.

Untreated high blood cholesterol has been found to induce serious complications including carotid artery disease, coronary heart disease, peripheral artery disease, and stroke.

Dr, Yagi K, at the Institute of Applied Biochemistry in the analysis of the lipid peroxides and human diseases, said, "The lipid peroxidation (LPO) products are highly reactive and display marked biological effects, which, depending upon their concentration, cause selective alterations in cell signaling, protein and DNA damage, and cytotoxicity"

And. "Increased formation of lipid peroxides and aldehydes has been observed in atherosclerosis, ischemia-reperfusion, heart failure, Alzheimer’s disease, rheumatic arthritis, cancer, and other immunological disorders".

Cholesterol is the type of fat produced by the liver or from fat intake playing a critical role in the building of strong cell walls, production of vitamin D and steroid hormones and bile acid to aid digestion in the small intestine.

Cholesterol produced by the liver in a healthy individual is returned to the liver by high-density lipoprotein (HDL).

The healthy ratio of HDL/LDL cholesterol is any numbers that are less than 1/4.

On the other hand, triglyceride is fat in the blood that comes from the outside source used by the body to convert to energy.

Triglyceride is stored in the fat cells used to produced energy between meals and in the case when food is scarce.

Compared to cholesterol, triglycerides in high levels also associated with the risk of heart disease, particularly in people with high levels of LDL and low levels of HDL.

Evolutionally, fat accumulation is considered a defense mechanism in the human body where excess fat is stored when food is plentiful and release to produce energy when food is scarce.

This defense mechanism has become deadly in Western countries where goods are always plentiful, leading to overweight and obesity in the induction of the onset of various types of chronic disease.

Betaxanthins are Phytochemicals in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments, belonging to the group of Betalains, found abundantly in beets, Sicilian prickly pear, etc.

On finding a potent ingredient for the treatment of heart diseases, researchers investigated the effects of betaxanthin on dyslipidemia-related diseases.

Application of betalains, consisting of betacyanins and betaxanthins is not only non-toxic but could also prove to be a promising alternative to supplement therapies in oxidative stress-, inflammation-, associated with the risk of dyslipidemia-related diseases.

Furthermore, betalains are safe, easy accessibility, low price, biodegradability, and potentially advantageous biological effects on health and can be used in food manufacturing and related industries that could pave the way to overcome current concerns over the health risks of artificial colors.

Taken altogether, betaxanthins found abundantly in betalains may be used for the prevention and treatment of dyslipidemia-related diseases,  pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Cranberry May Improve Cognitive Remembering

By Kyle J. Norton

Neuroprotection is a process to preserve the neuronal structure and/or function against the death or gradual death of neurons, including the use of medicines and herbs.

In other words, neuroprotection protects the neuronal integrity against the reduction in the rate of neuronal loss over time inducing neurological disease, including neurodegenerative disease.

Neurodegenerative disease is the class of condition associated with the progressive loss of neuron occurred mostly in older adults, including dementia. The most common dementia in the US is Alzheimer`s disease (AD).

Alzheimer's disease is an irreversible, progressive brain disorder caused by the slowly lost of neuron in the brain that affects the memory and thinking skills and, eventually, the ability to carry out the simplest tasks as the disease progress into advanced stage.

According to the statistic, dementia affects over 47.5 million people worldwide, approximately 58 percent are living within low and middle-income countries.

Believe it or not, 5.8 million Americans of all ages are living with Alzheimer's dementia in 2019 and two-thirds of people with Alzheimer's disease are women.

Conventionally, as of today, there is no cure for dementia. Treatment of dementia is focusing to improve dementia symptoms and slow down the progression of the disease.

Some researchers suggested that the increased incidence of the onset of Alzheimer's disease over the past few decades may be correlated to the promotion of a high-fat diet in the US.

Dr. Rollins CPE, the lead scientist wrote, "HFD-induced obesity during adolescence exacerbated brain volume alterations by adult life in the 3xTg mouse model in comparison to control-fed mice and mediated volumetric alterations of select brain regions, such as the hippocampus".

And, "Further, HFD-induced obesity aggravated memory in all mice, lowering certain memory measures of B6129s control mice to the level of 3xTg mice maintained on a CD. Moreover, a decline in the volumetric trajectories of hippocampal regions for all mice was associated with the degree of spatial memory impairments on the MWM.".

Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belongings to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia.

Because of its health benefits, cranberry has been cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of the neurological disorder, researchers examined the efficacy of cranberry juice on the neuropsychologic functioning cognitively in older adults.

The 6-week, double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized, parallel-group, clinical trial included 50 community-dwelling, cognitively intact volunteers, > or = 60 years old, with no history of dementia or significant neurocognitive impairments, randomly assigned to receive either 32 ounces/day of a beverage containing 27% cranberry juice per volume (n = 25) or placebo (n = 25).

According to the tested analysis at the end of 6 weeks experiment, there are no significant interactions between the cranberry and placebo groups comapred to the baseline in standardized neuropsychologic assessments.

However, the subjective, self-report questionnaire where twice as many participants in the cranberry group showed a significant improvement of overall remembers abilities compared to placebo controls.

More precisely, 37.5% in the cranberry group rated their overall abilities to remember by treatment end as "improved" as compared to only 17.4% in the placebo controls.

Taken altogether, cranberry may be considered a remedy for the improvement of cognitive functioning, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Indicaxanthin Processes a Significant Prooxidant Activity

By Kyle J. Norton

Prooxidants are endobiotics or xenobiotics associated with the induction of oxidative stress either by generating free radicals (ROS) or inhibiting antioxidant systems.

Reactive oxygen species and reactive nitrogen. Without being controlled by antioxidants, ROS can induce a domino's effect by stealing an electron from other molecules, leading to a continued reaction that cannot stop until all single electrons are paired or inhibited by the presence of antioxidant molecules.

Free radicals are unstable molecules with unpaired electrons in the outermost ring produced daily internally including cell metabolism and externally including the air we breathe and the food we eat.

Antioxidants are stable atoms produced either by the host body or intake of dietary antioxdant rich food.

In this cascade, free radicals overexpression induces oxidative stress. A major cause of protein, lipid and cell damage increase risk of the early onset of many chronic diseases.

In other words, oxidative stress is an imbalanced ratio of free radicals and antioxidants. the condition has been found to cause damage of protein, and lipid damage and alternation of DNA.

Most common diseases or syndromes associated with the onset of oxidative stress are aging, cardiovascular diseases (CVD), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), chronic kidney disease, neurodegenerative diseases, and cancer caused by irregular cell growth due to the alternation of cell DNA.

In a healthy individual, the production of antioxidant enzymes by the body is more than enough to counter the negative effect of free radical produced by the cell metabolism to produce energy and external sources such as environment pollution and the food we eat.

There are many risk factors that can increase the overexpression of free radicals, including fried foods, alcohol, tobacco smoke, pesticides, air pollutants.

Dr. Dergham M, in the examination of prooxidant and proinflammatory potency of air pollution, wrote, "Organic chemicals adsorbed on the three PM₂.₅₋₀.₃ samples (i.e., polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) were able to induce the gene expression of xenobiotic-metabolizing enzymes (i.e., Cytochrome P4501A1 and 1B1, and, to a lesser extent, NADPH-quinone oxidoreductase-1)".

And, "Moreover, intracellular reactive oxygen species within BEAS-2B cells exposed to the three PM₂.₅₋₀.₃ samples induced oxidative damage (i.e., 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine formation, malondialdehyde production and/or glutathione status alteration)".

Indicaxanthin is phytochemicals in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments of Betacyanins, belongings to the group of Betalains found abundantly in beets, chard, etc.

On finding a potential compound that processes anti-inflammatory activity researchers examined the indicaxanthin pro-oxidant activity.

In lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW 264.7 macrophages, indicaxanthin promotes the synthesis of anti-inflammatory prostaglandins by modulating the arachidonate (AA) metabolism associated with inflammation.

The anti-inflammatory activity of indicaxanthin was attributed by modulating the redox status of LPS-stimulated macrophages in the induction of inflammatory response by preventing activation of production of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2).

Furthermore, the concentration between 50 and 100 µM is most effective. However, indicaxanthin did not have any effect in the absence of LPS.

Taken altogether, indicaxanthin may be considered a prooxidant as an anti-inflammatory remedy, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Angelica Inhibits the Acute Coronary Syndrome in Patient with Renal Deficiency

By Kyle J. Norton

The acute coronary syndrome is a medical emergency associated with a range of conditions caused by sudden, reduced blood flow to the heart, leading to heart muscle damage and brain apoptosis depending on the affected location.

The acute coronary syndrome is associated with the severity of buildup of plaque deposits in and on the walls of the coronary arteries.

Plaque is made up of fat, cholesterol, calcium, and other substances found in the blood.

Arteries formed a part of blood vessels and circulatory system with function to deliver oxygen and nutrients to heart muscles.

Depending on the severity of the blockage, a complete blockage is life-threatening. Symptoms of acute coronary syndrome, chest pain or discomfort, pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the jaw, neck, back or stomach, shortness of breath, dizziness, and nausea.

If the chest pain is persistent with no sign of stopping, please call 911 immediately.

The most common treatment of acute coronary syndrome is medicine to reopen the artery. However, in severe cases, angioplasty (a inflate a small balloon) may be necessary.

Traditionally, over many decades, patients with acute coronary syndrome are likely to be treated by oxygen therapy.

Dr. Pankaj Garg in the examing the effects of oxygen therapy on patients with acute coronary syndrome wrote, " However, more recently, there have been many reports of harmful effects of high-flow oxygen in ACS patients where the patient might not be hypoxic".

Anf "High flow oxygen has been shown previously to reduce cardiac output,2 attributes to arterial vasoconstriction35 and also to increase systemic vascular resistance.6 More recently, two systematic reviews suggest that the routine use of high-flow oxygen in uncomplicated myocardial infarction may result in greater infarct size and possibly increase the risk of mortality".

Angelica or Dang Qui is a herb of Genus Angelica from the family Apiaceae, indigenous to China. The herb has been used as a Queen herb in traditional Chinese medicine antispasmodic and vasodilatory agent, and to balance the hormones in women for a normal menstrual cycle and menstruation and strengthen heart, spleen, kidneys, and liver for both men and women, etc. In other words, it is used to treat gynecological ailments, fatigue, mild anemia, and high blood pressure. It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, etc.

On finding a potential compound that inhibits acute coronary syndrome, researchers examined the neuroprotective effects of Chinese herbal medicines in the cardiovascular outcome among patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and renal insufficiency after the percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).

The study included population consisted of 215 subjects in the control group who were treated with western medicine standard therapy, and 211 subjects in the treatment group who were treated with Chinese herbal medicines (Fufang Chuanxiong Capsule and Xinyue Capsule) for 6 months.

Participants are from the 5C trial with post-PCI patients suffered from ACS with mild-to-moderate renal insufficiency (30 mL•min-1•1.73 m-2 < estimated glomerular filtration rate≤89 mL•min-1•1.73 m-2).

According to the endpoints including the composite of cardiac death, nonfatal recurrent myocardial infarction, and ischemia-driven revascularization assays, after one year of following up of 2 groups
*There were 16 cases of the primary endpoint in the control group and 6 cases of the primary endpoint in the treatment group with an absolute risk reduction ARR=0.046. elative risk RR= 0.38.

* There were 15 cases of secondary endpoint in the control group and 5 cases of secondary endpoint in the treatment with ARR= 0.041 and RR=0.34

In other words, the treatment of Chinese and Western medicines showed a strong effect in reducing the risk of the acute coronary syndrome in patients with renal deficiency.

However, The eGFR levels associated with the renal functioning in the treatment group were significantly higher, compared to the higher levels in the control group.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "Chinese herbal medicines plus western medicine standard therapy improved clinical outcomes in patients with ACS and mild-to-moderate renal insufficiency. Additionally, this study also demonstrated Chinese herbal medicines were useful in deferring the decline of renal function".

Taken altogether, herbal Angelica in combination with other herbal medicines that may be considered a remedy for the treatment of acute coronary syndrome, pending to larger sample size and multicenter human study.
