Cranberry Normalizes the Circulating C-Reactive Protein Against the Risk of CVD

By Kyle J. Norton

C-reactive protein (CRP) is a protein made by the liver. The CRP levels used in the blood test to the diagnosis of inflammation in the body, particularly in patients with an infectious disease.

Furthermore, in some cases, levels of CRP are also used to monitor the severity of disease in chronic conditions.

According to the article of Healthline in examing the levels of CRP in Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients, "  Normal CRP levels are below 3.0 mg/L., and  "A high-sensitivity CRP test can detect levels below 10.0 mg/L. This kind of test is performed primarily to determine risk for cardiovascular disease".

Infection can be acute or chronic. In the acute phase of infection, after receiving the messages from the central nervous system related to the danger of microbial infection, the immune macrophages in the first line of defense stimulate the production of blood palette to the cover the wound and pro-inflammatory cytokines to the site of the infection to kill off pathogens which try to invade the body.

In most cases in a healthy individual, the immune system can easily eradicate all foreign invaders and the wound is recovered within days and weeks.

Symptoms of the acute infection include gastrointestinal discomforts, such as congestion vomiting or nausea, and diarrhea, short term joint or muscle pain, fever, headache, skin rash and cough, Some patients with acute infection also experience symptoms of swollen lymph nodes, an indication of the body in fighting infection.

In chronic infection, the symptoms are most vague or no specific symptoms, including bronchitis and asthma, persistent low-grade chronic joint and muscle pain, or swelling and the alternations between diarrhea and constipation, bloating, or heartburn, In other words, the symptoms are totally depended on the location of the low-grade inflammation.

Most cases of infection except those of viral infection are treated by topical antibiotic cream and/or oral antibiotics.

Conventionally, patients with elevated levels of CRP are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVD).

Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belongings to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia. Because of its health benefits, cranberry has been cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of diseases associated with inflammation, researchers investigated the potential of low-calorie cranberry juice (LCCJ) on lowering the cardiometabolic risk.

A double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-arm study conducted with controlled diets, including 30 women and 26 men (mean baseline characteristics: 50 y; weight, 79 kg; body mass index, 28 kg/m(2)) completed an 8-wk intervention with LCCJ or a flavor/color/energy-matched placebo beverage.

Twice daily, volunteers consumed 240 mL of LCCJ or the placebo beverage, containing 173 or 62 mg of phenolic compounds and 6.5 or 7.5 g of total sugar per 240-mL serving, respectively.

According to the results of the study, serum C-reactive protein (CRP) was, lower for individuals consuming LCCJ than individuals consuming the placebo beverage.

More precisely, LCCJ expressed the transformed values of 0.522 ± 0.115 ln(mg/L) comapred to those of placebo of.0.997 ± 0.120 ln(mg/L).

Moreover, other parameters such as circulating TGs, insulin resistance, and diastolic BP
associated with the risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) were all reduced by the application of LCCJ.

Taken altogether, cranberry may be considered a remedy to lower CRP for reducing the risk of CVD, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Healthy Food Broccoli Inhibits Urologic Cancer Cells in Vitro

By Kyle J. Norton

Urologic cancers are a class of medical conditions including
*Prostate cancer is a condition in which the cells of the prostate have become cancerous, causing abnormal cell growth with the possibility of spreading to the distant parts of the body.

Most prostate cancers are slow-growing and enlarged prostate and prostate cancer may be detected during physical (rectum) exams.

* Kidney cancer is a medical condition characterized by irregular cell growth in the tissue of kidneys.

At the later stage, the cancerous cells may travel a distance way to infect other organs' tissues.
For example, if kidney cancer spreads to the lung is called kidney cancer with lung metastases.

* Bladder cancer
The bladder is a hollow elastic organ in the center of the lower abdomen that collects urine from the kidneys and excreted them through the urethra.

Bladder cancer is the most common type of cancer that affects men twice as frequently as it affects women.

* Cancer of the renal pelvis and ureter is cancer of renal pelvis on the top part of the ureter and the ureter which is a long tube that connects the kidney to the bladder

* Testicle cancer
Testicular Cancer is cancer that arises in the testicles (testes), located inside the scrotum. testicles form part of the male reproductive system, responding to the production and reproduction of male sex hormones and sperm.

* Cancer of the penis
Penis cancer is a type of irregular cell growth formed in the tissues of the penis.

* Urethra cancer
Urethral cancer is a type of medical condition caused by the growth of malignant cells in tissues of the urethra, the tube that carries urine from the bladder and out of the body.

The most common symptoms of urologic cancers are the difficulty starting to urinate or difficulty holding urine back, weak urine stream or interruption of stream, painful urination, pelvic discomfort, bone pain, erectile dysfunction (ED), painful ejaculation, blood in the urine and blood in the semen.

The joint study led by the National Cancer Center, Goyang, Korea, wrote,  "During 1999-2012 (In Korean), urological cancer occurred in 155,991 patients (Table 1). The most common cancer was prostate cancer (66,812 patients) followed by bladder cancer (41,549 patients), kidney cancer (36,836 patients), renal pelvis and ureter cancer (7,537 patients), testis cancer (2,439 patients), and penile cancer (818 patients)".

Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belongings to the family Brassicaceae. The veggie has large flower heads, usually green in color and the mass of flower heads surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant on the continent of Europe.

On finding a potential plant that processes anticarcinogenic activity, researchers examined the effects sulforaphane (SF), a natural compound sulforaphane (SFN) anti-urologic cancer effects.

According to the tested analysis, the application of SFN shows a remarkable anti-tumor effect in vitro and in vivo without exerting toxicity.

Furthermore, based on available evidence from epidemiological, in vitro, preclinical and early phase trials, SFN was not only available in standardized formulations,  bioavailable- both systemically and in the bladder but also exerted a significant anti bladder cancer through multiple mechanisms.

Additionally, similar to its effects on urological cancer, SFN induced cancer apoptosis without causing cytotoxicity.

Collectively, researchers said, "sulforaphane (SFN) represent a promising potential chemopreventative agent in bladder cancer".

Taken altogether, Broccoli processed abundant bioactive compound SFN, which may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of urologic tumors,  pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Phytochemical Tocopherols Inhibit Radiotherapy Side Effect of Osteoradionecrosis (ORN) in Head and Neck Cancer Patients

By Kyle J. Norton

Head and neck cancer is a group of cancers found in the mouth, throat, larynx, sinuses, or salivary glands.

Most cases of head and neck cancer, at the early stage, start by the cell growth irregularly and disorderly on the surface of the inner lining in the head and neck.

At the advanced stage, patients may experience symptoms of a lump in the nose, neck or throat, with or without pain, a persistent sore throat that does not heal, trouble swallowing (dysphagia) and frequent and persistent coughing.

At this stage, cancer cells may travel a distance away from the original site to infect other healthy tissue and organs.

The exact causes of head and neck cancer are unknown. However, certain prevalent risk factors such as prolonged sun exposure, infected by the Human papillomavirus (HPV) and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), poor oral and dental hygiene and occupational inhalants, long-term marijuana, and tobacco use and involuntary smoking are associated to the onset of head and neck cancer.

Dr. Kazuhiro Kobayashi in the investigation of the risk of HPV on head and neck cancer (HNC) wrote, " Infection with high-risk human papillomaviruses (HPVs) has recently been implicated in the pathogenesis of HNSCCs. It is now widely accepted that high-risk HPV is a cause of almost all cervical cancers as well as some forms of HNSCCs. HPV-related HNSCCs are increasing".

Osteoradionecrosis is a condition associated with bone death due to exposure to radiation or radiation treatment.

The death of bone cells is a result of radiation induce-damage of the blood vessel that supplies the nutrients to the bone.

Osteoradionecrosis is a rare side effect occurred sometime after radiation therapy has ended. The complication usually occurs in the lower jaw or mandible.

Tocopherols are phytochemicals of which many have vitamin E activity, belongings to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in butter, egg yolk, milk fat, some vegetable, and seed or nut oils, etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the prevention and treatment of cancer, researchers examined the effect of the modalities of the combination therapy of pentoxifylline and tocopherol in Vitamin E (PVe) against osteoradionecrosis (ORN) of the jaw induced by radiotherapy in head and neck cancer patients.

The study included a total of 110 patients in this retrospective study, which had radiotherapy for cancer of the head and neck with a total of 450 dental extractions after radiotherapy.

According to the tested results of patients had taken PVe for a mean of 12 (24) weeks preoperatively and 14 (18) weeks postoperatively, PVe treatment in external beam therapy was given in 92.72% of the patients, and 7.27% and 40% of the patients received intensity-modulated radiotherapy combination of chemotherapy and intensity-modulated radiotherapy, induced the development of ORN only in 2 patients.

These results compared to untreated patients was lower than that normally associated with dental extractions in irradiated patients.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "In patients undergoing dental extractions, after receiving radiotherapy of head and neck region, combination therapy of pentoxifylline and tocopherol are sufficiently effective".

Taken altogether, tocopherols use d in the combination of other medications may reduce the risk of radiotherapy side effects in the development of osteoradionecrosis (ORN) of the jaw in head and neck cancer patients. pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of tocopherols in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Cleaver(Galium aparine) Protects the Bone Density

By Kyle J. Norton

Bone health is measured by bone mineral density which has a direct influence on the risk of osteoporosis and fractures.

There are numbers of bone diseases, including include osteoporosis, rickets, osteomalacia, osteogenesis imperfecta, marble bone disease (osteopetrosis), Paget disease of bone, and fibrous dysplasia.

And osteoporosis is the most frequent occurrence in the aging population.

Osteoporosis is a bone disease characterized by the inability of the body to produce bone to make up bone loss, leading the loss of bone density over a long period of time.

People with low bone density are susceptible to fracture, break from a fall due to bone weakening.

The exact causes of osteoporosis are unknown. However, researchers do know that certain preventable risk factors such as smoking, low calcium intake, physical inactivity, excessive alcohol consumption and unpreventable risk factors such as aging, family history, genders, race, body frame size,... and sedentary works are associated to increase the onset of the disease.

It is a widespread degenerative disease of skeletal joints and often associated with senescence invertebrates due to excessive or abnormal mechanical loading of weight-bearing joints, arising from heavy long-term use or specific injuries.

If you experience symptoms of lower back pain, loss of height over time, a stooped posture, easy bone fracture, neck and back pain,..., you may have osteoporosis.

Truly, bone diseases affected normal growth and development can lead to weakness and/or deformity.

The causes of bone diseases may be associated with genetic abnormalities, nutritional deficiencies, hormonal disorders, infections, cancers..... and other conditions.

According to the general belief and the recommendation of health researchers, good diet and physical exercise may play an important role in skeletal mass at the end of adolescence and these bone mass remain as the conservation of it during adult life(1).

Attending normal exercise and intake of bone enhancing food at young adult life may protect ourselves against the risk of bone diseases as we age.

Cleaver is a herbaceous annual plant, genus Galium, belonging to the family Rubiaceae, native to North America and Eurasia. The herb has been used over thousands of years in herbal and traditional medicine as mild diuretic and blood and lymphatic cleanser and to treat psoriasis, skin conditions, glands, tonsillitis, bladder infections, prevent small kidney stone, etc.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of diseases associated with the loss of bone
density, researchers investigated hot component p-hydroxycinnamic acid (HCA) found abundantly in herbal cleaver effect on bone formation and an inhibitory effect on bone resorption in rat femoral tissues in vitro.

The study included diabetes rats induced bone loss by a single subcutaneous administration of STZ (6.0 mg/100 g body weight), following by orally administered HCA (0.25, 0.5, or 1.0 mg/100 g body weight) once daily for 14 days.

Before treatment with HCA, STZ administration showed a significant decrease in body weight and parameters associated with diabetes, including the increase in serum glucose, triglyceride, and calcium levels.

However, the alterations were significantly prevented by the administration of HCA (0.25, 0.5, or 1.0 mg/100 g).

Furthermore, bone density loss was also found in the STZ-diabetic rats observed by the significantly lower calcium content in the femoral-diaphyseal and -metaphyseal tissues which were also prevented after administration of HCA (0.25, 0.5, or 1.0 mg/100 g).

Moreover, the decline of the levels of Alkaline phosphatase activity associated with bone formation in the diaphyseal and metaphyseal tissues in STZ-diabetic rats was significantly prevented after the administration of HCA (0.5 and 1.0 mg/l00 g).

Additionally, administration of HCA (0.25, 0.5, or 1.0 mg/100 g) caused a significant increase in DNA content in the diaphyseal and metaphyseal tissues that were significantly decreased in STZ-diabetic rats.

Based on the findings, researchers said, " the intake of HCA has preventive effects on bone loss in STZ-diabetic rats, and that the intake has partially restorative effects on serum biochemical findings in the diabetic state".

Taken altogether, herbal cleaver processed a high amount of HCA  may be considered an anti bone loss remedy, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Comfrey(Symphytum officinale L.), a Natural Treatment for Unilateral Ankle Sprains

By Kyle J. Norton

Ankle sprains are the most common injury in the sport associated with overstretching of fibers or of the collagen of the ankle ligaments, causing the partial or complete disruption of the fibers.

In athletes with acute lateral ankle sprains, the balance ability in patients with acute lateral ankle sprain was significantly weaker. The weight-bearing on the nondominant limb was found to be significantly higher than on the dominant limb.

Treatment is totally depending on the severity of the condition, including
* Rest by avoiding activities that cause pain, swelling or discomfort.

* Ice treatment with an ice pack or ice slush bath immediately for 15 to 20 minutes and repeat every two to three to relieve pain and swelling.

* Compression is effective to stop swelling.

* Elevation

By keeping your foot elevated has been found to decrease pain and swelling.

And

* Medications
Over-the-counter pain relievers — such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB, others) or naproxen sodium (Aleve, others) or acetaminophen (Tylenol, others) have been used to manage the pain of a sprained ankle.

* Surgery
In some cases, surgery may be necessary if the repair a ligament that won't heal or won't heal properly, or the reconstruction of ligament tissues.

Comfrey is a perennial plant in the genus of Symphytum, belonging to the family Boraginaceae, native to Europe. It has been used in herbal and traditional medicine to ease excessive bleeding or on open wounds, relief pain and swollen, treat circulation issues, reduce cholesterol, etc.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of diseases associated with ankle pain, researchers compared the efficacy of comfrey extract to a commercial diclofenac (CAS 78213-16-8) preparation in the treatment of unilateral ankle sprains.

The observer-blind, randomized, multi-center clinical trial with two independent treatment groups "comfrey extract" and "diclofenac gel" (parallel-group design) included a total of 164 patients (82 in the comfrey group and 82 in the diclofenac group, intention-to-treat (ITT) analysis) was conducted by the Istituto Ortopedico Galeazzi.

According to the results of the tested assay, the area under the curve (AUC) of the difference of the tenderness values contra-lateral minus injured side, pain at rest and on movement, and swelling and ankle movement were significant improved in the comfrey group, compared to the diclofenac group.

Furthermore, on average of mean difference comfrey extract minus diclofenac, the AUC was +61.1 h x N/cm2 greater for patients treated with comfrey extract compared to diclofenac group (95% confidence interval: 19.08; 103.09 h x N/cm2).

The difference between the two treatment groups was statistically significant (analysis of variance with factors "study drug", "centre", and "drug x centre interaction") as the comfrey group showed a far better result in the treatment of unilateral ankle sprains.

There were no side effects during the treatment periods in both groups.

Based on the findings, researchers said, " The re-evaluation of the data showed the superiority of the plant-based ointment over the diclofenac gel in the treatment of distortions".

Taken altogether, Comfrey plant-based ointment combined with other herbal medicine may be considered a remedy for the treatment of unilateral ankle sprains, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids Process Antimicrobial Activities

By Kyle J. Norton

Antimicrobial activity is an action that kills microorganisms or stops their growth. In humans, these actions are carried out daily by the immune system.

Infection is a processive condition caused by the battle of the invasion of microorganisms and the host immune white blood cells. Microorganism during the battle might produce toxins which can lead to the initiation of infection-related transmissible disease or communicable disease.

In acute infections, the systematic immune system responds properly to the invasive pathogen, leading to a brief battle after which the immune system is always victorious.

However, chronic infections occur when the immune cannot kill off the invasive stimuli in the acute phase of infection, leading to chronic infectious diseases.

The most common diseases associated with microbial infection include
* Diseases caused by bacteria are totally dependent on the types of bacterias, such as pneumonia, caused by Streptococcus and Pseudomonas, and foodborne illnesses caused by bacteria such as Shigella, Campylobacter, and Salmonella.

* Diseases caused by the virus include smallpox. the common cold and different types of flu. measles, mumps, rubella, chickenpox, and shingles. hepatitis. herpes and cold sores. polio. rabies, Ebola and Hanta fever.

* Diseases caused by parasites are malaria, trichomoniasis, giardiasis, cryptosporidiosis, and toxoplasmosis.

* Diseases caused by fungi aspergillosis usually occurs in patients with lung diseases or weakened immune systems and Candidiasis is caused by the yeast Candida.

Omega-3 fatty acids are phytochemicals in the class of lipids, found abundantly in deepsea fisk, dark-green leafy vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, etc.

The three main components of Omega-3 fatty acids are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of infectious diseases, researchers examined the Omega 3 fatty acid antimicrobial activity.

Linolenic acid and its derivatives (eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid) found in the omega-3 fatty acids demonstrated a strong antimicrobial property against the infection in the brain, the eye, the cardiovascular system, and general human growth.

In transgenic zebrafish, increased production of EPA and DHA inhibited bacterial growth and enhanced production of anti-inflammatory cytokines, thereby protecting zebrafish from V. vulnificus infection.

Furthermore, omega-3 PUFAs also inhibited the virulence production of cytotoxins.

Moreover, EPA and DHA also induced the death of the Plasmodium species, inhibited viral replication, exerted anti-hepatitis C virus activity, and exhibited bactericidal and fungicidal effects.

Taken altogether, Omega-3 fatty acids may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of diseases involved in micro-infection, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Cruciferous vegetables Processed Anti- Blood Glucose Impairment Activity

By Kyle J. Norton

Diabetes is a chronic condition caused by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate the glucose.

In other words, diabetes occurs when cells in the pancreas dying off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol. In some cases, diabetes is also caused by allergic reactions of cells in the immune system.

Hyperglycemia, a medical condition of abnormally high blood glucose, is a major concern, in people with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

Most cases of hyperglycemia occurred in patients who do not manage their diabetes properly.

Untreated hyperglycemia has been found to induce ketoacidosis characterized by the symptoms shortness of breath, breath that smells fruity and gastrointestinal discomforts such as nausea, vomiting, and dry mouth.

The most common forms of diabetes are type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

In contrast to type II diabetes, types 1 diabetes are not associated with dietary intake or an unhealthy lifestyle that can cause an increase in glucose levels in the blood.

According to Diabetes Canada, patients with type 1 diabetes should aware of the number of insulin injections that are needed per day; the timing of insulin injections and the dose of insulin that is needed with each injection

Impaired fasting glucose and glucose tolerance are 2  types of prediabetes,

Cruciferous vegetables are a group of vegetables, belongings to the family Brassicaceae (also called Cruciferae) with many genera, species, and cultivated all over the world in suitable climate for commercial profits, including cauliflower, cabbage, kale, garden cress, bok choy, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and green leafy vegetables.

On finding a potential compound for the prevention and treatment of diabetes, researchers examined the chronic sulforaphane, a potent inducer of antioxidant enzymes present in cruciferous vegetables oral treatment in blood glucose impairment.

On obesity and insulin resistance induced by a highly palatable (HP) diet in male Wistar SFN showed much-lowering glucose tolerance, compared to the HP diet groups.

Furthermore, the group treated with SFN demonstrated a lower level of liver triacylglycerols but no differences in serum lipids, hepatic and kidney markers in both HP and SFN groups.

Moreover, SFN. also decreased the expression of GLUT3 associated with the uptake of glucose into the neuron in the cortex and hypothalamus in the HP diet group.

Collectively, researchers wrote, " SFN at the specific dose was able to accentuate glucose intolerance and may affect GLUT3 expression in the cerebral cortex and hypothalamus".

Taken altogether, cruciferous vegetables processed a high amount of SFN may be considered functional foods for the prevention of blood glucose impairment, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
